Youth centre becomes community furniture factory

Gathering my thoughts Rachel Clarke Autumn is a time of gathering: farmers gather crops as they harvest; schoolchildren gather their books and prepare for a new term. This issue we can see lots of gathering and growth in our community: the Filwood Green Business Park gathers momentum and enters a new phase of building (p.6); two local charities gather funds to support their work in impressive fundraising efforts (p.2, p.3); and 200 stories behind the body art of local people have been gathered too (p.4). The season of autumn is also a time of change - and this issue we say farewell to our neighbourhood Area Coordinator Kurt James, after six years of working in Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill (p.3). We also see the Eagle House Youth Centre transformed into a ‘Pop Up Furniture Factory’ with opportunities in construction, making and design (p.2). Finally, campaigner Mary Smith and a group of young people from Inns Court took action to make some positive changes to their area when they saw vandalism on local buildings (p.4). Next time I write it will be ‘the season to be jolly’, so start thinking about what you’d like to see in your Christmas issue. As always, the Knowledge team would love to hear from you. Rowers race to fundraising success Three local organisations took to the water in September when they rowed across the Bristol docks to raise money for a youth project. Staff from Knowle West Health Association (KWHA), Knowle West Health Park and Broadbury Road Police Station formed a team to enter the Sue Ryder Dragon Boat Festival 2014, which took place on Sunday 14th September at the Baltic Wharf. During the one-day charity event, teams of 16 race Chinese-style dragon boats over a 250-metre course. Short heats take place throughout the day as teams compete for the fastest time, which results in one final race. The team raised funds for Knowle West Health Association’s ‘Charity Challenge’ project, which supports 14-16 year olds to prepare for, and complete, a sponsored physical activity that raises money for charity. Young people learn to plan and deliver a fundraising event, receive media training to set up an online blog to record their experiences, and take part in health and nutrition sessions at KWHA. The team chose the team name ‘Cream of the Crop’ and dressed up as fruits and vegetables. Although some team members had never been in a dragon boat before, the team’s best time was one minute five seconds, and they finished 7th of 36 teams on the day. Although the final figure is yet to be confirmed, over £1,000 has been raised for the Charity Challenge project so far. For more information contact KWHA on 0117 963 9569.

A pop-up furniture factory will open its doors this autumn, offering training and employment for local residents. In November the local arts charity Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) will launch a new six-month programme of design, digital manufacture and construction: the Eagle House Pop-Up Furniture Factory. The factory is located on Newquay Road, within the former Eagle House Youth Centre which closed in 2014. It is leased and operated by KWMC, working in partnership with re:work, Eagle House and Community in Partnership Knowle West. The Furniture Factory will be hiring two local residents as paid trainees, as well as offering volunteering opportunities. There will also be a series of workshops where people can learn about digital manufacturing techniques and make something that they can take away. Equipment will include a CNC milling machine and a laser cutter. Eagle House Pop-Up Furniture Factory has been commissioned to produce office furniture to kit out the Filwood Green Business Park, which is set to open in Spring 2015. This will include designing and making new furniture from scratch, as well as ‘upcycling’ existing office equipment. KWMC hopes that the pop-up factory will lead to routes into sustainable employment. There will be lots of opportunities to get involved. For more details contact Justin Ricks or Hazel Grian on 0117 903 0444.

News in Brief • A charity based in Knowle West has raised over £2,300 from donations pledged via a ‘crowd-funding’ website. re:work offers training to young people and those wishing to re-enter the world of work, and they have been raising money through Fundsurfer to support their work with young volunteers. For more information call 0117 953 0689. • The Hearts & Stars awards were due to take place on 6th September but have been postponed. Bristol MP visits Children’s Centre By Matt Caldwell, Knowle West Children’s Centre This September Stephen Williams, MP for Bristol West, visited Knowle West Children’s Centre to see how extra government funding for two-year-olds is being used. He visited the Inns Court Centre, which hosts a ‘satellite setting’ that is run by the main Children’s Centre. The Inns Court space not only provides extra places for two year olds in Knowle West, it recently had an Ofsted inspection that found it to be ‘Outstanding’. During his visit Stephen Williams heard from parents about the ‘Five to Thrive’ programme which is being launched in children’s centres across Bristol and links brain development in young children with five basic principles of ‘respond’, ‘cuddle’, ‘relax’, ‘play’, and ‘listen’. Sarah Salmon, Headteacher at Knowle West Children’s Centre, said: “I was really pleased Stephen could come

