Contributors Tracy Highland Tracy is a trained journalist turned PR consultant who ditched her law and finance studies in favour of a Mass Media degree and never looked back. Her decision has taken her far; her life a collage of interesting adventures-from the news room at Starcom in Barbados to the LA Studios of the late Ray Charles. Today, through her company, JILL Media, she continues to fulfill her passion for writing, PR, social media and people.

Alex Jackson Alex takes a genuine and passionate approach to capturing his subjects and is heavily inspired by art, fashion and travel. He aspires to capture timeless moments with striking detail, and will stop at nothing to get the perfect shot. His photo genius can be seen on pages 48 -51 where he captured model Georgia Salamat on the beach in the swimwear fashion spread titled ‘Tropical Escape’.

Ansari Muhajiri

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! My passion is making life look beautiful, whether it’s capturing the heart and soul of the Caribbean people, lifestyle, architecture, food or fashion. It should all be done to elevate and glorify the subject. This has been my journey for the past twenty years as a photographer. I am living and loving my dream.

Julie is well known by our readers for her quick wit, bright smile and love of all things wordy. Her background includes events, retail, marketing, publishing and that one time she was a hand model for Cartier (ok that’s a lie). She delights in working with the Living Barbados team and wants to remind Linda and Rachel that they owe her a night out…just putting that out publicly ;) Our response: Julie, what about Friday night?

Carlie came of age ferociously scribbling through blank notebooks and precociously defying authority. These days she’d rather read the thesaurus than advocate chaos, and probably spends too much of her time running in circles. Carlie purports herself to be an athlete, radio announcer and professional writer - read on and you may find evidence to support at least one of these claims.

Living Barbados was thrilled to have Ansari write the story on legendary golfer Ian Woosnam. It seems this famous restauranter has a hidden talent not only for serving up the island’s most authentic East Indian cuisine at Sitar Restaruant, but also for writing a well told story. Ansari is also a keen golfer and family man.

Don Jordan An Honours graduate of The Ontario College of Art and Design as a graphic designer. Enjoyment of photography as a self taught hobby, swiftly grew into a passion. His approach to image making was to employ his graphic design skills, composition, colour, style and concept, resulting in imagery that is ultimately designed rather than simply captured. He has produced many award winning images across various catagories including real estate and architectural, landscape, people, corporate and lifestyle, food and wine.

THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE AT

BONITA BAY

18 LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2015 - APRIL 2016

F

rom the moment you enter Bonita Bay you relax. It inspires peace, a sense of calm, and an appreciation for beauty. The new luxury beachfront development, consisting of Villa Bonita and Villa Bon, is nestled in a prime elevated position in Prospect Bay, St. James that affords it spectacular views of the West coast. Construction on Villa Bon, which is available for sale, is expected to start soon. Its sister, Villa Bonita has been recently completed and sits peacefully overlooking the crystal clear waters of the warm Caribbean Sea. With over 9,200 square feet of living space, Villa Bonita is elegant and luxurious; a beautiful symphony of clean lines, white marble, Italian fixtures and an ocean inspired palette that somehow manages to be cool and sophisticated, yet cozy at the same time. Its closeness to the ocean is unique. It’s one of the few West coast homes in Barbados that can boast of wide, unencumbered views of the sea from almost every room. And it isn’t a distant view. The waves appear as though they are within reach. The subtle sound of the ocean plays an enchanting soundtrack throughout the villa. It’s quite simply beautiful. “It’s a fascinating villa. The architect Juan Martinez has a very different style. You are as close to the water as you can get, but elevated so it’s completely private,” explained Paul Alleyne of View from the deck

Who wouldn’t want to sit here and enjoy the spectacular Caribbean sunset?

Private pool area

Villa Bonita is a shining example of the very best in luxury beachfront property available on Barbados’ Platinum Coast. The proximity to the water is unique and very few west coast homes can boast such fantastic vistas from almost every room.

