Tracy Highland Tracy is a trained journalist turned PR consultant who ditched her law and finance studies in favour of a Mass Media degree and never looked back. Her decision has taken her far; her life a collage of interesting adventures-from the news room at Starcom in Barbados to the LA Studios of the late Ray Charles.Today, through her company, JILL Media, she continues to fulfill her passion for writing, PR, social media and people.

Alex Jackson Alex takes a genuine and passionate approach to capturing his subjects and is heavily inspired by art, fashion and travel. He aspires to capture timeless moments with striking detail. He says, “La Isla Bonita translates to ‘The Beautiful Island’ and this story is one close to my heart. It is a tribute to the beauty of our island Barbados, with its tropical breeze, mystical shores and warm people.”

Carlie Ester Carlie came of age ferociously scribbling through blank notebooks and precociously defying authority. These days she’d rather read the thesaurus than advocate chaos, and probably spends too much of her time running in circles. Carlie purports herself to be an athlete, radio announcer and professional writer - read on and you may find evidence to support at least one of these claims.

ne Caribbean Estates, is not just an ordinary real estate company, in fact it is anything but. Even its inception has a different tale to tell as it was conceived, organically, as a result of the utopian West Coast property, One Sandy Lane. Whilst strategizing how best to market One Sandy Lane outside of the normal platforms, CEO Richard Hudson, took the bold decision to approach leading luxury real estate brand Christie’s, this was by no means a timid step.

Christie’s is a true international powerhouse with 135 affiliated brokerages, operating from 1,200 offices in 45 different countries and, an extremely impressive, annual sales of US$118 billion. Initial meetings with Christie’s were very positive and they showed enormous interest in One Sandy Lane, but gently explained that one property did not constitute a real estate company. Hudson was resolute that an affiliation with Christie’s was the ideal way to present One Sandy Lane on the global stage so brought in,

marketing powerhouse, Dominique Silvera as his ‘Vice President of Strategic Planning & Marketing’ to help steer the brand forward. He was adamant that If Christie’s wanted a portfolio, they were going to supply one. They set about scrupulously hand selecting the most luxurious and distinguished properties that the Platinum Coast of Barbados has to offer and so One Caribbean Estates was born. One Caribbean Estates is now a thriving company and very much part of the Christie’s family, yet it remains true to its original ethos of marketing outside of the norm. When you visit their website you will notice a distinct lack of hard sell. Company policy is made abundantly clear by their strong strap-line “Our world revolves around you”. There is a lively blog, called ‘The One’ that subtly introduces prospective overseas purchasers to life in the Caribbean. Highlights include market insights, tips on the latest restaurants and shops, local art and the latest sporting events. They firmly believe that it is essential for overseas purchasers to get to know the island first and from that, finding the right property will evolve.

They are very much a boutique agency, with only eight full time staff members, but each one has been carefully selected for their knowledge and experience and trained to the highest level. This includes, overseas training at the Christie’s International Real Estate Luxury Specialist Conference which was held earlier this year at the Mandarin Oriental in Washington DC. This event earned them each a certificate of designation as a 2016 Christie’s International Real Estate Luxury Specialist, which is a globally recognized accolade.

One Caribbean Estates now boast a spectacular portfolio, it is not vast by some standards, approximately 75 properties, but each one carefully scrutinized to ensure that it complies to their very exacting standards.

Dominique Silvera, who, prior to joining One Caribbean Estates, spent 15 years helping to spearhead the marketing for companies such as Air Jamaica and Sandals Resorts, sat on an exclusive panel to showcase her techniques of alternative sales approach, showcasing their blog and philosophies on subtle and subliminal marketing to some of the biggest movers and shakers in the international real estate industry. An impressive feat that brought enormous prestige, not just for the company but also for Barbados. One Caribbean Estates now boast a spectacular portfolio, it is not vast by some standards, approximately 75 properties, but each one carefully scrutinized to ensure that it complies to their very exacting standards. It ranges from exclusive homes in gated communities such as Royal Westmoreland, Port St. Charles and Port Ferdinand, to the magnificent villas of Sandy Lane and Apes Hill but also includes, immaculate town houses at Heron Court and off-plan new builds at Zinnia, St. James. One Sandy Lane remains the jewel in their crown, and rightly so with its extraordinary penthouses boasting imported, hand polished marble floors and attention to detail such as gates designed by the same atelier that restored the gates at The Palace of Versailles and powder rooms finished with original, signed artwork instead of wallpaper (created exclusively for the property by well-known artists flown in from France for specifically this purpose). They are 9,500

square feet of sheer, opulent majestic luxury and every detail has been meticulously attended to, as befits their elite clientele. Whilst One Sandy Lane penthouses sell for an impressive US$19 million, the portfolio of One Caribbean Estates starts at just below $500,000. All prospective purchasers, regardless of budget, are considered with equal courtesy and respect. In order to facilitate everyone’s needs, they work closely with other agents, promoting partnerships and building strong relationships, so that no matter what your requirements, they will be able to accommodate you in every sense of the word. As the only Christie’s affiliate in the English speaking Eastern Caribbean, they truly have the network to provide whether you need a town house in St. James, a villa in St. Barts, or a condo in Turks & Caicos. This fledgling company is already an impressive high roller and will be opening their second office in Holetown later this year. They are certainly one to watch. HIGH TIDES AND GOOD VIBES The chic transformation at The Tides Restaurant By Julie Murphy Photos by Dan Christaldi, Loop Barbados and Jonathan Farmer

