t’s a brand-new year and, boy, do we have some exciting things for you in this issue! Although there’s nothing that prevents any of us from starting anew any day, any month, January just lends itself to new beginnings. For many, the most significant new beginning in their lifetime is marriage. It’s a new day of hope and looking forward to the future, and it’s why Lifestyle chooses the first issue of every new year to highlight some of our favorite weddings of local couples, as well as

On a personal note, there was another new beginning in our family as daughter Taylor and her husband Tim welcomed Piper Alice in December. We feel so blessed to have a beautiful and healthy new granddaughter, affectionately called “Pipee” by her big brother Elijah. Recently, Elijah asked his mom for a cupcake, but when she said no, he enthusiastically replied, “Mimi’s house, Mimi’s house!” That might be the best phrase in the universe and my joy at being a “cupcake grandmother” will never fade.

A PERILOUS TRIP TO THE ALTAR

xactly how the White River couple first met or how their relationship began is not clear, but Laura Slinkard was only 14 when it started and Lee Danner was 25. Since their first contact in this southern Tulare County town in 1890, several marriage dates had been set, but Danner never followed through. So when 19-year old Slinkard gave birth to their son in April 1894, she was still waiting for a wedding ring. The baby’s birth obviously did nothing to motivate the reluctant man to the altar, so in her mind, she had no other option than to go to Tulare County authorities and “swear out” a complaint against Danner charging him with seduction. In her complaint, she claimed that she consented to a physical relationship with him “under the promise of marriage,” and that his refusal to follow through

constituted a violation of California law. Filing criminal charges against him surely strained their relationship and the resulting drama put Visalia at ground zero of one of the most unusual criminal trials in the town’s history. Slinkard’s felony charge resulted in a warrant issued for Lee Jackson Danner, and in mid-April 1894, the defiant man was arrested. On April 19, a preliminary hearing was held in a Porterville courtroom with Deputy District Attorney William H. Alford in charge for the prosecution. During a lull in the proceedings, Danner walked out and rode off on horseback, with several men chasing him. He was eventually taken into custody and the judge found that there was enough evidence for a trial. Danner was released on $5,000 bond pending the December court appearance. T E X T

On Dec. 3, 1894, the trial began in Visalia’s Superior Court Department 2, with Judge Wheaton Gray presiding. Alford, assisted by Theodore S. Shaw of Porterville, represented the “people,” and Alfred Daggett and D.M. Adams were counsel for Danner. After jury selection, more than four dozen witnesses took the stand, including Slinkard, who told her “story of shame.” The courtroom was packed with spectators as the defense grilled her. Several witnesses testified that she had prior illicit relationships with other men, which if true, showed that she was not of “previous chaste character,” a requirement for conviction. Spectators listened intently to the “salacious” testimony. The courtroom was full each day of the trial, and a newspaper reporter observed that virtually all were men.

The trial lasted for 12 days and ended with both sides giving lengthy closing arguments. Alford addressed the court for more than five hours. Those who heard his oratory called it forceful, eloquent and powerful, describing it as a “tongue lashing” of Danner. Defense attorney Daggett spoke for more than two hours and those who heard his closing called it “the most powerful address ever delivered to a jury on behalf of a defendant….” On Dec. 18, the case was given to the jury. It did not take jurors long. By the next morning, they had a unanimous decision. “We the jury find the defendant guilty,” reported the jury foreman. Danner turned pale. A sentencing court date was calendared for Dec. 27, and Danner’s bail was set at $10,000. He couldn’t immediately make bail, so he was locked in a room at the Palace Hotel, a place considered by authorities to be safer confinement than the county jail because of recent jail

escapes. Soon, a relative of Danner posted his bond and he was released. Immediately after the guilty verdict, Danner, his friends and family members, as well as Slinkard, began talking about a plan for the future. The attorneys soon entered the discussion and an agreement was reached between the couple. Danner agreed to marry Slinkard and he signed a “contract” that bound him to live with his bride and support their child for two years. With the agreement in place, the attorneys requested that Judge Gray delay the sentencing date and he agreed, setting the new one for Jan. 3, 1895. On the evening of Dec. 28, just after 6 p.m., a small and quiet wedding took place at the Visalia House, with Methodist preacher Edmonds officiating. The couple was finally joined in matrimony. The convicted Danner was anxious to announce the good news to the judge, in hopes of receiving leniency. On Jan. 3, Danner and his attorney Adams appeared in court for sentencing and quickly announced the marriage, anticipating a favorable reaction from the judge. Gray was not swayed by the hasty act. Danner was given a choice of either paying a fine of $2,050 or being incarcerated for 1,025 days or nearly three years. The fine represented the actual cost of the trial and Gray made it clear that he was not interested in Tulare County taxpayers footing the bill. Danner was remanded to the sheriff while he considered his options.

