THANKS TO: the Newsletter Steering Group (Ann Smith, Ken Jones, Denise Britt), Neighbourhood Partnership (Andrew McLean, Val Talbot) and Knowle West Media Centre (Rachel Clarke - Editor, Bart Blazejewski Designer, Sue Mackinnon - Community Journalism). All articles express the views of individual contributors and do not necessarily represent the opinions of the Neighbourhood Management, Steering Group or KWMC.

One last deadline Rachel Clarke This is a bittersweet issue for me, as it will be my final edition as Editor. As of the October issue I will be handing editorial duties to my colleague Sue Mackinnon, who is also based at Knowle West Media Centre. Since the Christmas issue of 2010 I’ve reported on major announcements, moments of sadness, pride, and change, and lots of local projects and initiatives. It’s been a privilege to oversee this great Knowle West institution and I hope the Knowledge continues to keep you informed and provide a place where you can share your news, thoughts and hopes for the area. The publication has expanded in my 22 issues and four-and-a-half years, including two redesigns, an expansion of our online presence www.knowlewest. co.uk and a new social media app for our area: My Knowle West - and I hope it can continue to grow. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me in my role as Editor and the Knowledge in general, including our residents’ feedback group, regular advertisers, and our committed contributors. You’ll still see me around the area through my work at Knowle West Media Centre and the Knowle West Together group - and I’ll remain a committed reader! Your new Editor Sue is an experienced journalist and ran a newspaper in the Barton Hill area of Bristol for several years before working in Knowle West. Please contact Sue with your feedback, articles and photos from now on - and let her know if you’d like to join the community reporting team: sue@kwmc.org.uk or 0117 903 0444.

Knowle West festival set to bring the Broadway to life You may remember the days of the Knowle West Carnival, when colourful floats and displays brightened the streets – this September local groups hope to recapture that spirit in a special outdoor festival that will be open for everyone to enjoy. The celebration of local cultures and community is being organised by Knowle West Together, a group of local organisations and residents working together to improve our area and celebrate our community. The Knowle West Fest will take place on Saturday 12th September from 126pm on Filwood Broadway and will include live music performances, a tea dance, sports and games, family activities, and even the chance to meet the local Police horses! The Police will also be giving free security IDs for bicycles, and the event will include a HealthZone, where you can receive a free health check and find out more about the signs and symptoms of different cancers. Anyone wishing to have a stall at the event or get involved as a volunteer steward should contact The Park on 0117 903 9770.

Fundraising for summer fun Local parents have raised enough money to take a group of 450 children and their family members on a special day out. Thanks to the efforts of the Friends of Knowle West Children’s Centre, the group will be visiting Puxton Park, a family adventure park near Weston-superMare, in July. Matt Caldwell from Knowle West Children’s Centre said: “We are very lucky to have a dedicated group of parents...They help to introduce new parents to the Centre, are ambassadors for child reading, adult learning and cooking, and most importantly they help to organise fundraising events!”

By Lloyd Allen Thank you to everyone who had their say in December and January about the proposed new play area for Inns Court. We were able to knock on every door in Inns Court, and left a letter with an invitation to take part in the consultation at houses where there was no one in. Most people were in favour of the play area. The results were used by the Council’s Parks Team and a decision was taken to go ahead with the play area, including some alterations based on what residents wanted. You might have noticed that work has started. On Wednesday 1st July a piece of Redwood was moved into the new Inns Court play park – and chainsaw artist Andy O’Neil will spend two weeks carving into the wood. Hopefully the play area will be finished by the end of July or August - keep an eye out for the opening event. For more information, or if you’d like to be put in contact with the Parks team, contact Lloyd Allen: 0117 922 4320 / 07825 315628 / Lloyd.allen@bristol.gov.uk

Neighbourhood Partnership to become ‘Dementia Friendly’ By Community Reporter Rianna Newman The Neighbourhood Partnership area of Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill is set to become an official ‘Dementia Friendly’ area. Lee Reed, Equalities Champion for the Neighbourhood Partnership and local resident, is heading the campaign – which is about giving people living and working in the community “the skills to adapt”. He says: “It’s all about making little adjustments that make a massive difference … by making small changes you can help people to live well. For example in Somerset they have cards in shops with pictures of coins on them with their value by the tills.” Lee says he hopes to have achieved his goal within a year – but first needs to build a Dementia Alliance of local people and put together an action plan. He will be holding information sessions across the area and spreading the word to parents at local primary schools in September. Chair of the Bristol Dementia Action Alliance (BDDA), Tony Hall, says being a ‘Dementia Friendly’ area means everybody there “knows what dementia is, how to recognise the symptoms and how to manage people with the disease.” The BDDA was formed in 2013 with the aim of making Bristol a “Dementia Friendly City” and also to reduce stigma around the disease. Anyone living in Filwood, Knowle or Windmill Hill who wants to find out more should contact Lee on 07874 061662 or email lee.reed@outlook.com

