Writing is a defining passion for Melanie. Three Big Questions to Ask So You Can Live Financially Ever After Romance and finance. Yes the two words rhyme but aside from that, they don’t really feel like they have much in common. One makes your heart flutter, the other makes you rack your brain. One involves sentiment and emotion, the other involves practicality and logic – or should! However, if you are getting serious about someone, you should give some serious thought as to how the two are connected. Issues with finance can take the romance out of a relationship in the offing, a wedding in the planning or even a marriage in the making. In fact, a survey by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants found that money is the biggest cause of arguments between men and women with money matters causing 27% of quarrels. Children only caused 16%. With the popular summer wedding season approaching, romance is definitely in the air. But if you’re thinking of or have already popped the question, here are some big questions you should make sure you have answers for so that you can live financially ever after. What Are Your Financial Goals? You may be totally in sync about what you want out of life as a couple – a house, a car, a dog, 2.5 kids. But it’s important to dig deeper than that and discuss how you and your partner envision these life goals panning out financially. For instance, those 2.5 children – do you want to have them back to back to get diaper and formula expenses out of the way up front or do you prefer to space them out? Do you want to send them to public school or private? Your house is another life/financial goal that should be discussed in more depth as differences in opinion can mean differences in cost. A house in rural Barbados will incur a different set of costs compared to a house in suburban Barbados with everything from land price (cheaper) and gas money (possibly more) being important to take into account. How Do You Feel About Separate Accounts? This question, like the one above, is actually the gateway to a host of other questions that can reveal how you and your beloved will deal with money going forward. Some couples believe that all financial matters should be merged and that having separate accounts is a sign of distrust. However, for many couples having separate accounts in addition to a joint account makes household bookkeeping easier. The joint account is used for household expenses such as bills, groceries, rent or the mortgage and insurance. The separate accounts can then be used at each partner’s
discretion for optional or personal expenses such as entertainment, clothes, gifts and so on. What is your family’s financial history and values? This is definitely not a question which most people would feel comfortable asking outright! Furthermore you are unlikely to get an objective answer. Nonetheless it is essential to know as the way someone was brought up is a major factor in how they approach money issues – for better or for worse. If someone was raised in a household where money was always tight, they may grow up to be very thrifty. On the other hand, if they grew up with parents who always gave them everything they wanted when they wanted it, they may find it difficult to separate financial needs from wants when they become the money earner themselves. While it would not be prudent to ask it directly, this is a question which you must seek out an answer for over time, by asking other questions and keeping your ears open for cues. Try asking whether they had an allowance and if they had to do chores for it or what kinds of part-time or summer jobs they may have had in their teens. Questions about whether their family went on lots of vacations, did their family have their own home or did they move around a lot, did they feel like their parents worked long hours and how did they pay for university, are also other indicators. In the end, marriage is a merging of not just two hearts but two incomes and two sets of financial values. Make sure that you have everything in sync to help create a long and happy marriage.

Lights, Camera & Action! The unforgettable Broadway to Barbados was back again for a dazzling 2016 show. By Georgina Ince

