Interview

Juggun Kazim:

Can one woman do it all? By Sumeha Khalid

I

t hasn’t been long since this pretty young woman waltzed into the limelight and stole all hearts with her innocent looks. Later, she strengthened her place in our hearts through her acting abilities. Juggun Kazim had been pursuing a career in modelling and acting in Canada for the last few years before returning to Pakistan. Once in her hometown, Lahore, the girl was inundated with acting and hosting offers and before we knew it, Juggun was a sensation. Although a renowned actor-host, Juggun likes to be known as a mother before anything else. More than anything else, she prefers to watch a good movie

12 I October 24 - 30, 2010

while cuddling up with her son. Pakistan Today caught up with the spunky gal recently for a quick Q&A session. Pakistan Today: What’s the latest in your life? Juggun Kazim: I am working for a serial and two movies, one with Shan and the other with Humayun Saeed. I am also hosting a show on Aag TV called ‘VIPs Only’ and a talk show on PTV called ‘Honestly Speaking with Juggun Kazim’. I also recently got back from filming a commercial for Garnier in Prague. PT: You’ve been involved in a film. How did it come about? JK: I was signed on by my agency, Newton Landry Management, while I was in Canada. The producer of the film had seen me in a stage production called

I am setting up a shelter for abused women and children and after that, if I have some time left, I will open a restaurant ‘Tara’, where I played the lead character. He requested my agent Yanick Landry for my audition. So I went and auditioned for the film and surprisingly after just the first audition I was signed on for ‘Pink Ludoos’. PT: What was the experience like? Was it very different from television? JK: Of course, film is a totally different medium from TV as is working in Canada versus working in Pakistan. Films have huge budgets and there is zero margin for error. Everything must be perfect from acting to direction to production to even make-up. My

medium of choice would of course be film but then there are barely enough movies being made in Pakistan. PT: Let’s quickly rewind to the early days of your life and how you came to be a part of show business. JK: Acting has always been my passion and to a certain extent an obsession. Acting was something I always wanted to do. My first commercial play was at age 14.The director was my best friend, Mashal Peerzada. It was one of the most enjoyable theatre projects I have worked on till date. I started my professional acting and modelling career under the name ‘Jay Kazim’ in Toronto. I was approached by Sutherland Models in Canada to come on board as a ‘petite’ and ‘commercial’ model. I did two music videos with them and was then approached by my current Canadian agents. Sandie Newton and Yanick Landry took me under their wings and started sending me to auditions. I ended up doing a Diet Coke advertisement which ran for two seasons because it was so popular. I did a few more commercials and some theatre work. I auditioned for a lead role in a movie. Never in my wildest dreams had I imagined that I would be chosen as the lead in the movie but Allah was very kind to me. PT: What were you doing before you took up show business as a profession? JK: Before I started my professional acting and modelling career, I was a marketing officer at a real estate finance company. I also worked as a sales and marketing coordinator at a technology company; both in Canada. PT: Ever gave modelling a serious thought? JK: I have never really considered myself to be a model. However, I am the brand ambassador for Garnier, and have recently done brand campaigns for Crystallia and Nishat Linen (winter collection).

PT: How did the transition from actor to host take place, and which of the two do you prefer? JK: I am essentially an actress and I enjoy hosting. Hosting is something I just fell into while I was pregnant and now I have to say I love acting and hosting equally. I host predominantly to change people’s narrow minded perception of the media industry and to promote a positive social change. PT: How do you manage to strike a balance between personal and professional life especially since you are a mother? JK: Becoming a mother is the best thing that ever happened to me. Hamza and I have a great relationship. It is a juggling act to make sure that he gets enough time and attention but we manage well. The time we have together is quality time. He is a lovely young person with great energy. I am blessed to have him in my life. I keep my priorities straight. If it is a choice between a million dollar project and my son’s sports day, I will attend the sports day. PT: Any plans of remarrying? JK: Marriage is a beautiful relationship but a truly sensitive one. It takes a lot of hard work and time. Currently my attention is totally focused on my son, the causes I support and my career, so at this moment there are no plans for remarriage.

