Welcome to the Basilikos for 2021. If you are like me you have probably wondered why the Mackay Christian College yearbook is called Basilikos. Just to scratch that itch, the term ‘basilikos’ means “belonging to the king” in Greek. As a Christian school, we see our entire college as belonging to God, the king. From a Christian world view, this book is a celebration of everything we as a college have done for the year 2021 and all of it is done for the Glory of the one who created us. That is why the book is called the “Basilikos’, it is God’s yearbook. 2021, the first year in the new ‘COVID normal’ era. This year saw us being able to once again host and be involved in the myriad of activities we have traditionally undertaken (as long as we socially distanced and logged in using the Government’s people tracking app of course).
Not only did we resume those activities, including some that were delayed from the previous year, we engaged in them with passion! Our Open Day was a great example, attendance was almost 50% higher than 2019, and the displays and fun were probably 100% better. This year also saw the beginning of the Formula student programme for Year 11 and 12 students studying at the Trade Training Centre as well as a slew of amazing performances by our students in the academics, sports, arts and every other area we could get involved in. Congratulations to the students and a big thank you to all of the dedicated staff who made these activities, learning and achievements happen. 2021 was another year where I was proud to be the principal of this awesome school. Enjoy this book as a glimpse into our amazing year together. Dr Gallogray

What a cracker of a year! As College Captain of Mackay Christian College for 2021, it was my absolute pleasure to devote my time to assisting my fellow peers and teachers for a successful year.

At the beginning of the year, the college leadership team attended the annual GRIP leadership conference. This was a great day and opportunity to gain skills and strategies to become a more effective leader. These skills allowed the leadership team and me to lead the college through an incredible and collaborative year. I have been very grateful for all of my mates and teachers who have made the senior experience exhilarating and engaging learning experience.

My final year at MCC was memorable with the first year that MCC TTC attended the Formula Student Program Regularity. This saw TTC students and I build various components for a small-scaled race car and allowed us to race it at Lakeside Raceway. The opportunities that MCC gives to students is one thing that makes school, especially the senior year, very memorable. As I reflect on the past 13 years I have spent at the college, and I am sure to miss a variety of things; however, I look forward to the future and the challenges ahead and put all of my skills and knowledge to work. Most of all, “Keep the shiny side up.”

One of many blessings God has gifted me within 2021 is the role of Female College Captain. Over the past years, as I admired other captains, I had noticed they took leadership in many events within our school.
Personally, being able to take leadership in such a huge event where the whole school came to celebrate is one of the most memorable things you could go through in life.
One significant event, in particular, is Founders Day, where as a school, we celebrate the day our college was built.
Not only does it show the student led environment Mackay Christian College is driven by, but it displays our values when we come together through Christlikeness, Learning, Excellence, Attitude and Respect.
Due to Covid last year, celebrating Founder’s Day looked slightly different, with only our seniors and Year 6 class attending. This year, my fellow captains and I was blessed with the news that Founders Day would be celebrated with the whole school again.
Being chosen to be the 2021 vice-captain was an achievement I never thought I would have gone for.

But being the vice-captain has been a responsibility I have enjoyed thoroughly, as I was able to use this as an opportunity to define myself as a leader further. It has helped shape the person I’m becoming and who I want to be. Our captains spent many of our lunchtimes throughout the year either in a classroom running the student council or with Mr Hopper discussing the important aspects of school that each quickly approached.
I have attended MCC since Prep. Through my 13 years of schooling, I can say 2021 was the best year of them all, filled with many great moments and memories. However, one stands out above them all - the 2021 ANZAC Day service.

Being a College Vice-Captain allowed me to participate in many different opportunities and experiences. This year, I had the privilege, along with my fellow College Captains, of placing a wreath to honour the fallen soldiers. This was very humbling as it gave us a closeup experience in the ANZAC service and an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of ANZAC Day.
Founders Day will forever be an important but memorable day for myself and the future college captains of Mackay Christian College.
The significant two events included Anzac Day and Founders Day, where we each played an important part. Being a captain is also about being willing to help behind the scenes. It’s not always about being up the front. This last ever school year went by so fast, and I was happy to represent my cohort. Although, at times, school is difficult. It does end quicker than you would realise, as it feels like just yesterday, I started grade 12. It is now your turn to lead, future captains, but realise that leading by example isn’t always easy. Just remember God has a plan for you.
We honoured those who gave their lives for our freedom and what we have today, lest we forget. All of these experiences and memories have helped shape me into the person I am today. Without the support of all the staff of MCC, I would not be this person. To all the future leaders of MCC, lead for the right reasons and serve others while forging your own path and creating your own identity, creating a better version of yourself in everything that you do.

2021…What a year! Despite the introduction of clubs during House Family time on Wednesdays. We us captains still valued every moment spent with the Averill family. We started the year strong winning both Senior and Junior School Swimming Carnivals, but our Mighty Averill Spirit didn’t stop there. Through teamwork and great levels of participation from all ages, we managed to achieve a very close second place at Athletics Carnival and Cross Country Carnival. Averill House has represented the success of its members at state and national levels for athletics and academics and as captains, we couldn’t be prouder of our House Family’s achievements. As students we appreciate the opportunity to be the 2021 Averill House Captains and leaders of the school. We would also like to acknowledge our House Family Coach, Ms. McQuaker for the support and guidance we have received throughout the year. A big thanks to the other Year 12 students for their co-operation. For future captains, good luck with your studies and leading the family, always stay “Mighty in Spirit”.

Thank you to our Dennis House Family for the non-stop support and enthusiasm, despite the many challenges we faced this year. It was hard losing 2 of our captains this year, but you guys made it so much easier for us to push through. To the 2022 Dennis House Family Captains, we hope that next year will be just as special as ours has been, if not more for you guys. What an excellent, exciting and extraordinary year for Evans. As captains, this year flew past but don’t be mistaken; we still achieved a lot. We showed the rest of the competition how to soar and to serve by winning Cross Country, Athletics Carnival and the House Family Fun Day soccer competition. To say this year was a breeze; however, is far from the truth as we did face some adversity. Our biggest challenge was losing our beloved House Family Couch, Mrs Corry. Mrs Corry was our Evans House Family Coach for two years and has since moved on, leaving the role for Mrs Butler to fill and she has not shied away. Mrs Butler has stepped up and led the way for Evans to finish off this year on a high note. As much as we had a rough ride, we always had help and support around us to get us through the rough times. Even though we as captains may get the recognition, it is those behind the scenes and the rest of our cohort that deserve the credit. They are the people that keep us level-headed, and remind us what is important and the requirements we must fulfil as House Captains. It is our legacy that we have left behind that makes us most proud. Our house family is filled with the best kids in the school, and it is shown in how they act and portray themselves. Evans never goes down dying and we always try to the end, and it is seen in everything we do. At the end of the day, Evans is the best and we always soar above the rest.

2021 was an eventful, fun-filled year with weekly house family time, the introductions of chapel clubs, sporting carnivals and house family chapels. We’ve enjoyed spending time with each other, and getting to know our newest Young House Family members. We enjoyed the new flexibility of chapel clubs that allowed the students to participate in things they were interested in. We would like to give a special shout out to the Young House Family athletes who broke records, made it to district and state level comps, and were age champions in their fields. You guys are amazing! We want to thank Young House Family for their continued support and for contributing positively to our House Family spirit, because team work really does make the dream work. Special thanks to the Young House Family mentor teachers, your support and encouragement was really appreciated.
