ur spring edition shows just how much local people are doing in the community – and what they have achieved. The Small Grants event in January at Novers Community Centre where local groups spoke about their work was extremely uplifting. It took a lot of courage to stand up on that stage and pitch for funds (page 3). There are many individuals and groups working hard behind the scenes to improve the area – and in this issue we see Skemer and Gracie Barra Martial Arts being awarded for their efforts (page 6). Local gardener Don Jones has also been recognised for ‘making Knowle West beautiful’ and will be featuring in an exhibition at M Shed for the next four years (page 6). Knowle Wester and England rugby player Ellis Genge has just been picked as an Ambassador for Youth Moves. He will be sure to inspire other young people to work hard and follow their dreams (page 3). I’ve always enjoyed working in this area and been inspired myself by the dedication so many local people show. The Knowledge has been a way of letting people know all the positive things going on - and although it is under threat, we will continue to keep you informed via the website www.knowlewest. co.uk and hopefuly another form of printed newsletter.

Bristol declares “ecological emergency” Bristol has become the first major city in the UK to declare an ecological emergency in response to increasing threats to wildlife and ecosystems. The announcement was made by Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees and Chief Executive of Avon and Wildlife Trust, Ian Barrett, in February.

Visit the Northern Slopes Avon Wildlife Trust is looking for local groups who would like to find out more about the Northern Slopes – and visit the nature reserve with them. They also want to hear from people and groups who already use the Slopes to share their stories and say what they would like to see there. The charity will be running activities and events in the area over the next three

Year of Can Do 2020 By Josephine Gyasi This is the Year of Can Do - celebrating what Bristol residents can achieve from volunteering and creating positive change to simple acts of kindness. During March, a two-week festival will be inspiring people to get involved in activities, events and training opportunities across the city. An online volunteering platform exclusive to Bristol has just been re-launched connecting people with opportunities within local communities.

Free drama workshops Knowle West residents are being invited to take part in free drama workshops leading to a performance - to help create change in their neighbourhood. The sessions are also a chance to celebrate what local people like about their area.

The Noise 2020 The Noise will be back in Knowle West in May – a huge volunteering event run by Bristol churches. People will be working on projects across the city - from digging gardens and painting to litter picking and running free community events. The Noise will be take place from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 May, with full details available in April. Keep an eye on the website www.thenoise.org.uk and social media.

This builds on the declaration of a climate emergency in 2018 and follows concerns about a “worrying decline” in numbers and diversity of wildlife in the city. News Local groups successfully pitch for funding

Fourteen local groups are celebrating receiving hundreds of pounds in grant funding – after pitching their ideas at a public event at the end of January. The grants evening at Novers Community Centre was organised by Filwood Fantastic, offering funding of up to £500, in partnership with Knowle West Alliance – giving pots of £100. For the £500 projects – ideas ranged from a sign made from rubbish collected by Inns Court Residents Group to a twice-weekly roller disco at Inns Court Community and Family Centre, put forward by resident Craig Richards. Grants for £100 projects included a badge maker for dyslexic organisation, Brislexic, as well as kit and equipment for The Park Knowle Football Club Women's Team.

Anita Pearce (left) and Margaret Rawlings who pitched for groups at Eagle House.

Rising High Baking Group, which meets at Inns Court Centre, pitched for three projects: community baking workshops, storage and a member’s trip. Merv Trowbridge who presented the idea for the workshops said: “We’re already up and running but if we’re going to take on training courses for adults and children in groups we need to get the resources …” Silver Screen over 50s film Club and Knit and Natter which both help tackle social isolation also benefited from Alliance Grants. Silver Screen for transport and a trip and the knitting group for equipment and publicity. Chair of the Alliance, Heather Williams said: “It’s not about the money it’s about showcasing the good things happening in the community… "I hope you go away with a sense of pride about living in Filwood and Knowle.” For the full story and list of grants visit www.knowlewest.co.uk

ngland rugby player Ellis Genge has helped put Knowle West on the map after hitting the headlines for scoring England’s winning try against Scotland in February. The 25-year-old rugby prop who grew up in the area is justly proud of his roots and is providing a beacon of hope for other young would-be sports professionals. Now he has just agreed to be an ambassador for Youth Moves based at The Park – a charity which works with young people aged eight to 25 years old and engages in community projects and social action. Ellis told The Knowledge he wanted to inspire other young people and said of his sporting journey: “It shows no matter what your limitations are, there’s an opportunity to exceed expectations of others.”

