CARAKANA EXHIBITION We were honored to host Her Excellency Mama Rachel Ruto at the Carakana Exhibition launch held on 17 March. The exhibition, set to fund raise and provide support to vulnerable women in Kenya, was well attended by the diplomatic community, prominent philanthropists and friends of Carakana. When words meet music, the result is “Lala Land.” Kids and adults alike were treated to a much-coveted session of music, reading and book signing as Polycarp Otieno of Sauti Sol launched his new Book “Lala Land”. The Book shares its title with a song from his album “Father Studies”; a song about a father soothingly singing his son to sleep. He reminds him not to forget who he is as he drifts off into dreamland.

TASTE OF THAILAND PROMOTION The Taste of Thailand Promotion 2022 was held at Village Market on 5 March to showcase a wide range of products and dishes from Thailand. The promotion was launched by the Ambassador of Thailand to Kenya HE The Ambassador Ms Sasirit Tangulrat and Group Executive Chairman, Dr Manish Shah. LEATHER AND JUTE JEWELLERY, UNIQUE SHOES AND BAGS FROM MOYO

B

orn out of a Romanian-Dutch soul that fell in love with Africa, MOYO is a high-end minimalist brand with a heart for people and planet. The idea was born during a sewing course at the “Sewing Café” in Rotterdam. A move to Kenya followed. Once in Nairobi, the craftsmanship of the local artisans, the handmade overruling the factory made and the need for employment resulted in the empowerment of small-scale workshops and independent artisans from all over the city, under the name MOYO (‘heart’ in Kiswahili). MOYO is where ethics, sustainability and design meet. Ethics translated into good

working conditions and a fair pay, sustainability in the use of eco linen and upcycled cotton and wool from fashion houses in Italy – sample runs that would otherwise not be used and end up in landfills. Design in the minimalist patterns celebrating natural beauty and complementing our statement leather and jute jewellery as well as unique shoes and bags made of the best-quality local leather – a refined, soft kind that we introduced to the market and have stayed true to ever since. UNIQUE CREATIONS FROM ZANTA ADEYDE INSPIRED BY OLD TRADITIONS

S

ince the beginning of time, many Africa cultures adorn accessories inspired by nature. All these accessories related and connected to stories in their daily lives not forgetting seasoned by nature itself. In 2015, Anyango Adeyde, a self-taught designer, started creating jewellery inspired by these old traditions. She uses bones, beads, brass and stones in her unique creations evoking daily stories and the different seasons. This is how the brand Zanta Adeyde was created. Over the years the passion has grown by designing and creating pure-leather handbags

and bespoke accessories. All items are proudly hand-made in Africa by a collective of young and expert craftsmen and women based in the Kibera slum. The brand directly supports more than 20 families with meaningful livelihood opportunities. during the festival, Moto Festival in partnership with Maktabas and Village Market have an initiative dubbed adopt-a-library. Adopt a library is a campaign to have the public donate books to equip 30 libraries in marginalised communities. The campaign’s target is to collect 18,0000 books. Maktabas organization, whose mission is to bridge the literacy gap between communities from marginalised communities and and the rest of the world by making books of all kinds accessible to any child or adult with an interest in reading, has so far donated more than 100,000 books to 128 institutions. Maktabas is the lead sponsor of the adopt-a-library campaign and has donated 9,000 books towards the project.

Donation For every library adopted, Maktabas will be donating 300 books. Nana Darkoa, the keynote speaker participated in the adopt a library initiative, is equipping two libraries, one in Mathare and one in Kibera. Some 30 libraries from counties have already been identified and will benefit from the noble course. The libraries are located in schools based in rural areas such as Pokot, others in the Kibera and Mathare slums in Nairobi. There are community libraries and one of the beneficiaries will be Usonga Library in Homabay, children’s homes and prisons one of them being Lang’ata Women’s prison. The donated books will be sorted to suit the needs and the users of the specific libraries. Literacy plays a significant role in reducing gender, race, nationality and religious inequality that favours one group over another in access to education, property, employment, health care, legal and civic participation. Donating books to the libraries will make a huge impact as it is the foundation for doing well at school, socialising with others, problem-solving,

