PRESIDENT'S LETTER

NATIONAL

cos

Hello my NCA friends, Christmas is my favorite time of the year (besides Halloween, of course). I come from a big family, and we know how to celebrate the holidays, especially Christmas. We cook, bake, listen to Christmas music, watch movies and TV specials, cut down our own Christmas tree, and most importantly, spend time together. When I was little, my dad played Santa for private parties, company and community events, and other special events - even for our family until I was old enough to recognize the guy in the red suit. He was even the Xerox Santa for 10 years. He was always looking for the BEST Santa Suit, bells, boots and everything Santa. As Christmas and the holiday season nears, Santa and his helpers will be feverishly looking for friendly, well-stocked shops and online stores to help find their Santa Suits, Mrs. Claus and elves costumes, accessories and, of course, decorations. Please take advantage of all that our Vendor Members have to offer for the holidays. This is a great way to finish the year on a strong note. We all made it through Halloween! I hope that you are all getting a little time to rest and enjoy time with friends and family. Sadly, I have to ask the not-so-fun question ... How was your Halloween? Unfortunately, most members of the NCA who responded to our annual post-Halloween survey reported that sales of costumes and masks were lower in 2023 compared to 2022. On a positive note, according to our survey respondents, the sales of accessories and makeup climbed, and costume rentals were up. We have high hopes for a better holiday season and 2024. Halloween 2024 will fall on a Thursday night which is much better than a Tuesday. Your Board of Directors has been working all year to give you great ideas to improve your sales for every season. We invite you to look back through our social media posts, bi-weekly newsletters, and The Costumer for fantastic ideas. Don't be afraid to reach out to directors or long-time members for suggestions. We have a general NCA Facebook Page and a Members' Only Page. We also have an Instagram Page. We have events all year long to help improve business, give amazing ideas and to get together as colleagues and friends. This past year we had our 100th Birthday Celebration, Spring Fling 2023, Zoom Fashion Show, the Preview of the 2024 NCA Bundle Program and a variety of get togethers. Another great way to see what is happening in our industry is to attend the Halloween & Party Expo in Las Vegas, January 23-25,2024. You can meet our members (including vendors), check out demonstrations and learn about new products. Are you thinking about your New Year's resolution? Why not make one you can keep. I invite you to become an active participant in the National Costumers Association in the new year. Like or follow us on our socials, join us for webinars and special events. This is YOUR NCA! Please help us make 2024 an amazing one for our organization and our industry! All my best for a festive holiday season and wonderful new year,

AN NCA EXCLUSIVE

Survey Reveals Scary Results from Halloween 2023 ByEdAvis The data has arrived, and it doesn't paint a pretty picture: According to NCA members, Halloween 2023 was one to forget. In an NCA survey in early November, 70 percent of respondents reported that sales of costumes and masks were "somewhat worse" or "much worse" in 2023 compared to 2022. Costume rentals fared equally poorly - 71 percent said those were "somewhat worse" or "much worse" this year. Why? An open -ended question in the survey asked store owners how they felt overall, and their responses provided some insight. On the negative side: • Shipping problems delayed stock arrivals until October. That complaint, which came from several store owners, was likely an anecdotal problem because in a question about stocking, only 21 percent of respondents said they received less than 75 percent of what they ordered. • Some vendors became competitors. As one respondent complained, "Vendors are increasingly and unashamedly competing direcdy with us on e-sales platforms, impacting sales and adding insult to injury." • Halloween fell on a Tuesday. Kids still want to trick or treat regardless of the day, but a mid-week Halloween definitely lessens the enthusiasm for adult parties - and those corresponding sales. • There was no Hollywood blockbuster movie to drive kids' costume sales. Barbie was good, of course, but that film could not compare to a Harry Potter movie, for example. • lnfiation had an impact. ''A lot of people did not have as much to spend on Halloween due to increased costs for basic necessities," one survey respondent wrote. • Amazon and the big box stores cut into sales. Lots of people complained about that ultimate bugaboo. One respondent said Spirit Halloween opened FIVE stores in his town! Hard to compete against that.

