]WELCOME

Get set to explore more of Tanzania t is my pleasure to introduce the fifth edition of Explore Tanzania. It has been four years since the last guide was published and in that time tourism in Tanzania – and across the world – has had to face some challenges. Yet here we are in 2023 and the outlook is very positive. Tanzania’s tourism industry is staging a comeback, with annual earnings surging to US$2.99 billion in July, up more than US$1 billion on last year’s figures. Tourist arrivals have also increased by 37.2%, reaching a record 1,658,043 visitors.

beaches. Not quite ready for an ascent of Kilimanjaro? Explore the hiking trails of the Southern Highlands or the Usambara Mountains or take on Kili’s near neighbour Mt Meru.

We welcome the new influx of visitors and intend Explore Tanzania to act as a guide to the riches that await them across all regions of East Africa’s largest country. While the showstopping Big Five adventures of the Serengeti and the national parks of the Northern Circuit pull the crowds, this edition of Explore Tanzania also reveals the remote and wonderful wildlife to see along Tanzania’s western borders, including the chance to commune with human-habituated chimps in their mountain-top forest sanctuary. Similarly, we showcase the idyll islands of the Zanzibar archipelago, but also provide options to visit more Swahili trading towns along the length of Tanzania’s coast, each with their own historic story to tell and a host of exquisite

It’s never been easier to link these attractions into a trip of a lifetime with our national carrier increasing its network of destinations across the country – including Bukoba and Kigoma, which are gateways to the remote east coast of Lake Victoria and the even more rarely visited Lake Tanganyika coastline, respectively – and the almost completed Standard Gauge Railway to link Dar es Salaam with Mwanza. Such travels will give you a true flavour of the expansive experience to be had in our country.

Our wealth of attractions and facilities means there is something here for every kind of traveller. As you’ll see inside the pages of Explore Tanzania, we can cater for those who want adventure or peace and quiet, wildlife big and small and from flora to fauna and a cultural experience both traditional and modern.

When and wherever you go you are sure to receive the warm welcome our country is famous for. Karibu Tanzania!

]TANZANIA

Explore Tanzania with us…

anzania is a country boasting some of the world’s most iconic attractions. Here you can come to conquer Mt Kilimanjaro, safari in the Serengeti or take a beach break on the paradise islands of the Zanzibar archipelago. It’s a tourism trio any country would be proud to have within its borders. But, beyond the headliners are a host of hidden gems to encourage visitors to extend their stay or return soon. Talking of hidden gems, have you heard of Tanzanite? It is one of the world’s rarest precious stones, found exclusively beneath a 2km-wide stretch of the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro. Its rarity is only matched by its beauty with its unique crystalline structure meaning different colours can be seen depending on from where you are looking at it.

Attractions The unique gemstone’s everchanging beauty makes it is the perfect emblem for Tanzania. The country also reveals new wonders from every vantage point whether it is from 5,895 m up on the Roof of Africa at Mt Kilimanjaro’s peak, gazing over endless

savannah populated by an extraordinarily rich array of wildlife or from underneath the Indian Ocean where spectacular marine life from humpback whales to iridescent scorpion fish swim amid pristine coral reefs. Summiting Mt Kilimanjaro may be on most climbers’ bucket lists, but we also have the neighbouring 4,566-metre Mt Meru, the ‘Mountain of God’ Ol Doinyo Lengai, and the jaw-droppingly beautiful Usambara Mountains Range to name just a few. Beyond Serengeti there are 21 other national parks in Tanzania, many with Big Five sightings potential, including Ngorongoro – one of the most densely populated conservation areas in Africa with over 25,000 animals within its steep crater walls – and ‘beach meets bush’ wildlife adventures of the coastal Saadani National Park. Beaches of sugar-fine sand and crystalline waters are not just the preserve of the Zanzibar archipelago, they fill the country’s Swahili coast from Pangani in the north to the idyllic Mikindani Bay in the south. Within the 2023/24 edition of Explore Tanzania we invite you to come with us as we reveal the breadth of attractions and

]TANZANIA adventures this country offers. Just as any good local guide on Mt Kilimanjaro will advise novice climbers to progress “pole, pole” (slowly, slowly) so it is worth taking your time to savour the people and places in every corner of this amazing country. There is something here for every kind of traveller. Intrepid types can enjoy an active adventure holiday or if you are in a need of a restorative break there are peaceful, exotic escapes to be had. Or why not combine the two with beach chills to decompress after the safari thrills. If your idea of a beach break is packed with water-sports and lively bars then the southern shores of Zanzibar Island are a haven for wind surfers and beach parties while head to the ‘green island’ of Pemba or the unspoilt Matema Beach in south-west Tanzania and it will likely be just you enjoying the shimmering waters of Lake Nyasa. In addition to its breath-taking beauty and vast array of wildlife, Tanzania is one of the culturally diverse countries in the world with 120 tribes and distinct ethnic groups. Some of them, such as hunter-gatherers the Hadzabe around Lake Eyasi and the pastoralist Maasai and Chagga on the slopes of Kilimanjaro retain their centuries-old ways of life, which it is possible to experience on organised tours. Visits provide a fascinating insight into ancient cultures and bring a new appreciation of the land that they have such a close relationship with.

