was totally honored to be selected by Executive Director, Hugh Roy Marshall, Director Jim Webster, Videographer Cesar Perez, and Host, John O’Brien to be part of show #296, “The Three Amigos”. They are on their way to show #300 and nobody deserves more credit than these gentlemen. I was a guest along with Dave Asher of the Nevada Marketplace and Senator Omer Rains, originally a Senator in California. As a matter of fact, he had 1.5 million constituents and was the youngest Senate Majority Leader in the State. The main goal of the show was to let people know that the World Famous Marshall Mint and Museum has moved to the historic Reno Town Mall, on the corner of South Virginia and Peckham. The mint and museum are so needed to keep Nevada’s history alive and this show is doing just that. If you have not taken the time to visit the new Marshall Mint and Museum, you must. The jewelry in the store and other items available are equaled by no other. As a matter of fact, I like to say that when the lights come on, “sparkles cascade in every direction”. You will also be amazed at all of the other items in the store, and I have no doubt that soon it will be known about around the world. The store is almost entirely operated by the

The Three Amigos Marshall Family, starting with Cynthia, Hugh Roy’s wife, her mother and daughter. They are all so helpful, it makes your shopping experience like none other. I personally carry around my angel of the day, Samael, being born on a Tuesday. They are pure silver, so get yours today. They have so many other things to offer like silver and gold bars, as well as the “Our Lord and Savior” series. I am also very proud of the fact this is where you can get the three series set of Nevada’s Wild Mustangs and other precious ingots as well. If they don’t have what you want, believe me, they can secure it from somewhere to complete your total shopping experience. Marshall Mint and Museum is located at the front entrance of the Reno Town Mall, and Rob Rothe and family say there is a lot more to come. For example, America Matters Media, a division of World Matters Inc., a Nevada Corporation, is also located in the Mall next to the Hub Coffee Shop. Come see for yourself at 4001 South Virginia #7, Reno, Nevada 89502. No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy

‘I

think if you were Satan and you were settin around tryin to think up somethin that would just bring the human race to its knees what you would probably come up with is narcotics.’ That is a quote from the novel, “No Country for Old Men”. It was published in 2005 and was followed by a movie adaptation just two years later. In some ways the book is better than the film, but the opposite is also true. In the end, in terms of quality, both book and film are just about equally good. In some ways they are great. Moreover, they seem to me to be charged with an almost prophetic power. The main “old man” of the story is a Texas sheriff named Ed Tom Bell. He is investigating a drug-deal-gone-wrong in which a large number of criminals were murdered by each other amid an isolated desert rendezvous-point. Though no novice when it comes to dealing with violent crime, he perceives in this massacre an element of evil that is new to his experience. That element is personified in the sinister figure of Anton Chigurh.

Book Review

Chigurh is a hired killer in pursuit of the money that was filched from the meeting place in the desert. His target is a Viet Nam war veteran named Llewelyn Moss. Though Moss is a very able man and no fool, it soon becomes obvious that he has placed himself—and his loved ones—in extreme jeopardy by consenting to touch the drug-money that he chanced upon while hunting. Though all of these characters are good, Chigurh is the one that lurks in my mind. He is not a mere villain; his stature is more mythological or biblical, like some dark force that a wrathful deity has unleashed from hell. Everyone whom he encounters ends up dead or at least deeply troubled. No character that I know of, in either fiction or film, has attained this degree of ice-cold malevolence. However, while the author is to be commended for the depth and power of such a creation, he seems too enamored of his mysterious, murderous prodigies like Chigurh (others of this ilk show up in “Blood Meridian”, another McCarthy book). A perverse relish seems to accompany the manner in which McCarthy subjects regular folks to the ways of lawless creeps and portentous sociopaths. Also, the descriptions of violent acts are almost always morbidly graphic. Despite these very real shortcomings, Cormac McCarthy is without doubt a formidable talent. “No Country for Old Men”, in particular, is a gripping work for readers who enjoy a dark, unsettling ride. John Loranger was born in Butte, Montana in 1961 but has spent most of his life in Nevada. He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before retiring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fiction and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt". His approach to fiction is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure. A good book gives the reader pleasure, the sort of deep, abiding pleasure he likes to come back to."