Alleyne Real Estate, sale and rental agents for the villa. “The outside living areas are extremely private including the swimming pool.” he added. The pool he speaks of is a gorgeous, edgeless salt water pool with a waterfall that sits in the centre of a private courtyard that is the heart of the property. The courtyard is a wonderful space for relaxing or entertaining. It connects the ground floor living spaces of the villa including the incredible TMI Italia kitchen, described as a chef’s dream, which opens directly onto the space. The kitchen features state of the art Gaggenau and Seimens appliances. Just off the kitchen is the laundry room and fully equipped housekeeper’s quarters. “The interior design has only just been completed, and we expect to welcome our very first booking in early December,” added Alleyne Real Estate’s Chief Executive, Shane Johnson. Villa Bonita’s interior design was brought to fruition by the uber talented team at Archer’s Hall Design Centre. “Because of the immediate proximity to the sea, we were able to push the designs to really capture and envelop the senses and sounds of

Living room is beautifully styled

the ocean.” said Design Director, Terri Archer. “The desire was to create an ambiance of relaxed, luxurious interiors while allowing a complete sense of privacy,” she further explained. As you move through the home you are soothed with neutral colours and subdued silvers and mauves, brought to life with unique ocean themed accent pieces and touches of metallic tones. In the foyer a gilded flower stands out against the warm coral rendered walls. On a bathroom counter a twisted piece of blue glass mimics driftwood. As you sit on the downstairs patio you are shaded by a large canvas in the shape of a stingray. Climbing the stairs to the upper floor you are preceded by a flock of metal seagulls frozen in immortality against the clean neutral backdrop of the upper floor walls. It’s brilliantly done; a blend of modern and classic executed impeccably. The master bedroom is a masterpiece, designed so the room’s occupant rarely loses sight of the surf. You awaken to a stunning view of the ocean in a room decorated in naturally occurring seascape hues with touches of silver. The sleeping area opens

directly onto a private balcony with glass railings that ensure no impediments to your view. The master bathroom features a large white stand-alone tub and a glass enclosed shower set against a wall of Italian mosaic tiles, both with spectacular ocean views. Large his and her walk-in-closets, with custom designed wardrobes by Belligotti, Italy, complete this magnificent space. Of the other five bedrooms, three, located on the upper floor, also feature ensuite bathrooms custom designed by Italian company Mildue with fittings by Treemme Siena Italy. The two “cottage” bedrooms on the ground floor share a beautifully appointed bathroom also by Mildue with Siena Italy fittings. The dining room is a tranquil space overlooking the ocean. Water colours dot the walls around an elegant twelve-seater table and a gentle sea breeze flows through the room. The same peaceful feeling permeates the main living room, which opens onto a large outdoor patio seemingly on the water’s edge. It’s decorated with plush cream furniture, a cozy rug, metal softened by pieces of driftwood and coral straight from the same ocean

that serves as an incredible backdrop for this wide open space. Enjoy a tropical sunset while relaxing on the patio or take the private staircase that leads down to the golden sands of the picturesque beach below. If you are into water sports, there is a wet room on the same level as the beach for easy cleaning and storage of your watersport gear. Whatever you do Villa Bonita ensures an experience like no other. The 1700 square foot living space on the lower level also boasts a private cinema. The huge screen, cinema lighting, surround sound and distressed leather furniture beg you to settle in and enjoy your favourite movie. The lower level also features a gym that affords you a sweeping view of the ocean through two large glass windows as you work out. The villa is fully secure with a monitored state of the art security system, first floor night security shutters, barrier gates and external road security louvres. In addition, all structural elements, windows and doors are made to withstand hurricane force winds.

How’s Your Financial Health? Are you in great financial shape? If not, take heart - it’s easier than you think to achieve excellent financial health with these tips from Scotiabank.