Culture An important part of the life of the disparate tribal cultures in Tanzania is art and music. Visitors to southern Tanzania will find examples of abstract ebony carvings and masks of the Makonde tribe while the streets of historic Stone Town on Zanzibar Island are renowned for their Arab-influenced elaborately carved wooden doors. Elsewhere markets across the country will sell handwoven fabric khanga and kitenge as well as Maasai beadwork among a host of traditional handicrafts. More modern art movements such as the Tinga Tinga paintings with their brilliant colours and stylised Tanzanian scenes are now world renowned while cultural centres such as Nafasi Arts Space in Dar es Salaam and the Bagamoyo Arts and Cultural Institute are bringing through a new generation of talent. The country’s bustling commercial capital Dar es Salaam has an especially vibrant cultural scene. It has given birth to two unique modern musical movements in Bongo Flava – a Tanzanian take on

hip-hop – and the hyper-speed electronica of Singeli. Both voice a new generation of Tanzania – the country has one of the youngest populations on earth with over half of its 55 million population under 25 – yet draw on elements of traditional music such as taarab, which can still be heard along the Swahili Coast and is being actively preserved through organisations such as the Dhow Countries Music Academy in Stone Town, Zanzibar.

Tanzania tourism has sought to support rather than intrude on traditional ways of life and have a similarly light footprint when it comes to the environment. It’s a move ecotourists will welcome and they will find plenty of options for a sustainable visit from carbon-neutral safaris, plenty of protected land and marine reserves and even entire island, such as Chumbe Island Coral Park, aiming at zero impact on the environment.

Opening up the country once again to tourism after the global restrictions of the pandemic has been a key part of governmental policy since the swearing in of President Samia Suluhu Hassan in April 2022. The sector is now seeing a rebound with data from the Bank of Tanzania revealing tourism earnings surging from US$ 1.95 billion in July 2022 to US$ 2.99 billion in July 2023.

Conferences Tanzania is also emerging as an African leader in the rapidly growing meetings, conferences and events industry. It has the 1,000 person capacity Julius Nyerere Convention Centre, in Dar es Salaam, and the even bigger Arusha International Conference Centre to host large-scale events as well as a host of excellent MICE hotels in both cities. The appeal to delegates – with downtime options of sun, sand and safaris – is obvious.

11

]WESTERN CIRCUIT or tourists who like to take the road less travelled, Western Tanzania provides the country’s wildest experiences. Here you’ll find remote forest sanctuaries for Tanzania’s premier primate populations as well as the country’s third largest national park, which boasts a wonderful array of habitats and is packed with herds of buffalo, elephant and antelope yet precious few human visitors. It’s time to go west in search of adventure.

Getting there That just a trickle of travellers head to the Western Region is largely due to the challenges in getting here. However, Air Tanzania’s introduction of daily flights from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma has been game changing. From the region’s capital and port city it is only a three-hour local ‘lake taxi’ north to Gombe National Park while less-time-pressed travellers can take the MV Liemba, which transports cargo and passengers the length of Lake Tanganyika – the longest freshwater lake in the world – and calls at Kigoma as well as Mgambo, the port closest to Mahale Mountains National Park. The handful of lodges in Katavi National Park still rely on just a couple of 12-seater flights a week for guests, but intrepid visitors

12

E X P L ORE TA N Z A NI A & Z A N Z IB A R 2 0 2 3-24

here relish that the park remains not for the masses, but for the real safari enthusiast.

Gombe Stream National Park Tanzania’s smallest national park protects 52 sq km of picturesque rainforest on the north-east coast of Lake Tanganyika and the human-habituated Kasakela community of wild chimpanzees that call it home. The plight of the primates here has had a global profile since the late 1960s when British primatologist Jane Goodall revolutionised our understanding of chimps’ behaviour, finding they share some of humans’ most impressive abilities, such as making and using tools, as well as their worst with rival chimp communities battling each other. The Gombe Stream Research Centre continues what is now the longest-running wild chimpanzee study in the world and there is much scope for visitors to learn about and contribute to the work going on here. As well as chimpanzee tracking, you can stroll along the park’s sandy lake shoreline or hike to the Kakombe waterfall that cascades 20 metres down a cliff surrounded by rich forest. Adventuring on foot will reveal plenty more primates – the park is home to olive baboons and a melange of monkeys – as well bush

pigs, bushbucks, snakes, hippos, leopards and more than 250 species of birds. You can even swim and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. Thankfully, hippos and crocodiles tend to stay away from Gombe so you can relax and focus on spotting the more than one hundred species of colourful tropical fish that fizz around the shores here.

Mahale Mountains National Park If you are looking for your own personal paradise, this remote national park shrouded by mountains and clad in verdant tropical vegetation that runs down to beaches of powder white sand along the lakeshore should fit the bill. It’s not only beautiful, but it is also home to Tanzania's densest population of primates: yellow baboon, red colobus, blue, red-tailed and vervet monkeys bring the forest alive with their chatter – and then, of course, there are the chimpanzees. There are around 900 chimps living in the park with one group – the Mimikire clan – the subject of seven decades of study by Japanese researchers. In that time these chimps have become quite used to humans so visitors can get up close on guided treks (as long as they are in good health as the chimps are susceptible to human diseases such as flu and colds). Studying troops of these chimps – often with super-cute babies clinging on to their mums – reveals just how human are closest genetic relatives are. There are some gorgeous beachside lodges here and longer stays will allow the chance to climb the mist-shrouded Mount Nkungwe, at 2,462 metres the highest of six peaks in the Mahale Mountains. It will take three days with a couple of nights’ rough camping en route. Note: The Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) has stipulated that the minimum age to take part in chimpanzee trekking is 12 years old. So Gombe and Mahale can only be part of your family safari if you have older teenagers.

