A Summer of Sport

Jeff Lovell (Labour) jeff.lovell@bristol.gov.uk | 0117 353 3377

Rachel Clarke This summer threatened to be a bit of a wash-out when it came to sport: England knocked out of the World Cup during the group stage and the British favourites – and defending champions – making early exits from Wimbledon and the Tour de France. But then Filwood Gets Fit came along! It’s been brilliant to see so many people getting involved in health, fitness and sporting activities in our area. I was part of the team organising the community festival and we had lots of support from local schools, charities, older people’s groups, children’s clubs and more. The ‘Run to Knowle West’ event was a great challenge, where runners tackled the 96 Novers Steps against the clock. The best time stands at 27 seconds. Can you beat it? The walks around the community and the Filwood Summer Fayre on 12th July were some of my highlights. I’d like to thank everyone who made the event a success – and helped us show how much there is to do in BS4. I hope Filwood Gets Fit has inspired more people to stay active – and have a good time doing it. For more details see the special pull-out from pages 7-10. As always, the Knowledge team would love to hear from you. Send your articles and letters to me by e-mail (rachel.clarke@kwmc.org.uk) or give me a call on 0117 903 0444. World Cup fever grips Knowle West

By Sue Mackinnon

World Cup fever gripped Knowle West again as local people hoisted their England flags to show their support for the national team. Torrington Avenue was one of the most decorated streets in the area with bunting covered in St George’s flags stretching across the entire road. It even featured in national websites and newspapers to show local people’s dedication to their team. Resident Mandy Noel (33) said: “Most of the flags are handmade and had to be tied together – this goes up every four years. It’s a good atmosphere down here…” Linda Pickford (52) said: “We’ve lived here 29 years and it’s always been like this, this year it’s even better because everyone’s getting involved. You’ve got to support the team and it’s a good community spirit, I haven’t seen anything like this since the Queen’s Jubilee.” In Leinster Avenue the highly decorated home of Donna and Paul Griffin attracted a lot of attention. It takes the couple two days to complete, with England and Union Jack flags across the windows, as well as bunting and inflatable footballs. The two plaster horse heads at their front door even have England hats. Donna said: “We’ve been doing this since 2006, we just like supporting England. I’d like to collect a pound for every photograph that’s been taken!”

Your local councillors Local elections took place in May and several Council seats were contested in our area. Bristol City Council has 70 councillors - two for each of the 35 areas (or wards) in Bristol. The councillors are elected by registered voters.

Farewell to Filwood’s friendly face By Rachel Clarke, Editor

News in Brief • The Filwood Gets Fit festival kicked off on 7 July with a special presentation to Year 6 children from Ilminster Avenue E-Act Academy, by Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Faruk Chowdhury. The pupils took part in an interschool competition to design a logo for the week – and three designs from the academy were chosen. The school received £100 of vouchers for sports equipment as a prize. For more about Filwood Gets Fit see pages 7-10. • Congratulations to children from Christ the King Primary School for a spectacular fundraising effort during Lent. The school, on Filwood Broadway, raised over £2,500 for charities including CAFOD (Catholic aid agency), BUST (Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust), the local Food Bank, a cancer charity, and a blanket scheme for people affected by conflict in Syria. • Bristol has received £4.8 million funding to help small and mediumsized businesses gain access to high speed, high grade broadband. These businesses could save from £200 up to £3,000 in connection costs, through the Department of Culture Media & Sport’s Superconnected Cities connection voucher scheme. For more information visit www.connectionvouchers.co.uk/bristol/

