Carlie Ester

Ackeem Francis

Carlie came of age ferociously scribbling through blank notebooks and precociously defying authority. These days she’d rather read the thesaurus than advocate chaos, and probably spends too much of her time running in circles. Carlie purports herself to be an athlete, radio announcer and professional writer - read on and you may find evidence to support at least one of these claims.

Faces by Ackeem Francis is a combination of classic makeup looks and memorable experiences. The art form is an extension of who I am as an individual and something I am very passionate about. I also have a love for fashion and hairstyling that, I believe, goes hand in hand with my craft. Working as makeup artist on the Red Door Lounge fashion shoot incorporated all of my passions!

Tracy Highland Tracy is a trained journalist turned PR consultant who ditched her law and finance studies in favour of a Mass Media degree and never looked back. Her decision has taken her far; her life a collage of interesting adventures-from the news room at Starcom in Barbados to the LA Studios of the late Ray Charles. Today, through her company, JILL Media, she continues to fulfill her passion for writing, PR, social media and people.

Julie Chalbaud I feel truly inspired to work as a photographer with the Living Barbados team who are incredibly creative. We meet such interesting people from all walks of life. The Know Me Love Me charity which I am a volunteer for, held a spectacular gala evening which raised funds for the Barbadian children in need. I also was privileged to meet Andrea the founder of Hatchmans cheeses who blew us all away when we sampled the delectable assortment of her product.

Nigel Wallace With a Masters Degree in Heritage Studies, Nigel started working as a journalist with the Barbados Advocate in 2004. Now, what seems like a lifetime ago, he is the proud CEO of Nigel Wallace Photography (NWP). With a strong passion for people and the stories they tell, Nigel’s work focuses mainly on portraiture, but has over the past few years expanded into still life, products and architecture. Believing that the best camera is the one in your hand, Nigel’s photojournalistic spirit will never be left behind.

Julie Murphy Any opportunity to put pen to paper and play with words is always welcome in my world. Ditto with regards to working with Linda and Rachel and the team at Living Barbados. I could liken the opportunity to a day at polo; intense, exciting and fun. Well done on another great issue!

I

n the Caribbean, we often leave our windows open and doors ajar. The welcoming trade winds that pass through are like ghosts carrying whispers of neighbourly gossip, blessings from the ancestors and on the very rare occasion, fragments of Africa. These winds blow slowly but surely all the way to Barbados, never stopping until they land on a palm frond or kiss your cheek. As a result, our architecture is open wherever possible to the outdoors. This is just one of the many reasons you’ll fall in love with Tradewinds. This outstanding privately owned two-story rental villa is located on the West Coast of Barbados in the exclusive Sandy Lane Estate and managed by West Coast Villas Sotheby’s

International Realty. Touring Tradewinds is like embarking on a luxury tropical safari, the garden is resplendent with bright and colourful alpinias and other striking flowers set on a verdant green canvas of elegant palms and stately trees. Take the main entrance along a bridge above a pond of frisky koi blowing bubbles at the surface of the water, and you find yourself in the heart of the home, the foyer. This expansive space is the ‘sweet spot’ for engaging in lively conversation with friends and family. The foyer serves every artery of the villa and looks out and onto the pool and bar terrace, it is set within the heart of guest bedrooms and it is the shoulder upon which the master bedroom sits.

The furnishings throughout are pre-dominantly in shades of white and cream paired with dark woods, this neutral backdrop is accented with pops of colour or pattern such as the pastel pink coffee table in the sitting room, the seductive red leather ottoman in the den and the chairs upholstered in zebra hide. The four downstairs bedrooms are tasteful and, all have en-suite bathrooms where neutral stone tiles in the shower and clear glass doors lend a light and spacious feeling. Entering through the main door the first bedroom is to your right where a gold post bed with Ivory Coast elephant cushions makes for a cavalier centerpiece. This guest bedroom has the added advantage of leading outdoors to the pool terrace. The bedroom to the left has a garden view with colourful crotons tapping on the window and a view onto the original world-renowned Sandy Lane golf course. A zebra hide ottoman rests at the foot of the bed, and the bedside tables are of a unique vintage glass with extraordinary rustic staining.