Katavi National Park Katavi National Park is one of East Africa’s least explored parks with the minimal human presence allowing untamed nature to thrive into a wilderness paradise. Located inland from the southeastern coast of Lake Tanganyika, the 4,471 square kilometre Katavi National Park is the third largest in the country with a

vast array of habitats from flood plains of thick reeds and dense waterways to woodlands, open grasslands, forests and pristine seasonal lakes. The Katuma River is the nexus of most game viewing in the park. It is populated by hundreds-strong pods of hippos while elephants approach to drink and large crocodiles bask on its muddy banks. Katavi is also home to the largest herds of buffalo on the planet with predators such as lion, leopard and cheetah never too far away. Wild dogs also roam the park. Game viewing is best in the dry season – May to October – as the wildlife disperses into the woodland once the rains arrive. When the dry weather returns huge herds of buffalo, zebra and impala congregate around shrinking seasonal watering holes such as Lake Katavi. Near the lake you’ll also find the tamarind tree that local tribe the Wabende believe is inhabited by the legendary hunter spirit Katabi (for whom the park is named).

Katavi National Park facts ] Remote location with refreshingly low numbers of annual visitors

] Walking safaris are allowed at Katavi for a real bush experience

] Wide array of large game, including impressive herds of thousandstrong buffalo

] Incredible birdlife with over 400 species

] Densest populations of hippo and crocodile in Tanzania

]ATTRACTIONS

10 reasons to explore Tanzania

Looking for your next holiday destination? Here are 10 compelling reasons why it should be Tanzania. Mix of the old and the new Tanzania is a fast-moving country that is fixed on an exciting future for its young population. Investment here has rocketed with 58 projects worth US$ 931.60 million approved in August this year. The commercial capital Dar es Salaam has been transformed into a megapolis with major projects such as the Tanzanite Bridge and the soon-to-becompleted Bus Rapid Transit system helping commuters navigate the city quickly and safely. Zanzibar is also undergoing an infrastructure overhaul with record-breaking buildings in the pipeline such as Burj Zanzibar, a sustainable project set to be the world’s tallest timber tower, and Zanzibar Domino, a huge hotel, marina and entertainment complex to be built on a man-made island just off the north coast of Unguja (Zanzibar Island). With

fast-paced growth in tech and telecommunications, Tanzania is a model of modern Africa, but it still preserves its traditions from the unchanged ways of its ancient tribes, its historic Swahili trading towns that bead the Indian Ocean coast and even all the way back to the first beginnings of the ‘Mother Continent’ at Olduvai Gorge. In its mix of the old and the new, Tanzania gives visitors an insight into the real Africa.

Festivals The Tanzanian calendar is filled with celebratory events. Some are ingrained within the country’s history such as the Wanyambo Festival in January that showcases the arts and crafts of Dar es Salaam and the four-day Mwaka Kogwa festival in July and August in which

]ATTRACTIONS Zanzibari men beat each other with banana stalks as a symbolic resolution of conflicts while the women seemingly have far more fun dressing up and singing. There are also plenty of more modern festivals that embody the country’s achievements in cinema, The Zanzibar Film Festival (ZIFF) in June; music, Sauti za Busara in February; fashion, Swahili Fashion Week in December; and sport, The Kilimanjaro Marathon in October.

The leading lion destination Not to brag, but Tanzania is home to the world’s biggest population of lions in the wild. The Serengeti has the lion’s share, sorry, with more than 3,000 but there are around 12,000 more of the big cats across the country. There are so many of them that some lions appear to adopted quirks to stand out, such as the prides of Saadani National Park who have been known to wander onto the beach and then there’s the tree-climbing lions in northern Tanzania's Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park.

Ecotourism Tanzania’s dedication to conservation of its natural riches is well-known and well-established. It gazetted its first national park, the Serengeti, in 1951 and now there are 22 parks covering close to 30 per cent of the country’s land. In addition, a string of marine reserves protects the fragile coral reefs and diverse underwater life of Tanzania and the Zanzibar archipelago. Visitors here have plenty of opportunities to ensure their stay leaves a feather-light footprint on the delicate Tanzania ecosystem they have come to experience. There is a large choice of safari lodges and beachside resorts that are powered by renewable energy, adhere to the country’s nationwide plastics ban, offer local, sustainable food and involve and educate the local community in ecotourism. By paying national park fees and choosing accommodation that is committed to a sustainable future through community outreach and conservation programmes, tourists can give back while travelling.

Find your thrills Tanzania’s diverse terrain of valleys, plateaus, plains, mountains and beaches is there to be explored in all manner of exciting ways. The Usambara Mountains have a cool climate that is ideal for hikes or for more of a challenge take on the steep ascent to the crater rim of active volcano Ol Doinyo Longo. Cycling options range from city tours of Dar es Salaam to mountain biking in the foothills of Kilimanjaro or through the forests of Pemba. For more off-road adventures Zanzibar has quad bikes to hire while the island’s breezy southeast coast resort Paje is the place for kite-surfing with water sports options such as kayaking, swimming with dolphins and paddle boarding are available across the archipelago. Inland water adventures include white-water rafting along the fast-flowing Rufiji river or Nile perch fishing in Lake Victoria.

