Welcome to Tanzania

A WEALTH OF WONDERS

IN EVERY CORNER It gives me great pride and pleasure to welcome you to the fourth edition of Explore Tanzania. This edition of the publication looks beyond the country’s world-renowned attractions such as Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and the island paradise of Zanzibar to reveal a host of less well known, but just as memorable places to visit across all corners of Tanzania. You’ll find safari adventures where it is just you and the wealth of wildlife, tribes whose ways of life have remained unchanged for centuries, cascading waterfalls, serene, mountain framed lakes, lush forested hills and effervescent cities that are hives of culture and creativity. Trips to the Lake Zone – where the islands of Lake Victoria provide remote wildlife adventures and heart-stopping sunsets – or the Southern circuit – with Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park/Selous Game Reserve offering Big Five safari thrills without the human traffic – are worthy of holidays in their own right. They offer ideal second visits for those looking to explore the country further or can be linked with a Serengeti safari or beach escape for a longer stay. Our wealth of attractions and facilities means there is something here for every kind of traveller. As you’ll see inside the pages of Explore Tanzania we can cater for those who want adventure or peace and quiet, wildlife big and small and from flora to fauna and a cultural experience both traditional and modern. Our MICE facilities are growing all the time with large scale conference venues in Dar es Salaam and Arusha and a string of major hotels in our cities that offer state-of-the-art locations for meetings and events. Delegates get the added value of use of the surrounding attractions, such as safari trips and beach breaks, during their down time. Cruise tourism is also on the rise with regular ship calls to Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam proving popular spots for a stop-off as is Tanzania’s share of Lake Victoria. It’s never been easier to link these attractions into a trip of a lifetime with recent investments in infrastructure has improved connections by air, rail, road and water. Such a multi-faceted trip will give you a true flavour of the expansive experience to be had in our country. When and wherever you go you are sure to receive the warm welcome our country and people are famous for. Karibu Tanzania!

RADIATING COLOURS

AND LAYERS OF BEAUTY Tanzanite, the world-famous rare gemstone mined in the foothills of Kilimanjaro, radiates different colours and layers of beauty depending on where it is viewed from. Tanzania, the country where the trichroic gem is exclusively found, is similarly multifaceted, revealing new wonders from every vantage point whether its 5,895 m (19,340 ft) up on the Roof of Africa at Mt Kilimanjaro’s

peak or plunging into the depths of the Indian Ocean to explore pristine coral reefs bursting with marine life.

It is worth taking your time to savour the people and places in every corner of this amazing country.

We know the majority of visitors come to conquer Kilimanjaro, safari in the Serengeti or take a beach break on Zanzibar. It’s a trio of world-beating attractions any country would be proud to have within its borders. But, there is so much more here to encourage you to extend your stay or return soon. Summiting Kilimanjaro may be on most climbers’ bucket lists, but we also have Mt Meru, active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, and the Usambara Mountains to name just a few. Beyond Serengeti there are 21 other national parks in Tanzania, many with Big Five sightings potential, including nature’s own Jurassic Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, and the remote but worth seeking out Katavi National Park. Beaches of sugar-fine sand and crystalline waters are not just the preserve of Zanzibar, they fill the Indian Ocean coast along with plenty more island escapes such as Pemba and Mafia Island.

There is something here for every kind of traveller. There is the potential for an active adventure holiday or a peaceful, exotic escape or to combine the two. If your idea of a beach break is packed with water-sports and lively bars then Zanzibar or the resorts north of Dar are for you, but at unspoilt Matema Beach it will be just you, the shimmering waters of Lake Nyasa and the looming Livingstone Mountains.

ATTRACTIONS Within the pages of Explore Tanzania, we invite you to come with us as we reveal the breadth of attractions and adventures this country offers. Just as any good guide will advise novice climbers taking on Mt Kilimanjaro to progress “pole, pole” (slowly, slowly) so

DIVERSE CULTURE In addition to its breathtaking beauty and vast array of wildlife, Tanzania is one of the culturally diverse countries in the world with 120 tribes and distinct ethnic groups. Some of them, such as hunter-gatherers the Hadzabe and the pastoralist Maasai retain their centuries-old ways of life, which it is possible to experience on organised tours. It’s a fascinating insight into ancient cultures and brings a new appreciation of the land that they worship and depend on. An important part of the life of the disparate tribal cultures in Tanzania is art and music. Visitors will find Makonde carvings and pottery, the handwoven fabric khanga and kitenge, Maasai beadwork among a host of traditional handicrafts. More modern art movements such as the Tinga Tinga paintings

Modern music movement Bongo Flava may be a uniquely African take on hip-hop, but it also draws on the traditional sounds of taarab and dansi, which you can still hear in their authentic forms in concerts throughout the country.

