March - April Issue 13

The Wits Freshers party:A glimpse of what really happened.

Mi ed’s note

A couple of weeks ago I watched Jerusalema, the movie that starred Rapulane Seiphemo and Kenneth Nkosi among other stars. Apart from marveling at the overall production,I was specially intrigued by the plot and how the exploration of themes such as crime and poverty were linked to the present state of that our democratic country was in. I pondered on the ideas that democracy promised to bring for ordinary people, which was the central theme within the movie and was nicely summarized by one character who said: All I ever wanted from this democracy, this new South Africa was a house in Sandton and a Mercedes” (Something to that effect, correct me if I am wrong). This led me into a discussion about what human rights are all about with a friend that I was watching the movie with. So as we celebrate human rights day on the 21st of March, let us clearly understand what the concept of “Human Rights” is all about and also merge it with the definition of citizens/citizenship and what our roles and duties within a democratic state are as citizens. Yes we have a right to housing and clean water that the government should provide but along with these comes responsibilities and knowing what our needs are from what we want. Although this month’s issue does not delve deeper into issues of human rights, it explores a lot of themes around self-help and self-reliance such as how to get a part-time job on page 9 and overcoming the conflict of choosing a career/study path based on the financial rewards alone and not the passion, page 3.With that said Micampus Mag also reviews the movie ‘Material’ which a lot of people can identify with on page 11. The point that I and this month’s issue are raising is that, begin to learn to value yourself through the choices that you make so that you can truly understand the notion of human rights.

hat value does one place on a dream with living, and a life with giving? Where do we begin to deprive the world a say in our steps going forward? We come alive at the burning of a fire in us, when our hearts are in harmony with the reality that was constructed by the very things we call – dreams. Life is a never ending trail of find and search, seek and look. Independence comes at a price, one we pay the minute we inherit it from our success towards a life outside the comfort zone constructed by our parents. Life surely is a wager between Passion and Paper. The basics as we know in South Africa –post the divides of the past, and perhaps of the latter – is for us to grace the ladder of the education system that tries to defy all odds by cropping up a drove of potential economic pioneers and contributors. The equation may be somewhat like this; set of a generation, plus unalterable hope and faith, multiplied by a high striking budget. Truth be told, this is a formula up for debate and modification come the apex of our life time. The result, us the youth of South Africa, is subject to a world of treasurers, diverse and somewhat absolute when one finds them.

3

Obtaining a degree is one thing, the latter, another Goliath on its own. A dream in our life time has a share index on its own, one that is in our hands to devalue or add value to. The floor plan to that being the cross road where one has to choose their passion or the money; however, has one ever thought of their co existence? What then their dual benefit in the world and society that we inhabit? Young as we are, we chase after the dreams in the primordial stages of maturity, with money being a past thought in the future vision. It is the bubbles that we constructed as teens, which are at times, what we are incapable of escaping. The time and space frame that only day dreaming keeps up like a sky scrapper in Beijing, when we awake, it is all reality that may decides its demolishment or continued and assisted constriction. Reality – a sand hip that moves beyond the core of the earth, layered with rocky obstacles, whose depth only titans know off, with a deeply hidden treasure. The treasure? The life we all aim for, one of many constituent treasures; wealth, drive, inspiration to go on for more, successes, and perhaps for some going beyond the call of providence. Passion invites paper like a sixteen year old does her friends to her sweet sixteen, you can bet your money on it.

