THE HOME OF festivities

It has been the most beautiful year yet and we have celebrated in more ways than one; specially curated events, exhibitions, culture, music and dance. It has been one of the best that we can write off as we gave everyone a reason to celebrate and make memories with their loved ones.

As we culminate 2022; we are so enthralled that this year we get to celebrate twice as much. Santa brought the World Cup along making it one special Christmas season; a combination of the festive holiday and the frenzy of the biggest games in the world.

The State of Qatar time zone that is at par with the East African time zone has allowed us to screen the games live on our ultra-HD screens at the food court, courtyard and food market. There was ample space for public viewing with the hotels and our recreation facilities providing room for VIP and group screenings. A great experience as nations come out in large numbers to celebrate their own and forge long-lasting friendships

As you celebrate and shop, be sure to claim your triple points this Christmas season through the Village Market Bonus Card Loyalty Programme Promotion – Shop & Earn triple points.

There will be so many special offers, promotions and deals so be sure to pick your copy of the catalogue from the Bonus Card desk for exclusive shopping deals.

We eagerly await to see who the last country standing will be at the blow of the final whistle

At the release of this magazine, the Word Cup Competitions will have come to a conclusive end with the winners taking home their victory.

We are so excited to celebrate this most wonderful time of the year with you. Get to relax, unwind and celebrate Christmas with us.

FESTIVUS GAMES DEBUTS IN KENYA

HOME OF football

We are excited to celebrate the World Cup 2022 experience that will be hosted by the State of Qatar this year. Village Market has been the ultimate viewing centre for all the 64 matches giving us a rare opportunity to celebrate through the festive season into the New Year’s season. A thrilling football experience for all football lovers, shoppers, and the public at large to experience sports and culture at an elevated level.

This one-of-a-kind experience entailed game screenings on our large ultra-HD screens at the two main food-courts with amplified sound to give a real football stadium feel, an immersion that captured all the unscripted drama, motion and emotions.

The World Cup 2022 edition that took place from the 20th November to 18th December 2022 has seen many left speechless and has been dubbed the World Cup of the underdogs!

The past four weeks have been full of great cheer and angst in equal measure with the underdogs swiftly shocking the usual bigwigs. The competitions have had many “small

inexperienced and incapable countries” in previous World Cup competitions fighting for their place in the games; Hansi Flick with Germany and Luis Enrique with Spain arguably the best managers at this World Cup have already been knocked out. The most exciting bit for us was the presence of Morocco and Senegal in the round of 16. Morocco being the only African team in the history of the tournament qualified to the semi-finals of this World Cup, and gave a spirited fight against Argentina and Messi in the Quarter finals. Morocco’s ‘Atlas Lions’ carried the dreams and ambitions of the entire continent on their shoulders and we are very proud of this fact!

The State of Qatar time zone that is at par with the East African time zone has allowed us to screen the games live on our ultra-HD screens at the foodcourt, courtyard and food market. There was ample space for public viewing with the hotels and our recreation facilities providing room for VIP and group screenings. A great experience as nations come out in large numbers to celebrate their own and forge long lasting friendships.

The opening of Swag stop couldn't have come at a better time as patrons had the opportunity to purchase their supporting national team jerseys. At the release of this magazine, the World Cup Competitions will have come to a conclusive end with the winners taking home their victory!

The GIFT of travel - make some magical memories this festive season!

What's better than enjoying the holidays with your family or friends and bond over some exciting experiences? Why not enjoy the festive season at Kenya's stunning coast or in a hidden gem in the wild bush?

Swahili Beach Resort in Diani was built to impress. From the art to the architecture, this beautiful fusion of African, Indian, Arabian and Zanzibari influences is nothing but a "wow" destination. The amazing one-of-a-kind, seven-layer cascading pool, fed by spring water and natural salts runs for 200 metres from the resort to the fine white sandy beach. The 140 rooms are built around the pool with a great view over the Indian Ocean. Several lounges, bars & restaurants offer mouth-watering delicacies – and if that not yet enough, there is also a fitness centre and a spa with its own cove and indoor pool, jacuzzi and award-winning treatments. For the more adventurous ones, Diani Beach has all kinds of water sports on offer. Relax and rejuvenate your mind, body and soul! It usually gets quite packed on Kenya's coast: hotel rooms, flights and other transport options become scarce and expensive. So why not go for a different experience in the bush?

