Concert for under-5s

Vanessa King and LSO musicians re-tell a popular children’s story through music, offering younger children the chance to experience live music in the beautiful Jerwood Hall. Dance and sing your way through the concert as we hear the instruments bring the story to life.

Join the Early Years team in these fun, interactive and creative music sessions. In age-based groups of no more than 15, your child will receive individual attention as well as the chance to interact with musicians and other children. LSO musicians will join us for the last few sessions. Group allocation depends on the ages of the children drawn**.

Workshops for adults

A Gamelan is a musical ensemble from Indonesia featuring gongs, metallophones, drums and bamboo flutes. Led by Gamelan expert Andy Channing, all parts are different and range from simple to more difficult, so anyone can have a go. As well as weekly workshops, performance opportunities are offered throughout the year.

LSO Discovery Day: Richard Strauss Suitable for all ages over 12 Sun 4 May 10am–5pm Barbican Hall & LSO St Luke’s Find out about Richard Strauss, whose work Also sprach Zarathustra was made famous as the opening theme to Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey. A day ticket includes access to a morning LSO rehearsal at the Barbican followed by talks and a performance of Strauss’ Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings at LSO St Luke’s. Singing Day: Beethoven Suitable for all ages over 16 Sun 22 Jun 10am–5.30pm Barbican Hall & LSO St Luke’s Join esteemed choral conductor David Lawrence in our fourth Singing Day as he leads a workshop on Beethoven’s Mass in C major (sung in German, accompanied by piano). Participants will watch a morning rehearsal with the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus at the Barbican, followed by a workshop in the afternoon at LSO St Luke’s. Whether you sing in a local choir or haven’t sung since school, this is an exciting opportunity to get to grips with a classic work. Some sight-singing ability is required. Crowd Out

Suitable for all ages Sat 21 Jun 3.30pm & 6pm Arnold Circus Bandstand, E2 7PQ Come along and listen to the world premiere performance of Crowd Out, a piece by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang for 1,000 voices. This piece, led by LSO Choral Director Simon Halsey, celebrates the energy and excitement of crowds and takes place in London’s historic Arnold Circus (Shoreditch). Outdoor free summer concerts for everyone Fri 6 & 27 Jun; 11 Jul 1.15–2pm Front lawn outside LSO St Luke’s Sun 20 Jul 1–1.30pm Whitecross Street (part of Whitecross Street Party) Join us on the front lawn outside LSO St Luke’s as we enjoy our annual outdoor summer mini-festival of short lunchtime concerts. With a variety of musical styles from around the globe, Inside Out offers something for everyone. Bring your lunch (and a rug’s not a bad idea) and enjoy the sunshine with friends, family or colleagues. Plus, come and support the LSO Community Choir as they join the annual local street party on Whitecross Street on 20 July. Free entry, just turn up on the day! Should it be raining, Inside Out will not go ahead.

The Orchestra is joined by young East Londoners from the LSO On Track scheme and members from LSO Create, the creative programme for adults with learning disabilities.

Workshops for 13- to 20-year-olds

The Digital Technology Group (DTG) is an initiative to support aspiring young musicians, composers and producers in the local area. Whether you are interested in rock, hip-hop or classical music, DTG can provide you with the skills to record and produce your music using professional studio equipment. Through regular hands-on sessions with industry experts and collaboration with other young musicians, you will have the opportunity to develop your music and creative performance skills.

Suitable for all ages over 12

LSO Soundhub, the Orchestra’s initiative to support up-and-coming composers across a wide range of musical genres, showcases extracts from the latest projects at LSO St Luke’s. First-year Soundhub composers Maxim Boon, Aaron Holloway-Nahum, Laurence Osborn, Helen Papaioannou, Robert Szymanek and Laurence Tompkins have spent the year pushing their work in unexpected directions. Orchestral Artistry Masterclass Suitable for all ages over 12

Mon 19 May 6–9pm Lecture Recital Room, Guildhall School, EC2Y 8DT Musicians from the Guildhall School will be coached by LSO Principal Bass Clarinet Lorenzo Iosco as part of the Guildhall School’s Orchestral Artistry course which is focused on developing the diverse skills required to become professional orchestral musicians.

String Academy Showcase Suitable for all ages

Sat 5 Jul 7.30pm Jerwood Hall, LSO St Luke’s During the first week of July, LSO St Luke’s will be awash with some of the most talented young string players from across the UK. As well as working together in large ensembles and learning orchestral repertoire, they will work on solo performances with LSO players. Join them for this concert, which forms the culmination of the week’s work.

LSO Youth Choir Selection Day For 7- to 18-year-olds

Sun 20 Jul 3–8pm City of London School for Girls, EC2Y 8BB If your child is over seven and lives or goes to school in Islington, Hackney or the City of London, they can apply for a place in the LSO Youth Choir. Places for the 2014/15 academic year will be awarded on the annual selection day. Places are awarded for one academic year, after which participants are invited to re-apply.