COVER STORY: A homegrown hero By Sue Mackinnon A Knowle West gardener has been recognised for his work growing organic food in the community - by being given the BBC Radio Bristol Food Hero Award. The Religious Sisters of Charity who have been based in Knowle West since 1937 will be leaving by the end of the year. They have become a real fixture in the area but the remaining nuns will be moving to communities elsewhere and the house on Filwood Broadway will be sold. Sister Maura, who has been based here since 1998, said she was sad to be leaving to move to another community in Birmingham. She said: “It’s been fun… I’ve enjoyed events like the build-up before the Carol Bus goes out and I used to love going round seeing all the Christmas lights on the houses. What I will really miss most is the people – residents come to visit and we run a Ladies Club here every other week. We also go out to visit the sick and people living on their own… I help out at Christ the King School and I’ve enjoyed working with the children.” Over the years the Sisters have been known for their work with local organisations such as Filwood Hope, re:work and Knowle West Alcohol and Drugs Service (KWADS). Resident Denise Britt said the nuns leaving would be a huge loss to the area. She said: “We would always call on them for different projects and they have always supported the things that went on around Knowle West and done lots of work in the community…They have been there since I was a little girl - when I was small I was frightened of them as they wore their habits...” To read the full story visit www.knowlewest.co.uk

Filwood Green Business Park opens with celebration Local residents and businesses joined Bristol City Council officials in May to celebrate the opening of Filwood Green Business Park. The pioneering building – started 14 months ago – forms part of the regeneration plan for the Filwood ward. It contains offices and workspaces and is designed to help small environmental businesses to flourish. The launch included banghra music and performances from Cirque Bijou and eco poet Martin Kiszco, as well as children’s activities. Opened by Elected Mayor George Ferguson, the event also included the cutting of a celebration cake in the shape of the building. Mr Ferguson thanked all those involved in the design and construction of the Business Park. He said: “This is the beginning, I hope, of what is going to be a real renaissance for South Bristol.” Filwood Councillor Jeff Lovell said the local community had been the originators of the project and had ‘sowed the seed’ for the regeneration of the area. Features of the Business Park, designed by architects Stride Treglown, include solar panels, green roofs and natural ventilation. Furniture, much of it ‘upcycled’, has been designed and made by the PopUp Furniture Factory, founded by arts charity Knowle West Media Centre in partnership with social enterprise re:work. presented with his award at the BBC Food and Farming Awards, dubbed “the Oscars of the food world” and now in its 15th year, which took place in Bristol at the end of April. Steve has been working for Knowle West Health Association (KWHA) as Head Gardener on the Springfield Allotments for the past four years. KWHA Allotment Co-ordinator Jan Perry said the organisation was really pleased Steve had received the award. She told the Knowledge: “Steve shows dedication and commitment to his work at the

allotment and strives to produce an array of organic crops which are available to the local community. With the help of local volunteers, Steve has transformed the allotment site over the years to provide a truly magical outdoor space for local people to enjoy.” Steve said: “I didn’t expect to win … when the Mayor George Ferguson read my name out, I was dumbstruck. Basically I just do what I love. I like working outdoors and working with the residents of Knowle West, making people healthier and happier.”

What is the local Neighbourhood Partnership?

Who else is involved?

The Neighbourhood Partnership for Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill is a local decision-making group that delivers positive activities for the Partnership area. These activities are written into a local Neighbourhood Partnership plan agreed by local residents, Bristol City Council and other agencies, such as the Police. The Neighbourhood Partnership also manages a small grants fund to support the work of local community groups and agencies delivering services across the Partnership area.