When Danner was asked about the sentence, he said, “This is pretty tough, and it hurts my wife as well as me now.” He admitted that he was hoping the marriage would have earned him “clemency.” On Jan. 11, Danner’s two brothers, John and Jeff, arrived in Visalia with a bag of $20 gold pieces. They paid their brother’s fine and he was released from custody. The convicted man’s debt was paid, and he left Visalia for his home in the Kings County town of Grangeville to be with his new wife and child. This ended one of the most sensational cases ever tried in Tulare County and one of the most bizarre outcomes ever seen in Visalia. The couple’s life together from that point on is sketchy. But the union resulted in at least four children. Laura died in 1903 at the age of 29. Why she passed away at such a young age is not known. Lee died in 1941 at the age of 76. I would like to acknowledge the research help I received for this story from Jill Rozier Shelley of Clovis. She was very generous and provided valuable information on family history and photographs. Thank you so much, Jill. L

fter our gastronomical indulgences over the holidays, we may be looking for ways to get back to a healthier eating pattern. Several cookbooks published over the past year can help guide us. “The Clean Eating Slow Cooker” (from Rockridge Press, May 2017) is described as “a healthy cookbook of wholesome meals that prep fast and cook slow.” Author Linda Larsen promotes 130 recipes for vegetables, beans, grains, seafood, poultry and much more, all intended for home cooks to slim down, gain energy, save money and feel healthier. “Trim Healthy Mama: Trim Healthy Table: More than 300 All-New Healthy and Delicious Recipes from Our Homes to Yours,” by Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison (published by Harmony in September), intends to help family cooks prepare healthy foods that even the pickiest children or spouses will enjoy. The title to Gareth Jaiden’s cookbook gives a good clue as to what it contains. “Meal Prep: For Weight Loss, Clean Eating and Staying Healthy” also claims easy-to-cook recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. It was published in July by Jaiden, a chef who is passionate about healthy eating. VALLEY WRITERS Author and artist Aliza McCracken of Bakersfield has several books to her credit. Her latest is “Peaceful Moments: Creative Affirmations for Your Heart & Soul.” The book is intended to awaken passion and create peacefulness. In all, she has produced seven coffee-table books of art, poetry and inspiration. Her earlier works are “The Dance of Love,” “Spirit of Joy,” “Creative Abundance,” “Pure Grace,” “Celebrating 16 L I F E S T Y L E | J A N UA R Y 2 0 1 8

a Beautiful Life,” and “A Season of Miracles.” She began painting at 4 years old and turned professional at age 15. Visalia dentist Alan Sproles has published two books. “The Train from Outer Space,” co-authored by Lizanne Southgate and published by Equistar Publishing in 2015, features a 12-year-old

boy and his dog who rescue a tiny alien from a living train. Also published in 2015 is his other book, “Billy Bedivere in the Quest for the Dragon Queen.” Billy goes on a weekend camping trip with his dad and encounters a huge blue bunny, maneating trees and a two-headed dragon. HOW MUCH DO YOU READ? According to Pew Research, Americans read an average of 12 books a year. However, the typical American reads only four books. The difference is because the most prolific readers read a lot more than 12 books each and raised the average well above what the typical person read. About two-thirds of these readers have read at least one print book, while only about one-fourth read an e-book. The composite of the most prolific reader would be an 18- to 29-year-old white woman with a college education making

more than $75,000 and living in a city. At least, these are the characteristics of the top readers in each category. WHAT DO PEOPLE READ? According to a chart compiled by Mediaworks, the most popular book genre of all time is children’s fiction, which comprises about 39 percent of all books, totaling one billion. Next is modern literary fiction (published after the 1950s) at 16 percent (409 million), and tied for third place at 13 percent are classic literary fiction and fantasy fiction. On the other hand, the most popular books of all time, as compiled by Lovereading.co.uk, include “The Holy Quran” (3+ billion), The King James Bible (2.5 billion), “Quotations from Chairman Mao” (800 million), “Don Quixote” (500 million), “Harry Potter” (450 million), “A Tale of Two Cities” (200 million), “The Lord of the Rings” (150 million), “The Little Prince” (140 million) and “The Hobbit” (100 million). 100 YEARS AGO Screenwriter Sterling Silliphant was born 100 years ago on Jan. 16. He is most famous as the Oscar-winning writer of “In the Heat of the Night,” which starred Sidney Poitier, and of the television series “Route 66” and “Naked City.” His earliest work was for stories used on “The Mickey Mouse Club.” THE LAST WORD “We struggle with eating healthily, obesity and access to good nutrition for everyone. But we have a great opportunity to get on the right side of this battle by beginning to think differently about the way that we eat and the way that we approach food.” – Marcus Samuelsson (Ethiopian chef, 1970- ) L

ust north of Exeter, half a mile away from the busy lanes of Highway 198, is a ranch where the dreams of many brides have come true. Situated among orange groves and flanked by horse corrals, Whitney’s Wild Oak Ranch welcomes guests with true country hospitality. Buffy the Buffalo, a neighborhood favorite, greets visitors at the gate, and farther along a treecanopied road, horses, cattle and an occasional goat dot the landscape. The scent of hay and the gentle sounds of animals relaxing in their pastures fill the air. A hawk circling overhead cries out. Within a minute, the ranch’s “party barn” comes into view, as well as a glimpse of the manicured gardens of the Whitney mansion. Both structures, while completely different, play an integral role in the venue’s events. Joey Armstrong, ranch manager and event coordinator, gave Lifestyle Magazine a tour of the property that serves not only as a working ranch, offering riding lessons and horse training, but is also a popular site for weddings, receptions, anniversary celebrations, birthday parties, fundraisers and quinceñeras.