Exotic accents like these can be found throughout the villa and include an alligator skin desk, a dark chest of drawers with tribal carvings topped with a head of coral and a pair of antique horse hair calligraphy brushes rested casually on the coffee table. Whether faux or real, animal patterns are woven against an otherwise contemporary Caribbean interior paying homage to the birthplace of the very trade winds the island is so famously known for. The two remaining ground floor bedrooms both have lush garden views; don’t be surprised if you catch a glimpse of a family of local green monkeys frolicking here. Tradewinds is completely ‘teched-out’ with the state-of-theart Control4 security and home entertainment system, operated via the house ipad, which amongst other things allows guests to set the lighting mood throughout the villa. The climate controlled Media Room provides the perfect opportunity to escape from the midday sun. Comfy seats face the large flat screen television with LIVING BARBADOS APRIL - AUGUST 2015

access to Sky TV and the latest box office hits. An Xbox gaming console with controllers and a selection of games is also available. Upstairs is luxuriously devoted entirely as a master suite and study; the bedroom features a walk in closet and two balconies on opposite sides. One overlooks the crystal clear pool and terrace, the other onto the evergreen golf course and both have loungers for sun worship. Inside a four-poster bed is flanked on either side by bedside tables with gold lamps, images of sea shells hang above and at the foot of the bed is a taupe love seat. The master bedroom is cozy and has calming tropical décor. On the terrace adjacent to the stunning pool is the dining area where, a table dressed in crisp linens allows seating for ten under the illumination of an electric candle chandelier. Here you may enjoy such gourmet delights as Blackened Catch of the Day or Prime Surf and Turf. The kitchen is modernly outfitted and fully equipped with a stainless steel fridge and freezer, two ovens, warmers and a central island with its own prep sink. Have no fear if cooking isn’t at the top of your ‘to do’ list during your stay here as the villa is fully staffed with a Chef, Butler, Housekeeper and grounds-man. Also included is the luxury of the Concierge Service at West Coast Villas Sotheby’s International Realty, which can arrange in-house pampering ranging from massages and other spa services to private jewelry viewing and shopping. Opposite the house on the far side of the swimming pool, a bar cabana boasts traditional Barbadian elements such as wood ceiling and floor with a white pickled finish while louvered shutters on three sides allow the breezes to flow through. The glimmer and glam you’d expect on the West Coast defines this space with silver, black and white accessories, a glass globe chandelier and the bar itself which is painted silver and inlaid with mirrored glass. Lounge seating on either side allows the serving station to shine as a sensational centrepiece. This glamorous oasis is where you and your guests will gather to replenish yourselves with fine wine and intellectual chatter after a long day on the links or beautiful beaches. Tradewinds has its own beach cabana on Sandy Lane Beach with access to complimentary beach loungers and umbrellas and an onsite snack/bar. A variety of water sports can be enjoyed here on one of the best beaches on the island. From wherever it is you’ve blown in, Tradewinds is a comfortable retreat on an elegant and secure property. 7 Monday: Premium Banking - love!!

Mondays are always hectic but today was definitely extrabusy! Since we’re jetting off for our big vacation at the end of the week, there are so many things to get done at home and at work before we go. I had meeting after meeting at work and so many errands to deal with in between. Thank goodness I signed up for Premium Banking with Scotiabank. I had to go into the branch during my lunch break to deal with some banking matters but no waiting in line for me. I just went up to the plush Premium Centre and had a cup of tea while my Premium Relationship Officer dealt with everything quickly. So quickly in fact that I was actually able to use my lunch break to get lunch – and goodness knows that hardly ever happens!