Establish Financial Goals Where would you like to be financially? Would you like to improve cash flow, raise your credit rating, or save a certain amount? Setting goals gives you something specific to work towards. Do A Financial Check Up Where are you right now? Do a financial checkup by listing current expenses, which will show where your money goes each month, and reveal where to trim costs. Create, and stick to, a realistic Monthly BudgetPlan for all monthly expenses, as well as for the little unexpected ‘extras’ – then track them to stay on target. Use Scotiabank online banking and your debit card to help with tracking, as you get easily accessible records with both. Manage Your Credit Many of your expenses can impact your credit rating, including mortgages, car loans, hire purchase agreements, credit card and utility bills. For optimum credit health, pay all bills on time (or set up automated Scotiabank payments if you’re forgetful). If you run up higher credit card bills than you can pay monthly, use your Scotiabank debit card instead to limit what you can spend. Avoid ‘Bad Debt’ ‘Bad debt’ accumulates and provides you with no future benefits. Examples of this include cash advances on your credit card (as interest is charged from the day of the advance), or borrowing money to purchase luxuries that will have no future financial value. Manage ‘Good Debt’ ‘Good debt’ means borrowing to invest in your future, as with education or real estate loans. Your good debt can work even better for you. For example, a mortgage is a significant expense that often creates cash flow challenges. Applying for or switching to a Scotiabank mortgage can help, as you can amortize for up to 30 years, significantly lowering your monthly payments. You can also reduce interest costs by prepaying up to 15% of the original amount of your mortgage every year without penalty.

Switching to a Scotiabank mortgage offers many benefits, and the equity in your home can help you access additional funds to consolidate debt or improve your home. Scotiabank even covers switching costs up to a value of $30,000 (conditions apply). Plan For Unexpected Challenges You know the ones – serious illnesses or unanticipated education fees and travel expenses. Rather than raid your savings, consider ScotiaLine, a flexible, revolving personal line of credit that gives access to funds at any time within a pre-established credit limit. There’s no need to apply for a loan each time once you are approved, and interest is only paid on the money you’ve accessed. You also need not make monthly loan repayments – just service the monthly interest on the loan and pay back the principal as you wish.

With these tips, you’re on your way to your best financial health ever. Talk to Scotiabank today to discover what’s possible.

I

f only Jules Verne’s fictitious ‘Phileas Fogg’ had collected trinkets on his trip around the world in eighty days and displayed them in a secret nook. If only Fogg had sought refuge on the Platinum Coast after winning his risky gamble, to dally his days musing over a perfect view of the glassy Caribbean Sea. If you’ve been to The Cliff Beach Club, you may wonder if this suggestive tale of an adventurer’s retreat were so fictitious after all. The Cliff Beach Club is unique in that it is a half-century-old house that today is modernly outfitted with ancient treasures. This isn’t the type of beach club where you lounge in a cabana; in this club, the entire roof is a cabana, from which hangs a Turkish lantern chandelier in one corner and a metal Flash Gordon space ship chasing a UFO in another. Owner Brian Ward, designed and curated the space with the help of his son Barnaby, who describes designing The Cliff Beach Club as a “passion project, built with a lot of love, dedication and attention to detail.” Approximately three years in the planning, the project started small enough and then simply exploded into something much bigger and the team spent years agonizing over the smallest details. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves! After all, we adventurers must start with a map… or at the very least directions. To find the exclusive Cliff Beach Club, just head to The Cliff in Derrick’s, St. James. On entering the valet hands you not a nondescript ticket but a playing card to identify your car. Whether you come up Aces or Spades it is a nifty touch! Turn to the right and follow the hand painted sign on the wall then left through the mysterious blue doorway where the hostess will greet you with a smile at the bright red reception desk.