he annual Broadway to Barbados Production returned to the shores of Barbados for a magnificent show this year and once again ‘raised the bar’ of excellence. The Frank Collymore Hall in Bridgetown came alive for the shows, and audiences were dazzled with a wide selection of mega talented musical stars for six fabulous nights in February and March 2016. The Broadway to Barbados’ 2016 show featured a breathtaking line-up of musical voices and songs under the magical theme of The Greatest Songs of The Silver Screen and Broadway. This year’s line-up featured award winning vocalists and musicians, some of Broadways finest performers. The vocalists were Jeannette Bayardelle, Carter Calvert, David Jennings, Andrea Rivette, Chuck Wagner and Danny Zolli. These were backed up by the seamless sounds of musical instruments played by Roger Cohen, Abe Saenz, David Weinstein, Mike Wilson and Neil Berg. These performers have appeared in some of the most famous Broadway shows in the world including Jekyll and Hyde, Les Miserables, Into the Woods, Jesus Christ Superstar and many more. Special mention should also be made of local talent Andre Woodvine who was brilliant on the sax and flute. Each unique performance was beautifully choreographed and took audiences on a musical journey of songs from world-famous Broadway shows. The show featured classic hits such as I Will Always Love You from The Bodyguard by Jeanette Bayardelle as well as My Heart Will Go On and Endless Love by Carter Calvert and David Jennings from The Titanic and Endless Love respectively. Broadway to Barbados was conceived by Jacob and Michal Hassid of Diamonds International along with Robert Bourque with a view to raise funds to support the development of the island’s main hospital: The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH). The primary focus was the completion of the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), the allocation of funds to repair diagnostic equipment and the training of medical personal. This vision would not have been possible without international musician Neil Berg who joined forces with the Barbados team and created, along with many other contributors, an incredible show. Neil Berg is a world-class producer, lyricist and a composer, who has worked on many projects including The Man Who Would Be King, Heidi, Jesus Christ Superstar and the now world-famous Neil Berg’s 100 Years of Broadway, which is now the number one Broadway touring concert in the United States. Berg is one of Broadway’s most talented artists and every year brings sterling new talent to the island’s stage, graciously combining these new stars with seasoned performers who have been involved in this spectacular show from it’s humble beginnings many years ago. Broadway to Barbados returned to Barbados’ shores in 2013 after a short break and the event has raised over BDS$1 million dollars, with BDS$743,581 going towards state of the art equipment, training programs for key staff, hospital furniture and the completion of the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) ward. This has enabled the hospital to offer better health care to both local Barbadians and visitors alike. Cast in Wizard of Oz costumes

In 2016 the trust’s goal is to channel the funds raised to upgrade the Accident & Emergency (A&E) department with the latest technology and sophisticated equipment needed and these funds are greatly appreciated by the various departments at the Hospital. In order to offer their continued support, Broadway to Barbados launched their ‘QEH 25k Plus Club and Friends’ in late 2015. This club aims to help the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the long-term to continue to create better healthcare on the island. There are three contribution tiers to this charity; Diamond, Ruby and Sapphire, the membership level dependent on the monetary contribution made. Each individual member of this

exclusive club has a plaque at the QEH so people visiting can appreciate which companies or individuals have financially supported the improvements. At the Broadway shows each year there is an innovative silent auction that relies on the generous contribution of the islands business’s and this year the selection of unique items up for auction was impressive and did not disappoint. The silent auction prizes consisted of a variety of items ranging from stays at luxury hotels to exquisite home furnishings. All of the donations were once again highly coveted and resulted in this facet of the event raising a significant amount of funds.

I
t is a well known fact that eating a sufficient quantity of fresh fruits and vegetables is highly beneficial for the human body to perform at optimum level. We all remember that diagram of the food pyramid from school days, informing us that we need certain amounts of nutrients and minerals for a balanced diet. What if it was possible for you to receive those same benefits, but by consuming absolutely no animal protein? Yeah of course, vegans and vegetarians have been doing this for ages, the benefits of which have been touted the world over. But, what if you could ensure that your body could perform above and beyond its best, by maintaining a diet involving mostly uncooked fruits and vegetables? Well, actually you could.’ I sat down for a chat with someone who has not only been adhering to this lifestyle for a number of years now and can testify to its authenticity, she has also trained and studied extensively about the nutritional benefits and conditions of “living raw”, and ultimately, the science behind it. Manuela Scalini Archer was born and raised in Brazil, and switched to veganism at the age of 20. At the time she was living in Northern California, pursuing a degree in film. After obtaining her degree, Manuela began a successful career, working on feature films in Hollywood, living a fast-paced and glamorous, yet highly stressful life. Always one to find solace in nature, she would seek outdoor adventures such as hiking and mountain climbing, getting her fair share of exercise and fresh air, in the hopes of combating stress caused by her demanding career. After a snowboarding accident, Manuela suffered with ceaseless inflammation and pain. After countless attempts at healing using traditional medicine, a friend made a suggestion that she try a cleanse to see if it would reduce some of the inflammation. Manuela discovered that so much processing went into the production of most of the foods she was consuming. Despite the fact that she was vegan, there was still such a large amount of chemical processing involved and not enough truly organic and fresh choices. That’s when she discovered the raw lifestyle. Eating raw is basically consuming mostly uncooked plant based food; that is, not heating above 118 degrees Farenheight. When food is heated above this temperature, essential enzymes are lost, thus denaturing the nutrient and mineral content of these foods. Preserving the enzymes in plant based foods ensures that they are at their freshest level possible, which in turn makes them easier to digest, preserves alkalinity in the body, and over time rids the body of all heavy metals and toxins. After just a week on a wholly raw diet, Manuela noticed a significant difference in how she felt and looked. Better sleeping patterns, increased energy and an almost complete cease of sinus troubles, which had been the bane of her existence for many years. This natural approach to eating stoked a fire in Manuela. “It’s more than just what you eat, it’s an extension of living your life in its raw state” claims Manuela. “The longer the shelf life of your food, the more damage it does to your body. Adopting a raw lifestyle became less of a diet and more of a lifestyle choice.

