dear readers,

Issue #191 / Jan/Feb 2011

IN THIS ISSUE

In the last few issues we have featured articles on the very important topic of faith. However, a subject that is key to being able to truly live by faith and approach God with confidence, is the issue of God’s goodness.

We continue to have great companies advertising with the Herald Info, and once again encourage you to support their products and services. Remember to mention you saw their ad in the Herald Info!

KEEPING RIGHT FOCUS

Somerstrand College is abuzz with excitement following the first day of school for their Grade 1 learners. The day was very successful and has set a positive tone for the coming year.

For many, the month of January is often a time of reflection, but also of planning for the future. And depending on how you enjoyed the December period, perhaps by going on holiday and celebrating Christmas, or for some, it was possibly not a time for rejoicing at all due to adverse circumstances or events. Either way, it’s an intimate relationship with God, and an understanding of His goodness, that keeps our focus in the right place and lifts our thoughts above the circumstances: “I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” –Psalm 27:13 (NASB) The writer of the above Bible verse, king David, was experiencing trying times when he wrote this, but thankfully he gave us powerful insight into where our attention should be kept–on the fact that God is good! David knew that perfect goodness is the very essence of who God is, and therefore he could completely rely on God and expect to experience deliverance and even great blessings because of it. With this in mind, we’d like to encourage you to learn all you can about God’s character, especially His goodness–it is guaranteed to dispell despair, give you great joy in your life, and position you to receive great blessings!

Welcome and thanks to Wilf Kent who contributed Words of Wisdom in an encouraging article. Wilf offers a counselling service, based in Gordon’s Bay. Please see his advert on page 7 for further info. “The Busy Cook” has an interesting recipe: Banana Cake with...wait for it...Peanut Butter Icing! Mmmm...delicious. Check out the Activities page (Pg. 15) for a good laugh, and a challenge; can you master the Soduku #5 puzzle? There’s always something for everyone: “Kids Corner” will keep ‘em busy for a while! Lastly, our inspirational articles in this issue offer great advice on “coming out of trouble,” and how to “make a trade” of our cares and anxieties for a living relationship with God. True peace is just a “throne call” away! Herald Info wishes you the best year ever! Happy reading... till next time,

Juanita, Lesley, Isabel & Andrew

Make a Trade with God –by Joyce Meyer

D

id you know that God wants to make a trade with you? He has a standing offer every minute of every day, and it’s amazing how few of us actually take Him up on it. He wants you to give Him all your cares, problems and failures. In return, He’ll give you His peace and joy. On top of that, He promises to protect and take care of you.

Let Go of Your Worry...

God really does want to take care of us, but in order to let Him, we’ve got to stop trying to take care of ourselves and worrying about every little thing we can’t control. Many people would like for God to take care of them, but they insist on worrying or trying to figure out an answer on their own instead of waiting for His direction. They wallow around in puddles of their own worry, wondering why God doesn’t give them peace. God will give us peace, but we must first give Him our worries. We give God our worries by trusting that He can and will take care of us. By trusting God, we’re able to rest in Him, knowing that He has the situation well under control. Worry, on the other hand, is the opposite of trust. Worry steals our peace, wears us out physically, and can even make us sick. If we’re worrying, we’re not fully trusting God, and we’ll never be able to experience His peace.

...and Pick Up God’s Peace!

signs that provide direction or give warning. If you pay attention to the signs and follow their instructions, you will safely reach your destination. In the same way, on the road of life there are spiritual signs along the way. In order to stay under God’s protection, you must obey these signs that tell you to trust Him and not worry. Don’t be afraid; have courage. If you’ll pay attention to these signs, you’ll find it’s easy to stay on course. You’ll experience the protection, peace and joy that only God can provide. However, if you fail to heed the signs, you may notice that the road seems a little bumpier than usual, and you aren’t as confident in your ability as you once were. You may become anxious about the unknown things waiting around the corner, and even veer off the road.

Focus on Today

Anxiety is like putting on a heavy coat on a hot summer day. It weighs you down. It’s difficult to move and stifling to wear. According to Webster’s Dictionary, anxiety is “a state of being uneasy, apprehensive or worried...” Sometimes this uneasiness is really vague—something we just can’t put our finger on. All we know is that we’re uneasy.

What a great trade! We give God our worry, and He gives us His peace. We give Him all our cares and concerns, and He gives us His protection, stability and joy. That’s the privilege of being cared for by Him.

You and I don’t need to be anxious about tomorrow when we have all we can handle today. Even if we manage to solve all our problems today, we’ll just have more to deal with tomorrow...and more the next day.

Because He cares for us, He wants us to live in peace and not be all tied up in knots of worry. He has ways of guiding us toward peace if we’re alert enough to sense His direction.