Beautiful sunrises, amazing views, one of the best locations for game viewing, delicious meals, amazing staff, private atmosphere – this is Mara Siria Camp. Located in the Mara Triangle on top of the Siria Escarpment, this camp is the right fit for those travellers who want to enjoy a true wildlife experience in the spirit of "Out of Africa". The camp is silver certified by Ecotourism Kenya – a good start to reducing your ecological footprint in 2023 and still enjoy very comfortable accommodation in tents and cottages. The camp is not fenced, you can see animals wander around just on the premises, hear them grazing at night or watch them quench their thirst at the waterhole. The small plunge pool and several viewing platforms offer fantastic views into the Mara plains and over the Mara River. The Mara Triangle is one of the best places to encounter the Big Five and other wildlife in Kenya. Apart from game drives the camp also offers guided nature walks and cycling trips, balloon rides and horse riding. The camps tops all this with a private atmosphere, the staff goes out of their way to make each guest's stay a once-in-a-lifetime experience – what an exciting place to be!

After a busy year, it can also be very relaxing to spend your holidays at home, enjoy the

calm atmosphere in the capital over the festive season and take the chance to visit the places you usually find hectic. Take your loved ones out for some sumptuous meals to one of the many excellent restaurants in the city and just gift your loved ones some "wanderlust". In the spirit of "Collect moments. Not things." a travel voucher represents an exciting promise to your loved ones!

Whether you plan a family trip, a romantic couples experience or you would like to inspire a friend to an adventure trip or just wake the wanderlust desire – a travel voucher is one of the greatest gifts in this festive season and a sneak preview into a new experience.

Join in for a magical experience and discover, connect and feed your soul this festive season!

SPRING noshery

Spring is all about bloom, bold vibrant colours, rich earthiness, and seasonal fresh food. Our contemporary hearty meals are reminiscent of the spring season which is characterized by warm colours and leafy foliage much like our garden-fresh, rich-flavoured meals.

Our name, The Spring Noshery, inspires our unique décor, that’s represented by our pastel-coloured booths, the blues, the yellows, the greens in the plants giving the place an aesthetic earthy appearance. Noshery being a unique synonym for a restaurant distinctively sets us apart from other cafés and restaurants across the board.

At The Spring Noshery, you get to enjoy continental fusion meals without ever leaving the restaurant, our all-time favourite meals being The Spring Breakfast, The Spring Loaded Fries, and Belgian Waffles.

The Spring Noshery’s extensive menu is curated using inspirations drawn from all over the world. Personalising our meals to match the Spring aura ensures we provide our guests with unique offerings that are fresh, and of quality, while still maintaining a rich and healthy culinary experience.

We practice a farm-to-table diet that ensures our customers get consistently fresh meals, from our freshly baked artisanal pastries to our richly brewed crisp coffee, to our garden fresh savoury meals and organic vegetable salads.

The Spring Noshery’s journey began when the owners noticed a niche in the market for healthy hearty meals, a good ambiance and great vibes.

Our casual dining restaurant redefines the space in an aesthetic relaxing environment, offering an authentic à la carte modern dining experience.

Our mission is to be one of the best restaurants in Kenya and East Africa while still maintaining our identity. As much as we learn and grow, our objective is to never lose our individuality nor stray from our core values which are great customer service, healthy hearty food, great ambiance, and being respectful and supportive of our community.

DARLING IS a ten-year-old from a shanty town bitterly named as Paradise. Her childhood revolves around her gang of friends with amusing names ; Stina, Chipo, Bastard and Godknows, seemingly innocent beings in a harsh environment of Zimbabwe.

Around 2007/2008 the country falls apart, citizens are murdered and the white Zimbabweans are not spared either. Darling’s lavish lifestyle comes to a halt when their prestigious home is bulldozed, and they leave to the village. The Chinese are haste to ceremoniously reap the benefits of a nation in despair and dire poverty. The leadership has been accused of rigging polls and orchestrating violence.