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY The ranch initially was the home of the late Leonard and Barbara Whitney, who were members of the grocery store industry. They owned and operated several stores in the San Joaquin Valley, including Nickel’s Payless Stores, Best Buy Market in Visalia, Food King Markets and Food 4 Less stores in Clovis, Fresno, Visalia, Hanford and Bakersfield. Large family gatherings for Thanksgiving and Christmas were often held in the barn. In 2001, Leonard retired to the ranch, but couldn’t stay away and opened BL Quality Meats in 2013. After Leonard’s son Greg Whitney acquired the property, he decided to offer the barn to the community for celebrations. The turn of events over the years has proved to be of benefit for guests of the ranch, as they have access to the barn, the mansion and a built-in caterer in BL Quality Meats. Guests are able to choose their menu from a variety of options and price points, and are guaranteed not to leave hungry. THE BARN Affectionately referred to as the “party barn,” the building can seat up to 220 people, based on table configuration. Cozy leather booths reminiscent of a family restaurant line

the walls, where family and friends can gather in the midst of celebrating. A small stage can host a live band, DJ or photo booth. For larger events, the ranch also owns a 20x40-foot canopy tent, which can be used to set up additional tables outdoors. The barn also features a full bar and “homey environment that welcomes people to it,” said Armstrong, who has been employed at the ranch for 20 years. Armstrong is guaranteed to put guests at ease with her can-do attitude, and is a consummate host who is helpful, creative and dedicated. “I strive to make everything perfect for people, to be a great host, and make it a good event and experience for them,” she said. “Whatever they envision their wedding to be like, I try to help out with that.” The ranch’s favorable reputation means that it hosts on average two events per month. “People book with us because they hear about the nice experiences that others have had,” she said. One of the biggest stresses for families hosting a wedding is getting all the decorating done on time in the midst of rehearsal dinners, photo sessions, hair appointments and the never-ending list of details. Armstrong

understands this and allows guests to bring their decor for a Friday set-up, host their event on Saturday and clean up on Sunday. The ranch also supplies all tables and chairs. Armstrong said with a smile that she has the set-up and takedown of the barn down to a science. Seeing how guests choose to decorate is one of her favorite aspects of being the event coordinator. “It’s the same barn, but I love, love seeing how people choose to decorate with flowers, colors and styles,” Armstrong said. “They can bring all their own stuff and I love how different people decorate.” Examples of how guests have shown their creativity can be seen on the ranch’s Facebook page. Armstrong said decorations are often left over from myriad events held each year, and she has stored many of them on-site. Last month, a guest needed a special touch on the tables and, luckily, Armstrong had just the answer in storage. She said that after meal service, another favorite aspect of coordinating weddings is listening to the toasts offered to the new couple. “Some of the toasts make you cry, and I don’t even know these people!” she said, while others are so funny that the entire room erupts in laughter.

THE MANSION A two-story Victorian home built in 1997 serves as a staging ground for many bridal parties. Expansive bedrooms allow brides and bridal parties to primp, prepare and relax a bit before the wedding ceremony. A theater room (conveniently located next to a bar) is a great spot for the groom and groomsmen to unwind and pass the time. Beautiful inlaid woodwork on the walls makes the entire home feel warm and inviting. A grand spiral staircase is also the site of many wedding party photographs. Large picture windows bring the outdoors in, with views of the ranch, its horses and the beautiful garden surrounding the home. Outside, a meticulously manicured garden features a koi pond with large, brightly colored fish, shady Chinese elm trees, a white gazebo, gorgeous grass and seasonal flowers. Fountains and the sound of trickling water help soothe frayed nerves. All of these elements make for a perfect backdrop to stunning wedding photographs. As the day turns to night, delicate lights in the elm trees illuminate to tie the mansion and the party barn grounds together under a sky of soft light. “When we walk around the corner from the party barn, it’s an amazing experience for them,” Armstrong said. TAKING A LOOK Whitney’s Wild Oak Ranch is already booking events for 2019. Armstrong said she enjoys meeting with future brides and grooms (and others looking for an event venue) and happily gives tours. “I love showing the barn, and I always welcome people to come out. Being able to see it is so much better than me trying to tell them about it.” L

THE REAL WEDDING OF

Maddie

&

Tim VENUE WOLF LAKES PARK, SANGER, CA WEDDING “The best part of photographing Tim and Maddie’s wedding was that you could tell people are really special to both of them. They weren’t just excited to get married - they were excited to celebrate their marriage with those closest to them. I’ll never forget watching Maddie and her family do a special little secret handshake-type cheer right before the ceremony, or the big dance circle they had at the end of the night with their friends. Plus Maddie had a serious Cinderella vibe in her full, flowing dress. Their wedding felt like Disney came to life!” PHOTOS BY Lauren Westra Lauren Westra Photography

