Groups fight to keep paths open

Following the recent departure of the Sisters of Charity from their house on Filwood Broadway – a local missional group is set to move in this year. Lee Abbey Small Missional Communities – which has been based in Lisburn Road, Knowle West, since 1992 - has successfully applied to Bristol City Council to change the house’s use from a convent. This will allow male members of the Christian community to live there. Community member Ed Palairet said: “This move will enable the younger community to expand in numbers, while continuing to resource the local churches and help out in local community activities…” To find out more about the Lee Abbey community or how to join visit www.leeabbey.org.uk/smc

Support group for families A support group for families whose children have been groomed by sex offenders online has been started in Knowle West. Mum Joanne Manning started the group with the support of Avon and Somerset Constabulary. She says after her daughter was groomed at the age of 13, the family had to go through a court case – and received no help afterwards. She explains: “We were devastated as a family and we had no-one to talk to at all…I want to make sure other families in the area who have gone through the same thing have someone to talk to who understands.” The Constabulary’s Neighbourhood Manager Inspector Nigel Colston says “(The family) now want to do something positive by highlighting the risks to parents and children alike and potentially setting up a local support group to help parents in Filwood who might be going through the same things…” To find out more contact Joanne at joannemanning7@yahoo.co.uk

Community groups fighting to stop the closure of two footpaths as part of new developments in the area have now been told access will remain. The Northern Slopes Initiative (NSI) and Marksbury Area Community Association wrote to Bristol City Council and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) expressing their concern. They feared the closure of both footpaths between Kingswear Road and Lynton and Timsbury Roads for six months would affect people going to “Bedminster, schools and other facilities.” The Council has now said “access will be maintained” during work by construction company Kier. A Council spokesperson said: “…Kier also plans to construct an alternative path to Torpoint Road in January, to ensure that the public do not have to take a long diversion during the closure. We are also in talks with HCA regarding temporarily reopening access through their old Marksbury Road College site…” Full story www.knowlewest.org.uk

Matthew Tree moves premises The Matthew Tree Project will be leaving the Inns Court Centre to move to Filwood Broadway by the end of the year. The charity provides a number of support services in the area including a Food Plus Centre and the Mede Sprint Community Transport. Chief Executive Mark Goodway said: “The Matthew Tree Project operates strategically from a number of locations across Bristol and South Gloucestershire and will remain completely committed to the people and the area of Filwood and Inns Court despite this change of operational location…” He said the organisation’s essential services “would continue to support the community” from its new base at 10 Filwood Broadway. www.the-matthew-tree-project.org

By Community Reporter Rianna Newman Filwood now has its own official Tree Champion – who will be working with people in the area to protect local species and educate groups about their importance. Local resident Jim Smith (67) says: “Anyone can be a Tree Champion – no skills or training are needed, you just need to have an enthusiasm for trees and the environment. “I attend tree related events when it’s possible, as well as the Tree Forum – it’s always good to go and talk to like-minded people. I also go to the Neighbourhood Partnership meetings and update them on any progress I have made – this means it is kept on the agenda.” Jim is also hoping to promote rules and regulations surrounding Filwood’s trees. He has been encouraging the Neighbourhood Partnership to replace dead trees and will be supporting the planting of a number of these by January 2016. He feels it is important to pass his enthusiasm on to the next generation and has been working closely with Knowle West Children’s Centre. Deputy Head Matt Caldwell says “We know that children learn best when they are in an outside environment and Jim has advised us and helped us plant new trees to make our environment even better. “With his help we recently planted twenty fruit trees which the children will watch grow and be able to harvest their fruit…” For full story: www.knowlewest.org.uk Filwood Tree Champion Jim Smith. Knowle West Together – Have Your Say at February event

By Rachel Clarke

Over the last few months, Knowle West Together has been finding out what you’d like to change in the area - and what good things you’d like to see more of. From dog fouling and fly tipping to illness and loneliness, we’ve heard about some big concerns through neighbourhood meetings, surveys, statistics and local organisations. We’ve also seen lots of interest in using green spaces more and holding regular community events like Knowle West Festival. But where should we focus our energy in 2016? And how would you like to be involved? Join us on Thursday 4 February 2016 to have your say and hear from local organisations. We’re planning an afternoon of activities on Filwood Broadway, from 3-6pm, which will be fun, interactive and suitable for the whole family. Look out for more details nearer the time... These conversations will help to shape what Knowle West Together does in the future to bring about the change you want. Local slimmers lose 1,500 stone in time for group’s third birthday