W

hile most of the island spent the final weeks of summer shaking the last specks of glitter from their hair and nursing serious tabanca as the calypso music faded like a distant memory, culinary aficionados were getting their flavour on at the newly reopened Tides Restaurant on the West! Naturally we had to check out what all the talk was about‌ Run by the dynamic husband and wife team of Guy and Tammie Beasley, patrons have long enjoyed the relaxed old world charm, stunning ocean views, delicious menu of fresh seafood and mouthwatering West Indian dishes and the fabulous personalized dining experience that has been the very soul of the restaurant since it was opened in 2000. And really nothing much has changed in that respect and yet‌ everything has changed.

The original courtyard completely redesigned offers guests a quiet place to have a chat or pre dinner drinks

Central lanai with phenomenal lighting fixture and view to the sea

The concept, architectural and interior design was done by Michael Gomes Associates with furnishings and fabric selections by Natalie Manning of Interiors By Natz’ whose assistance in bringing the final decorating touches to the completed product was invaluable. For those who re-call the entrance and original atrium, you’ll find a new lounge area with casual seating and a relaxed cosmopolitan vibe. The new ultra modern air conditioned bar is off to the side behind glass doors with chic white leather chairs and art nouveau mirrored tables. Two captivating chandeliers cascade delicately over the sleek black bar and the space has been transformed from what could only have once been described as plantation chic to urbane au courant. Two spacious outdoor seating areas are accessed from the North and South providing open air options for pre dinner cocktails or a quieter retreat from the crowd. As this part of the coast has developed into a cosmopolitan hub with trendy bars and intimate clubs, this space has

so much potential and brings a whole new dimension to the Tides experience. Sectioned into four dining quarters the main areas of the restaurant have been opened out and up with several levels throughout ensuring unobstructed views of the azure coastline from each table and essentially enhancing the experience, as each area has its own unique charm. The treehouse now has two floors, the atmosphere here remains enchanting with the four magnificent casuarina trunks growing out of the floor and through the roof. Three new eye-catching chandeliers hang like salty blossoms from the high rafters, stunning by day, sure to be sensational by night. The northern wall is a work of art in itself with rough cut coral stone blocks pieced together to form an eye catching mason’s mosaic. The central lanai is also accented with a dramatic light sculpture that hangs resplendent like a royal sea anemone, a magnificent piece that Tammie admits took 8 hours

to assemble! The new coral stone pillars have opened up the view and created a palatial frame for the ocean beyond. To the south of the restaurant the raised gazebo area offers more intimate dining and is ideal for smaller parties while the new garden gazebo has been completed redesigned, enclosed with floor to ceiling windows, air conditioning and a mirrored back wall that reflects the ocean view and creates the illusion of dining on your own floating island. The decor throughout is light, minimalist and in keeping with the oceanic theme. Hues of turquoise, cerulean and deep blue indigo blend throughout the restaurant, the floor is an elegant slate grey porcelain that seems to bind it all together. The original coral stone walls of the property retain the colonial style that was so much a part of the restaurants spirit but even these have been modernized. The entire effect is a modern celebration and comes together to radiate a subtly sensuous undertone, providing a new energy to the space. *I swear I didn’t eat oysters before I wrote this…it’s honestly just so damn sexy. Of course ambiance aside we all know why we’re here; food lovers unite! For the past 16 years under Guy’s direction, executive chef Simon Tempro and the team in the kitchen have been providing spectacularly flavourful feasts as visually appealing as they are tasty. But the rules have changed with the decor and this year they’ve brought in a new addition to their talented team in the form of one James Lidsey, an English chef with 16 years experience working within a Michelin Star kitchen training under Marco Pierre White. The result is a delicate fusion of flavour, style and finesse that makes every meal a celebration for the senses.

