Where Smoke Thunders –the Natural Spectacle of Victoria Falls

On the border with Zambia, Zimbabwe proudly harbours one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World –Victoria Falls. Known to the local Lozi people as “Mosi-oa-Tunya,” meaning “the smoke that thunders,” this colossal spectacle is a must-see for any adventurer seeking awe-inspiring beauty and exhilarating thrills.

Witnessing the roar

At 1,708 metres wide and plummeting 108 metres into the churning Zambezi River below, Victoria Falls is a force of nature almost unlike any other. When the river roars to life during the peak rainy season (February to May), its thunderous power sends mist soaring over 400 metres and visible from nearly 50 kilometres away. For the ultimate closeup, intrepid explorers can brave the spray at one of the park’s many observation points, soaking in the views and feeling the raw energy of the falls.

Living history

Step back in time at Victoria Falls National Park, where much remains unchanged since David Livingstone, the first European to “gaze upon that glorious sight,” arrived in 1855. A statue of the explorer and missionary stands adjacent to the Devil’s Cataract, which is found along the waterfall. The iconic Victoria Falls Bridge, a marvel of engineering completed in 1905, joins Zimbabwe and Zambia. Take a walk through the park’s lush forest, spotting birds and rare butterflies, or delve into the fascinating archaeological sites that tell of ancient civilizations.

ESSENTIAL TIPS:

Thrills & spills

For adrenaline junkies, the aptly named “Adventure Capital of Africa” lives up to its reputation. Plunge into the churning rapids on a white-water rafting expedition or test your nerves with a bungee jump off the historic bridge. Those seeking a gentler pace can embark on a tranquil sunset cruise on the Zambezi, witness the captivating cultural dances at a local village, or indulge in some retail therapy at busy craft markets.

Victoria Falls

Best time to visit: February to May for peak water flow, October to December for warm weather and fewer crowds.

Packing essentials: Raincoat, comfortable shoes, sunhat, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

Park entry fees: US$50 for international visitors, US$30 for regional visitors.

Pay a visit: Victoria Falls Town, a bustling centre for accommodation, restaurants, activities, and nightlife.

Respectful tourism: Be mindful of local customs and traditions and help preserve the natural beauty of the falls and the surrounding area.

With its incredible scenery, rich history, and endless opportunities for adventure, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is an unforgettable destination.

While the Big Five (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and rhino) reign supreme, Hwange hosts a dazzling array of

browsing, zebra galloping in striped herds, and the elusive cheetah sprinting across the savanna.

With nearly 400 bird species flitting through the skies, Hwange is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. From the iridescent glint of the Bradfield’s hornbill to the comical strut of the bronze-winged courser, every chirp and flutter adds to the song of the wilderness.

From Peak to Valley, Witness the Untamed Spirit of the Eastern Highlands

R ising like green giants along Zimbabwe’s eastern border with Mozambique, the Eastern Highlands paint an incredible picture of misty peaks, cascading waterfalls, and lush valleys. This untamed landscape, between the hills of Nyanga to the bustling Mutare town, down to the Chimanimani Mountains and the intimidating rainforests of Chipinge, speaks of tales of ancient trade routes, colonial echoes, and vibrant Manyika and Ndau cultures.

Nyanga National Park, sprawling across the north corner, invites exploration. Summit Zimbabwe’s highest peak, Mount Nyangani, on the four-day Turaco Trail, feeling the earth tremble beneath your boots. Discover ancient rock paintings at Diana’s Vow in Rusape, while the Pungwe Gorge & Falls offer dramatic scenic highlights.

However, the Eastern Highlands’ attractions extend beyond these hotspots. Follow the Honde Valley, stopping at tea plantations and quaint villages, each with a story to tell. Learn about the cultural of the Manyika and Ndau people and their traditions. Cast a fly into the cool streams of Rhodes Nyanga, Udu and Mare Dams for a lunch’s serving of the rainbow trout. Breathe in the panoramic scenery from World’s View, feeling the vastness of the land stretch before you or unwind by the shores of Lake Connemara.

Mutare, the region’s vibrant heart, hums with history. Experience the artistry of the National Gallery, unravel the stories of antiquity transportation at the Mutare Museum, and drive through the leafy suburbs to the town’s oldest house of Utopia while taking in the daily hive of activity of the locals.