Bristol City Councillors: Christopher Jackson (Filwood), Jeff Lovell (Filwood), Christopher Davies (Knowle), Gary Hopkins (Knowle), Deborah Joffe (Windmill Hill), Sam Mongon (Windmill Hill)

How can I get involved in the Neighbourhood Partnership? • Come along to any Neighbourhood Partnership meeting – they are all open to any member of the public. The next meeting is at 6pm on 22nd September 2015 at the Windmill Hill Community Association, Vivian Street, Bristol, BS3 4LW. • Pop in to the Neighbourhood Forum. This is an informal meeting, where you can meet your local councillors, representatives from the Police and your local Neighbourhood Officer (Lloyd Allen). The next meeting is at the Inns Court Centre on 5th August. See p.12 for details. • If you are living or working in Filwood, you can come along to the Knowle West Together group. This meets every first Monday of the calendar month – the next meeting is at 3pm on Monday 7th September 2015 at Filwood Community Centre, Barnstaple Road, Bristol BS4 1JP. • If you are concerned about street cleaning, removal of bulky rubbish or anything else that affects the way local area looks, then you can drop into the Filwood Liveability meeting at 10am every last Friday in the month. The next meeting will be at 10am on Friday 31st July at the Filwood Community Centre.

Help keep Knowle West Tidy By Lloyd Allen Lately a number of local residents have reported that there is more dumped rubbish, litter and dog fouling appearing in the area. We really want to see a change – and you can help to keep Knowle West tidy by doing your bit too. Keeping things clean and tidy doesn’t just make the area healthier and safer for everyone, but it makes the place look a lot better and reduces the chances of health risks like rats. Read on for a few simple ideas of things you can do that will make a big difference. Contact Lloyd Allen at Bristol City Council – 0117 922 4320 or lloyd.allen@ bristol.gov.uk for more details or if you’d like to help with the campaign over the summer.

What could happen? Bristol City Council is currently investigating a number of incidents of fly-tipping (illegally dumping rubbish) by rogue traders who advertise themselves on Facebook pages or Gumtree. They collect your waste for a fee and then fly-tip it. Always check that the person or business collecting your waste has a Waste Carriers Licence and ask for a receipt - otherwise you may be committing an offence yourself under Householder Duty of Care S.34(2A) Environmental Protection Act 1990.

“I’ve lived here all my life. In the past few months the area is getting untidy again. It upsets me and my neighbours to see people chucking out stuff, especially as it might be free to get it collected! Seeing dumped rubbish makes the whole area look bad.”

• Use the bulky waste collections service You might be entitled to two FREE bulky waste collections a year if you receive benefits. If not for free, it only costs £15 for up to three items (five black bags equates to one item). You can book more than one collection at once and it’s cheaper than you might think. Visit www.bris tol.gov.uk/bulkywastecollection • Help us reduce fly tipping Help to catch and prosecute people who illegally dump rubbish. Clearing up behind them costs Council tax-payers over £230,000 each year. Report what was dumped, when and

(Novers Park Road residents)

Denise Britt (Knowle West resident)

What can you do to help? • Step up your recycling Not sure which recyclables go in which bins? When you get started you’ll be fine: there’s a guide at www.bristol.gov.uk/recyclingguide and you can get in touch with Bristol City Council on 0117 922 2100 to book a ‘Waste Doctor’ to come round.

who did it (if you spotted them in the act) at www.bristol.gov.uk/reportfly tipping. Your personal details will not be given out. • Take part in a litter pick • Reduce dog waste People who don’t pick up after their dog could face a fine of up to £1,000. Please pick up after your dog and report dog fouling. See ‘How do you report?’ • Become a Street Champion Street Champions keep an eye on their streets and local area and report issues to the relevant authorities in order to get them dealt with. This includes litter, dumped rubbish, potholes in the road, damaged pavements, dog fouling, graffiti, stray animals, anti-social behaviour and more. Shaun the Sheep sculpture designed by Knowle West pupils

Pupils from KnowleDGE have been working with a Bristol artist to paint their own Shaun the Sheep sculpture – to be displayed inside Filwood Library in the summer holidays. Bristol illustrator Tim Sutcliffe worked with seven students from the 140-pupil school in Knowle West to complete the sculpture, which will return to the school in September. Staff ran a Cracking Design Challenge competition for the students to come up with ideas. Winners Jahavnni Foster (12), Kane Armstrong (10) and Rebekha King (13) worked with Tim to put the designs together and create the theme of “Global Shaun”. Art teacher Liz Barnes said the winning design would take on board the school’s “international links with Kenya”. Jahavnni, whose overall design came first, told the Knowledge: “My parents are from Jamaica and we have done stuff at school with other countries like Kenya. I wanted kids in the school to think about the rest of the world. Some kids in other countries are dying and don’t have enough money to go to school…” Illustrator Tim designed a ‘Robo-Shaun’ for the London Shaun in the City Trail, which took place earlier this year. He is working on a new design for the Bristol Trail, which will see 70 sculptures of Shaun the Sheep designed and decorated by artists, designers and celebrities placed around