After six years of working with residents to tackle issues in our community, Kurt James is leaving the area to take on the opportunities and challenges of a new neighbourhood. As the Area Coordinator for the Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill Neighbourhood Partnership, Kurt has been working across the three wards to listen to community problems and help residents, community groups, and the Council to find solutions. He is now responsible for managing the Neighbourhood Partnerships of Ashley, Easton and Lawrence Hill, and Cabot, Clifton and Clifton East. Over the last few years Kurt has worked closely with his staff team of Anita Pearce and Valerie Talbot, local councilors, residents, community groups and local agencies to make the area cleaner and tidier; to improve children’s playgrounds and other facilities; to bring investment into the area such as new housing, a new school and the Green Business Park; to give small grants to over 100 local organisations; to make the area safer and healthier; and to let residents know what is happening through funding the Knowledge community newsletter. Kurt said: “It has been both a challenge and honour to work in Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill, and I will miss the area. I have met and worked with many great people over my time here who are deeply committed to making their neighbourhood a better place to live in. My one regret in leaving is that there is still lots to do.” Lloyd Allen, Neighbourhood Officer for Bristol City Council, said: “It’s been a great pleasure to work with and learn from someone who has delivered so much for the area - and who is so well regarded by locals and Council officers alike. Kurt will be missed. I hope that, together, we will be able to keep moving forward for all of Knowle West.” Look out for an introduction to our new Area Coordinator in the next issue. and visit both centres so that he could recognise the high quality practice we provide for our very youngest children and also have a chance to speak to our Parent Ambassador Chantelle Simpson.” For more information contact Knowle West Children’s Centre on 0117 903 0214 or visit www.knowle westchildrenscentre.bristol.sch.uk Stephen Williams MP meets children at Knowle West Children’s Centre. New exhibition scratches the surface of local tattoo culture

This summer social media was dominated by images of people being doused in cold water - from our friends and family members to celebrities and sportspeople.

A Mobile Tattoo Parlour toured Knowle West this summer, collecting photographs of residents’ body art and the stories behind them. 200 stories have been collected - and eight have been included in a new exhibition at Knowle West Media Centre, which opened in September.

Millions of people have taken the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money and awareness for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and motor neurone disease, as well as many other charities. This September one Knowle West resident took the challenge, but with a difference…

‘I Will Always Have You’ explores Knowle West’s tattoo culture and the fascinating reasons why people have tattoos, whether it’s to remember a loved one, mark an occasion, or act as a ‘mask’ or distraction. The exhibition includes photos and audio, as well as a digital exhibit where visitors can see tattoos close up by using their own bodies to control a 3D tattooed character. A preview event took place on 11th September with a live tattooing demonstration and a talk about memorial tattoos. The project was featured on BBC Points West, where local resident Soniya Mundy was interviewed about her tattoos. KWMC’s Arts Producer Melissa Mean said: “It’s estimated that about one in five British adults now has a tattoo. We wanted to understand why tattoos are increasingly popular and to celebrate Knowle West’s vibrant tattoo culture.” The exhibition is open at Knowle West Media Centre, on Leinster Avenue, from Monday to Friday until Christmas. Campaigner takes the plunge to combat Inns Court vandalism

Mary Smith OBE has been campaigning within the community for decades and was a founding member of Knowle West Against Drugs (KWADs) in 1994 and the South Bristol Community Construction Company in 2001. She decided to take the Ice Bucket Challenge to highlight the problems of vandalism and graffiti in the Inns Court area. She said: “I wanted to highlight the damage that’s being done – constantly being done – to our little church, Holy Cross, and the Inns Court Centre.” The Challenge involves having cold water poured over you whilst being filmed, then nominating someone else to do the same. But before filming began, Mary assembled a team of young people from the Inns Court area to help with a clean-up operation, scrubbing graffiti off the church door and giving it a fresh coat of paint. She explained that the vandalism is being caused by “young people that live around [Inns Court]” – and she adds: “we thought we’d bring other young people, who also live around here, to tidy up their mess.” Mary explains that the aim of the video is not to ‘put young people down’, but to raise awareness of the problem: “we wanted to highlight it and say: ‘we forgive you, but please, please don’t do it again’”. When the moment arrived to take the plunge, filmmakers from Knowle West Media Centre were on hand to capture it. ‘Knowle West Ice Bucket Challenge’ can be viewed online at www.youtube.com/knowlewestmedia/videos

New face at The Inns Court Centre The Inns Court Centre has welcomed Hannah Sharp into the role of Community Link Coordinator. Filwood Library has a walk on the wild side By Hazel Lawrie, Library Supervisor On Friday 15th August ZooLab came to Filwood Library to lead an animalhandling workshop called ‘Myths and Legends’. This was to complement the theme of the Summer Reading Challenge: ‘Mythical Maze’. It aimed to introduce children to the extraordinary creatures from the world of myths and fairy tales - all with a little help from some awesome animals!

Photo: Hazel Lawrie

Our ZooLab ranger brought lots of animals with her including: a giant African land snail, a Madagascan hissing cockroach, a bearded dragon, a Chilean rose tarantula, an American corn snake, and a white domestic rat called Snow White. The children were able to touch, stroke and even hold some of the animals. What an experience! For more information visit www.zoolab uk.com or drop in to the library on Filwood Broadway.

Local mums share their stories - and similarities By Pippa Robinson The arts project for mums, Mother in the Mother, has been working with more families in Knowle West this summer. They have been taking photos and discussing what it’s like to have four or more generations of women in the family. Sharon Osbourne, her daughter Dawn, mum Eileen and grandaughter Maddy told us of their similarities. Sharon said: “A lot of our mannerisms are the same. Quite often we dress the same. I’ll phone

Levi and James teaching at Gamadubu primary school. Photo supplied by James Maby.

