Because she wanted to have her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren read them, she avoided the typical format of sauciness associated with limericks and “kept them clean” and readable for all ages. Her first paperback book, Naming Your Baby was published in 2010 using the 1000 top baby names and their rankings from the Social Security list to create limericks and provide meanings of many of the names. (No, not 1000; she was not that ambitious). She even included what she would name her children if she had the choice again. I could have been Michaela and I could have a brother named Quentin! Ruby went on to write her memoir, Working on 100, which is still being edited. At 95, she is not writing much, but used her time well when she did. An avid reader, Ruby could read more books in a week than

n 2008, LeRue was seeking new ways to expand the company and its mission. We published a magazine called The LeRue Review and added some “History of” to the website. When Mom, (Ruby) who was 86 at the time, saw what we were doing, she decided she needed to participate. Though she had not written much except for narratives regarding insurance and her employees, (she was a supervisor for the Auto Club of Southern California for almost 30 years) she decided to write her own “history ofs”. Her stories were cute and creative, though not commercially viable, but good enough for her daughters and daughter -in-law to add to the website and include in The LeRue Review. During her writing journey, she also found she liked to write limericks. Ruby Szudajski, the “Rue” in “LeRue” Editor: Janice Hermsen: janice@lrpnv.com

An Interview with Todd E. Barley Director and Film Maker

I

'm honored to welcome Director and Film Maker Todd E. Barley to the BTS Entertainment Corner. Todd has several films to his credit, web series and shot music videos, including "Big Time" a single from the band "Great White" off their new album.

you wear it like a badge of honor. What do you think about the state of Independent films today; do you see this part of the movie industry growing?

Brian: First, Todd, how did you get into film making?

Todd: Honestly, for filmmakers today the digital age has just been a godsend for those of us who don't have a lot of money but still want to make movies. Showing your films online is another godsend because everybody can see your movies. You're not limited to just whatever you can muster up in your friends that you can get together to see your work. It's just been awesome to be able to share my work, our work, with the world. And because of it, also making some great contacts and friends in the industry.

Todd: I got into filmmaking when I was about 8 years old. I originally wanted to be an animator and I wanted to work for Disney but after watching TV shows like Starsky and Hutch, SWAT, and Beretta I had made the decision at probably 10 years old that I wanted to make movies. My mother worked for the McDonald's Corporation Television Production facility which I gained even more knowledge and wanting to make films.

Brian: Who and/or what do you attribute your film Brian: I really respect your "Indie film" feel and the way

Kafka’s Stories and Novels

F

ranz Kafka, insurance agent and literary genius, died from tuberculosis in 1924 at the age of forty. While alive, he had published very little and then, near the end, had told a friend to burn what remained of his unpublished manuscripts. That friend, Max Brod, told Kafka that he could never do such a thing—and he didn’t. For readers who are new to Kafka, the best place to start is his novella, “The Metamorphosis”. The protagonist, Gregor Samsa, a dutiful son and a loving brother, wakes one morning to discover that he has become a gigantic insect. No explanation is given. We are immersed here in a fantasy- or dreamrealm, but every detail is portrayed so effectively that the story seems almost believable. At some level it is believable, even realistic. Gregor’s plight concerns the inevitable isolation of us all: by way of aging, sickness, disability, mental illness and

the like. Physically, Gregor has become an insect; but internally his human nature is fully intact. The predicament is both comical and excruciating, and the death of Gregor is one of the saddest descriptions I have ever read. In addition to numerous short stories, Kafka wrote three novels. I have never been a fan of “The Castle” and have never made it all the way through “Amerika”, but “The Trial” has been a favorite of mine from way back. Like “The Metamorphosis”, its protagonist, Joseph K., wakes one morning to find himself in a bizarre difficulty from which he will never be able to extricate himself. In this instance the difficulty is an arrest for an unnamed crime. Joseph K. spends the remainder of his life in pursuit of answers or avenues of escape, only to meet with one outlandish frustration after another. The dream-atmosphere that is present throughout the narrative attains an especially vivid intensity during the penultimate chapter