Venture past the city limits into the Bvumba Mountains embrace of misty enchantment. Emerald forests are home to elusive samango monkey and birds like Swynnerton’s robin, while coffee plantations cover the slopes in bright green hues. Tee off at the incredible Leopard Rock Golf Course, where breathtaking panoramas can be enjoyed from every hole. Remember to shot left into the game park for mesmerising animal interaction.

For the intrepid, Chimanimani National Park beckons. Hiking trails wind through a wonderland of crystal-clear waterfalls and deep world renowned quartzite caves. Conquering dramatic peaks and marvelling at the cascading Bridal Veil Falls are just a taste of the wild landscapes here. Keep your eyes peeled for the rare blue swallow and the emerald flash of the malachite sunbird.

Don’t miss Chipinge, the home of Eastern Highlands cultural identity. Apart from its agro plantations, Chipinge is popular for its traditional medical and medicinal practices and the famed muchongoyo dance. It will sure awaken the desire to know more about the region’s cultural endowment. Chirinda Forest gives it an urge to boost the region as one of the most interesting birding areas in the country being host to the famed big tree of The Valley of Giants.

Buhera offers you the closure to what became of the great madzimbabwe of Mutapa’s empire. A Guide to Ancient Ruins and Stunning Landscapes

I n the south-eastern corner of Zimbabwe, where time seems to move to the rhythm of ancient drums, lies Masvingo Province.

Masvingo offers a rich and rewarding experience for any traveller seeking adventure beyond the ordinary.

Great Zimbabwe

No exploration of Masvingo is complete without a pilgrimage to Great Zimbabwe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located amid granite hills near Lake Mutirikwe. Imagine a thriving medieval city, home to some 20,000 Karanga people, descendants of the Shona.

Their architectural genius lives on in the colossal, elaborately chiselled walls and the iconic stone tower, silent sentinels of a glorious past. Great Zimbabwe is not just a ruin; it’s a gateway to a forgotten civilization, waiting to be rediscovered.

Lake Mutirikwi

The tranquil waters of Zimbabwe’s second-largest lake, Mutirikiwi’s reflect the imposing granite hills that frame its

shores. Lush miombo woodland teeming with over 25 species of wild animals provide a sanctuary for nature lovers. A recreational park on the north shore beckons with opportunities for picnicking, boating, and wildlife spotting.

Masvingo’s charm extends far beyond its headline attractions. The Kyle Dam, an imposing Italian-style structure built in 1960, stands tall in the landscape, while the Chamavara Cave, adorned with ancient San rock art, offers a glimpse into the artistic spirit of the region’s earliest inhabitants. For those seeking adventure, the Mushandike Sanctuary awaits with its pristine savannas, perfect for game viewing, boat trips and fishing expeditions.

Immersion in history and culture

History buffs can delve into the past at the Old Fort Tower in Masvingo town, a relic of the colonial era, while those seeking cultural immersion can find warmth and hospitality amid the traditions of the Karanga people. Masvingo’s cultural vibrancy adds another layer of richness to the province’s overall appeal.

Unforgettable Wildlife on the Mighty Zambezi

M ana Pools National Park is a 219,600-hectare (543,000-acre) wildlife conservation area and national park and UNESCO site. It is situated on the southern banks of the Zambezi River and is a region where the floodplain turns into a broad expanse of lakes after each rainy season.

The park is renowned for its walking and canoeing safaris and is a wildlife-rich, biodiversity wonderland that will delight at every turn. The name “Mana” means “four” in Shona and refers to the four large permanent pools formed by the meanderings of the middle Zambezi.

As the lakes gradually dry up and recede, the region attracts many large animals in search of water, making it one of Africa’s most renowned game-viewing regions.

Unbridled biodiversity

Witness iconic encounters – lions stalking the grasslands, buffalo herds thundering across plains, graceful waterbuck alongside zebra. Over 350 bird species, including the majestic fish eagle, can be found here.

Beyond the Jeep

Embrace the thrill of navigating the mighty Zambezi by canoe. Glide past hippo pods, witness exotic birds skimming the waterand soak in the untouched wilderness. Embark on guided walking safaris, tracking solitary leopard, marvelling at industrious elephant dung beetlesand breathing in the acacia scent.

More than the Big Five

Seek the elusive pangolin, the agile sable antelope, and playful baboons. Encounter and embrace rich Shona culture – visit local villages, learn about traditions, and witness energetic local dances.

Planning your escape

During the dry season (May-October) find animals congregating around waterholes or escape the heat in the lush green wet season (November-April).

Mana Pools is more than a safari; it’s a chance to disconnect, reconnect with nature, and experience the raw beauty of Zimbabwe.
