MINISTRY OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENT TO COOPERATE WITH EMIRATES DEVELOPMENT BANK IN FINANCING MODERN AGRICULTURAL VENTURES

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and Emirates Development Bank (EDB), the key financial engine of the UAE’s economic diversification and industrial transformation agenda, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a scheme to offer finance solutions to modern agricultural SMEs and start-ups in a bid to contribute to the UAE’s

sustainable economic development and food security – one of EDB’s five priority sectors that play a vital role in strengthening the economic resilience and competitiveness of the UAE.

The agreement was signed by His Excellency Eng Mohammed Mousa Alameeri, Assistant Undersecretary for the Food Diversity Sector at MOCCAE, and Mr Ahmed Mohamed Al Naqbi, CEO of EDB.

The MoU aligns with MOCCAE’s endeavors to scale up local agricultural production to increase the sector’s role in strengthening the country’s food security. It is also in line with EDB’s role under the umbrella of the comprehensive vision for the national economy

that seeks to position the country as a global hub for industry, advanced technology, and the industries of future, while guaranteeing its industrial, food, and technological security.

His Excellency Eng Alameeri said: “Improving local agricultural production through promoting the adoption of modern agriculture is a priority for MOCCAE in line with its strategy to enhance food security. The agreement with EDB falls within the Ministry’s efforts to join forces with strategic partners to explore opportunities that drive agricultural and fisheries production and launch appropriate financing schemes to

attract entrepreneurs.”

Under the agreement, the two parties will identify collaboration opportunities in food security and supporting SMEs and start-ups. EDB will offer financing solutions to modern agricultural businesses, while MOCCAE will host regular seminars and introductory courses on modern agricultural methods and technologies, highlighting their importance for food security and the sustainability of the sector.

ELECTRONIC MAGIC FLOWER DEPLOYED TO IMPROVE QUALITY AND REDUCE WASTE

In an industry estimated to be worth up to 9 billion US Dollars a year, where presentation is everything, offering the highest quality flowers possible and minimizing waste should be at the forefront of any operation. These are the challenges facing the global cut flower industry during all stages of processing and handling from the grower to the consumer.

To analyse where impacts and temperature fluctuations occur, both within international supply chains and home delivery networks, UK-based MM Flowers turned to a data logger typically used in the fresh produce industry. The data captured gives the team an opportunity to test understand exactly where problems occur and then develop mitigation methods and

remedial procedures to reduce waste and improve the quality of the flowers.

Developed by UK-based crop quality specialists Martin Lishman Ltd, ImpacTrack is a shock sensing data logger that sits inside dummy produce shapes designed to replicate the movement characteristics of fresh produce during handling and transport.

Using advanced 3D printing technology, Martin Lishman’s in-house design team can create virtually any shape of fresh produce that requires monitoring. “I discovered the ImpacTrack during my PhD where the device was placed into a 3D-printed electronic parsnip, which was used to identify destructive processes that cause damage to roots during post-harvest processing”, explains Technical & Quality Developer of MM Flowers, David Booth. “I could see its value for the cut flower market, so I worked with Martin Lishman to create what we have dubbed the Magic Flower”.

“Designed to be the same size and shape as a premium-quality rose and complete with interchangeable stem length, the Magic Flower is placed in a bouquet for shipping. Supply chain challenges can cause suboptimal transit conditions, so monitoring temperature and impacts during transit is key to identifying opportunities to improve the quality of our flowers”, adds David.

9,000 KM DRIVE: A CALL FOR MIDDLE EASTERN AGROTECH STARTUPS

Bruce Gurfein, a serial UAE entrepreneur has successfully completed the first in modern history 9,000 km road trip across six countries: the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, Palestine, and Israel. The trip promotes the launch of Future Gig, a UAEbased agrotech startup accelerator.

From Dubai to Jerusalem via Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Palestine, and Israel it took 38 hours of five days driving a Nissan Armada, covering more than 3,580 km with stops in major cities. During the 20-day journey, Bruce Gurfein and his trip partner Joe Koen have been meeting investors, land owners, business partners, and innovators in food technologies and desert agriculture to create a joint platform that would allow startups to share data, exchange experience, test products and gain market access, with a mission to ensure a shift towards sustainability in the region. The road back to the UAE was routed through Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain and was completed in six days.