ECOTOURISM Tanzania tourism has sought to support rather than intrude on traditional ways of life and have a similarly light footprint when it comes to the environment. The plastic carrier bag ban introduced by the country’s government in 2019 recognises a global problem that sullies its land and oceans. It’s a move ecotourists will welcome and they have plenty to bring them to Tanzania from conservation projects such as the chim-

panzee-protecting The Jane Goodall Institute in Gombe National Park and the whale shark research on Mafia Island, which they can visit or intern with. The majority of lodges and camps within Tanzania’s national parks try to merge with nature and are sustainably run with features such as solar power for electricity and deep water well pumps. Tanzania is also emerging as an African leader in the rapidly growing meetings, conferences and events industry. It has the 1,000 person capacity Julius Nyerere Convention Centre, in Dar es Salaam, and the even bigger Arusha International Conference Centre to host large-scale events as well as a host of excellent MICE hotels in both cities. The appeal to delegates – with downtime options of sun, sand and safaris – is obvious. Read on to find out more about how this country is renowned for its world-leading triptych of natural wonders, but like its seams of Tanzanite, so many hidden gems as well.

with their brilliant and highly saturated colours have also become popular and the country has a new generation of talented artists producing innovative work, such as the upcycled sculptures of the Chuma Workshop in Dar and Chako on Zanzibar.

Daniel Msirikale

CAPTURING TANZANIA’S

HIDDEN TREASURES With a focus on Tanzania’s less explored landscapes, the work of award-winning travel photographer Daniel Msirikale documents the breadth of beauty in the country and the endless opportunities for adventure here. If there is one person who knows the rewards to be had if you take the time to Explore Tanzania it is travel, lifestyle and documentary photographer Daniel Msirikale. The 28-year-old photographer has carved an enviable career and lifestyle uncovering new beauty spots in his homeland and capturing them in unforgettable fashion. His latest award came just late last year when he became the first Tanzanian to win the Safal Eye in the Wild competition. Hills earned him the US$ 3,000 top prize and showcased the beauty of the Southern Highlands, which despite its lush, lake-filled landscapes is on few tourists’ travel radars.

LANDSCAPES With a focus on Tanzania’s less explored landscapes, Daniel seeks for his photography to inspire tourists and Tanzanians to explore the breadth of beauty the country holds. Daniel says: “Initially I used to uncover these places so my friends and I could have a

quieter and often cheaper alternative for us to spend our holidays. “When photography became my career, however, I realised that it was images of places off the beaten track that were catching people’s attention the most. I now feel that I have a responsibility to uncover and share images of these places. “There’s also a certain rush that comes only with uncovering such off-the-grid places. To find out about them I search through hashtags of different places on Instagram to see if I can find any images of unique spots

in an area. I also ask the locals of an area on what unique spots I can find.

Daniel’s top 5 hidden treasures

“I get help from tour operators, cultural centres and local guides. Nowadays I also get a lot of recommendations from various people on my Instagram page and invitations from time to time.” As to Daniel’s favourite recent discoveries, he has become bewitched with the dramatic landscape of the southwest of Tanzania. He says: “My favourite recent discoveries were in Mbeya region. The first were these magnificent falls at Suma Malamba village, about 15 km from Tukuyu town. I also discovered a number of unique crater lakes in the Tukuyu district – Kiungululu, Kingili, Ilamba, Ikapu and Kisiba lakes. Lastly, the MpangaKipengere Game Reserve, which is relatively new. This place has such a rich history and is just incredible for walking safaris, camping, birdwatching and has probably the most unique falls in Tanzania: the Kimani Falls.” Daniel’s body of work represents a beautiful document of the abundance of attractions in Tanzania. He is always looking for the next hidden gem to reveal and you can keep up with his adventures at his Instagram site @that_tanzanianguy. In the meantime, you can check out some of his incredible work here. We hope it inspires you to put together your own Tanzanian adventure.

KITULO NATIONAL PARK Kitulo National Park is the place I’ve most heard the phrase “I can’t believe this is Tanzania”. With over 350 species of wild flowers, including over 40 terrestrial orchid varieties, this breathtaking plateau has been called Bustani ya Mungu, which translates to The Garden of God. MPANGA KIPENGERE GAME RESERVE Located in the northern end of the Kipengere Range (Livingstone mountain range), this place, to me, has one of the most unique waterfalls in Tanzania, Kimani waterfalls. On top of that Kipengere is great for camping, walking safaris, bird watching and, on a cloudless night, stargazing. MATEMA BEACH – LAKE NYASA When I think of a place where I have been truly at peace and disconnected from everything else, Matema Beach is what comes to mind. It is my absolute favourite place in Tanzania and the one place I wanted to keep to myself and share it with the world at the same time.