The greats in business, government, leadership, academia, and other dynamic fields, have been through grilling nights and unpleasant days with fire burning in their bellies like dragons. It is not that these people did not have the young dream of being millionaires before 21, it’s not because they found it tough, but they yearned for the thrill of the journey to the top of the food chain in their respective field, where their dreams are now constructing their realities. My dad used to tell me “love does not put food on the table”, but nor does misery. How do you picture yourself after graduation or even in that perfect job? Do you see yourself being the accountant having the misery party with the calculator? The doctor who stars in “Greys Anatomy Gone Wrong”? Awaiting the end of the month like a blood hound lurking around pay day? - I reckon not. The reason is one that varies with each person. The primary ones sound a bit like this; “my mom said I should…” or” my dad is a doctor, so he and I thought it’s a great thing.” These are the reasons that cast out the fires in the young dreamer who may have been a Benjamin Zander, Newton, Obama, but because money and job security clouded their judgment, young people find themselves repeating the cycle that had their parents by the throat, subsequently as parents’ themselves years down the line, they enforce their failed dreams on their kids. When does it end? The war over passion in choice of career, is won when we begin to look at the journey with optimism and not

the speed of attaining the financial success, unless of course a memo was given out for death dates? We ought to enjoy the journey of following our dreams, the challenges that come along with them and more so the lessons that minor failures subject us to. Passion harnesses a volcanic-fire in you, whose flames challenges may flicker but nothing can extinguish. Paper is a candle when the electricity is gone; it keeps you alight for that moment to glow, but when the lights go on it finds no darkness to shine. The steps to a content life begin when we deprive the world of its voices in our choices. The leaps begin to acquire distance when our dreams have paved the way, and our determination has clothed our shoes, and our spirits are like Trojan Horses. Money partners with misery to attend the wedding between passion and success, and reminisces about what could have been if it succumbed to passion while it had the chance. Is better to feed the fire in you with passion or paper?

f you find yourself short of loving the phrase “I am an African”, then you are a leap away from realizing the beauty of this content. The home of intellects I would like to think, this of course after gravitating towards the worlds of great leader, one of the last breed of organic intellect, our former state President Thabo Mbeki. The former President had the honor of being the 8th speaker at the 8th Dullah Omar Memorial Lecture that took place at the University of the Western Cape themed ; Reflections on Peacemaking, State Sovereignty and Democratic Governance in Africa. It was at the munificence of the Community Law Centre that I had the pleasure of being at the keynote address of this annual lecture. The apex of the matter should be started with the recognition of the work that was done by Mr. Omar, his family and the work that is being continued by the Community Law Council in having had the courage through the years even when Mr. Omar was alive in hoisting the flag of change in the country, and other African countries before and post conflicts that this country has been marred with. I am a change agent slash intellectual groupie, so when the sound of everything seems to favour the great man who had the keynote on point, you shall pardon me for such behaviour – should it arise. The struggle songs, and praises from the crowded main hall opened the curtain for the man of the moment to deliver what was a lecture that remains pivotal to all change agents, young leaders and all Africans alike. The former president opened the lecture by acknowledging the memory of Dullah Omar, his family, the Community Law Centre and the dignitaries that were

5

present. To make sure that I do not lose the integrity of the very words that I gravitated to for at least half an hour if not more, I will indulge you with key texts from his presentation. Former president Mbeki had pivotal points that encompassed almost every matter that has its roots from history, from the centre of South Africa to all other African states, and the forces that have come to find flaw in African solutions for African problems. Mr. Mbeki had great praises fro Mr. Omar in that he said,” We should speak of what it is that makes us to value Dullah Omar as we do, as an outstanding comrade and African, who belongs among the galaxy of stars that point our way to a better future…” Which to many attendants of the lecture, took this to heart, and computed the essence of what it meant to be liberation advocate. What was pointed was the need to “…realise the renewal of Africa, and contribute to the construction of a new world order of equality among the peoples and a shared prosperity...” This is one thing that the Former states man has been advocating for - for years - which perhaps in our life time might be propagated by our generation. On issue of state governance, he mentioned current issues that affect such and the manner in which certain “global powers” are disempowering democratic states in subtle yet effect ways. What remains true till this day to me is that organic intellectuals such as Mbeki shy not from calling a spade a spade. He managed to lay bear the dirty laundry that has occurred in Libya, and Côte d‟Ivoire, were he engaged with the possible resolutions that were being planned for African solutions to the challenges that these two countries have passed in recent years. The truth of the matter is that; “the UN Security Council willfully