The World Bank’s data shows that in 2020, the

Middle East region’s share of the world’s acute food insecurity was 20%, which is disproportionately high considering its 6% share of the population.

It is vital that the region’s wealthiest join forces to address this challenge. The global food and agriculture industry is valued at over $8 trillion and makes up for more than 10% of the global GDP. There are tremendous opportunities for innovation and technology in these industries – for example, in Israel alone, investments in foodtech have increased from $53 million in 2015 to $866 million in 2021, according to IVCMEITAR Israeli Tech Review 2021 Report.

“Expanding Investments in the region and leveraging the UAE as a neutral center can create a superpower that will provide food security and help build a better future for our families and planet. Peace is not just a word, and it doesn’t come with two signatures; it comes with a wholehearted embrace, via interpersonal relations being built. This is the Middle East after all; we don’t rush things here. Even our coffee takes time… that’s why it tastes so good”, –Bruce Gurfein concludes.

PRODUCING HYDROGEN PEROXIDE 'ON DEMAND' WITH THE HPGEN

Royal Brinkman, together with HPNow, is introducing the HPGen generator. With the HPGen™ generators, growers produce Peroxide UltraPure™ themselves on-site at the nursery. This ultra-pure form of hydrogen peroxide can be fed directly into the grower's irrigation system. This makes it easy to keep the irrigation system clean during cultivation and gives the crops a boost: hydrogen peroxide breaks down into pure water and oxygen, leading to more dissolved oxygen in the water.

Making your own hydrogen peroxide at the nursery; it is now possible with the HPGen

generator. It produces Peroxide UltraPure on the spot. Water, air and electricity are the only ingredients needed to generate hydrogen peroxide in safe concentrations, which can be used directly in the irrigation system. The hydrogen peroxide from the HPGen contains no heavy metals or other stabilizers and impurities. Peroxide UltraPure breaks down to pure water and oxygen, leaving no unwanted residual products.

Rob Beerling, technical specialist at Royal Brinkman: "Growers are constantly looking for ways to become more sustainable and autonomous, and the HPGen products fit perfectly into that puzzle. It is now possible to produce hydrogen peroxide directly with a fraction of the CO2 emissions compared to

INTERPOMA 2022: THE WORLD OF APPLES MEETS AGAIN IN BOLZANO, ITALY FROM NOVEMBER 17 TO 19

This year sees the 12° edition of Interpoma, and it will once again be a face-to-face event. The only international trade show for the entire apple industry is back in November at the Fiera Bolzano Exhibition Center (South Tyrol) in its regular two-yearly cycle. The main themes of Interpoma 2022 are digitalization and the sustainable use of resources in apple

production. Interpoma, the global reference point for apple growing, storage and marketing scheduled in Fiera Bolzano Exhibition Center (South Tyrol/Italy) from November 17 to 19, is looking ahead to the future this year with two highly topical themes: digitalization and the sustainable use of resources in the apple industry, the common threads running through the show’s entire events program, including Interpoma Congress and Interpoma Award.

Scheduled for November 17 and 18, the traditional international apple congress will focus on the industry’s innovations and

cutting-edge automated fruit-picking technology, with experts from all over the world contributing to the debate. The program will, as usual, include many new items of interest, including the Congress’ coordinator himself, Walter Guerra. He has been the Vice-Director of the Laimburg Research Center since 2021, and the Head of the Pomology Working Group from 2005 onwards. Tickets to Interpoma Congress can be purchased online, at a cost of 69,00 euros.

The most important world fair on apples would not be what it is without the Interpoma Award. The 2022 edition will focus on cuttingedge water-saving technologies in apple-growing. Two prizes will be awarded this year: one will go to companies or individuals, the other to start-ups.

ICL JOINS FORCES WITH PLANTARCBIO TO BOOST CROP YIELDS

ICL, a leading global specialty minerals company, and

ag-biotech company PlantArcBio, Ltd. announced the development of a novel bio-stimulant technology platform, which will improve crop yields while having minimal impact on the environment. The platform successfully uses of RNAi technology to maximize a plant's natural yield increase mechanisms, without any genetic modification, and was the result of a multi-year research collaboration between the two companies.

In early-stage canola field trials, the platform has significantly increased seed weight per hectare for canola crops, and ICL and PlantArcBio are planning larger-scale field trials in 2022. These will include testing the new technology platform using both commercial sprayers and

standard farming practices.