Seven Ways in Seven Days that Scotiabank Helps You Discover What’s Possible

advised us on how we could save by bundling a Green Energy loan into our switch mortgage, hence getting the renovation loan at an even lower rate than usual.

Friday: And we’re off - to Or lando!

Going to Disney World has been a dream for the kids – and I must confess for me too. But taking a family of five to Disney isn’t cheap so we had always put it off. So when we saw the new rewards you can get with the Scotiabank Aero Platinum MasterCard, we were excited! It’s just 20,000 Scotiapoints now to fly to New York City, Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Orlando. When we tallied things up, we had enough unused points to cover the cost of two tickets, making our dream family vacation a reality.

Tuesday: Mor tgage Savings - yeah!!

Saturday: Feeling so special

Wednesday: Skybox shopping - so awesome.

Sunday: Bills paid online - now it’s all about the vacation

Great news! We got our Scotiabank switch mortgage approved. I’m feeling very pleased about this. We were able to switch at the special rate they have on right now which must be the lowest in the market – I’ve certainly never had a better offer! We also extended our amortization period so that our repayment is lower, meaning that as of this month, I will have more money in my pocket. That will definitely come in handy for the trip. Just in time – our brand new suitcases arrived today. At first we were worried that we wouldn’t be able to get them since the store didn’t ship to Barbados but we just had them sent to our Skybox and it was no problem. And since we have our credit card with Scotiabank, we get extra discounts on our Skybox service.

Thursday: It’s easy being green.

The children are basically bouncing off the walls with excitement about this trip – thankfully just one more day to go! I have a couple more things that I need to wrap up before we go tomorrow. Today we met with our contractor to discuss our green renovation. We’ve been talking about switching to solar electricity for a while and when we decided to switch our mortgage to Scotiabank, it definitely felt like the right time. Our relationship officer

We’ve arrived in Orlando and have been having a fantastic time. Travel these days can be such a hassle but thanks to the Priority Pass membership we get as Premium Banking clients, it was actually a great experience. We were able to unwind in the VIP lounge at the airport before we departed – there was free wi-fi, magazines and super-comfortable seating. It definitely gave us that relaxed vacation feeling before we even stepped onto the plane.

Day three of vacation. I got up earlier than everyone and paid the bills this morning since that was one errand I didn’t get around to before we left. But since Scotiabank has the widest range of payees for online banking, it was easy. In about ten minutes, I’d paid the light, water, cable and phone bills plus the car insurance and even the children’s private school fees for next term. Scotiabank just makes my life so much easier in so many ways. Onward to the Magic Kingdom!

BACK in ACTION! Photos by Lisa Davis, Andre Williams, Jade Greggory and the Barbados Polo Club

Ahhhh Polo, the romanticism, the drama, the passion… the parties!!

A

s the Barbados Polo Club celebrates 50 years at Holders Polo Field this year the social scene on the island has certainly been dominated by the sport during the first three months of 2015. With four tours and over 30 matches played up to publication the season took on renewed energy this year with new sponsors, exciting promotions and a rejuvenated sparkle both on and off the field. Indeed the sport has long been associated with the ‘who’s who’ on the island and it’s popularity has gained further traction with visitors seeking lively afternoon activities and locals vying for the paparazzi. Two of the most exciting tours have definitely been the Diamonds International Battle of the Sexes and the ICBL/ UNNA Cheshire tour. Breathing new life into the Battle of the Sexes tour, past sponsor and co-creator of the tour Diamonds International was back in the game this year, bringing one of it’s prestigious brands Bulgari by its side.

