nowle West Alliance (KWA) is about working together – we collaborate and we support each other. We believe that everyone has something to contribute, and we seek out opportunities for people to have a say on things that matter to them. We know that people have different opinions about what is important,

Youth Moves – he did it as he knows I have been active on social things in the area for many years. The Alliance is a chance for change, a viewpoint to see, an ear to listen and of course a voice to be heard. It works on local people's behalf but is also open for those same people to be involved if they so wish. The benefits I have seen are numerous; personally I have been positively affected in being part of and working with the team. Long may it continue... was still investigating potential sites – including Filwood Playing Fields. Youth organisation StreetSpace based on Filwood Broadway can see up to 100 young people each week – and regularly uses the MUGA on the old swimming pool site. Project Manager Sam Burrett says: “It’s very important that wherever the new MUGA will be built is in an area young people feel safe. “It is evidenced that young people congregate in areas that are well lit, easily accessible and are busy. The majority of the time this is outside shops. “These are very important factors to take into

consideration when placing the MUGA, if young people don’t feel safe then many will not access it.” Earlier this year the council shelved plans for development at Knowle West Health Park – which also has a well-used MUGA – after residents campaigned to save the site.

Community Champions Knowle West Alliance recently advertised for Community Champions – a new volunteer role. These local residents will help to reach people who may be isolated, lonely or who don’t necessarily feel part of the community. We’re happy to announce that we have recruited three Community Champions so far: Jamila Morris, Naima Abdillahi and Fatoumata Ba. Part of the package will include a £650 one-off payment to people who receive means tested benefits. It will be paid in two instalments, in July and the autumn. Households will get £400 off their energy bills from October, which won’t have to be paid back. PLANNING Alliance bid to keep allotment for community By Alliance Co-ordinator Lucy Holburn Knowle West Alliance has just submitted a bid to Bristol City Council – to keep a popular local allotment as a community asset. Previously run by Knowle West Health Association for 10 years, Let’s Grow Community Allotment is a 1.3-acre site on Springfield Allotments off Andover Road. Due to funding challenges, it was returned to the council at the end of last year – with its future uncertain. The Alliance has recently put in a partnership bid to the council’s Allotment Team to ensure it remains for the benefit of local people. The plan is to invite local groups, residents and organisations to be Plans for new secondary school approved Bristol City Council has approved plans for a new 900-place secondary school to be built in Knowle West – which will be called Oasis Academy Daventry Road.

a part of creating a “shared, productive, learning space” that everyone can enjoy. The three main areas of activity will be: • Growing local vegetables at affordable prices • Volunteer and training opportunities • Community: access to green space and nature-based activities for groups and individuals The Knowle West Alliance (KWA) network of residents and organisations is excited about the potential this site offers to address both the cost of living and climate crisis. “We want to grow vegetables at affordable prices for local people," says Steve Griffiths, a local resident and Volunteer Head Gardener. “It’s an opportunity Oasis Academy Daventry Road is due to open in its permanent building in September 2024 – a year later than planned – subject to achieving further milestones. The school, which will take pupils aged 11-16 from across South Bristol, will be located on the footprint of the former Merrywood School buildings on Daventry Road – due to be demolished. These were home to The Park Centre for over 20 years – with the charity moving into its new purpose-built premises in February on the same site.

the Department for Education and Bristol City Council are working towards opening the school in temporary accommodation, on the site of Oasis Academy John Williams in Hengrove. This proposed location is

to bring everyone together to support health and wellbeing.” Resident and Director of Filwood Community Market, Kevin Williams, agrees: "We can harness the connected local network to get groups and volunteers on the site – so much can happen here." KWA wants to find out how local people want to use the space. So far lots of groups from Knowle and Filwood have come forward, keen to be part of the project – and there's real appetite for making this a collective success. CEO of Oasis Community Learning, John Murphy, said: “We are delighted to share with the local community the name of the new academy and thrilled that plans have been approved by Bristol City Council. “It marks an important step forward in the project to deliver Oasis Academy Daventry Road; a secondary school that will be passionate about the progress of every student and deliver an exceptional education for local young people across South Bristol.” To keep up to date with news about the project visit: www.oasiscommunitylearning.org /our-academies-main/academiesopening-soon/oasis-academydaventry-road