Darling and her crew are regularly hitting Budapest which is a nearby town of the well off. Like any child, they are eager to know the other side of life but primarily to fill their ever grumbling stomachs. We didn't eat this morning, and my stomach feels like somebody took a shovel and dug everything out. A simile you can feel. They enjoy climbing walls, peeking into gardens and their dream houses and heave themselves

into trees to steal guavas. The fruit tranquillizes their hunger temporarily, but they get to pay for it later. Their childhood is full of mischief that is breathtaking, at some point, they want to help Chipo get rid of her big stomach with a wire. In another instance, they find out Darling’s absentee father has shown up, they forcefully get in their shack and intuit he is dying of AIDS yet poor Darling had not yet grasped that. 'He feels like dry wood in my hands, but there is a strange light in his sunken eyes like he has swallowed the sun.' Their worship, play, illiteracy, home leaves one feeling explosive and dreading their next move.

Darling's dream of going abroad comes true, and she is uprooted from her witty friends and wretched country. Like so many immigrants, she is disillusioned with her exodus in search of a better life and education. Life is not as easy as she thought it would be in the United States. The jobs aren’t much for the immigrants who

WHEN BREATH BECOMES AIR

When Breath Becomes Air is a gasping and profound memoir that can easily turn one into a sad sobbing mess.

At the age of 36, Paul Kalanithi, who is nearing completion of his training as a neurosurgeon, realises that he is skating on thin ice after being diagnosed with an aggressive stage IV lung cancer.

The reversal of fortune from a healthy physician to a patient makes Paul reassess on how he would spend the rest of his time, alive.

Paul Kalanithi had previously pursued English Literature and acquired a Master’s of the same. He considered books his closest confidants from a tender age. But he dithered

between being a writer and a doctor.

He later applies for medical school as he desired to impact in the real world directly. Although he still holds onto his dream of becoming a writer later in his life. The later time turns out to be when he is in the hospital bed.

“We all have a notion of what it means to be good, and we can’t live up to it all the time.”

The book has four parts. In the first part, Paul Kalanithi describes his diagnoses. The second part talks about his change of careers

found their way illegally. ‘You think watching on BBC means you know what is going on? No, you don't my friend, it's the wound that knows the texture of the pain; it's us who stayed here feeling the real suffering, it's us who stayed here who have the right to say anything.’ Darling has to do odd jobs of sorting out waste plastics and bear the pain of not visiting her home country because she is an illegal immigrant. She is bereft in her dream country where minds are more isolated, unlike her motherland.

The book vividly displays the impact of colonialism and imperialism in the eyes of a minor and the disillusion of an immigrant. Her work stuns as it captivates and she flays the skin with issues such as AIDS, teenage pregnancy, rape, and politics. I doubt my capability to do justice describing it, so I won’t. I definitely recommend this vibrant read from high school onwards. It is the closest you might come to someone’s else life.

from a writer to a doctor. The third part he describes what it feels like being in the shoes of a patient as a doctor, being a father and his deteriorating health.

Finally, the epilogue is written by his wife, a physician, who they went ahead to have a baby with after his diagnoses. She talks about her husband’s death, his journey of writing and their relationship.

It’s hard to fathom how fast life was cut. Yet, grateful that Paul wrote such an insightful memoir in his last days. Life is worth living, regardless of how truncated it is.

BREAST CANCER awareness

Cancer is a medical condition that scares many. Those who have survived it will attest to the horror they experience at the point of diagnosis and the fear of its prognosis. One very common cancer in the world is breast cancer.

Over the years, the pink ribbon has become synonymous with breast cancer and signifies hope in the fight against breast cancer. Countless efforts have been made to encourage early detection and access to treatment. This Festive season, Garnet Pharmacy urges you to take the initiative and perform a quick and simple five step breast self-examination. This is a critical technique that should be learnt.

EASILY PERFORMED

Breast self-examination can easily be performed from the comfort of your home. It allows for early detection of changes in the breast to prompt a medical check-up for timely diagnosis of breast cancer and a better prognosis. What are some of the changes in the breast that you know or have heard about, and which could be associated with breast cancer?

Let’s keep the conversation going to raise awareness. All our communication channels are open to respond to any comments, questions and feedback regarding our service and your well-being.

ART

Village Market has over the years Collaborated with artists in response to humanitarian emergencies for instance the Heart of Art initiative in 2012 raised KES 1.5 million for drought stricken families in Northern Kenya through the Kenya Red Cross.