The Diamonds Men took on the Virgin Women with gusto and came out roaring with a solid win at the opening match at Holders, the ladies quickly were back on top with two consecutive wins, holding the men down going into the final day… the final match went to the men 5-3 to draw the match and ensure that next years re-match will be sure to thrill. Of course while most of the action was on the field, the clubhouse scene was definitely the place to be. First class cuisine was served up by visiting chefs, Scott Ames and Larry Rogers of Cin Cin while the action at the bar was divided equally between Pimms, Cocktails and champagne, to say nothing of the Bulgari that was on display for the ladies. The Cheshire tour brought out the Brits and once again a good time was had by all. This friendly rivalry has been ongoing for some 40 years and spectatorship was strong with the crowd cheering the Barbados team to victory. While the matches were highly competitive, the final match was a 12 goal (for reference most matches in Barbados are 4 goal); off the field the crowds were treated to sweet delights (Green Monkey Chocolatier are our favorite friends), rum cocktails and high fashion flair dominated with dynamic hats and glamour as ladies vied for prizes from Diamonds International, Always Summer and UNNA Luxury Resorts and Residences. Polo season ends in April but this season is sure to be talked about for months to come…. just remember what happens at polo…usually ends up in print!

Port Ferdinand Marina, part of the Unna Luxury Resorts & Residences management brand, is located on the Barbados Riviera and is the only inland marina on the island. The name 13˚/59˚ denotes the latitude and longitude points for Barbados and seems fitting for a restaurant in a marina setting as these points are of utmost importance to sailors. Ian Morrison of Morrison Associates and Michael Gomes of Michael Gomes Associates designed the restaurant with furnishings and interiors by Guillaume Meniaud of CID Design. The interior is a lesson in refined luxury and understated sophistication, decorated in a muted neutral palette with accents of polished wood, akin to a club lounge on a luxury yacht. The wine wall is a beautiful temperature controlled glass cabinet, specially commissioned for the restaurant, which affords not only a great way to store but also to display their premium red wines. Fine crisp white linens dress tables that are simply accented with glass candles and a branch of stag horn coral and, as each course is presented in its own unique vessel, there are no place settings. At the helm of the kitchen is Executive Head Chef Andrew Turner who hails from Dorset, England and Executive Sous Chef Roz Allen from Holywood, Northern Ireland. Andy was trained in London under Marco Pierre White and later ran his own fine dining restaurant in the Sydney Opera House. He travelled to Japan to study sushi techniques and eventually went on head Michelin star restaurants in Ireland. Chef Roz trained at a number of prominent Irish restaurants including The Tannery in Waterford and went on to work at a number of Michelin star restaurants in the UK. The double-chef act was instantly charmed by Barbados and with the sheer profusion and quality of its produce as their approach from the start was to create a luxury, high end dining experience that sources as much produce from Barbados as possible. Traditional Barbadian ingredients are transformed with modern cookery techniques and elevated to an international level of cuisine with creativity and flair that are as beautiful to look at, as they are to eat. Dining at 13˚/59˚ is elegant yet informal. The first part of the meal is a series of snacks and sharing plates, often served by the chefs themselves to provoke discussion and whet the appetite. Subsequent courses may showcase the freshest fish, local pork, goat or rabbit followed by dessert, which they ‘take very seriously’. Patrons may choose from the ‘Short Menu’, a mere five courses! The ‘Long Menu’ is a ten-course extravaganza of tasting dishes, a Vegetable Tasting menu option is also available and the chef is also pleased to accommodate special dietary requests. Diners may find familiar ingredients such as the humble salt fish transformed into a paper-thin cracker with a delicate topping of cucumber, lime: a modern twist on a Bajan classic playing up on the combined flavours of pickled cucumber and ceviche. The fish is frozen, thinly sliced and then dried to crisp in a dehydrator. Bajan golden crab with celery and melon was cool, light and flavourful and cleansed the palette for Kingfish cooked in coconut oil with lobster and a ginger broth. ndrea Power is an impressive woman. Her resume alone speaks for itself. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Sociology and a Master’s in International Economics and Trade. She has worked as the Chief Research Officer in the Prime Minister’s Office and is currently a Consultant at the Caribbean Development Bank. If you ask her about her greatest professional achievement though, she won’t talk politics or numbers. She will sum it up in two words – Hatchman’s Cheeses, her latest venture and heartfelt tribute to the man who has most impacted her life, her father, Asquith “Hatchman” Power. Andrea makes cheese. Not just any cheese either. Her assortment of goat cheeses, mozzarella, brie, epoisses, gunbolt, cheddar and camembert are not just rivaling her imported competitors, they are being reviewed by some of the world’s elite as Andrea as a little girl better. Her cheeses have the reputation of being richer and creamier, their taste and texture sought after by some of the top restaurants in Barbados. She is adamant about using milk from local cow and goat farmers in her process and is quick to praise the quality of their milk as a key component to the taste of her cheeses. Her connection to the local farming community runs deep. She comes from a family of farmers. Her first memories after moving to Barbados from Canada with her parents at the age of five were of her grandfather’s dairy farm at Lower Estate Plantation. Even after her parents’ divorce she continued to spend summers there and the rest of the year with her mother who ran a school canteen and raised chickens and pigs. In fact it is her mother that she credits with giving her that drive and indomitable spirit, since there was no struggle her mother couldn’t overcome. “My father ran the family dairy. I was raised on raw cow’s milk and we would always have fresh cream. My father would