WHY AM I NOT GETTING

pregnant? M

ost women are told three things growing up: Get a degree. Get a job. Get Married. No, let’s make it four: Get children. This forms an endless race to keep up with the ticking “biological clock.” Amidst all these, the slightest delay hurts. Anything beyond, seems like a crushing failure. It often takes a huge amount of unlearning to restore the inadequacy experienced. But, even that isn’t an option handed on a platter. Subfertility is the silent truth behind many young parents today. According to a 2018 report, 10 to 14 per cent of the Kenyan population suffers from subfertility. Subfertility is the inability of a

32

couple to conceive after 12 months of regular intercourse without contraception in women less than 35 years of age, and after six months of regular intercourse without contraception in women 35 years and older. The resumption of fertility ought to be immediate after stopping the use of contraceptives, except for the contraceptive injection that can cause a delay of resumption to the fertility of up to a year.

like reduced ovarian capacity or function or indirectly like a thyroid condition. Other treatment modalities range from medication to surgery and assisted reproduction – all ideally done with couple counselling. In my opinion, the expectations of the modern-day woman to lead the pack in her career and be an excellent wife are incongruent with self or cultural expectations of being a doting mother.

Ovulation

Dr Charles Muriuki, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, M.P. Shah Hospital.

So, your delay in getting pregnant calls for fertility investigations that include hormonal tests to evaluate conditions that directly affect ovulation,

Village The path to being smarter and greener Kenyans BY GURPREET KAUR KENTH

K

enya is emerging as a leader in the fight against plastic pollution. As we resolve the waste management issue Kenya faces today, it is important to understand that plastic packaging helps protect and preserve goods, while reducing weight in transportation, which saves fuel and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Plastic packaging is one of the most important contributors to protecting food from spoiling. Food waste has a significantly higher environmental impact, particularly in the form of its carbon footprint, than packaging waste. Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products. Recycling benefits our community and the environment. We have collected over 60,000 bottles from the T3 recycling station at the Village Market. As we Kenyans become familiar with recycling below are a few recycling best practices:

Make sure it's clean, empty and dry Rinsing containers before dropping them off to the bins especially dairy and sugary drinks packaging. A general rule of thumb is that recyclable material should be clean enough to use again. If you’re putting things in the bin and you’re concerned about pests, then chances are your recyclables are not clean. Rinsing a

36

milk bottle or a soda bottle takes seconds and if everyone did it, it would save tons of recyclables going to the landfill.

Know your plastics Every plastic item has a recycling triangle labeled by resin codes #1 through #7 code inside. Generally, the higher the number, the less recyclable it is. Plastics #1 and #2 are the most common types of plastic containers and the most easily recyclable. When purchasing plastic packaged goods, focus on purchasing plastic that can easily be recycled. At T3, we recycle code 1 plastic which is PET. You can dispose of all types of plastic in the recycling station because we segregate and

give different codes to the respective recyclers we have partnerships with.

Combined materials are trash Recycling only works when like materials are together. Unfortunately, items like plastic-coated coffee cups, laminated paper and paper-bubble wrap envelopes from parcels and online deliveries can’t ever be separated, which means they’re trash. Try to avoid buying nonrecyclable materials that can’t be separated. And when you can, shop local to cut down on the carbon footprint of your products.

Stop wish-cycling When it comes to recycling, one of the worst things you can do is wish-cycle. That’s when we optimistically put non-recyclable objects in recycling bins. When we do this, we contaminate a lot of otherwise recyclable materials. If there’s too much trash mixed into the recycling load, that entire load could end up in a landfill. So when you wish-cycle, it messes up the entire system.

Teach Yourself At the end of the day, we can’t know everything. There’s a lot of stuff we accumulate over our lives — batteries, electronics, paint cans, toys, clothing, wood — and they, unfortunately, all have separate drop off centers or special instructions for recycling. Read up on recycling websites and teach yourself what you need to know.
