Community In Partnership Destination: Knowle West from rachel clarke, knowledge editor

I

’ve been really excited to see more people from other parts of Bristol visiting our area over the last few months: coming to events and finding out more about our organisations, projects and, of course, our lovely people! I’m particularly looking forward to the ‘Pride of Place’ exhibition, at the M Shed museum in central Bristol, which celebrates inspiring projects from across the city. Our exhibits will show thousands of visitors that we live and work in a place to be proud of! The newly-launched public art strategy for Knowle West also attracted the interest of people from across Bristol. It contains 12 “instructions”, or themes, that will influence the kind of arts projects that will happen here. It was brilliant to hear people sharing their thoughts at the launch, so this issue our reporters have been asking: what does “art” mean to you? See page 6 for more details. As always, we’d love to hear from you. To contact your editors e-mail rachel.clarke@kwmc.org.uk or call 0117 903 0444.

Knowle West Regeneration Plan Latest news: Mass demolition at Inns Court ruled out and Filwood to kick-start the plan words by The Knowle West Project Team, Bristol City Council

K

nowledge readers will know consultation on Regeneration Plans last year proposed redevelopment of Inns Court as an option. Since proposals were considered too disruptive to local residents, we have ruled out mass demolition in Inns Court. We will soon consult with as many interested people as possible on plans to regenerate Filwood Broadway as a thriving shopping hub. Plans will include provision for a new supermarket, a range of new shops and services for local people. We will work to ensure local people

can be involved in developing these plans. Filwood Broadway plans will be consulted upon later in the summer, alongside the Homes and Communities Agency’s (HCA’s) proposals for Filwood Park. The HCA will involve local people in developing plans that will include a high quality park and mixeduse development, creating a new gateway into Knowle West. We will continue to work on the overall plan for Knowle West during 2011. For updates visit www.bristol.gov.uk/kwrf.

ever mind Spring fever, it seems that dance fever has been sweeping the area this season... In June the drama group, based at Filwood Community Centre, performed a variety of songs and dances as part of their show ‘A Night at the Musicals’ (see cover photo). The Community Centre also teamed up with Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) and the Haiti Kids Kino Project to present a free

film screening of “Grease”. Over 50 people came to the Community Centre to relive the summer nights of this classic musical starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. “We’ve got the talent, we’ve got the skills” words by university of local knowledge team

T

his June, residents of all ages came together to celebrate the unique wisdom of Knowle West and meet others who had shared their stories with the University of Local Knowledge (ULK). Over 800 short films have been made so far: ‘Getting married at 85’, ‘How to Jerk dance’ and ‘Being a clairvoyant’ to name a few. Contributors filled the studio at Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) when a selection of the films were screened, after which they searched the archive and found their own films. A series of ‘Big Chats’ were held at Fur & Feathers pet shop, re:store, the KWMC car park and the living room of a local house. These filmed

events brought together local experts and university academics, to discuss issues of mutual interest: horse welfare, classic cars, grandparent carers and being excluded from education. Paige Leonard (15) said: “I’m interested in the Big Chat because I care about what goes on in the local community and I love horses…I think it’s good to meet other horse lovers and learn a thing or two.” ULK has been developed by KWMC with artist Suzanne Lacy, Arnolfini and the University of Bristol, supported by the University of the West of England, BBC and Bristol City Council. DCC Beckley stressed the importance of communities working together and encouraged NHW Co-ordinators present to consider enrolling as volunteers, to work at local police stations. Kate Daisley urged schemes to register on

It’s been a FABulous time for Sue and John Words by sue mackinnon

A

fter three years of running a Knowle West sewing circle and campaign groupn - Sue Dalton and John Stinchcombe will be packing up their sewing machines for good. Team FAB (Fight Against Bags) has become a household name, selling bags made from recycled material at dozens of events. But now, due to ill health, Sue will be giving up the group. Team FAB began as one of four community campaigns that came from a Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) environmental project called ‘Carbon Makeover.’ A group

started meeting regularly to sew the cloth bags and mountains of material was donated to the cause. Now with nearly 1,000 bags made, Sue and John hope the sewing circle will continue. Sue says: “It was good for those who were isolated; they could just sit and sew and have a cup of tea. It did give me a new lease of life and increase my confidence.” There is hope the reins of Team FAB might be taken up by an arts and crafts group starting at Knowle West Health Park. ummer - as long as we have a dry St Swithin’s day (July 15th), the weather should be looking up now. In which case, you should be concentrating on giving your vegetable crops a good soaking at least once a week; little and often is not the way to go. Salads should be ready to harvest in the next few weeks, along with early crops like Broad beans. It’s not too late to sow Sweetcorn and Runner beans, and Summer salads can continue to be sown until September or a mild October. It’s time to think about bedding plants for colourful autumn borders, hanging baskets and pots. Not to mention taking a look at bulb catalogues to plan for Spring 2012. It’s also a great time to swot up on pruning: late autumn / early winter is a good time to prune shrubs, fruit bushes and top fruit trees (with the exception of plums). Happy gardening!