The view on enter ing is a jaw dropping panorama of br illiant shades of blue that str etch as far as the eye can see. The theatr e-sty le dining ar ea looks over this 1 80 degr ee vista of the sea wher e, in the evening, the backdrop tur ns into r iotous colours of the sunset, pinks, r eds, oranges and purples like an abstr act painting hanging above the inky blue ocean. Before being seated, you may weave past mermaid maidenheads, a wooden shark bearing real teeth, a free standing ship’s helm, a giant brass tuba, and something that speaks to the adventurer’s spirit: a print of a late 1800s painting by Henri Rousseau, a prowling tiger that bears an uncanny resemblance to Rudyard Kipling’s 1894 creation ‘Shere Khan’. If you’re a creature of the night yourself, you’re in for an equally exotic journey. The décor in the bar area is a nod to the continent of Africa. The curved glass ceiling is lit blue like an exotic aquarium, and adorning these walls are movie posters hand painted on flour-sack canvases. These posters originated in Ghana, and are a testament to the tradition of roving “theatres” where movies roamed from village to village via mobile projectors. As is the practice before the movies show, the posters were painted and displayed as advertising. The classic Jackie Chan and James Bond posters featured at the bar are surrounded by a fan of metal spears and what could only deserve the title of a “throne”: an ornate chair made of animal horn and hide. This piece was created, not by a triumphant warrior, but by an artisan who made this chair the last in his line. Like a lonely king, this Head Chef at the regal masterpiece has no successor. Cliff Beach Club Jérémy Dupire The illustrious Beach Club team hunted for these eclectic curios and other pieces globally. They are proud of what they have achieved, bringing a high end product to Barbados to keep it competitive in the international market and with a goal to put Barbados on the map by invigorating the tourism product, it’s clear they didn’t hold back on the perseverance or the perspiration. Even the tables you’ll dine on have a history as they were repurposed from the siding of an old chattel house and refinished to a honed perfection. Other pieces of this house grace the walls in the bathrooms, now painted a beautiful cyan blue and it’s clear that blood, sweat and tears and a creative imagination have gone into this passionate project, this celebration of the spirit of adventure. The Cliff has long been known for their amazing chefs including Executive Chef Paul Owens and Beach Club Head Chef Jérémy Dupire as well as a legendary Lounge Manager and Beach Club Mixologist “borrowed” from The Cliff, ‘Papa’ Jules Gualdoni, along with his Bar Manager Harold Harper. This passion is also evident in the staff’s pride of their workplace, and

the quality products that are on offer. The same excellent service the Cliff is known for is instilled in the Beach Club, as General Manager Peter “Huggy” Harris oversees operations of both, while Brian Tatem handles the management of the Beach Club. The menu offers a delightful trip around the globe that may start with a seaside foray of a Crab & Home Smoked Bacon Club Sandwich, Octopus Carpaccio or Gratinated Clams with Parsley and Garlic Butter. Or you could venture through the menu and open your taste buds to the Chargrilled Prime Rib Eye, or even the Rack of Lamb with Ratatouille and Mash finished sweetly with a Chocolate Fondant or the Beach Club Lemon Tart. While The Cliff Beach Club holds the same high standards as its sister restaurant, it presents a relaxed atmosphere driven by its rare décor and an adventurous day-to-night menu that is both satisfying and flavorfully diverse. The Cliff Beach Club is open Tuesday to Sunday, with Sundays highly recommended for the family roast. Order ahead and choose Roast Prime Rib of Beef or Boneless Leg of Lamb with sides of Yorkshires, Confit Vegetables or Pigs in a Blanket for your party. Stick around ‘til the evening for live music and new entertainment every week. Friday and Saturday nights are well spent lounging by the bar with good company, sipping a signature Sage & Pineapple Mojito or a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. Under the night’s curtain, The Beach Club is lit with warm reds and cool blues and the backdrop of the sea rolling lazily will remind you why you adventured here in the first place. Oh…before you leave for home, be sure to take a stop in the bathrooms. There’s a story narrated over the speakers inside. See if you can guess what it is…

Visit The Cliff Beach Club in St. James between 11:00am and 12:00pm or make your reservation by calling (246) 432-0797.