Why waste time worrying when it’s not going to solve anything? Why be anxious about yesterday, which is gone, or tomorrow, which hasn’t arrived yet? Trade in your worries today for God’s peace.

Imagine that you’re driving down a road. Along the way, there are

bring the surrounding temperature down by a couple of degrees. During the high temperature summer days remember to add more water to trees, even those that are established, to alleviate the tree’s thirst and leaf shedding due to evaporation. Watering of trees should happen either early morning or late afternoon to have the maximum effect on the tree. When watering trees remember that slow watering (water trickling from the hose) over an hour or ten will ensure good water penetration through the soil and be more effective.

Something Cooler...

Keep in mind that trees will conserve their energy in the heat of summer. Growth speed above ground will reduce to little and will pick up in autumn again when temperatures are cooler, while root growth still increases to support the tree with nutrients and moisture. Mulching trees will certainly help keeping moisture in the ground and cooler soil temperature. Trees grown in containers can be planted right through the year, not only autumn or winter (like in the old days when we visited nurseries and bought a bare rooted tree), provided that they get sufficient regular water. Good shade trees are Stinkwood (Celtis sinensis), Wild Plum (Harpephyllum caffrum), Water Oak (Quercus nigra), London Plane (Platanus x acerifolia) and Pin Oak (Quercus palustris)

DETOXIFICATION EFFECTS If you take the minimum dose of 10–15 drops in water, 1x a day and experience unpleasant detoxification effects of headaches, lethargy or skin irritations which are caused by your body’s heightened metabolic responses to getting rid of waste, try to either reduce or increase the dose – depending on how comfortable you feel with the response you’re experiencing. The lower the dose, the slower the detox response; the higher the dose, the faster the detox response. WHAT IF I’M ON MEDICATION? ‘Oxygen Boost’ can be safely used with other supplements or medication. It actually increases the effectiveness of other substances as the body’s metabolic rate is raised by oxygen, enabling it to work more efficiently. However, if pregnant or under medical care, do check first with practitioner before using. WHAT IF I DON’T “FEEL ANYTHING”? If you don’t ‘feel anything’, it does NOT mean that ‘Oxygen Boost’ is not working. Deep in your body, at the cellular level, ‘Oxygen Boost’ is raising your metabolic response to viruses, bacteria, parasites and other pathogens. It is also strengthening the immune system. ‘Oxygen Boost’ also helps neutralize acidity in the body, it is well known that excessive acidity distorts DNA formation, thereby contributing to damaged tissue, which can in turn result in chronic disease. TIP: To boost alkalinity even further, try using ‘Oxygen Boost’ with Life Leader’s ‘Dietary Mineral Supplement’ – over 70 minerals, most in the tiny colloid form that occurs in nature. HOW IT WORKS Life Leader’s ‘Oxygen Boost’ is ALKALINE, making it 30x more effective than other acidic brands. The alkalinity of ‘Oxygen Boost’ can actually be measured electrically, like this: The voltage of a glass of pH7 (neutral) water would be about 30 millivolts. The strength of the water molecule is high and the oxygen is completely trapped. Now, if you add ‘Oxygen Boost’, the voltage would drop drastically to about 0,7 of a millivolt, indicating that the water molecule has weakened enormously. The Oxygen is now much freer and can be used by the body. The above is called ‘atomic binding’. The Alkaline state reduces atomic binding 30 times more than the acidic state.Alkalinity is the Life Leader mission. Nothing works efficiently if alkalinity is not the basic state of the body.

P

eople are God’s heart. He wants all of us to come to repentance, and He will use us to usher them in. Being a beacon of hope to others is a calling that all Christians should embrace. There are so many different ways in which we can be an example of Christ to others but the most important of these is ‘Love’. People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care! Our lives may be the only Bible that some people may ever read. That’s why, as Christians, we should establish a culture of loving others effectively through acts of kindness. People will more readily understand that God loves them when our lives practically speak of Jesus. Everyday we are finding out who our neighbours are. It’s the people right in front of us, the ones who are in our friendship circles, at work, at school.. The cry of our heart should be “Lord break my heart with the things that break your heart”. When we reach out and touch someone else, we touch God’s heart. Every single one of us has a sphere of influence that someone else doesn’t have. We must never underestimate the power of simply sowing kind-

ness or telling someone that Jesus loves them. Let’s allow God to stir our heart so that we are able to be Jesus to people. St Francis said that we should ‘preach always and if necessary use words’. Action it seems, speaks a whole lot louder than words. ‘If there is any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.” William Penn

Faith without Good Deeds Is Dead “What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good- bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?” I like what Heidi Baker of Iris Ministries says: “Just showing kindness and loving someone– that’s the gospel, it’s that simple. Remember, the Gospel is only good news when it is delivered on time.

