“Walk the Turtle”

Purpose To Destiny

metamorphosis of transitions occur during our process of selfchange, significant routines become a thing of the past as we see moments pass.

Slowly the currents of time chisel away at our youth of yesterday, creating lines and wrinkles of wisdom as the foolishness diminishes inside. Wildness and rebellion within our spirit eventually becomes a humble voice of inspiration, hope, and guidance as we uplift the tears of another. A snail pace process emerges and is felt by the human heart, a message from the soul is given as we trust our journey is guided by our creator. Walk the turtle with faith knowing God’s in control of each step of this gift we call life, belief in your visions and dreams is your purpose to destiny.

If you can wow them in those first pages and chapters, paint a good picture of your characters or in some way, grab them, you might get to the next step in consideration to publish your book.

any of us are familiar with Captain "Sully" Sullenberger. A movie starring Tom Hanks was made about his January 15, 2009 landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River off Manhattan after both engines were disabled by a bird strike. As a result of Sully's experience, expertise, and execution ALL 155 PEOPLE ABOARD SURVIVED! Talk about ability to execute. (Sully: Miracle on the Hudson [2016] by Warner). Sully is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy (1973) and received the Outstanding Cadet in Airmanship award, as the class "top flyer". He retired from US Airways after 30 years as a commercial pilot on March 3, 2010. Talk about experience. Whenever there is a problem or crisis, we all like to know that the people handling the issue and in control are experienced and can execute, just like "Sully" did. Those individuals tend to have done a lot of tough stuff and have the scars to prove it. Yet the current state of professional investing is a bit different. As we make our way through critical geopolitical issues and struggle with economic decisions; many veteran fund managers are exiting the business (Bloomberg article). Less than half of current fund managers have any experience of financial crisis (Bloomberg article). For more than 75% of fund managers, the Dotcom Crash and Black Monday are like ancient history. According to a recent survey, it appears (Continued from page 2)

twist for readers to see how a publisher might view books that are on the market. In most cases, these are books that are self-published, but not always. We hope you enjoy reading the “Vew from LeRue”.

Happy New Year 2019 that less than half of fund managers have been through even one market crash (Quartz article). The last one was 10 years ago. Many people "professionally" managing money today have never experienced a real downturn or the volatility that goes with it. Virtually non-existent volatility of markets since 2008 means that experience in even a moderate downturn is largely absent. In February, the long-awaited volatility finally appeared in stock markets. A 10% decline over 10 days, something that has only happened 19 times since World War II (CNBC article). Now, we have bear market with worst December since the Great Depression in 1931 (CNN article). However, many investors have only known good times, easy money and easy (passive) performance due to greatest bull market of all time. They have not experienced a real bear market or recession! So where is the experienced "Sully"? I AM A FUND MANAGER who has been through real downturn, financial crisis, and market crash! From firsthand experience I can tell you; it is now incumbent that investment be more spread-out, thoughtful and intelligent. Past performance alone is NEVER an asset acquisition strategy with any longevity. The decision to invest requires in-depth evaluation of outlook for the future. Funds with active management that have this acute understanding will thrive; however, those that don't will die! It's Darwinian and just that simple. (Continued on page 5)

The Odyssey of Art O’Hara by John Loranger: 3 Chapter View

T

he Odyssey of Art O’Hara , a fictionalized history of the USS Indianapolis is a first novel for John Loranger. The characters come alive as you read Though this is only the first 3 chapters, you immediately get to know the main character, Art O’Hara. Lorangers writing style is friendly.though he avoids colloquialisms. His writing leans toward a more formal style, but it does not negatively affect the story. The characters seem real and the descriptions make you feel like you are on the ship, standing at attention or smoking a cigarette with one of your shipmates.. LeRue Press, if we were in the market for fiction, would ask the author for the full manuscript for consideration.

Brian (BTS): First off Germaine, I would like to know what started you on this amazing journey you’ve been on. How did you become the networking machine you are today? What tips can you give folks about networking? Germaine Moody (GM): Thanks Brian. For me it all started on LinkedIn when I received an invitation to my first networking event. It was being held in Los Angeles but I was in Atlanta at the time filming a music video, and wasn’t going to be able to make the trip. I was disturbed that I couldn’t go while fascinated at the fact that hundreds of people were coming together to connect. So fascinated, in fact, that I contacted the organizer to tell me his secrets and how to produce similar events. (Continued on page 10)

n our house, we have had a tradition to start the year with shrimp being cooked at midnight. Not sure why, to be honest, but our dad always cooked it at midnight and we all ate at least one to start the new year. My mom said it was for luck, but as the years progressed, she didn’t stay up until midnight but still ate shrimp before she went to bed. Who knows, right?