KISIBA/MASOKO CRATER LAKE Kisiba lake is surrounded by dense natural growing vegetation and a clear view of beautiful mountain ranges in the distance. Whether on a cloudy day or clear skies, the tranquil waters of Kisiba Lake are truly a sight to behold. KAPOLOGWE FALLS Kapologwe falls lies on one of the tributaries of the Kiwira river that flows all the way into Lake Nyasa. As you make your way to the falls from above the only clue they are there is the sound of the cascade plunging down to the pool below. A short hike down reveals these magnificent falls and a large cave right behind them. It’s a great place to swim, hike or simply relax and marvel at the surroundings. (BONUS GEM) KIKULETWA / CHEMKA HOT SPRINGS My top five is severely biased toward the Southern Highland gems thus it’s only right to add this true definition of a hidden gem: Kikuletwa Hot Springs. A dry and dusty landscape gives way to fig and palm trees, which conceal this oasis. Its crystal clear turquoise blue waters are also home to the garra rufa fish that will exfoliate and revitalize your feet if you stay still enough for them to work their magic.

THRILLS AND CHILLS Thrills…

Whether you want peace or a piece of the action, Tanzania is the place to go. Check out our list of attractions for those who want thrills and those who prefer to chill. K_Boonnitrod / Shutterstock.com

BIKE RIDING Jumping on a mountain bike can add a new level of immersion and adventure to a safari or a city tour. The two-wheeled Dar Reality Tour, run by adventure company Afri Roots (afriroots.co.tz), certainly opens up a new side to the city as well as a way to beat the traffic. One Bike, a community-driven cycle tour company in Moshi, offers a range of trips to neighbouring villages as well as longer adventures into the foothills of Kilimanjaro. If you prefer to go it alone you’ll find mountain bike trails in Ngaramtoni Hills, Mount Meru Forest Reserve, Kisongo and the Monduli forest.

WINDSURFING Zanzibar is a wonderfully exotic location for a windsurfing break and the archipelago’s protective reef about a kilometre offshore ensures the tidal lagoon is the perfect playground for beginners, but also for experienced kite-surfers who are able to enjoy massive downwind runs.

RUNNING Tanzania hosts one of the running calendar’s most singular and sought-after events, the Kilimanjaro Marathon. Each March thousands of runners, including some very fast local talent, set off from Moshi in the moun-

tain’s foothills. It’s a true bucket-list adventure with wonderful views of the Roof of Africa as you taken on the challenging course. Sign up online at kilimanjaromarathon.com

DIVING Tanzania is one of the world’s premier diving destinations with healthy coral reefs and crystal clear bath temperature waters that teem with an aquarium’s worth of marine life. Top sites include Mafia Island and Zanzibar’s Mnemba Atoll for whale shark sightings, Pemba Island for hammerhead sharks and freshwater scuba and snorkelling in Lake Tanganyika, which has a visibility of more than 20 metres.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBING Of course, at 5,894 metres (19,340 feet) Kilimanjaro is the daddy of all African mountains, attracting around 50,000 hikers a year. Despite its altitude there are more challenging climbs to be had in Tanzania with the reward of even more spectacular views and far fewer fellow climbers. Reaching the top of active volcano Ol Donyo Lengai will test even the most experienced but the route passes through some fantastic scenery with panoramic views of the Rift Valley. Other mountains include Mt Hanang, Longido, the Usambara Mountains, Mt Lemagrut, Mt Lolmalasin, Mt Oldeani, and the Uluguru Mountains.

QUAD BIKES An increasingly popular and exciting way to explore Tanzania is by zooming around on

Chills… a quad bike. Obviously they are not an animal safari choice, but in the desert-like surrounds of Lake Eyasi and the more remote beaches of Zanzibar they are a thrilling option. Check out 4wheelingtz.com and coolquadszanzibar.com for tours.

WALKING SAFARIS Forego the 4x4 and strike out on foot and your senses sharpen to the rolling terrain that gently reveals its secrets with the thrill of crossing paths with animals large and small. Of course, the more remote and safari vehicle-shy of the national parks such as Katavi and Tarangire lend themselves to walking safaris, but there is also a number of wilderness zones in the Serengeti where game driving vehicles are banned. The quieter east side of the Ruaha National Park is also ideal with elephant feeding along the river banks and sable, greater and lesser kudu, roan, waterbuck in plain sight.

HOT-AIR BALLOONING A Serengeti balloon safari is a once-in-alifetime experience. Taking off as the sun begins to rose over the kopjes, you will soar to 1,000 ft for magnificent views of the plains and then come down to tree-top height for unique views of the wildlife below. The balloons are equipped with ‘whisper’ burners to minimise the noise of navigating, but for the majority of the journey the balloon coasts at wind speed in silence for bird’s eye game viewing.

Not everyone likes to live on adrenaline so here are some havens of tranquillity in Tanzania. Channel your inner Robinson Crusoe at Fanjove Island Beach If you are seriously in need of some ‘me’ time, this private island about 140 km south of Dar es Salaam is about as remote and secluded as you can get. There are just six eco-friendly bandas (tented rooms) with a maximum of 12 guests at any time to enjoy the rich wildlife, including year-round dolphins.