I

n the 15 years I have been in Visalia, there has definitely been a shift in what brides and grooms want to serve their friends and family for dinner. The day of the “wedding chicken breast” with mystery sauce and a small, overcooked steak, also sauced, is gone, gone, gone! Say goodbye to the “duo” plate! Hip, hip, hooray! In its place, innovative menus of small plates, bars of every kind and family-style farm-to-table dining on large wooden tables are all the rage. My next three weddings are something like this: a slider bar with four different kinds of mini sandwiches and not necessarily a burger, mini wedge salad, tiny soup shooters and a fry bar. Wedding number two is a flatbread bar with an array of finger foods and salads accompanied by five different flatbreads from the standard mozzarella, basil and tomato with olive oil to pork belly and caramelized onion and parsley-garlic oil.

Number three is family-style dining, platters on large farm tables with courses on each to pass around the table of eight. That is what is featured in this article. I started offering other suggestions several years ago, opting for a gourmet burger bar that was far more budget-friendly and interesting, and I found that guests were just thrilled. I then started offering food stations with small plates. One of my brides wanted stations, but she wanted a more elegant menu, so we did a raw bar, caviar puff pastry stars and lobster cocktails; the next wanted a more casual style with street tacos, ceviche, jalapeno poppers with a salsa bar and homemade chips. The possibilities are endless and guests like being able to mingle rather than sit at one table for the entire evening and they like to graze at their own pace. I saw that it kept the party alive much longer and made for a more festive atmosphere.

ROAST CHICKEN

EPICURE

8 servings INGREDIENTS 1 (5- to 6-pound) roasting chicken Kosher salt and ground black pepper 1 bunch fresh thyme plus extra sprigs, about 15 4-5 sprigs fresh rosemary plus 5 extra 1 lemon, halved 1 head garlic, cut in half crosswise 4 tablespoons butter, melted 1 large onion, quartered 4-5 carrots cut into large pieces 1 fennel bulb, fronds removed and cut into wedges Olive oil DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Remove the chicken giblets. Rinse the chicken inside and out, and pat the outside dry. Salt and pepper the inside of the chicken. Stuff the cavity with the bunch of thyme, sprigs of rosemary, both halves of lemon, and all the garlic. Brush the outside of the chicken with the butter and sprinkle again with salt and pepper. Tie the legs together with kitchen string and tuck the wing tips under the body of the chicken. Place the onions, carrots and fennel in a roasting pan. Toss with salt, pepper, 15 sprigs of thyme, extra rosemary and olive oil. Spread around the bottom of the roasting pan and place the chicken on top. Roast the chicken for 1 1/2 hours, or until the juices run clear when you cut between a leg and thigh. Remove the chicken and vegetables to a platter and cover with aluminum foil for about 20 minutes. Slice the chicken onto a platter and serve it with the vegetables.

KALE AND DATE SALAD Serves 8 INGREDIENTS 12-ounce bag cleaned and cut kale Pitted dates, cut into quarters Golden beets, roasted (see below) 1 cup toasted walnuts Goat cheese log, crumbled 1 lemon Lemon-infused olive oil, about 3-4 tablespoons Salt and pepper Place greens in a serving bowl. Add quartered dates and toasted walnuts. Squeeze the entire lemon into the greens and drizzle with olive oil over. Add salt and pepper. Toss well. Crumble goat cheese over and serve. DIRECTIONS To roast beets: Scrub beets and trim the bottoms. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place the beets in foil to make a packet. Drizzle with olive oil and close up the foil tightly. Place the beets in the oven and roast for about 40 minutes. I use a wooden skewer to poke them to make sure that they are done. If the toothpick or skewer goes in without resistance, they are done. Remove from the foil and peel. That process should be relatively easy. The skins should just slide off. Slice into quarters (or eighths, if the beets are larger). 36 L I F E S T Y L E | J A N UA R Y 2 0 1 8

BABY BACK RIBS INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

6-8 pounds baby back ribs Dry rub (use your own if you have a special blend) or mix 1 tablespoon each: Mexican chili powder Paprika Cumin Salt and pepper to taste Dark beer (bring to a boil before pouring over ribs)

Sprinkle the ribs with the rub and place in roasting pan. Add dark beer that has been heated and pour over. Cover ribs with foil and bake in a 375-degree oven for about 1 1/2 hours or until fork-tender. Slather with your favorite BBQ sauce. Special tip: Stir in a bit of espresso powder to add a smoky flavor. I’ll pass on that tip!

