The endlessly fun activities included a slime-making class and drumming Jam at Under The Sea, cupcake decorating class for Kids at the Food Market, art and robotic stations, hopscotch, giant jenga, balloonists, stilt walkers, pottery among others. It was joy galore as various brands provided amazing experiences, giving customers a chance to sample and interact, all in a sociallydistanced and safe environment. BOOKS AND WINE Books and wine lovers unite! These two things go together like milk and cookies. Possibly the best combination ever. The second edition of Books & Wine took place on 11th September 2021 in an intimate setting at Trademark Hotel. Village SCENE BACHATA, KIZOMBA & SALSA NIGHT

The Latin experience has been heating up at Village Market for the past few months. The Foodcourt has been abuzz with Bachata, Kizomba and Salsa nights spread over different Fridays. All we can say is that it has only gotten better! The 1,2,3 cha cha cha, quick steps, food and fun, Fridays never felt so fun! The atmosphere has been filled with sights and sounds of Latin America while customers enjoyed food from the different restaurants at the Foodcourt. We hope to see you at the next Latin experience! Bring a friend...or 2...or 7.

PIZZA WEEK It was a pizza party at Ballpoint Social Club as they hosted the launch of Nairobi Pizza Week 2021 on 1st July 2021. The event was a day filled with fun games, instagrammable moments, good vibes and most importantly THE BEST PIZZAS IN TOWN! Nairobi Pizza Week returns to the city, and with it, the opportunity to indulge without an ounce of guilt – after all, it comes around only once a year! From 2-11 July pizza-lovers got a chance to get two pizzas for the price of one. Covid-19 pandemic may have cancelled most of last year's festivities, but local pizza restaurants have made great strides in embracing technology to keep going with a majority of restaurants signing up to online delivery services such as Uber Eats & Glovo.

Village The Village Cares pillar is centered on the Arts, Education, Environment and Health

O

ver the 25 years our shopping complex has been in existence, we have been committed and recommit ourselves to caring for the environment and community in Gigiri through collaboration with our neighbours and partners. We have collaborated with two partners on major sustainability projects that aim to conserve our environment by reducing the waste from textiles, footwear and plastic. Currently on its seventh year of partnership, Village Market collaborates with Africa Collects Textiles ACT! project which includes collection of textiles and footwear with the objective of creating a closed-product loop on a global scale. Kenya was the first country that rolled out the blue

print with Village Market being the first shopping mall in the country to embrace the project. Noting that apart from donating to charities it was almost impossible to upcycle, recycle or repurpose unused clothing, the pilot project primarily focused on upcycling and sustainable recycling possibilities that will realize textile reprocessing in the country, greatly contribute to environmental preservation and generate employment opportunities through the local establishment of a textile recycling economy. All profits from this project are donated to charity further solidifying the need for this project. The project has seen tonnes of textiles and shoe items donated by enthusiastic shoppers. The collection bin is located near the Blue Lily

flower shop opposite Miniso. Additionally, Village Market is collaborating with T3, a local recycling company in the ‘Trash to Treasure’ project. This project seeks to sensitize Village Market shoppers and the public on responsible disposal and upcycling of plastic. The partnership has created a life-sized whale that is an indictment and reminder of the severity of plastics in our water bodies, as well as being a drop off point for single use plastics. All shoppers and the public at large are encouraged to play their part in converting their PET plastic into textile thus offering a sustainable solution to the global plastic epidemic. The whale is located at the main entrance, all shoppers are encouraged during this season to bring in their used PET bottles to the whale. The two projects seek to create awareness on responsible consumption and mindfulness of our environment during the festive season.

wellness

EMBRACING A HAPPIER, HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE

“I

am well,” is often used as a response to the greeting, “How are you?” Despite that very common response, many people do not realize that being well is more than just a byword or trend. Wellness is the active process of making choices towards a healthy and fulfilling life. This matters because everything we do and every emotion we feel relates to our well-being and is absolutely crucial to living a higher quality of life. In turn, our well-being directly affects our actions and emotions. It is a continuous circle. Dr. Tendwa Ongas, a medical officer at the M.P. Shah Hospital, notes that wellness is an intentional, ongoing and holistic approach to making healthy choices for ourselves in various areas of life. “Wellness is not simply the absence of illness or stress, but a broad practice of internal and external behaviours even when experiencing challenges,” Said Dr Tendwa.

Wellness can be categorised within five main aspects. These include; physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual. To be considered “well,” it is imperative for all of these areas to be considered. Each of these aspects contributes to our own sense of wellness or quality of life, and each affects and overlaps the others. At times one may be more prominent than others, but neglect of any one dimension for any length of time may have adverse effects on overall health.