The Founder’s Story My name is Jack Blossby, and I’m the founder of the Underdogs Collective. When I was 17 years old and still in high school, I developed the eating disorder called anorexia, lost an unhealthy amount of weight and spiraled down one of the darkest periods of my life. Hair loss, freezing, no energy, and being trapped in my own destruction was about to be my day-today life for over a year. When I realized I had anorexia, I

The problem was, I didn’t know where to turn and when I tried googling it…well, I mainly found women that talked about it. With that being said, props to all the women for being so open about it! However, for just a 17-year-old kid at the time, it didn’t really help. In fact, I remember feeling more weird and more lonely since my perception of eating disorders at the time was that mainly women dealt with it – which couldn’t be further from the truth. Brian T. Perspectives from many sides

It has been a volatile period in history with dramatic splits between people and parties. Rather than maintaining silence, What’s the Story™ would like to contribute some down to earth, people-focused OPINIONS. These do not reflect our view necessarily; they reflect the views of people who identify as one of the parties listed. If you belong to one of these parties, your view might be different than what is expressed. That is to be expected. Our goal is to provide perspectives and contribute to the conversation, not by yelling, anger or disruption but by sharing as many views as we can allowing EVERYONE to express their First Amendment right to Freedom Of Speech. “Of the people, by the people, for the people”.

The Real Reason Behind the Fight for the Border Wall

To Wall or Not to Wall: That Is the Question

To Wall or Not to Wall

resident Trump has shut down the government. Workers are either working without pay, or refusing to work because they can no longer pay their bills. Trump began by saying he would take credit for the shutdown, then promptly blamed Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi. He has shown no willingness to budge and the offer to extend DACA protections for three years is an empty offer because lower courts have struck down his executive order as unconstitutional. Questions have been asked about the specific amount the President has asked for. He has already secured over 1.75 billion in funding for the wall, but has made it a priority to secure over five billion more. Why? He can begin the project using allocated funds and request more money afterward. Ultimately no one has any idea why he is holding federal workers hostage, not even his inner circle. Trump’s hatred of “brown people” is long standing and legendary. He has made no bones (Continued on page 10)

e truly live in desperate times don’t we? To think that in our day 2019 we are confused about so many things. The destruction of a past, and a history that has served humanity since the days of Adam and Eve. Where in all nature and all creation are there not laws and boundaries? In nature a tree will flourish growing with its own kind, yet will not flourish too close to a tree of a different family. If individuals, families, cities and governments attempt to live without laws and boundaries, you have chaos. It appears that narcissism has gone global. A narcissist destroys every boundary that prevents him from obtaining his narcissist supply. But you better not cross his boundary, or it hell to pay. The globalist are mixing up

or years, past presidents, Democrats and Republicans, have promised the American people border security. We do have some form of border security, but it could be much better with a wall. Walls work…it’s just that simple. There is the Great Wall of China (13,000 miles), the Korean Demilitarized Zone (154 miles) and the Turkmen-Uzbekistan Barrier (1,056 miles). Border walls currently under construction besides the United States are, Chinese-Korean (880 miles), Ukraine-Russia (1,243 miles) and India -Bangladesh (2,031 miles). So, what’s the story with the United States? Why have the Democrats suddenly decided that border security is not needed? Do the math…its simple! To counter President Trump and the Republicans, Democrats are looking towards 3 new blocks of voters: felons, children as young as 16 and yes…illegals. Felons – those that have violated societal laws and was caught and convicted and incarcerated and have lost their voting rights as such.

We can argue whether he has been racist, or is a white supremacist, but in the end, his remarks tell a story of intense racial hatred and discrimination. His cabinet is almost entirely white. Trump wants to make a big splash with his wall. If he gets the funding for over two-hundred miles of border fence, the win will be magnified until his stature matches that of the second-coming in the eyes of his supporters. Trump desires something concrete that bears his name. In his self-centered brain, the border wall should have the Trump logo emblazoned on it to let everyone know who built it and why.