Enclosed and air conditioned garden gazebo provides the perfect excuse to escape from the tropical heat with a few friends for lunch

Roast Pineapple served on a Pineapple Carpaccio with Szechuan Pepper, spiced Pineapple Salsa, Lime Gel and Coconut Ice Cream

The new menu has much to offer. Lunch specials are excellent value at $72 for two courses and the menu is varied. Fresh local tartare is paired with Wakame seaweed salad adding Asian flair, the chicken Thai curry is delivered cocooned in it’s very own coconut husk and gets an A for presentation and flavour. Other light options include the Tides super salad which features spiced Lion Fish, a tasty local delicacy, and pickled yams (Usain Bolt would approve), a tempting seared tuna wrap and for those looking for something heartier, Bajan Pork Tenderloin or a sumptuous braised beef short rib. A quick skim through the desserts reveals that Bread and Butter pudding is on the menu, and therefore MUST be ordered; I do a quick calculation of my time on the treadmill to-morrow and realise resistance is futile… carpe diem…or in this case carpe dessert! #no-guilt Dinner promises another magical experience, with the fading light of the warm caribbean sun the stars come out and the bay is illuminated along the boardwalk while the restaurant is set aglow from the chandeliers and intimate lighting from a sea of candles within. Night-time is for indulgence and while I’m going to have to wait for ‘date night’ to try out the menu my mouth is watering at the options including open lobster ravioli, pan seared scallops with butternut squash risotto and a rustic seafood stew. We have strong feelings about the new and improved Tides; the flavours, the ambiance, the view, It looks like we’ve found our new favourite West Coast escape... The Tides Restaurant is open for dinner every night from 6:00pm to 11:00pm, and lunch Sunday to Friday from 12:00pm to 3:00pm. Telephone (246) 432-8356 to make your reservation.

The stars shone bright when fourteen beautiful ladies took to the stage at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre to vie for the crown of Miss Universe Barbados 2016. Attendees arrived to the sold out venue, ‘red carpet ready,’ for what was the first show of its kind in 9 years. The Miss Universe Barbados franchise holder, Brian Green produced a quality show, from its ‘on time’ start to the crowning finale, with Gaynelle Marshall as the consummate MC for the evening.

The contestants came on stage to Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’ in white dresses with a hint of sparkle and with rhinestone covered stilettos, and introduced themselves. Various video montages were shown over the course of the evening, including scenes across Barbados, interviews with the delegates, as well as footage from the archives of past Miss Barbados’s at the Miss Universe Show. Guest performers included songstresses Jaeesha Samuel and Nikita, and the current Miss Barbados Jewel Garner took her final walk and spoke of her experiences during her reign. Alian Ollivierre of I’m A Girl Barbados spoke on the invaluable mentorship programmes they offer to young girls. The patrons buzzed with excitement when the swimsuit section of the show commenced and the girls confidently took to the stage in shimmering bronze bikinis from Suga Apple Swim, by Kimberley Angoy, to appreciative applause from the audience. While Jamilah, Shannon, Kenya and Ukweli were strong crowd favourites, all of the girls received a roar of applause at the end of this segment. rris in Shannon Ha Another highlight of the by r ea w her swim Suga Apple. show was the evening gown

segment. Designer Wayne Smith designed a capsule collection exclusively for the MUB show, collaborating with each of the delegates for input into their gowns. While the colours and style choices were each as unique the ladies, they all looked confident and elegant. The difficult task of the evening was in the hands of the esteemed panel of judges: Nigel Wallace, Lene Hall, Tracy Archer, Sharon Sargeant and Neil Gilkes. The top five were chosen and prizes were awarded to Melanie Thorpe, Miss Photogenic, Christina Yearwood, Miss Congeniality and then it was down to the final three. Jamilah Forde, Shannon Harris and Christina Yearwood took a final walk before the judges. The Miss Universe mantra ‘Confidently Beautiful’ is about empowering woman around the world and formed the basis for the question the top three ladies had to answer, ‘What does confidently beautiful mean to you’. The audience held their breath in anticipation as the results all were waiting on arrived onstage; Christina Yearwood as second runner up, Jamilah Forde

The crown, worth $10 000 included blue and yellow topaz, diamonds and Swarovski crystals was made by God Jewelers of India. As Shannon took her walk she was showered in blue and gold confetti to the cheers from the audience. The stunning new Queen will go on to represent Barbados at the Miss Universe pageant in the Philippines on January 30th, 2017. Shannon says “it’s been nine years since Barbados last sent someone to the Miss Universe Pageant on our behalf... words can’t describe how anxious and excited I am to represent my country to the fullest especially during our 50th year of independence, it is such an honor! I also look forward to meeting and connecting with women from all over the world. It’s going to be an experience of a lifetime”. We wish you every success Shannon! PASSION FOR Reward doesn’t come without risk 54 LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2016 - APRIL 2017

D

wellings holds stature as the name recognized for bringing lifestyle shopping and affordable luxury to the homes and hearts of Barbadians. As they celebrate their 10th anniversary, we reminisce the decade of navigation that led to this point.

The journey started in 2006. Gael Alluard and Luis Carrillo, Director of Buying and Marketing and Managing Director respectively, were happily cruising through life. Gael, who is originally from France, had wet her beak distributing and marketing luxury items like perfumes and jewellery, and had a keen eye for style. Luis was heading upstream in a prosperous corporate position.

