INTRODUCTION FROM HEADMASTER At Malvern College Egypt, our goal is not only aiming for high standards of pupil attainment but at developing a love for education that will stimulate a spirit of lifelong learning. Beyond the traditional classroom curriculum, we aim to provide our pupils with a wide range of opportunities to explore their talents and nurture areas in which they feel they can improve. At times, this may require emotional, social or other elements of support to help them appreciate that they can progress in any area they wish. This whole child, holistic, approach is obvious in our Early Years classes with many activities all happening simultaneously. However, it is being implemented across the whole College. Our curriculum is not only built on the strengths of the English National Curriculum but also on the Malvern Qualities that are a vital part of a Malvern education at all the Malvern College campuses around the world. From participating in sports days to undertaking environmental trips to Cyprus our pupils are encouraged and supported in their endeavours to grow as positive learners beyond individual subject areas. To achieve this ethos of lifelong learning goes well beyond the pupils and starts with our teachers. Over the course of the year we have had teachers continuing their own learning journey, from the Early Years teachers undertaking Read, Write Inc training to Secondary School teachers participating in training workshops in preparation for delivering the IB Diploma Programme. The understanding that we all have more to learn and none of us know everything, is a powerful tool in helping our pupils to engage with the curriculum and challenge themselves to be the best that they can be. This understanding does not require our pupils to compare themselves to others through assessment results, but simply reflect on their own achievements and be honest about their efforts. Our parents and wider community have also played an important part in learning at MCE. From the inspirational International Day to the Christmas Bazaar our Friends of MCE Committee have worked hard to continue in their mission to provide for, and raise awareness of, charity. In collaboration with our pupil House system we have continued to support local and national charities from pupils painting murals to donating food boxes during Ramadan. This yearbook is a celebration of everything that the pupils have achieved over the course of the last year. Not only in their wonderful progress through a single subject, but in participation of such a varied range of activities. Some pupils have shocked themselves by being able to stand on stage and perform in front of their peers at the Malvern’s Got Talent contest, while others have relished the chance to spend some quieter time in the library exploring a new genre of books following an inspirational talk by a best-selling author. In the very short MCE history I truly believe we have travelled a great distance together in our shared learning journey and I look forward to seeing what can be achieved next year. EARLY YEARS

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF EARLY YEARS As my second year at Malvern College Egypt draws to a close, it offers the opportunity to reflect upon this year and the highlights. For me, our children and families continue to be the shining lights of the College. To observe the children growing, developing and learning has been completely gratifying. Our Read, Write Inc (RWInc) Phonics programme has continued to enable all of our children to begin the very tricky task of learning all of their letter sounds and being able to apply these skills to blend to read and to use their letter formation knowledge to write. I am overwhelmed by the progress your children have made both within Nursery and Reception. Watching each and every child sing on stage during our Winter Concert was extremely special, a very warm and tingly moment for me as each year group took their turn. The children all looked amazing in their costumes and demonstrated such confidence and resilience in their performances. Last year’s Pre-Nursery children have enjoyed an amazing year within Nursery with the talented teaching team constantly supporting and stretching them. Every time I pop into one of their classrooms, the children greet me warmly and there are always a variety of exciting and interesting learning opportunities taking place. The Nursery children benefitted from a trip to the Sitara Theatre to go “On a Bear Hunt”, and visited Kidzania. Last year’s Nursery children have spent their first year in Reception learning to read and write alongside developing their numeracy skills amongst a whole range of other social and academic learning. All of the Reception children have taken part in their first class assembly within the College theatre, demonstrating their growing confidence to deliver their lines and to perform in front of an audience. The Reception children enjoyed trips to the Sitara Theatre and to The Family Park, and benefitted from the continual dedication of the Reception teaching team. Our youngest children in Pre-Nursery have grown and developed into polite, considerate and skilled individuals who are completely ready for their transition into Nursery in September. They have enjoyed a variety of rich and wonderful learning opportunities each and every day. Highlights have been their mini-sports day and sea-side fun days within the College offering opportunities to have fun and develop their skills. All in all we have experienced another extremely positive year within Early Years at Malvern College Egypt, and with a full cohort of 5 classes in both Nursery and Reception next year, we look forward to developing our learning journey and welcoming many new children to our Early Years family at MCE. We have experimented with mixing colours, manipulated play dough, had fun with sand and water games, dressed up, role played and we have done loads of singing and dancing. But best of all we have learnt how to play nicely and have gentle hands, share and take turns, all of this while making lots of good friends along the way. PRIMARY