Tanzania’s attractions

TOP 10 REASONS YOU HAVE TO

COME TO TANZANIA

There’s never been a better time to visit Tanzania. Here are 10 reasons why the country should be in your travel plans.

1. It has a thriving cultural

scene

Music resounds throughout Tanzania. A trip to the capital, Dar es Salaam, will immerse you in the sounds of hip-hop offshoot Bongo Flava or the manic 300 BPM dance

floor energy of singeli that soundtrack the streets. Outside of the capital, the country’s musical traditions have been kept alive. On Zanzibar the string-based taarab, brought to the island in the 1880s from the Middle East to entertain the Sultan of Oman, thrives with the Dhow Countries Music Academy supporting a new generation of musicians and providing a venue for regular concerts. Bagamoyo, a couple of hours’ drive from Dar, has become the adopted home for the Zawose family, the progeny of internationally renowned Wagogo musician Hukwe Zawose. The clan keep alive his music and the skills to make the singular instruments – such as ilimba (thumb piano) and iseze (a stringed instrument) – that are such a integral part of the Gogo music sound. Regular music and dance concerts can be seen at the Bagamoyo Festival of Arts and Culture.

Dave Primov / Shutterstock.com

As for art scene, it stretches from prehistory with the rock paintings in Kondoa through the ubiquitous Tinga Tinga paintings that capture Tanzanian life in all its vibrant colour to the envelope-pushing modern art produced at Dar creative hub Nafasi Arts Space.

16

Nafasi has also supported the skills of awardwinning fashion designer Makeke, whose shows are an unforgettable fusion of theatre and the catwalk. Both Dar and Zanzibar host annual fashion shows and the island’s Stone Town is also home to lauded designer Farouque Abdela, who made his name in London with a number of royals among his A-list clients, but now champions the archipelago’s textile traditions.

2. It’s easier than ever to get

around the country

With incredible sights sprinkled across the country, it’s just as well that it has never been easier to travel within Tanzania. The tenure of President John Joseph Pombe Magufuli has seen huge investment in the country’s transport infrastructure with the revival of the national air carrier, Air Tanzania, joining domestic airlines Precision Air, Coastal Aviation and others in connecting the country. Tanzania’s transnational railway is also being modernised with East Africa’s first 160 km/h train. A 300 km section linking Dar es Salaam to Morogoro is already offering three times daily round trips and the line will soon link the commercial capital with Mwanza on the shores of Lake Victoria. More sedate rail travel is also to be had on the Tazara Railway that connects Dar to the southern highlands before heading into Zambia. Its slow progress gives plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife from your window as it passes through the Selous Game Reserve with its elephants, rhinos, hippos, lions, giraffes, zebras and more. Huge road projects are also in the pipeline, including a coastal highway linking Tanzania with its northern neighbour, Kenya.

3. More National Parks than

ever to choose from

Tanzania is justly renowned for its national parks, which are home to a cornucopia of

indigenous wildlife, the Big Five among them. Serengeti, which was named the Best National Park in Africa for 2019, grabs the headlines but there are now 21 other national parks in the country after five game reserves were upgraded in 2019. Tanzania is second only to South Africa on the continent with 21 national parks within its borders. The five new additions are Biharamuro, Kimisi, Ibanda and Rumanyika and BurigiChato. The latter is home to the statuesque common eland, one of the largest antelopes in the world.

4. It has the Serengeti and

the ‘Serengeti of Flowers’

6. You’ll find lakes from

The Serengeti may have the highest concentration of wild animals on the planet, but if your safari tastes run to flora more than fauna, there is the Kitulo Plateau, known as the ‘Serengeti of Flowers’. During the rainy season from late November to April this eminently hikeable and protected area of grassland and forest amid the rugged peaks of the southern highlands erupts into a dazzling wildflower display bursting with the colourful orchids, lobelias, and lilies that thrive in the fertile volcanic soil.

Tanzania is home to a rich variety of lakes, including half of Africa’s largest body of water, Lake Victoria, as well as the continent’s deepest, Lake Tanganyika. You can also enjoy a secluded beach break at Matema Beach, which fringes the serene blue waters of Lake Nyasa, while the salt and soda lake is famous for its red alkaline layer, its otherworldly beauty and the flamingos that feast in it.

5. It has the ‘Eighth Wonder

of the World’

Volcanologists will tell you the Ngorongoro Crater is a caldera, not a crater, but what will matter to visitors is this hollow created 2.5 million years ago by a collapsed volcano presents a natural amphitheatre to observe a wondrous array of animal life, including elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, that can reliably be seen in huge numbers feeding at its many water sources. The backdrop of the crater walls makes for some stunning photographic opportunities.