But no matter how successful you are, or how much you love your job, when the entrepreneurial spirit awakens within you, it sets a maelstrom into motion. With this voice of desire to ‘be their own boss’ nagging in their ears, Gael and Luis fell hook, line and sinker into creating a service-oriented, lifestyle shopping experience. It’s difficult to achieve but not impossible to conceive that one store would have sent such impactful ripples of change through the retail industry in Barbados. “At the time there was a building boom, ‘home’ was a growing thing but there wasn’t anywhere you could go to get everything to furnish your house in one place.” Luis recalls. “We wanted a fresh modern approach; a one stop shop.” Pairing their professional wisdom with their creative vision, the two dove headfirst into bringing ‘Dwellings’ to life.

“...at Dwellings we aren’t co-workers, we’re family.”

T

he first day is now a blurry memory, and yet it will always be unforgettable. Opening just before the crazy Christmas season of ‘06, Dwellings’ doors flew open with a much smaller space and a team green to sales-yet we all drank in this incredible new shopping experience and were thirsty for more.

After a decade, Dwellings has molded the face of home furnishing and interiors with great leaps and bounds. It continues to provide the best customer service hands down. Its growth has been organic, a constant shape-shifting of more space, more departments, more products and of course, more people. That’s because the spirit of Dwellings really isn’t in its four walls. It’s in its people. This includes founders Gael and Luis as well as those members of the ‘staff family’ who have navigated the last 10 years almost every step of the way. They are the trendsetters, the creators, the innovators that keep Dwellings on top, and they are bursting with pride at Dwellings making this milestone anniversary. This tightly knit group of 40 staff includes Kerry-Anne Denny, Store Manager, who says “I feel proud to be part of the Dwellings family because we are the leading lifestyle destination for everything home. Not to mention, we have the Ashley Furniture HomeStore which is America’s largest retailer of furniture. In addition, we have not one, but two, Liliplum locations on the island.” Supervisor Jade Browne wholeheartedly agrees, saying “It’s truly a family oriented and cohesive dynamic, because at Dwellings we aren’t co-workers, we’re family. This family model is the cornerstone of all our Dwellings values.”

It’s a retail store, yet.. it’s an experience. These values are also apparent in the genuine excitement every employee shows for their products. Cecille Best, Assistant Manager, likens receiving new arrivals to feeling like “a kid in a candy shop”. Expressing an exuberant passion for her profession, she’s only too happy to act as personal shopper to any customer, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that she, Jade, Kerry-Anne, and other colleagues, would all agree on going the extra mile for each other and certainly for their customers. Interacting with any staff of any department in Dwellings makes one thing clear. It takes a certain temerity to become a part of Dwellings. It takes charisma. It takes engagement. It takes drive. And, of course, it takes passion. Passion for your customers, co-workers, interior design, passion for the home. It’s an organization, yet…it’s a family. It’s a retail store, yet…it’s an experience. Dwellings is proud to be a company that promotes from within and looks to build a team that operates like a family. It’s a company that continues to thrive in a competitive market. This constant upward motion, this conscious decision to never want to rest on your laurels is what keeps Dwellings ahead of the curve.

ts continuing success is also partly due to the fact that the focus has always been on quality and efficiency, not just on getting “bigger”. Dwellings’ series of organic expansions are like progressing trophies on a mantle. First, it expanded a year after opening to include furniture. Then, the need arose for outdoor furniture. Then, in 2009, came the Design Studio which is dedicated to providing turnkey design solutions for any room in your home, from the alcove to the sitting room. The Design Studio is like having a personal shopper-a professional opinion on outfitting your home, fabrics in any pattern, access to any product you need, whether it’s already in store or a special order from the international market, and the best kept secret is: it’s an absolutely free service.

Inspirational Moodboard

The Design Studio is like having a personal shopper -a professional opinion on outfitting your home...

Janine Hinkson, Manager of the Design Studio, has watched the company grow over the last decade firsthand as she has been with the company since day one. Throughout all this time, she remains in awe of “what a great team of innovative people and entrepreneurs can do.”

“Introducing an amazing and entirely new concept like this to a small island was a big risk,” she begins, and we all know how the story ends. With great reward. It’s this keen eye for opportunity and style that gave Dwellings its edge, but it is making wise choices that keep it afloat, even through the turbulent, unpredictable economy a retail environment can harbour. Though the economy has naturally thrown some peaks and troughs in the last ten years, the Directors maintain a positive outlook at all times. Luis explains, “When you own and run your own business, there are a lot of sleepless nights. There is uncertainty. You’re in the middle of the ocean-if you stop swimming, you will drown…you must keep going.” Even in those early days, the greater goal has always been to take

Dwellings past our shores, and now Janine Hinkson, Manager of Dwellings that Dwellings has hit its ten-year Design Studio mark, that dream resurfaces, as Gael affirms her sincere desire for the company she (and all staff) loves: “We want to just knock this out of the ballpark.” Don’t worry Gael. Normally we would say it’s been “licked fuh six” but in this case, Dwellings makes a home run.