PT: What are your future plans? JK: Definitely more films. I’m also working on setting up my own production house. I am in talks with two parties in India, one for a talk show they would like me to host and one is a film. Let’s see what happens with that. My agents in Canada want me to return. I think I’ll wait on that a while. I am setting up a shelter for abused women and children and after that, if I have some time left, I will open up a restaurant.

ahore is considered to be the epicentre of art and culture in Pakistan. It is replete with historical buildings, gardens, mosques and the like. Amongst the countless mementos of our rich distant and near past is a small house built in relatively recent times which has acquired a status of its own: Shakir Ali Museum is one of those rare buildings in this country which have been preserved and well looked after. It also serves the purpose of encouraging art and artists, especially budding ones. Shakir Ali, an artist of great repute, studied classic and wood art in Bombay and London and returned to teach art at the Mayo School of Arts, Lahore - now better known as the National College of Arts. In his lifetime he was acknowledged as a contemporary master internationally. The Pakistan government too recognised him as such, and he was bestowed with the Sitara-e-Imtiaz and also the Pride of Performance. He was a pioneer in modern art and an inspiration for the budding artists of that time. He built a house for his personal residence, but unfortunately was able to live in it for only a short while before he passed away. Designed by Nayyer Ali Dada, this picturesque house is built with burnt brick finish. It has interesting access to the roof and terrace from the outside as well as from inside. Built on the inside in split level it

has a unique feature of a circular staircase arising from the main living area. The interior reflects the simple and tasteful lifestyle of Shakir. The black wooden Swati furniture, some of which was designed by his students, as well as the red floors and the stark white walls give it a dramatic look. Only some of his paintings and sketches are on display as most of his work was sold in his lifetime. Personal photographs hanging on the walls give an insight to his personal life and the friends he had. Also to be seen in the photographs is Faiz Ahmed Faiz and other notable personalities. The charming garden with stone and wood benches and the brick walls providing circular seating lends itself well to the musical evenings that are now held there. Taken over by the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), it was formally opened as a Museum and Art Gallery in 1976. The PNCA has successfully not only maintained this building but has also encouraged and promoted activities in it. The Art Gallery, located in the lower ground floor, has housed many art exhibitions. Equipped now with the latest lighting facilities, it provides a great opportunity to not only view the art on October 24 - 30, 2010 I 15

display but also enjoy the paintings of the great master and absorb the atmosphere that Shakir Ali Museum provides. The museum is often visited by school children and tourists who are charmed by this fascinating house tucked away in the centre of a residential area of Lahore. Organised by the PNCA, another well known artist, Kohari, who now resides in France, spent many months here and held art workshops which were well attended by art enthusiasts. The PNCA also regularly holds musical evenings here referred to as baithaks. Recently Ustad Hamid Ali Khan enthralled the audience when he sang ghazals for a fund-raiser for the flood victims. Not only renowned artists are invited to perform but also budding talent is discovered and given an opportunity and a platform to show their prowess. People who knew Shakir Ali well say that he loved having art lovers, artists and students around him and was at his happiest when he encouraged them. It is heartening to know that his house is being used for the purpose that he would have appreciated - a well deserved tribute to a great artist. October 24 - 30, 2010 I 17

The grandson of the national painter of Pakistan, Ustad Haji Mohammad Sharif, Mansoor, apart from being an artist, is also a painter, author and educationist of art. The exhibition was inaugurated by the Minister of Culture, Punjab, Dr Tanveer Ul Islam. Mansoor’s art is an enigmatic portrayal of the culture and political mayhem in Pakistan. By Beenish Mahmood combining the traditional element with a modern vision. Mansoor depicts the social and political situation in a manner that is stark yet in no way unreal. ‘The Mask’ is a reflection of the false identities we are all carrying with us. It is a reference to the façade we are all wearing. Similarly his other paintings such as the ‘Unloveable Soul’ and ‘Goodbye Shehzadi’ tell the sad story of Benazir Bhutto’s murder. The miniature piece ‘Data Darbar’ is a unique portrayal of the suicide bombing that claimed several lives at the shrine. He painted scattered shoes with drops of blood on them to portray the sad incident.