7. It’s a foodies’heaven Dishes here are an aromatic delight, infused with cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper from the ‘spice island’ of Zanzibar. You can also follow your nose to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee in cafes and on most street corners. The beans – prized the world over – will be sourced from plantations in Kilimanjaro and the Southern Highlands, which coffee connoisseurs can visit on organised tours. These fertile foothills also produce the country’s bountiful fruit and legumes. Eating fresh and healthy food here is easy whether its grabbing a fresh coconut from a street seller, who will slice the top

10. A chance to meet the

tribes of Tanzania

Tanzania has more than 120 tribes who co-exist peacefully while being free to continue their own distinct ways of life. Such a mix of unity and diversity was always key to the governance of the country’s first president Julius Nyerere. The tribes may all be linked by the lingua franca of Swahili, but their individuality is fascinating to explore. You can join hunter gatherers the Hadzabe around Lake Eyasi as they forage for honey and fruit or hunt with their bows and poisontipped arrows; attend a celebration with the musical Sonyo people of northern Tanzania or stay at a Maasai boma and experience their unique skills from tracking through dancing to hair-braiding.

The Northern Safari Circuit

ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST AMAZING

WILDLIFE SPECTACLES Tanzania has more wild animals per square kilometre than any other country in Africa and it’s the unforgettable landscape of the Northern Circuit that offers some of the world’s most diverse wildlife experiences. The endless plains of the Serengeti on one side and the Ngorongoro Lengai Geopark (which includes the crater) on the other side are of outstanding universal value and full of wildlife and amazing scenery. One of the sought-after attractions in the Tanzania Northern Safari is the Annual Great Animal Migration and regarded as one of the seven wonders of the modern world, in which millions of wildebeest and thousands of other wildlife, including zebras – followed by their predators – move in search of pasture and water between Serengeti National Park and the Masai Mara in Kenya. It’s a journey fraught with danger with lions, leopards and hyenas lying in wait to thin out the herd and there are crocodiles lurking in rivers en-route. From June to October, when the crossing of the Serengeti begins in earnest, visitors get a chance for a close-up view of this magnificent spectacle. The natural amphitheatre formed by the extinct volcano at Ngorongoro is a similarly bountiful game viewing environment with an abundance of animals, including the Big Five – buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino – gathering around its watering holes. These prime animal attractions mean the circuit has become increasingly busy, but it is still

32

possible to escape the crowds and find a quiet corner if you know where to go among the circuit’s national parks, game reserves, conservation areas and private concessions. There are even small sections of the Serengeti that are out of bounds to motor vehicles, allowing walking safaris. Tarangire National Park Lake Manyara National Park live in the shadow of their more well-known neighbours but both offer superb game viewing away from the crowds. Aside from the animals, the Northern Circuit also allows the chance to experience ancient, largely unchanged human civilisations such as the pastoralist Maasai and Samburu tribes as well as the Hadzabe that hunt and forage around Eyasi and the Southern reaches. It’s possible to go back even further earliest evidence of the existence of our human ancestors at the Olduvai Gorge, where hundreds of fossilized bones and stone tools in the area dating back millions of years. For visitors up for a challenge, there are a range of testing mountainous peaks. Chief among them is, if course, Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Getting to the top will take at least five days of pole, pole (slowly, slowly) progress with experienced guides to its 5, 895 m (19340 ft) summit. Climbers can acclimatise to the altitude and hone their skills on nearby challenging peaks such as Mount Meru and active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai (‘Mountain of God’ in the Maa language).

Serengeti facts

Ngorongoro Crater

Rivertrees Country Inn

ELEGANCE IN A CALM AND

BEAUTIFUL SETTING Rivertrees began as a beautiful coffee plantation before being converted into a B&B, gradually evolving to several Garden Rooms, plush River Cottages, the elegant River House and the original Farm House. Guests are spoilt for choice by this charming group of lodgings, with each accommodation in its own peaceful spot within 10 acres of grounds. The restaurant looks over lush green lawns and serves delicious country cuisine made up of garden-fresh ingredients and old family recipes. Guests can relax and rejuvenate in

the swimming pool and the outdoor massage banda, while the surrounding tall trees and birdlife engender an ambience of calm. Arusha National Park, Mount Meru and Lake Duluti are all within easy reach and activities include cycling and walking in the surrounding area. Just 40 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport and an hour from Arusha, Rivertrees is a gateway to the natural wonders of Northern Tanzania as well as a beautiful destination in its own right.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

WORLD RENOWNED PROTECTED AREA

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a multiple-land use area, where wildlife co-exists with the Maasai – pastoralists who have managed to preserve their culture over hundreds of years. The NCA was established as an experiment to perform three main activities: pastoralism, conservation and tourism. The multiple land use policy has made the NCA a unique protected area in Africa. The natural and cultural endowment account for the reasons UNESCO accorded in 1979 the Area the status of a World Heritage Site, and in 1981 an International Biosphere Reserve.