CHIPOTLE MAC ‘N CHEESE Serves 8 INGREDIENTS 1 pound pasta such as elbow, shells or cavatappi 4 cups milk 4 tablespoons flour 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 teaspoons dry Coleman’s mustard Pinch nutmeg 4 cups grated Gruyere 2 cups grated sharp cheddar plus 1 cup to garnish before baking 2 tablespoons chopped Chipotle Chiles in adobo sauce (add more chiles for more heat) DIRECTIONS Cook the pasta and drain according to package directions. Make a béchamel sauce: Melt the butter in a medium saucepan. Whisk in flour and cook for 2-3 minutes to remove the flour taste. Slowly add milk a little at a time until it is all in; sauce will thicken. Add the dry mustard and pinch of nutmeg. Whisk in. Remove from heat and gradually add the two cheeses a little at a time until completely melted. Add the pasta and chiles and blend well. Pour into a baking dish. Sprinkle the top with the remaining cheddar and bake in a 350-degree oven until the cheese is melted on top. Serve immediately. 38 L I F E S T Y L E | J A N UA R Y 2 0 1 8

Tim VENUE LEAL VINEYARDS, HOLLISTER, CA WEDDING “Capturing Chelsea and Tim’s winter wedding in a vineyard among the hills was like a dream come true. They were the perfect couple. Fun, loving, genuine, and GORGEOUS! The bride was like no other; platinum blonde hair, milky white skin, and gorgeous red lips. We were all stunned by her beauty, including the groom. His reaction to seeing Chelsea for the first time coming down the aisle was perfect. It was the kind of response every bride (and photographer) hopes for. RECEPTION TRENDS

Roll Up The Food Truck for Post-Wedding Snacks

P

roving that they are not a shortlived culinary trend, food trucks continue to serve creative cuisines that draw crowds. As the number of trucks increase and the food options expand, owners are finding new ways to support their communities and please their customers. Catering wedding receptions is one way that food trucks are wowing fans, but not all brides and grooms want to forgo the traditionally served dinner shared among guests. Fortunately, there are new ways to incorporate food trucks into the party and they happen to fill a void that you might not have considered. Many wedding meals are served early in the evening, around 5 or 6 o’clock. That’s followed by hours of enjoyment on the dance floor working up an appetite that cake, as delicious as it may be, simply can’t satisfy. Post-party snacks offered to guests

48 L I F E S T Y L E | J A N UA R Y 2 0 1 8

at the end of the night are growing in popularity, and they provide an ideal way to incorporate food trucks. These trucks offer a fun way to close out the night and express your appreciation to all who attended. If a truck makes its way onto your wedding planning wish list, there are a few things to consider to ensure that these post-party snacks are the right fit for your event. DETERMINE IF YOUR VENUE AND HEAD COUNT IS FOODTRUCK FRIENDLY First, consider your reception venue. Ray Baniaga is co-owner of Lumpia Hut, a food truck specializing in Filipino cuisine. When asked what types of wedding venues work best for food trucks, he says outdoor events remain popular. He adds that the bride and groom should be aware of what their venue will allow. Some

restrict outside food as well as a truck parking near the venue entrance. If you are considering an indoor venue, while that might be challenging for having a food truck serve dinner, that doesn’t have to be the case if you incorporate trucks for post-party snacks. Ray mentions that this makes it ideal for the truck to park outside the venue near the exit door, allowing you to incorporate food trucks even if you don’t have an outdoor venue with wide-open space for truck parking. Once you know that your venue allows truck parking on or near the property, you’ll need to evaluate the food truck’s needs. Miguel Reyes and his wife, Mikayla, have a food truck for their restaurant Quesadilla Gorilla. Miguel reports that they serve at about 15 weddings a year around the South-Central Valley, traveling as far as San Luis Obispo.

Miguel says of their truck, “We are self-sufficient.” Meaning that they have no electrical or propane needs to operate the truck and kitchen. He adds that they are happy to meet the wishes of the bride and groom whether they would like the truck visible out front or hidden in the back. If the truck you choose has special needs, though, you will need to make sure that the venue can accommodate them. If trucks are approved for your venue, inquire about extra costs and requirements. Elise Anderson, event manager at Historic Seven Sycamores Ranch in Ivanhoe, says, “The venue does allow food trucks for weddings and events, but clients will need to keep in mind that there is an added cleaning fee since food trucks don’t typically provide wait staff. The food truck also needs to be a licensed and insured business.” Next, evaluate the number of guests who plan to attend. Quesadilla Gorilla requires a minimum purchase of 75 quesadillas along with a labor charge and mileage charges depending on the venue location. “We pack to-go boxes,” Miguel says, explaining that if only 50 guests attend, the bride and groom can still take home the quesadillas that were purchased. Likewise, Lumpia Hut requires a minimum order, but Ray says, “We work with the bride and groom on their budget.” Some trucks may be better suited for smaller or larger events, so once your RSVPs are in, you will want to inquire with the truck before you get too far into the planning process.

THE FUTURE OF FOOD TRUCKS AND WEDDING RECEPTIONS

DECIDE ON THE BEST POST-PARTY BITES Your guests will be ready for snacking, but they will also be a bit tired after the fun of the reception. It is a good idea not to overload them with large portions or too many options. Most trucks have bite-sized snacks that will fit this need. Quesadilla Gorilla adjusts its menu based on the type of service it provides at the wedding and for what the bride and groom want, whether that is preselected quesadilla fillings or a buildyour-own option. Lumpia Hut offers its lumpia, an easy-to-take-away spring roll filled with meat and vegetables. It is also flexible regarding its menu. With the cuisine being Filipino, Lumpia sometimes gets requests for a special dish that a customer remembers having, and it is open to working with the bride and groom to provide this, in addition to the regular menu. The most important part is that you find a truck with food options that meet your needs and what you feel that your guests would most enjoy. Don’t be afraid to make special requests for smaller portions or a twist on a truck’s traditional menu. Many are willing accommodate your wishes and brainstorm ideas that would best fit your event.