Regular check-ups Physical wellness is especially important as one advances in age. Therefore, for one to achieve optimal physical wellness, regular wellness check-ups are required. According to Dr Tendwa, while opinions vary, routine physical exams are generally recommended once a year if you're over the age of 50, and once every three years if you're younger than 50 and in good health. If you have a chronic disease or other ongoing health issues, you should see your doctor more often, regardless of your age. Regular wellness check-ups can help find potential health issues before they become a

problem. This then gives you the best chance for getting the right treatment quickly, thus avoiding any complications. This is what Dr Harsh Khoda, a metabolic balance coach and the head of medical services at the M.P. Shah Hospital’s Village Medical Centre, describes as “taking important steps toward living a longer, healthier life.” In a world that continually challenges us to be and do more, it is so easy to ignore self-care by pushing it forward to a future date. While we are too busy to notice, our wellness is slowly slipping away. While trying to juggle all the many responsibilities in our lives, we often don’t make the effort to take care of ourselves like we should. Do not wait. Take charge of your health and schedule an appointment with your doctor today.

Routine physical exams are generally recommended once a year if you're over the age of 50 38

PAYMENT OPTIONS

MAKE EQUITY’S CONVENIENT PAYMENT OPTIONS PART OF YOUR HOLIDAY PLAN For many people, the festive season is considered the most auspicious time of the year, suitable for making new beginnings and investing in fresh ventures. Typically making it the favourite part of the year for many. We plan for it; we save for it; we create time for it because it’s a period that provides us with an opportunity to rejuvenate, replenish and reconnect with friends and loved ones.

A

s the economy continues to open, it’s time to start thinking about the outdoors again. Celebrating the little pleasures of life. Being grateful for who and what we have. If there was one important lesson the pandemic taught us, it’s how quickly things can change. As spaces like the Village Market open up safely, it’s the season to indulge a little again. Sailing through the festive season isn’t always a smooth ride especially for businesses and their customers alike. You need reliable and convenient solutions to satisfy customers while maintaining payments and logistic efficiency.

Digital solutions To address some of these pain points, banks have evolved to provide end-to-end digital solutions that improve on operational efficiency to cater for the increasing transactions. Solutions from Equity like Pay with Equity, initially known as Eazzypay, allow businesses to receive payment via till, and reconcile payments. It is an interoperable platform that allows a business to receive payments from customers via a universal till number that accepts payments from Mpesa, Airtel Money, Pesalink, Equitel and the Equity Mobile App. This not only eliminates the

40

hassle of money transfers across platforms for customers, but enables real-time reconciliation for businesses while boosting their credit score incase they may require extra capital to boost stock. As people continue to make special plans for the festive season, Equity has deepened its efforts to ensure seamless customer experience through merchant partnerships at the Village Market. The universal Point of Sale (POS) congregates mobile wallets, and an array of debit and credit cards via strategic partnerships with payment networks such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express (AmEx), JCB, Diners and Union Pay. These partnerships ensure customers have an opportunity to carry out any transactions in a seamless and secure manner at any merchant outlet within the mall at no charge. Shopping for holiday gifts, planning for travel or perhaps you just want to enjoy a Saturday lunch at your favourite restaurant in the mall? You don’t need to carry cash or make trips to the ATMs for withdrawals. Get yourself a credit or debit card that suits your lifestyle. Equity’s range of credit or debit cards offer just that, and this might save you hundreds or maybe thousands at your favourite store through discounts and incentives. Financial planning can help you easily tide this seasonal spending. Equity’s premium cards

come with tailormade benefits. You will gain access to exclusive services and privileges all over the world. Mastercard range is from Platinum, World to World Elite, while Visa range include Infinite, Gold and Signature cards. Additionally, Equity American Express range consists of Gold and the Green credit cards with their own range of redeemable benefits. These cards have the tap-and-go feature, allowing contactless payments with their debit cards on an NFC (Near Field Communication) enabled Equity Point of Sale machine, enhancing quicker check outs to reduce human-to-human or surface contact.

World class Finally, while the Village Market is your favourite fashion, dining and entertainment mall with world class stores, it further broadens its retail offering by bringing shoppers to world class banking at Equity Supreme. An exclusive branch that serves individuals and businesses. To beat the festive hustle, you can access a wide range of financial and investment services through the relationship managers or at the classy lounge area inside the branch as you plan for the new year. We could all do with a break from inconveniences by making Equity part of our holiday plan.

STARTING THE JOURNEY

afresh

W

e were all devastated when Covid-19 hit. As borders shut down all around us, we are sure most of us felt the walls narrowing, bearing down on us and we couldn’t wait for things to get back to normal so we could travel again. Instead, the situation kept getting worse, countries adding more locks on their doors as the virus swept smiles away from our faces. But even though it took longer, the world learned to cope with the virus and scientists triumphantly announced the discovery of vaccines. The world slowly started to open up, countries spreading their folded arms to usher travellers in and without wasting time, we at Densey sprang into action and started getting travellers back on the road while adhering to the safety standards.