PLANNING Updated proposals for Redcatch Quarter to be announced

Anger as council approves plans for 34 homes in Kingswear Road Residents are angry the council has approved an application for 34 homes on Kingswear Road – without going through the Planning Committee. The new homes will be built on top of a hill between Knowle and Bedminster – with outstanding views over Bristol.

about the height of the buildings – with the new scheme still keeping to the old parameters of 12 storeys. If the revised plans are passed, work is expected to start in 2023 and take around three years to complete. The public meeting will take place on 24 June at Redcatch Community Centre at 7pm. Residents can comment on the plans by visiting www.redcatchquarter.com or call 0117 441 4404.

There were originally council flats on the road which were demolished in 2011 and the area is currently a site for van dwellers. The Northern Slopes Initiative (NSI), a voluntary group which manages the nearby nature reserve, objected to the plans along with 14 residents – because they will also take important green space. The group has written to Bristol City Council expressing its disgust – as on the decision day the council’s planning portal was down – and extra documents had been added. In a statement the group said: “The NSI

were very disappointed to find that the Planning Application for housing on Kingswear Road was approved without reference to the Planning Committee. This is something that can happen if the City Council considers it is appropriate… “It remains our view… that the public should be allowed the right to comment if they wish regardless of the scale of any changes. “Let’s hope this situation is not repeated for any more planning applications in Knowle West!” A spokesperson from Bristol City Council said the scheme would provide 34 much-needed affordable homes with a very high proportion at a social rent. “The site is allocated for residential development within the Local Plan and makes good use of previouslydeveloped brownfield land. As part of the development works, nearby public open space will also be improved… “Noting the merits of the scheme and following public consultation in early 2021, which included engaging with local residents, ward members, and other stakeholders, officers decided to grant permission under their delegated powers.”

Following public consultation – updated proposals for the new Redcatch Quarter to replace Broadwalk Shopping Centre will be revealed at a public meeting on 24 June. The Redcatch Development Partnership which is heading the scheme says the revised plans “reflect the feedback received”. Once the new proposals have been announced – the local community will have the chance to comment again. The plans are expected to be submitted to Bristol City Council towards the end of July. The new £150 million mixed-use scheme was first unveiled in January – and will see the 1970s shopping centre demolished. Redcatch Quarter will include a

neighbourhood cinema – which will be the only one in South Bristol when Hengrove closes and around 800 new homes. There will also be a pedestrian high street linking Wells Road and Redcatch Park – with a café and restaurant area overlooking the park. Plans also include a local supermarket, pharmacy, postoffice and dentist. The cinema will be located within a community hub – along with a new library and café around a central courtyard. Project Manager Francis Hilton said: “Our aim is to create a thriving, vibrant new shopping and leisure destination for South Bristol…” Outline planning permission was given in 2019 for 420 flats and shops – but these were just for the rear of the centre. At the time there were fears

Local voices Filwood Hope saved from closure – but still needs donations A much-needed advice centre on Filwood Broadway providing a lifeline for the community has been saved from closure – following an emergency appeal in the spring. But Filwood Hope – which has been serving Knowle West for 25 years – still needs ongoing funds to continue. The charity offers a range of support services, including help with form filling, benefit and debt advice and foodbank referrals. Earlier in the year, after a “financial scare”, staff launched an appeal hoping to raise £10,000 and were overwhelmed by the response.

A series of brightly coloured blocks appeared on Filwood Broadway in May – with the aim of allowing young people to access free Wi-Fi. They are the result of a ninemonth project run by Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) and youth organisation Street Space Knowle West called Making Together. Megan Ballin from KWMC explains: “… A group of six young women aged 11-16

worked together to design, build and paint these blocks. “The girls wanted a sheltered space where they felt safe and where they could access the free Wi-Fi from their local youth centre… The blocks will be reviewed and hopefully become a permanent part of Filwood Broadway…” Lily (16) who was involved in the project said: “…They are different and unique and they give other people a different aspect on how to create things for other people to use…” Sophie England (19) says: “It is not often you get so many young people in the same room, talking about the same important topics and being able to share their views…” MutualGain – which empowers organisations and communities to reconnect in the social space – will be funding projects to support local young people based on themes from the day. A Participatory Budget event is set to take place late August, where ideas will be presented

Funding to support young people in Knowle West

Since hitting their target, the charity has partial funding until 2025 – but has now started a resilience fund to ensure they can keep going. Centre Manager Pearl Aitken says: “…We have been amazed at the generosity, financially, and the best wishes received from local people as well as those further afield.