Where do I start? After four months of intense fundraising, James Maby and I raised enough money to go on an inspirational, memorable, lifechanging trip to Botswana. There were times when I thought that it was not going to happen, but the fundraising really pushed us to the limits! To kick off our experience we decided to explore how children are educated in Botswana. James and I chose to attend Gamadubu primary school in the poverty-stricken village of Gamadubu, just outside the capital city, Gabarone. On arrival we were invited to attend a ceremony to be officially welcomed to the area by the chief of the village. We spent four days at the school where we did a range of activities including teaching. One of the most hard-hitting moments was visiting the Matudi Blind Centre. I had anticipated that living conditions would be really bad, but the scale of the problem was even more immense than I had imagined. The floor was uneven, there was barbed wire on the fences…but despite all the obstacles the children had, they were still happy! When we visited the centre the children were all at school so we decided to paint their dinner hall, so this improved the conditions where they were eating. We also visited an SOS children’s village and a Childline centre, which are both orphanages. These were very emotional times for the group. We would like to thank everyone who supported us to make this life-changing trip happen. Levi and James visited Botswana through Youth Moves, in partnership with Bristol City FC Community Trust. Full story at www.knowlewest.co.uk up Dawn to ask something and Dawn says, “I was just thinking that’ or ‘I was just going to ask you that!’ We tend to think along the same lines. And our cooking: I cook like mum and Dawn cooks like me…” If you have four or more generations of women in your family and would like to take part and have family portraits taken contact Pippa: pippa. onestory@gmail.com

New developments

Families move in to new housing development By Owen Thornton, Curo

www.knowlewest.co.uk

Work continues at Filwood Green Business Park By Iwona Tempowski, Filwood Green Business Park Passers-by will have seen the new Filwood Green Business Park taking shape between Hengrove Way and Filwood Park. There is a 12-month build programme and Bristol City Council is carefully monitoring its progress.

This summer a housing development was completed off Novers Park Drive, with 13 two- and three-bedroom homes provided by housing and support organisation Curo. The site is in the Knowle West Regeneration Framework area and was allocated for housing development in the Framework plan. A new road has been created for the development called The Bridleway. Councillor Mark Bradshaw, Assistant Mayor with responsibility for New Homes and Regeneration, said: “This is a very welcome addition to the city’s affordable housing stock at a time when housing is at a premium.” Curo funded the scheme with an additional £400,000 investment from the Homes and Communities Agency. For more information visit www.curo-group.co.uk

The steel frame has been completed, walls are being built up and the glazing and roof work is starting. The building should become watertight during October. The photovoltaic panels, which will provide at least 20% of energy used on site, will then be installed.

For more details visit the new website www.filwoodgreen.co.uk or follow on Twitter @FilwoodGreen The Bristol Enterprise Support Service, a free business start-up service for residents, is also starting to see results with nine people assisted to develop their ideas. Young people triumph at national Festival of Code Three young people from Bristol were recognised at a national event for young coders this summer – holding off competition from across the country. Chris Chapman and brothers Rhys Marsh and Owen Marsh won the ‘Code a Better Country’ category at the Young Rewired State Festival of Code 2014 with their app CityRadar.

During the annual Festival of Code young people use freely available open data to make websites and apps that address ‘real-world’ challenges. CityRadar allowed people to use their mobile phones to quickly report issues in their community such as graffiti or fly tipping. Chris, Rhys and Owen developed the app at KWMC over just four days, with support from mentors from the University of Bristol and Chartered Institute for IT (BCS). Bringing the past to life in a new exhibition inspired by local memories Did you work at the Wills Tobacco factories in Bedminster or Hartcliffe? Did you take your family swimming at the pool off Filwood Broadway? We’re developing a new exhibition inspired by people’s memories of South Bristol and we’d love to include as many local stories and artefacts as possible. We’ve already held ‘memory workshops’ about Eagle House, St Barnabas’ Church and the Filwood Broadway cinema, when we uncovered fascinating stories about the early years of the estate. The MShed museum even loaned us the velvetcushioned seats from the cinema! We have workshops in the pipeline about other locations including Filwood swimming baths and the Wills factories, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.

tre. We’d love to hear your stories and songs, and see any photos, mementos and cigarette cards you might have. The workshops and exhibition are part of a project called MemoryScapes. We hope they’ll provide an opportunity to relive and reconnect with the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of times and places gone by. We also plan to use them as reminiscence tools for people with dementia and memory loss. Experience the history of South Bristol through the eyes of your parents, grandparents and neighbours. Animal Centre

We are really excited to be announcing the brand new animal care centre at The Park named KWAC (Knowle West Animal Centre). It is a new state of the art centre specifically designed for animal care focused education within the community. A lot of hard work and determination has gone into developing the centre with animal welfare at its heart. Most animals have been rescued and all of them have a story. Courses for young people run by The Park and City of Bristol College are providing up-todate animal welfare education to learners aged 16+ in line with recognised qualification standards. It also provides opportunities for learners to engage with the community and share their knowledge of animal welfare. After school clubs, birthday parties and holiday activities will all start soon.
