This porject rigorously investigates alternate methods of using 3D LINE networks to develop formal systems that are structural, spatial, organizational and capable of variation. Students will use these models as the point of departure for the development of a proposal for a lifeguard station on Venice Beach, including the development of a coherent system for the connections between your linear elements. 2 0 2 A PR O JE C T 2

This project was a very system based project. We were assigned this to create a structure that would be located in ZZYZZ desert and would incorporate many levels of water. I was fascinated by the ground that was located in and around ZZYZZ. When water pro-trueded the ground or someone stepped on it, it completely dismantles. From that pressure point, each rock affected another, creating a sort of gradient. My cracking system connects the codies of water that were associated with the program. The cracks and surfaces have greater surface area towards the bodies of water and less surface area in the middle, awar from the bodies of water. The cracks were used to create system and program and connect the bodies of water.

HI G H

HIGH PERFORMANCE IS A HIGH EFFICIENT AND LARGE TRAINING FACILITY THAT IS USED FOR ATHLETES THAT AIM TO BECOME BETTER ARCHITECTURE. CURVED SURFACES AND BAULTED STRUCTURE CREATES A DYNAMIC FEEL THAT MAKES THE ATHLETE FEEL THE HIGH EFFITHROUGH THE ENTIRE BUILDING AND MAKES THE STRUCTURE MORE TRANSPARENT, CONNECTING THE PERSON FROM THE INSIDE TO THE THE REHAB SECTION HAS TWO GLASS WALLS INTENDED FOR TRAINERS AND SCOUTS TO VIEW THE ATHLETES IN THE FIELD AND IN THE POOL THE LAP POOL AND TO PROVIDE A CONSTANT WATER SOURCE FOR THE GRASS FIELD AND 2) TO MAKE THE ATHLETE FEEL LIKE THEY ARE A MORE CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT. OVERALL THE STRUCTURE IS VERY OPEN AND HAS VERY SMALL AMOUNT OF WALLS IN ORDER TO


PERFORMANCE

CONDITIONALLY AND PHYSICALLY. THE MASSIVE HEIGHT AND LARGE SPACES WERE INSPIRED BY THE GRAND SPACES CONSTANTLY USED IN GOTHIC CIENCY AND URGENCY TO USE WIDE SPACES. THE CONSTANT USE OF GLASS THROUGHOUT THE STRUCTURE ALLOWS NATURAL LIGHT TO CIRCULATE OUTSIDE. THIS ALLOWS THE TO FEEL LIKE THEY ARE WORKING OUT OUTSIDE, BUT STILL HAE THE INSIDE COMFORT. THE BRIDGE CONNECTING TO FROM THE INSIDE. THE POOL AND FIELD ARE LOCATED ABOVE THE RIVER TO 1) FILTER WATER THROUGH THE STRUCTURE AND PROVIDE WATER FOR SWIMMING IN THE RIVER OR RUNNING ON THE RIVER. THE INDOOR TRACK GIVES A DIFFERENT TYPE OF EXPERIENCE FOR THE RUNNER AND CREATES CREATE A GRAND WORKOUT FACILITY THAT CONNECTS ALL AREAS AND ALLOWS THE ATHLETE TO GO TO ANY- SPACE AT ANYTIME. 2014 FALL

PROJECT 1B WAS A CONTINUATION OF PROJECT 1A. WE WERE TO TAKE OUR PRECEDENT MATERIAL, STEEL, AND TURN IT INTO A 10’ BY 15’ PAVILLION THAT WOULD BE LOCATED AT USC SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE. WE TOOK THE MATERIAL AND MADE IT STRUCTURAL , SUCH AS THE CONCRETE IN THE FOLK ART MUSEUM. WE MADE RECTANGULAR BOXES AND LAYED THEM ON A GRID ACROSS THE WHOLE PAVILLION. FROM THERE WE TOOK A CRUVED SURFACE AND CARVED OUT THE SHAPE INSIDE THESE SQUARES. THIS CREATED A UNIQUE LOOK THAT GAVE THE VISITOR A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE TO EVERY ANGLE. ALSO, HOW THE MUSEUM WAS BASED ON A CONSTANT CIRCULATION, WE MADE THE ENTIRE PAVILLION ACCESSABLE AT ALL POINTS. IN ADDITION, THE PANELS ON THE PAVILION WERE DERIVED FROM THE STEEL FACADE ON THE MUSEUM. THE PATRON WOULD BE ABLE TO FEEL THE MATERIAL, CONTINUING THE “TRUTH TO MATERAIL” CHARACTERISTIC OF THE MUSEUM. PARTNER PROJECT | CREDIT: Y. NISHI

