Inns Court Play Area: what’s been happening?

Knowle West: great and green Rachel Clarke As we move into Bristol’s year as European Green Capital - a recognition of how environmentallyfriendly our city is - it’s a great time to celebrate the many fantastic ‘green’ projects in our community. From recycling materials to make furniture (p.5) and a new outdoor walking route across the neighbourhood (p.4), to all of the cooking and growing that’s happening (p.8), Knowle West has lots of sustainable activity to be proud of. In this first issue of 2015 we’re also marking several new beginnings. The Green Business Park is nearing completion (p.4) and you can have your say about the future of Melvin Square (p.4) - I’m sure Knowle West Future would love to hear from you! As well as a possible new playground in Inns Court (p.2), 2015 could also see the alteration of ward boundaries in our area (p.3). This issue contains three great articles written and researched by community reporters. You can contact Sue Mackinnon if you’re interested in becoming a community reporter and writing about stories and issues in the area (sue@kwmc.org.uk). As always, you can send your articles and letters to me by e-mail (rachel.clarke@kwmc. org.uk) or give me a call on 0117 903 0444.

By Lloyd Allen In the last Knowledge there was an article about proposals to build a new play area in Inns Court. Since then over 200 local people have had their say and taken part in the survey. Here are some of the highlights: - 87% of people were in favour of a new park, some of whom live very close to the park; - We received some really useful comments about the age ranges that the park equipment should be aimed at; - There were a lot of positive comments about the plan, but there was strong opposition to the plans too; - Concerns were raised about the equipment being damaged or abused. Requests were made for measures to prevent possible damage. Thank you to everyone who took part in the survey. Your input has been really helpful. For more details please contact me on 0117 922 4320 / 07825 315628 / Lloyd.allen@ bristol.gov.uk

Reviewing the Neighbourhood Forums By Lloyd Allen On Wednesday 21 January, Council and police officers met with local residents and councillors from Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill to look at the Neighbourhood Forum meetings that take place in Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill. What is a Neighbourhood Forum? A Neighbourhood Forum is a quarterly public meeting for residents, councillors, Council officers, local police and other local stakeholders to share what is happening in the area, discuss problems or issues that need attention, and see what can be done to improve the local area. If you want to find out more about what is going on, or you have a problem that you want to speak

2

Why did we meet to review the Neighbourhood Forums? We wanted to see what was good about each of the Neighbourhood Forums, and what could be changed to make things better. There was some very honest feedback, some encouraging comments, and some really good ideas from everyone who attended. Thank you to those of you who came. We shall be putting some of the ideas into action in the coming months. For more details please contact me on 0117 922 4320 / 07825 315628 / Lloyd.allen@bristol. gov.uk

Community hosts a visit from the Mayor By Andrew McLean, Neighbourhood Partnership Coordinator Elected Mayor George Ferguson paid a visit to Knowle West on Friday 13th February. He dropped in to Knowle DGE and met with pupils and parents, before making his first visit to Knowle West Health Park. Chief Executive Vicki Morris and representatives from health projects and the local GP practice were on hand to discuss changes in the Health Service and the impact on local neighbourhoods. The Mayor was keen to learn about the issues and experiences of local people across the neighbourhood, particularly those volunteering their time as activists managing resident projects. Later in the morning he spent some time at Filwood Community Centre, where he met the Centre’s management committee and staff, and learned about the history of the Centre and its hopes for the future. To round off the morning, the Mayor answered questions from local people in a lively question and answer session at Filwood Community Centre. Full details and photos from the Mayor’s visit next issue. The Mayor’s last visit to Knowle West (covered in Issue 58). Photo: Knowle West Media Centre

The future of the popular Knowle West Carol Bus is under threat after the vehicle was gutted by an arson attack. Police and firefighters were called to the scene in the early hours of Saturday 20 December. The bus had been set on fire while parked in Barnstaple Road – following its annual festive drive around the area. The decorated bus, which plays carols throughout its journey, has been a local fixture for the past five years. Supported by local groups and volunteers, it helps to raise money for the Filwood Community Centre roof fund. Chair of Community in Partnership Knowle West (CIP) Denise Britt said she was “shocked and angry” and there was now a possibility the Carol Bus would not run again this year. She said: “I think it’s terrible …It isn’t just about the bus; it’s the hassle, the upset. It isn’t fair – the people that do those things don’t realise the consequences of what they do…” For the past two years the bus has been loaned by the E5 City Church. Pastor Pete Millward said it had been “a write off” and they were not in a “position to replace it” at the moment but it was going through insurance. He told the Knowledge: “It was used for a whole range of things especially mums and toddlers, youth groups or community trips out. We wouldn’t want this incident to distract from the fact it was a fantastic event. Many people from the community were able to come and enjoy the carol service and we plan to continue serving the community in any way we can.” An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: “We can confirm we were called to reports of a minibus on fire in Barnstaple Road at around 4am on Saturday 20 December 2014. The incident has been investigated and there are currently no further lines of enquiry. We would ask anyone who has any information or saw anything suspicious in the area at the time to please contact the Filwood Beat team on 101.”

