Opportunities for Filwood...

By Nick Harland, Bristol City Council

Rachel Clarke Last month saw the first Opportunities Fayre for Filwood, when local organisations came together to organise a three-day event where people could meet education and training providers, voluntary sector organisations and potential employers. Over 40 organisations came along and there was a great atmosphere - as I hope you can see from the photo special on p.6! A big thank you to Filwood Community Centre for hosting and the organising team for all of their hard work: I hope those of you who came found it helpful and encouraging. Keeping opportunities in mind, Knowle West Future - the shortened title of the Knowle West Area Neighbourhood Development Forum - will soon be organising a series of events. Take a look at page 4 for more details about how you can influence the decisions that affect our area. This issue also contains updates on the status of the Filwood Green Business Park and the budget proposals affecting Hengrove Park. Other highlights this issue include a sneak peak at the new nursery at the Inns Court Centre (p.2), an interview with the new supervisor of Filwood Library (p.5) and details of an online social network specifically for Knowle West (p.7).

Children planting trees at Newquay Road playground. Photo and cover photo by Knowle West Media Centre.

Branching out… Children, parents and staff from Ilminster Avenue Specialist Nursery School and Children’s Centre enjoyed a trip out to Newquay Road playground to take part in tree planting in March. They were excited to be putting on their wellies and going on an adventure. One of the children, Cydney, made a connection to her own garden, saying: “I got flowers in my garden”. She said: “I planted a tree apple. It rained and then it comed out and there was apples on there. I will play with the tree and I will pick apples off.”

The presence of noisy diggers, hard hats and hi vis vests marked the official start of construction on Filwood Green Business Park on March 7th, as Mayor of Bristol George Ferguson led a turf-cutting ceremony attended by several local residents. One of those residents was Ken Jones, part of Knowle West Futures, who was invited to give a speech at the event to mark the local involvement in the early planning stages of the business park. With much of the ground now cleared onsite, the exciting new development for Knowle West is due to be open for business in February 2015. An Enterprise Support Service has also been launched, offering advice and workshops to encourage budding entrepreneurs in the area to take up space in the business park. If you’re interested, contact Blue Orchid on 0117 370 3134 or visit www.blueorchid.co.uk

The trees were planted as part of the TreePips project, which aims to give every primary school aged child in Bristol the opportunity to be involved in planting a tree, resulting in over 36,000 new trees in Bristol. Care home redevelopment gets underway By Julie Tebbs, Curo Group

Free healthy cookery course for Knowle West By Community Reporter Mason Bean A free cookery course will be starting at Inns Court in May to teach local people using the Food Plus Centre to cook healthy meals within a budget. Run by the Matthew Tree Project (TMTP), the Cook Smart, Eat Well course has been funded by a £9,960 grant from Santander and will run at one of six different centres across Bristol every month. Mark Goodway, Director and founder of TMTP said: “… We know that a healthy diet of food is essential for overall health and happiness and therefore this course is an essential element of what is needed to help local people into a better way of life.” The eight-hour course, designed by TMTP and a qualified nutritionist, will teach core skills like cooking from scratch and stretching a daily budget. Nine people can attend one of the centres each month and it is hoped further funding will help it continue beyond 2014. For details visit www. thematthewtreeproject.org. From Zero to Hero! Local football coach Antony Morrison is fighting fit after completing an intensive fitness training programme - which gives contenders the opportunity to train for their own boxing bout. He was sponsored to take part by Broadwalk FC and a coach full of local supporters went to watch his fight, with some members of his u13’s football team even leading him into the ring. This is Antony’s story: ‘“You’re not gonna be around to see your lovely kids grow up” were the words that stuck in my head when my dad passed away in August. At 19 stone 12lb I realised he was right! When I saw how the Zero to Hero fitness programme changed people’s health, confidence and self esteem I decided to enter – but more than anything to lose the weight and make my family proud. I started their grueling 10-week training programme and met some awesome people along the way. But my biggest challenge was conquered in week eight when I jumped on the scales and weighed 15st 8lb. I lost my boxing fight on points but anyone who knows me

The No Public Drinking Zone: one year on

Community Safety www.knowlewest.co.uk

New police constables out on the beat By Pc Tony Cowley Things are changing on the Filwood Neighbourhood Policing Team – with two new Beat Managers joining the team in recent months. The team consist of two Police Constables and four established Police Community Support Officers who are all dedicated to keeping Filwood safe and reducing crime and anti-social behaviour. The new Police Beat Managers are Pc Tony Cowley and Pc Paul Newell, who both join the team at Broadbury Road Police Station. Pc Cowley and Pc Newell lead an established and committed team of PCSOs: PCSO Simon Rudge, PCSO Siful Ullah, PCSO Lindsey Aldington and PCSO Liam Perkins. Pc Cowley said: “The Filwood team are a dedicated group who are happy to speak to anyone, about anything. When local people see us out in the community, please do not hesitate to stop us and talk to us. We want to hear the views and voices of our community, so we know what affects you the most, and make things happen to make the community feel safe and be safe.” Pc Newell added: “We are the local Policing Team, and we are here to help the Filwood community. We hold a Beat Surgery every Tuesday between 11am-1pm, and encourage the community to come by and see us.” The Filwood Beat Team will be supporting the Filwood Gets Fit campaign and will be taking part by getting out on cycles during the week of action, and may even take part in some of the events with the community. If you have any community policing issues you wish to raise with the Beat Team, please contact the team on 101, or visit the Avon and Somerset Police website at www.avonandsomerset.police.uk.