very Christian has the responsibility to establish the ministry of the church within their sphere of influence. This should support the work of the whole church to the glory of God. So, if you can start a prayer ministry, or engage in some form of outreach, or just form a group that offers support and study, you are one step closer to making the church the powerful force of transformation that God intends it to be. By now I hope you’re asking, ‘Where can I begin to establish the church in the marketplace in order to honour God most effectively? Ed Silvoso sums it up most succinctly when he says that the target of the church should be the world and not the pew. One of the most important verses from scripture for the marketplace minister to memorise is this one: ‘...on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades (hell) will not overcome it’ (Matt 16:18). Firstly, it’s Jesus who builds the church and secondly, when Jesus said the gates of hell would not overpower it, there is the clear assumption that He builds his church at the gates of hell. One of the most loving things we can do with the church is to “send it to hell”. We need to find the places of suffering, brokenness and need, and be the church in those places so that Jesus can build His church there. Bread of Heaven Andy Loughton, a marketplace minister from a local Helderberg

Church, is an example of a person that did just that. Andy loves the Lord, but of equal importance, Andy loves the people that the Lord loves. One of Andy’s businesses is a bakery in the centre of our town. The area close to the bakery is a popular place for homeless people to congregate. A minister is a servant who operates under the authority of the King. What do you think Jesus would have done if he had been the owner of Bread of Heaven Bakeries? Of course, He would have used this business to minister to the needy. Thankfully, Andy thinks as Jesus does, and so in his mind Bread of Heaven was a prime opportunity to establish the Church in the marketplace! Wherever you have need and you have a Christian in the same location you can be sure that Jesus wants to do something special. So Andy began to establish the church in a simple way-as a bakery he could provide some bread to feed the hungry, but he could also provide the bread of life (see John 6:35). In a place where the churches of our community were seldom active you will now find the church meeting daily. The hungry are fed and the gospel is preached. Bread of Heaven has become a little like the story of Ephesus – so many lives have been changed because of Andy’s obedience that many in our community are beginning to hear the Good News.

hen they heard that Job was in serious trouble, his friends Eliphaz, Bildad and Zohhar came to comfort him. They traveled long distances and when they saw his condition they tore their clothing and sat on the ground grieving in stark silence for seven days. They dearly loved him, their desires to help were sincere and their motives noble. Sadly, the help they offered was misguided. There is an inherent flaw with all help that comes from human sources. It is limited to our ability. The counsel we give cannot go beyond our experiences or biases. All three of Job’s friends were dogmatic legalists. This mindset influenced everything they said and did. Eliphaz claimed remarkable spiritual experiences and insight from God. Much like today’s “God told me so” spiritualists. Visions, dreams and “divine insights” give him irrefutable knowledge. “Who can argue with God? If God told me then who are you to disagree?” Bildad rested his knowledge upon tradition. Proverbs, clichés and religious rhetoric guided his counsel. “This is the way it has been done and is an accepted fact. It is the way it must be done!” Zophar assumed to know all about God and His will for man. His vast storehouse of spiritual knowledge gave him confidence to speak into Job’s life. What he said was accurate but his premise was faulty. Every superstructure that is built on a flawed foundation will fall. In Job’s case, his friends were sincere but their limited experiences and knowledge led them to a false conclusion. In the final end, their help was damaging. So it is with each of us who desire to help someone in need. We are hindered by our limitations. Job’s friends assumed that he was being punished by God for his sins. “If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in your tents. Surely then you will lift up your face without blemish; you will be secure, and will not fear. You will forget your misery; you will remember it as waters that have passed away. And your life will be brighter than the noonday; its darkness will be like the morning. And you will have confidence, because there is hope; you will be protected and take your rest in safety. You will lie down, and none will make you afraid; many will entreat your

favor.” (Job 11:14-18) Many sincere Christians are earnestly seeking God for healing from an illness, praying for a wayward son or daughter, pleading for a job or financial help, asking for direction or believing for an improvement in a marriage. They are open to direction only to be demoralized by some sincere but misguided help with words like, “You have sinned,” or “You have no faith,” or “You don’t understand God,” or “You fail to apply what God provides for your circumstances.” Indeed, all these statements can be true and can be applied to everyone. But not knowing the secrets of man’s heart or the will of God, such misguided statements are accusatory and only serve to add condemnation to the suffering person. Point people to Jesus and pray that God will illuminate the bewildered mind. Remember that there is no sin so great that the blood of Jesus cannot forgive, no pain that His comfort cannot ease, no sorrow so heavy that His Joy cannot lift and no need so great that He is unable to supply. His grace is sufficient! His mercy has no limits known to men. “For out of His infinite riches in Jesus, He giveth and giveth and giveth again!” WOW! These are Words Of Wisdom we can live by! A Personal Note Don’t depend upon your understanding nor the counsel of men. Seek His face and fully trust the Lord. Make a concerted effort to praise Him in every circumstance. Listen to His voice. He speaks in most unusual ways and when you hear Him, you will know that it is He. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” – Jesus (John 10:27) Wilfred R. GOD AND THE LOTTERY A blonde woman named Barbara found herself in dire trouble. Her business had gone bust and she was in serious financial trouble. She was so desperate that she decided to ask God for help. She began to pray. “God, please help me. I’ve lost my business and if I don’t get some money, I’m going to lose my house as well. Please let me win the Lotto.” Lotto night came and somebody else won. Barbara again prayed. “God, please let me win the Lotto! I’ve lost my business, my house and I’m going to lose my car as well.” Lotto night came and Barbara