“Our appeal has changed from emergency to resilience as we now seek to build up and change how we raise funds. We still need ongoing funds to keep us open and we want to communicate this to the community and wider Bristol…. “We know what FH means to many and has been over the years – and at this time, with finances of families being squeezed, it is needed more than ever…” The donations have allowed the charity to launch a monthly money course at Novers Social Club to advise households facing rising costs. Filwood Hope is now asking people to help it continue through “sharing some words of appreciation” to attract funding, donating or running fundraisers or joining its team of volunteers. Local voices Update on Belfast Walk Community Garden By Site Manager Simon Foster Down at the community garden things are really taking shape – we’ve now got a pond, herb and strawberry patches and have built raised flower beds. We’ve also put wood bark paths down which are accessible for prams and wheelchairs. The local PCSOs have helped to prepare plots – and the Mini Police who attend regularly have two flower beds and a seed table. Ben Griffiths who runs Ben’s Fruit and Veg, also has his own plot here (see below). Anyone can have a plot for free but 10 per cent of their grow must be donated back to the garden to help pay for maintenance. We’ve started a coffee morning to get people involved in the project on Fridays from 9.30-11.30am - just turn up, have a chat, cuppa and biscuits. Women’s Gardening for Wellbeing A new project for women has started in Knowle West combining gardening with crafts and cooking – to improve health and wellbeing through connection to nature. Women’s Gardening for Wellbeing takes place in the garden at Inns Court Community and Family Centre every other Tuesday during term time. We’re planning to hold an Open Day on 30 July from 10am-5pm and hoping to get the cul-de-sac closed for the day to allow children to play safely. If people want a stall, they can get in touch. Artist Claudia Collins will be working on a mural on the back wall – and will be getting young people to design it at the Open Day. In the autumn, we’re hoping to make apple juice, pies and tarts from the fruit and work with As well as growing flowers, vegetables and herbs – participants have the chance to be creative, cook and share food together – with the added benefits of being outside. Local voices Tribute to Pat Filer Pat Filer has been fondly remembered for her long-time contribution to the area – including running the Eagle House Wednesday Club for nearly 30 years.

Pat at Eagle House Wednesday Club last year.

Pat, who died in May at the age of 75, lived in Knowle West all her life. She married her husband Dennis at 19 and had three daughters. She was interviewed for the Celebrating Women of Knowle West project run by Knowle West Media Centre in 2017 – saying she had been inspired to launch the club by her late mother Chris Stone, who helped start the 500 Club, one of the first social groups on the estate. The Wednesday Club was formed at Eagle House in 1992 “to create a place where people could come and talk

An award-winning Brazilian JiuJitsu club has moved to its own premises on Filwood Broadway – with a new name and extra classes. Gracie Barra Knowle used to train at Filwood Community Centre – but with growing membership, having their own space means the club can now run sessions seven days a week. The move to an empty shop just yards away has also meant, due to franchise rules, they have changed their name to Aftermath Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Head instructor Nick Jordan,

who took over the successful group from Jamie Horsman in September 2020, has brought a wealth of expertise and gold medal-winning students to the new venture. Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees came to train with members in support of the club opening. Nick says: "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is great for building confidence, it's great for self-defence which helps to combat bullying… and a fantastic way to keep fit. "The hardest thing is to walk through the door, but once inside you are amongst friends." Local resident Naomi Trickey can testify to the difference it has made for her son who is now a grey/black belt after four years.