…and chills If you prefer a holiday that puts on pause the pressures of a busy life, Tanzania has plenty of tranquil escapes to get away from it all. If you want to soak up some Swahili culture, but avoid the crowds of Stone Town, head to deserted beaches of Pangani in the north or Mikindani in the south. Alternatively, head to Pemba for a select group of beachside resorts cloistered in forest and only accessible by boat for some real Robinson Crusoe feels.

]ATTRACTIONS The coast is a way of life When you’ve had your fill of swimming in the azure waters in between sunning yourself on the vanilla white sands of Tanzania’s coastal resorts, don’t forget that our coastline is a way of life to many Tanzanians and exploring will be a fascinating insight into the country. On the northern coast of Zanzibar Island, be sure to check out the boatbuilders handcrafting – not a nail is used – the wooden fishing dhows that speckle the shimmering waters. As the tide goes out also be on the lookout for the kanga-clad women seaweed farmers wading out in the shallows to tend their crop. It’s a huge part of the blue economy here and you’ll find the aquatic superfood as a prime ingredient in a host of local beauty products sold on the islands. Fish markets are an excellent place to start the day in Tanzania. You’ll not only get to see the variety of the catch of the day, but you’ll get a feel for everyday life here amid the bustle.

The best tour guides – including the President! Whether you are getting a new perspective on Tanzania’s wild landscape on a nature walk with a Maasai guide, learning the architectural heritage behind the winding streets of Stone Town from a university student or sharing the birding knowledge of a safari guide in Tarangire National Park, you’ll know the irreplaceable quality of having a local guide. We like to think we have some of the best and we can now add our esteemed President Samia Suluhu Hassan to that list. In 2022 Mama Samia revealed some of her favourite places in her homeland to US journalist Peter Greenberg in the global hit television programme The Royal Tour. Her highlights included the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park as well as the school she attended while growing up in Zanzibar.

Kilimanjaro In a country of superlatives, could this be the ultimate? In Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania has the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world. Climbing to its 5,895-metre peak is an unforgettable achievement. Tanzanians have been hitting the headlines recently for some audacious ascents – including Tangaborn athlete reaching the top in a record-breaking eight hours and 36 minutes (it takes most people between five and nine days) and

Dar’s DJ Joozey, who was the first to play a gig on the top – but for most people just reaching the summit is enough. With teams of experienced local guides and plenty of prime accommodation in the mountain’s foothills to offer pre- and post-climb comfort, getting to the ‘Roof of Africa’ is unforgettable, but very achievable.

It’s a foodies’ heaven Dishes here are an aromatic delight, infused with cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper from the ‘spice island’ of Zanzibar. You can also follow your nose to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee in cafés and on most street corners. The beans – prized the world over – will be sourced from plantations in Kilimanjaro and the Southern Highlands, which coffee connoisseurs can visit on organised tours. These fertile foothills also produce the country’s bountiful fruit and legumes. Eating fresh and healthy food here is easy whether it’s grabbing a fresh coconut from a street seller, who will slice the top off the hirsute fruit, allowing you to drink the electrolyte-rich contents, or plates of traditional Tanzanian food piled high with vitamin-rich cassava leaves.

]TRAVEL

Travel tips for Tanzania ith Tanzania offering border-to-border adventures, ease of travel is paramount. In recent years there have been major investments made in Tanzania’s road and rail infrastructure and this coupled with some intrepid spirit on the part of the traveller should ensure that no corner of the country is out of reach. Here is a guide to the best ways to get around.

By air Tanzania has one of the most competitive domestic air transport sectors in Africa. The national carrier, Air Tanzania currently serves 10 destinations in the country, including Bukoba and Geita that both open up the western shores of Lake Victoria and remote Kigosi and Burigi Chato National Parks, as well as Kigoma, the gateway to Gombe Stream National Park and Lake Tanganyika. Precision Air, the country’s leading independent airline, counts Mtwara among its domestic destinations, connecting travellers to the beautiful but rarely visited southern coast. Both airlines have partnerships with international carriers meaning they seamlessly connect foreign tourists with Tanzania at the country’s three international airports in Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar.

By road Tanzania has made great progress in reforming its trunk roads, improving the quality of the road network. While the dirt roads of reserves and national parks call for four-wheel drive vehicles, decent bitumen roads link the main cities. This means that the country’s buses are a smooth and cheap option for long journeys. Buses are also transforming city transport with the BRT service in Dar es Salaam speeding up commutes with its own traffic-free lane.

By train In 2024, Tanzania is set to introduce electric trains capable of reaching 160 kph – the fastest in East Africa – on a 546-kilometre line from Dar to Makutupora in the Dodoma Region. Decidedly not a bullet train is the Tazara Railway which has two

speeds – slow and stop – and creaks its way a full 1,860 km south from Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi, in Zambia, with Mbeya among its many station stops along the way. Ostensibly, the full journey takes around 46 hours, but the trip is deemed a success if it is hours rather than days late. But punctuality is not the point here. Book a first-class sleeping compartment – around US$ 40 – and just enjoy the ride with views from the carriage window including a big chunk of the wildlife-packed Nyerere National Park.

By ferry There are fleets of modern, fast ferries that connect Dar es Salaam with Zanzibar Island – the trip takes around 90 minutes – and the biggest ferry operator, Azam Marine, also connects Zanzibar Island with Pemba and then back to the mainland at Tanga if you wish. On Lake Victoria there are ferries to the larger islands, including national parks Rubondo Island and Saanane. There is also a ferry that travels the length of Lake Tanganyika with stops at Kigoma, where you can get a lake taxi to Gombe National Park, and further south for Mahale National Park.