Every Time an Elder Dies a Library Is Lost

ll our lives we’ve been told, “You can’t take it with you.” But think about it and you’ll realize just what a lot you will take with you. You’ll take everything you’ve learned, everything you’ve experienced, everything you’ve figured out or discovered over the course of your life. You’ll take with you all your skills and talents, your personal history and your family’s history. You’ll take with you all your knowledge of your era. You’ll take with you your personality, your character, your sense of humor, your values, your wisdom, your uniqueness. More and more, retirees are thinking about their legacy. They are thinking that perhaps their descendants will want to know about them as human beings—human beings to whom they’re related. Psychologists tell us that a large part of our sense of self, our identity, comes from knowing about our heritage. Our ancestors are part of us. We have their DNA. A lot of who we are is because of them. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could connect with them through their stories, letters, essays, etc., and learn what we have in common with them? Their accomplishments? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if someday, when your grandchildren’s grandchildren come looking, they’d be able to get to know you through your stories? Your ancestors may have taken their “library” with them,

(African proverb) but you don’t have to. Start to create your legacy now. It may be the most important thing you’ll ever write, even more so than your will, which is only about money and material things. I’m sure you’ve heard this one: Most of the important things in life are not things. It’s possible that the most important thing you can leave behind is your “library”—the story of YOU. There are various ways to do that: the written word, video recordings, audio recordings. If you choose to do audio or video recordings, be sure to get them transcribed. Technology changes at the speed of light. Imagine that you have made a DVD of your life’s stories and put it in a time capsule to be opened 50 or 100 years from now. Whoever finds and opens it will know what a treasure it is, but imagine their frustration when they cannot find an instrument on which to play it. That treasure is locked and there are no longer any keys with which to open it. So please get the stories of your life in written form, make several copies and, to prevent loss from natural and unnatural disasters, put them in several different places. Carol Purroy has facilitated memoir-writing classes for almost 30 years, and have inspired, encouraged, and assisted hundreds of people in getting their stories written. To that end, I wrote a “How-to” and “Why-to” book called Your Legacy: The stories of your life. It’s easy to follow, and will take you from start to finish. It’s available in paperback at Grassroots Books, Sundance Books, and the Nevada Marketplace in Reno, and in paperback and ebook online (Amazon) at: www.tinyurl.com/urlegacy

drove past the former headquarters of the Nevada State Medical Association at 3660 Baker Lane in Reno not long ago and saw it was boarded up and it looked so lonesome, all deserted and in poor repair. My first look at this building was in 1973 when I was being interviewed for the position of Executive Director of the organization. I had received a call from the president of the association, Dr. Cy Elliot, a month earlier telling me that I had been selected for an interview from among the many candidates for the position. At the time I was Assistant Executive Director of the South Carolina Medical Association and I had applied along with 25 or so other candidates for consideration and interview. Before the interview I had done some checking on the background of the Association and learned it was embroiled in a “North-South” struggle with Las Vegas physicians regarding staff management of the organization. Lt. Colonel Nelson Neff was the long- time executive Director but was retiring and the Las Vegas group chose this time to look for new staff leadership.

The original structure (pictured above) was built in the late sixties and later a second story was added. One of the pioneers in the gaming industry in Reno was a man named Lincoln Fitzgerald originally

from the Detroit area and supposedly involved with the then-famous Purple Gang which was similar to the Al Capone gang out of Chicago. Evidently, Fitzgerald got in some bit of trouble with members of the Gang and had to leave the Detroit area in somewhat of a hurry. No one knows all the details, but the story goes that perhaps he borrowed some of the Gang’s funds to set himself up owning and operating a casino called the Cal Neva Club in downtown Reno. Well, the Purple Gang caught up with him and at a later date there was this shooting on the streets of town-- actually it was an assassination attempt-whereby Fitzgerald collected numerous-life threatening wounds which were skillfully repaired by Dr. Kenneth McClean, a well-respected Reno surgeon who miraculously saved his life. During his recovery and after much negotiation, Fitzgerald was persuaded to show gratitude by thanking the doctor who saved his life by selling a third of an acre of land on Baker Lane in southwest Reno as the site for a permanent home for the Nevada State Medical Association. As the story goes, Fitzgerald constructed a guarded living quarters atop the Cal Neva Club and was seldom seen leaving the building. He died in 1981. Over the years the building was home to the Nevada State Medical Association, The Washoe County Medical Society, with Darleen Galleron long time CEO, the Nevada Professional Standards Review Organization, (Continued on page 13)