Greenhouse trials for soybeans and rice are already in progress, with early results showing good potential.

"The use of novel biostimulants based on RNAi technology helps promote sustainability, by reducing the use of chemicals in agriculture," explained Hadar Sutovsky, vice president of External Innovation and general manager of ICL Planet. "This aligns perfectly with ICL's long-term goal of creating impact and sustainable growth in the agriculture end-market, alongside ensuring food security." The global biostimulants market was estimated to be $3.2 billion in 2021 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.1% to reach $5.6 billion by 2026, according

UAE BEEF IMPORTERS PARTICIPATE IN A TRADE MISSION TO SPAIN ORGANIZED BY PROVACUNO

Provacuno (Provacuno, Madrid, Spain), a Spanish beef interprofessional association, organized a delegation of top UAE beef importers to visit several Spanish plants and farms as part of its Wonderful Beef 2.0 campaign as a trade mission. Participants learned about the safety and quality of EU/ Spanish beef, which follows a strict and safe European production model.

Five UAE Beef importers - namely Excellence Meats LLC, Hope Gourmet,

Parker Migliorini International Food Trading LLC, Sunlife General Trading LLC and Unique Seven Star General Trading LLC – participated in a 4-day trade mission which was conducted in Spain. On the first day, the group of UAE importers travelled to a renowned cattle farm, which stands out at the national level for being one of the largest producers of calves born and raised on its own farms through the development of homogeneous lines in breeds, sexes, conformations, and fat. The participants learned about Spanish Beef, which emphasized productive capacity and extensive control from the source to create a recognized quality meat. This farm also selects specimens with exceptional characteristics from the “Aquitaine Blonda cattle breed” and are given special care in the breeding process. On the second day, the UAE participants travelled to Buñol, Valencia and toured a massive 55,000

square meter Slaughterhouse facility in Buñol (Valencia). This facility has a slaughter line for up to 100 animals per hour, a cutting plant and veal with a capacity of 130 tons per day, a chamber of meat products to produce snacks, minced meat, and burgers. They also have a massive cool storage center of fresh and frozen beef products, at a capacity of forty thousand cubic meters.

The third day of the mission involved a trip to Barcelona, where the participants were treated to a tour of one of Spain’s most long-standing beef production organizations in Barcelona, with a history dating back over 100 years. The UAE vendors witnessed the superlative practice of extensive product traceability. The last day of the trip concluded at Mercamadrid, where the UAE team visited a state-of-the-art beef processing plant and headquarters in Mercamadrid.

MSC, PROVIDING SHIPPING & LOGISTICS SOLUTIONS FOR REFRIGERATED GOODS

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, a major player in the worldwide transportation of refrigerated cargoes, is shipping more and more containers of fruits, vegetables and other perishables every year. During the pandemic, the company grew and brought much needed capacity to the market, battling the complexities of supply chain disruption caused by the impact of COVID-19.

MSC has continued to add reefer containers and has sought to address reefer equipment imbalances globally. Meanwhie, port congestion and labour shortages have roiled global trade, meaning more ships and more equipment were needed to transport cargo around the world. By increasing its fleet to more than 700 ships and deploying cold treatment technologies MSC is wellpositioned to support the ongoing developments in international fruit and vegetable markets.

The long-term case for growth in the trade of refrigerated goods remains strong: the world’s population is growing and demand from the middle classes for healthy food continues to rise. One

estimate earlier this year, from Drewry Shipping Consultants, suggested that reefer container volumes may increase to 7 million FEUs (forty-foot-equivalent units) by 2025 from 5.7 million FEU in 2021. MSC’s dedicated reefer specialists – in excess of 1,000 trained people worldwide – have noticed particular demand for citrus products as the market grows.

The transportation of perishable goods in reefer containers has now reached 89% of the overall trade in perishables, meaning that only a little over 10% of such goods are carried on specialized reefer vessels, according to Drewry.

To support these market changes, 2021 saw the highest ever global production of reefer containers. MSC was able to increase the number of reefer containers carried to 2 million TEUs (twenty-foot-equivalent units). These boxes are equipped with the most advanced technology to maintain the quality and freshness of fruit and vegetables during transport.