tep inside the newly opened Archer’s Hall Design Centre at Millhouse Complex and you’ll appreciate just how visionary the talented team of sisters-in-law Monique and Terri Archer are. Having worked with property owners and clients from their Speightstown showroom for over 12 years; providing savvy shoppers with distinctly unique pieces from around the world, the ladies recognized the opportunity to expand their brand and bring their keen eye for design to a wider cross section of the Barbadian public. Their style is a blend of classic and contemporary but always with a focus on staying true to the West Indian way of life, and this effortless beauty lies at the core of the brand philosophy. As a result the redesigned floor space is refreshing and inspiring; timeless pieces

blend with accents inspired by nature; shells, ocean scenes, silk orchids and neutral tones. Bolder statement pieces also stand out as a nod to the eclectic side of interior design and are a reminder that being playful is always au courant. The real emphasis is on the use of light and lighting. Lamps, sconces and eye catching canvases adorn the walls and side tables, taking advantage of the natural light available via the high windows. The chandeliers in particular command attention; hues of rose and aqua, pewter and mixed materials drop dramatically from the high ceilings in a manner that is more akin to art than illumination. The inspiration for the space comes very much from the Caribbean way of living ‘inside out’; the building is bright and airy and the furniture focuses on outdoor spaces. Dining pieces are elegant yet eclectic, silk planters frame the rooms and the chandeliers prove they can do more than ‘light up a room’; they can transform it. The lines focus on quality, durability and longevity but with bold design and modern elements that can easily be considered for indoor living areas. Indeed, the quality of the furniture is spectacular. Top designers such as Tommy Bahama and Lexington Home Brands marry design with longevity. Fabrics are bold and bright, the finishes well considered for style and functionality. These pieces aren’t simply designed, they’ve been engineered and they look and feel amazing. Keeping the formula set by the previous tenants, the showroom also houses the recently launched Open Kitchen eatery and The Wine Cave to provide clients with a unique experience that mirrors the ‘life-style’ shift in how we shop. The key to the bold new look was to fully embrace the use of light to showcase the new lines; the presence of the eatery and The Wine Cave provide a sophisticated bistro-chic atmosphere which compliments the overall style and provides a beautifully symbiotic relationship between art, design and ambiance. Even island life is fast paced in today’s world and twenty-first century home owners know that interior design is a methodical affair but also very much a social one; this formula for a relaxed shopping ambiance is a winning one. Clientele can come, pour over design ideas while they have a coffee or lunch, take their time and experience the unique pieces. It’s one thing to see a beautiful piece of art on a wall and think how lovely it would be in one’s home; it’s another thing to spend an afternoon browsing, eating and enjoying the companionship of the art, chandeliers, furniture and accessories to understand why they belong there. And this was indeed the vision behind the new store; to provide shoppers with an ambient stress free environment; one where the ideal visit would be to come, shop, relax and go home with a unique piece of art, a new collection to enhance their home expansion or just some candles for the bathroom; but at the end of the day it’s a memorable experience. Unlike many retail stores on the island, Archer’s Hall Design Centre can provide clientele with many custom options for lighting, art and furniture. Their team of sales associates are well versed in the various interior design alternatives that can make living spaces unique to your tastes and suited to your home. Depending on the lines, lighting can be customized by finish, the colours of the glass and even design whereas furnishings can be carefully crafted with fabric selections, wood finishes or even nail heads which can add an elegance or a rustic island charm to modern pieces. This can really allow customers the opportunity to create something distinctive for their homes, incorporating not just a piece of furniture but really applying interior design ideas to their spaces.

PERSON OF INTEREST

Ian “Woosie” Woosnam By Ansari Muhajiri Photos by Phil Inglis and Don Jordan

I

an Woosnam’s love affair with Barbados started way back in 1983 on a holiday stay at the recommendation of a friend. Amidst the hectic life of a professional golfer at the peak of his career and enroute to greatness, he fell in love with this beautiful 166 square miles of paradise; that he now calls his second home. Many years later in the early nineties Ian built a family home here at Royal Westmoreland and since then spent the better half of every year here with his wife Glendryth, son Daniel and daughters Ami and Rebecca. Twenty years later the association with Barbados and its friendly people and confines remain as strong as ever. We are truly fortunate to have such a famous international sports personality and an even nicer human being to be in our midst for most of each calendar year. Ian was born into a humble farming family in Oswestry, Wales. As a young boy he was very hands-on in the farm, working with his father and brothers. Amongst his exploits was driving his father’s tractor and helping with the milking of cows. He developed some serious arm and upper body strength as a result of this and at the tender age of 8 he entered a boxing tournament and left a serious trail of destruction in his wake. So much so that at the same event the following year there were no takers to challenge the young champion. The organizer of the tournament actually laced up some gloves and got on his knees to challenge him and was also flattened. Ian (right) and his brother Keith were young boxers. Ian beat everyone at age 8 and the next year they were no takers.