The one for enjoying Swahili culture in style… Where? Unguja (also known as Zanzibar Island). What? This is very much the daddy of the Zanzibar archipelago’s holiday options: at 1,666 sq km it is bigger and brasher than the others and with a huge choice of luxury hospitality options to ensure you enjoy your island break in style. Why? High-end hospitality investment has hit the island in a big way so while there is no end of spectacular hotels to choose from, off-grid escapes are rare. The popular coastal areas of Paje

in the south-east and Nungwi in the north still maintain a balance between sleepy fishing village and beach side resort. Inland, the Jozani Forest – Zanzibar’s only national park – is a great escape with walking trails and canoe trips through the mangrove swamps. Must see: Wandering Stone Town – the old port area of the capital city – is essential to soak up Swahili culture. While you’ll now find plenty of exclusive hotels, boutiques, restaurants and bars within its winding streets, the Unesco Heritage Site is still a living museum, showcasing ancient architecture and a way of life of life that have gone unchanged for centuries. Take in a taarab (traditional Swahili music) concert, explore the bustling markets and reflect on the port’s dark past at the Old Slave Market. For

all its history, the town is still culturally vibrant today with some of its biggest internationally renowned events such as the Sauti za Busara music festival and the Zanzibar Film Festival taking over the awesome amphitheatre in the Old Fort.

centre, nature trails and amazing diving opportunities are now offered to day visitors who arrive by boat from Unguja while the recent building of an eco-lodge with beach restaurant means guests can enjoy longer stays.

The one for an untouched island adventure…

Why? Everything is run here with state-of-the-art eco-technology – rainwater harvesting, solar energy and solar water heating, composting toilets and vegetative greywater filtration – aimed at zero impact on the environment. The eco tip-toeing extends to protecting the island’s rare wildlife such as Ader’s duiker, roseate terns and marine turtles. Humpback Whales.

Where? Pemba What? About 80km northeast of Unguja, Pemba is the archipelago’s second largest island. Early Arab sailors called it ‘El Huthera’, meaning ‘The Green’, and it is still largely a fertile paradise of gently rolling hills, fragrant clove farms, lush forest and coral reefs teeming with marine life. Why? Pemba is a serene escape with the locals paying scant attention to what few tourists arrive and little to get in the way of whiling away your stay on its white sands with the occasional dip in the sapphire waters.

Must see: One of the island’s strangest denizens is the coconut crab with a 300-strong population thriving here. After dinner, overnight guests have the chance to encounter the world’s largest land-living crab on a walk into the coral rag forest. At this time these scavengers are on the look-out for food with – as their name suggest – coconut a favourite on the menu with the giant crab using its curved and claw-like legs to scale the island’s palm trees for their high-hanging fruit.

Tranquil as it is, Pemba’s natural treasures provide a wild playground for active visitors. Jump on bicycles to explore traditional villages and ancient ruins or take to the crystalline waters for swimming and kayaking. The Pemba channel is reputed to offer the best diving in East Africa with untouched coral reefs, bath warm water and superb visibility. Must see: There was a time when Pemba was covered almost coast-to-coast in tropical forest. Now just a section remains, the Ngezi Nature Reserve, but its double-canopy denseness still presents a magical world to visitors where bird life abounds and vervet monkeys swing from vines. There are trails for guided tours with the longest reaching Vumawimbi Beach while night tours offer the chance to spot the forest’s endemic nocturnal denizens such as the Pemba scops owl and gigantic fruit bat, the Pemba flying fox.

The one to ensure you leave the lightest of environmental footprints… Where? Chumbe Island What? This small private island a few km off Unguja was uninhabited until, in 1991, its forested land and surrounding coral reef was developed as a nature reserve. A visitor and education

]ZANZIBAR The one for unforgettable close-up encounters with whale sharks… Where? Mafia Island (Kisiwa cha Mafia in Swahili) What? The Mafia archipelago is made up of five islands – Bwejuu, Mbarakum, Juani, Jibondo and Mafia. The latter is the third largest island in Zanzibar and situated 160 km to the south of Unguja. Much of the southern stretch of its coastline is protected by the Mafia Island Marine Park, the largest protected area in the Indian Ocean and seasonal home to marine giants such as whale sharks. Why? Its pristine reefs and plankton-packed waters mean Mafia Island offers some of the best diving in the world. The season to swim with filter-feeding whale sharks here is the longest in the world with trade winds pushing a layer of plankton-packed ocean water towards the island, encouraging the sharks to linger here from September to February. The waters here are also an excellent spot to watch humpback whales make their way up and down the coast as part of their annual migration. Add in incredible secluded beaches such as Ras Kisimani, just across from Bwejuu Island, and Utende Beach, which edges onto Chole Bay, and you have the perfect aquatic adventure holiday.

Must see: As well as its marine-life packed ocean depths, Mafia Island has a deep cultural history. Like Unguja, has long been a crucial and cosmopolitan stop-off for Indian Ocean seafaring routes. The remains of its trading heyday, dating back to the 13th Century, can be seen in ruins such as those at Kisimani Mafia – evidence of what is thought to be the earliest settlement on the island.