JAGUAR F-PACE LAUNCHED IN UNIQUE STYLE #jaguarworldfirst Photos compliments of Simpson Motors and Jaguar magine a corporate event taking place deep in the breathtakingly beautiful crystallized limestone cavern that is Harrison’s Cave, Barbados. Imagine further that the event in question is, of all things, the first time unveiling of a luxury car. That is exactly what took place this July when Simpson Motors unveiled the new Jaguar F-Pace in this unique fashion - unique enough to be considered a #JaguarWorldFirst. As noted by Marketing Coordinator, Nathan Simpson, “Having represented Jaguar since 2011, a spectacular affair was the only way to introduce a car like the F-Pace!”

“The F-Pace is the first SUV made by Jaguar – it’s a world first. So we thought it was appropriate to launch it with an event that was also a world first. And to our knowledge, this is the first time a vehicle has been launched in a cave, anywhere. This would not have been possible without Jo-Ann Jones and the team at Harrison’s Cave, who worked with us to create something truly special.” The launch consisted of an expedition theme, requiring guests to find the “rare and elusive” Jaguar which was somewhere deep in Harrison’s Cave. They explored the caves where the Jaguar was ultimately “found”, and then brought to the surface so that everyone could get a closer look. But what is the F-Pace? Sales Manager Nicholas Lashley describes the model. “Inspired by the Jaguar F-Type sedan, the F-Pace is a performance SUV that combines maximum driving exhilaration with efficiency. Technologically advanced to the core, F-Pace keeps drivers safe, connected and entertained. It has the capability for every road and the capacity for every day.”

The F-Pace reinvents the energy, strength and purity of form of the F-Type.From the shape of the bonnet to the pronounced rear haunches, its powerful looks make it distinctive and give it a unique,head-turning road presence.

Check out some of the reviews: TOP GEAR: “for me, it’s the best-looking SUV out there. If this doesn’t become Jaguar’s best-selling model ever, i’ll be stunned.” - April, 2016 TATLER: “They have successfully combined all the curb appeal, sporty features and exceptional performance that you’d expect from Jaguar.” - May, 2016

Above and shown here, guests at Harrison’s Cave during the launch of the Jaguar F-Pace.

The Jaguar D-Type won the Le Mans 24 Hour race three times in the 1950’s

The unique origins of Jaguar can be traced back to a British company that began by making motorcycle sidecars in 1922. The Swallow Sidecar Company later started building automobiles, switching its name to Jaguar after the Second World War. It produced premium saloons and sports cars, including the legendary XK120. Adding to Jaguar’s reputation was its motorsport success in the 1950s, winning the Le Mans 24 Hours race twice with a C-type and three times with a D-type. In 1961, the company launched what became perhaps the most iconic sports cars of all time, the E-type. Also during the 1960’s, Jaguar’s international profile was certainly bolstered by the so called British Invasion, especially in America. The popularity of all things British – The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Twiggy to name a few - propelled interest in the model. This distinctive link with popular culture remains to this day with Jaguar scoring defining roles in the Austin Powers movie franchise, the Mad Men TV show, and most recently in the movie Spectre, where both James Bond and his nemesis, Hinx, drove supercharged Jaguar models.

The Jaguar F-Pace is now available at Simpson Motors and is already the centre of attention in the showroom – and on the road.

Sir Charles Williams is the driving force behind C.O. Williams Construction Ltd and Apes Hill Club. A visionary with a vibrant personality and energy that belies his years. He may be eightyfour years old, but has lost none of his appetite for business and sport. He plays competitive polo and is former holder of the Guinness Book of Records’ oldest polo player in the world. As we complete our tour of his latest project and sit on the verandah of the Apes Hill Country Club, a wonderful example of colonial revival architecture nestled in a lush green landscape punctuated by tall and stately royal palms, we are captivated by the distant horizon filled with the azure blue of the Caribbean Sea and the fiery orange globe of the setting sun. Apes Hill Club now boasts the first true Country Club in Barbados, offering a high-quality experience, from golf and polo, to tennis, fitness centre and swimming all within a safe and secure environment. Tennis enthusiasts can hone their game against the beautiful backdrop of the Caribbean Sea on either of two AstroTurf courts available for play during the day and floodlit at night. The community has established a new standard for excellence in the Caribbean. The golf course has gained international

recognition as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for its commitment to the preservation of the environment, flora, fauna and wildlife, thus becoming one of only 2% of all golf courses in the world to earn such certification. Apes Hill Polo Club, with its full-sized field, is one of the finest of its kind in the West Indies. This is a place to indulge one’s love for all things equestrian: to share in the drama and spectacle of international polo matches against a stunning tropical backdrop. The rolling topography at Apes Hill Club affords views to the Platinum Coast of Barbados, with a select number of lots that are afforded the rare opportunity of views of both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. In the evening sky the illuminated royal palms frame our view as the glowing luxury cruise liners departing the shores of Barbados for our Caribbean neighbours seem to wind their way through the palms to the chorus of whistling frogs. The Apes Hill Country Club promises to deliver a vibrant, active and social lifestyle and one catches oneself yearning to be part of this exciting community.