PGA European Seniors Tour 2015 Welsh Seniors at Celtic Manor

Over 50 worldwide wins, World number one for 50 straight weeks, 8 time Ryder Cup player and winning Ryder Cup captain in 2006. European Tour Order of Merit winner in 1987 and 1990, European Tour Player of the year for those same years and the jewel in his crown, the most storied of all majors – 1991 Masters Champion. Ian was very much into his sports at school and less about academia so his father leaned him onto a sport he thought he might excel at; Golf. He started playing golf regularly at Llanymynech club and enjoyed it almost immediately. He left school at the age of 16 and worked at a members golf club. He started in the pro shop but then moved in to golf course maintainance affording him more time to practice and play. After two years of honing his skills Ian turned Professional. He embarked on beating the world, borrowing his father’s Volkswagen caravanette to get him started. It took three attempts for him to qualify for the European Tour after which he started making small amounts of prize money. His main objective then was to get enough money for gas for the VW to get him from tournament to tournament. He lived in the van, eating cold baked beans and drowning his frustrations in a few pints; ok maybe more than a few pints as he always readily admits he enjoys a good drink or two. He has always been an exquisite ball striker with his self taught swing being better than most. However, his early downfall was his temperament. After a few years as a golf nomad and just as he was about to call it a career and take a golf professionals job at a golf club, he learnt an invaluable lesson from a Ryder Cup Player Gordon Brand Sr, whilst at a tournament with him at the Ikoyi club in Nigeria. “After Brand shot two rounds under par I was standing next to him on the practice ground and he was spraying the ball in every direction yet he did not seem worried. Meanwhile I was hitting everything shot perfect. Lesson learnt! it was not about good shots or bad shots. It was and still is about the lowest score. There are no pictures on the scorecard”. He was to excel in multiples after that. The resume is outstanding; over 50 worldwide wins, World number one for 50 straight weeks, 8 time Ryder Cup player and winning Ryder Cup captain in 2006 at The K Club in Dublin with record setting score of 18 ½ to 9 ½, winning every session; European Tour Order of Merit winner in 1987 and 1990, European Tour Player of the year for those same years and the jewel in his crown, the most storied of all majors – 1991 Masters Champion.

Enough about his golf accolades, the Woosie I and most of his bajan friends know is a caring, humble, fun-loving, family man. His travails in golf carried him from continent to continent but where he is completely stress-free and relaxed is when he comes back “home” to our Rock. A very private man who enjoys sitting on his deck overlooking the emerald waters of the Caribbean sea sipping on an ice-cold Banks, listening to “ I am a Bajan” by Rupee playing in the background. Yes this Masters Champion has an extensive playlist of Bajan Soca to the delight of his numerous UK guests that visit him every year. I was very fortunate, being an average but avid golfer myself, to have a game with this legend of the game about 15 years ago. What endeared me to the man was not his golfing prowess but his genuine nature. He couldn’t care less about how good a golfer you were, whether you came from wealth or not, whether you were black, brown, white or yellow. It

was what you were like as a person. He gravitates to similar traits as his own. Thus grew a friendship that lasts until today. We play a lot of golf together and during one such game he invited me to caddy for him in the 2014 Masters Tournament which has to be the crowning glory for any golf enthusiast. That is the person Ian Woosnam is and always will be. He has made many friends from the several golfing communities in Barbados including Royal Westmoreland, Sandy Lane, Barbados Golf Club and Apes Hill Club Barbados’ newest Championship course and luxury residential community. Despite playing the game for a living, recently becoming a fixture on the Champions Tour by winning the Insperity Championship, he enjoys getting out to play with his bajan “pals”, more for the camaraderie than the enjoyment of beating us all like a drum! He also is quite liberal with how much he helps fellow golfers in the respective clubs and can be seen