Planning However, things are just not the same. We saw how easy it was for our plans to be disrupted by something beyond our control and our takeaway from this is we need to plan ourselves even better to make sure life doesn't pass us by. With the New Year just around the corner, we would love you to

make resolutions that will rejuvenate your travel experience in 2021 and beyond. One of the ways of doing this is backpacking. If you didn't know this already, backpacking gives you the freedom to travel and discover your world on a budget. It boosts your confidence since you learn to make decisions while on the move. Backpacking also helps you to be flexible and if Covid-19 has taught us anything is that only those who are flexible enough get to weather the storm. You learn to bend and bend and just when you think you are about to snap, you bend some more. You should also aim to discover the gem around you. Nairobi National Park is the only

Backpacking gives you the freedom to travel and discover your world on a budget 42

National Park in the world within a city, but many Nairobi dwellers will confess they visited the park for the first time during the pandemic. With the counties' borders closed, the park proved to be a great escape for the city dwellers. So endeavor to look around you for all the beautiful spots hiding in plain sight. Sample new restaurants that offer more than just food. Visit the museums and all the historical sites within our borders, including the August Seventh Memorial Park.

New Year This New Year, plan to travel with your family, yes, but also plan to travel solo. Solo Travelling helps you reflect on your life. It helps you learn to be alone with your thoughts and soak in the beautiful moments while on the road. When the time comes when social interactions are minimal and even frowned upon, like it is right now, you won't feel your walls closing in on you. But most importantly, have a travel bucket list and be dedicated to it. Travel within the country and travel outside the country when you can because it’s time for a new beginning and there’s so much to explore.

NEW

beginnings We have undoubtedly lived through two years of an uncertain pandemic. With it a lot of anxiety that has shaken the fabric of our society, our being and world at large

W

hile we may not be out of the woods yet, human ingenuity has shown us how we can quickly pull ourselves and adapt to new conditions and challenges. We are still here, we are still breathing, and continue to hold dear all of our loved ones that we have lost during this time. Each New Year holds new promises, and 2022 is no different. It is time to evaluate and make plans for bigger goals. Read on.

The promise of good health We have learnt first-hand that good health and wellness starts with what you put inside your body. To boost your immunity and keep your wellbeing at an optimum level, stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables from Zucchini Green Groceries or the Veggie sections at Carrefour Market, home delivery options are also available from the

Zucchini website and Carrefour app. For that extra oomph to pump up essential micro-elements in your system, Healthy-U, Elixir, Garnett Pharmacy and Goodlife Pharmacy have a wide array of healthy supplements and products to support your overall inner health. Socially-Distanced Meet Ups While we may still not freely hug our friends or loved ones, we have adjusted to socially-distanced meet ups. The lockdown taught all of us that the time we spend with those we love is what will matter at the end. So enjoy the promise of social wellness with any of Village Market’s 50 top-of-the-range food outlets. All the restaurants and food outlets have aligned with the Ministry of Health’s Covid-19 prevention protocols.

Check out the full restaurant listing on our website: www.villagemarket-kenya.com.

Time Out To enjoy the promise of mindfulness, there is no greater time travel like that found between the pages of a good book. All genres can be found at Text Book Center or at Nairobi’s coolest book store Between the Lines, also at the newly added Half Priced Books. Need to play some games or watch the day go by? Garden Lounge at the second floor does just that. Sit and be unbothered, isn’t that a perfect plan? Take time to smell the flowers at Blue Lily Flower Shop, enjoy Village Market’s most beautiful green space and adopt a plant or five at the Greenit Décor near the post office. We dare you to talk to the plants, they lovingly talk back!

It is time to evaluate and make plans for bigger goals

Everything in between We understand that the day to day can be a drab, get your laundry done in no time at Tintoria or Lorenzo Dry Cleaners, fix your tyres at Kingsway, get your DIY supplies at Power Innovation, receive or send your packages via the Post Office or DHL, get your furry baby checked at Shifaz Vet Clinic or have your varied repair works sorted out at the Rooftop Parking Service Center. Should you need state-of-the-art shoe care, Wina Classic is the new shoe care shop at the food court, ground floor next to the photoshop. We offer the joys of convenience all under one roof. Check out the A to Z listing and our website www.villagemarket-kenya.com for the full list of our service outlets.

New Beginnings 2022 Village Market is here for you as you get to do life, the ordinary, the everyday and the specials, take charge of that which you have control over, for that which you cannot, find peace. Be content. Be happy.