There were bright spots in the survey. Several respondents said they knew sales would dip after the pent-up demand post-Covid evaporated, so they planned accordingly and stocked a bit less. Those respondents said

IIVJ'§il!i'l'*¥11 6 COSTUMERS.ORG

COSTUME/MASK SALES in 2023 vs. 2022 • Much Worse: 24% • Somewhat Worse: 46% • Flat:22% Somewhat Better: 8%

Halloween lived up to- or rather "down to"- their diminished expectations. Here are a few of the positive, or at least semi-positive, comments made by survey respondents: "We were relieved by the end of the season. It was slower to build than usual and we were quite worried. Friday the 13th was magical- suddenly everyone realized that Halloween was approaching. Sales finally started to build and 'browsers' finally turned into 'shoppers."' ''Almost nothing was going on until the last 10 days. It poured on afterwards but off by a litde bit. Not bad but a litde underwhelming." "We were pleased. Even though we were down from last year by about 13 percent, we were even with 2021 and just looking at 2023 as the year EVERYONE was done with Covid. So back to 'normal' this year. Could have been just a litde higher, but overall, ok." There was some encouraging data about how many NCA members are using their member benefits to better stock their stores. Eighty-one percent of respondents said they use the Buyer's Group to get discounts; 31 percent ordered from the NCA Bundle Program; 25 percent ordered "last-minute" specials from NCA Vendor Members; and 28 percent ordered NCA Exclusive products. Halloween 2024 will fall on a Thursday night. Not a great night, but certainly better than Tuesday. Let's hope the other factors- inflation, lack of a blockbuster movie, tough competition, etc. - also improve in the coming year.

By Kathleen Furore Anne Monlezun's love affair with hats began at a very early age. "I always had a love for hats from the time that I was young and wearing hats to church," says Monlezun, the owner of Sassy Royals Hats in Lake Charles, Louisiana. What started as childhood excitement about wearing hats grew into a passion for making them. It's something Monlezun, a one-time dance teacher, did whenever she had the chance -whether it was for her dance students to wear during reviews or for the Lake Charles Mardi Gras celebrations that she worked on as a volunteer leader of a

"My stores stock hats year-round, for all seasons,"Monlezun says, noting that the retailers she works with merchandise a wide range of hats including celebratory toppers for New Year's Eve, Mardi Gras, Easter, the Kentucky Derby, Halloween and Christmas, plus showgirl hats, fashion hats and fascinators. The hats Monlezon offers include a broad, unique inventory not available at big box stores and pop-up shops. But even if those big box stores and pop-ups tried to compete, it wouldn't faze Monlezon because she's confident in what she offers.

"I have never worried about competition. If you have a good, unique product at a reasonable price, and you offer a good service, , your customers always return. -Anne Monlezun Mardi Gras krewe. "A hat was always needed!" she says. Ultimately, Monlezun turned her passion into profit: In 1987, she launched Glitz-Teaz Pasties, a division of Appliques with Glitz Inc., a company that also included a hat division called Sassy Royals Hats. "Burlesque hats were a natural for the pastie line and sold beautifully," recalls Monlezun, who sold Glitz-Teaz Pasties in 2017 but retained Sassy Royals. And her love affair with hats has continued!

"I have never worried about competition," says Monlezun, who offers this advice to costumers worried about the competition. "If you have a good, unique product at a reasonable price, and you offer a good service, your customers always return." Adding a hat to a costume display, she says, can provide maximum visual impact. "There just isn't anything like a matching hat - it will always turn heads!" she exclaims.

A Year-Round Attraction

Customizalion and Classes Help BuDd Sales

Hats, Monlezun notes, offer a wealth of opportunity for costumers looking for ways to drive business and remain competitive throughout the year.

