Because Your Frozen Yogurt Matters By Marian Sharaf Joseph

A

wareness for the benefits of Probiotics has grown since the introduction of frozen yogurt in our dessert market. It’s believed frozen yogurt is a healthier source of Probiotics because it contains live culture that is good for enhancing digestive systems & boosting immunity. Sometimes, a digestive disorder occurs when the balance of health-friendly bacteria is disturbed due to an infection in the stomach or intestine or due to the intake of strong antibiotics. “When we refer to digestion we mean everything possibly connected to the digestive system. Most of us have experienced an upset tummy when we take antibiotics. It’s not because the antibiotic doesn’t suit a patient, it’s because in the process of killing the infection, the balance of good and bad bacteria is disturbed. This is when Probiotic is required. Plus they help combat flu, allergies and bad breath,” said Dr Mariam Malik, a veteran doctor at a government hospital. Thanks to advertising, a large fraction of us are now clinging onto to frozen yogurts to consume healthy doses of Probiotics. We have been told they are good for expecting mom, kids, the elderly, the athlete et al. In fact it’s good for everyone who is biologically proven

human, n o kidding! However, doing a little homework helps you realize that Probiotics do not help alone. Prebiotic are the essential nondigestible ingredients that support Probiotic. While it is true that frozen yogurt is a great source of Probiotic, it’s not as healthy unless it’s pure dairy. Most frozen yogurts available in the market are powder based, and though it does makes them Probiotic, there are certainly not Prebiotics. In addition, what a lot of Frozen

Yogurt Companies don’t say is that Probiotics have a shelf life. Ganeden Biotech Inc, a registered laboratory for Pre & Probiotics and developer of the superior and advanced Probiotics, Ganeden BC30, assert that healthy bacteria contained in regular Probiotics don’t always make their way into the digestive tract. Although frozen yogurt contains regular Probiotic, the majority of them do not survive long enough for you to reap the rewards. This is especially the case with powder

based frozen yogurt. Unless it is fresh dairy made, it’s a false claim that a frozen yogurt contains a healthy chunk of these friendly bacteria. And with Ganeden BC 30, you can be sure that you are consuming stronger and longer lasting Probiotics. Rabia Zia, CEO Yoglicious, the only Prebiotic & GanedenBC30 Probiotic registered frozen yogurt in Pakistan said, “Powder based frozen yogurt are Probiotic but they are not Prebiotic. Combination of Pre and Probiotic is a must to make healthy fresh frozen yogurt that is genuinely good for the body. Otherwise, you must realize that you are only consuming powdered milk and sugar. Prebiotics help in the growth of healthy bacteria, and that is only possible if it’s made of fresh milk. Pasteurized milk help kill unnecessary bacteria. So, frozen yogurt made of fresh pasteurized milk is safe and full of Pre and Probiotic. As a matter of fact, among the healthy bacteria that are stimulated include lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. They are found in the gut.” Prebiotic are also known to increase resistance to invading pathogens, which are bacteria and virus that cause diseases. Your digestive and metabolic system can be enhanced when you eat frozen yoghurt rich in Prebiotic. In most cases, Prebiotic clears dangerous toxins and other waste elements in our digestive tract. David Williams, product innovator for Yoglicious & Director of Award Winning Plas Farm UK is credited for introducing frozen yogurt across Europe. He said, “Despite being considered a dessert or snack food, frozen yogurt is a good source of calcium. 1/2 cup of frozen yogurt provides 103 mg of calcium. The adult

minimum d a i l y requirement for calcium is 1200 mg. Frozen yogurt can be a valuable source of calcium for individuals who are lactose intolerant. Good frozen yogurts made of pure dairy milk kill excessive fats at source. After all, a small percentage of fat is required for a balanced healthy diet.” Plas Farm is the leading supplier of frozen yogurt to some of the biggest brand names in Europe’s Frozen Yogurt Segments including American & Canadian

Froyos for over 2 decades. Market analysts predict frozen yogurt is likely to take over ice cream. Compared to ice cream, frozen yogurt is low in fat. For those on low fat diet, it’s an enjoyable snack that is low on calories. Lactose in frozen yogurt provides carbohydrate called Complex Carbohydrate, which is an important for generating a sustained form of energy. With a pure dairy product you will never have ‘the water based feeling’ while having a good cup of fro-yo. But a non-dairy frozen yogurt is only a sweetened snack that adds to our weight. In case, you’re wondering if your frozen yogurt is dairy or non dairy; remember pure dairy frozen yogurt is creamier and the taste of its flavor develops slowly, while the sweetness of powder based froyo’s hit your taste buds directly, which is probably what gives the you and your loved ones an unhealthy sugar rush. And now you know!