In 2017, Village Market collaborated once more with the art community towards the Club Art initiative to raise peace awareness among warring communities in the North Western region of Kenya through the Peace Caravan Trust.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Village Market initiated the Art in the Open pop-up market to support local artists working with various mediums such as visual arts and sculptures to showcase their work in an open air setting spread out across the mall. The bi-monthly initiative has largely been geared towards supporting artists' livelihoods in the last three years since its inception.

The Yard is an 18-hole miniature golf recreation facility offering creatively designed obstacles with a carefully curated selection of re-purposed junk hanging from the walls, and ceilings positioned on the courses. The Yard showcases the storytelling power of common objects and how re-purposing can breathe new

life into old items and impact the reduction of waste on Earth. It chronicles and highlights the mundane, insignificant objects of our existence and makes them remarkable thus reinforcing that sustainability isn’t about perfection but mankind’s creativity that brings about a greater difference.

ENVIRONMENT

Africa collects textiles ( ACT )

ACT focuses on opportunities for up-cycling and sustainable recycling that allows textiles to be reprocessed within the country. All profits go to charity. In 6 months of initiating the project, over 1 tonne of clothes and footwear was donated by enthusiastic shoppers creating the first prototype of corrugated iron sheets. The project demonstrates how the loop of textile production can be closed by local collection and reuse.

ACT’s objective in Kenya is to develop and create a project blueprint for other African countries as well. Currently only 20% of the all used clothes and shoes are being collected and reused worldwide. Kenya was the first country that rolled out the blue print with Village Market being the first shopping mall in the country to embrace the Project.

Stop wish-cycling

Due to the high water consumption in the mall there are a number of sewer lines that connect to different reservoirs from Trademark, Tribe, and Village Market outlets. Once the reservoirs are full, the wastewater is automatically redirected to the treatment plant for a 5 step treatment process which involves; removal of solid particles at the bar screen, addition of oxygen at the equalisation tank for homogeneity for ease of treatability and storage, addition of cultured bacteria in the aeration chamber to aid in breakdown of organic load, main treatment phase at the membrane bioreactor, membrane filters to remove suspended solids and a final analysis to ensure the water is safe to be released.

Plans are underway to have the water; recycled into the hotels, used for watering of gardens along Limuru road. The water will also be stored to be used in case of a fire emergency upon completion of the project.

Beautification

As part of the Limuru Road re-development and beautification in 2016/2017, Village Market undertook a multi-million project to convert the road from a single carriageway to a dual carriage, install and maintain the street lights, road markings, drainage, beautification, pavements and regular cleaning and maintenance for the users of the road, nearby residents, businesses and the public.

Karura forest tree planting

In response to the worldwide environmental call to action in collaboration with the managing trustees of Friends of Karura, Forest Village Market embarked on an exceptional tree planting initiative with 9000 indigenous seedlings. An ambitious tree-planning initiative with a financial commitment of 2.07 million shillings. Village Market has also in turn issued about 5000 free tree seedlings annually to its clientele to encourage the planting of more trees in different neighbourhoods.

Trash to treasure

Village Market collaborates with Trash To Treasure (T3), a local recycling company in recycling of PET bottles. This project seeks to sensitise Village Market shoppers and the public on responsible disposal and up-cycling of plastic.

The partnership has created a life-sized whale located at the mall entrance in which over 60,000 bottles have been collected. Through this project, all shoppers and the public at large are encouraged to play their part in converting their PET plastic into textile thus offering a sustainable solution to the global plastic epidemic.

World environment day

As the world marks the environmental day every 5th June, Village Market together with its partners seeks to educate and inform the public on various ways in which we can reduce carbon emission. This includes and is not limited to recycling shopping bags through the Jeans In and Bags Out initiative, planting trees, buying biodegradable products, responsible consumption and waste separation to facilitate ease in reusing and recycling.

To actively support this initiative, we equally donate plants to valuable shoppers as a take-home gift to join in being part of the solution to a greener eco-system.

Waste management

Village Market has contracted Green Miles Zero Waste Services Limited to manage its waste disposal via a circular economy model. Cognizant of the challenges of waste management, the partnership has been able to attain zero waste to landfill, thus contributing directly towards attaining Goal 6 on Clean water and sanitation, Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production, and Goal 14 Life on Land. As of the second half of 2022, Village Market achieved the following out of a total weight of 30.6 tonnes;

Recycled Waste Outcome

30.6 tonnes diverted from landfill Saved up space equivalent to 0.026595 hectares

16.521 tonnes worth of paper recycled Saved 280 full grown trees

30.6 tonnes of waste recycled Saved 131.8 tonnes of Carbon dioxide

16.521 tonnes worth of paper recycled Saved 437,666 litres of water

12.733 tonnes of waste recycled Saved 151,306.30 kWh Energy

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

The Green Team comprises staff from Village Market, Tribe and Trademark who are keen on environmental projects for sustainability and conservation of energy, water and waste.