Recent developments highlighting MSC’s continued commitment to investing in services and assets to support the reefer trade include the establishment in 2021 of the In-Transit Cargo

service that connects King Abdullah Port in Saudi Arabia with other GCC countries in just several days. This solution enables the swift movement of food and foodstuffs across the country, connecting with MSC’s intercontinental and regional sea shipping services that call at Saudi Arabia’s newest major commercial port.

MSC is present on more than 260 trade routes globally, calling at more than 520 ports, meaning that producers and shippers of agricultural products can expect to find solutions for any conceivable cargoes almost anywhere in the world with MSC.

On the other side of the Suez Canal, across the Mediterranean, construction of a new refrigerated warehouse in the ZAL of Valencia with capacity for 25,000 pallets will begin in the coming months and be available to MSC customers in 2024, bolstering the Spanish fruit and vegetable export sector.

MSC welcomes enquiries at its global network of 675 offices about these, and other developments, related to its leading reefer shipping solutions.

Soil moisture content is an important component in determining soil health and fertility. By maintaining a healthy soil moisture level, plants are more resilient to stressors, like drought, pest, and disease. Soil-borne plant diseases cause major economic losses globally, many parasitic, bacterial and fungal diseases can be mitigated with proper moisture management and no less, can be a straightforward method for reducing crop losses.

The impact of soil moisture on the red palm weevil

In a study by Aldryhim & Al-Bukiri (2003), there was a clear correlation between high soil moisture levels and the occurrence of Red Palm Weevil (RPW) proliferation in date palm orchards.

SOIL MOISTURE MANAGEMENT FOR PEST & DISEASE RESISTANCE IN HEALTHY SOILS

Soil moisture & plant stress

With increasing water scarcity, irrigated agriculture is often at the forefront of blame for inefficiency.

According to scientific research, more than 50% of water withdrawn from freshwater sources, never reaches the crops and is either lost from poor water management, or eventually seeps through the soil solution, polluting ground

water systems.

Soil health is critical in improving water use and crop production. Healthy soils have the capacity to absorb more water, promote plant growth, protect watersheds, and prevent water and air pollution from agro-chemicals, and organic waste. The positive impact of soil fertility is vast; promoting pest and pathogen suppression, and increased availability of nutrients for plant uptake.

In orchards with strict irrigation management infestation of the RPW was significantly less. Optimized irrigation not only improves the date palm growth and production but increases their resilience to RPW infestation.

Sensoterra partner, Smart Farm Sensing, implements subsurface irrigation, smart soil moisture sensing and insect traps monitoring for optimized management of date palm production. By integrating data into their AgrIoT platform, Smart Farm Sensing gives farmers insights into agricultural management requirement to optimize resource use, reduce inputs, and improve yields.

ANCIENT AGRICULTURE THRIVING IN MODERN TIMES

Figs, the first cultivated plants by humans Archaeologists have found subfossil figs, in the Jordan Valley, dating back to over 11,000 years ago. This finding strongly suggests that fig

trees were the first proof of agriculture and occurred at least 1000 years before traditional crops like wheat were planted.

The Fig Tree is strictly native to the Middle East and its popularity and health benefits saw it transplanted by the Greeks and the Romans throughout Europe and in the 15th century to the Americas. The first Olympians consumed the nutritious fruit and were also presented with figs as medals.

It isn’t surprising that Figs are mentioned in ancient texts and hold a position of symbolism in many world religions representing fertility, peace and prosperity. They have been a culinary delicacy throughout time. These versatile “fruits” are not actually a traditional fruit, but rather a syconium with hundreds of inverted flowers each bearing a single seed in each sac.

Fig Tree Production in Modern Times Today, producers world-wide see the fig tree as an alternative crop with a bright future. The experience of this visionary Chilean farmer Martin Wielandt, from Doble Valle, is a modern example of

it’s cultivation merits. In an interview for El Agro on Radio Agriculture on January 4, 2020, he explains how he started with a small fig orchard in 2012, and now has a 21-hectare plot and more than 6,500 trees planted.

“In general, it is a simple plantation, it does not require great care and the trees are quite robust. On the other hand, it presents some challenges during harvest, as it lasts for 10 weeks, since the fruit matures in layers. This is a fundamental difference compared to other fruits. There are 670 plants per hectare and more specifically actual “flowering” trees, there are

fewer plants, approximately 500. A good harvest is between 8,000 and 10,000 kilos per hectare¨.