I liked her sense of humour and she was also very fun-loving.” Vice Chair Anita Pearce said: “She loved Eagle House and the people and was always the first to offer support if it was needed… She will be greatly missed…” In 2006 Pat was given a Hearts and Stars Lifetime Achievement Award,

and in 2020, a star displayed in Filwood Community Centre’s courtyard – recognising residents who went “above and beyond” to help out in the community during the coronavirus. Image: Aftermath BJJ

and where we could contribute towards our community.” Pat always ran a variety of activities from weekly bingo and talks to entertainment and Bring and Buy tables – with unsold items taken to charity. Members also went on trips as well as having Christmas meals and yearly Women’s Day celebrations. Lifetime friend Brenda James (74) said: “She contributed a lot. I’ve been coming for 15 years and the club gets you out of the house, meeting people and having a chat.” Chair of Eagle House Community Association, Margaret Rawlins says: “Pat was a good supporter of Eagle House since it started – she was a committee member and ran the Wednesday Club. She helped fundraise to keep the centre going. “She was also involved in the wider community and on many committees including Community in Partnership for 15 years and the Neighbourhood Partnership.

She says: “As well as attending four classes a week, he also helps coach the little kids twice a week. "We are lucky to have Aftermath BJJ so close by for giving our kids a safe place to train.“ The club is based at 37 Filwood Broadway. A group of residents and local food organisations who have been meeting regularly to discuss all things food. To find out more email lucy.holburn@kwalliance.co.uk Oasis Connaught Food Club By Food Club Volunteer Kim Adamson The Food Club run by Family Action at Oasis Connaught is still running on Fridays from 1-3pm. It’s open to new members – £1 a year membership, £3.50 a week for approximately £15 worth of food. There’s no criteria, no judgement and it’s open to everyone in the area.

It’s not a food bank so no records are shared with other agencies and you can self-refer. The Food Club is another way to top up your shopping affordably and to reduce food waste – the Club is supplied by the charity FareShare. If you’d like to try it out, just turn up on a Friday and we can get you started.

There is also a Food Club at the Inns Court Centre on Thursdays from 1-3pm. For more information contact leanne.purton@ family-action.org.uk

Happy 60th Novers Park Community and Social Club By Club Secretary Ian Vowles Novers Park Community Association Club was dreamed up by the local people of the area so they had a community centre for everyone to go and meet up. The land was rented on a 25-year lease and residents of Novers Park Road all paid in and helped build the club where it stands today. The doors opened for the first time to the community in 1962 and have stayed open through thick and thin. This is an achievement that should not go unmarked because it is the long-running

legacy of all those that helped to make this club a reality and unfortunately a lot of them have now passed or moved away. In 1974, the Social Club was added to the centre to make it The Novers Park Community and Social Club – and ever since then it has held weddings, engagements, birthday parties, wakes and many other events. It has survived and remained open through all the law changes over the years – the biggest one being the Non-Smoking ban which did close a lot of places. The club did have its doors shut when COVID hit in 2020 – for some in this business it closed their doors for good. But it gave us the chance to have a break, step back and re-think what we would like to do going forward. During the lockdowns the club was given a facelift to bring it

back to its former glory. This was all done by members in their own time and we will be forever grateful to all those that helped. Since the re-opening on 17 May 2021, memberships have gone up by hundreds, use of the club has increased – and it has gone back to its roots and main purpose of being a family club where children are welcomed. Come and experience it for yourself – become a member and support the club. Visit our Facebook page: groups/novers for info. Full story: www.knowlewest.co.uk

The youth charity based in Knowle West has launched a new campaign called ‘Bridging The Gap.’

a cultural, social, and economic divide in Bristol. In South Bristol, there are nine out of ten of the most deprived wards, ten times less the amount of people going to university, with a life expectancy gap of 12 years less than other parts of the city. This runs incongruent to the global image of the city being a great success. Our campaign aims to raise awareness by providing data, telling real stories, lobbying local authorities, businesses, partners and communities to act. We know the obvious barriers, but we also know the endless potential of young people we work with - and we feel the city needs provide a wider range of opportunities and access for this potential to be fulfilled. We are launching a film, a podcast series, a social media campaign and articles asking key questions and showcasing the work we are doing on bridging the gap.

It is inspired by some young people we work who have never visited the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the famous iconic spot that attracts tourists from all over the world. We felt this was symbolic of