Manuela teaches private and small group raw food classes at her clients houses, runs weekend detox retreats and is also available for weekly or occasional personal chef services, where she spends a few hours of the week preparing healthy raw and gluten free/dairy free cooked natural foods for her clients. The nutritional benefits to be gained from eating a mostly raw diet are extensive. Fresh fruits and vegetables are highly rich in phytonutrients and minerals. In essence, they are what gives them their bright colours and are important for the prevention of cancers and other chronic diseases, ultimately needed for the overall health of the immune system. “Phyto” means “plant” and these nutrients are only available in plant based foods. When these foods are heated, these essential phytonutrients are damaged, changing their composition, making them less bio-available to the body. Heat also damages proteins, causing the amino acid chains to congeal, making the proteins unstable and sometimes even harmful to the body, causing inflammation and acidity. consumption of good fats, mono-unsaturated fats which are present in foods such as avocados, olives and almonds as well as omega-3’s found in flax, and most nuts and seeds, require that these fats be consumed in a mostly raw state. When fats are heated, they lose their anti-oxidant qualities and become sticky, making them hard to digest and diminishing the body’s ability to transport oxygen. Manuela states that it all comes down to “digestion, assimilation and elimination”. Raw food is excellent for assimilation because the nutrients are more easily absorbed when food is in its raw state, because the enzymes are preserved. The high fiber content of raw fruits and vegetables makes them easier to eliminate from the body, in turn making it easier on the digestive tract. Good digestion is very important for overall health and well being. Manuela believes that “Raw is great, but raw, fermented and sprouted is better”. This is because in fermented foods such as nut cheeses, kefirs and cultured veggies, and sprouted beans and nuts, the enzyme activity is happening in the food , the actual life force is evolving right there, making these foods highly beneficial once consumed in that state. With all of her knowledge gained from extensive research into the raw food movement, along with training and attending workshops and retreats, Manuela quit her over demanding job and decided to embark on a journey of self discovery. By 2009 she had acquired a certificate to be a raw food chef and educator. She travelled the globe extensively, following her education and acquiring new knowledge and skill with every experience she encountered. On a visit to Barbados for a vacation, Manuela held her first retreat, along with help from her friend Zed Layson who runs Surfers Point, the retreat location. It was on this visit that Manuela met and fell in love not only with the island of Barbados, but also with her husband Phil. She decided to stay in Barbados and establish her name and help to spread the knowledge and insight into living a raw life. “I sincerely believe that Barbados was the missing link that complimented the whole raw lifestyle because of its unique connection to nature.” Manuela has conducted a total of 6 retreats here on the island, while still hosting retreats in the Amazon and increasing her skill set and knowledge. The birth of her daughter Maia, has turned her focus more on teaching classes locally and educating about the raw food movement and what it entails. The biggest challenge she faces is mostly the availability of some of the ingredients needed for her recipes and the fact that some of them can be quite
Caramelised tomato sauce This tomato sauce tastes like an true Italian slow simmered sauce, but done in 5 minutes prep time (45 minutes in the oven). It’s our family staple. • Slow roast in the oven about 12 large tomatoes, quartered, 4 peeled and quartered onions, 12 cloves of garlic and drizzle generously with olive oil, salt and pepper. • Roast at low temperature for 75 minutes. • Once it’s caramelized, place all in a blender with all its juice, some extra olive oil, a few leaves of fresh basil, thyme, oregano and rosemary, a few more raw garlic cloves, approximately 2 raw tomatoes, 1 celery stalk, a touch of coconut sugar if the tomatoes are too acidic and blend until smooth. I prefer mine chunky so I just pulse it a few times in blender. You can also add some soaked cashews to make it creamier. Done! You can freeze it in small portions and add some accents such as olives, capers, peppers, as you use it.