Ward boundary proposals – what could they mean for you? The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has published plans for new ward boundaries in Bristol. Following a consultation, where people in Bristol were invited to have their say on proposed new boundaries for the city’s electoral wards, the Commission is now considering the responses, with a view to publishing the final ward boundaries in May 2015. The full recommendations can be seen at: https://www.lgbce.org.uk/currentreviews/south-west/bristol/bristol The Commission aims to recommend new ward boundaries that mean each city councillor represents a similar number of voters and the pattern of wards reflects the interests and identities of local communities as well as promoting effective local government. The proposed new

wards include four larger wards served by three councillors and four smaller wards represented by one councillor. Other wards would continue to be represented by two councillors. Every ward has had a change to its boundary proposed. The proposals for our area include expanding the Filwood ward to the northwest, up to Marksbury Road and Parson Street. This would include the Kingswear and Torpoint areas (currently in Windmill Hill) and areas currently in the Bedminster ward (Parson St and some of Bedminster Road, including Hastings Road, Winbourne Road, Somermead, Martock Road, Martock Crescent and Highbury Road). Proposals for the Knowle ward include extending the west boundary so most of Daventry Road falls within Knowle, as well as Cossington Road, Wingfield Road, Beckington Road and properties on the south of Wootton Park.

Green Business Park nears completion

Your community www.knowlewest.co.uk

Knowle West Future: Your Voice, Your Choice By Amanda Ramsay Do you think a network of green spaces is important? At the end of February we will be holding events to see what people think about having a green network alongside the extra housing (up to 2,000 dwellings over 20 years due in various areas). A green circuit is a ring of green spaces around the edge of the estate for people and wildlife, alongside the areas earmarked for new housing, with a link across the estate to complete the circuit. This would give the area something to be proud of and something unique in Bristol.

As the grey ceramic tiles and wooden cladding go up, the Filwood Green Business Park will soon be open for business. The Topping Out event held on 15th December marked the highest point in the build: on the roof a green roof has been laid and photovoltaic panels have been installed. This array of solar panels will produce more than 20% of the expected energy use on the site. Construction work is now concentrating on the internal services, plastering, painting, fixtures and fittings. The Business Park is aimed at environmental and ‘low carbon’ businesses. Bristol City Council is keen to attract those with fresh ideas to the Filwood Green Business Park, which will be ideal for research and development, light industrial uses and office-based businesses. Self-employed tradespeople can take up membership of the ‘Work Hub’ and there will be regular networking events where members can meet other local businesses. Please see our new website - www. knowlewestfuture.org - local notice boards for posters, and the local press for more details. Over the last few months Knowle West Future (KWF) has been busy working with planning experts Feria Urbanism towards developing proposals for a Neighbourhood Plan for the area. In mid-February we held a consultation about Melvin Square and what can be done to improve the area. Other areas may be included later. We need as many active volunteers as we can find to make sure the Neighbourhood Plan becomes a reality, giving local people power over what is happening to their area in the next 20 years. The Neighbourhood Plan is for you, so please get involved! If you can help in any way please let us know. KWF meets on the first Tuesday of the month from 6.30pm, usually at Filwood Community Centre on Barnstaple Road. Please call Ken on 0117 966 8761 for more details or e-mail knowlewestfuture@gmail.com for more information. Local ladies feature in touring exhibition By Pippa Robinson Local mums will appear in a new exhibition about motherhood, which is set to open this Spring. Families with five generations of women have taken part in photography sessions over the last year, as part of the Mother in the Mother project which is exploring the relationships between women, their mothers and their children. Amy Jones, 21, took part in the photography sessions. She is mother to Evie-Mae, 3 months, and she was photographed with her mother Katrina, grandmother Joyce and great-grandmother Muriel. Amy said: “it was a great experience having the five generations photo done. We are not all together often so it was great fun and everyone joined in and had a laugh…Reminiscing on memories and how we bring up our kids with my mum and nan was nice too. It showed me how alike we all are and how things have been passed through the generations.” The photographs are part of the Mother in the Mother exhibition, which also includes interviews with the families and stories about mothering submitted by women across Bristol. The exhibition will be at Knowle West Media Centre, Leinster Avenue, from 14th March to 14th April, and opens with a Celebration of Motherhood on 14th March from 2-4.30pm. The exhibition will move to the maternity unit in Southmead Hospital later in the year. Amy and her family. Photo: Pippa Robinson