All of Sassy Royals' hats are custom creations that attach to a small headband that is easily hidden in a customer's hair. That kind of customized approach to design can help COSTUMERS.ORG

stores appeal to customers looking for creative toppers, according to Monlezun. "I offer a service that people can send a photo of a costume and I'll make a matching hat. I have a great clientele of customers who trust my designs and order assortments on a regular basis by simply giving me their colors or their costume photos," she says. "Remember, a customer will purchase a fascinator or fashion hat for everyday if she falls in love with it." Hosting special events also can help attract customers and help build hat sales. "I offer a a tea-time hat class that includes a hat box filled with hat frames, trims, and everything needed to make a Sassy Royal Hat. [Participants] are seated at tables with glue guns, scissors, mirrors, and all that's needed for a fun-filled time trimming a fascinator," Monzelun says. "I give them a talk on how they can trim their creation, and we end the class with a tea party. It's a great way to bring people into your store, and word will spread as to the fun that was had by all." Monlezun also reaches out in other ways to create a buzz for her business. "I donate hats to benefits - there is nothing better than a person arriving for a dinner party in a Sassy Royals Hat and turning heads," she says of the impact that that kind of outreach

can have on a business' success. Monlezun has one final message she wants to share with her fellow costumers: "NCA is a wonderful group and ALL costumers need to belong!" she says. Kathleen Furore is the editor of 1he Costumer.

HAT TRENDS According to Anne Monlezun, owner of Sassy Royals Hats in Lake Charles, Louisiana, today's best-selling hats include Victorian {also called Stage Coach) Riding Hats with a veil, Gatsby-style headbands, and pirate-themed headwear. Showgirl headpieces also are popu1ar options that are "worn all year long for one reason or another," as are large, casual-brimmed, Lainey Wilson-style hats. "My most popu1ar theatrical headpiece is my My Fair Lady, with a large brim," Monlezun says.

BUSINESS BASICS Scholastic Theater: Tips from a Business and Tech Pro By Ed Avis

A Facebook reminderfrom Theatre House: "Fallproductions arefost approaching.. make sure you're ready...with productsfrom Theatre House.»

Editor's Note: Marty Boyer owns 7heatre House, a retailer that supplies costumes to school theaters across the United States. Boyer, who bought the business in 2017, is not a "theater guy.» Rather, he is talented businessman and tech innovator. In this interview with NCA Executive Director Ed Avis, Boyer explains how he has grown 7heatre business by applying his business and tech talents.

packet. A vendor packet includes everything about your business, such as the best way for schools to place orders, how you accept payment, your payment terms, shipping costs, return policies, things like that. Additionally, schools expect a W-9 and a certificate of insurance. Mter you do that, every district is going to ask you to put that in the format that they like. A VIS: Does the school then start ordering from you?

ED AVIS: What's your first step in getting theatrical orders from schools? MARTY BOYER: Every school district varies, but the first thing everybody should do is create a pretty robust vendor

14

COSTUMERS.ORG

BOYER: Well, typically there are a few other steps. Some schools will require you to sign into their purchasing system, which is also called a bidding system or an electronic vendor registration. Then they'll notify you, "Hey, we don't promise

you work, but you can become a vendor at this point for our school." Eventually they'll say there is an opportunity to bid on something, usually a wide swath of work like "instructional supplies" [not just a particular theatrical production]. Finally, after you put in the bid, the teachers can begin to buy from you. AVIS: So, how would that work? Would the theater teacher say, "Hey Marty, we need the costumes for a production of Annie"?

BOYER: Yeah, typically after they see we're an approved vendor and they can do business with us, they'll look at our website and be like, "Hey, yeah, they have some of the stuff I'm looking for."Then some teachers will ask for a quote for what they need, or they will give us a purchase order, or they just order it and then submit the bill to their purchasing department. AVIS: Theatre House is an established vendor in thousands of school districts. Did you fill out the paperwork for every one of them?

