LSO Season 2015/16 Autumn/Winter Concert Guide

AUTUMN/WINTER 2015

London’s Symphony Orchestra

The LSO is the capital’s oldest symphony orchestra and one of the world’s finest, with over a century of history behind it and one hundred musicians forming its membership. Each year the LSO joins forces with the world’s leading conductors and soloists to perform 70 concerts at the Barbican Centre. This autumn Valery Gergiev concludes his tenure as Principal Conductor, exploring pivotal ballet scores close to his heart, Bernard Haitink launches the season, and we discover two new works by composers John Adams and Wynton Marsalis. Beyond our home in the City of London the LSO performs a further 70 concerts all over the world every year. Recent tours have taken the Orchestra to all the major European cities and further-flung destinations including the US, Australia, Singapore, India, China and Japan. The LSO’s work extends far beyond the concert hall too. LSO Discovery, our education and community programme which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year, reaches over 60,000 people

And you can hear the Orchestra on over one hundred releases (and counting!) on our own label, LSO Live, and on iconic soundtracks for numerous films (including 2014’s hit The Imitation Game, four of the Harry Potter films and all six original Star Wars movies).

WELCOME / GERGIEV ~ LSO.CO.UK

‘We travel the world to celebrate this incredible Orchestra. Londoners can hear it any time they like.’ Valery Gergiev, LSO Principal Conductor

Man of the Theatre Expect no shortage of drama in Valery Gergiev’s final series as LSO Principal Conductor, with masterpieces from Bartók and Stravinsky. In October Valery Gergiev will bring these composers’ music to life in a way that only a Russian man of the theatre like himself can. As his hands flutter and dance through the air we can expect to find ourselves lost in a world of magic and myth conjured up in four scores for the ballet: from Stravinsky’s earliest masterpieces – The Firebird, The Rite of Spring, Chant du rossignol – through to the terrifying depiction of death and seduction found in Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin. World-renowned pianist Yefim Bronfman joins for Bartók’s Second and Third Piano Concertos, but it’s the Orchestra that takes centre-stage for the finale. In a virtuosic concerto performance of its very own, the LSO waves ‘Vale Valery!’ and brings his nine-year tenure to a close with a bang.

This autumn the LSO explores the length and breadth of America in music, from sea to shining sea. America is often thought of as a cultural melting pot, playing host to an astounding diversity of nationalities, religions and traditions. In no aspect of its cultural life is this remarkable plurality more evident than in its musical language, which embraces anything and everything – from the economy of cool minimalism to the heady excess of hot jazz. The LSO’s musical exploration of America features two new violin concertos by US composers: the UK premiere of John Adams’ ‘dramatic symphony’ for orchestra and violin, Scheherazade.2, and the world premiere of a concerto composed by America’s pre-eminent jazz musician, Wynton Marsalis. The series also features a focus on the music of minimalist pioneer Steve Reich by the LSO Percussion Ensemble and a performance of Dvorˇák’s timeless Symphony No 9 (‘From the New World’), which was inspired by the sounds of Native American music.

AMERICAN CLASSICS / GRAND PIANISTS ~ LSO.CO.UK

Grand Pianists Five of the world’s leading pianists share the stage with the Orchestra in concertos by Mozart, Beethoven, Bartók, Ravel and Chopin.

‘A focused, at times ferocious, pianist who favours a big, steely sound and bold, unsentimental playing.’ New York Times on Hélène Grimaud

One of the world’s leading exponents of his instrument, Murray Perahia returns to the LSO after 19 years to join Bernard Haitink for the opening two concerts of the 2015/16 season. He will perform concertos by Mozart and Beethoven in a series that concludes with British pianist Imogen Cooper. In October we look back to the start of the last century for two of Bartók’s piano concertos with Yefim Bronfman and Valery Gergiev, a pair of elaborate and intricate works for the instrument that show the Hungarian composer in his prime. And then a little je ne sais quoi: Ravel’s jazzy Concerto in G major brought to life by Hélène Grimaud and Manfred Honeck in November. Maria João Pires returns for two concerts with Daniel Harding and, by way of a preface to two of Bruckner’s sublime symphonies, she offers us a treat in the form of two Romantic concertos from Chopin and Beethoven. For those wanting even more insight into this outstanding musician, don’t miss Pires’ BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert on 26 November with Ashot Khachatourian, the last in a series dedicated to the piano music of Chopin, Liszt and Bartók that also features Ingolf Wunder, Alice Sara Ott and Ashley Wass.