For over twenty years she has been a familiar face on Filwood Broadway – now Anita Pearce is moving on to new opportunities. Anita, who grew up in Filwood and attended Merrywood Grammar School, has worked in the community since the early 1990s. At the end of July she will be leaving her role as Neighbourhood Renewal Facilitator for our Neighbourhood Partnership. In 1992 Anita was one of the founder members of KWADS [Knowle West Against Drugs] and campaigned for better support for individuals and families affected by drug addiction. She went on to work for Knowle West Development Trust and Neighbourhood Renewal. One of her career highlights was meeting the then Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2007. She said: “I was ever so proud. I had a photo with him holding the Knowledge Newsletter! I also met Prince Edward at Knowle West Media Centre.” In 2008 Anita helped to set up football sessions in the Newquay Road area and she has worked on projects including walkabouts on Torrington Avenue. She remembers: “We’d pick up any issues with litter, windows, housing, graffiti… bringing all the right people together. Everything I’ve done has been with the community – I’ve never done it on my own.” Vicki Morris, Chief Executive of Knowle West Health Park Company, said: “Everyone will really miss Anita. I often sought her advice when I was unsure what to do next: she always found time to help me.” Anita’s manager Kurt James adds: “Anita always wore Knowle West on her chest and fought endlessly for improvements to be made in the area. She will be missed and we cannot thank her enough for all that she has done.” Anita said: “I’d like to say thank you to the colleagues I’ve worked with during my time here - especially all of the amazing residents. I’m sorry to not mention everyone by name…but they’ve all played a part and I value every one of them.” The Knowledge team would like to thank ‘Neet’ and wish her good luck for the future. On 10 May one of our parents, Chantelle Simpson, spoke to a full audience at St George’s Bristol at the ECHO conference ‘Being Two: The Age of Enchantment’. Chantelle outlined a programme she has been working on at Knowle West Children’s Centre called ‘5 to Thrive’, which is based on the importance of early childhood attachment and development in the brains of babies and young children. The programme focuses on five actions (Talk, Play, Relax, Cuddle, Respond) that parents can engage in, and which have proven positive results in life skills and life chances later on in a person’s life. Chantelle spoke after talks given by Professor Chris Pascal OBE, who is President of the European Early Childhood Education Research Association, and Kate Cairns, an author and trainer. The conference discussed the case for invest-

ment in two-year-olds, outlined new knowledge of child development from conception to two, and explored the environmental conditions and people required for two-year-olds to thrive and reach their potential. Chantelle will present again in Surrey in July. If you would like to find out more visit www.fivetothrive.org. uk or come along to our launch at Knowle West Children’s Centre, Inns Court, on Wednesday 6 August at 11am.

Your Community www.knowlewest.co.uk

Inspector Nigel Colston returns to Filwood On 28th July Inspector Nigel Colston will become the new Police Neighbourhood Manager for the South Bristol area. You may remember Inspector Colston from his six years as a Neighbourhood Sergeant for Filwood, from 2005 – 2011. The Knowledge spoke to him about his new role and the forthcoming changes to the neighbourhood police team – and he told us he’s “absolutely delighted” to be back in the area. Q: Why are changes being made to the Police?

Knowle West Future hits the road to listen to you By Amanda Ramsay Knowle West Future (KWF), the forum of local residents, workers, councillors and representatives of community organisations, officially launched on Saturday 21 June at the Make your Neighbourhood event at Knowle West Media Centre. KWF is a forum developing a Neighbourhood Plan which will direct development and land use in our area. We will be talking to local people over the coming months to decide the priorities for our work, whether that be housing, shops, green spaces, sports facilities, things for children and teenagers to do, or something else. Visit us at the following locations, so you can add your voice to what is going on: • Friday 18 July, 12-4pm, Melvin Square • Friday 25 July, 12-4pm at Inns Court KWF meets on the first Tuesday of the month, from 6.30pm. You will find more details, including meeting venues, at www.knowlewest.co.uk/ regeneration/kwandf/ on Twitter @ KWestFuture and on Facebook: www.facebook.com/KnowleWest Future. All residents and people who work in the area are welcome to attend our meetings. To receive more information or if you wish to get involved please email KnowleWest Future@gmail.com or contact Ken Jones on 0117 966 8761. Knowle West Future needs more volunteers, especially younger people. Contact Ken Jones if you’re interested.

A: Like everyone else we are facing significant cuts to our budget, and so we are actively looking at ways of doing the same job but at less cost. It isn’t just about saving money though - our staff have told us that they want to adopt a “one-team” approach and that they want to keep our focus firmly upon serving the public. If you watched the recent “Police Under Pressure” TV programme you will have seen that South Yorkshire police are considering cutting their entire Neighbourhood team. That is something we are keen to avoid. Q: So what do these changes mean to our neighbourhood team in Filwood? A: There will be no loss of PCSOs, Beat Managers or Neighbourhood Sergeants for Bristol. The only obvious impact will be a change from having two neighbourhood inspectors for South Bristol, to having a single Police Neighbourhood Manager. The response teams will now become known as local policing teams, with a mix of “response” and “neighbourhood” staff working in effect as a single team. Q: As the new Police Neighbourhood Manager, what will your role involve? A: The Neighbourhood Manager will act as the lead for all strategic and longterm problem solving. It will be my responsibility to ensure that we don’t lose sight of our neighbourhood policing approach and that we maintain and develop strong relationships with the public that we serve, and that we work together with partners. Q: Are there going to be any changes at Broadbury Road Police Station? A: There are no plans to dispose of Broadbury Road so far as I know. It seems to be one of the few stations that is perfectly placed within the community, and allows the entire Neighbourhood team to be based within easy travelling of their beat areas. We are actively examining opportunities for some of our partners within Bristol City Council to either be based here, or to have a “hot-desk” facility. I think the immediate future of the station is reasonably secure. Q: How can people get in touch with the Neighbourhood policing team? A: Phone 101 and ask for the Neighbourhood policing team that covers your area. Alternatively, visit the website: www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/your-area