costly. There is a big demand for fresh, organic fruits and vegetables and she aims to support local farmers as much as possible. Fruits like avocados and coconuts, and root vegetables such as eddoes are wonderful sources of natural goodness and are all available on the island “I want to start incorporating more herbal bush medicine into my regime and aim to support the local movement”. Manuela will be opening a kitchen offering raw vegan foods, detox take outs and desserts; Its all coming soon! Her philosophy is that she would never insist that a client undertake a fully raw diet if that is not what is best for them. The abundance of the diet would be 70-80 percent raw, 30 percent cooked. Avoid anything refined or overly processed and limit animal protein to once or twice a week. The best piece of advice she gives her clients is to learn the tools necessary and listen to what your body is telling you. Each individual human being has different needs. “My goal is to bring people back to their health through empowerment, education, healing and prevention. It’s about keeping the body in balance.”

But one cool February evening at Lantern’s Mall in Hastings, I also learned from hot comedic duo Chrispen “Rum” Hackett and Simon “Koke” Alleyne, that comedy is also serious business. First, I was really intrigued by the choice of stage name. “All the way back in April last year… we were just mekkin’ sport and ended up saying “Rum and Koke”. And oh, you know what? Because Simon’s darker he’s the Coke and because I’m brown-skinned, I’m the brown rum,” Chrispen offered with a grin. Simon shared further: “We were at TGI Restaurant in Orlando and saw Barbados rum and coke, just randomly, on the drinks menu. It just confirmed to us that rum and coke is something universal. That’s what we wanted – a name that is universal which also represents the brand of comedy that we do - not necessarily specific to just Barbados and the Caribbean.”
“So it was serendipity?” I asked. “Yeah… whatever that word means. It was fate – an omen,” Rum and Koke countered without skipping a beat. However, their start in comedy occurred much earlier where they met as cast members of the popular Laff It Off – an annual Bajan stage show. Whether under the lights or backstage, the two actors discovered a synergy they decided to capitalise on by doing comedy skits together. From then Rum and Koke began. “Our first performance as Rum and Koke came during Laugh Out Loud Caribbean at the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium…to a fairly modest audience, 2 – 3,000 people. It was there that we recognized our style of comedy. We tell people that we don’t tell jokes; we show jokes. So our style is different - not stand up but situational or skit comedy. As a two-hander, we found there’s nobody else in Barbados really doing this…it is quite physical and interactive.” Simon and Chrispen’s acting skills enhance their audience’s experience; by “going stage left, stage right or coming off stage, rather than standing in front of a mic. They also credit their sound engineer, DJ Kareem Hackett, who happens to be Chrispen’s brother, with taking their performances to another level with the use of well-timed sound effects and music. These days, the hottest means of sharing anything and going viral is video. For Rum and Koke, Marniko Media Inc. (Nicholas King and Maria Fitzpatrick) has been integral to growing their popularity. ”They have been the persons behind our videos and we owe them everything we have. We love working with them as they complement us extremely well.” In such a short period, Rum and Koke’s portfolio is already impressive including major events like the Bachanaal Time Best Of Crop Over show (popular calypso tent) in 2015 and 2016 AgroFest, Barbados’ national agricultural exhibition. Because of their “ability to switch it up”, the young men both in their 30s, also have attracted quite a few corporate clients - the National Insurance Scheme, Barbados Light & Power, and Lex Caribbean to name a few, where they performed and emceed at functions and awards shows. Alleyne and Hackett have also lent their voices to more serious messages via advertising on behalf of organizations like the HIV Commission and the Barbados Tourism Product Authority. Of course word of such talent and drive spread further afield quickly. Chrispen demonstrated how being prepared and proactive combined with spot-on timing, can determine how far one can go. “Our first major break outside of Barbados, came when we did the Alternative Comedy Festival in Trinidad and Tobago. I contacted one of the promoters and told him this is what we do, this is who we are. He said, ‘Okay, let’s see what you have.’ I sent him one or two clips and he booked us right away.” This show at Shaw Park - a massive, new performance hall in Tobago accommodating about 13,000 persons - is counted among their most memorable: “When you heard the roar of the audience, you could feel it in your chest.” The duo is also slated to perform in St. Maarten and Cayman Islands, due to encouragement from others in their field. Alleyne and Hackett expressed great appreciation for support from Caribbean comedy stalwarts like Trevor Eastmond, who readily endorse Rum and Koke when promoters enquire. In fact, they regard veteran comedian Eastmond as “a godfather of comedy in Barbados… involved in the art-form for close to 40 years and who’s toured the Caribbean and abroad. He is clearly a mentor for us.” One of the keys to Rum and Koke’s success, is the ability to operate at a high standard with “family-friendly” material. “Rum and coke is a universal drink and our brand reflects that.” Their style and clean material allows for their routine to suit a wide demographic: school children, teens, and adults, even those in senior citizens homes. While acknowledging their adult patrons response to naughtiness and double entendre, they never cross boundaries. “No cursing and no heavy sexual overtones”, though a little cleverly written innuendo is interspersed. For material, they write satire about international and local events and, examine the differences between men and women as well as the way of doing things in North America vs. Barbados and the Caribbean. Their fans, who span a wide demographic, follow them on social media channels Facebook and Youtube. For the near future, Rum and Koke are planning their own platforms and comedy shows, which will also introduce up-and-coming comedians. Further, they are strategizing when it comes to their branding, longevity and “the Rum And Koke experience.”
“We know this year is 50 years of Independence. We know a lot of tourists will be in. People from the Diaspora and around the world. So the comedy product has to be of a high level.” “You have a rum, you have a Coke and then you mix them together, it becomes a totally different drink – an ultimate blend. Our comedy is a blend.” Refreshing!