In 2010, UNESCO inscribed Ngorongoro Conservation Area as a property in the list of the Mixed World Heritage Sites. NCA, Mount Kilimanjaro and Serengeti National Park made Tanzania the capital of Africa’s New Seven Natural Wonders. Ngorongoro has another UNESCO recognition, gained in 2018: it is part of a large geographical area in Northern Tanzania recognised as Ngorongoro-Lengai UNESCO Global Geopark. Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact and unfilled volcanic caldera, and

explore

is the NCA’s flagship tourism attraction. Empakaai Crater may not be as famous, but many travellers consider it to be its match in beauty. Empakaai is about 8 km in diameter. Olmoti Crater is located to the north of Ngorongoro Crater and south of Empakaai Crater. North of Olduvai Gorge on the plains is a spectacular moving ash dune, famously known as Shifting Sands. Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek. Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek are close to the border with Serengeti National Park on the western side of the NCA.

The Retreat at Ngorongoro

METICULOUS BIRD-THEMED

LODGE

The Retreat at Ngorongoro is a meticulously bird-themed lodge set within 30 acres of land with clear emphasis on nature and the birdlife in the area. The property wanted to showcase Africa’s beauty and bounty – areas not always shown to the world and embarked on stage one: to bring “life” to this place with a serious tree-planting project that would also serve to off-set The Retreat’s carbon footprint. Planting over 40,000 indigenous trees, wasn’t an easy task, often losing many saplings to elephants trampling as well as shortage of water in the area, but The Retreat persisted, replanted; bought water for watering the trees during the dry seasons…. and success followed. It brought in numerous bird species – hence the birdthemed concept of the lodge.

The Southern Safari Circuit

HEAD SOUTH FOR SOLO

SAFARI ADVENTURES Tanzania’s southern circuit is popular with visitors who are after a safari adventure free of the crowds that throng the Serengeti and the north’s other headline-grabbing attractions. Yours will frequently be the only vehicle on the landscape offering a chance to take your time in communing with the environment, its wildlife and some of the most unusual and less-visited sights in Tanzania.

you’ll find probably the largest population of lion on the continent as well as leopard, spotted hyena, elephant and wild dog.

Nowhere is that sense of getting off the beaten track to areas that feel more remote more apparent than the fathomless wilderness of Selous Game Reserve. Its original 50,000 square kilometres are a Unesco World Heritage Site and include five lakes and the Rufiji river. This gives the unique opportunity to enjoy boating safaris, in which you can get close to crocodiles, hippos and many of the reserve’s 440 bird species, in addition to walking safaris and game drives. Here

So there is plenty of room to roam in Ruaha National Park, the largest of its kind in East Africa. An estimated 12,000 elephants migrate through the greater Ruaha ecosystem – which includes Rungwa Game Reserve and Usangu Game Reserve. They may not have quite the same density of wildlife as elsewhere but they do have the diversity and working harder for your sightings means the reward feels much greater.

Part of Selous Game Reserve was upgraded in 2019 by the Tanzanian President to be a National Park (Nyerere National Park), occupying an area of 30,000 sq km – making it the nation’s second largest national park, after Ruaha National Park.

There’s wildlife diversity too in Mikumi National Park. This tract of wilderness that has drawn comparisons to the Serengeti plains has the potential for Big Five sightings and is just 280 km west of Dar es Salaam so is a great choice for a safari break from the city. Beyond the wildlife, the Southern Circuit encompasses a huge variety of terrain. From the forest-swathed peaks of Udzungwa Mountains National Park through the meadows of wildflowers in Kitulo National Park and the wetlands of the Kilombero Valley to the crystalline waters of Lake Nyasa there is something to appeal to every nature lover.

50

Selous Game Reserve

OLDEST: Selous (pronounced ‘seloo’) Game Reserve It’s the oldest wildlife reserve in Africa and was named after British explorer Frederick Courteney Selous.

GIRAFFES: The giraffe population here has become so large that the reserve has earned the nickname: “Giraffic Park.” SIZE: Now reduced from 50,000 sq km to only 19,000 sq km.

The Coastal Circuit

A PERFECT BLEND OF

CITY, SEA AND SAFARI Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s bustling commercial capital, has in the past detained few tourists beyond a quick stopover before transfers to the country’s beach or bush attractions. However, those who hang around will be find a teeming, but welcoming city that fizzes with creative energy and has much to interest culture vultures and beach lovers alike. Visitors can explore the city’s past as the headquarters of most liberation movements from southern Africa, attracting the soon-to-be iconic revolutionaries Malcolm X and Che Guevara within a few months of each other in the mid 1960s. Other culturally significant sites include the National Museum and House of Culture, shaded within the city’s Botanical Gardens, where displays include fossils found at Olduvai Gorge that trace the beginnings of man as well as an assortment of traditional crafts, musical instruments and tribal dress. More tribal customs can be explored at The Village Museum where 16 ethnic huts have been recreated to educate Tanzania and the world about the country’s tribal diversity. From here you can also follow the road north out of the city to Bagamoyo. It’s about a 90-minute drive to this most culturally diverse of Tanzanian cities with ethnic groups including the Wakwere, Wazaramo and Wazigua as well as people of Arab descent. The Unesco World Heritage Site, once one of the most important trading posts on the East African coast, has its own Stone Town with its narrow streets and crumbling German colonial buildings. Perfect to explore on foot.