‘Possession’ - a splendid romance By Beenish Mahmood

‘P

ossession’ by AS Byatt published in 1990 in Britain won the Man Booker prize and remains one of the bestsellers from the year 1990 to 2005. The novel is a fusion of the historical past and contemporary present. A story of love and passion as the novel’s subtitle ‘A Romance’ implies, it provides a literary example of several romantic relationships that make us stop and think about our own vision of the perfect romance. Woven with colourful prose, rich literary allusions and potent sensuality, ‘Possession’ is a portrayal of curiosity of knowledge that consequents in an ardent relationship. The meta-textual layers of the novel testify to Byatt’s novel being a post modern double coded text: it is both the imitation of the romance and Victorian poetry as well as their critical reconsideration and reappraisal from the perspective of contemporary text. The plot of the novel describes the pursuit of a couple of late 20th century regarding a passionate love affair between two fictional Victorian poets, Randolph Henry Ash and Christabel Lamotte. In its quest for unveiling the ‘love story’ of the two dead poets, the novel forms the shape of a maze through which both the characters of the novel as well as the readers have to follow the clues and find the path to the ultimate end of the story. 20 I October 24 - 30, 2010

Possession describes the beautiful emotion of love in a manner that is subtle and discreet yet in no manner incomplete Roland Mitchell is a boring and uninspiring post PHD who does not have a proper job. He accidentally comes across a letter in Ash’s Vico and it is this discovery that serves as the turning point in his life. The patrician Maud on the other hand is tall, beautiful, elegant and successful. She runs the women resource center at Lincoln University. She is an expert on La Motte while Roland is one on Ash. Roland and Maud, though apparently possessing vast differences, can connect to one another at the human level. As humans they have similar emotional needs and this serves as a foundation for their relationship. Maud and Roland become involved in the quest for knowledge on Lamotte and Ash. Both are equally inquisitive and literally obsessed with finding the truth. As their academic findings take direction, they too begin to fall in love. ‘Possession’ describes the beautiful emotion of love in a manner that is subtle and discreet yet in no manner incomplete. There are no sexual undertones to Roland and Maud’s relationships. Byatt allows things to take their natural course and that is what makes the book a remarkable bestseller. Through their relationship, Byatt demonstrates that this is one way of falling in love and building a relationship which ultimately is consummated. Love need not always commence from intense passions and raging hormones. Neither does love need to end an individual’s autonomy. Roland and Maud’s relationship proceeds in an entirely asexual manner. In their modern world the relationship seems prudish. Yet Byatt shows two individuals who tried

Book Title: Possession Publisher: New York Vintage Books Pages: 576 the modern way of love but found it unsatisfactory and lacking. Though their relationship is consummated at the end, yet this does not happen because Byatt is following a formula of writing a typical romance. The consummation of their relationship seems a natural and logical consequence of their romance and it occurs only after they are comfortable with each other. The scent of making love is strongly associated with triumph and a hope of a new beginning. Theirs is a love that is unconventional and seemingly outdated in the modern world yet that is exactly what lends it vitality and strength.

renowned Urdu novelist, late Qurratulain Haider, is an icon in the history of Urdu literature. Her famous Urdu novel ‘Aag Ka Darya’, now available in English, namely ‘River of Fire’, is a brilliant attempt at the recollection of the memories of bloodshed and violence perpetrated at the time of the partition of the subcontinent. Haider presents 2,500 years of the history of the civilisation of the Indian sub-continent on the vast canvas of her novel. Her book is a beautiful portrayal of the diversity of cultures, history, religions and civilisations. ‘River of Fire’ presents these themes of rich socio-cultural heritage through the use of different literary and stylistic techniques which not only gives an intellectual edge to Haider’s writing but also add to the complexity of her work. The novel opens with the beautiful metaphor of a ‘beerbahuti’ that shares a similarity with human life. The ‘beerbahuti’ is a reflection of the solitary existence of man in the larger expanse of the universe. Haider’s descriptive power captivates the reader and the novel takes on an air of mystery and curiosity right from the start. Through its focus on the intricacies of life and delicate strands that weave relationships, the author

is able to recapture the historical events with a perspective that is personalised, fictional and factual at the same time. Written in 1959 and later trans-created into ‘River of Fire’, the novel is regarded as one of the classics of Urdu literature and is her magnum opus. A compelling account of the history of the subcontinent, Haider is able to include the vast span of time within the limited space of the pages of the book. An eclectic blend of fiction and reality, the novel takes on an endearing quality that immortalises the brutal events in the hearts of the later generations. The novel looks into a multitude of perspectives and angles. However, the obscurity of the subjects and the constant shift in focus makes it a difficult read. Nonetheless it is a novel that is worth reading and experiencing. The author has managed to leave a strong imprint on the minds of the readers who are forced to sit back and reflect on the enormous sacrifices made by their forefathers. For her ability to revive the past in the hearts of the present generation with the same intensity of emotions, the reader is indebted to Haider. The book serves as an eye-opener and is an excellent portrayal of the drama rendered by the human element in times of chaos and upheaval. Beenish Mahmood