fter providing local people with a veg box for 18 weeks this year, the Edible Landscapes Movement (ELM) has been looking at how everyone involved in food growing, cooking, beekeeping, and other related activities in Knowle West can support each other. The group, whose working title is ‘Knowle West Food Hub’, have many ideas but their first shared project is making bee hives out of old, disused school gym horses! They’re also looking at ways of using mobile phone technology and creative media to share what they’re doing

hat is public art? Who decides where it happens or where it’s placed? How is it relevant to our community? These are just some of the questions explored in “The Manual: A Public Art Strategy for Knowle West”, which was launched at Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) in May. The Manual contains 12 ‘instructions’, or themes, that will influence the kind of arts projects that will happen in the area. These include: ‘tell a story of Knowle West’, ‘encourage the use of green space’, ‘influence change’ and ‘connect Knowle West, Bristol and beyond’. At the launch, people who live or work in Knowle West, including Pat Filer, Denise Britt, Steve Belgium, Makala Campbell, Bob Fisher, Sandra Manson, Lyn Caple and James Wall, shared their thoughts on how the instructions could be realised. popular local music programme has received a donation of nearly £700. Young people from Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) were presented with a cheque for £674.45 by Chris Sharp, owner of gig venue The Fleece. The money was rasied when The Fleece put three pairs of tickets to a sold-out performance by Erasure up for auction on the Ebay website. The donation will be used

Celebrating success! ‘Outstanding’ report for local specialist nursery words by linda tanner

I

lminster Avenue Specialist Nursery School is celebrating after being rated outstanding by Ofsted for a second time. Inspectors said the school had kept up its superb provision as it had expanded and developed the services it provides for children and their families. The Ofsted visit came just three days after acting headteacher Sheila Weir took over from retiring head Pat Rogers. Their report highlighted the nurturing and harmonious atmosphere and said children’s behaviour was outstanding, with excellent attitudes towards learning. The inspectors commented: “the quality of care, guidance and support

is exceptionally high”. Acting head Sheila Weir said: “We were pleased to be judged outstanding again, especially as the bar has been raised since the last time we were inspected. We have tremendous support from our parents. They are overwhelmingly positive.” In the past year, the nursery has merged with the former Footprints Children’s Centre to provide Bristol’s first specialist children’s centre. For more information visit www.ilminsterchildren.co.uk or call 0117 903 0255 (Nursery School site) or 0117 903 9781 (Children’s Centre).

Positive Futures get the Gold Standard! Words by alistair dale, positive futures

T

he local Positive Futures project has been recognised nationally by achieving a Gold rating for their annual report. Positive Futures is part of the Youth Moves programme for young people aged 10-19 in the area. Every year the programme is measured against a number of areas, including the number of

young people it has worked with, the quality of its programmes and the outcomes it produces. The independent report stated that “the project has helped to reduce anti-social behaviour and promote community cohesion”, and “they present strong evidence to show how they make a tangible difference to their community”.

Alistair Dale, Project Manager said: “This rating recognises all the hard work that the team carry out with young people across the community, in schools, youth clubs and targeted programmes. It also recognises the creative and innovative approaches taken to working with these groups, the involvement of the young people in the programmes plus the strength of our partnership working.” For more information contact Alistair Dale on 0117 903 9805.

Health & Wellbeing Domestic Abuse: there’s no excuse! words by safer bristol

A

recent survey has shown that over 50% of people living in Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill would turn to their friends and family first if they were experiencing abuse in a relationship. So would you know what to do if someone you cared about was being abused in his or her relationship? The following advice might help you: • Take the person seriously and believe what they say. • Respect their wishes at all times. Ask them what they want. • Give them time to discuss their feelings and needs at their own pace. • Stress that they are not responsible for the abuse and that they are not alone. Emphasise that choosing not to leave does not make them responsible for further abuse. • Find out if they need medical help. • Assist them in making contact with agencies who may be able to help. • Do not push them to do anything they are not ready

to do. They are probably the best judge of what the best way forward is and what action is safe. • Assure them of your confidentiality unless there are child protection issues, which must be reported. • Check whether it is safe to contact them and what the safest way is of keeping in touch. Remember some people feel able to confide in a friend, others do not - if you think that your friend might be in a violent or abusive relationship, it’s okay to ask directly. For help and advice call the Bristol Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0800 6949 999 or visit www.bdaf.org.uk If you do not want to get involved directly but suspect someone is suffering from Domestic Violence, you can call the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. You will not need to give your name and your call cannot be traced.

ollowing complaints from residents who attended the last Filwood Neighbourhood Forum meeting, Bristol City Council and the Police are joining forces for a week of action to tackle dog fouling in Filwood. Enforcement officers from Bristol City Council and local PCSOs will be out and about in Filwood targeting the streets where residents have told us there is a problem with dog fouling. Knowing someone you care about is using drugs and alcohol to cope can be devastating to loved ones. Concerned others often display psychological and physical stress symptoms such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, poor concentration, anger, teeth clenching, back pain, stomach cramps and many more. These symptoms often impact other family members and give rise to a general feeling of powerlessness for all concerned.