Traditions: It’s Time I knew a couple who always ate fish on New Year’s Day. I’m not extremely superstitious, but in 2019, I decided it’s time to begin new traditions. We won’t throw out the old, just begin some new. I found a great recipe for shrimp scampi as an hors d’oeuvres and I’ll be adding that as a tradition annually if it is something everyone enjoys. Maybe it will double wammy our luck! We traditionally semi-close our (Continued on page 15)

Sappho Book Review

S

imilar to Emily Bronte, Sappho fascinates men and women from all over the world. Perhaps this is due to certain combinations that are very much present in the works of these two gifted artists: intelligence and passion, cheerfulness and despair, sensuality and spirituality. Such contrasts have a certain attraction and appeal. And, of course, much of the fascination is rooted in the aura of mystery that surrounds both women. But if Emily Bronte remains a rather enigmatic figure, Sappho is more so. All that is known about her with a fair degree of certainty is that she was a Greek poet and singer who lived on the island of Lesbos during the sixth century B.C. Virtually everything else that we have heard about her is a product of guesswork or imagination. The book that I have read and re-read over the years is a translation by Mary Barnard (published in 1958). I have also made use of a volume from the Loeb Classical Library that has the Greek and English on facing pages. The latter version drives home the fact that Sappho’s literary remains are largely fragmentary (and that I am inept where the Greek language is concerned). On the other hand, the Mary Barnard translation is structured in a much more cohesive way. The result is a poetic masterpiece. This edition contains a hundred of Sappho’s poems, most of which are as brief and stark as the following: ‘Standing by my bed / In gold sandals / Dawn that very moment awoke me’. The subject matter of her compositions is diverse. The one that is titled “Although clumsy” draws the attention of her friends to the little-noticed shapeliness of someone named Mnasidica. Or sometimes the poet addresses herself: ‘What, Sappho, can you give one who has everything, like Aphrodite?’ She expresses tender love for her daughter, Cleis, or she invokes a divine blessing upon someone else who is dear to her. Like a Greek variation of haiku, Sappho’s poetry is often rendered in the present-tense—as when she describes the noontime chirps of crickets, or girls dancing in the spring twilight, or the silvery light of a full moon. She sings about the joys and torments of love, or she sorrows over capricious friendships and the pain of loneliness. She can be vain and spiteful but also deeply philosophical: ‘We know this much / Death is an evil; we have the gods’ word for it; they too would die if death were a good thing’. A reader could skim through the Barnard translation within an hour, but that would be the wrong way to experience these gems

of antiquity. I would suggest listening to some classical Greek lyre music (available on YouTube) before or even during one’s reading of Sappho. In any case, the contents of this book should be absorbed in an attentive, sympathetic and leisurely manner.

John Loranger was born in Butte, Montana in 1961 but has spent most of his life in Nevada. He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before retiring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fiction and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt". His approach to fiction is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure. A good book gives the reader pleasure, the sort of deep, abiding pleasure he likes to come back to."

Perspectives from many sides

It has been a volatile period in history with dramatic splits between people and parties. Rather than maintaining silence, What’s the Story™ would like to contribute some common sense, down to earth, people-focused OPINIONS. These do not reflect our view necessarily; they reflect the views of people who identify as one of the parties listed. If you belong to one of these parties, your view might be different than what is expressed. That is to be expected. Our goal is to provide perspectives and contribute to the conversation, not by yelling, anger or disruption but by sharing as many views as we can allowing EVERYONE to express their First Amendment right to Freedom Of Speech. “Of the people, by the people, for the people”.

ouble standards. People world-wide use them every day. They are applied to situations of all types, from racial relations to romantic entanglements. While once regarded as abhorrent by most people, they seem accepted practice in today’s society. The practice of using double standards is still somewhat paretic, yet are the language of politicians and plumbers alike. When politicians scream about deficits and call to cut social programs, yet in the same bills give huge tax-breaks to billionaires, these standards are applied. Societies scream in protest every time one side gains a major advantage over another, yet nothing seems to curb the use of divisive language. Whether the situation is a racial protest or a violent encounter, doublestandards are often at the center. Recently, the case of Cyntoia Brown, who was sentenced to fifty-one years in prison for killing a “John” while working as a prostitute was held in protest. She ran away from home at fourteen, was held captive, forced into sexual slavery, assaulted repeatedly before being turned out on to the streets. Her crime, while certainly murder, was also understandable given the