Building continues at Green Business Park Filwood Green Business Park is continuing to take shape, four months after Midas Construction began work on the project. Jamie Harwood, Operational Director at Midas Construction, said: “The East building steel frame has now been completed, including the adjacent Hub’s structural frame. Work to the South block’s steel frame has also begun. Ground works are well established with

foundations complete and drainage well underway, including works to Hengrove Way.” For regular updates visit www.bristol.gov.uk/page/ planning-and-building-regulations/ filwood-green-business-park

‘Happy and Active’ event for older people Knowle West will be staging an event for over 55s in October as part of Bristol’s Celebrating Age Festival. ‘Happy and Active in Knowle West’ is being jointly organised by Knowle West Health Park and Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) - following the success of last year’s event when over 100 people attended. The aim is to promote local groups and activities so older people can learn a new skill, get more involved in their community or become healthier. A variety of tasters are planned, from walks, a tea dance and Tai Chi to photography and art sessions and film screenings. There will also be the chance to have a go at bread making and afternoon tea will be served.

A

round 250 visitors from across Bristol flocked to three local sites in Knowle West for the Get Growing Trail in June. Local food producers at Andy’s Haven Nursery at The Park, Bramble Farm on the Northern Slopes and Let’s Grow Community Allotment opened their gates to show visitors the work they do. They are all part of the Edible Landscapes Movement (ELM) and have worked with Knowle West Media Centre to use digital media to link with other producers and share their stories online.

Highlights of the weekend included chicken feeding, animal petting and stalls selling local produce and plants. There was also the chance for visitors to learn about bee keeping, seed planting and see wildlife ponds as well as enjoy barbecues on the plots. Mandy Swainger from Bramble Farm said: “The weekend was enjoyed by all - visitors were very interested in what we do and we had people who had never been here before and said how lovely it was. We showed people the animals – we had the lambs, pigs as well as ducklings, guinea pigs and rabbits.” Keep up to date with the producers at www.mykw.org.uk spanning 87 years!

Sue Cooke, Operations and Development Manager for Knowle West Health Park Company, says: “We had such a positive response to the event last year, we are delighted to be running another. Getting older people active in their local community is vital in preventing them from becoming isolated.” The Celebrating Age Festival is being launched on 27 September at M Shed, followed by two weeks of Neighbourhood Activities across Bristol. ‘Happy and Active in Knowle West’ will take place at the Health Park on Downton Road on Tuesday 7 October from 1-4pm. For more information contact Sue Cooke on 0117 377 2252 or Sue Mackinnon on 0117 903 0444. For more information about the Celebrating Age Festival visit www. celebratingage.org.uk

Earlier this month the residents of Filwood walked, cycled, danced, stretched and exercised their way towards a healthier lifestyle. They took part in Filwood Gets Fit, a community festival organised by Knowle West Together. Filwood Gets Fit ran from 7th-12th July and aimed to help us all get active, whatever our age or ability. According to the Council’s latest Quality of Life Survey (2012), levels of physical activity in Filwood are lower than the city average. From Bristol to Botswana

Making a difference

By James Maby

Get on board with a new men’s group

his year, Levi Hodge and I have been busy fundraising for a once in a lifetime opportunity: to work with children and young people in Botswana, Africa. We will be embarking on this trip in July 2014. Whilst in Botswana we will be working in primary schools and villages assisting in classrooms and coaching multi-sports. To raise the money [for our trip] we have done lots of different fundraising projects and challenges. During the Easter Bank Holiday I took part in a challenge: ‘Bike for Bots’. We set ourselves the challenge of cycling 211 miles from Lands End back to