Music

For all Noori lovers

By Beenish Mahmood

N

oori, after the launch of its debut album, ‘Suno ke Mai Hoon Jawan’, has now come back with yet another rocking performance. ‘Jhoom Lay’, the Cornetto song, has finally been released with a video to go along. Composed by Noori in collaboration with noted music director Shuja Haider with the lyrics having been penned by Mr Irfan Khan, who is the executive creative director for Lowe and Rauf, the song is a real treat for all Noori fans. Expecting it to be a Cornetto advertisement with the ice-cream jacketing the screen, one is pleasantly surprised to see a theme and a concept that whilst promoting the product, at the same time

22 I October 24 - 30, 2010

is able to retain its own identity. The plot of the video revolves around two brothers, Ali Hamza and Ali Noor, who are basically portraying two different flavours of Walls Cornetto ice-cream. While Noor is the serious adult, it is Hamza who is the carefree and funloving individual. The concept explored is not unique but the way it has been presented is definitely eye-catching. The song emits a lot of positive energy. The poetry is beautiful, full of the delirium of joy and happiness. The lyrics are recollecting the past happy moments that the brothers shared. It brings them a joy and bliss that is uncontainable. The chorus depicts this energy and exuberance with an exactitude that is superb. Jhoom lay jhoomey zameen aasman Gaai man gaai yeh saara jahan Tu hai kahan Thematically the song is about love and the power it holds. Love is an ardent passion that will ultimately overcome all obstacles and arrogance. The theme of falling in love has however this time been reversed. To find out what happens next log onto www.nooriworld.

‘Jhoom Lay’ is an eclectic blend of different genres of music, mainly art and traditional music

net Aha! Feeling inquisitive are you? Wink. So then pick up the song now! Before it’s too late! The quality of Noori’s songs is that they are not classified under a particular genre. ‘Jhoom Lay’ too is an eclectic blend of different genres of music, mainly art and traditional music. In other words it’s a selfstyled pop act. However, there have been several raised eyebrows at whether in becoming Walls brand ambassador, Noori too is moving towards commercialism. I don’t agree. Maybe because this writer is a Noori lover or simply because Noori succeeds in balancing the scale between individualism and commercialism. For all Noori lovers, this song is definitely in for a huge applause from you. So, don’t miss it!

Get your dream abs now! You can do these exercises at home or in the gym for getting your dream abs in a short time. People with back problems should refrain from doing tough or advanced abs exercises.

By Talha Majeed Khan Modified Bicycle 1. Lie on your back while keeping your knees bent. Place your hands behind your head to support your neck. 2. Tighten your abs and lift your shoulder blades off the floor. Then rotate the left shoulder to the right, keeping the elbow in a fixed position. 3. At the same time, slide the left heel out until the knee is straight or slightly bent, concentrating on the right side of the waist. 4. Bring the left heel back inwards, and slide the right heel outwards as you rotate the right shoulder towards the left side, squeezing the left side of the waist. 5. During this exercise, do not let your elbow move forward. Rotate your entire torso. 6. Do three sets of 8-12 reps or as many as you can easily manage. Abs

Reverse crunch 1. Lie on the floor and place your hands behind your head. 2. Bring your knees towards your chest until they’re bent to a 90 degree angle, with your feet together or crossed. 3. Curl your hips towards the ceiling by lifting your hips just a few inches off the ground. It’s a very small movement, so try to use your abs to lift your hips rather than swinging your legs and creating a momentum. 4. Lower and repeat for three sets of 10-12 reps or as many as you can comfortably do.

