End of Iron Man? By Asad nizami
I
n the latest installment of the critically acclaimed and highly c o v e t e d superhero series, Tony Stark played by Robert Downey Jr. returns as Iron Man for the fourth time. After saving New York from an alien attack and an imminent atom bomb explosion in ‘The Avengers’ (2012), Tony is seen as a secluded insomniac in the beginning of Iron Man 3, focusing solely on building an army of iron suits. Tony faces his most dangerous nemesis, ‘The Mandarin’ played by Sir Ben Kingsly, in the latest installment of the series. The story focuses around The Mandarin plotting several mysterious terrorist attacks then boasting about them by hijacking the American Media. Tony is pulled into the Mandarin’s elaborate scheme when friend and former body guard Hapy Hogan played by Jon Favreau is severely injured in one of the attacks. After he conveys a direct threat to the Mandarin, Tony’s Malibu mansion, housing his newest suits, is attacked and he is believed to be dead. The movie progresses in a unique way, mostly due to the new directorial approach. The first two movies were directed by Jon Favreau who had a

particular style of depicting the iron superhero, portraying his brilliance and narcissistic attitude as his biggest assets. Shane Black who is most famous for movies such as ‘Lethal Weapon’ and ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ was invited to direct Iron Man 3. Instead of coming up with a new storyline, Black uses the incidents of New York in The Avengers as a cause of Tony’s insomnia and anxiety attacks and portrays Tony as being weaker than he is made out to be in the two prequels. The movie has several gaps in the plot as well where links between different scenes are made in an
instantaneous manner and might be confusing for the audience. All of that doesn’t really matter however because, apart from having the best special effects amongst any of the Iron Man movies, just the fact that there are over 40 suits to see in the movie is quite a treat for any action movie enthusiast. The latest of all of Tony’s suits, ‘The Mach 42’ is perhaps the most exciting as Tony is able to mentally control and summon the suit anywhere he chooses. The movie includes excellent performances by Sir Ben Kinglsy who almost outshines Robert Downey Jr. Although the Iron Man series after this installment has taken a different approach in terms of Tony Stark’s character development, there are still elements such as the sheer brilliance of the technology in the movie and the constant humor superbly provided of by Robert Downey Jr. However, the question now is after having introduced Iron Man’s biggest rival, what will future movies contain? More importantly, could this be the end of Iron Man as a single entity detached from the Avengers?

He has appreciated the poetic fecundity of the poet that is rooted in his avowed concern for perfection. It is the latest collection of Sabir Zafar’s ghazal (80) but with an experimentative difference inasmuch as all of these are patterned on the rhyming scheme employed by Sheikh Syed Usman Marwandi aka Lal Shahbaz Qalandar (RA) in his widely celebrated mystical ghazal opening with the couplet: Namee danam k akhir chuN dam-e deedar mee raqsam/ Magar nazam ba-eeN zauq-e k paish-e yar mee raqsam, mee raqsam being its recurrent rhyme. Nasir Abbas Nayyar, an acclaimed Urdu critic, has written an erudite but exhaustive preface to the book highlighting its formalcum-textual import in the light of Sabir Zafar’s poetics that has assumed a new but distinct shape in it.
