A “quitter” = that failing sock sagging down your right leg.

It's a sad day. Broken promises, failed goals, forfeited dreams.

I can't stand quitters, and I hate it when the elastic in a perfectly fine pair of socks gives out. I can be going about my day, minding my own business, and before I

The thing is, I can relate to that poor sock. I start with the best intentions every year. It's a fresh year, so I make my resolutions and start off well. COMMUNITY & CONNECTION BRINGING COLLABORATIVE COWORKING TO VISALIA’S DOWNTOWN

Words by Sonia Mehrmand Illustrations by Saegan Brien

T

he popularity of coworking spaces has grown alongside the expanding remote workforce. The Central Valley has felt the effects of this, with many millennials

returning to their hometowns after their LA or SF-based jobs moved completely online. As remote work becomes the norm, our region must expand its coworking options in order to attract remote workers to the Valley, and provide a home for entrepreneurs and the creative workforce. This is where Visalia’s first coworking space—Kinwork—comes into play. Kinwork will not only bring a shared workspace to downtown Visalia, but also a gathering place for creatives and entrepreneurs who seek collaboration. It will provide educational resources and workshops, a community event space, private studios, meeting rooms, and more as it develops its offerings.

TRENDSETTING WEDDING INSPIRATION Words by Lifestyle Staff

I

f you’re planning a wedding in 2024 or just want to know what's hot, the latest wedding

trends are equal parts inspiring and engaging, while paying tribute to tradition. The real win? The latest wedding trends are easy to make your own.

Audio Guestbook

The term "audio guest book" refers more to the finished product: A compilation of audio recordings made by wedding guests that you and your new spouse can cherish forever. Your friends and family can walk up to the phone, pick up the receiver, and leave their special message for you.

20

Wedding Trends

Wedding Weekends

With a wedding, the expectation of traditions while you aim to have the Best Day Ever, can be epically daunting. So, split the "Big Day" into two or three days. You free yourself, and your intended to fully enjoy the best parts of the ceremony: intimacy and sacredness, while going all out with a fun and lively reception.

Champagne Towers

We hope this trend never goes out of style; champagne towers offer plenty of glimmer and glamour. Be certain to plan ahead if you want to recreate this drinkable architectural feat, though. Use coupe glasses to create a wider, sturdier base (not flutes) and figure out when exactly you’d like to create the tower—perhaps instead of a cake cutting? Now pop a bottle and party on!

Social Content Creation

A top priority in 2024, wedding content creators are capturing elevated content with a behind-the-scenes approach. Everything is captured on an iPhone, giving both bride and guests a unique perspective. Companies like “Her Day Social” promise to deliver content from your wedding day within 24 hours, so couples can share their wedding on social media platforms.

DAVID & ABIGAIL

From the Photographer

Abigail and David's wedding day was straight out of a fairytale. David's eyes welled with tears during their first look, a moment that set the tone for the day. Abigail, a book lover, crafted her vows like pages from one of her favorite novels, beautifully narrating their story as she committed her life to her husband. Portraits were captured under the cascading purple wisteria, while a vintage pink getaway car added a pop of color to their sunset session. Giggles echoed through the air as they exchanged vows and the bridal party’s reception entrances entertained all. An intimate cake cutting allowed for a rare private moment between the bride and groom, and the grand sparkler exit marked the beginning of their journey as husband and wife. It was a day where every detail and every candid moment painted a picture of their relationship!

JUSTIN & SARA From the Couple

Our wedding inspiration was simple, classic elegance. We wanted to accentuate the stunning outdoorvenue and reflect our style. Our “First Look” was the most special moment—a chance to be with each other privately and laugh together before the big moment. The flower aisle was our favorite part of the ceremony; the beautiful flowers created such a grand entrance and elegant walk down the aisle. Our personalized seating chart was a special touch and complemented the incredibly beautiful dance floor and surrounding seating. Our wedding was such a beautiful day. We wish we could relive it over and over again.