1. Lie on a mat and place both hands next to your ears. Do not press on the ears or your head, so that you do not strain your neck while doing the exercise. 2. Tighten your abs and lift your shoulder blades off the floor as if you are pushing your shoulders towards the ceiling. 3. Bring your shoulders back to the starting position. Do not pull at your neck or head to complete the motion. Another slightly more difficult version of this exercise can be done by extending your arms straight behind your head. 4. Repeat for three sets of 10-20 reps.

Plank on elbows and toes 1. Lie facing down on a mat, resting on the forearms with your palms flat on the floor. 2. Push off the floor, raising your body up onto your toes and resting on the elbows. It will be like a push up position on elbows. You can also extend your arms and make a perfect push up position. Choose whatever is more comfortable. 3. Keep your back flat, and in a straight line from head to heels. 4. Tighten your abdominals and do not let your lower body stick up in the air or sag in the middle. 5. Count up to 20 and rest. Repeat three times.

Curves

Women envy them, men adore them

H

ave you ever looked at a fashion magazine, at those 5 feet 11 inch, super-skinny, olive-toned models flaunting those gorgeous designer clothes, and thought, “If only I were thinner…”? If the answer is yes, then you need to… not watch your weight or opt for a strict diet regime but reassess what is beautiful and healthy and what would be classified as ‘anorexic’. Yes girls, curves are the sure way to go. If you think you are too busty or your hips a similar size, then rethink. You may have the much-coveted ideal hourglass figure. Women envy it, men adore it. Cosmopolitan’s former editor Leah Hardy, while talking about the abundance of skinny imagery in the media, says that the reason one sees ‘toothpick’ like models all over fashion magazines and runways is that “agencies refuse to hire larger models because they can’t fit in sample sizes, which are made by men (most of the designers are men). If you ask the designers, they’ll claim the samples have to be small because the fabric is expensive.” Behind this façade, the fashion world tells women to strive to look like women who actually do not exist, who are not real. Former Marie Claire editor Liz Jones agrees to this conclusion, adding that “designers want you to believe that you are not beautiful enough or young enough or thin enough, and they do that by draping cadaverous 16-year-olds across double-page spreads so you feel wretched.” But do you really think that Jennifer Lopez, or Beyonce or Aishwarya Rai or Kim Karadishan have full figures, that they have a lot of weight on them? In fact, they are thin with a lot of shape and curves to perfectly enhance their beauty. There’s no denying that Megan Fox, Heidi Clum or Marisa Miller appeal to men; after all one or the other of them has been voted the sexiest woman across the planet. But there’s also no denying that the idolised hourglass figure does set off an urge in the brains of men, who happen to be the largest group of female admirers on the planet. Not only that, today’s clothing trends, with flowy gowns, pleated frocks, baggy shirts, its all about looking plumper and curvaceous. And those who are naturally bestowed with a plump around their hips or bust should start counting themselves lucky because they have what it takes to woo a man’s heart and mind. And what with countries such as Italy, Spain and France passing legislation to ban the promotion of extreme thinness on runways, internet other forums of media, and popular reality shows like ‘America’s Next Top Model’ giving plus size models a chance to flaunt their bodies, do you think starving yourself to anorexia is worth it. Definitely not. So starve yourself no more, flaunt what you got there. Let Pink’s ‘Stupid Girl’ be your antidote-anthem against those tall, skinny ‘toothpicks’ whose only great achievement is un-chipped nail polish and whose only aspiration is to get photographed in a different outfit nine times a day. Remember, all real women have curves.

Cuisine

Quest for the perfect dessert! By Injila Baqir Zeeshan

T

hose of us who like to indulge in sweet treats, realise the effort that goes into the making of the perfect dessert. It is nothing short of an art, and a dessert which falls below one’s expectation, simply ruins the evening. Desserts, especially chocolate ones, have to be flawless. And once you have tasted the best, you can never settle for less. Chocolate brownies and cupcakes, for example, are brilliant in London. They don’t taste better anywhere else, not even a mile up north of London. As far as my hometown is concerned, I would completely blame my decade long unresolved weight issues on Lahore’s desserts! First there was nothing; just some pink faced, dolled up sticky and hard pastries. That was when I used to be slim. Then came the revolution of fresh cream, bringing us Black Forest. But the real breakthrough had to be bakeries like Kitchen Cuisine, especially the chocolate desserts, which took the sweets to a whole new platform. Desserts, acquired an entirely new life! The following list has been prepared in consultation with other likeminded individuals who have a sweet tooth, and believe in ensuring their dessert is prepared with a lot of love and that extra special touch!