still had no luck. Once again she prayed. “My God, why have you forsaken me? I’ve lost my business, my house and my car. My children are starving. I don’t often ask you for help and I have always been a good servant to you. Please just let me win the Lotto this one time so I can get my life back in order.” Suddenly there was a blinding flash of light as the heavens opened and Barbara was confronted by the voice of God himself. “Barbara, you are going to have to meet me halfway on this. Buy a ticket.”.

CAN’T GET OUT An airline captain was helping a new blonde flight attendant prepare for her first overnight trip. Upon their arrival, the captain showed the flight attendant the best place for airline personnel to eat, shop and stay overnight. The next morning, as the pilot was preparing the crew for the day’s route, he noticed the new stewardess was

missing. He called her at the hotel to ask what happened to her. She was crying when she answered the phone. “I can’t get out of the room!” “Why not?” the captain asked. “There are only three doors,” she sobbed. “One is the bathroom, one is the closet and one has a sign on it that says ‘Do Not Disturb’!”.

Coming out of It is important to understand that God knows how to bring you out of trouble. There is nothing God doesn’t know how to handle. Psalms 34 outlines eight steps to follow to come out of trouble. 1. The first thing to do is pray. Verse four begins, “I sought the Lord.” Your part is to pray and invite Him into your life. 2. You must trust God. “Blessed is the man who trusts in Him” (Psalms 34:8). Put the whole balance of your life, your security, in the Lord. Rely on the character, strength and ability of God to deliver you. Fear and unbelief, which are a lack of trust in God, will hinder or stop you from receiving God’s help. 3. Fear the Lord. This does not mean to be afraid of Him, but to give Him honor and respect. Take whatever you find in the Word, knowing it is true, and put it into your life. When God speaks, quickly make changes or adjustments. 4. Seek the Lord with all your heart. Listen to the prompting of the inward witness. The counsel of God will deliver you out of trouble. God will protect you, keeping you safe from injury, harm and destruction. He will preserve you by instructing and teaching you, but you must make the effort to listen and learn. Trusting Him causes His mercy to surround you. 5. Don’t criticize and judge others. Brother Copeland says there are two times to pray for a person—when he’s right and when he’s wrong. It is the Lord’s job,

not ours, to “bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts” (I Corinthians 4:5). Your part is to “keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit” (Psalms 34:13). 6. Depart from evil. Psalms 34:14 says, “Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” Consider yourself dead to sin and alive unto God. When sin calls your name, don’t respond to it. When God calls your name, be quick to respond. 7. Determine to do good (verse 14). You are to be like Jesus. Jesus of Nazareth went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil (Acts 10:38). Be busy doing good, praying and ministering to others. 8. Seek peace. Don’t be the one who brings discord, quarreling, fighting and strife. Instead, be the one who brings peace, calmness and harmony (verse 14). Receiving God’s power and deliverance is not automatic. Your deliverance is controlled by how you see God, how you treat God, how you listen to Him and how you obey Him. You must come to a new place of faith and trust in God. You will never be able to fathom with your mind the counsel of the Lord. His wise counsel may even appear to us to be foolishness. But He is far smarter than we are. When you seek God, trust Him, hear His counsel and do what He tells you, He will bring you out of trouble. Visit Kenneth Copeland Ministries at www.kcm.org.za

The Best Decision Ever If you do not know Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, pray the following and in turn make Jesus your Lord. Heavenly Father, I come to You in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says, ‘Whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved’ and ‘If you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved’ (Acts 2:21, Rom 10:9-10). I take you at Your Word. I confess that Jesus is Lord, and I believe in my heart that You raised Him from the dead. Thank you for coming into my heart, for giving me Your Holy Spirit as You have promised, and for being Lord over my life. Amen! If you have prayed this prayer, please write and let us know of your decision at lesley@heraldinfo.co.za