The one for an exclusive island paradise… Where? Mnemba Island What? This tiny – about 1.5km in circumference – private island located 3km off the northeast coast of Unguja that houses a luxury beachside resort for just 24 guests. Why? This is the ultimate in barefoot luxury accommodation. The andBeyond resort has 12 beachside bandas just footsteps from the cerulean waters and a few swimming strokes from the Mnemba Atoll, a coral reef that encircles the island and provides one of the best scuba and snorkelling spots in Zanzibar with hundreds of species of colourful marine life including darting before your eyes. This is an exclusive escape – billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates is a regular (and rumoured owner) here – and can feel like you have your own private island at times. However, if you ever need some TLC, the resort has two staff to every guest and sumptuous services within the shade of the island’s casuarina pine forest include massage, yoga and even a plate of sushi at sunset if that takes your fancy. Must see: While human guests on the island are restricted to just a select few, Mnemba does have plenty of wild inhabitants. Its beach is a popular nesting spot for green turtles and during hatching season – usually February and March – hotel guests can join experienced staff on a sunset trip to see one of the wonders of the natural world as the hatchlings make their tentative trip to the ocean.

]THE NORTHERN SAFARI CIRCUIT

A migration of millions in the most spectacular setting anzania’s northern circuit is the most celebrated safari area in the world with an incredible density of Big Five animals – buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino – across national parks such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Nowhere in Africa has more lions than the Serengeti, which is home to over 3,000 of the predators. The big cats haunt the perilous Great Migration of almost two million wildebeest, one of the most sought-after attractions in Tanzania in which giant herds of the grazing animals travel in an endless loop between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara in Kenya in search of greener lands and fresh vegetation. This incredible spectacle takes place against the backdrop of the Serengeti’s almost tree-less grassland stretching to the horizon – the national park’s name derives from the Maasai word ‘Siringit’, which translates as ‘the place where the land runs on forever’ – and is regarded as one of the natural wonders of the modern world. It’s a journey fraught with danger with lions, leopards and hyenas lying in wait to thin out the herd and there are crocodiles lurking

the Grumeti river en-route. From June to October, when the crossing of the Serengeti begins in earnest, visitors get a chance for a close-up view of this magnificent spectacle. The Serengeti’s diversity and profusion of animals is unrivalled with the highest concentration of large predators in the world. As well as the lions, there is with an estimated 9,000 hyenas and 1,000 leopards, along with the highest density of cheetahs on the continent.

Tribes The 3,000-metre-high rim of the Ngorongoro crater shelters a jaw-dropping array of forests, lakes and swamps that are home to a profuse showcase of Tanzania's finest wildlife from lion, elephant, rhino, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, hyena, golden jackal, ostrich and crowned cranes. These prime animal attractions mean the circuit has become increasingly busy, but it is still possible to escape the crowds and find a quiet corner if you know where to go among the circuit’s national parks, game reserves, conservation areas and private E X P L ORE TA N Z A NI A & Z A N Z IB A R 2 0 2 3-24

]THE NORTHERN SAFARI CIRCUIT concessions. There are even small sections of the Serengeti that are out of bounds to motor vehicles, allowing walking safaris. Lake Manyara National Park – with its two million flamingos fringing the shoreline of its vast saltwater lake and its renowned tree-climbing lions – and the beautiful, baobab-packed Tarangire National Park – which is a magnet for migratory animals, including huge herds of elephants, during the dry season – both offer superb game viewing away from the crowds. Aside from the animals, the Northern Circuit also allows the chance to experience ancient, largely unchanged human civilisations such as the pastoralist Maasai and Samburu tribes as well as the Hadzabe, considered one of the world’s last hunter-gatherer tribes, that live off the land around Lake Eyasi in the Arusha region.

Hiking Life abounds in this fertile region so perhaps it is not surprising that the earliest evidence of human life is to be found here. Hundreds of fossilized bones and stone tools in the area dating back millions of years were found at the Olduvai Gorge, a 90-metre deep canyon just north west of Ngorongoro. If you are flying into the airports at Kilimanjaro or Arusha, you may want to begin your northern circuit with a day trip to Arusha National Park before venturing west to the Serengeti. It has the world’s largest population of giraffes and contains the impressive Mount Meru, which is Tanzania’s second highest mountain. If you want to go one higher – and indeed higher than anywhere else in Africa – the 5,895-metre Mt Kilimanjaro is just 100km away. It is contained within the Kilimanjaro National Park that celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023. As well as the scaling the ‘Roof of Africa’, the park offers plenty more hiking and climbing opportunities with waterfalls, coffee plantations and hot springs along the way.

Ngorongoro Crater ] Roughly 25,000 large animals live in the crater itself. ] The crater hosts the densest population of lions on Earth. ] It is possible to spot the Big Five in a single day, including the rare black rhino.

]THE SOUTHERN SAFARI CIRCUIT

Head south for solo safari adventures anzania’s southern circuit is popular with visitors who are after a safari adventure free of the crowds that throng the Serengeti and the north’s other headlinegrabbing attractions. Yours will frequently be the only vehicle on the landscape offering a chance to take your time in communing with the environment, its wildlife and some of the most unusual and less-visited sights in Tanzania. Nowhere is that sense of getting off the beaten track to areas that feel more remote more apparent than the fathomless wilderness of the Nyerere National Park, which at 30,893 sq km, is the largest of its kind in Africa. It was established in 2019, taking over the northern sector of the vast Selous Game Reserve, a Unesco World Heritage Site. With the Rufiji river running through the park, there is the opportunity for boating safaris, in which you can get close to crocodiles, hippos and more than 400 species of bird. Nyerere National Park is home to more than 2,000 lions and also known for its prolific population of African wild dog. There is also plenty of room to roam in Ruaha National Park, the largest of its kind in East Africa. An estimated 12,000 elephants