As local rules and regulations for legal parking are evaluated and revised, it is certain that more food trucks will be popping up around the area offering their services for wedding receptions. Trucks currently in operation will likely expand their offerings as well. Miguel mentions that they have a goal of getting a smaller truck to serve parties of 20 to 30. This would allow for easier parking at smaller venues, and it would also make a truck an option when brides and grooms are operating on a smaller budget. When asked if food trucks will continue to be a popular offering at weddings, Miguel says that from his experiences, yes. He adds, “I wish we had a food truck at our wedding. There is something amazing about eating off a food truck.” There is no doubt that the fun and filling treats from a food truck will make a memorable ending to your special day. It is sure to keep the celebration going long after the last dance. L

I specialize in photographing and videoing Indian weddings, and am always drawn to the vivid colors and the close bonds between the bride and groom and their families. Each Indian wedding is unique in its own way, but all share elements of tradition that photographers must capture. NO SHO RTAGE O F ADVENTUR E

DOWNTOWN T E X T

I

love world travel. I’ve seen a lot of it, both nationally and internationally. In most cases, I stick to a formula to increase my chances of enjoying the time when I’m abroad in a new town, city or village. I like to explore, discover and take it in. By following this simple formula, I can usually get my fill, or thrill, out of the place; but what to do when returning to my hometown of Visalia? I’ve proudly discovered the same formula applies with our town, especially with our downtown and, I assure you, we have a good one. It is unquestionably the best in the Valley and is in the race for one of the best statewide. Let me explain. When traveling, we seek to escape, in most circumstances, to change our life for a moment or to chase some forgotten magic. This is often sought through food: local kitchen or food cart discoveries, where we try something new or dangerous, or by happenstance change a culinary misconception. Next, one looks for entertainment. Depending on town size, it could be anything from a local, traditional or cultural troupe to the world’s top musicians and acts. Other entertaining activities include local fashions, art or educational endeavors. All are ingredients for successful city adventure. Our Main Street stretches from

54 L I F E S T Y L E | J A N UA R Y 2 0 1 8

B Y

M A J O R

R O G E R S

domestic dwellings to commercial to industrial. It thrives and has something many Main Streets across the U.S. can’t brag about; we don’t board up windows. Within and about this two-mile stretch is the heart of the discovery: a magical half-mile of escape. Did you know that you could eat at a different eatery every day for more than a month in this half-mile? We have everything from all-natural to Creole, from pizza to picnic, Brazilian to Indian, American to Armenian, specialty salads to sushi, with a couple of options to dine on a patio or buy a street taco. We are entertained by sports bars, Blue Lounges, freshly brewed beers and coffees. Many downtown restaurants are originally decorated with murals or hung wall art. Café 225 regularly hosts impressive displays by local artists, creating eatery experiences not only for the palate but for the eyes as well. All are available to be explored alone or paired with other activities for a festive evening. There is no shortage of clothing options: gowns for weddings, gowns for proms, supplied by shops that have grown up with our city and stayed, shops run by owners who see the world, with the intention of bringing us what most travel to the Bay Area or Los Angeles to purchase. Boutiques of fashion, boutiques of home décor, appliances

and custom furnishings; we even have a free aquarium on Main Street. All are owned and operated by locals who take pride in business and our community. Something I have also proudly pointed out about our downtown is the entertainment that has been brought to us. As an example of what’s to come in the next 30 days of the writing of this piece, the Fox, our Main Street crown jewel, will be hosting Grammywinning country singer Dwight Yoakam. I remember the singer selling out Fresno’s Selland Arena in the ‘90s. The Billboard and American Music Awardwinning rock band Three Doors Down will be performing in January as well. This summer, the Fox will be hosting Jethro Tull, another Grammy-winning mega-band. It’s also the home of the Tulare County Symphony and the buffet of culture it provides throughout the year. The theater hosts a series of “throwback” movies, allowing for cinematic discovery and re-discovery by multiple generations. Down the street, you can find The Cellar Door, another musical venue that has helped launch the budding careers of acts like Foster the People or Cold War Kids, groups that soon after went on to headline their own talents around the world, in front of thousands. In January, The Cellar Door will be hosting

the ‘80s pop icon group The English Beat, whose two hits, “Save it for Later” and “Mirror in the Bathroom,” put them on charts around the globe. The songs are also featured in multiple iconic movies; there’s a good chance you have tapped your toes to them. Opportunities like this are brought to you by actively working local promoters such as Rainmaker Productions. The name Rainmaker was given to the