Coral Island Interiors was born out of a love for design. It’s no accident that over the last ten years the Company has grown to become one of the most sought after interior design firms in Barbados. Their work, which has won international awards, can be seen in some of island’s most prestigious locations including Apes Hill, Sandy Lane and Royal Westmoreland.

This year, as Coral Island Interiors marks their tenth anniversary, the Holetown based operation which offers creative interior design services from concept to completion, is much more streamlined. The team has grown but the one thing they are adamant about not changing is the model of one on one service with their clients. When owners Lindsey Archer and Sarah Williams started the business, they never imagined how successful it would become, nor was that the focus initially. It seemed a natural progression for both designers. Sarah and Lindsey are a formidable team. They work exceptionally well together. Their personal styles are quite different but it has brought a wonderful balance to their design firm. Lindsey mostly favours colour and antiques, a style gained perhaps from having travelled extensively, and whose eclectic experiences include living in Europe, India & Africa. Sarah prefers neutral tones, white and soothing surroundings and has a gift for selecting fabrics & furnishings which complement this style. But both are perfectionists and having learned from each other throughout the years, they deliver a flawless result. One client even refers to them as the ‘A-Team’. However, they refuse to pigeon hole themselves into a particular style. Their style is always client centred as each client and each project is different. They listen to the client’s wants and bring them to life in a unique and creative way, while considering materials that will work in the Caribbean climate. Once the initial ideas are formulated, colour schemes

& fabrics selected, the design proposals are then tweaked and orders placed. Throughout this whole process the client is kept fully abreast of the progress of the project as it moves towards completion. One of the more interesting design requests was from an overseas client who was furnishing their villa in Mustique. The rooms in the villa were ‘themed’ with names of countries and continents. The interior furnishings of each room had to be based on the name of the room – one room was named ‘Brazil’, so tropical themed décor was perfect. ‘India’ was furnished with loud colours and mirrored accessories, ‘Morocco’ became a tented secluded hideaway and Portugal was furnished with a nautical and historical themed decor. It was obviously quite a challenge initially sourcing fabrics and furnishings to reflect what they wanted and give each room its own particular style but the result was beautiful and the client was very satisfied. “It was also tremendous fun not to mention we had the opportunity to spend a couple of days on the island of Mustique – working of course!” Lindsey recounted.

In 2013 they won 4 Best Interior Design Awards in the 2013 2014 International Property Awards, after making a submission on a residential project at Apes Hill. Their work on the Boiling House, a plantation yard stable and barn dating back to the 1600’s which was converted to a 2 bedroom residence with a large area for outdoor entertaining, earned them awards for ‘Best Interior Design Private Residence’ for Barbados and then the Caribbean. Coral Island Interiors was given high praise for maintaining the historical integrity of the property, incorporating the client’s heirloom pieces, while creating a practical living and entertaining space. They went on to also win ‘Best Interior Design Apartment’ for Barbados and then the Caribbean for work on a penthouse at Villas on the Beach. The design they completed was an amazing transfer of elements of the location’s natural beach surroundings to the fittings and furnishings within the apartment. A further award was won again in the Property Awards 2015 for another residiential project on the island. The wins have meant more recognition and their team is hard at work on proposals for the upcoming months. “Our portfolio is growing, which is nice,” Lindsey shared. “I can’t believe it’s been ten years, it doesn’t feel like it.” she added. For both of them it has been fantastic to have a career where you can fit it all in: professional success, family and self development.