THE CITY OF LOVE, LIGHT & LONGCHAMP By Tracy Highland

Alexa Chung and the Longchamp Penelope Curry bag.

70 LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2016 - APRIL 2017

ou can’t talk about luxury French leather goods without the name Longchamp coming to the forefront. It’s more than just fashion. Longchamp has a rich and interesting history dating back to the 1940’s. Each Longchamp bag is a symbol of exquisite craftsmanship. Details are paramount, each bag passing through the hands of several skilled artisans before it is complete. Take a closer look. The beauty is in the details. With absolute precision and unhurried care, the artisans stitch, attach and assemble the pieces that come together to form a piece that is a tribute to the wonderful family heritage started by founder Jean Cassegrain in 1948. The Longchamp story began not with bags but with pipes. Cassegrain, a tobacconist, in an effort to give his pipes an identity, had the ingenious idea to encase them in leather. Using the best artisans and finest leather, he transformed an ordinary item into something extraordinary, and his pipes became highly sought after. Because the name Cassegrain was already being used by his cousin, he stamped them with the brand ‘Longchamp’, inspired by one of the last remaining mills in Paris located at the end of the Longchamp racetrack. The rest became history. In the 1950’s the company expanded into small leather goods. By 1959 a manufacturing workshop was built in Segré in the Main-et-Loire region in France. In 1970 Longchamp launched its first line of handbags and by 1988 had opened a store on Rue Saint Honoré, the lifeblood of the Parisian fashion landscape. The street became home to their flagship store a few years later, and to this day the store remains a gold standard for design; a functional canvas of noble materials, warm colours and amazing light that perfectly showcases Longchamp’s areas of expertise. By the 1990’s the company had developed what has become one of their signature pieces, Le Pliage. Created by the founder’s son and President of Longchamp, Philippe Cassegrain, the bag was a huge success.

The light, simple, foldable nylon tote, accented with leather oval snaps and leather handles has become a classic. Today, Le Pliage comes in a range of sizes and fabrics. A favourite, introduced in 2012, is the leather version, made of the finest lambskin. More than 30 million have been sold worldwide. One thing remains the same though, the craftsmanship. The meticulous manufacturing process is still intact. In fact, it takes more than 100 steps to make each one. Le Pliage has become a celebrity A-List must-have. It’s a favourite of Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. More than 60 years later. Longchamp is still family run. The founder’s son Phillipe is President. His grandson and namesake, Jean Cassegrain is the company’s Chief Executive. His daughter-in-law Michèle is Head of Retail. His grandson Oliver is the US Head of Retail. His granddaughter, Sophie Delafontaine, is the Artistic Director and still oversees every detail of the Longchamp’s designs. Under their leadership the company has achieved remarkable success. Their hand bag collections remain as innovative as the man who started it all from his tobacconist shop all those years ago. They’ve expanded the brand by selling every season, a new collection of pret a porter and shoes amongst the handbags and accessories presented. Theses launches are created for modern women inspired by a spirit of creativity. Longchamp occasionally invites artists and designers to work together on bold collaborations. Thomas Heatherwick, Mary Katrantzou, Charles Anastase, Kate Moss, Sarah Morris, Tracey Emin and Jeremy Scott have all designed exclusive - and often audacious - models for the brand. “I love the quality and what the Longchamp Brand represents. The Le Pliage is a symbol of France, like croissants or the Eiffel tower,” explained Jeremy Scott. Artistic Director, Sophie, encourages instinct and impulse in the collaborative design process, but it is backed in production by the full artisanal expertise that is synonymous with the Longchamp brand. The results are amazing; a perfect marriage of out of the box thinking with traditional standards of quality and artisanship. Over the years Longchamp’s commitment to excellence has not gone unnoticed. In 2007, The French government awarded Longchamp the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant - Living Heritage Company label, which recognizes French companies demonstrating artisanal and industrial excellence.

Longchamp renovated its historic store on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris with a spectacular work of art that changes colours titled ‘Mindscapes’ by American artist Ryan McGinness.

Left: Actor Matt Bomer carrying the Le Foulonne Travel Bag.