Local sporting heroes come together to support memory project Sporting heroes from the past came together recently to support a memory project, which has been working with a local secondary school. Olympic and Commonwealth sporting greats attended the Sporting Memories exhibition at the City Academy, Lawrence Hill, in May, and met pupils from Bedminster Down School. The event was attended by Olympic runner and Silver medallist at the 1982 Commonwealth Games, Nick Rose (63), who went to Merrywood School in Knowle West. The Sporting Memories group has been running at venues across the city – including Knowle West Media Centre – for the past two years. Earlier this year Bedminster Down pupils collaborated with older people involved in the Sporting Memories group to record their memories and research old photographs. Nick Rose, who was first spotted running with his school on Filwood Playing fields, said it was good that older sportsmen could provide inspiration to young people. He said: “Sport has played a part in my life for 48 years…I was very lucky, if it hadn’t rained that day we would have been doing football instead of running … and I might not have followed the path I did.”

Levi Hodge was named Volunteer of the Year at the Duke of Gloucester Volunteer Awards for his role in providing positive activities to young people. Launched in January 2015, the awards celebrate the 90th anniversary of the national youth charity Ambition. As well as winning the top prize, A-level student Levi was also recognised in the Leadership category for an ‘outstanding contribution’ to a regional youth forum that has brought young people together with the police, councillors and MPs to address anti-social behaviour. Levi, who works with Youth Moves who are based at The Park, commented: “volunteering has helped me turn my life around and given me a positive outlook for my future. I’d never be going to university without the support of Youth Moves and I’m so grateful to them for nominating me.” Six other winners were chosen for awards, out of 13,500 volunteers in Ambition’s network of youth clubs and projects. As the Knowledge went to press, Levi was set to attend a dinner at Kensington Palace to receive his award from The Duke of Gloucester.

Back for its second year, Filwood Gets Fit ran from 6th – 10th July in various venues across the area. Archery, gym sessions, football, cycling, tai chi, walking, dancing and running were amongst the varied activities on offer. Outdoor areas were used for fitness, including the Run to Knowle West, which tackled the 183 Novers Steps, and Green Gym conservation activities at the Northern Slopes. Vicki Morris, CEO of Knowle West Health Park Company, commented: “It’s great to see local people getting out there, being active and having fun. Lots of people have told me they are keen to do more now they’ve had a go”. We have uncovered 21 hours of footage that shows these local landmarks and legends in all their glory – and it’s available for everyone to view! Back in the 1970s, everyday life in Knowle West was filmed by local people and broadcast to thousands of homes across the city via Bristol Channel, a community cable TV project that ran from 1973-1975. Youth Moves Sports Leaders and young volunteers launch Snow Camp in Bristol - with Olympic Medallist Jenny Jones

Young people from Youth Moves had an amazing weekend learning to ski and snowboard alongside the first Briton to win an Olympic medal on the snow - Jenny Jones. The weekend was the launch of Snow Camp in Bristol; working in partnership with Bristol City Community Trust the young people got expert tuition from Jenny herself. The group were a mixture of young people who have volunteered with Youth Moves and students from Bridge Learning Campus who have been taking their Sports Leaders qualification with us this year - all part of our ongoing mission to support young people from South Bristol to access new opportunities and develop essential life skills.

Other people we want to thank, as we couldn’t do it without you!

• Youth Opinions, who have been doing a great job fundraising over £1000 in six months for Youth Moves - doing bucket collections at ASDA Bedminster, taking part in the Hengrove Glow Run and running a quiz night at The Park. • Corporate volunteers from Rockpool Media and Lloyds Bank who have been helping develop our Springfield allotment site. • The team at Softwire who have hosted another night of coding and pizza for our young people. • Everyone from the community who came down to the launch of our Roundhouse and saw the effort the young people and team have put into that site. • Barton Camp for allowing us to use their site during the May holiday when over 60 local young people got to visit and use the facilities including the pool! • Our partners, local schools, community members and funders, the staff team and most of the young people that make Youth Moves what it is!