Creating awareness for the larger community in conservation.

The team has however gone a notch higher to engage the community around us in various environmental friendly projects. In their desire and pursuit for a more ecofriendly community, the team engages in regular clean-ups, nurturing kitchen gardens, children’s home visitation and the annual tree planting at Karura Forest. The team will also in the near future have a corner at the City park .

NEW beginings

We always love it when we get to start a new year. All so pumped up, positive vibes high in the air and lots of well wishes flying across. There is always this great energy to do more, to do better, to grow.

A new year gives us all that plus so much more. An opportunity to reflect on what our previous year has been and have the courage once again, to dream. To do the things we have been scared to do, to mend relationships, grow our finances, get our health in check, start a family, or relocate.

So many times we look for a perfect time, a concept that quite does not exist and so we keep pushing decisions that need to be made. The fear of the unknown being so much greater than the leap of faith we ought to take.

Our capacity to believe

The uncertainty looms too close, threatening to bust our capacity to believe; to know that we have what it takes to excel in the things that make our hearts tick. Love, poetry, writing, business, strategy, fashion, speaking, painting; the list is endless of the beautiful giftings that lie innate, untapped within us.

This is the year to bring it out, to do it afraid and to keep trying until you find your niche. To fuel your desire for more; adventure, thrill, stability, love and growth.

As we navigate all of this, our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing is so important as it allows us to tap into our potential and surpass it; to be more present and enjoy life for what it has to offer.

Of the many things we desire to do, there are those that come top of Googles’ mind and help us calibrate and recentre our lives; finances, health and fitness, and relationships. We urge you to keenly look into these areas and see just how much better this year will be as you put in the work.

One of the greatest stressors we experience year in year out is that of finances due to either our inability to stick to budgets or when life throws its curve balls as it often does, in the most unexpected times. It is best to have a money plan that will help you run the remaining eleven months. Elevate your money mindset and calibrate it towards abundance. Speak to a financial expert and set your money goals for 2023.

If talking to someone is not your way of doing things, then You-Tube is your friend. There are so many financial conversations that we can access thanks to technology; listen in, pick what works for you and set the ball rolling. Get to know your money, grow your money from the onset and have it work for you.

The greatest wealth we can ever have is that of good health. Our bodies have a natural ability to let us know when things are out of balance, but before we get to that, how about we get to treat it right. Eat healthy, avoid processed foods and drink lots of water. We know the drill.

“Garbage in Garbage Out” so this year let’s be more mindful of what we eat for a more nourished

body and get to enjoy less visits to the doctors.

Fitness is one of the most important to keeping healthy in both mind and body. A wholesome exercise regime at least three times a week goes a long way in keeping our bodies in great shape.

Pick up an activity

In recent years, taking time to jog, walk or even hike has been seen to be very therapeutic. Pick up an activity that works for you and get to work at it. An opportune moment to put aside our gadgets and reconnect with nature.

There is such beauty in the human ability to connect with others; whether as a result of working together, or having known each other as friends or by virtue of being family.

It is these deep seated connections that help us flourish in the decisions we make and forge with greater courage into the places we have dreamt to be. The wisdom, laughter, care and nurture that can only be found in the place of love. There is therefore a greater need in setting aside time to reconnect with those we love. A joy that can only be filled by those in our inner circles.

It’s 2023, get to dream and do all that your heart desires. Take those mini-vacations, visit your family often, start crossing out your bucket list and write a whole new one. Try out new dishes, walk into the rooms you’ve been scared to and make that pitch.

Above everything else, choose you and what makes you happy, fulfilled, content. Dream and do all that will make your heart full. Purpose to laugh more, dream more and be present. Choose to live and live to the fullest.

We can already see that this is going to be such a beautiful year. New beginnings sometimes consist of the old nudgings we have ignored over the years. Purpose to listen to your heart, to that still voice that says this is it!