From the Photographer Jen and Ryan's October wedding in the quaint town of Oakhurst, California, was a celebration of love that unfolded right in the comfort of their own backyard. Surrounded by the vibrant colors of autumn, their intimate gathering radiated warmth and charm. From the elegantly decorated outdoor space to the heartfelt vows exchanged under the open sky, this backyard wedding captured the essence of romance and showcased the beauty of the valley, all in the couple’s unique style. With every detail thoughtfully curated, Jen and Ryan turned their backyard into the venue space of their dreams. Creating this labor of love was no small feat after the storms of the previous winter, but their commitment to create a memorable intimate experience for their loved ones was truly inspiring. This special day was a testament to the power of love and the joy that can be found in the most intimate of settings.

HEAD TO THE SHOOTING RANGE

SKY DIVING

A great option to spice things up or break the ice. Shooting promotes a competitive spirit as well as conversation.

Cross something off your bucket list and impress your date at the same time with a sky diving date. The adrenaline rush might just bring you closer together.

FOOD FIGHT Choose a recipe and have a friendly competition between the two of you. Either way, you get a homemade meal! For an extra challenge, source all your ingredients from the ocal farmer’s market that day.

FOOD TRUCK HUNT Track down a five-course meal on the move, the modern version of hunting and gathering.

THRIFT STORE CHALLENGE Head to your favorite thrift store and pick out an outfit for the other person. You can take this seriously or just get weird with it. Bonus points for wearing your new-to-you outfits to dinner.

TAKE A BUTCHER CLASS Find out what your date—and the inside of a pig—is made of by taking a butcher class. You'll find out if they're a secret vegan, for one thing.

When the Palace Hotel Became Urgent Care Words and Photos Provided by Terry Ommen

History

Farrow was in attendance and rushed to Chance's side. Dr. Farrow resuscitated the unconscious Fresno player, who was immediately taken to the Palace Hotel. The game was stopped as players from both teams rushed to the injured athlete’s aid. As Chance became more coherent, the Fresno team decided to return their teammate back to Fresno on the midnight train. Chance recovered from his injury. About four years later, Frank Chance debuted with the Chicago Cubs. While there, he became part of the famous double play combination known as “Tinker to Evers to Chance”. The all-time great ballplayer was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 1946. More than celebrities used the Palace for medical treatment. In August 1929, the Drake family's single-story wood-framed house near Visalia caught fire and the blaze spread quickly. Mrs. Drake tried to save some of her personal possessions, and in the process, she suffered extensive burns to her shoulders, arms, and face. Her home was totally destroyed, but she survived her injuries after she was taken to the Palace and treated by Dr. Wiese. The Palace served not only as a hospital, but also as a doctor’s office and clinic. A number of traveling medical doctors and specialists found the hotel rooms to be convenient temporary quarters to “hang out their shingles.” One such specialist was Dr. H. Ehrlich, a German-born self-described eye, ear, nose, and throat surgeon. He made regular monthly trips to Visalia in 1901 and 1902. In advance of his Palace Hotel visits, he advertised his treatments in local newspapers: “[H] undreds of people suffering with weak eyes have thrown away their glasses and are able to see again.” In the 1930s and 1940s, J.H. Matchett, a traveling chiropodist and foot specialist from Oakland, California, made regular monthly visits to Visalia promising “everlasting foot comfort.” He had plenty of local patients visiting him at his room in the Palace. After the Palace Hotel turned about 50 years old, it seemed to lose much of its glamour. In the 1930s, the Palace began transitioning from a glitzy hotel to an apartment building. Part of the reason for its decline was due to its age, but the economics of the Great Depression also played a part. By 1936, a room or apartment in the Palace Hotel rented for $15 per month which included “water, lights and a parking space.” Its glory days as a first-class hotel were over. In keeping with its medical history, the ground floor retail spaces have frequently been home to many drug stores and pharmacies over the years with names like W.B. Wells, Charette, Harriman, Adams, and Mixter’s. Today, although no guests occupy its rooms upstairs, the One of Dr. Ehrlich's advertisements that appeared in the Visalia Weekly Delta on October 24, 1901.

Palace continues to be home to retail businesses and plenty of amazing history.