It’s easy to escape Dar’s bustle for the breeze and blue seas of a beach break. The city itself has some nice stretches of sand, including Coco Beach, in Oyster Bay, where you can enjoy delicious mihogo (cassava) and mishkaki (grilled meat skewers) by a host of beachside vendors. It’s a popular spot for locals, especially at weekends when there can be live music for a free entry beach party. Calmer and cooler is Mbalemwezi beach on the peninsula, which is a wonderful sundowner spot. You can, of course, get a regular ferry service to beach-blessed island of Zanzibar (the crossing takes around 90 minutes), but just a few kilometres from the city, but a world away in atmosphere are the serene Bahari and Jangwani beaches to the north and Kipepo and Amani beach to the south. Amani means ‘peace’ in Kiswahili and that is just what you’ll find in these often-deserted paradises.

Coastal Circuit facts BEACHES: Some of Africa’s finest beaches lapped by the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean

DAR ES SALAAM: Explore Tanzania’s bustling commercial capital and biggest seaport BAGAMOYO: Once the capital of German East Africa and an ancient trading port

Safari adventures are also in reach from Dar. In fact, you can access one that couples the wildlife with a beach break. Saadani National Park, which is just 100 km (60 miles) north of the city, is the only wildlife sanctuary to boast an Indian Ocean beachfront. Here sunbathers can see elephants strolling past them on the beach or lions splashing in the waves. Inland game drives can reveal giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest, leopard, lion and hyena while a boat trip on the mangrove-line Wami River promises encounters with hippo, crocodile and plenty of riverine birds.

INTERNATIONAL QUALITY,

SAFETY AND PATIENT CARE The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam attained Gold Standard re-accreditation of Joint Commission International (JCI) USA and remains the first and only hospital in Tanzania to have achieved this remarkable symbol of quality, safety and patient centred care. It is a matter of immense pride and happiness that a Tanzanian institution was able to achieve this unique distinction. Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania operates an integrated healthcare system across Tanzania and has been engaged in providing quality health care for over 90

years. Partnering with the government in serving the people of Tanzania, AKHST has strived to uplift health care through quality services and through human capacity development. In 2016, history was made when the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam became the first and only hospital in Tanzania to achieve the Gold seal. During the recertification process, the Hospital was evaluated by international surveyors against more than thousand measurable elements covering all aspects of healthcare delivery that included, efficiency of procedures, appropriateness of documentation, patient engagement and education, infection control, medication management, control standards of physician practice, safety and maintenance facilities comprising equipment and disaster preparedness. The four-day, in-depth, audit in the second week of July was an educational process that reconfirmed the quality standards of the Hospital culminating in an historic moment with the surveyors confirming re-accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI) USA.

ment process and the leadership oversight geared towards safe patient care. This re-accreditation is a clear demonstration of joint effort, inclination and commitment proven by both staff and management for an outstanding goal to withstand an international quality standard, safety and patient centred care at home. The journey towards achieving internationally approved quality standards is one of mixed emotions ranging from anxiety, humility and excitement – a continuous process that is aimed at ensuring that the people of Tanzania and East Africa receive better-patient centred care through modern facilities and processes.

Great Lakes

LAUNCH YOUR

LAKE ADVENTURES Tanzania’s share of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa and the second largest in the world, has plenty of attractions for intrepid travellers up for venturing beyond the standard tourist trail and for soaking up the local rhythms of life. Most visitors fly in to Mwanza, Tanzania’s second-largest city, which is set on Lake Victoria’s shore and ringed with green hills strewn with enormous boulders, including the precariously balanced Bismarck’s Rock – to take in the honeyed sunsets over the lake here. The port city’s trade links with neighbouring Uganda and Kenya have seen it rapidly expand, but despite the skyscrapers that have shot up the city retains a relaxed appeal. In the centre of town are colonial buildings such as the hilltop Dr Robert Koch’s House while the city’s Indian influence can be seen in the many mosques and Hindu temples. Head for the shopfilled Makorobi area for some retail therapy.

The city’s Kamanga Ferry Terminal is the launch point for a host of vessels that set out for the lake’s remote islands and national parks. Just 10 minutes on the water will get you to Saanane Island National Park. It’s Tanzania smallest national park and also distinguishes itself as the only place you’ll find De Brazza’s monkey as well as impala, rock hyrax and a raft of reptiles. You can also reach the lake’s largest island, Ukerewe, which has become a haven for Tanzanians living with albinism. The remote refuge is gorgeously unspoilt and visitors can explore by bicycle or kayak and immerse themselves in cultures blissfully unaware of life beyond the shores.