ur very two party system was designed to have a double standard. When Utah became a state, the Feds went door to door and registered one house democrats and the next house republican. Why? To create division. Was it Jefferson who said, the party system would destroy the protection of the constitution as the parties argued over petty issues. And thus it is. Why is it ok when your party is doing it ,and wrong when the other party does it. It’s because of the double standard. “a double minded man is unstable in all his ways” (Bible). It’s no longer about what is right in America, it’s about who is right. Try that in marriage; be the one that never backs down, the one who can never admit a mistake, never man up, but is always covering up. How long will that marriage survive? In America we have a rotten marriage, especially in Washington. Washington has become the mirror of the people. Have we all lost our minds? Well maybe, but for sure, we have lost our conscience. We are no longer guided by morality, virtue or principle; the very fabric of a unified marriage and government. All that seems to matter anymore

ne of the great political debacles that our society is dealing with currently involves a Two-Tiered Justice System or otherwise known as a Double Standard within our judiciary. It seems that if you have been involved with the Trump campaign, you’re guilty of Russian collusion that has massively damaged our national security, but you’re only charged with minor, unrelated offenses. However, the flip side is that if you were involved with the corrupt Obama Administration, you’re given immunity from any prosecution for any event. For example, while Hillary was in charge of the State Department, six billion dollars went missing (with no one held accountable). Using an unauthorized server and deleting over 30,000 subpoena emails, she compromised national security as well as violated laws that were in place to protect our country (with no one held accountable). Hillary and Obama both signed off on giving Russia 20% of our uranium in which the Clinton foundation received a $145 million dollar donation (I didn’t know that the Russians were that generous!). Obama sent over $150 billion to Iran---listed as a state sponsor of terrorism (he is not held accountable), not to mention numerous ethics violations.

Realizing the necessity of people, the power of inclusion, and the gift of opportunity allowed me to connect with the entire world, and then create partnerships and projects with people all over. I give several networking tips, laws to be exact, in my upcoming 2019 book The Laws of Networking, but one of the greatest tips I can give now would be to make yourself visible by learning how to market yourself. Networking is serious business and the least expensive and fastest way to advance your life. Movers and shakers are attracted to leaders and people

who are doing great and big things. Put yourself out there for people to see you, and the world will contact you. ost of the time, Radio Talk Show Hosts get all the credit, when the truth of the matter is that without a good/great Chief Engineer, nothing is worth a "hill of beans" to the most important person in radio, the listener. Our Chief Engineer, Craig Moss, is in my opinion one of the very VERY best in the Nation. He has even helped some of the talk show hosts with question and one time, even produced a song with Keith Galliher Jr., and the original artist, who was actually dead at the time. I know, like we all tend to do, is for you to say "Mine is better than yours!". I sincerely doubt it and if I have to say it in Southern Boy Terms, I will. F I invest in SILVER and it returns to its once all time high on the stock market, then I will be living like royalty. I’ve been hearing this lie on TV for the past ten years and it ‘ain’t’ done no returning!!…in fact it barely holds its own under current trading. Same for gold! IF I donate …say, $19.00 a month… to a wellrespected disaster relief agency, (and there are plenty of those) survivors of hurricanes, tornadoes and such will have their lives put back together again. Well, I’ve done that and not surprisingly those formerly well respected thieves took all the money and the survivors got little or nothing. Remember a few years ago when a terrible storm devastated the gulf coast and the famed ‘Cross of Red’ appealed to Americans and took in multimillions of dollars. Some of the money did actually go to survivors, but the C of R kept most of the money for “future disasters” Hey, what about “THIS disaster?” Another scam-like venture is emerging as we speak. GO FUND ME groups, some, perhaps many, are well-meaning. They beg for money for people with heart-rending illnesses, accidents, or misfortunes and many of those monies somehow gets lost in family disputes and at best end up in complex scholarships that rarely address the immediate needs of the injured. Google has done a