the

company when a media source called founder and local businessman Mike Cavale a “rainmaker” on his ability to attract quality entertainment. Aaron Gomes heads up Sound-n-Vision Foundation; he’s has gained a reputation for attracting local gigs to proven rising stars, and also acts that would typically never consider Visalia’s market. I’ve seen Gordon Lightfoot, the B52s, the Beach Boys and rapper Slick Rick, among others, all downtown. Now, perhaps I wouldn’t travel as far as Fresno for a majority of these acts, and I’m not that big of a fan of most; however, when an internationally acclaimed artist comes to our town and you get a chance to see the pageant of the master in person, performing what very well may be a timeless tune, you get off the couch on those evenings, grab a date or group of friends, or adventure alone. You drive, taxi, Uber or be adventurous and city bus-it downtown. Pick a dinner spot, have a couple of pints, glasses or shots, release the spirits and then walk to your show. Enjoy the atmosphere; enjoy the vibe; enjoy the moment. Afterward, walk to a place like The Vintage Press for an after-show

gardens outdoor venue

espresso and dessert, or a nightcap. If you’ve never made the effort to really get to know your downtown, it’s a must. We have so much. Groups like the Downtown Visalians promote the area through get-to-know-you opportunities like the culinary samplings of “A Taste of Downtown,” the “Wine Walk” or “Downtown Brewfest.” These activities are the cultural, social norms of many desirable Western European cities. These events are the essence of life-improving and mindexpanding opportunities to seize. I am proud of my city. I am proud of our city as a whole, not just downtown. Each area of Visalia has its pockets and opportunities; however, many are single destination spots, located in a corporate parking lot. There is absolutely nothing wrong with visits to every corner of Visalia, but it’s our downtown that is my favorite escape for its shops, services, museum, stateof-the-art library, galleries and bakeries, all within steps of each other. It truly is a Valley gem as precious as a sunset and, just like a brilliant sunset, downtown Visalia is something worth catching. L

San Diego A HONEYMOON DESTINATION FIT FOR ALL T E X T

or most couples, a long-anticipated honeymoon often revolves around food, fun and — most importantly — relaxation. After months or even years of wedding planning, the honeymoon is a time to finally sit back and enjoy uninterrupted wedded bliss with your new spouse. But that wedded bliss is often overshadowed by inevitable traveling woes — long flights, delays, missing baggage and hours of lost time. While jet-setting across the world can be glamorous and exciting, a honeymoon trip to San Diego can simplify your traveling plans without compromising the quality of your honeymoon experience. In San Diego — just a quick drive or flight south of the Central Valley — there’s a honeymoon experience fit for every couple, from history buffs and beach bums to city slickers and romantics. Whether you prefer relaxing on the beach, exploring historic neighborhoods or eating your way through a city, San Diego is a world-class

56 L I F E S T Y L E | J A N UA R Y 2 0 1 8

honeymoon destination close to home. THE ROMANTICS If you and your spouse are hopeless romantics with a love story straight out of a Cary Grant film, then you’ll find plenty in San Diego to fuel your starry-eyed affair. Stay: Without a doubt, you’ll fall in love all over again while staying at the US Grant Hotel in the heart of downtown San Diego. Decorated with grand chandeliers and infused with 1920s charm, this historic landmark will bring you back to a time when elegance was a way of life. Within walking distance of downtown dining, shopping and nightlife — and 10 minutes from Coronado Island — you’ll be surrounded by romance in every direction (theusgrant.com). Dine: San Diego is a non-stop thrill ride when it comes to dining options, but if you’re looking for a truly romantic experience, Mister A’s is a must. First opened in 1965, Mister A’s fine

American cuisine features elegant items like traditional seafood paella, butter poached lobster tail and gorgonzolacrusted prime beef filet. Perched on a hill overlooking the San Diego Bay, Mister A’s offers some of the most breathtaking views (asrestaurant.com). See: Where do we start? Probably with the views, and San Diego has plenty of them. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is a 68-acre regional park on Point Loma Peninsula’s western shoreline. Sunset Cliffs showcases San Diego’s most beautiful sunsets along its rugged shoreline. Park your car, take a stroll and soak in the views because it doesn’t get much better than this. Another area known for its scenery is La Jolla Shores. One of San Diego’s most affluent beach towns, La Jolla features great spots for dining, art hopping, kayaking, swimming and exploring. If sand and surf isn’t your thing, the cliffs are lined with convenient sidewalks for walking, jogging and sightseeing.

THE HISTORY BUFFS History probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of San Diego, but there are fascinating hints of early California history everywhere you look. From Catholic missions and Spanish settlements to historic buildings, San Diego’s history is a celebrated part of its culture. Stay: A San Diego honeymoon wouldn’t be complete without a night or two at Hotel Del Coronado. Built in 1888, “The Del” was the first seaside resort on the West Coast and has played host to presidents, celebrities and royal guests. The Del sits right on Coronado Beach, ensuring that each guest is just steps away from the water. Its appeal, however, is more widely attributed to its historic architecture and Southern California charm. Even if you don’t stay here, take a walk through the hotel lobby and enjoy a classic cocktail on the back patio (hoteldel.com). Dine: Another reason to visit La Jolla is The Marine Room, a spectacular seaside dining experience. This awardwinning seafood restaurant has been a favorite for more than 75 years. During high tide, guests are treated to a “show” as waves crash against the windows (marineroom.com). If you’d prefer a more laid-back restaurant experience that takes you back in time, head to Old Town’s La Piñata Restaurant and Bar. Opened in 1928, La Piñata is the oldest remaining restaurant in Old Town. Here, you’ll enjoy classic Mexican cuisine with a modern twist (lapinata.com). See: Speaking of Old Town, you’ll want to make a day of exploring this historic Spanish settlement, established in 1769 at the base of the very first mission built in California. Today, Old Town showcases California’s unique Spanish history and architecture through its preserved buildings, exhibits and living history demonstrations (oldtownsandiego.org). A few other notable historic sights to see include Balboa Park and Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma, which commemorates the landing of Juan Cabrillo in 1542.