at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. YOC’A embodies the synergies between different artists, artisans, designers and philosophers to fuel its creative aesthetic; an aesthetic that is manifest in their interiors, furniture, fabric and accessories. The YOC’A showroom is based in Karachi and has become the hub of home interior and architectural activities. This brand is hailed for its understated elegance and classy products encompassing trendy

furniture and home textile. As a couture brand, YOC’A offers an exclusive yet versatile repertoire of furniture, fabrics, lighting and interior consultancy, suitable for both corporate and residential clients. YOC’A’s pieces are on special discount during Ramadan; giving you the chance to take home a piece of luxury created and crafted by the artists at YOC’A themselves. Sarah Najmi Bilgrami of YOC’A speaks to Pakistan Today about the inception of YOC’A and their design philosophy. On what inspired her to be part of this field Sarah: “All three of us have grown up in environments surrounded by art and design. Having studied art and architecture at Rhode Island School of Design and also heading a 30+ year old architectural practice, nurtured our creative instinct and designing furniture came naturally to us. As practicing architects, we were always looking for pieces of furniture, when designing interiors of homes, but found a dearth of furniture in the market that appealed to our sensibilities. We started by designing a few pieces tailored to our projects; realizing that we enjoyed playing with varying scales of design. As our pieces gained appreciation and the demand grew, it fuelled our innate passion for designing just about anything! Moreover, we were very particular about what we wanted for our interiors. It seemed like the most natural progression was to vertically integrate our practice into a complete design house. Our objective was that a client can come to us and get a complete solution; the architecture of their house, its interior and furniture, down

to the napkin ring. It works well because we can absolutely exercise our aesthetic. We carry pieces that are a result of a lot of dialogue; we produce inspired pieces. Often we have been told that our furniture is very different from what is available, so that is what we strive to do here at YOC’A: provide you with a furniture piece that can be part of your heirloom collection.” Colours play a significant role in this brands design aesthetic. “We love to move with the current trends. According to current international trends, home interiors are going green this year. Emerald

is the colour we are most likely to play with this season. Symbolically, emerald brings a sense of clarity,

renewal and rejuvenation. This powerful and universally appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors.” Sarah feels that it is important to consult a professional while redoing one’s space as professional expertise make a world of a difference when handling a project. “We are extremely excited to see that today’s clientele appreciates diversity in aesthetics and more people are aware of the need for design guidance. Pakistani people definitely take pride in their homes and they are re-defining their lifestyle constantly with the guidance of interiors. We have helped a lot of clients redefine their spaces entirely, ranging from bridal suites to chic lofts and large exotic homes. People sometimes approach designers with preconceived notions of design but it is the designer’s responsibility to guide them. We bring our extensive research and adapt it to each client’s lifestyle!” Sarah shares with us some recurring mistakes that people make when it comes to interiors. “One of the gravest mistakes that we have noticed is that sometimes interior designers demolish structure without consulting an architect or structural engineer - one should be

extremely cautious when altering a structure, especially in places where original drawings are scarce.” “Some of the other mistakes are easily redeemable: One being the misuse of colour and maybe trying to have too much in a single space with disregard to tonality, textures and the fact it is a home and not a studio. We believe colour has to be respected and used intelligently without overkill. Another pet peeve for us is for example the mixing of two very different sensibilities which should be developed independently. For instance, when someone creates a Spanish villa with a Zen feature! That is another lifestyle faux pas!” With so much creativity under her belt, we inquire what else it is that interests Sarah in life. “Apart from architecture and interior design, I have always been interested in fashion. I have a strong sense of

what I like in fashion and love to keep abreast with trends. I think the two are interrelated as you drape your silhouette with the same care that is given to your space. I think of all the fields the two are mutually dependent as they are an extension of one’s style. We have been associated with the fashion industry in the past. Our recent association has been with the PFDC L’Oreal Bridal Week in 2012 where we designed and provided pieces for the L’Oreal Paris lounge.” Future plans include, “Expansion! YOC’A furniture will be available in Dubai at The Designers store from next month. We will also be stocking online in the near future. We also have some exciting shows coming up for 2013-2014 and more will be unraveled on that front in the beginning of next year.”
