By Community Reporter Rianna Newman

Welcome to issue 69 of the Knowledge Newsletter - it has been a privilege to take on editorship for this edition. With a background in journalism, I previously edited the community newspaper in Barton Hill for four years - and that made me realise how important local newsletters are. They not only keep residents in touch with what’s going on but are also a way for people to express their views or highlight local achievements. For the past three and a half years I have been working with community reporters around the Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill wards to gather stories from around the area - and I’m always amazed at how much is going on. This issue is no different - with photos from the Knowle West Fest (p.5) and activities that have been happening over the past months (p.8). The celebratory theme continues with the long-awaited play park for Inns Court and a record number of students in local schools achieving GCSEs (p.3). Please continue to send in stories and photographs – we’re always looking for content for the newsletter and your community website www.knowlewest.co.uk If you would like to become a community reporter get in touch by emailing sue@kwmc.org.uk or ring Knowle West Media Centre on 0117 903 0444 - we look forward to hearing from you.

With the former tenants of Eagle House Youth Centre moving out - a gospel ministry is set to join the local area this October. International charity Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) Bristol will be using the Centre as church office and a venue for services. It will be taking premises used by the Furniture Factory - now based at Filwood Green Business Park. Pastor Ade Bakare, who has led the group since 2000, says they will provide a “Christian place of worship and a drop-in centre for various community programmes.” The ministry will work with the NHS and Bristol City Council to promote health awareness and also rent the building at subsidised rates to residents and local groups. Ellis started to play rugby from the age of 12, training at Old Reds in Brislington where he was spotted by Bristol Rugby Academy. His advice to other young people hoping to make something of a sport is: “Stick at it. You have to keep going and don’t listen to anyone else…” For full story: www.knowlewest.co.uk

News Pharmacist leaves – after 27 years By Sue Mackinnonn A local pharmacist who has served the community for 27 years has left for pastures new. Robert Davis and his wife Sue came to Knowle West in 1988 and became a fixture at their shop on Filwood Broadway. They are finally moving on and have handed over to Hamed Amin at Badham Pharmacy. Robert says: “What I will miss most is the people I’ve come to know over the years… “ The couple have seen a lot of changes during their time in Knowle West – and also served generations of the same family. Robert explains: “You see people come in and remember them as young children – and see their children having children!”

Record number of students through GCSEs

Residents celebrate opening of Inns Court Playground

With the autumn term now in full swing – local secondary schools have reported a record number of students achieving GCSEs this summer. KnowleDGE Learning Centre in Knowle West - 16 students sat GCSEs. Five years ago, most students were only sitting entry-level qualifications. Callum Jarrett (16) said: “I didn’t think I’d do so well. Dyslexia has always held me back until I started at KnowleDGE…” Bedminster Down – overall results are delayed but the school reported marked improvements in geography and French (95 % gaining C or higher) and history (86 %). More students than last year gained A or A* grades across subjects. Headteacher Gary Schlick said: “I’m once again proud of the achievements our students have made against the background of an ever-changing examination system…” Oasis Academy, Brislington – the 50% figure of students gaining GCSEs was six percentage points up on last year’s results. Several students gained exceptionally high grades across the board. Bridge Learning Campus – at time of going to press results had not yet been published. Full story www.knowlewest.co.uk

Parents and children from Knowle West celebrated the opening of the long-awaited playground at Inns Court this summer. Opened by Bristol Mayor George Ferguson, the playground had taken a year to plan - in consultation with local people and a school - and was constructed by Bristol City Council in just six weeks. Mr Ferguson thanked the Inns Court Residents Association, Greenfields School and the Knowle West Project Board for their hard work. He said: “What I really welcome is that local people have worked so closely with the local council to plan this park… This playground belongs to Inns Court and that’s really important I want you to feel it’s really your park.” One of the main talking points in the play park was the 11ft sculpture - a carved giant redwood trunk created by woodcarver Andy O’Neill in ten days using a chain saw.

Filwood dance group seeks new members By Rianna Newman Robert Davis (left) with new pharmacist Hamed Amin.

He has fond memories of Filwood Broadway when it was filled with other traders and a “thriving area” – and is keen to see Filwood’s regeneration. Robert is now taking time out and hoping to work again after Christmas but is not sure where. His advice to Hamed is: “You have to be a people person - that’s been one of the successes of this pharmacy. People like to know the pharmacist personally.” Hamed says he is looking forward to “the challenge, the excitement … and getting to know the local people.” “It’s been great so far, everyone is very friendly. We shall carry on Robert’s legacy...We have the same level of friendliness and approachability and plenty of energy and enthusiasm.” For full story visit www.knowlewest.co.uk

A popular dance group is looking for new members to join them for a weekly “chat, cup of tea and some exercise.” Filwood Community Dance Club which takes place at the community centre has been thriving for more than 25 years. Vice-Chair Jackie Crook (82) says: “It’s a nice, friendly group, quite relaxed and there’s no pressure to dance – everybody is welcome. Some people come for a good chat and a cup of tea…” Knowle resident Beryl Todd, (90) says: “Even if I couldn’t dance I would come! It’s nice that they try to get people together – one of the worst things about getting old is being alone so often…” The group runs every Monday at Filwood Community Centre, Filwood Broadway, from 1.45 - 4.15pm. To join, simply turn up or ring Jackie on 0117 9721 424. For full story visit www.knowlewest.co.uk

Woodcarver Andy O’ Neill with his “Tree of Life” sculpture.

Mum Gemma Maggs (31) from Inns Court came to the opening with children Josh (6), Freya (4) and two-yearold Emilia. She said: “It’s really lovely. “I think it will improve the community, make it easier for my children to meet their school friends and it’s safe...” For full story visit www.knowlewest.co.uk

Knowle West Fest “a success” The community came together in September for an afternoon of music, food and activities at the Knowle West Fest 2015.