1st April 2014 marked one year since the Filwood No Public Drinking Zone came into force in parts of Knowle West. It’s helping to reduce the effects of street drinking in the area: so far Police have stopped drinkers on a number of occasions and have only had to arrest two people. Local residents had told us street drinking was a problem for the neighbourhood. Officers from Bristol City Council and the local Police carried out some problem solving to deal with the issue - as part of this the zone was setup. It means that anyone in the zone is not allowed to drink alcohol in a public area at any time of the day. If someone is found to be drinking and does not comply with an officer when asked to surrender or dispose of the drink, they can be arrested. For more information visit www.bristol.gov.uk/filwoodnpdz Thank you to everyone who has reported street drinking. This zone works because of the continued efforts of local people to tell the local police, who are committed to dealing with this issue, when it’s happening. To report it in an emergency call 999. In a non-emergency please call 101 visit www.avonandsomerset.police.uk

Racist graffiti in the area

Community Speed Watch

You may have noticed some offensive racist graffiti recently. A number of people have spotted it and have reported it to the Police who have been monitoring the situation closely. If you have any information about this it’s important to let your local Police know. Normally you would report it straight to Bristol City Council for removal (by calling 0117 922 2100 or by going online: www.bristol.gov.uk/ graffiti) but in this case please report it first to the Police by calling 101, whether you see someone in the act or whether it’s already happened. If you or someone you know has been a victim of Hate Crime you can get support from Bristol Hate Crime services by calling SARI on 0800 171 2272.

Your local Police are looking for volunteers to carry out Community Speed Watch in the local area. Volunteers will be part of a group who monitor the speed of motorists in their area. Volunteers will need to attend a training session and Community Speed Watch groups will receive their own kit and will be supported by Avon and Somerset Police and Bristol City Council. If you are interested and would like more information, please email brett. worthington@avonandsomerset. pnn.police.uk or call 101 and ask to speak to PC Brett Worthington.

Filwood Gets Fit www.knowlewest.co.uk

What’s it all about? Filwood Gets Fit is a fun community festival that will support us all to become more active, whatever our age and ability. From 7th – 12th July we’ll be celebrating the active groups, clubs and events that already exist in our area – and organizing some special activities too… There will be an opening event on Monday 7th July on the Novers steps (at the back of Knowle West Health Park) and a closing ceremony on Saturday 12th July to coincide with the annual summer fayre at Filwood Community Centre. Throughout the week many sports teams, walking clubs and children’s groups will be holding extra ‘taster’ sessions. Many sessions will be free and a full programme will be released nearer the time. Lots of local organisations are taking part, including Knowle West Health Park, The Park, Knowle West Media Centre, Filwood Community Centre, LinkAge and more. Why should Filwood Get Fit? Our physical health and mental wellbeing can have a big impact on our quality of life. According to the Council’s latest Quality of Life Survey (2012), levels of physical activity in the Filwood ward are lower than the city average and the number of households with a smoker are higher than the city average. We want to help to change that for the better. Filwood Gets Fit is just the start – we hope that by doing something active – from ‘low-impact’ activities like gardening or walking to organised sport or cycling – we’ll all feel healthier and happier. Who’s involved? The event is being organised and coordinated by Knowle West Together, a group of local organisations who are working together to improve our area. Children from local primary schools have created designs for a Filwood Gets Fit logo, which will be used to promote the week. We received 55 designs and the three below were shortlisted. Congratulations to the designers: Ellis, Sophie and Courtney from Ilminster Avenue E-Act Academy! Look out for the final logo around the area over the next few months – it will include elements from these three designs.

Where can I find out more? The full programme of events will be posted on the Knowledge Online (www. knowlewest.co.uk) and distributed to venues, schools and organisations across the area. For more details – or to get involved with your group or organisation – contact Anita Pearce (anita.pearce@bristol.gov.uk or 0117 908 4248) or Rachel Clarke (rachel.clarke@kwmc.org.uk or 0117 353 4609).

Marathon runner raises thousands for charity A Knowle West marathon enthusiast has raised over two thousand pounds for charity by running the London Marathon. Chris Copeland was sponsored by friends and colleagues to compete in the annual event on 13th April – and ran the 26.5 mile course in three hours, 43 minutes and two seconds. He is still counting the sponsorship pledged but estimates he has raised just over £2,000 for the breast cancer campaign. Chris (54) has been featured in the Knowledge in previous years for his fundraising efforts. He said: ‘I like going out running and keeping fit – and I’d like to thank everyone who donated’. He has been running since 2006 and has completed two London Marathons and eight Bristol Half Marathons, as well as competing in the Bristol 10k twice. He trains five times a week and is set to run the 2014 Bristol 10k on 11th May.