elected to ignore the decisions of the African Union, treating these decisions relating to an African country, and therefore us, the peoples of Africa, with absolute contempt”. He captured the essence of the lecture’s theme by quoting the eminent Nigerian and African writer and thinker, Chinua Achebe, who warned of such when he wrote; “Warriors will fight scribes for the control of your institutions; wild bush will conquer your roads and pathways; your land will yield less and less while your offspring multiply; your houses will leak from the floods and your soil will crack from the drought; your sons will refuse to pick up the hoe and prefer to wander in the wilds; you shall learn ways of cheating and you will poison the cola nuts you serve your own friends. Yes, things will fall apart.” He Was clear with regards to us as Africans acting “unequivocally and in unity” to “…reinforce democracy, develop our own capacity to resolve our conflicts, committed to find African solutions to African problems, implement in all our countries the all-Africa policies adopted through the OAU and the AU” and to “use these policies to structure our individual and collective relations with the rest of the world…” These words remain as greater catalyst to all young people’s minds, those who were present and those who were absent. The essence of the lecture was captured in the most life moving manner by former president Mbeki, and thus it is my pleasure to subsequently close this article in his closing words;

“what shall we, the Africans, do, regardless of the Continent of our abode, to ensure that tomorrow belongs to us!”

Getting a part-time job can prove difficult for most students as it needs someone who is focused and can juggle around with studying and working. The pressure can be too much especially if you have classes and essay on this side and a job that needs your attention on the other side of town. But most students who this will tell you that is doable and needs discipline. These students’ jobs also assist with gaining experience and thus building your CV. There are student jobs on and off campus and all you need to do is ask around. Most departments at varsity and libraries often need students to assist with some odd jobs here and there so enquire at your nearest library or department/school. Some galleries or museums in the university often also need assistants so these can be great working spots too and the cash is good as well. Doing Promotions are also a very good platform to network and then get a better job. However this kind of job needs someone who is mobile/has a car and can drive to different areas, It also needs someone who is well outspoken and at ease around people. Most students who have done this kind of work say it pays well as their rates per hour are reasonable and plus they usually take place during the weekends. So look out for any promotional personnel’s recruiting on your campus. Another job that pays well is waitressing. If you get to work at a very classy restaurant then you can be sure to expect good tips from business people and academics alike, provided you give them good service of course! This also needs someone outgoing and people driven. So there are jobs out there, they just need someone who is proactive and persistent but also willing to learn.I will not exaggerate or lie and say that it will be easy working in these kinds of environments however they will prove to be challenging but a learning curve as well.

This proudly South African movie is a must-see according to me and Barry Ronge who apparently was thrown into a crying fit upon seeing it .So is that good! I won’t guarantee that it will make you cry like Barry Ronge but it will definitely get you laughing. Its genre is a mixture of drama and comedy or you can simply combine the two and call it a dramedy .The storyline though not original, is quiet catchy as it deals with a young Muslim man (Riaad Moosa)’s conflict between his love for comedy and his father’s wishes for him to take over the family business. It is one of those films that students can easily identify with due to the conflict between parents and their children. I mean how many of us for instance are at varsity studying towards a degree that we don’t like but due to parental pressures we are doing it out of duty and obligation? Although the movie is set round the lives of an ordinary Muslim family, the issues tackled as said above are universal and also showcase the underlying theme that family is important. This movie is that kind that should be enjoyed with friends or even family after a picnic or when you feel that the books are getting to you. You can relax, unwind and laugh your head back into concentration and focus with this movie but most importantly it will remind you of the value of family and support. With a cast that includes Riaad Moosa and Vincent Ebrahim, it deserves a whooping four out of five so go out there and support this proudly South African movie because it illustrates that the SA film industry is flourishing. Mi Gadgets When I think of the etymology of the word gadget I cannot help it but frantically smile because it puts a chip on my shoulder. Back then, during the turn of the 18th century-- calling a technical object a gadget was a blatant act of idiocy. It would mean you forgot its name. Nowadays you hear people say “my gadget this... my gadget that” it sounds cool and all but the main idea behind calling it a gadget is far from cool. Struggle No More. MiCampus Mag has come to your rescue... as of today you will know your gadgets by heart as we introduce you to this year’s products of technological brilliant thinking. APPLE IPHONE 5 The Apple iPhone makes up for the iPhone 4s which, upon its advent, disappointed scores of apple fans with its obvious features. Apple does have disappointing tendencies at times.