making style to? Todd: I never really thought I had a style. Somebody the other day said that they know when they're watching one of my films which is weird because I never try to do the same thing twice. I'm always trying to up my game and make the next project better than the last project whether it's with how I light or if it's the subject matter or camera angles. We just try to have a lot of fun with what we do although I do take it very seriously and I'm very passionate about being a filmmaker; especially an indie filmmaker. Brian: I like the fact you do horror, but then will do something from another genre just as well. Were you born eclectic or did it become a necessity? How did it develop? Todd: Actually the horror genre is not something that I necessarily enjoy shooting just because I like telling more dramatic stories. Which is why I tried in Misfit to add a lot of backstory to our main character and show her home life on top of giving the character a little more depth than just being a killer. I think too many horror films nowadays are more about how gory they are versus being scary. I don't mind the gore but to me that shouldn't be just the basis for a horror film. Once again I really like telling more dramatic stories but the horror genre basically what it comes down to is that seems to be where you can make a bigger impact and the money isn't too shabby with it either. Brian: I’m a big "Jaws" fan; you are as well. Hell, you made a film about it. Please tell us about that experience, how did you come to make the film?

Todd: Jaws Finatics came out of the fact that the documentary that was done about the shark is still working. They cut out an entire section that was about the Jaws fans. And a lot of us were really ticked off about that. Because the movie hasn't sustained itself just on its own; it has to have those of us who watch it pass the torch to the Next Generation. So I decided since I knew so many Jaws fans that I was going to get as many of them as I could to record their own interviews and talk about their experiences and why they continue to love the movie so much. And it's fun to watch because every interview is different; everybody's camera angles are different; everybody has their own energy, and it makes it really fun to watch and hear the stories. Brian: Speaking of "Jaws". what was it like to work with the Rock Band "Great White"? (I love their music BTW) Todd: Working with Mark Kendall and the rest of the band was one of the most awesome experiences ever. The guys in Great White are just so much fun and they love what they do and they're really open to additional suggestions. They had an idea of what they wanted to do for their music video for the song Big Time from their new album Full Circle and they had the idea and then cut me loose to come up with the rest of it. Being able to work with one of my top 5 favorite rock bands of all time was nothing short of amazing. But on top of that, I also got to meet a lot of other Great White fans that were just awesome and I'm still friends with today. We had a lot of fun; it was a whirlwind trip because it was almost kind of last minute. We had two weeks from the time that we got the job to getting to shoot which during that was having to concept the video and get the script written out. Add locked in (Continued on page 10)

called “In the Cathedral”. Among the short works, I highly recommend “In the Penal Colony”, “A Country Doctor” and “The Hunter Gracchus”. All of these surreal stories advance toward indefinite or non-arrival resolutions, similar to dreams. “The Judgment” should also be mentioned since it was the favorite of Kafka himself. Herman Hesse said that Kafka was “a devout man, a religious man, albeit one of the problematic ones who belong to the type of Kierkegaard”. Other commentators believe that he was schizophrenic. Perhaps both these opinions have some truth in them. Josef Pieper, in his brilliant book called “Divine Madness”, ascribes Kafka’s artistic gifts to a type of divine “mania”—that is, a temporary or partial state of mystic madness. But for me it is not the theology or the pathology of Kafka that matters most. What I enjoy is the sheer prowess of his prose, his eccentric imagination and his humor. The latter trait has been generally overlooked and is conspicuously absent from his literary progeny—Camus, Sartre and Orwell, to name a few examples. Valid comparisons between “The Trial” and “1984” might be proposed, but the actual reading experience of these two books is totally dissimilar. Orwell’s novel is certainly thought-provoking, but only a masochist or a sadist could find it enjoyable. “The Trial”, on the other hand, is enjoyable, above and beyond its political relevance or its philosophical meaning.