OUR FINAL PROJECT WAS A GROUP STUDIO PROJECT. OUR TWO LEAD DESIGNERS CREATED A PAVILION THAT WAS VERY AWARE OF THE SPACE AND SHADOW IT CREATED. THE HEXAGON DESIGN FLOODS THE ENTIRE CAPSULE AT DIFFERENT SCALES TO CREATE VARIOUS EXPERIENCES. THE SCALES THAT COME OUT OF THE STRUCTURE ARE SITUATED IN AND OUT, CREATING DIFFERENT VENUES FOR LIGHT TO COME IN. AS A STUDIO, WE ASSEMBLED EACH PANEL AND PUT IT ALL TOGETHER WITHIN A WEEK. THIS PROJECT WAS A FIVE UNIT APARTMENT BUILDING THAT WAS TO BE LOCATED AT 5815 PIEDMONT STREET IN HIGHLAND PARK,CALIFORNIA. THIS APARTMENT COMPLEX INCLUDED TWO ONE-BEDROOM UNITS, ONE TWO-BEDROOM UNIT, AND ONE 3-BEDROOM UNIT. MY PROJECT EXPLORED THE USE OF SKIN AND FUNTION. THE PLANS WERE SET UP SO THAT THE ROOMS FACING THE COURTYARD WERE ALL PUBLIC SPACES, SUCH AS DINING ROOMS AND LIVING ROOMS; ALL THE EXTERIOR ROOMS WERE BEDROOMS AND BATHROOMS AND COVERED WITH A STRIPPED FACADE THAT PROVIDED SHADING AND TEXTURE. 2014 FALL

SLANTED THE CENTER FOR ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN DESIGN LOS ANGELES, BETTER KNOWN AS CALA, IS A CENTER FOR NOT ONLY ARCHITECTURE, BUT A CENTER FOR EDUCATION, INSPIRATION AND CONNECTION. THE DESIGN FUNCTION IS BASED ON THE CONCEPT OF FOLDING PLANES. THE TWO EXTERIOR FOLDS ENCLOSE THE ENTIRE BUILDING, FRAMING THE GALLERY SPACES. HOWEVER THOSE MAJOR FOLDS BEND INSIDE CREATING INTERIOR SPACES. PROGRAMATIC SPACES ARE THEN INSERTED, CREATING A STRUCTUREOF ENCLOSED SPACES. THE TWO MAJOR EXTERIOR FOLDS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH A LARGE DOUBLE CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM THAT ENCLOSES THE BUILDING. THE GLASS ALLOWS DAYLIGHT AND VENITILATION THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE BUILDING. THE LARGE GLASS CURTAIN WALL FACING BROADWAY, ALLOWS DAYLIGHT TO LIGHT UP THE ENTIRE STAIRCASE THAT IS LOCATED ON THE NORTHWEST SIDE OF THE BUILDING. THIS MAKES THE PATRON WANT TO CIRCULATE UP THROUGH THE BUILDING, FOLLOWING THE LIGHT. THE PROGRAM IS DSITRUBTED ACCORDING TO FUNCTION AND DAYLIGHT. GALLERY SPACES ARE SITUATED ON THE LOWER LEVELS, WHERE LEAST AMOUNT OF DAYLIGHT WILL EFFECT IT. OFFICES, CLASSROOMS, AND COLLABORATIVE AREAS ARE TOWARDS THE TOP, GIVING THE PERSON A VIEW OF THE CITY AND DAYLIGHT. STUDIES SHOW ONE IS MORE PRODUCTIVE WHEN SURROUNDED BY DAYLIGHT AND AN EXTERNAL VIEW. THE DRAMATIC VIEW FROM THE SIDEWALK MAKES THE BUILDING LOOKS NOT ONLY INVITING, BUT IT ENTICES THE PATRON TO COME SEE WHAT LIES IN THE INTERIOR FOLDS. THE FORM CONNECTS THE PERSON TO THE SPACE AND TO THE PROGRAM. THE SLANTED FOLDS CREATE A DESIGN THAT NOT ONLY CAPTURES THE CONCEPTS OF EDUCATION AND DESIGN AT CALA, BUT ENCOURAGES COLLABORATION AND EXPERIENCE.