helping many on the practice ranges of the clubs he might be playing at. The awe struck recipients of such advice seem to have puzzled looks on their faces as if to say “why would this legend talk to me!” Woosie hasn’t changed much from his humble beginnings despite his tremendous success. Ian is also very instrumental in raising funds for various worthy causes through his personal charity foundation, notably a golf tournament run every year at Archerfield Golf Club in Scotland. This tournament is over subscribed every year and continues to grow from strength to strength. Closer to our shores Woosie is assisting in raising funds for the development of the Barbados Diabetes Centre for the Barbados Diabetes Foundation. He is a very keen supporter of initiatives to help people with this particular non-communicable disease as both of his daughters are afflicted with this as well. This charity event is scheduled to be held at

Apes Hill Club on February 19th, 2016 and is already generating a lot of interest. It is Ian’s fervent hope that it becomes an annual event and is as productive as the one at Archerfield. For more information you can email shane@jalbarbados.com. Woosie’s other favorite past-time is food; both its preparation and consumption. He has many favorite restaurants on the island but he also loves preparing his own grub at home. He is a lover of taste, flavor and the occasional spiciness. He will cook his own curries or come down for the real deal at Sitar (shameless plug for my family restaurant) where we have dined together many, many times. He can be seen at numerous local restaurants including Sandy Lane, Lobster Alive, Mullins Beach, Champers and very much enjoys John Moores Rum Shop. I think I speak for most of his local friends and most people that may come in contact with him during his stays here; Woosie has become a Bajan!

The recently opened and very stunning oceanfront venue, The Cliff Beach Club, provided the most magical backdrop for the event, where fashionista guests were greeted with glasses of brilliantly sparkling pale-pink Aix Rosé and served exquisite canapés such as Hot Oysters poached in Champagne, Garlic Ciabatta with Iberic Ham and Smoked Salmon Rillette Toast. A sumptuous three-course lunch complimented with more delicious Aix Rosé wine was then served on the dining terraces. VIP guests included the British High Commissioner Victoria Dean, Geoffrey Markle official representitive of Aix Wines throughout the Caribbean and South America, and Richard Seale of R.L.Seale & Co. Celeste Pontifex of Platinum Wines and Rebecca Pitcher of Butterfly Boutique welcomed guests to the event and the fashion show got underway. Lithe models descended the stairs in the open air restaurant and ‘cat walked’ across each dining terrace built into the cliffside setting, ensuring every guest had a front row seat and, they were rewarded with cheers and applause. The day, evening and resort-wear included swim-suits, palazzo pants and, both elegant and flirty dresses in beautiful styles and prints from international brands such as PilyQ Barcelona, Blank London and Indah Clothing, all accessorised with beaded bags and high fashion Chlobo Jewellery from Butterfly Boutique. A door prize of a double magnum of Aix Rosé was won by Dr John Harris and guests were then invited to ‘shop the pop up boutique’ which was an almost sell out. Jenny Blanc - An exemplary reputation for their unique approach It is now some 15 years since the Jenny Blanc design studio carried out its first interior design commission in Barbados. Since then and many award winning projects later, it has an established design presence on the island and a highly successful lifestyle showroom which, in addition to offering an extraordinary range of beautiful, unusual products for the home, serves to introduce the company’s design work to potential clients. This includes a full design service for private homes or for the rental market as well as services re-designing individual rooms, room staging and accessorising. The design studio is based in the west London head office and over years of research Jenny Blanc has built up a library of the best, most beautiful fabrics, furnishings and fittings suitable for a tropical marine climate. Every attempt is made to source locally and the London studio has paint colour charts and samples of hardwoods, coral stone and tiles available in Barbados. The studio also designs unique pieces of furniture in the local vernacular, using traditional materials such as mahogany and other hardwoods, coral stone and wrought iron which are manufactured by the island’s skilled artisans and some of which can be seen in the Barbados showroom. Several, but not all, of Jenny Blanc’s clients are British and they find the UK based design head office and showroom extremely convenient for presentations and meetings throughout the course of the project. Some clients hear about the company’s design services through word of mouth, others from visiting the showroom in Barbados or from articles and advertisements in local magazines. Through experience and a company ethos of inimitable service, Jenny Blanc has created a unique approach whereby the synergy between the clients’ wishes and the designers’ knowledge and experience of the Caribbean produce tailor-made, original concepts for each project which require only minor adjustments during workshop meetings.