Letter Sent to the Editor of Reno News and Review

ver one week ago, an article by Jeri Chadwell, came out in the Reno News & Review. She is an excellent journalist, however some of the details of her article were slightly skewed towards Renown Hospital, instead of what James Forsythe, M.D./H.M.D. was explaining to her in the two interviews she had with him where I was present. It is my opinion that all Doctor Forsythe wanted to point out was that in his opinion, after attending a Board of Director’s Meeting, the main concern of the Board was the “bottom line” financially of the hospital, instead of “saving the lives of patients diagnosed with cancer”, especially the children. He has an ongoing study that proves almost 30 or more times more effective than the studies done in the United States and in Australia, which were closed studies based on 5 years of results selected by those doing the studies. His intentions were to save lives and had nothing to do with his making additional monies by sharing his effective protocol. As a matter of fact, the hospital even did not acknowledge the fact he was even at the meeting, which he verified through various emails and telephone conversations overheard by other Doctors in the Forsythe Cancer Care Center. I personally have no “dog in this hunt”, but do feel strongly about the pureness of the Doctor’s and Clinic’s intentions to save as many stage 4 cancer patients as possible, using his protocol which has been written about and spoken highly of at several Oncology Conferences throughout our nation, where quite frankly James Forsythe, M.D./ H.M.D. is not only respected but requested to share his success with many other integrative oncologists in America, as well as around the World. His patients, who do not desire “Conventional

Chemotherapy”, come to Forsythe Cancer Care Center from all parts of our country as well as the world. Even though I feel that the writer of the article did a large amount of research before having it printed, there were misleading facts given to her, as well as a timing correction on a letter that the Doctor sent to the hospital. You see, at the time of the letter in question which ended the article, Doctor Forsythe was not even practicing Homeopathy at the date of delivery to the hospital. It is the opinion of so many patients who have recovered from his protocol being used at his clinic in Reno, and soon Las Vegas, that if more people “knew the truth” about how he is helping, not only would he never receive a negative review, but chances are that communities would be given “accolades “, or at least the credit he is due for improving the survivorship percentages of those unfortunately diagnosed with cancer. I invite every reader of my letter to stop by the Reno Town Mall (at America Matters, in which I do have an interest) and pick up one of Doctor Forsythe’s books on this subject and I will personally see to it that you may read it and return it once you too are satisfied. You see, Doctor Forsythe actually added many years to my father-in-law’s life with his treatments. any neighborhoods in Reno are being subjected to an animal invasion of sorts with increasing attempts by formerly ‘wild’ critters attempting to reclaim their original territory. This frequency of such reports is noticeable. In the Hidden Valley area of Reno’s Truckee Meadows wild horses and an occasional deer feast on lush lawns and expensive shrubbery while damaging sprinkler heads and leaving unwelcomed ‘calling cards’! Well-meaning residents, some of them at least…accept these destructive annoyances considering them ‘collateral damage’ as it were. Many are not so accommodating. Others occasionally feed these animals during the lean winter months but the experts in these matters say this is never a good idea. Years ago our neighborhood was routinely visited by a large owl causing nearly all the other birds, large and small, to become outraged at this invader. Their chatter created such a disturbance that the owl finally gave up and moved on but not before reducing quite a few of those dive-bombing nestprotecting residents. We used to see numbers of beautiful quale families scurrying about but none in recent years, not so many. They are such easypickings for hawks and owls that few of those little ones survive to maturity. Very large hawks are thriving in all parts of our unban community and evidences of their successful hunting skills are frequently seen… mostly just feathers! My wife has expressed concern this year in not seeing as many blue birds in our back yard. Since we do have two large hawks servicing our area they are harvesting them at a record pace. They too will also move on as the numbers of birds diminish. A true