Local pop-up factory providing furniture for Green Business Park By Community Reporter Johnny Dadds

Local people are being trained to produce and renovate tables and chairs in a new pop-up factory in Knowle West. The project will also be providing sustainable furniture for Filwood Green Business Park – a centre for Bristol’s environmental businesses run by the City Council and due to open this spring. Located on the site of the former Eagle House Youth Centre in Newquay Road, the factory is providing employment and skills training for people from the area. Project Manager Justin Ricks from Knowle West Media Centre explains: “This contract with Midas construction – the main building contractor of the Business Park – has allowed us to provide local employment while sourcing everything locally where possible…People are really pleased to hear something positive is happening in this building and in the area. By providing training we hope people can progress in this field.” The factory employs five staff members who all live in South Bristol, including two trainees, Cameron Burrell (21) from Bedminster, and Knowle West resident and former postman Steve Probert. Steve (52) says: “I was a postman for 14 years… I’ve got an injury in my foot and arthritis, which limited the duties I can do, so 18 months ago I took ill health retirement. I’m learning how to put the furniture together … I’d like to get involved in getting more skills for myself and training other people.” The pop-up factory also offers opportunities for local volunteers to help re-purpose old furniture. Technician Tom Barnes who runs the CNC router says there will be a chance in the future for people to learn some of the factory skills. He explains: “There are plans to do workshops for people who are interested in having access to the machine.” For more information contact Justin Ricks on 0117 903 0444.

Zumba classes ‘changed my life’ By Community Reporter Rianna Newman Knowle West fitness instructor Kelly Skuse decided to take up Zumba after “looking into a class window and seeing everyone having fun”. This prompted the mother-of-four to attend her first session in the Latininspired dance-aerobics craze the following week. Kelly (33) recalls: “Although I didn’t know the moves, it was easy to follow and I was officially hooked.” Following a year of classes, she decided to train as an instructor, and qualified in September 2013 – now running weekly sessions at Filwood Community Centre. She explains: “I wanted to teach because Zumba helped me to gain confidence and lose weight whilst having fun, so I wanted to help people that were in the same boat

as me when I first started.” To date, Kelly has lost more than eight stone and says Zumba has been ‘completely life changing’. Before taking up the exercise, she describes herself as “depressed, overweight and with very low self-esteem”, only occasionally using the gym. She now takes a range of regular fitness classes and considers herself “so much healthier…” She says Zumba is suitable for all ages and abilities – although recommends consulting a GP beforehand if you have an illness, injury or disability. Classes run every Wednesday from 6-7pm at Filwood Community Centre. For further information contact Kelly on 0741 552 6901.

Emma Caton: Back on Track Up until six years ago Emma Caton was a successful Bristol-based artist with fantastic prospects. Then, on New Year’s Day 2008 Emma was run over and seriously injured by a car travelling at high speed and spent the next four years recovering from the accident. So traumatic were Emma’s injuries that she had to learn to walk all over again. By 2014, though, Emma had become stronger and decided to take the brave step of re-launching her career as an artist. “It felt very different to be in business the second time around”, she says. “I’d been away for a long time and I didn’t have the same confidence as before, and there seemed nowhere to get support for a small independent business like mine”. Emma met business support agency Blue Orchid at a ‘Women Outside the Box’ event in central Bristol in Autumn last year. Blue Orchid specialises in supporting start-up and small businesses and immediately she was assigned to an experienced Business Advisor who came to visit her premises at the BV Studios in Bedminster. The first step was to assess Emma’s business needs and then to put in place a development plan to help her business to survive and grow.