1- Hot Spot (Defence and Gaddafi Stadium)

Top of my current favourite dessert list has to be the Nutella Brownie at Hot Spot. It is the regular brownie, which comes topped with Nutella, whipped cream and a very generous sprinkle

38 I October 24 - 30, 2010

of roasted almonds. I tell you it’s divine! The touch of hazelnuts in Nutella topping, make the chocolate taste perfect! There has to be a reason why Nutella outsells all other brands combined with peanut butter brands in 75 countries. Whether it’s a waffle or a crepe, in most parts of the world I have travelled to, they would spread Nutella as topping. I am beginning to believe they should send me a lifetime free supply, for as much free marketing as I have done for them and also appoint me their official spokesperson, but we are really getting sidetracked here, so let’s move onto our second pick of desserts.

2- Espresso (Mehmud Kasoori Road – a little further ahead of CTC)

The bread pudding is hot, perfectly combined with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and simply yummy. But my pick has to be the Mars Cheesecake here. It’s cheesecake with added bits from a Mars bar. The crunchy biscuit base is smooth, which does not get torn to bits while you munch away at the cake.

5- Gowalmandi (Not a place I can give directions for)

For Kheer/Firni lovers, and all you thoothi– crazed fans, if you already don’t know, you have to seek out Haji Sahib’s shop in Gawalmandi. And voila! You have found the best thootian ever.

6- Masoom’s ( Al-Hafiz Tower, opposite Pizza Hut on M.M Alam Road

New York Cheese Cake is what Masoom’s is famous for, but its Malt Chocolate Cake and Vanilla Crunch are must tries as well. I adored their hazelnut and walnut brownies, but sadly I must report that the standards have fallen recently.

7- Soan Papri (Alfatah, Jalal Sons to name a couple of stores)

This is Haldiraam’s masterpiece. Take a bite and feel heaven melt into your mouth. Do not confuse it with Soan Cake, which may look more tempting. Resist and remember that looks can be deceiving!

8- Kitchen Cuisine (All over town)

Their chocolate has a homely touch to it. It comes very close to to the kind of chocolate cake I end up baking at home. It is almost as good (since my home baked cake happens to be quite popular). Their layer cups and mousse is also not half bad.

3- Movenpick (Nandos & Café Zouk, both MM Alam Road)

Although I’m a chocoholic, and truly appreciate Swiss Chocolate falvour from Movenpick which has to be my favourite brand of ice cream in the world, Movenpick’s strawberry is out of this world. At Nandos they top it with an equally delicious whipped cream, which has to be the best whipped cream in town.

4- Tiramisu (Off Main Boulevard, opposite Home Economics College)

Molten Chocolate Lava Cake will make your taste buds dance to its tunes. Dig into it to make the molten chocolate f low out of the tiny cake hill, onto your plate. Your perfect bite must include a bit of the cake, and some lava, completed with vanilla ice cream.

9- Cosa Nostra (Off Main Boulevard, next to Home Economics College)

All Berry Frozen Yoghurt and Tiramisu Gelato are bearable. Their saving grace is their creaminess and smoothness.

10- Nirala (All over town)

Gulab Jamun taste best when cooked at home, but Nirala is not too bad ether. Their Rasgullay are very good but the Motichoor Laddoo doesn’t taste better anywhere else, and you must trust me on this one as this comes from a real food connoisseur.

Celebrity Couples & Compatibility Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise

This is a good week for counseling from a physical or mental health practitioner. Morning time is your best time to make progress. You will have some brilliant new ideas, but it may be too soon to implement them. The emphasis will shift to distant affairs, religion, and education. Postpone your unnecessary journeys to avoid unhappy events. Till the end of this week you are on the right track. You may be receiving an invitation to a party or a special event.

The magician card Sep 24 - Oct 23 A jealous colleague might try harming your reputation. Your determination would set an example for others to follow. Seeking the best real estate deal in the market would be worthwhile. You would be appreciated for your ability to act swiftly during the need of the hour. Friends help you out in sorting personal problems. Spiritual person gives blessings and good wishes. Be careful, especially before signing documents. The best day of the week is Saturday.