Less water consumption and greater production

The new climate scenario has caused agricultural producers to consider fruit trees that are more resistant to heat, and that have less water consumption. In this context, the fig is a fruit that does not require great amounts of water compared to other similar crops, in addition, its production level is usually very high, obtaining better results per square meter of planting than with other types

of crops. Planting in EasyFill™ grow bags optimises water savings and provides for targeted fertilisation and transferring of plants.

Phytosanitary care is minor, another characteristic that makes this fruit a great option for today’s growers.

Higher Profitability

According to an article published by the Spanish company Innovagri at the end of 2019 in which it contextualizes the economic advantages of the fig with respect to other crops entitled "Super-intensive dry fig production system, a profitable alternative", various points are listed that explain

the reason for the profitability of the fig in today’s market.

Once the investment costs are covered, the production manages to reach very good profitability, generating an amortisation in the cost of the investment, in addition to a considerable reduction in the labour necessary for handling and harvesting.

If you are a grower and want to start your own production of fig trees, Wangara

Horticultural Supplies can advise you and help you get started with your first Production Test.

AL

CHANGING THE FODDER SOLUTIONS SPECTRUM FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVESTOCK FARMING

The UAE has proven to be a visionary nation time and again. The past 50 years stand testimony to our changing skyline and incredible history. We have raced towards innovation while firmly holding on to our traditions and values. And we have achieved this because our rulers put our people at the core of every initiative.

Al Aliyo Hydrofarms was born of one such thought process.

Hydroponic is a culmination of two Greek words, 'hydro,' meaning water, and 'ponos,' meaning labor. It means growing plants in water rather than inert soil. This green concept dates to the Babylonian era and has revived global interest due to an acute shortage of quality fodder production.

Tarannum Malik, Chairperson and Managing Director of Al Aliyo Hydrofarms, started the company to offer a long-term solution to the much-neglected challenges of the agro-industry in the UAE. They have a growth and harvest capacity of 15,000kgs per day of fresh grass for animal feed.

"Our vision is in sync with the UAE national agenda to

strengthen significant food supply chains across all strata of society on top priority. We reside in a desert with sub-tropical arid summers and warm winters, where the flora is sparse. Hence, we aim to contribute to the UAE government's food security

efforts by providing top-notch green fodder directly to farmers", says Tarannum Malik.

Hydroponic farming has been gaining steam as it eliminates the dependency on climatic conditions, seasons, and soil. Plant production occurs in a monitored sterile environment sans human interference. Hence, the product tends to grow faster, uses less water, and is chemical and pesticidefree. Furthermore, hydroponic grass is easier to harvest and has higher nutritional value.

Hydroponic fresh fodder invariably results in healthier livestock. Animals have better

gastrointestinal health, and there are lesser chances of ulcers, colic, acidosis, and laminitis. Moreover, feeding fresh grass results in healthier weight gain and better hydration. There is improved milk yield and fat composition.

Despite growing premium produce, Al Aliyo’s hydroponic fodder is economical and affordable vis-à-vis the dry grass and feed currently available in the market.

"Our mission is to employ best practices for sector expansion enabling the UAE to become self-sufficient in livestock fodder requirements. Our objective is to

identify and redefine the wasteful farming methodologies and replace them with viable, sustainable solutions for longterm benefit, adds Tarannum Malik.

She further explains, "Our revolutionary hydroponic methods are cost-effective and environmentally friendly and harness temperature control and other best industry practices. We are committed to workplace safety and well-being and use no harmful materials or chemicals in production".

Tarannum further states, "We know feeding your animals is time-consuming, and hence we

deliver convenience in a crate to your doorstep. Our fodder requires no mixing, chopping, cutting, or other manual processes before feeding. According to your order specifications, it comes in the form of ready-to-feed grass biscuits".

Al Aliyo cuts through the noise in the hydroponic industry for the following reasons:

• They use no chemical fertilizers or pesticides in the growth process. Additionally, the grass is grown under strictly monitored hygiene and sanitary protocol.

• They consume up to 90% lesser water than conventional farming. Additionally, they use atmospheric condensers and save up to 2000 liters of water daily.

• They control their facility temperatures with state-of-the-art, green HVAC systems.

• They use no soil.

• They grow in 3500 sqft within one week what a hectare of land yields annually.