This year the company is paying homage to its roots on Rue Saint-Honoré with the Paris Premier Collection. The leather tote, made of five star calf skin, hits all of the required marks: strong lines, impeccable quality and beautiful detailing. “With clean, structured lines, the tote is inspired by the typical architectural features of the neighbourhood. Its bold shape recalls the rows of arched windows in the Rue de Rivoli and the Rue de Castiglione. Its rounded metal details are a tribute to the wrought-iron gates that stand imposingly in front of mansions brimming with history. This tote is a tribute to the connection between Longchamp and the first arrondissement, where the company continues to reinvent itself as the years roll by. Its name is a love letter to Paris and its shape reveals Longchamp’s unique craftsmanship. The Paris Premier bag is a symbol that embodies Longchamp’s Parisian roots and its outstanding mastery of leather.” - Longchamp. Little touches of metal on leather provide striking contrast. The zipper pulls are handstitched. The area where the handles meet the bag is decorated with beautiful folds of leather. Inside the tote, a small case holds your personal items. It is crafted to stand the test of time and is a return to the unmistakeable elegance of Parisian style. Longchamp is now available in 80 countries across the world and it demands the same quality and expertise across all sites. All of the manufacturing is still done in France and Longchamp set up training and apprenticeship programmes to ensure the artisanal know- how is passed down from generation to generation and the Longchamp quality assurance remains safely intact. “Our family remains committed to developing the brand in all geographic areas. We will continue to expand our exclusive brand stores, upgrade current infrastructure and enhance the quality of the customer experience in every store. The quality of our products and services will reinforce our international growth,” said CEO, Jean Cassegrain. OUTDOOR LIVING Made Easy with Jenny Blanc

ime spent out of doors – whether enjoying a morning coffee, soaking up the sun by the pool, sipping a sundowner or hosting an elegant dinner party under the stars – is one of the key features of life in the Caribbean. In fact it’s safe to say that most of the day is spent outside, making these outdoor living areas just as important as the rooms within. With 15 years’ experience designing homes in the tropics Jenny Blanc have unrivalled expertise in selecting furniture suitable for outdoor use and terrace living – offering not only the Jenny Blanc collection of island made furniture but exclusive access to the latest designs from the world’s finest specialist suppliers including Century Furniture, Oxley’s, Ego Paris, Vincent Shepard and exclusive Cane Line furniture. From their luxurious showroom on the West Coast, Jenny Blanc can provide a complete, tailor made outdoor furniture solution for the Caribbean whether for residential or commercial use including private homes, rental properties, restaurants and hotels. Encompassing everything from beautiful outdoor fabrics and decorative accessories to furniture for dining, seating and sun worshiping. Whether you’re looking for a complete refurbishment or simply to choose some bespoke cushions and decorative accents to refresh the space, a visit to the Jenny Blanc showroom should be your first port of call. Of course, outdoor living areas come in different shapes and sizes so the key is understanding the requirements for each. An outdoor dining space is an essential part of most homes in the tropics and a covered terrace often provides the perfect place for this. With each home that Jenny Blanc designs a large dining table is almost always required along with dining chairs and often an elegant bar area with additional seating. Although somewhat sheltered, the beauty of these spaces is that they are still open to the elements so all materials from furniture to fabrics need to be very carefully selected in order to withstand the intense afternoon sun, humidity and rain as well as the strong island breezes. Only furniture which is purpose built for a tropical marine climate is up to the task. 92 LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2016 - APRIL 2017

A covered bedroom terrace is another opportunity to create a luxurious living space – a master bedroom terrace might include a double sun lounger alongside a breakfast table and chairs allowing couples to relax and dine in privacy. For smaller bedroom terraces a comfortable chair is a welcome addition, providing a space to sip coffee or read a book before the sun loungers beckon. Covered terraces also provide much needed shade and are the perfect place for relaxed lounging and cooling off during the heat of the day - the challenge here is to re-create the comfort of an indoor living room outside. Comfortable and practical seating is the first priority – sofas that you can sink into but which are also suitable for use out of doors are required. The key is to provide plenty of versatile seating options so family and friends can spread out or come together as they wish. Though covered, an outdoor lounge will still experience its fair share of tropical weather including humidity and rainfall so specialist fabrics, designed for outdoor use are essential. LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2016 - APRIL 2017