84 LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2015 - APRIL 2016

The company strives to make the whole design process enjoyable for its clients with an exciting momentum building up to the final happy conclusion. At the start of a commission, Jenny Blanc or Barbados-born, Design Director, Sue Thomas-Richardson, meets with the client to discuss the project, gets a brief of their requirements, establishes whether the property will be for private use or rental and gets an idea of their preferred style, colours and how they would like to live in it. The full service includes designs for the interiors and all outdoor living spaces, supplying architects with electrical layouts, specifying the finishes to hard surfaces such as paint colours and tiles, the creation of concept boards for each room and sourcing and supplying all furnishings and accessories down to the last detail. Where the property is a new build they will also work in conjunction with the architects and project managers to achieve the best results, as well as being available to attend site meetings when required. Following this initial meeting Jenny Blanc submits a proposal setting out its understanding of the client’s requirements for the property, the extent of the design work for which it is being engaged, the design fees and terms & conditions. The company is seldom given a budget but where necessary can work to a specified cost. In most cases, clients wish to have their new home ready for the excitement of their first Christmas in a Caribbean holiday home. September to December in Barbados is completely hectic for the design team getting all the projects finished for the Christmas finale! A typical four bedroom house, once built, can take approximately 6 - 8 months from concept to completion and Jenny Blanc prides itself on meeting exacting deadlines. Once the design fees and the scope of the commission have been agreed, work starts immediately on preparing scaled furniture layouts for a presentation meeting with the clients showing possible options for each room. At this meeting the designers, who have extensive experience of what is required to live in the tropics, recommend the best use of each area and will show some exciting initial ideas for fabrics and furnishings, listening to the clients’ feedback and response to these suggestions. This is usually a long meeting and can last up to 4 hours while the team get deeper into the clients’ wishes and aesthetics and ensure the project is going in the right direction. As soon as the layouts are agreed, the priority is always to prepare electrical detailing for the builders so that everything is in place in good time.

LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2015 - APRIL 2016

85

Concept boards are then prepared for each room and the furnishings summarised in every detail with costs and quantities. This is the point where the clients start to enjoy working on the project. The selection of beautiful fabrics and elegant furnishings for their home sparks real excitement and diffuses what to them can seem a daunting task. At a further two meetings these concepts will be finetuned and, where necessary, the costings adjusted. The company ensures that at all times the clients are in control of expenditure and throughout the project they are kept up to date with a detailed summary of costs. Once the client has accepted the furnishing costs, the procurement process begins with ordering, manufacturing of curtains, soft furnishings and bespoke items. All items sourced outside Barbados are consolidated with the company’s shippers. Included in Jenny Blanc’s service is the huge task of consolidating and shipping the clients’ furnishings and clearance through customs using the company’s experienced brokers to ensure a timely delivery and installation. The company has its own professional team to make sure the property is clean and ready for installation, the goods unpacked and installed right down to the final candle. It makes sure everything is completed for the client’s arrival with a rum punch waiting ready for the final walk-through and handover by Jenny or Sue. This is, of course, not the end, and the design team are always on hand to follow up on any additional requirements the client may have. Jenny Blanc’s success has brought many prestigious awards for its projects in the Caribbean including Best International Interior Design for an apartment in Port St. Charles and Best Interior Design Caribbean for a Royal Westmoreland Estate Residence. This year it has won a new award from the International Property Awards for a family residence in Apes Hill.