Honeymoon Edition

THE BEACH BUMS While some honeymooners prefer adventure and non-stop exploration, there are others who would rather spend their time soaking up the sun and enjoying the sand. Stay: If you’re looking for seclusion within minutes from San Diego’s most popular attractions, Paradise Point Resort and Spa is the answer. This private 44-acre island in Mission Bay is surrounded by a mile of beach and features five swimming pools, relaxing lagoons, waterfront restaurants, marina access with

boat rentals, a luxury spa and more (destinationhotels.com/paradise-point). Dine: Coastal dining is a must, and we know just the place. After you’ve spent the day basking in the sun, your palate will be craving the modern Mexican fare and creative cocktails served at Coasterra on Harbor Island (cohnrestaurants.com/coasterra). This oceanfront restaurant features patio dining overlooking the San Diego skyline. If you’d rather opt for seafood, head next door to C Level or Island Prime, both offering excellent steak and seafood items with equally breathtaking views

(cohnrestaurants.com/islandprime). For those looking for fast-casual dining near the beach, head to Pizza Port in Ocean Beach for pizza and award-winning craft beer. See: From surfing in Carlsbad to relaxing on the expansive beaches in Coronado, you and your spouse can explore a different shoreline each day of your honeymoon. Several of San Diego’s most popular beaches include Pacific Beach and Mission Beach. If you’re looking for adventure in the water, rent a tandem kayak and explore La Jolla Cove or Mission Bay via boat.

SHOW THE CITY SLICKERS Sun, sand and surf may be San Diego’s draw, but there’s so much more to this coastal city than its beaches. Culture, art, food and beer abound in and around the city, and a honeymoon to San Diego wouldn’t be complete without indulging in the finer things. Stay: When diving into San Diego’s culture and food scene, a stay near or in downtown will keep you close to the best food, entertainment and beer. We recommend staying at The Pendry, an urban-luxury hotel in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, where you’ll be immersed in an eclectic mix of dining, shopping and nightlife (pendryhotels.com/san-diego). But don’t limit yourself to the Gaslamp neighborhood; culture thrives in nearby neighborhoods like Little Italy, North Park, South Park, Hillcrest and the up-and-coming Barrio Logan. Dine: With more than 130 craft breweries, San Diego has become famous for its booming craft beer scene (sdbeer.com). Many of these breweries—including Stone Brewery and Karl Strauss — have opened restaurants in addition to their taprooms. Over the past few years, Liberty Station — a former naval training center built in 1923 — has been transformed into a dining, shopping and art mecca. Here you’ll find some of the city’s best craft eateries — Stone Brewery World Bistro and Gardens, Liberty Public Market, Slaters 50/50 Burgers and Buona Forchetta — as well as art galleries, specialty boutiques, walking paths and gorgeous views of the bay (libertystation.com). See: Balboa Park — on the eastern edge of downtown — sits as a reminder of San Diego’s vibrant past, with plenty to celebrate about its future. This 1,200-acre urban cultural park is home to the San Diego Zoo, impressive art and history museums, early 1900s Spanish and Mission Revival architecture, beautiful gardens and walking paths, several theaters and popular dining spots (balboapark.org). Afterward, head a few miles east to the North and South Park neighborhoods, where you’ll find an abundance of craft beer, coffee shops, unique restaurants, boutiques and, of course, hipsters. Whether you and your spouse are beach bums or city slickers (or a little bit of both), you don’t have to go far to design your perfect honeymoon in San Diego. With great food, diverse culture, unique history and endless beach options, San Diego is the ideal place to kick off your new life together after you say “I do.” L

THE REAL WEDDING OF

&

George VENUE TUSCAN GARDENS, KINGSBURG, CA WEDDING “George and Tammy became Mr. and Mrs. McKean in October 2017. They both work at the Tulare County Office of Education and are one of the sweetest couples. Their ceremony and reception took place at the Tuscan Gardens venue on the outskirts of Kingsburg. What a gorgeous venue. The ceremony was held on the lush, green lawn moments before the sun began to set. The soft lighting coming through the trees was perfect. After an intimate exchanging of vows, we headed out to the vineyard to capture some sunset photos that showcased the peace and joy felt throughout the entire day. God’s favor was truly abundant for George and Tammy, blessing them with perfect weather, joyous guests, beautiful scenery, and a palpable love and respect for one another.” PHOTOS BY Amy Sa Amy Sa Photography