By James Newman Knowle West Men’s Platform has been created to highlight what’s going on for men in the area. We’re currently working on a project with Knowle West Children’s Centre for the Early Years 3 garden: re-decorating a boat! We have been fortunate to have some dads come along to help us out and pop the boat into place. We’re thinking about adding a wooden cabin and ships wheel next… Also, Knowle West Health Park and the Family Services Team are working together to hold ‘My Shout’, a monthly informal gathering to chat about community provision for men. Local men who have ideas about what they’d like to see happen in the area are welcome, as well as representatives from local organisations keen to engage with men. Maybe you’d like to see more male-friendly places to hang out with your kids? Maybe you’re retired and would like to start/join a group of likeminded men? Whatever you’re interested in, ‘My Shout’ offers the space to have your say and meet with others who are interested in these issues. We’re also looking to work with stay-at-home dads. If you’re at home with the kids all day and would like to know what’s available for you, get in touch with Harry. For more details contact James (jnewman@knowlewesthealthpark. co.uk or 07824 806836) or Harry (harriet.wright@bristol.gov.uk or 0117 903 0214). ... and after

Bristol in only two and half days. It was most definitely a tough journey but I managed to succeed! We also held an adults’ football tournament at The Park. 11 teams entered and over 100 people were there supporting the event. Levi shaved off all his hair on the day raising over £400 in donations. The day was a massive success! We’ve also washed cars all day for clients and visitors at The Park. Stanton Drew FC hosted a charity football match one Saturday afternoon and [we’ve done] other small fundraising projects. We would like to say a massive thank you to anyone who supported us in any way!

New developments

New business boost for Filwood Broadway

KWL Fruit & Veg interview by Community Reporter Kasia Guzowska

Knowle West Health Association on the move By Community Reporter Kasia Guzowska

Knowle West Health Association has moved from Filwood Community Centre just down the road to Filwood Broadway into the old home of KWADS (Knowle West Alcohol and Drugs Service). KWHA regularly provides a range of activities for local residents, including a Community Kitchen, footcare specialist and community allotment that grows fresh produce and even has chickens which produce fresh eggs for sale. For Jabez Croney, the Community Development Worker: “The move was not only an expansion of the site, but also an expansion as a team so we can operate more efficiently and add quality to existing services.” He says with so many projects running every week, there are plenty of activities for the public to get involved in from building sheds to chicken rearing. Future projects and developments include an outdoor teaching shelter available for hire and special interest groups such as textile and jewellery making classes. There are also plans to bring more animals to the allotment including sheep and even ponies. For more information call 0117 963 9569 or visit the new office at 49b Filwood Broadway, BS4 1JL.

Two new businesses have opened on Filwood Broadway – both run by local residents hoping to boost the area. Café Filwood Snax opened its doors to customers at the end of April in the former bakery and is managed by friends Angela Tarr and Angela Betty. Angela Tarr told the Knowledge: “It’s good to see shops opening here because it’s been dead for a number of years. People are enjoying having the café up here, we’ve got a lot of regulars now.” The cafe sells breakfasts, sandwiches, hot lunches and drinks – it will also provide pack lunches for school children and deliver around the local area and beyond including Withywood and Bedminster. Angela says they are also ‘flexible and do special requests for meals if asked.’ They even sell loaves of bread and rolls to regulars who have run short. Plans for the future include a complete revamp of the kitchen and starting a carvery for Sunday roasts. Close by KWL Fruit and Veg opened in May and is run by Dan Summers and his daughter’s partner Paul Wheeler - who live only a short walk from the shop. Assisted by Kallie Summers, Dan’s daughter, and his wife Wendy, the family-run business has settled into what used to be the Salvation Army charity shop. Dan says: “Some of our produce is home grown from people’s gardens and they also bring plants to sell. We’ve had a good response from locals to the shop – they says it saves them traveling …” The business has quickly grown, now welcoming new customers every week in store and via the delivery of veg, salad and fruit boxes. There are already talks of expansion and development, starting with fridges for dairy produce and bread to seasonal hampers and after school children’s activities. Filwood Snax is at 47 Filwood Broadway. Telephone: 07591 968155. KWL Fruit and Veg is at 25 Filwood Broadway Telephone: 07791305753. Read the full story at www.knowlewest.co.uk behalf of Knightstone Housing Association and consists of 71 new houses and apartments. Knightstone Housing Association is holding a naming competition for the road name of the new development. All suggestions should be consistent with the Devon theme for the area and all entries should be emailed to robin.potter@kier.co.uk by 31st July 2014. Kier Living has commissioned a fly-over of the site prior to any work starting. You can see the video on YouTube (www.youtube.com) Search ‘Torpoint April Vid’.