first heard Kristen Walker’s voice before I met her. I was overseas on a business trip and her father sent me an email with a file. Without headphones or speakers, I clicked on the file in cavalier fashion, listening only through my iPad, in the unfortunate acoustic afforded by my hotel room. Her sound was warm, evocative, impassioned, yet seemingly effortless, like breathing. As soon as the track ended I clicked “play”, again and then again after that. I have since listened to all of Kristen’s posted pieces, including her covers of Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness” (2011) and Drake’s “Furthest Thing” (2013) as well as her own “Wind Blows” and several other original pieces shared privately by Kristen and her family. One of these, “Return to Love”, cowritten with Willie Stewart, was described to me as an unfinished concept piece, to be built upon. I learnt a lot about Kristen from that song. Its profound lyrics about love providing redemption in a troubled world and the purity of Kristen’s voice showcased in a bare, honest, unadorned production, resulted in an incredibly moving piece that lingered long on the mind. What emerged clearly then was that Kristen’s music was born of such soulful sincerity and extraordinary talent, that even without exhaustive production, it captivated. The range of Kristen’s music is already supple and unrestrained. Her sound extends across reggae, R&B, hip-hop, jazz and pop. The atmosphere created in some of the tracks on her keenly anticipated debut EP, transported me from my boardroom at work to a chic lounge, in some exclusive corner of a cosmopolitan city where the discerning seek out a poignant sensual-chill vibe, as their respite from the drone of an otherwise ordinary existence. During her short career, Kristen has performed with legendary jazz trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Joan Belgrave, jazz pianist Ian Finkelstein, saxophonist Marcus Elliot and the acclaimed Arturo Tappin & Band. The last year saw Kristen generate serious momentum in development of her artistry. She
made multiple trips to New York, including to record for six weeks at the Magic Shop in New York with Bob “Bassy” Brockmann. She also featured in several live performances around the Caribbean, including with Arturo Tappin & Band at the Tobago Jazz Experience, the Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival and the St. Kitts Music Festival. In November 2015 Kristen performed as an alumni guest of Ebonnie Rowe at Honey Jam. Her cover of Drake’s Hotline Bling was posted on Facebook and within 24 hours racked up over 15,000 views. Kristen rounded out the year at home in Barbados as the youngest performer on stage at Christmas Jazz and sang at the sold-out event, Mahalia’s Corner. I interviewed Kristen in February 2016. I had met with her and her family on various occasions before to discuss legal and business issues around her career. This however was an opportunity for a different kind of conversation with Kristen, solely about her music and who she is as a person. Kristen knew from about age 4 that music was a defining passion for her. Some of her earliest memories of family life, lived against a backdrop of music, are of weekends marked by the playing of her father’s favourite reggae vibes from early in the morning, late into the evening. Another precious memory: a trip to New York City with her family when she was 11. They found themselves by a riverside cafe at the end of a bike ride. A gig was in full swing. Kristen asked her dad whether they would let her sing and, as always, he encouraged her. So she asked the lead vocalist if he knew “Bliss” by Livvi Franc (a British-Barbadian singer-songwriter who was then 18). He didn’t, but Kristen could have a turn at the mic if she wanted. When the set finished Kristen sang “Bliss” acapella. The mic produced an unforgettable echo so that her voice floated across the water and back, competing with music from a riverboat which, she recalls clearly, was soca music. It was an experience that foreshadowed her reality now, as a young artiste grounded in her Caribbean roots but fearless as she shares her music with the world.