INTISHAR/SCORPIO The confusion card Oct 24 - Nov 22 This week your accomplishments are likely to exceed your expectations when your problem-solving abilities are super keen. Luck is with you regarding job interests. It’s a good time to make important phone calls and reach agreements with others. Be sure to exercise your initiative. Travel is happily accented. Work hard for your success but don’t overtire yourself this week. You should avoid making changes that unsettle your affairs.

Tom Cruise July 3, 1962 Syracuse, New York 3:06 pm Sun Sign: Cancer Moon Sign: Leo The two of them are quite different. Whereas Katie tends to be idealistic, and somewhat impersonal or philosophical about personal issues, Tom is very emotional, sympathetic, and apt to get totally enmeshed in personal problems. Katie is often humorous or blasé and even seemingly indifferent to the things which matter so much to Tom. Katie is bluntly honest, and this can wound Tom deeply. Another difference between them is that Tom cherishes the past, while Katie often has very little interest in reminiscing or dwelling on what has happened in the past. Katie is more future-oriented, and also more of a gambler or risk-taker. Although they may have a lot to offer one another, it is unlikely that spending a great deal of time together would work out well. They are best for each other in small doses.

October 24 - 30, 2010 I 49

Dear AA, My fiancé was a schizophrenic until she started medication and took proper treatment. By the grace of God, she is cured now but has to be on medication for the rest of her life. The problem is, should I tell my parents about her or should I keep it a secret for the rest of my life? I don’t know how my family will react to this news and I cannot leave my fiancé as I love her a lot. Lost Dear Lost, In this case you first need to sit and see how strong you are yourself. Do you think you are strong enough to keep it a secret from your family and support her throughout your life? If you have that strength and sensibility then you may do without telling your family but if you feel you are not that strong, then you must take your family in confidence and tell them the whole situation very clearly and assure them that it’s not a problem for you; you are ready to handle any situation and all you need is their support. This might appear a bit difficult but in the long run, it will help you a lot or else you will remain under constant fear of hiding it from your family. Secondly, right now you are thinking only emotionally and cannot see the bigger picture as to what would be the consequences once you get married to her. As you know very well, you need to be very careful in such cases because your fiancé will need your support. So I will advise you to first sit and think about the situation. Clear all issues related to it and think how you will deal with them in the future. Then decide if you want to tell your parents about it. And believe me, they will support you as it’s very generous of you to stay by her side. Dear AA, I am living with my in-laws for the last ten years but now I feel it is time for me, my child and my husband to move out. My child is getting older hence privacy is required. My husband has promised me a separate house of our own but my mother-in-law doesn’t want us to move from their place. She cannot bear the thought of parting with her only son. What should I do? For the proper growth of my child and peace of mind for me, I want to have my own house and now my husband is stuck between his mother and his wife. Caught in conflict

50 I October 24 - 30, 2010

Dear Caught, It’s a typical problem that many women in our society face. However, the good part is that it is not an issue that cannot be resolved; but a lot of patience and understanding is required. What you need to do in this situation is to first put your self in your husband’s place and then think. Then put yourself in your mother-in-law’s shoes and try to comprehend her feelings. This will give you a better understanding of the whole picture and you will be able to come up with a better way of communicating with both your husband and with your mother-in-law. Secondly, during this process, develop an amiable rapport with both of them and give them the confidence that you are their friend and understand their needs and points of view. Once you get their confidence, then it will be very easy for you to communicate your needs to them and they will be able to understand it as well. Always remember that it’s all about give and take. Dear AA, I love my husband but there is one problem - he spends a lot on himself but when it comes to household expenditure, he becomes stingy. What should I do? Unbalanced equation Dear Unbalanced, Over here, you need to understand that such behaviour is in his nature and he cannot help it. It’s a common problem with many people and being a numerologist, I can understand why people act like this. I am sure he loves you and his children but this habit is not in his control. You can either get his numerological analysis done and by either changing the spellings of his name or wearing a stone, you can resolve this problem. Secondly, you can start communicating your needs to him and try to make him realise his responsibilities towards his family. Every night, before going to bed, close your eyes and make a clear picture of your husband spending on you and your children; imagine this scene for at least two to three minutes and make this picture very real. This technique, if done consistently for a month can also bring changes in his behaviour. Best of luck.