Worthy Choices good service by documenting the fraud that is taking place here. I can list numerous agencies that solicit monies for “worthy” causes such as hopelessly crippled military men and women, homeless throngs of impoverished masses, kids with clef palates and missing or deformed limbs, and other dreadful infirmities affecting tens of thousands world-wide. Of course, cancers and heart attacks continue to be the biggest destroyers of lives and they need vast amounts of money to continue research, but they too seem to fall into the trap and untold sums are lost in redundant research and overhead costs and are not used for their expressed purposes. Americans are generous to a fault and traditionally have contributed to most appeals that seemingly benefit the poor, the sick, the injured and I am comfortable supporting those causes. I just hate to see this generosity used in ways where those huge sums never filter down to the needy. circumstance. The double standard comes in when you realize the person she murdered was a wealthy Caucasian and she is not. She claimed to fear for her life, because he had threatened her with violence and possessed firearms. It becomes even more apparent when Jacob Anderson, a student at Baylor University, plead guilty to sexual assault was given three months’ house arrest and three years’ probation. The details of the case are beyond heinous and defined by forcible rape (the victim was bound and gagged), but these facts had no effect on his sentence. He is Caucasian. From a good family (according to the judge). Thanks to a generous plea deal, this young man will never go to jail, escape having to register as a sex-offender and once his probation ends, will be free. His life, while interrupted, will eventually go on as if nothing happened. Brown will spend most of her life in prison. Of course, this is not the only example of racially motivated double standard. Almost every week in the United States, officer involved shootings occur where unarmed civilians of color are shot during confrontations with police, yet white suspects in similar situations are given latitude. Just two years ago, a white man held police at bay for eleven hours, fired hundreds of rounds at them before surrendering without incident. Can you imagine the outcome if the same incident occurred in a different neighborhood and the suspect were black instead of white? Is this lack of training? Or something institutional. Societies must battle against double standards. Their source is fearbased and are examples of the worst human instinct. It ranks with racism and sexism. As a society, double standards must join these discriminatory practices as a remnant of our collective past.

is how one feels. From the 70s we used to sing, ” If it feels good do it; do it if it’s what you feel”. We have become a nation of unhealthy feelers. Our nation was founded by men and women who were thinkers. Being a principle-based nation, one may first ask; what is right? Thinker! Instead of who is right? Feeler. We will continue to descend in the downward struggle of each failed Empire unless we adopt a principle like Abe Lincoln “When I do right, I feel right”. It’s not about being right, it’s about what is right. Until then, THEY will continue to divide. Out of chaos comes order. The double standard of all Americans has contributed to the chaos we are experiencing, and will continue to experience so long as we live without conscience. Is it too late? Perhaps. During the national crisis of the civil war, Lincoln finally realized the only salvation for the nation was national repentance. He chided the north when he said “As a nation of freemen we must live for all time or die by suicide.” I suppose even today heaven could give us another chance if we repented of our double mindedness, repented of the two party system, and restored the constitution as the political religion of the nation. If the chaos continues we will have order, a new world order. Perhaps that is why THEY create so much chaos. We don’t have to wait for another national crisis, take your pick.

I blame the massive corruption in DC on the American people. By installing Obama as our president, we allowed this corruption cancer to spread rapidly throughout our capitol city…and then we voted him in a second time, we validated his performance! It’s like we were sending a signal that corruption is ok and not a big deal. As long as it doesn’t affect you personally, then you are probably like many others and can allow these anomalies to slide. I believe that corruption extends to both sides of the aisle, but, I also believe that the Republicans are the lesser of the two evils. The American people better regain control of our country or we’ll lose it and our way of life as we know it today. Is this the legacy that we want to leave our children? I think not. We need to clean up this massive corruption…now, that is plaguing our nation. Someone asked me the other day, “What can we do about it?” I replied, “Vote Republican!” Let’s not screw up the 2020 election like we did the 2018 election. Let’s send the Democrats a clear and precise message that they can hear and understand…the American people won’t stand for corruption, obstruction and resistance and that we embrace the winning that President Trump is delivering for our country! Let’s give the House and Senate to the Republicans and allow Mr. Trump to work his magic for the country… what do you have to lose?

shop at the end of December. This year was no different. But wow, what a project we started. We are revamping the shop to allow for more efficiency but it looks like a disaster area. This is not going to get done in a few days, but when we are finished, it will be a much better place to work for us and provide better service to our customers.

We opened a small space in the Nevada Marketplace in 2018. In 2019, we will slowly add new products. We recently began selling some cute bags (pictured here). During Artown, we began repurposing books and added folded books. They have been a hit! Especially the hearts. They make great gifts and later this year, we’ll offer them personalized and hope to have a whole new line, also available to be personalized. Our print on demand was another new development that was a 2017-2018 project. This year, we were very busy during the holidays printing and binding books for our customers. We even had a young lady who did just one book. She had a journal she wanted bound for her father as

a gift. Luckily, we were able to get it done just in time for Christmas. Of course, self-published authors were busy too working to get their books finished so they would be ready to sell during the Christmas and holiday season. We are grateful to be able to fulfill many authors dreams. And now, customers that want to gift a book is something we can do too. Happy writing everyone. Happy New Year 2019. Cheers!