Cheese & Wine Pairing with Platinum Wines By Celeste Pontifex-McGougan

Marble Cutting board available from Dwellings. Hatchman’s Cheeses Gun Bolt is slightly salty and creamy with a rustic fruity flavour. We decided on a rustic style red from the South of France called Faugeres. This is a fruity wine which is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan. It is intensly fruity with no oak ageing so very forward and velvety in texture. A tannic red would clash with a salty cheese, so fruity is best.

Hatchman’s Cheeses Brie is mild, slightly chalky and decadently gooey with a strong flavour. A creamy, subtly oaked Chardonnay is what we chose for this cheese. The Montes Alpha Chardonnay has some light oak aging and undergoes a secondary fermentation which enhances the ‘buttery’ notes in the wine. It is full flavoured and elegant and pairs beautifully with the weight of the Brie.

There’s nothing that pairs better with Goat Cheese than Sauvignon Blanc. For this Goats Cheese with guava from Hatchman’s Cheeses we recommend something young, full of zest and bone dry to cut through the tangy nature of the cheese. The 2014 Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand ticks all of those boxes. New to the Platinum Wines portfolio.

The Crottin cheese from Hatchman’s Cheeses is a more mature Goat Cheese with a slighty nutty complexity. It is denser and fuller so we have chosen a Pouilly Fume from the Loire Valley in France to pair with it. Also a Sauvignon Blanc but slightly different in style with smoky, flinty notes which it gets from the soil in the Loire Valley of France. It is typically a fruitier style and a little rounder hence our reasons for pairing with this ‘heavier’ style of goat cheese.

Sue Thomas-Richardson collecting ‘The Worlds Best Interior Design Award’ at Grovenor House Hotel in London