Local Stories Another boxing champion in the family Two former Knowle West boxing champions have now seen a third member of their family rise the ranks to compete at national level. Twins Brian and Michael Davis (68) grew up in Cossington Road and were two of five schoolboy champions from the same street. They discovered they had a talent for boxing in lessons at the former Connaught Senior School. Both brothers went on to win the English Championships and boxed for England, retiring when they were 22 and settling down to family life. Now Brian’s grandson Mickey Parsons (19) who trains at Broad Plain Police Amateur Boxing Club in Easton has just won his fight representing the Community Police Clubs of Great Britain and has the possibility of international colours. He says: “I asked to do boxing when I was about nine ...and that’s when I found out about all the stories - I thought if they could do it, anyone could ... It’s hard work, you have to train but it’s worth it...” Brian says: “You’ve got to prove yourself in life and if you’ve got a talent, use it... ” Being sporty is definitely in the family - as Michael’s son George, now 37 also used to play rugby for England. Slimmers from a local group have lost a staggering 1,555 stone between them since it was launched three years ago. That’s the equivalent of nearly 10 tons or 116 average men that members of Knowle Slimming World have shed in time for the group’s third birthday. Consultant Kim James runs the group from Filwood Community Centre and says around 200 members now attend every week. She says: “I’m delighted that my members have lost weight so beautifully. It has made a big difference to their lives and to their whole family’s lives, and all of them are happier and healthier now. “Slimming has never been more important. Over 59% of people in Bristol are overweight with over 24% classed as obese and I just want to help even more people to make real changes for life..” Kim’s groups are held Mondays at Filwood Community Centre at 9.30 and 11.30am and 5.30 and 7.30pm. The Factory gets into the Christmas spirit

From Knowle West to the House of Lords Knowle West was in the spotlight last month, as one of our digital projects was recognised at a national awards ceremony in the Houses of Parliament. My Knowle West (MyKW) is a free ‘local social network’ that provides a quick and easy way to share photos and updates about positive things happening in the area. You can access it at www.mykw.org.uk or download it as an app on an Android smartphone. It already has nearly 200 users. The app was shortlisted for the ‘Intelligent Communities’ award at the Next Gen Awards 2015, which are described as the ‘digital Oscars’. Members of the KWMC team attended a ceremony at the House of Lords on 5 November. Although My Knowle West missed out on the top award, we were delighted to make the shortlist and see the app, developed through European partnership project IES Cities, recognised for helping to bring people together and share positive activity, online and offline. Get started for free at www.mykw.org.uk If your organisation or group would like to learn how to use MyKW please contact Jen or Makala for training on 0117 903 0444.

Do you always find loads of junk when you get the Christmas tree out of the loft? Do you tend to get rid of old toys and games after the Big Day to make room for new ones? Don’t chuck them: play with them! Over the last few months we’ve been collaborating with artists Ludic Rooms and touring the streets of Knowle West with a toy trike, collecting unwanted toys and games. With funding from the Bristol 2015 Neighbourhood Arts Programme for Green Capital year, we ran a number of ‘toy hacks’ where children and families worked with artists and technologists to make new toys and games from the donated items. Over the last few weeks our digital manufacturing space has turned into a Santa’s workshop…Working with artist Russ Henry, the team at KWMC: The Factory has produced 100 wooden elves, which will be popping up all over Bedminster during the festive season. Children from St Peter’s Primary School have decorated 60 elves through our new schools programme Maker Lab in a Box, where they had the chance to learn about the different stages of design and digital manufacturing. The remaining 40 elves were decorated by Russ Henry – and all 100 have been hidden around Bedminster by the Bedminster Town Team for you to find in the weeks before Christmas. Keep an eye out! It’s been the end of a busy year for The Factory. We moved our making activity into Filwood Green Business Park in May and in October The Factory was recognised for its contribution to training and manufacturing in Bristol. At a ceremony at the Lord Mayor’s Mansion House, the Guild of Guardians presented us with the prestigious Alfred Telling Award, which provides a bursary of £1,500. Youth Moves hosts Royal Visit of HRH The Duke Of Gloucester

Levi Hodge, winner of the Ambition National Volunteer of the Year award for his work with Youth Moves, hosted a visit from The Duke of Gloucester to our youth space at The Park. This visit was to allow HRH to see at first hand the work that Levi has done for his community and to meet other young people who have had their lives changed through working with Youth Moves. It was amazing to have royalty attend our youth club and is great recognition for both Levi and Youth Moves of the work that we do! If you are interested in attending our sessions, coming along to volunteer, can help us with any fundraising or donating any items for our work then please get in touch on 0117 903 9796.

NCS – an amazing opportunity for 16-17 year olds

Youth Moves is really pleased to have secured the contract to deliver the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme for the next three years. NCS is a fantastic once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young people, aged 16-17 years old, which includes residential trips, allows them to gain new skills, become more employable, helps them to meet new people and get involved in their community. This autumn we took 58 young people from Bristol City Community Trust’s education department through the scheme. The teams ran projects taking out clients from South Bristol Drop-In, redecorating the community facilities at The Park Knowle FC, working with older people through LinkAge and supporting/ fund-raising for Marie Curie Cancer care. This all culminated in a graduation ceremony at The Pavilion Gloucester Cricket Ground. If you want to get involved with NCS this summer please go to www.ncswest.co.uk