the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners, the Nevada Nurses Association, the Nevada Multiple Sclerosis Society, and a military insurance organization called CHAMPUS. It enjoyed full occupancy all those years. During that time, the building was broken into many times and on one occasion the solid brass caduceus artfully hung on the southwest fascia of the building was stolen and its replacement was also stolen; only its outline remains. The cornerstone placed there in the late 60s is also gone. I retired from the organization in late 1988 and enjoyed my nearly 15 years as CEO and lobbyist for the organization housed in this excellent building (pictured below) along with a skilled administrative staff headed

up by Dottie Bachelor and Kathleen Boyce. I wonder what happened to that 100 pound brass caduceus….melted down? You bet! After coming to Reno from Charleston, S.C. in 1973 to accept the position of CEO of the Nevada State Medical Association and serving as Director of Physician Relations at Washoe Medical Center for two years, Pugh retired in 1990. Later he helped establish Health Access Washoe County (HAWC) and served as Board Member and President for several years. Trump has no regard for any of the thousands of furloughed federal workers struggling to pay their bills. He lied when he told the press federal workers wanted him to shut down the government for the wall. The only federal employees who support the wall (besides Trump and his inner circle) are the sycophants he placed in charge of the DHS and ICE. In an effort to demonize Mexicans and others south of the border, he has stated that many of the people crossing the border illegally are rapists, murderers and drug dealers. He claims the wall will prevent these “bad hombres” from crossing. In fact, it won’t even stem the tide. Criminals will simply use the myriad of tunnels dug beneath the border to come in and out of the United States with impunity. Americans must resist the rhetoric and pressure their representatives in Congress to find a real solution to the immigration problems facing America. They must hold this administration accountable for constitutional violations and for the deaths of asylum seekers and children. One thing remains clear. There will be no end to this problem until we address illegal immigration and its cause and refuse to give in to weaker impulses to indulge petty racist biases. That is as unAmerican as building a wall.

all European nations in order to destroy patriotism, nationalism, religion and traditional values in order to create chaos to bring about order. It does appear that the century long weakening of our moral boundaries has finally come to its conclusion. The destruction of traditional marriage , the milk toasting of Christian religion. Where is our resolve? Where is our power to reclaim that which was lost? Should we be surprised that our national boundaries from without are crumbling when our inner boundaries have been failing for years. An enemy has done this and it is the enemy from within.

and radio. Who would children most likely vote for? Illegals - Democrats are supporting more states in issuing drivers’ licenses to illegals. Currently, 12 states and DC will issue driving privileges to undocumented aliens. Why? Because it takes some form of identification to register to vote and if illegals have no concern in breaking a federal law in coming or staying an extended time illegally, then voting illegally is not a stretch for them and is worth the risk. Democrats have declared their support for illegals quite openly and they are informed about California being a sanctuary state that wants to offer free healthcare to everyone. Remember, no other country in the world issues drivers’ licenses to illegals! Who would illegals vote for? The Republican Party had better wake up to the facts: the unethical Democratic Party in their quest for power will not play fair and their greed and corruption left unchecked on the country, will spread like a cancer. The Democratic Party’s thirst for power far outweighs the needs of a country divided. If Republicans refuse to give credence to their coordinated efforts, then I’m afraid that the Republican Party will for the foreseeable future, become the minority party. Additionally, Democrats do not want to be associated with President Trump on a win for the American people. For these reasons and more, I support President Trump’s strong stance on having a border wall and national security. Guest Political Contributor, R.G. Cruise

Our Connection

“Walk the Turtle”

nside the thick fog of confusion, a blurry vision of haunting images seems to spin around within memories of yesterday’s thoughts and moments.

Echoes of voices, laughter, and cries replay deep in the grieving soul as waves hit the shore and ocean mist fills the air; we are but a grain of sand. Seasons are changing as dusk begins to cover each day, a spinning world of contentment and despair circles upon our emotional walk through life. Photo by Jakub Kriz on Unsplash

Happiness lost among troubled times as blessings pour out among the stars; we hold the key to overcome our fears and loss as love prevails in time. Sentimental streets and back roads of dirt are met by the crossroads of peace as we wander into tomorrow’s challenges uncertain if our end is near. Walk the turtle without bitterness or resentment inside our hearts as we surrender to the orchestration of a divine presence felt by our connection. I feel you each day, your spirit lives inside my soul. I am one day closer to holding you in heaven. I love and miss you, Brittany. (Continued from page 8)