APPLE IPAD 3 It’s also thoughtful of us to let you know that these may cost an arm and a leg at times but they are worth their utilities. The Apple iPad3 was finally launched in February after an ample number of affording fans have been eagerly waiting for it. According to the verdict many were pleased. This gadget charges and transfers data wirelessly.

13

PLAYSTATION VITA After their successful sales of PlayStation Portable which sold 71.4 million units worldwide, Sony is at it again and is set to release PlayStation Vita. With its gaming capabilities it seems more impressive than iPad2. LIVESCRIBE PULSE This gadget is meant for people who have better auditory or aural skills. It writes and, at the same time, records everything from lecture notes, personal memos etc. It can also be connected to a computer to download all the audio recorded. With this you take your lecturer to your kitchen, bedroom, dining room, sitting room and even in the bathroom, you can listen to your lecturer while taking a bath. PROJECTION ALARM CLOCK If you get yourself one of these I doubt if you will ever be late for anything be it a tut, lecture, interview or a meeting and I don’t believe you will rock-up your sweater on a sunny-day or a vest on a cold day because the Projection alarm Clock wakes you up and gives you an up to date full weather forecast.

WINDOWS 8 Windows re-imagined and reinvented. Another user friendly operating system (Wndows 8) which is said to be more useful for business utilities has come to the rescue. It’s faster and fluid than the previous Windows 7. Getting one might be the most cost effective way of shinning among your friends.

1. Word Fashions 2. 1 years 6 months 3. Selling Lefoko clothing to the youth 4. A businessman is someone who do things by planning, organizing and managing resources. while on the other hand an entrepreneurs is more on an intuitive person, follows instincts and exploit opportunities. 5. I dint think so 5 years ago, but now since Im doing a Commerce degree I think it is convinient to study, but not necessary. The great entrepreneurs such as the Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and The Rockefellers have proven that it is all about discipline, consistency, vision and practicality. In which these skill you can’t learn from school. 6. Financial Management is a key to success for every enterprise; no business can run without money. So, I think financial literacy is the most important thing in business success. As the legendary Warren Buffet commanded, “ Rule number 1, never lose money. Rule no2 never forget rule no1”. 7. Yes, I self- funded the business with R20000, and then 6 student investors fromm Wits helped me with the working capital. 8. I have been an entrepreneur since the age of 6. I was selling sweets, and developed as years go by to Atchar, snacks, Ice, clothing, menoto. I had a second hand book business at Wits, which ran for two years, I branched int calculators. Then in 2010 I started selling USB’s under the mentorship of the legendary Sbu. Lefoko came, and I did my thing. 9. Consistency make us different from competitors, the rest is secret. 10. Hectic, I hate bunking classes, but at the same time I love running my business. would you believe that I attend 30% of my lectures in a busy week. Which is not cool to my parents, but I try to hard to study extra. I am always ahead with chapters. 11. Black South Africans have a relaxing nature; they only work when they have to. To be an entrepreneur, you have to be self- motivated. Something like 10 years to go before we get real entrepreneurs from our youth. The one in the field are working, we even have great ones, but the numbers are skewed. 12. For sure, we work with different people from different backgrounds, we need to respect individual preferences, values, cultures and religions. South Africa is a great country with great policies, we need to know and embrace them.