Shortly afterward Kristen sang at her first public performance primary school graduation. Two years later at St. Michael’s School she sang in front of 400 students and a year later, at 14, she performed for the entire school of 1000 plus students. Although I pressed her, Kristen does not remember much about audience reaction during these childhood renditions. She says simply that she sang, “just for the joy of it”. Kristen started vocal training with Kelly Cadogan at 15 and continued right through her stint at the Barbados Community College where she earned her associate degree in music. She admits that studying the theory of music, often into the early hours of the morning, was tough. Sagely she comments that she is happy she persevered, because it developed her as a musician and informs her creative process now. Though I already know it from our business discussions, I am reminded that Kristen is not only a prodigious artistic talent, but also an aspirational business woman who is learning to think strategically. She says to me matter of factly that her understanding of musical theory garners a lot more respect from producers and musicians with whom she works and it easily differentiates her from other artistes who can sing, but don’t know theory. I asked Kristen “what really matters to you in life besides your music?” She replied unhesitatingly: being able to be at peace with herself (listening to music and making music help a lot with this); spending time with her immediate family (mum, Suzanne, dad, Chris, brother Josh and grandparents, Laila, Odil, Anne and David); and her relationship with God. As to God and the spirituality of music, Kristen offers, with no prompting, “that’s where the gift came from you know...it’s an honour to be a singer and a performing artist. You have a big job to do. Music is the universal language. Music with a message can be very impactful. Music can heal.” Kristen cites her most important influences as Sade and Drake, with Beyoncé, Bob Marley, The Weeknd, John Mayer, Ella Fitzgerald and Christina Aguilera also in the mix. I challenged her. “If you were banished to a desert island and could take the music of only one artist to listen to for the rest of your life, whose would you take?” She paused, overwhelmed and conflicted by her appreciation of the vast and varied body of music she enjoys. Kristen spent 6 weeks at The Magic Shop in New York last summer. Her expression changes to something like reverence as she explains that to be in the Magic Shop is to feel the aura and presence of the legendary musicians who have recorded there, including David Bowie (his last album), The Rolling Stones and Coldplay. Kristen felt a duty to do something great there. Notwithstanding her fearless aspirational nature, Kristen is governed by humility and an enormous willingness to learn. She credits her success so far not just to her own drive and talent, but to the community of people who support her music - her parents, friends of the family and her online friends and fans who love music. When pressed to select only two celebrities with whom she would most like to have dinner, she agreed to do so as long as the dinner conversations are guaranteed to be “100 percent honest”. Michael Jackson, if he were alive, would be her first choice, because she regards him as “the greatest of all time” and a fascinating “extreme creative”. Audrey Hepburn was a close second, being “an all round beautiful person and someone I could learn a lot from.” Performing live is fundamental to Kristen. Her favourite appearance in 2015 was at the St. Kitts music festival at which Ciara, Jason Derulo, Trey Songz and ASWAD also performed in front of a 6000 strong audience. Kristen longs to see an event like that staged in Barbados. She is excited about performing at Tobago Jazz in April, where Lauryn Hill, J. Cole and Third World will also appear.
Looking ahead Kristen would love to sing with Drake, John Mayer or Coldplay’s Chris Martin and would be delighted to open for any of them in concert. Her dream for the next decade is to share her music worldwide with her on-line fan base and at sellout shows on tour, releasing up to seven albums along the way. In contemplating what she hopes to see thirty years from now, when she looks back on her life, Kristen reveals her very essence. “I would want to know that I gave this art my all, touched people’s hearts with this music, made a mark in the world and a difference; that I didn’t take my loved ones for granted; that I made the most of each opportunity that came my way and that I gave more than I received.”

Mike Evans Mike is a born and bread Barbadian, but has lived and worked overseas, in his full time job he manages and owns a software company Vision Systems Software, which sells Financial, Asset and Supply Chain Software. Like most people he has had other cameras in the past which were mainly for taking family photos and holiday pictures. Mike started taking photography more seriously about 20 months ago and still very much regards himself as a learner looking for ways to improve and evolve. Most of his photographs, especially the landscapes, are taken over the weekend, either early in the morning or around sunset. His favourite photos are landscapes and sports though looking forward to model shots. Andre wears many hats; photographer/ musician/businessman /surfer with a degree in Biology but admits to spending more time in the accounting world. Andre is the grandson of former Governor General of Barbados Sir Winston Scott and he has been taking photographs for about 3 years now and enjoys all types of photography but is mostly drawn to landscapes, waves and the ocean. ‘I love being in the moment in nature and try to visit the east coast at least once a week.’ He has just finished editing his first book titled “The Edge of Bim” which is a collection of some of his favourite seascape images from Barbados. In addition this talented multi-genre artist will be writing a musical score to go along with the book.