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF PRIMARY This year has seen a growth in numbers in the Primary School as our reputation spreads throughout Cairo. It has been a period of consolidation with tweaks made to improve what was a successful first year. Our high expectations for behaviour and academic achievement have become the norm and it gives me great pleasure when visitors comment on the appearance and behaviour of the students, whether it is in school or the students are on a trip. The pupils have made pleasing progress over the year in all areas of the Primary School. The importance of the excellent work done in the Early Years, particularly with Read Write Inc, lays the solid foundations for the children to flourish as they move up through the College. The end of year assessments demonstrated the excellent progress that is being made throughout the School. Most of the pupils scored very highly in these tests which is fantastic. However, it is equally important for the pupils to learn from their mistakes, if things did not go so well. The obvious errors the pupils make tend to be the old favourites. Did they read the question properly? Did they understand exactly is being asked for in the question? Did they look at the mark scheme and finally did they check their work through? At MCE it is important that pupils learn from making mistakes, whether they are academic or social mistakes. Our job as teachers is to prepare them for the Secondary School and so it is fine for pupils to make mistakes in the Primary School, and learn from them, and not to repeat them. The problem with assessments is that they are most often knowledge based and there are no tests for the character that the student possesses. There are no tests for the “Malvern Qualities of kindness, humility, open mindedness, ambition, curiosity, independence, selfawareness, loyalty, resilience, charity, good manners, gratefulness, empathy, a sense of fun and humour, honesty, teamwork, collaboration, optimism, fairness and grit. These qualities are the ones that determine who you are and these will be the true tests as you go through life. These life tests, it could be argued, are more important than academic assessments. At MCE we recognise the importance of passing tests and making great academic progress but at the same time a lot of time is put into developing the whole child and instilling these other vital qualities into the pupils. It has been another busy year and this yearbook celebrates all that we have achieved. It consolidates so many wonderful memories for us all and demonstrates what a busy and happy school MCE is. We will continue to grow stronger in the coming years. We have outstanding staff, pupils who are great ambassadors for the school and supportive parents. I am sure that we will succeed in our aim to be the best school in Cairo and beyond. Johnnie Kittermaster Head of Primary 37

Having started the year with 22 students and finishing with 13, they have had to adapt to lots of changes. They have all made lots of personal and academic progress and focused on improving their skills, knowledge and understanding in a wide variety of areas. The most pleasing things about 2M are their unwavering team spirit, their willingness to try new experiences throughout the year and their fantastic enthusiasm for their learning!

Our time with 3A this academic year has been a wonderful adventure. They have been hardworking and passionate throughout the three terms. There have been many highlights this year, including our trip to Wadi Degla to learn about the rocks and soil as part of our Science topic, and a trip to the Pharaonic Village to learn about life in Ancient Egypt. Other highlights include our two class assemblies, the first about the environment and the second about Ancient Rome, where the children performed army formations using shields they had made and sang the song ‘Hey Romans!’ It has been wonderful to see how far our class has progressed this year, especially in their core subject areas of English and Mathematics and we would like to congratulate them on this achievement. Thank you to all those who have been a part of 3A this year and the best of luck to the students heading onwards to Year 4.

This year in our journey in 4M the children really enjoyed all the adventurous work done in English, like Robin Hood’s story, playscript writing and all the drama that came with it. They loved imagining being a prince or a princess as they designed their castle projects. We had plenty of “chocolatey” fun at Ganache, but Scrabble, Lego Day, and International Day were their three favourite events this year. The children got to be electricians as they connected a circuit and got to make their own switches, and enjoyed exploring the wild habits of different animals. Our Viking adventure has also unfortunately come to an end. As the summer begins I wish them all the best in Year 5.

We have experienced many great adventures and we have grown so much in so many different ways. We had lots of exciting trips. These included Wellspring (which was awesome) and the Remembrance Service that was very emotional. At Wellspring we all learned that we can depend on ourselves and that we can do anything if we always believe in ourselves and persevere. We also participated in football and swimming inter-house competitions. We are now ready to experience more new adventures in Year 6.

I can sum up Form 5A through a quote by Gilbert K. Chesterton who wrote… I owe my success to having listened respectfully to the very best advice, and then going away and doing the exact opposite. This, I could argue, is pretty much true for each and every student in 5A. Consequentially, there has been stress, headaches and more hair loss… but who cares? Overall, you have had a very successful year both academically and socially. As a class we have laughed and some of us have cried, but nonetheless our determination, enthusiasm and curiosity has remained throughout. Teaching and learning has been fun, which has had a positive effect on your motivation levels, determining what you learn and how much you have retained - and you have retained a lot! I am incredibly proud of each and every one of you for your perseverance and courage. Remember “education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today” (Malcolm X).

6L have worked hard throughout the year to step out of the shadows and become more proactive students who care for one another. Our goal from the beginning was to be shining stars and act as role models for other members of Primary School (as well as on stage!). Many skills have been developed this year in addition to our learning. We have looked at what our career profiles might be like when we are older and always enjoyed a good class debate – always entertaining! 6L - I am proud to call myself your class teacher for 2017-2018.