New prescription service at Merrywood Merrywood is the first Bristol practice to set up a new system for prescription ordering. Patients are no longer able to request medication using a third party, such as a chemist, but now have to drop their prescription request to the practice or order online. Merrywood Practice, based in Downton Road, has said it is for patient safety and to avoid wastage. It also saves chemists a lot of time. But some older people are concerned about having to walk to the surgery instead of popping in to their local chemist, and are not able to order online. Resident Ann Smith 80 said: “It’s hard for people to get up there and there are some people who live on their own and can’t get out. “Not everyone has family and some people don’t like asking neighbours or anyone to do things for them…”

Day

International Women’s

By Community Reporter Charlie Watts Two celebrations marking International Women’s Day are taking place in Knowle West. The first on Wednesday 4 March will be held at Filwood Community Centre with a raft of activities including talks, treatments and masterclasses.

@Mark_Brain The only try in England's 13-6 win over Scotland was scored by Ellis Genge from Knowle West. #Bristol #sixnations2020 @MarvinJRees @karinsmyth @BristolBears

He said his role would be “supporting young people if and when they need.” Alistair Dale from Youth Moves said: “Ellis is a great fit for Youth Moves as an ambassador as he is a local Knowle West lad, he has grown up in the community, had to overcome challenges and hardship along the way but is now recognised on the national stage, which has been similar to own our journey as a charity…” Ann said she had been contacted by the practice and they were going to show her how to order on her phone. Practice Manager Vicki Staatz said: “… The reason we no longer allow chemists to order on a patient’s behalf is because there is so much wasted medicine – also it is a safety thing, with a third person in the process the risk increases…” She said if some elderly people were struggling they could have “the online requesting” set up on a friend or relative’s phone. She added: “If someone is really stuck and has no help whatsoever… they can contact the practice and we can have a chat and we normally find a solution.”

It’s being organised by Centre Manager June McNeill. She said: “The day will be a celebration of all the women in and around the area – and it’ll also be a chance for ladies to get pampered and gain informaSite visit at the Street Cleansing Depot. tion.” Eagle House Wednesday Club in Newquay Road is also holding an event on 11 March. The day will include beauty treatments, creative activities such as knitting and gardening as well as dance classes and health information.

Knowle West Alliance News By Community Development Worker Frances Coates

It’s been a busy few months for Knowle West Alliance. We had our very successful event for the first round of Small Grants on 29 January at Novers Club - where 16 local residents/groups pitched for money for local community projects and about 60 people came to watch and vote. We were pleased to see so many people we’d spoken to at the council’s Development Consultations before Christmas. It was great to chat to local residents on the doorstep and encourage them to share their views about the new developments. At our launch event, local people told us they wanted educational play equipment in Filwood Library and we were able to get funding for this. We ran a Toy Consultation at the library in December, where residents could vote on the type of toys they’d like to see - and posted a survey on our Facebook page. Despite a low response rate, we will go ahead and buy the most popular choices. Watch this space for a special celebration event… Also look out for a Knowle West Alliance one-year anniversary event in the next couple of months! In the meantime, if you’d like to get involved, have an idea or want to chat about the local community, email frances.coates@kwalliance.co.uk, or call 0794 267 7131.

Chats about housing plans

Residents are being invited to two social events in March where they will be able to view housing plans for the area and give their ideas. The events are being organised by Knowle West Alliance and Knowle West Futures to make sure residents are fully involved in the planning process. The events are Thursday 12 March from 1-3pm and Friday 13 March from 5-7pm at Filwood Community Centre. View the plans at: www.knowlewestalliance. co.uk/housing-development-proposals/

Two shops which have opened on Filwood Broadway are helping to bring new life to the area. Dave Lewis Flooring has opened next to Filwood Hope and the Sandwich Stop by Piercings 4 U. Owner Dave Lewis has been a mobile carpet, vinyl and laminate fitter for over 30 years, with most of his clients coming from South Bristol. He felt the time had come “to set up a base, where he could display some of his products and offers.”

The Sandwich Stop is run by resident Emma Quinn who used to work in her aunt’s café in Filwood when she was young.

She says: “I helped out as a Saturday girl. I used to love going to work at the café and always imagined one of my own. Back then I remember Filwood had a bingo hall, swimming baths, petrol station, supermarkets, bakery, butchers…” The new café offers a range of food, from sandwiches and jacket potatoes to burgers and home cooked meals, including a take away and expanding delivery service. Both businesses are pleased they’re helping to regenerate the

area, and say customer feedback has been very positive. Dave says: “If we could get occupancy in all the shops, the area will be full of foot shoppers and that will be fantastic for everyone…” Dave Lewis Flooring is open from Monday to Friday 9am-4pm, and Saturday 9am-1pm. Call 0117 9530040, or email davelewis1964@ hotmail.co.uk. The Sandwich Stop is open Monday to Saturday from 7.30-3pm, and on Thursdays until 5pm. Call 0747 188 8658. *At time of going to press a new takeaway, Pizza Plus, has also just opened on the Broadway.