• Their seeds undergo a thorough cleansing process to eliminate dust, mud, and other contaminants, thus reducing the possibility of colic and other gastrointestinal illnesses.

• They pride themselves on providing safe and healthy fodder compared to the commercially available dry fodder options in the market.

Al Aliyo Hydrofarms has reimagined innovation to combat climate change and is on the cusp of a green revolution. Helmed by a strong woman, they are changing the fodder solutions spectrum for sustainable livestock farming, one feed at a time.

PRECISEAG IS USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO BRING ABOUT A POULTRY BIOSECURITY REVOLUTION

Traditional poultry health assessment

If your poultry farm has experienced a devastating disease outbreak, then you know just how important biosecurity is. In fact, it should be the top priority for any poultry farmer, big or small.

Current prevalent methods of poultry health assessment worldwide rely on observations from farmers, farmworkers, and veterinarians. Frequently laboratory analyses are required as a follow-on. However, all this process takes time, frequently days, and by the time a diagnosis is complete, the disease has spread.

Additionally, human perception is overwhelmingly

susceptible to error. This has been evident over the years, with most of the disease outbreaks being attributed to the missteps or miscalculations of individuals or groups. Human error is always a possibility, no matter how welltrained or experienced the staff may be. So what is the solution?

The technology advantage

In search of an answer to this persistent problem, the industry has turned to artificial intelligence to assist the people on the front lines of the global food supply. A new AI-powered solution, PreciseAG.ai uses critical imagery data collected by cameras to detect anomalies in the health of poultry stock. The

results are instantly delivered to the right people in realtime, allowing for quick and decisive action to be taken before disease has a chance to spread.

With solutions like PreciseAG.ai at the forefront of this new revolution, the future of poultry farming looks brighter than ever before. Commercial producers, animal health professionals, and even government agencies can deploy PreciseAG.ai’s solution anywhere, regardless of the size of the farm. This is a huge step forward in the fight against poultry diseases.

With early intervention, expensive measures like quarantining chickens and halting the movement of poultry products can be avoided. In the long run, this will lead to considerable savings for the industry at large.

The best part…there is no change to daily operations during initial flock checks, no equipment to install or maintain, and no extra work for the farm management or staff.

EIMA INTERNATIONAL: THE "FOCUS" THEMES OF THE EVENT

As the event draws nearer, the calendar of events and in-depth themed discussions taking place at the Bologna exhibition centre, Italy over the five days from 9 to 13 November is taking shape. The 45 th edition of EIMA promises to be very rich in content: in addition to workshops, conventions and seminars on technical topics, the event features major political issues and scenario analyses.

The organisational machine of EIMA International, the world exhibition of agricultural machinery that will hold its 45th edition in Bologna from 9 to 13 November, is in full swing. In these very days the offices of FederUnacoma, the association of agricultural machinery manufacturers that is the direct organiser of the event, are finetuning the full calendar of themed events that have always punctuated the five days of the exhibition. While it is still being worked out, the programme already appears to be rich in content, including press conferences, conventions, exhibitions in the demo area, seminars and workshops. In the foreground, political and economic issues relating to the development of the agromechanical sector, which are the focus of the press conference presenting the

event, scheduled for Tuesday 8 November. The meeting is an opportunity to take stock of developments in the world market for agricultural machinery, with an analysis of possible short and medium-term trends. Political and economic scenarios will be discussed again on Wednesday 9 November, with geopolitical analyst Dario Fabbri opening a window on the military conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and the consequences for the agricultural sector and the agromechanical industry. Moreover, the next edition of EIMA is an important moment of debate with politicians and representatives of institutionsdelegations of European and Italian parliamentarians will be present in Bologna - called upon to define strategies for the sector, which has to deal with structural and long-term crises, such as those linked to global

warming and drought. Together with technological innovation, the climate emergency is one of the strong themes of the Bologna event. Various meetings have already been scheduled on this subject, from the workshop on "Climate change: risk management", promoted by FederUnacoma and Agia/CIA (Wednesday 9 November), to the seminar entitled "Sustainable use of waterEUWAY Project" organised again by AGIA/CIA (Thursday 10 November), and the conference on "The challenge of water. Accessible technologies for developing countries" organised by FederUnacoma/CEFA. The digitalisation of mechanical vehicles, the spread of precision agriculture, the new frontiers of automation and artificial intelligence are fundamental for the sustainability of the primary sector, and it is precisely these technologies that are at the centre of the meeting scheduled for Friday 11 November by the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF), while the meeting organised by the Agricultural Robotics Association (FIRA) on Thursday 10 November looks in particular at systems for highly automated agriculture. Agriculture 4.0 will also be discussed at the meeting of the Smart Agrifood Observatory which, also on Thursday 10 November, will take stock of the spread of digital technology in the agricultural and agrifood supply chain.