54

E X P L ORE TA N Z A NI A & Z A N Z IB A R 2 0 2 3-24

migrate through the greater Ruaha ecosystem – which includes Rungwa Game Reserve and Usangu Game Reserve – each year the park is also a habitat for wild dog population as well as lion, zebra, jackal and the bat-eared fox. They may not have quite the same density of wildlife as their northern counterparts, but they do have the diversity and working harder for your sightings means the reward feels much greater. There’s wildlife diversity too in Mikumi National Park. This tract of wilderness that has drawn comparisons to the Serengeti plains has the potential for Big Five sightings and is just 280 km west of Dar es Salaam so is a great choice for a safari break from the city. Beyond the wildlife, the southern district encompasses a huge variety of terrain. From the forest-swathed mountains of Udzungwa through the meadows of wildflowers in Kitulo National Park – famous for its endemic orchids and known as the ‘Serengeti of Flowers’ – and the wetlands of the Kilombero Valley to the crystalline waters of Lake Nyasa there is something to appeal to every nature lover.

ne of the great attractions of Tanzania is its amazing 800km coastline that offers not just unspoilt white sand beaches and dream diving opportunities, but also historic Swahili trading towns and even wildlife wonders. Going from north to south, we begin with Tanga. The port city has been a sought-after Indian Ocean trading post since the 16th century with first the Portuguese and then Oman occupying the region before, in the early 19th century, Germany intended it to become the capital of German East Africa. It may soon return to its trading heyday with a large port scheduled for construction and the city to become the terminus of the forthcoming East African Crude Oil Pipeline, but for now it has a sleepy seaside charm. Bicycles outnumber other vehicles on its streets – Tanga remains the only Tanzanian town where bicycle taxis operate – and the easy pace gives visitors the opportunity to explore at leisure. Directly off-shore from the city is the mangrove-ringed Toten Island with the ruins of a mosque dating back to at least the 17th century while the country’s largest and possibly most significant Swahili site is found in Tongoni, 20 km south of the city, with its extensive remains of a 15th century mosque and 40 tombs. 58

E X P L ORE TA N Z A NI A & Z A N Z IB A R 2 0 2 3-24

Also worth a visit is the Amboni Caves on the outskirts of town. This network of limestone tunnels was formed about 150 million years ago and has spiritual significance to locals with its largest chambers used as shrines to a fertility god. Tanga’s coastline also provides excellent diving opportunities with 100 km of protected waters in the Pemba Channel that contain some of the rarest marine life on earth, including the once-thought-extinct ‘living fossil’ the coelacanth. For beaches, most Tanga locals head to Raskazone, which is fringed by coconut palms and mangroves, but for the region’s best it’s worth taking an hour’s drive south to former dhow port Pangani for some gorgeous beaches and resorts as well as a step back into Swahili history.

Safari Continue south and you’ll find one of Tanzania’s newest and most unusual national parks. Saadani National Park distinguishes itself as the only coastal wildlife sanctuary of its kind on Africa’s east coast. There are options for boat safaris on the Wami River with plenty of hippos and crocs to spot while savannah plains are home

to buffalo, elephant, leopards and lions with the big cats even known to venture onto the beach. Saadani can be combined with time in Bagamoyo, just 44km south. Once one of the most important trading ports along the East African coast, it has – like Zanzibar Island – its own Stone Town of narrow streets and crumbling German colonial buildings. Perfect to explore on foot. Now the town is best known for its central role in preserving Tanzanian traditional arts and culture with Zawose Music Village the place to hear Wagogo music passed on through generations and played on unique handmade instruments. Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s bustling commercial capital, is a vibrant, welcoming city that fizzes with creative energy. It is a hotbed of ideas in food, fashion and music showcased at plenty of bars, restaurants and independent stores as well as regular events such as Swahili Fashion Week. It’s easy to escape Dar’s bustle for the breeze and blue seas of a beach break. Even here the city is developing fast with the popular, but scruffy sandy strip of Coco Beach now revamped with a string of excellent restaurants and night clubs that attract Dar’s cool crowd.

Paradise You can, of course, get a regular ferry service to beach-blessed island of Zanzibar (the crossing takes around 90 minutes), but just a few kilometres from the city, but a world away in atmosphere are the serene Bahari and Jangwani beaches to the north and Kipepo and Amani beach to the south. Amani means ‘peace’ in Kiswahili and that is just what you’ll find in these often-deserted paradises. Not many visitors venture further south along the coast from Dar during their stay, but they are rewarded with one of Tanzania’s most iridescent hidden gems. The Mtwara region has vast empty beaches such as at Mikindani Bay and some of the best snorkelling and scuba opportunities amid the pristine reefs of the Mnazi Bay Marine Park. Culture vultures will also appreciate the chance to see the world-famous woodcraft of the Makonde tribe with artisans creating dramatic masks and sculptures out of ebony wood. There are also fantastic safari options this far south with the Ruvuma River, which forms the boundary between Tanzania and Mozambique and is full of crocodiles and hippos.