BOYER: Well, some school districts don't require it at allthey're pretty loose. Generally, the larger the school system [the more likely they are to require it]. For example, New York City has 1,819 schools in their public school system, and all of their purchase orders are funneled through one system. But if you go to a rural county in Kansas or Kentucky or something like that, they're probably going to say, "Hey, send us W-9 and we can buy from you." But it just stands to reason that the more people you have in a school trying to buy, the more discipline you need to have around the purchasing process. Here's a pro tip: Have somebody at your company become a notary public, because a lot of schools require things to be notarized, so having somebody on your staff who's a notary will save you gobs of time. AVIS: Once you've established yourself as a vendor to a school, do you always get orders?

BOYER: It varies. For example, if we go into Chicago, there is going to be a number of great stores that have probably been registered in the system over time. So, Chicago public schools will a little bit harder. Ifl go to a rural Kansas or rural Texas, it might be an entirely a different prospect because we're going to be one of the few vendors who took the time to pay attention to this school and insert our name in their system. And my thing is, as soon as somebody buys from me once, I'm going to keep their business, they're not going anywhere. AVIS: How often do you make contact with these schools?

BOYER: As part of our CRM, our customer relationship management, every day from May through August or September, I schedule 500 emails and send out an updated W-9.1he

AVIS: Previously you mentioned that you're not a theater guy at heart, you're more of a tech guy. Do you think that gives you an advantage?

reason I only schedule that many each day is so that ifl have bounce backs or someone needs updated information, it gives us enough time to process and update each of the records appropriately. Those emails serve as a tickle for people to say, "Hey, we haven't bought from them," or, "Oh, we have a new purchasing process." A lot of your registrations and your awards are only for a

BOYER: No. In fact, I believe it's a detriment. When I meet people who are running exceptional shops, they tend to have an authentic passion in this industry, and they tend to have grown up in it. And when I see those people, there's so much that they've taken for granted in terms of their knowledge base. It blows me away. It's just unbelievable. AVIS: Any last pieces of advice? BOYER: I just want to reiterate how important it is to create a robust vendor packet. And if another NCA member reaches out to me individually, I'll send them my vendor packet. I'm not afraid of competition!

part of our CRM, our customer relationship management, every day from May through August or September, I schedule 500 emails and send out an updated W-9 ... Those emails serve as a tickle for people to say, 'Hey, we haven't bought from them,' or, 'Oh, we have a new purchasing process." -Marty Boyer year. So, we keep a spreadsheet of them all, and we have people who are always updating those vendor registrations. AVIS: Other than keeping the registrations up to date, what other marketing do you do to the schools? BOYER: We send two emails per month. One of those emails is educational, like, "Here's a new technique."The other is about product. We also have several automated notes in our CRM, such as, "Oh, we haven't seen you in a while," or "You bought about this time last year. Do you need anything?" We keep an active Facebook, we keep an active lnstagram and X, and we do a little bit on YouTube. Then we have SEO style marketing, for lead generation. AVIS: So, all that keeps Theatre House in front of customers? BOYER: Right - but remember that my first customer is not always the end customer. My first customer might be the purchasing group at a school district. Only when they say I can sell to the teacher does the teacher become my customer.

MEMBER PROFILE Evil lzzy's "Halloween Nerd" Starts Costume Shop in Phoenix ByEdAvis Jeremy Veal loves Halloween. "I'm a lifelong Halloween nerd. If I could live every day as Halloween, I would do that," he says. Veal is taking a big step in that direction: He and his wife, Cynthia, are in the process of opening Evil Izzy's, a costume shop in Phoenix, Arizona. They plan to open their doors in the first quarter of 2024. "Really when it comes down to what I love about Halloween, it's not just the holiday, but the costumes," he says. "The more I experience life, the more I see that people have a strong desire to dress up, whether it's Halloween or Christmas or Valentine's Day or whatever.