SPACE 2022: A FOCUS ON CLIMATE AND YOUTH

SPACE took place from 13 to 15 September in a very warm and positive atmosphere, marking its 35 th anniversary. Attendance was very high over the three days of this 36 th edition at the Rennes Exhibition Centre. The full scope of the livestock industry was represented, from cattle, pigs, goats and

sheep to poultry, rabbits and aquaculture, in a very positive and constructive ambience.

SPACE 2022 was extremely successful, with over 90,000 visitors (90,108, of whom 8,406 came from 120 different countries), and close to 1,200 exhibitors (of which 300 were international businesses and 250 were

taking part in SPACE for the first time).

The event recovered its full international dimension after two years during which travel by visitors from abroad was heavily restricted. Delegations from around the world came to meet exhibitors, visit farms and draw inspiration from our organisational models. Many contacts were established with delegations from West Africa (Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Benin, etc.), Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Morocco, Algeria, Vietnam, the Philippines and numerous European countries. Talks organised for the first time in partnership with Promosalons led to important business exchanges with top buyers from Colombia, Chile, India, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Morocco and Nigeria.

In a context marked by drought and the soaring price of energy and raw

materials, climate was the annual theme developed by the Espace for the Future. Through the numerous debates, conferences, products and equipment presented by exhibitors, SPACE 2022 provided an opportunity to show that agricultural stakeholders are already taking measures aimed at reducing the impact of livestock farming on the climate. The livestock industry provides solutions to face climate challenges, and SPACE was able to demonstrate this.

Innovations in the sector, rewarded with the Innov’Space label (36 winners this year), also highlighted the continuous progress achieved by the world of agriculture. The winners offered visitors new solutions for animal welfare, protecting the environment, health and safety and improving farmers’ working conditions.

One of the biggest new features of this year’s event was the first Youth Forum, a space for young people organised in collaboration with agricultural teaching networks and opened by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Marc Fesneau, at the start of the Expo. This new space enabled young people to voice their visions for their future jobs. They could also

express their motivations and questions to Loïg Chesnais-Girard, President of the Brittany Region, who paid very close attention to their points of view.

SPACE is also unique for its capacity to host around 100 conferences each year, allowing all stakeholders in the agricultural sector to learn about and discuss

topical issues such as new technologies, solutions for reducing climate impact, establishing and selling farms, protein selfsufficiency, research into new fodder crops, CAP issues, etc.

Livestock presentations, with 550 cattle of 13 breeds and 150 sheep and goats of 11 breeds, provided a magnificent showcase for genetics and the breeders’ know-how. A special focus was placed on the Jersey dairy breed with more than 60 cattle on show and in competition. The European Jersey forum was held during the event and the World Jersey Cattle Bureau had the opportunity to discover SPACE’s unique position for livestock

breeders. The Blonde d’Aquitaine was the beef breed under the spotlight, with a national challenge that proved highly popular with 80 cattle on show. The champion of the Normande breed competition was voted supreme champion of SPACE 2022. This dimension as a genetic showcase and the high-level competitions and presentations are also what makes the Expo a driver for progress for livestock farmers.

For its anniversary, SPACE 2022 was the epitome of a professional, international and convivial trade show. Despite a difficult context, these three days have proved that with abundant and constructive dialogue, high attendance by visitors and

exhibitors and the expo’s very positive dynamic, 35 years after its first edition SPACE is an exceptional showcase for the livestock industry. A modern, constantly-evolving industry with a bright future and a resolve to feed society and meet its requirements. This positive energy and optimism inspire confidence in our farmers’ determination to carry out their jobs with conviction and to ensure our food sovereignty, while remaining in tune with their fellow citizens.

We look forward to seeing you from Tuesday 12 to Thursday 14 September 2023 for the next edition of SPACE at the Rennes Exhibition Centre!