Sue on site

Barbadian Born & Bred Jenny Blanc’s Design Director, Sue Thomas - Richardson

In 2002 award winning interior design company Jenny Blanc, set up their first office in Barbados from which to administer the increasing number of projects they were being commissioned to work on in the Caribbean. In December 2011 the company opened their highly successful lifestyle showroom in St. James which has become a target destination for visitors looking for beautiful, original furnishings for their homes. Barbados is a central hub for the rest of the Caribbean and the showroom serves to represent Jenny Blanc’s design style to the many holiday homeowners on the island. Key to the success of their expansion into this area, has been Barbadian – born, Sue Thomas-Richardson, Design Director for the company, whose indispensable wealth of local knowledge and expertise ensured that the beautiful interiors they designed were perfectly suited for the tropical climate. Sue comes from a very old Barbadian family, her ancestors having arrived on the island in the 1600’s as settlers of the New World. Her family all have a strong artistic leaning. Her mother, Audrey Thomas, internationally renowned and respected as a horticulturalist, is the shining light of the gold medals awarded over many years for the famous Barbados exhibits at the Chelsea Flower Show. Audrey was awarded the Barbados Centennial Honour for her services to horticulture on the island and this year, at the eminent age of 92, she opened her beautiful garden to the public again to raise funds for the Barbados Horticultural Society. Two of Sue’s brothers own and manage Growing Things, one of the leading landscape companies in Barbados. Sue was educated at Queens College in Barbados and in her teens threw javelin for her school and later for Barbados. She held the Caribbean record for several years. In the 1970’s she joined her parents on an extended trip to London and decided to take the opportunity to further her education in the UK, finally training as a nurse and qualifying as an SRN in 1978. Returning home in the 1980’s, Sue worked for several years in the highend travel industry for a British company specialising in luxury villa holidays on the West Coast of Barbados. She was based in the offices of real estate company, Alleyne & Aguilar, now Altmans Real Estate. She started her career in interior design when she was offered a job by Heather Aguilar-Swan, one of the most prominent designers on the island. Here she learnt all the essential basics of interior design and assisted on large hotel projects, private residences and commercial properties on the island. During this period, she tuned into her natural artistic talent and gained valuable expertise on designing in the tropics. She developed a love of paint techniques and in 1987 returned to London to study at the Leonard Pardon School in Knightsbridge. In 1990, she moved full-time to the UK as a freelance designer/decorator for interior designers both in the UK and Barbados. Sue was also a key member of the team

at Holbein Collection in the UK, a leading manufacturer of bespoke curtain accessories. A painting commission introduced 1959 Su e on the Sue to Jenny Blanc and thus an enduring beach design partnership was created. In addition to the awards of World’s Best Interior Design for a Private Residence for a UK property in 2012 and Best International Interior Design for a Port St. Charles, Barbados Apartment in 2007, Jenny Blanc has won four awards for the design team’s work in the Caribbean. As Design Director, Sue’s knowledge and creativity were invaluable in these winning projects in some of the most prestigious areas of the island including the West Coast, Port St. Charles, Royal Westmoreland Estate and Apes Hill. Sue is still Bajan to the core and very proud of her Barbadian heritage. Through her work she is very keen to promote the talents and expertise of her fellow Bajans. Many of the design projects include pieces of furniture she has designed and had made locally by skilled artisans in Barbados. Jenny Blanc is currently developing an exclusive range of Barbadian made furniture which will be available throughout the Caribbean and beyond. In 2014 the company created the Jenny Blanc Design Scholarship to enable design students from the Barbados Community College to fine tune their skills at a London college and gain invaluable hands-on experience at both their London and Barbados showrooms. The first scholarship winner has spent 6 months working at the London showroom and passed her exams in computer aided design with flying colours. She is now using her new skills and experience in the Jenny Blanc Barbados showroom. West Coast Project

his year the location was at the recently opened and hugely popular restaurant and event location Lancaster Great House, managed by none other than host extraordinaire John Chandler and his wife Rain. Patrons were greeted at the door by hostesses dressed as ethereal nymphs in flowing Grecian style dresses, their hair decorated with feathers and butterflies by Anja Wiles and long, colourful eyelashes and beautiful bejeweled eye makeup by Janine Cooper. They set the tone for the evening as they handed guests bubbly cocktails on arrival, each with a gold butterfly decoration on the glass bearing a number for a special prize to be drawn later in the evening. The KMLM charity was well attended by elegantly dressed ladies and dapper gentlemen who came out to raise funds and support a worthy cause. The charity currently has ten schools in Barbados that receive their support where schoolbags full of supplies, donated to children in need, is the main focus of the charity. Additionally surplus funds have been allocated to purchase other items including school shoes, printer paper for the school and even funded medical assistance that impacted a child’s ability to attend classes.