Knowle West Fest At this year’s Knowle West Fest, the Food Heritage Project prepared a range of dishes to celebrate the increasing cultural diversity in Knowle West. The dishes were all prepared by Knowle West residents with a heritage from Poland, Nigeria and Ghana to Sri Lanka, Yemen and South Africa.

Over 300 residents turned out to enjoy the event on Filwood Broadway, which was closed to traffic to accommodate the range of stalls and street games. Organised by Knowle West Together – the event aimed to cater for all members of the community. Sam Carrier from The Park said: “The day had something for everyone –– from showcasing young people’s musical talents and a tea dance in the community centre, to a Playbus for young children and delicious food demonstrations, stalls and a Health Zone for information and advice…” The Phresh Boiiz were one of the bands performing at the festival. and people who had come together to make the festival a success. The local Police brought their horse mounted colleagues, cadets and an armoured van and the fire service brought a fire engine for the curious to sit in. Community Development Officer for Bristol City Council Lynn Parfitt said the idea behind the festival was to bring people in the community

together “having fun, getting people to volunteer or give their ideas about what community is about.” She said: “The day was about welcoming people regardless of their age, culture or whether they had lived in the area a long time or they were new.” Local resident Rachel Greenslade who attended the festival said: “It was absolutely brilliant - Filwood should have more events like this.” For more information about Knowle West Together see p 4. Residents enjoying Knowle West Fest.

Chief Executive of re:work Vicky Beckwith said: “It was such a lovely day, it was so busy, there was loads to see and do, the music was great, the weather was much better than we expected… “A big thank you to everyone who took part and I’m sure next year it will be bigger and better.” Bristol Mayor, George Ferguson congratulated the local organisations

Knowle West “test-tube baby” Louise releases life story

Interview by Sue Mackinnon

The birth of Louise Brown in July 1978 - the world’s first “test-tube baby” - has been hailed as one of the most significant events in the 20th century. It was the start of IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) that revolutionised fertility treatment. Now a married mum of two living in Knowle West - Louise Mullinder (37) has just released her autobiography. She says: “Everything started and ended with my birth but I thought some people might be interested in what happened behind the scenes…” One moment she could be shopping locally and the next be on national TV or flying abroad to visit an IVF clinic. Louise says: “Because I’ve grown up with it, I don’t know any differently… All mum wanted was baby – then she had to share me with the rest of the world…” Born in Oldham General Hospital, Louise was brought home to Bristol, at 12 days old – where the family was greeted by 150 journalists trying to take her picture. She came to Knowle West in 2003 with husband Wesley; she has two sons, Cameron (eight) and Aiden (two), both conceived naturally. Media attention has continued to follow Louise, especially at key milestones – like turning 35 or the birth of her first son, when photographers waited outside her home. An office clerk for a shipping company, Louise says she is a Bristolian throughout and loves living in the city. “I’ve got lovely neighbours in Knowle West and everyone I speak to is polite and kind. I like the little park on Newquay Road… there’s lots of activities for the kids to do... I can’t see myself moving out of Bristol.” Advert

Local women Becky Lane, Keisha Cooper and Christie Selwood attended and reported they had learnt a lot. Becky said: “I didn’t realise how much your chances of survival improved if you catch cancer early – that’s definitely something I will be telling everyone...” Key messages for cancer prevention are to have a healthy lifestyle, including being smokefree, eating healthily and keeping alcohol consumption to a minimum, as well as keeping a healthy weight, staying active and being sun smart. Also make sure you engage with the screening programmes to detect early signs and symptoms and look

‘Green’ pledges are right on the button This summer we unveiled 15 ‘green’ pledges to mark our continued commitment to reducing our impact on the environment. The Do 15 in 15 campaign was launched by Bristol 2015 in April this year, to encourage people to pledge their support for Bristol’s year as Green Capital and make Bristol a healthier, happier city for everyone. During our summer ‘STEAM Fayre’, which offered a range of activities for young people, a group of us pushed the Bristol 2015 ‘pledge button’ and formally launched our pledges. Some of them focus on expanding our existing work – such as using digital monitors to ensure that we have a healthy working environment. Other pledges maximise the potential of our building, such as relying more

Bring out your toys! You might have seen the Toy Trike doing the rounds during the month of September…We’ve been collecting old and unwanted toys as part of The Forgotten Toys Compendium, which is part of the Bristol 2015 Neighbourhood Arts Programme. Working with local people of all ages, we’re transforming these forgotten toys into new and playful games that everyone can enjoy. So far we’ve hosted two ‘toy hack’ days and a whole-community making session at the Knowle West Fest.

Since the project began in August 2015, we’ve heard lots of great stories about the memories associated with play, dolls and action figures have been taken apart, jumbled up and glued back together again, and elaborate stories have been created about these new characters. We’ve investigated how many of the donated toys and games work, how they’re put together and what the possibilities could be for turning them into something else… There’s still time to get involved and join KWMC and Ludic Rooms for some making, recycling fun. Thanks for the summer!

This summer more that 90 young people from across South Bristol aged 15-18 have been giving up their time to help others in the area! These young people gave up over 2,500 hours of their own time to support charities and projects locally!! They’ve been helping to improve lives and their communities, and showing what a great asset and how passionate these young people are about making a difference. They volunteered to: • Help run our sports holiday summer camps at The Park with Bristol City Community Trust - which 84 young people attended (look out for more holiday camps in 2016!) • Help raise awareness of the services provided by the Matthew Tree Project at the Inns Courts Centre. • Fundraise and then cook and serve a free breakfast for homeless people who attend the Wild Goose cafe in town.