e are all in different institutions or professions for varied reasons but a commonality among those reasons is a burning desire or rather killer instinct for success. In a capitalist dominated society how does one contemplate about success without ascribing it to prospective financial benefit and ample profit. At school financial education instilled in us, more often than not, teaches us survival mechanism in a capitalist economy (are our political leaders who have longed to nationalised privately owned conglomerate entities familiar with the latter?) 24/02/12 marks the day during which this year’s first informative ANCYL business seminar took place at the University of the Witwatersrand. With T-bo touch the main speaker and other distinguished guests. Thabo Molefe whose swag resembles Kevin Hart’s is one of a few young South Africans who ‘went and came back’ despite his numerous achievements attained abroad get it all from his résumé (http://www.tvsa. co.za/default.asp?blogname=shugasblogiw ood&articleID=7861). He is undoubtedly an icon who has never ceased to inspire and motivate young people since the beginning of the glory days of his career.

“the entertainment industry is not for the faint-hearted, people can laugh in your face and cut your throat behind your back”.

19

He introduced his topic as: Brand building and management. “Marketing is essential” T-bo said. As a person or an individual you can have all the necessary skills and qualifications but if you do not have necessary marketing skills you’re doomed to failure. Most academics

do know that you can obtain a degree that is in great demand or not in demand at all and still fail to secure a good job, its true but do we know the underlying factors? Such people become statistics of unemployable as opposed to unemployed. Sometimes getting a good job or cracking lucrative deals depends ‘NOT’ on your qualification but on your basic marketing skills. In other words as an individual, to survive in this society you need to have soft skills that enable you to advertise, market, promote and sell your brand. Yes some are born with it and some hustle hard for it (Grind hard as MiCampus crew would put it). Thabo also said “your presentation is your brand NOT your degree”. From that quote alone the entire seminar took a different turn. As a brand you need to understand your value, “don’t be in a position when you start making demands when you’re not in demand” repeatedly alluded T-Bo. As he continued he also clarified that he does mean to tell people to start undermining themselves. According to him a person is a living and most productive brand, what we really need to do is build ourselves before establishing ourselves in the market. At times you may find that people extort while they are still replaceable. Now back the man of the hour – T-Bo Touch said “the entertainment industry is not for the faint-hearted, people can laugh in your face and cut your throat behind your back”. The world is cruel, toxic and hostile. Don’t allow people who don’t impress you to depress you. You may sometimes trip or even fall trying to get to your destiny; your fall might be caused by people other than yourself. The key word to the solution

would be—RESUSCITATE. Facing it and bouncing back is the only way through. Trials are trials and challenges are challenges they will not disappear on account of your likes. We would have less suicide cases if we all viewed failure as a temporary setback. Here is something to think about for the rest of the year, by Herbert Kufman. Failure is only postponed success as long as courage coaches ambition. The habit of persistence is the habit of victory. Your input determines your output: He said “Don’t put in lemons when you’re expecting grapes”. Well how much time do we spend doing positive as opposed to negative things? Well it calls for a rigorous introspection. He also put an emphasis on the importance of a person’s upbringing and attributed his success to certain elements of his background (coming from a prayerful community, at the Vaal). Some of his direct quotes which are not included in the article: :Enemies are there to keep you aligned in your parameters. :Take both good and bad compliments on the same scale. :Arrogance is sometimes mistaken for confidence.

Mi Fun LAST MONTH MICAMPUS RELEASED A FRESHERS EDITION AND I THOUGH WE CLEARLY DEFINED WHAT A FRESHER IS, WHERE ALL THOSE PEOPLE THAT CAME TO THE WITS FRESHERS FIRST YEARS. ARE THESE IMMACULATE EVENTS REALLY FOR FIRST YEARS? MAYBE THAT’S A TOPIC FOR ANOTHER DAY. ON 2 MARCH 2012 FROM 18H00 THE WITS FRESHERS WENT DOWN THIS WAY. DJ Naives was the opening act as always he never disappoints. The popular American music HipHop is Naives preference and it was clear it is also a lot of Witsies preference. He went off stage by playing Lil Wayne tracks and that when everybody was finished with dances.