93

Gazebos provide a further option for outdoor dining – situated away from the main house amongst the beauty of the garden they set the scene perfectly for a romantic dinner party. Often accompanied by a BBQ or outdoor kitchen area for more informal occasions, they are the epitome of casual Caribbean elegance when softly lit with candles in hurricane lanterns. Dining tables made from coral stone, wrought iron or hardwoods such as iroko or teak are at the heart of the Jenny Blanc island furniture collection and can be made to order to seat anything from two to twelve guests! Faux weave or decorative metalwork seating provides a comfortable solution for long, luxurious tropical dinner parties. Poolside areas are often completely open and the priority here is of course sun loungers! These must be incredibly hardwearing to withstand a daily dose of sun tan oil, chlorine, scorching sunshine and of course the odd rain shower. Ego Paris loungers are one of the most popular choices at Jenny Blanc – supremely comfortable, easy to manoeuvre and incredibly elegant, they are available in a variety of colour combinations to suit your style. Parasols are also essential, providing a cool retreat for relaxing or dining. Tucci parasols are renowned throughout the world for their unrivalled quality and feature in almost all of Jenny Blanc’s design projects. Easy to use and available in different shapes and sizes, they are resilient to strong breezes and seaside corrosion, making them perfectly suited to life in the tropics. For those who want to get the most out of their outdoor space but don’t know where to start, a visit to the Jenny Blanc showroom in St. James is a must. With years of experience designing tropical homes the talented team can plan furniture layouts to maximise your space, offer ideas and inspiration and best of all, take away the hard work as they organise everything from shipping to delivery. Gigi says “My gift box was inspired by a rustic Christmas theme. I wanted to capture the perfect balance of an old time Bajan Christmas with a new world minimalist appeal. It’s a great and inexpensive way to personalise all your gifts”.

Orlando says “I believe that receiving a gift should be an experience; a gift with a gift inside of it! It’s perfect for holding precious jewellery or keepsakes plus it’s super easy to make! Fabric is a lot easier to fold and manipulate than wrapping paper and a lot more stylish; I’ve added the ribbon not only to finish it off but to seal the box! P.S. Make sure to tie your bow a particular way, so you can tell if someone has been peeking! ”

Yasmeen Waterman is a multi-faceted designer, artist, decorator, event planner, Yasmeen works within many various disciplines. Natural forms, textures and colours all find their way into her design. Yasmeen says “I see art and design all around me and, from many walks along the seashore I have picked up treasures. The natural beauty of the coastal landscape became the inspiration for this gift box with patterns of sea fan, spirals shapes of seashells and speckled glittering sand.

Celebrating 60 Years for Customer, Community and Country Throughout its 60 years in Barbados, customers, community and country have been at the heart of Scotiabank’s operations – so it was a natural progression to make these vital sectors the focus of the Bank’s 60th anniversary celebrations. Since April, the Bank has created a series of events designed to give sincere thanks where due, honour those who have contributed to its success, and in general share the joy of its achievements.

Current and past branch managers Caseline Gumbs (centre) and Bonnie Phillips (left) chat with Scotiabank Holetown’s eldest customer, 106 year old Melville Williams (right).

National Hero, the Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers presents a delighted Cynthia Vaughan, Scotiabank customer, with an autographed bat at Scotiabank Haggatt Hall’s 60th anniversary celebration in August.

Director of Human Resources Carol Edey presents a token of appreciation to Peter Ross, one of Scotiabank’s original employees in Barbados.

Cherishing Community and Country One of the most engaging parts of Scotiabank’s 60th anniversary has been the Random Acts of Kindness created and carried out by Scotiabank staff, which are focused on surprising the public with fun, thoughtful and generous acts – a very personal way of thanking the community for its support. Always focused on philanthropic efforts, Scotiabank has intensified its commitments in celebrating its 60th year of operations, especially towards initiatives that benefit children, education, health and entrepreneurship. Among the beneficiaries have been the Cherry Tree Trust, which assists entrepreneurs with start up loans, and to which Scotiabank has committed $60,000 over 3 years.

The Scotiabank Fuh De People Tour and The 1688 Orchestra made a special stop at Scotiabank’s flagship branch.

(Even More) Special Treatment For Scotiabank Customers Scotiabank has taken considerable pleasure in acknowledging the contribution its customers have made to its success – starting with some of the Bank’s very first account holders. Original customers Shirley Seale, Nick Parravicino and Muriel LaForte were all honoured at Scotiabank’s anniversary celebrations launch in April (as were original Scotiabank employees, Peter Ross and Alister Archer). Current customers have also shared in the fun, enjoying cake, activities and even special gifts during celebrations held each month at alternating branches, culminating in Warrens this September. Outside the branches, Scotiabank has treated the general public to open air musical performances by the energetic 1688 Collective & Orchestra during the well-attended Fuh De People Concert Series. “Our customers and the community are the reasons for our success and longevity in Barbados,” said Scotiabank Senior Marketing manager Lisa Cole. “It’s important to us that we show them how much their support means to us and to include them in our celebrations this year.” From a slice of anniversary cake to significant financial support for local small business, Scotiabank’s 60th anniversary celebrations are intended to say thank you to all – on every level. 98 LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2016 - APRIL 2017

Cherry Tree Trust trustee Renee Kowlessar (left) and co-general managers Sasha Sheehy (middle) and Sheila Leacock (right) receive a donation from Scotiabank Managing Director David Noel.

What a refreshing surprise! Scotiabank team members from the Managing Director’s Office handed over cool treats to Bridgetown commuters on a hot August day.