]THE WESTERN & GREAT LAKES CIRCUIT

Launch your lake adventures

anzania’s share of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa and the second largest in the world, has plenty of attractions for intrepid travellers up for venturing beyond the standard tourist trail and for soaking up the local rhythms of life. Most visitors fly into Mwanza, Tanzania’s second-largest city, which is nestled attractively amid the rocky outcrops or kopjes that surround Lake Victoria’s southern shore. Among the ancient boulders is Bismarck’s Rock, a seemingly precariously balanced collection of massive rocks that has been here for millenia yet looks like it could tumble into the lake at any moment. It’s a wonderful spot to take in the honeyed sunsets justly renowned here and there is a surrounding park and restaurants to extend your stay. Also, nearby you’ll find the Kamanga Ferry Terminal, the launch point for a host of vessels that set out for the lake’s islands, one of which is now a protected national park. Just 10 minutes on the water

will get you to Saanane Island National Park. Tanzania’s smallest national park is necklaced with trails so is ideal for hiking, relaxing – the island’s beautiful beaches make for the perfect picnic – and wildlife spotting. It is the only place in Tanzania you’ll find the De Brazza’s monkey as well as impala, rock hyrax and a raft of reptiles.

Uninhabited Tanzania’s other island national park, Rubondo Island, is also reachable from Mwanza, but tucked away in the southwest corner it requires a drive to the village of Kasenda, where you can pick up the park boat. The island is an uninhabited paradise with 90 per cent of it covered in forest with handsome tamarind, palm trees and sycamore figs forming a dense canopy. Wild jasmine and numerous colourful orchid species grow here while populations of hippos, crocodiles, vervet monkeys, chimpanzees, black elephants and giraffes thrive here away from man’s influence. Deserted sandy

Lake Victoria facts ] Lake Victoria is also called by its original native name Lake Nyanza ] It lies mainly in Tanzania and Uganda but also borders Kenya ] It has 3,440 km of coastline and over 3,000 islands. ] The biggest island is Ukerewe, which has become a safe haven for Tanzanians living with albinism ] The lake has 200 species of fish, making it one of the world’s largest freshwater fisheries

beaches break up the forest and are a favourite drinking spot for bushbuck and the swamp-dwelling antelope the sitatunga. Yellow-spotted otters hunt for tilapia around the island’s rocky bays while keeping well away from the predatory Nile perch, which can reach 100 kg, bulked up by a diet that includes every other fish in Lake Victoria (even other Nile perch). Mwanza is a gateway to the Northern Circuit’s Serengeti-Lake Natron-Ngorongoro loop, but there are safari appetisers to be had a short drive south. You’ll see plenty of wildlife yet far fewer tourists at Kigosi National Park. One of Tanzania’s newest parks – it was established in 2019 – Kigosi occupies a vast system of wetlands, woodlands and plains. It’s a challenging terrain, but it can be explored by 4x4 outside of the wet seasons while the while the lakes and swamps are best enjoyed in shallow-draft inflatables and punt-style boats. Wildlife includes rare birds such as the shoebill stork and Africa’s largest population of pygmy geese with

plenty of big game such as lion, leopard and buffalo (lions here even hunt in the wetlands, chasing buffalo into shallow swamps to make their kill).

Wilderness You could also base yourself in Bukoba for your Lake Victoria adventure. There are scheduled flights to the city on the lake’s western shore and a stay here will open opportunities to visit the remote yet rewarding Burigi-Chato National Park. Stretching from Lake Victoria in the east to the Rwandan border in the west, this enormous chunk of wild country encompasses freshwater lakes, hills, rocky escarpments, forest-lined valleys, swamps, rivers, flood plains and vast expanses of savannah. ]ZANZIBAR AND THE ISLANDS he labyrinthine streets of Stone Town, the most historic part of Zanzibar City, are full of architectural wonders. Chief among them are the massive teak or mahogany doors with their distinctive brass studs. Just as the grandest of these doors opens to reveal sultans’ palaces and opulent former merchants’ homes, so a trip to Zanzibar opens up a world of wonders.

and culture. It is a feast for the senses with its vibrant, bustling markets, the scent of fresh island spices such as clove and cinnamon, the call to prayers echoing from the nearest mosque and tantalising cuisine from fine dining to the cavalcade of street food served fresh every evening at Forodhani Gardens.

Stone Town should not be missed. It has a dark past as one of the largest and last open slave ports in the Indian Ocean – it gets its name from the houses built with local stone by Arab traders and slavers – but today is a welcoming melting pot of traditions

The town is just steps from the gentle turquoise seas and white sand beaches that ring the island, making it the perfect beach break getaway. At Stone Town harbour you’ll find plenty of vessels to take you to nearby Prison Island, where you can visit a sanctuary for giant tortoises and snorkel on the corals.

Sanctuary

There is plenty more water-sports to be had around the island with jet-skiing, windsurfing, parasailing, kite-surfing and wake-boarding all available. You can also take to the water on a traditional dhow. Sail at sunset and it becomes a wonderfully romantic trip with the wind in your sails and a glass of wine in your hand. As many as 40 dhows go out at once early each morning at Nungwi on Zanzibar’s northernmost tip. The fishing village is also home to many dhow boat builders. It’s a fascinating art form to see up close.

The lush north of the island is also home to many spice farms – Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia and other smaller islands in the archipelago are known as the Spice Islands. Visitors get to taste and see the range of spices and fruits grown and exported the world over on organised tours.

Unspoilt Pemba is known for its cloves. Its Arabic name translates as “the green island” and a stay here is a chance to immerse yourself in nature and escape the crowds. Another unspoilt environment is Mafia Island. Much of its southern coastline and surrounding waters are a protected marine park with its many coral reefs home to wildlife such as whale sharks and sea turtles. November to April brings chances to swim with the whale sharks, which are gentle giants of the ocean, when they visit the local waters.