Being a mum: now and then By Pippa Robinson In the last issue of the Knowledge we asked for families with three or more generations of women to get in touch if they were interested in having photographic portraits created as part of the Mother in the Mother project - and three local families are now working with us! 40 mums, including women from Knowle and Bedminster, also attended a Celebration of Motherhood event back in March.

6

Do you have strong women in your family? Does the way you were brought up affect the way you mother your own children? Do you find yourself doing things similarly, or differently, from your mum? Mother in the Mother is an exploration of the relationships between women, their mothers and their children and we’d love to hear your story. Tell it to us online at www. motherinthemother.co.uk/your-story. Your story will feed into an exhibition about motherhood showing at Knowle West Media Centre and Southmead Hospital next year. @NShopLocalBris: #Pop-up markets coming to Hengrove, Barton Hill and Knowle West in May, seerealeconomy.co.uk

KWMC goes national! Back in March, we created a series of photographic portraits to mark International Women’s Day 2014. Female staff, visitors and young women created giant placards to illustrate facts, hopes and aspirations - and why they believe it’s important to support young women. Photos posted on the Tumblr blog www.womenofkwmc.tumblr. com were shared around the world over 21,000 times. In early May, a prime-time political discussion show was broadcast to the nation - live from Knowle West. Our exhibition studio was packed as over 100 people joined us for the recording of Any Questions? – which has been running on BBC Radio 4 since 1948. Every week the show visits a different area of the country and a panel of four speakers answers questions posed by the audience.

Coming up… The South West Graduate: Photography Prize Exhibition open from 28th May, 10am-4pm on weekdays. This new show features the best emerging photography talent from the region. At the preview evening on 28th May Nicholas White will share material from his new commission as winner of the South West Graduate Photography Prize (SWGPP): “Five Thousand Island Forest”, a landscape exploration of Knowle West. Film Programme: Monthly from 1st May. The South Bristol Workers Forum are hosting a series of films at KWMC as part of their Spring / Summer season of film. The documentary ‘The Shock Doctrine’ will be shown on Thursday 29th May, 7pm. All are welcome. To find out more about using our spaces for your event visit visit our website.

Capturing a year in the life of the Northern Slopes Over the last year, we’ve been supporting community groups to photograph the Northern Slopes – three areas of green space spread across Knowle West. Whether basking in sunshine or enduring the mud and rain, the Slopes were captured across the seasons as part of the Wild City project. Earlier this year we asked artist Synnove Fredericks to create new artworks using images and materials gathered during the project. Synnove cut and arranged the photographs to create three-dimensional scenes of different parts of the Slopes – then housed them in wooden bird boxes and other ‘cabinets of curiosity’. Len Wyatt from the Northern Slopes Initiative (NSI), commented: “We were really impressed at what Synnove did with the photos in the boxes. The idea of overlaying cut outs of photos to make people look differently at the Slopes really impressed us, as it gave a new dimension (literally) to what can be done to make people try and appreciate the area we live in.” On Thursday 15th May the exhibition will head out into the great outdoors, with a rambling exploration and celebration of these sometimes overlooked green spaces. Meet at 5.15pm at Knowle West Media Centre, Leinster Avenue.

We hope it will be a place where you can easily share what you’re up to with an online network of other local people. Whatever your job, activity or hobby, you can share tips, photos and inspiration with others. You can also join groups and keep up to date with what like-minded people are creating. Lots of residents and local organisations are already using MyKW: posting photographs of the things they’re doing in the community and interacting with each other.

If you would like to get involved – as a resident or on behalf of an organisation or group – you can receive free training. Please contact Jen on 0117 903 0444 or jen.rolfe@kwmc.org.uk MyKW has been cleverly designed to be very simple to use – for people of all ages and abilities.

Bristol to Botswana

Youth Moves have been supported by The Southern COOP and The People’s Health Lottery to develop our latest project called Urban Escape. The project has 10 young people from both our 8-12 and 13-19 age groups and they have recently been getting stuck into lots of fun, hands-on, creative nature- related activities at Knowle West Health Association’s (KWHA) Springfield Allotment site. This summer they will be building a roundhouse on a plot of land next to the KWHA allotment so not only can they take ownership of the activities we get involved with from week to week, they can physically build the club where we will be based! On 1st June both of the Urban Escape groups will be holding a Big Lunch / project launch at the allotments and would welcome any Springfield allotment holders and local residents to come along, enjoy the FUN and get to know their neighbours! This summer we are sending two people to Botswana to with the Bristol City Football in the Community Department to experience the lifestyle and support projects in this African country. James Maby is a Youth Moves staff member who lives locally and came through our project as an apprentice many years ago, and he will be joined by Levi Hodge who has been working with us for a number of years and puts in a huge amount of volunteering hours, particularly with our Youth Opinions project. Both lads are currently fundraising for their trip – if you want to know more or are interested in supporting them then please have a look at their Just Giving Pages:

Coming soon to The Park! Watch this space for more details.