“You know Fresh does not rock up to an event before 12” said Siyabonga “scoop”. At the Wits freshers he did rock up. Critics said what is a crock such as fresher doing here but hey the freshers would not have been complete without him. Oh man the track Gabriel will rock the boat for long, or is it because it was Fresh that was playing it. FACT: Fresh will be relevant for long. We all can leanr a lot from Fresh.

Indeed Sphe Spectecular rocked up on stage 20 minutes before his scheduled slot. Then it was a HipHop, House, HipHop loved it. Sphe gave a few Mzansi Cats a flow played Pro Kid, 985 gata and the crowd screamed their lungs out. Now the songs were clearly “shaying sphe ngaphakathi” he danced to every song with the crowd.

21

Next on the line up was MiCasa crew. Rumour says they were the first to arrive, now that’s taking a Job serious boys. Who can offcourse the White man’s Video in Alex speaking Zulu. Offcourse the trumpted was blown as ever. The performace highlight has to be when J’Something took off his jacket. The smooth melody really anchored the Wits students. Sanbonani.

You know someone is enjoying something when they do it with passion, Black Motion clearly fits this description. They’ve got to be the best performance of the night. Everyone was sweating including camera men. Are all Djs dancers because Black Motion guys indeed are dancers. Innovation of playing from the back right there DJ Murder (Robert). Keep it up with the djembe and African tradition dressing you’ll make international fronts. Talk about an extra value for

22

Mi Fun ...money performance. All over campus everyone was moving their boody. I guess BobSter still has a lot to learn, and he will because he is at University of Music South Africa, Kalawa campus. He plays tribal better than most house DJs. The soothing rhythm took most Witsies by storm. The Pause Play was clearly not working for Bobster at some stage. Do girls really like Lulo Café’s music or the man himself, there was such a lod scraming when he got onto the stage even before he played. For me he’s not the best DJ in town there is room for improvement. Deep house has its people I guess and the time.

The highlight star of the night was apperantly Nichola the international DJ. I guess the SA market is better in House than USA and Nochola proved that. He killed the crowd with soothing deep and tribal commercial mixes. He really lived up to expectation. Oh boy when his sexy dancer took on the stage everyone went crazy, the lady can dance.

23

X onga solveki. This should be highly relevant as Students are about solving X’s and the likes. Character took on the stage with his dancers the song X was like a storm. Of course most people are not familiar with his songs, that’s when his brother Professor had to take over as always he murdered the crowd especially with ubaniongniga lento, petty speedy was not there. Oh I always wondered where T’zozo was until I spotted him in the VIP section, next thing he was on stage. He pleased the crowd as he could but this are not pakishani times. Dr Malinga came to rescue T’zozo. Damn Dr Malinga has a lot of energy. He dances better thab most men his age. The Carsanova track is nicer when he performs it live. DJ Franky is from the same school as Euphonic and the likes. They are a group of DJs that can play, produce and mix. He did it very well, took the crowd of by storm. I guess playing commercial will always please the crowd. When he got to the electro part that’s when it was clear he can mix. A.K.A is the beast is a problem, like literally. Sho AKA is a good performer and great artist but with the attitude he put at the Wits Freshers no. I mean saying the F word after every second sentence no. They boy has some energy for sho. He woke everyone up as it was already past 01h00 when he came on. It was Tira up for closing. Is there a Tira without BiGNuz, partially. He prooved that through playing most of their songs. Tira is different in that he has a 50/50 ratio of performing and playing. As to weather he’s good for a closing Act I don’t know.