Lake Victoria facts

NAME: Lake Victoria is also called by its original native name Lake Nyanza

LOCATION: It lies mainly in Tanzania and Uganda but also borders on Kenya SIZE: Among the freshwater lakes of

the world it is second in size only to Lake Superior in North America.

Sequestered in the lake’s southwest reaches are the forests of Rubondo Island National Park, which provides a home for wildlife such as elephants, giraffes and hippos as well as a host of marine birds, including huge numbers of fish eagles and African grey parrots. The island also has many beautiful beaches to enjoy. The laidback wildlife adventures available here are the perfect safari appetiser for a SerengetiLake Natron-Ngorongoro loop, which can be launched from Mwanza. The other waterside towns of Musuma and Bukoma have a tranquil charm of their own and a chance to experience deeply rural Tanzania.

Nomad Tanzania

A REPUTATION FOR QUALITY AND EXPERIENCE

Nomad Tanzania is one of East Africa’s original safari companies. Over the years the company has built a reputation for quality, and for doing things properly and of which it is proud. For the past 20 years Nomad has owned and operated outstanding safari camps in three of Tanzania’s remotest corners. The camps were the pioneers in parts of the country few people had heard of at the time, and fewer still had visited. Since those early days, Nomad had an enduring obsession with Tanzania’s wild places and a promise remains giving guests a truly original and exhilarating safari experience.

While Nomad’s camps are a great source of pride, the company’s motivation goes far deeper than simply providing places to stay. The world is now living through what biologists are calling The Sixth Great Extinction, an absolutely critical era for the globe’s flora and fauna. Year by year, Nomad is intensifying its efforts to protect wild Tanzania from harm, and so far, the nation is holding strong. Nomad firmly believes that tourism practiced properly is a driving force in conservation and this belief has dominated the company’s business practice from the beginning.

explore

It runs through every arm of the company: in where it ventures, in what it does there, how it hires and empowers staff and how it approaches and works alongside local communities and conservation projects. Nomad also firmly believes in the power of business to empower people in Africa. When guests come on safari with Nomad, they are already supporting these efforts, and those of many other conservationists across Tanzania’s most fragile ecosystems. If Nomad can make people incredibly happy and keep the natural world safe – then it has found its place in the wilderness.

Zanzibar and The Islands

STONETOWN, SPICES AND SEAFARIS

WELCOME TO ZANZIBAR

The labyrinthine streets of Stone Town, the most historic part of Zanzibar City, are full of architectural wonders. Chief among them are the massive teak or mahogany doors with their distinctive brass studs. Just as the grandest of these doors opens to reveal sultans’ palaces and opulent former merchants’ homes, so a trip to Zanzibar opens up a world of wonders. Stone Town should not be missed. It has a dark past as one of the largest and last open slave ports in the Indian Ocean – it gets its name from the houses built with local stone by Arab traders and slavers – but today is a welcoming melting pot of traditions and culture. It is a feast for the senses with its vibrant, bustling markets, the scent of fresh island spices such as clove and cinnamon, the call to prayers echoing from the nearest mosque and tantalising cuisine from fine dining to the cavalcade of street food served fresh every evening at Forodhani Gardens. The town is just steps from the gentle turquoise seas and white sand beaches that ring the island, making it the perfect beach break getaway. At Stone Town harbour you’ll find plenty of vessels to take you to nearby Prison Island, where you can visit a sanctuary for giant tortoises and snorkel on the corals. There is plenty more water-sports to be had around the island with jet-skiing, windsurfing, parasailing, kite-surfing and wake-boarding all available.

You can also take to the water on a traditional dhow. Sail at sunset and it becomes a wonderfully romantic trip with the wind in your sails and a glass of wine in your hand. As many as 40 dhows go out at once early each morning at Nungwi on Zanzibar’s northernmost tip. The fishing village is also home to many dhow boat builders. It’s a fascinating art form to see up close. The lush north of the island is also home to many spice farms – Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia and other smaller islands in the archipelago are known as the Spice Islands. Visitors get to taste and see the range of spices and fruits grown and exported the world over on organised tours. Pemba is known for its cloves. Its Arabic name translates as “the green island” and a stay here is a chance to immerse yourself in nature and escape the crowds. Another unspoilt environment is Mafia Island. Much of its southern coastline and surrounding waters are a protected marine park with its many coral reefs home to wildlife such as whale sharks and sea turtles. November to April brings chances to swim with the whale sharks, which are gentle giants of the ocean, when they visit the local waters.

The Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors (ZATI)

The Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors (ZATI) has been operating successful since 2003 as a private sector tourism organisation. It was established to represent the needs and interests of tourism investors in Zanzibar. The aim of ZATI is to ensure a sustainable, responsible and professional tourism industry of the highest standard, working with government institutions and other relevant stakeholders. ZATI comprises 100 members from all areas of the tourism sector.
