SING, HOSANNA! LSO SING

LSO Sing is the London Symphony Orchestra’s singing programme devised by LSO Choral Director, Simon Halsey, with a mission to get everyone in the City singing. He has enjoyed a long-standing musical partnership with Sir Simon Rattle, having worked with him at the Berlin Philharmonic preparing choirs there for the great choral classics, and now does the same thing for the LSO and its Chorus. 2015 starts with a choral rarity that Rattle has championed and performed the world over, though never before in London: Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri. A hot Barbican ticket. At LSO St Luke’s revel in the mellifluous flowing lines of Duruflé’s moving Requiem inspired by Gregorian plainchant at an LSO Singing Day on 7 February (see page 6), when Simon Halsey is sure to reveal fresh insights, offer tips on singing, and a chance to get to know the music from the inside out. Friends and family are welcome to get a ticket to a final run-through at the end of day. lso.co.uk/lsosing LSO Sing is generously supported by the John S Cohen Foundation, the J Paul Getty Jnr Charitable Trust and the Sir Siegmund Warburg’s Voluntary Settlement.

GUESTS

Schumann Das Paradies und die Peri Sir Simon Rattle conductor London Symphony Chorus Simon Halsey chorus director A superb line-up of soloists joins the London Symphony Chorus and LSO under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle in Schumann’s 1843 oratorio. Based on a story taken from Persian mythology, and reflecting the 19th-century craze for all things oriental, it tells how the Peri, a legendary creature, was expelled from paradise and only redeems herself by offering the gift most dear to heaven – a tear from the cheek of a repentant sinner. Tickets from £10 + booking fee (£3 online, £4 by phone) Tue 20 Jan 2.30–5.30pm LSO DISCOVERY

OPEN REHEARSAL Robin Ticcitati conductor Simon Trpcˇeski piano Conductor Robin Ticciati puts the Orchestra through their paces ahead of their Barbican concert together on 25 Jan, rehearsing Toshio Hosokawa’s Blossoming II and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G with soloist Simon Trpcˇeski. Tickets

GUILDHALL PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE Brian Ferneyhough Fanfare for Klaus Huber Steve Reich Music for Pieces of Wood Helmut Lachenmann Guero Kagel Rrrrrrr… Guildhall Percussion Ensemble Part of the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s Total Immersion: Percussion! day, this dynamic programme includes Steve Reich’s Music for Pieces of Wood (1973), born from a desire to make music with the simplest possible means, and Brian Ferneyhough’s tiny but striking tribute to his teacher, Klaus Huber. Lachenmann and Kagel’s works are blissfully subversive: in Guero, the piano keyboard itself becomes a bizarre, un-tuned percussion instrument, whilst Rrrrrrr… confounds all expectation in a theatrical set of duos drawing on everyday sounds. Ticket holders are invited to attend an Introduction to Percussion Ensemble Music from 1.30pm Tickets Promoted by BBC Symphony Orchestra

All events take place in the Jerwood Hall unless otherwise stated. Ticket prices and full booking information on page 20.

THE STEADYING PRESENCE OF BACH BBC RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERTS

One of the most intriguing pleasures of recent BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert series at LSO St Luke’s has been the chance to ask prominent musicians to get together with fellow artists they know and respect, and play chamber music. This time it is the turn of cellist Natalie Clein, a former BBC Young Musician of the Year winner, who has established a firm reputation for herself as a popular soloist – ‘as close as you’ll get to musical champagne’, says BBC Music Magazine – with an inquisitive approach to concert-programming. Here she invites five distinguished colleagues to join her in four concerts of wide-ranging repertoire, from the high Romanticism of Chopin (5 February) to early 20th-century works by Kodály and Ravel (19 February) and more recent compositions by Ligeti and Kurtág (26 February), all linked by the steadying presence of J S Bach. lso.co.uk/lunchtimeconcerts

MATTHEW E WHITE BARBICAN PRESENTS

In 2009 a group of friends got together with the idea to form a record label like the ones they loved from back in the good old days: big arrangements featuring brass and strings, that old-fashioned analogue sound that feels like a big warm hug, all performed by a house band dedicated to good tunes and plenty of heart. So goes the story of Spacebomb Records, which burst onto the scene with the debut album from multi-talented singer-songwriter Matthew E White. Now, after two years of relentless touring all around the world – from Glastonbury to the Sydney Opera House and everywhere in between – he returns with the hotly-anticipated follow-up Fresh Blood, and brings that soulful Spacebomb sound to LSO St Luke’s on 10 March to celebrate the release. This concert forms part of the Barbican Presents series at LSO St Luke’s, which also includes a performance of the electronic opera Miscontinuum from German record producer Jan St Werner, the third entry in his conceptual Fiepblatter series.

A COMPOSER’S COMPOSER BBC RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERTS

Haydn’s reputation as a ‘composer’s composer’ may not do full justice to his music’s warming mixture of ingenuity, humanity and sheer attractiveness, but it accurately reflects the esteem in which he has always been held by his contemporaries and successors. This BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert series presents compositions by him in genres in which he was a seminal figure, and places them alongside works by later composers who also held those genres dear. Beethoven was briefly a pupil of Haydn, and his confident first piano sonata (12 March) is one of three he dedicated to his teacher. Haydn was the earliest master of the piano trio, and one of his superb late trios appears alongside the first of Brahms’ three powerful examples of the form (26 March). It is the string quartet, however, with which Haydn is most closely identified; two of them are paired here with masterpieces from the 20th century’s most searching quartet cycles, by Bartók (5 March) and Shostakovich (19 March). lso.co.uk/lunchtimeconcerts