Blue Orchid runs the Bristol Enterprise Support Service on behalf of Bristol City Council, and has a special focus on South Bristol linked to developments at the new Filwood Green Business Park. The flexible 1-to-1 business support provided by Blue Orchid has been invaluable for Emma, helping her to rebuild her confidence and to understand how to develop her business. Now Emma is back on track having recently completed a number of commissions for her resin-based artwork and with a steady pipeline of ongoing work. Emma was recently selected to exhibit at ‘Flux’, a New International Contemporary Arts exhibition set up by ‘Gray’s Art Gallery’, at The Rag Factory, London. Business Advisor Pete Hollingsworth has worked closely with Emma to upgrade her business and marketing plans, and to help her apply to the Arts Council for funding to support her plans to launch a community-based arts project in South Bristol. Says Pete: “Emma’s drive and determination is incredible, and it’s been inspiring for me to be able help her map out and begin her ‘new’ business journey”. Asked why she has located in South Bristol, Emma says: “BV Studios in Bedminster is ideally located and perfect for a creative business like mine. The accommodation is affordable and there’s a dynamic buzz about the place with

so many other artists and creatives based there.” For more information about Blue Orchid’s programme of support for start-up and small business go to www.blueorchid. co.uk email info@blueorchid.co.uk or call 01173 703 134. Emma Caton’s website is at www.emmacaton.com

Exploring social isolation with milk cartons and movies We’re currently making a documentary that explores how being socially isolated can affect young people aged 13-19 - and what can be done to tackle the problem. We recently hired a group of young people aged 18-24 to work on the film with local teenagers. Their research indicates that a large number of young people prefer communicating with their friends online rather than face to face. Also, the Early Help team in South Bristol has reported increased numbers of 13-19 year olds who are socially isolated. Inspired by the ‘missing child’ posters on the side of milk cartons in classic American films, our group has been giving out 3D milk cartons to raise awareness of the film and its subject. They are currently fundraising to buy filming equipment for the project, called Visible You. Any equipment bought or donated will be used by other young people in future projects at KWMC. Watch the video at http:// madeopen.co.uk/projects/visibleyou and please share it if you can! The documentary will be finished in March 2015. Peer into the past… Relive the history of South Bristol and open a giant box of memories. Our MemoryScapes Chest is currently on tour across Knowle West – and inside its drawers are sounds, smells and objects that recall times and places gone by. Back in 2014 we hosted reminiscence workshops about five locations in South Bristol: Filwood Swimming Pool, St Barnabas Church, the Wills Tobacco Factory, Eagle House and Filwood Cinema. We then commissioned Laura Kriefman of Guerilla Dance Project to make a portable chest that would include memories and objects about these places. Inspired by the stories of local residents, the drawers include music from local band The Eagles, press clippings about Knowle West boxing champions, and a selection of short films. As well as documenting local history and change, we hope that the chest can act as an educational tool

Market

Education

A new CYQ level 2 Fitness Instructors course and CYQ level 3 Personal Training course start in April. At competitive prices, the courses are delivered by experienced tutors in a manageable timescale and with full support. Students learn in practical sessions in our large fully-equipped gym and, as part of the course, have access to the gym at any time, free of charge. We are recruiting now for our post-16 courses, starting in September. If a large college environment is not for you and you would like to start vocational training in small, fully supported groups with plenty of practical experience, why not consider The Park? We have courses available in Animal Care, Childcare, Construction and Health & Social Care.

NCS - This is Our Future Have you seen the TV advert or noticed the large billboard posters around advertising NCS? Not sure what it is or want to find out more? Described as a rite of passage for young people and the experience of a lifetime by young people who have taken part, NCS helps build confidence, makes your CV stand out, helps you meet new friends, challenge yourself and have fun whilst also making a difference to your community. If you are aged 16-17 and looking for something to do this summer it all starts at YES! Youth Moves has the contract for NCS and has places available for this summer – just give us a call on 017 903 9796 or fill out a form on the www.ncswest.co.uk website.

Fitness

The Park has a well-equipped gym that was refurbished last year. It has something for everyone, whether you have never used a gym before or you are a serious weight trainer. Friendly, qualified gym instructors are always available for advice or to prepare a free programme suited to individual goals. The gym is open Monday to Friday from 7am to 9pm and at the weekends from 9am until 2pm. You can choose to pay monthly for as little as £15 per month or to pay per visit. If you would like to speak to a gym member of staff, the direct line is 0117 377 3382.

New Street Games Sports sessions Are you aged 12+ and interested in a range of sports, getting involved in tournaments and traveling round Bristol representing your area? If the answer is yes then come along to our new Street Games sports sessions. Tuesday 6.30-8pm and Thursday 6-7.30pm on the outdoor sports court at The Park. Sessions are free and open to all. Competitions will take place every school holiday period, but we will take the young people who have shown the most commitment or attended the most sessions - not the best at the sports.