Wild (Urban) Things nature expression: “Where there are things to eat… there will always be something there to eat them!” It wasn’t a pretty sight several years ago when our neighbors put their pet rabbit out in their fenced back yard to munch on dew laden grass. Later when they went to collect their bunny it was nowhere to be seen. What WAS seen were two well fed bobcats grooming themselves after such a fine meal! These two cats were seen later by other neighbors in the area until they too moved on. On her way to work not long ago, my wife was stunned when she saw a coyote proudly strutting down the middle of Meadow Springs Drive with a doomed cat in his mouth! Virginia Lake is a swell gathering place for water fowl who now prefer to live there year-round rather than migrate to warmer climates. They get fed aplenty and cause quite a stir when wellwishers arrive with bread, grain and such. Two great swans have taken up residence on the north end of the lake and all the other birds give these beautiful animals a wide birth. No reason to migrate anywhere! And why shouldn’t these wild creatures try to reclaim their territory…they were here first! After coming to Reno from Charleston, S.C. in 1973 to accept the position of CEO of the Nevada State Medical Association and serving as Director of Physician Relations at Washoe Medical Center for two years, Pugh retired in 1990. Later he helped establish Health Access Washoe County (HAWC) and served as Board Member and President for several years. He has served as Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and authored four books through the History of Medicine Program there.

getting storyboards done getting locations locked and then getting out to California with all of our equipment and then we literally started shooting practically the day we got there. It was just such a blast in the album is an awesome collection of music because it's all brand new no rehash of old music with the old school Great White sound and that's what's so cool about it. Brian: I always like to know what creative types do in between their projects. How do they keep the spark going? What's your secret? Todd: I just keep filming because I'm self-employed and I shoot video for a living. I'm always working; I'm always doing something. If I'm not doing video, I'm doing my photography work so being able to go back and forth between those is just awesome. I have a huge passion for what I do and just have a blast doing it. I've never been happier in my life. And what's really awesome is having a wife that supports you as much as my lovely wife, Angie, supports me. Being one of the old guys is rough sometimes but because I stay on top of what's in the mainstream for the way things are shot and staying on top of the latest technology, I feel that I'm able to keep up with the young guys. Brian: Do you have any favorite films/videos you've done, a short list or "Best of" Todd E Braley? Todd: I really like our film Misfit. I also am a big fan of our short film we did called The Confession; our film Kill Show is also great because of the fact that I wrote that with my youngest daughter so that makes it fun. I don't know, I'm happy with all of the projects that I've done. I do so many that it's really hard to nail down just one because they're all my babies and I love them all for one reason or another.

Brian: Finally, I see you have a lot of projects you're working on. What should our readers be looking out for and where can they find the amazing body of work you have already produced? Todd: We have a lot of stuff on amazon.com; we also have stuff on StacksTV. XYZ, and then you can go to reelhouse.org/ infinitymediaprods to see most of the work that we have done or you can also visit my YouTube channel by typing in Infinity Media Productions or Todd E. Braley. Last thought for aspiring artists and your fans as well. I just feel that if you have a passion for filmmaking that you should follow it; don't half-ass your work. Do yourself a favor; there's so much great equipment out there that is not expensive that you can get to make your sound quality better, to make your camera moves better, to make your camera angles better. You don't have to spend thousands and thousands of dollars to be able to create your projects in your films. I have a friend in Africa that does some amazing work and they don't have anything more than a camera on a tripod and a Tascam and they're doing some amazing work. So just grab your camera and go out and start shooting your projects. Cuz there's no reason to not make a movie. Brian: Thanks so much Todd!! Todd E Braley's "Misfit" was selected in the NSAEN Online Film Festival for 2017.

Discover the real Nevada Acquire information on the evolution of the Great Basin Travel from pioneer pathways to paved freeways Take to the skies above America’s largest desert

More than a hundred photos will provide a vision into a wilderness far away from the bright lights and gaming that is most associated with today’s Nevada.

We’ve been collecting books for months at LeRue Press in Reno. The book drive continues. Can you spare a book or two for kids that don’t have any books at home? The books we collect go to the self-funded Washoe County School District Volunteer Program and kids that have no books in their homes. This is an effort to start them on the journey to building a literacy library. Can you help? Bring your books to LeRue Press, 280 Greg Street, Reno or the Reno Town Mall. Just drop them in the barrel. We’ll see that they get a good home. Or call us at 775.356.1004 or WCSD Volunteer Program at 775.348.0346.

Explanation for #4.: A 'Farrier' should not be confused with a 'Blacksmith'. A farrier works with horses but needs training in blacksmithing in order to make the shoe properly. A blacksmith is a smith who works with iron and may never have any contact with horses.
