News & Events Local News Filwood Broadway plan agreed by Council & community The Project Team, Bristol City Council

K

nowledge readers will know that last autumn the Council started working with residents, business and developers, to produce plans to regenerate Filwood Broadway. The Council’s Cabinet has recently agreed the ‘Filwood Broadway Framework’ document, which outlines the plan for the Broadway. The plan has also been endorsed locally by Community In Partnership. The plan identifies six priority projects designed to bring about the following vision, which

has been agreed with local people: “The Broadway to fulfil its role as the busy, fun and welcoming heart of Filwood. It will be a place for local people to be proud of.” The plan includes new housing and community facilities, improved public areas and range of shops, to make it a successful place for local people. Critical to the success will be attracting a decent sized supermarket, long lacking in the area. The Council will soon be starting a tender process to secure a supermarket operator.

Football Broadwalk FC move to The Pavilion andrew Williams

B

roadwalk F.C. was formed in 1998 by local men Andy Price, Paul Elvins, and Mike and Ian Alden. The club started off playing their games at ‘The Jungle’, Salcombe Road. Since then Broadwalk has grown in strength and now has teams that range from under 8’s through to under 18’s, plus adult teams. Also, Broadwalk started a new Ladies team and a Disability team this season. They gained their first premises

at The Park, Daventry Road, where they stayed for 3 years. Through their development plan and with support from Somerset F.A., they have now moved to The Pavilion, Filwood Playing Fields, Creswicke Road. The club now boast over 200 members and have formed a fundraising committee with help and support from parents. Through the hard work and commitment of Secretary Andy Williams and previous chair Mike Alden the club has won

Cup victory for Broad Plain House FC graham pring, chairman of Broad plain house fc

T

he Broad Plain House A Team won the 2011-2012 Jack Jenkins cup beating Long Ashton A Team 1-0 at Yate Town FC ground. In a very competitive game, Broad Plain House went ahead after ten minutes through a well taken goal from 16 year old Wade Gwyther. Despite dominating the first half, Broad Plain House (BPH)

could not increase their lead. In the second half Long Ashton improved considerably and only stout defending from veterans Mark Read and Andy Barton kept Long Ashton at bay. The BPH team put in a really great performance to enable captain Jerry Hartrey to lift the trophy for a delighted manager Ronnie Carroll.

‘The Charter Standard Community Club Award’ also ‘The F.A. Community Club Award’. The Trustees of Filwood Playing Fields fully supported and warmly welcomed Broadwalk F.C. moving into The Pavilion: it is a wonderful community asset with great potential. New members are always welcomed. For further information contact Andrew Williams on 07980 432697.

Children’s teams update Anthony Morrison & Neil Critchley ver the last two seasons Broadwalk Under 11s have made it to two Cup Finals. Last season they won the League and Cup without losing a single game. They are playing in a higher league this season, after promotion, and are currently top with one game left to play. Broadwalk Under 12s started the season with a 7 - 1 win over Lawrence Weston Colts, followed by a 3 - 1 win over newly promoted Nicholas Wanderers. In the quarter final they played Bristol Central at Eastville Park. The game was very close and ended with a 4 - 3 victory for Broadwalk, after extra time was played. This sent them into the semi final tie against Bromley Heath, a well-established team in their division. Broadwalk came through this game as comfortable 5 - 0 victors.

n Thursday 5th April over 100 parents and children attended a morning of Easter crafts at Ilminster Avenue Specialist Children’s Centre. While the children enjoyed making bonnets, little pom pom animals and cards, parents could look at displays and talk to representatives from the Family Information Service, the new Hengrove Leisure Centre and the Family Action

programme. The highlight of the morning was singing Easter songs and, of course, an Easter egg hunt through the garden. Local voices ‘Bedminster College sale stalled’ david parkes

P

lans by the Homes and Communities Agency and the Council to sell off the Marksbury Road College and the adjoining Northern Slopes have taken a step back with the announcement that they are reviewing the potential for a school on the site. This has been one of the objectives of the campaign group BS3 campus who have been campaigning that the site should not just be sold off to the highest bidder for housing and have produced their own “sustainable community” vision for this site. For more details see www.bs3campus.org.uk The College is currently occupied by Artspace who offer a range of activities and facilities for local art and community groups including the Campus skate-park. The College is intending to hold a BIG Green Lunch at the site on June 16th to link with Bristol’s Big Green Week and are encouraging local people to get involved. Contact Aedon Grieve on 07403 431700.

The Knowledge asked Bristol City Council and the landowners to respond to the article:

Bedminster College site: tender process update the site landowners

T

he landowners regard the opportunity to develop a new school on the site as potentially a very positive development. As a result, they have extended the current tender process to allow time for the feasibility of this new proposal to be considered. In consultation with the local community the landowners have always said that any development of the site will include an element of employment and / or community space as well as new homes. This commitment is set out in the tender documentation that has been issued to all parties who have registered their interest in the site. If the feasibility is successful, the new school will be delivered separately by Bristol City Council on part of the site.

We support MACA’s views on the College building.” Len Wyatt, NSI “Marksbury Area Community Association (MACA) wish to see the College building retained for community use for employment, education and skills training.