SECONDARY

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SECONDARY The first time you read this year book you were probably very excited and looking for your pictures and those of your friends, your family will have read it and you will have had some proud moments together reflecting about what you have achieved over the year, but then where did it go? The shelf, the coffee table, in a draw or under the bed! I am writing to you with the hope you are now rereading this many years from now. It is only with time and age do these yearbooks become extremely special to you and an opportunity for reflection not only of your time at school but an opportunity to look at yourself as a person. With over 25 Year teaching experience please believe me, the yearbook is part of your life as a developing adult, I can assure you it triggers so many memories – so treasure it forever. Thank you for being a Malvern College Egypt Secondary pupil. I joined unsure of what to expect but I found amazing pupils full of energy, a willingness to accept me and the eagerness to improve and demonstrate their full potential. MCE is a fantastic school, thank you for your contribution to the year gone by and even if you did not feel you played a major role in College activities or sport or drama or music – you have by just being here! So, thank you and my memories of you will always be with me. As the years go by and with every challenging situation and life hurdle that you may encounter, I hope that you remember and stay true to our school motto: “wise is the person who looks ahead”. I ask that you maintain an optimistic outlook on life and above all, be the best person that you can be. You will always be an MCE pupil and as such, I ask that you uphold the core values of all Malvern pupils especially integrity, empathy, gratitude and resilience. Continue to do the right thing, even when no one is watching. Be kind and strive to understand other peoples’ perspectives. It is difficult to be grateful if you feel people owe you, for this reason, never develop a sense of entitlement. Once you reach the mountain’s summit remain humble and show your gratitude to people that rekindled your desire to persevere when you felt defeated. It is my hope that many years from now, once you become or have become an adult the mere mention of Malvern College Egypt or a second reading of these words, will cause you to reminisce old friendships, conjure many fond memories and help bring a smile to your face. Know that you positively impacted the life of everyone at MCE, especially mine. Best wishes and thank you. Richard Moore Head of Secondary 67

It has been a fun filled rollercoaster of a year for 7M! We welcomed new students Selim, Iffah and Nesrin and not forgetting Nour, Zain and Mohammed who were also new this year. All six have settled in brilliantly, made lasting friendships and wonderful contributions to the class. 7M took part in all the school events such as the house shout, lip sync battle and sports day. 7M were also the winners of the world book day door decoration competition and were the class to receive the most merits in term one! We’ve had our ups and downs, but overall 7M have worked hard to become a close-knit group and I am extremely proud of them, well done!

This year has been an amazing learning experience for all students in 7A. The new arrivals have worked amazingly hard to catch up with the students from last year. The returning students have become amazingly organised, polite and efficiently productive secondary students. Most pleasing of all we all get along wonderfully and support each other through the good times and the difficult challenging times. Across the whole school calendar from sporting events to academic results; Computer scientist, to historians and puzzle solvers - 7A have embodied what it is to be a Malvern student. It has been a real team effort, and as the form tutor of 7A I am immensely proud.

It has been an excellent year for 8M, they have worked incredibly hard during the tutor and life skills lessons as well as across the other lessons in the College. It has been a pleasure to be their tutor for the academic year as I have personally been able to see each student grow into respectable, mature young person. Personal highlights for me as the 8M tutor were seeing all of the students compete in the sports days/interhouse competitions, international day and seeing the students take part in the various trips during activities week. I wish for all of the students to have a great summer vacation, to come back to MCE in September and continue with their personal and academic progression.

8A have enjoyed a productive year where academic progress has been complimented by representative performances on the sports fields and in the arts. The girls have made a significant contribution to the College football team with Malak Soliman and Jana Ahmed leading the charge. The College production of Dorothy in Oz saw three of the tutor group, Malak Riad, Mawada Abdel Kader and Nourhan Gendya take on central roles. It would have been four members but for the unfortunate skiing accident that left Omar Shalaby, the brave little lion, with a broken leg! A great year gone and new challenges on the horizon next year!

What a fantastic year we have had in Year 9M. The year has flown by so fast and has been packed with so many wonderful events and experiences. Y9M are a talented group and they never fail to amaze me with their smiles and laughter. My advice to them as they move up into year 10 is to maintain that positive attitude and can do tenacity. It has been an absolute pleasure and a delight to be the form tutor to such a wonderful class, their kindness and respect makes my job an absolute pleasure.

Having started as a new teacher and tutor at Malvern College Egypt, I could not have wished for a better tutor group. 9A have been so welcoming, polite, funny and kind to me – this is something that I will cherish. There are so many qualities that these students bring both as a whole group and on an individual basis. The array of talents on offer is astounding! They have matured over the course of the year and are starting to develop a sense of independence and resilience – true Malvern qualities. I look forward to seeing them progress further and grow into strong and caring adults.

10M epitomises what it is to be a Malvern College Egypt student. They are friendly and kind and helped me settle into Malvern College Egypt when I arrived. All the students have played a key part in the day-to-day involvement of the Malvern lifestyle. They have involved themselves fully in their academic studies, Started their IGCSE and still found time to represent their houses in the House events. These events included the poetry competition, swimming gala and sports day. One of the highlights was the continued practice to work on their lip-sync battle song. The song that was chosen was “best song ever” by One Direction. They are “the best form ever.”

It has been a fabulous year for 10A, new students and a new form tutor were added at the start of the year and all made very welcome. This form are a team and a very competitive one, proving this with their wins in the lip-sync battle and the best dressed group on World Book Day. As their form tutor I am very proud of how outgoing, kind, entertaining, comical and accepting they have been this year. They are a wonderful group of students who support each other with work or play and I hope that they have enjoyed every minute as much as I have.