Food Club at Inns Court A popular new Food Club for Knowle West families is offering cookery sessions – and also looking for volunteers to help out. The project has been running at Inns Court Community and Family Centre on Thursdays since last October. It has been set up to provide “affordable fresh and pantry food” for families with young children under five who receive free education and nursery places. But there is also availability for anyone referred by an outside agency or Family Support Worker - or for people who use the Children’s Centre. The project is a joint venture between charities Family Action, Fareshare and Feeding Bristol – in partnership with Bristol City Council. Simon Green, Food Club Support Worker from Family Action, explains: “All of the food is surplus from supermarkets and food manufacturers and would otherwise have gone to landfill… “The clubs also address aspects of Feeding Bristol’s key strategies in creating a zero hunger Bristol…” Families pay £1 for an annual membership and then £3.50 per food bag every week. The Food Club runs every Thursday from 12-3pm at Inns Court Community and Family Centre in Marshall Walk. For more information contact Simon. Starting the conversation about knife crime By PC Hannah Fletcher

K

be unwilling to talk about things they’ve seen or heard or feel that you don’t understand. There are lots of myths around knife crime too, so talking about the realities of knife crime can help bring home how serious it is. Here are some of the key facts you could share: u Most people do not carry knives. u Carrying a knife does not keep you safe. In fact you are more likely to come to serious harm when carrying a knife. u It’s illegal to carry a knife, even if it’s for someone else. u Carrying a knife could mean being arrested, going to court and ending up with a criminal record or even a prison sentence. u There isn’t a ‘safe’ place to stab someone. If a knife punctures an artery anywhere on your body you can bleed to

nife crime continues to hit the headlines, with a number of high profile cases taking place in Bristol recently. Some of these incidents have involved young people, and it may seem that carrying a knife is normal. Thankfully it’s not – in reality 99 per cent of young people don’t carry knives, and the cases you read about are usually isolated, involving people who know each other. However young people can face pressure from their peers. They may start carrying knives to feel safer or because they hear groups boasting about carrying and feel they need to do the same. But carrying a knife doesn’t keep you safe. If the people involved in recent incidents hadn’t been carrying a knife - then the situations could now be very different.

Building relationships

We are working hard to break down barriers and build relationships with young people early. In south Bristol, all primary schools now have a designated PCSO who works to build positive relationships with pupils. The Mini Police at Oasis Connaught and Greenfields continues to provide children with the opportunity to act as role models within their schools, learning how to help others and doing good work in their local community - such as litter picks and tackling speeding by educating drivers with poems. PCSO Joe Markey and the Filwood team, in conjunction with Bristol City Football Club, have also been getting muddy and testing their own fitness levels, playing football with local children with the aim of breaking down barriers and building trust. Sessions take place every Thursday (term time) from 5-6pm at Connaught primary

school Community Hub and are open to young people from any school in the area. We also take every chance to attend local scout groups, nurseries and youth groups such as Youth Moves. These visits enable our team to educate young people on what the police do, how to stay safe and most importantly to listen to concerns that young people have about their own communities. We are passionate about supporting our community to bring positive change as well as helping vulnerable people. The work of the new Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) in is an opportunity to not just respond to crime, but to look at the root causes, working with partner agencies and local projects to guide young people and divert them away from crime, towards more positive futures. We all have a part to play in dealing with this issue - which is why we are asking parents, carers and those that work with young people to start the conversation about knife crime now, offering the facts and support they need to make the right choices.

Talking about knife crime

Talking to a young person about knife crime can be tricky. They may

death within five minutes. u The impact of knife crime goes beyond the victim and the offender. It affects parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters and friends. People’s lives can be ruined forever. Talking about knife crime is difficult but by doing so you could be saving a life.

Support and advice

If you’d like more support and advice the following organisations and campaigns are a great place to start: Childline (www.childline.org.uk) has information specifically about knife crime and young people can also call the confidential helpline for advice0800 1111 The Mix (www.thmix.org.uk) has some great, straight talking advice, specifically aimed at young people already affected by knife crime You or your child can report knife crime anonymously at www.fearless. org The #Knifefree campaign (www.knifefree.co.uk) has some stories from young people who used to carry knives and now don’t. It also has lots of information about talking to and supporting young people.

Award and lease for Skemer Skemer Winters has a lot to celebrate – he’s not only won an Outstanding Community Effort Award but has just had the lease on his boxing gym renewed for ten years. His award from Mogul Minded Group was from public nominations for his work at Skemer’s Boxing Gym on Wedmore Vale, which he moved into last year after a long search for a new base.

Skemer, who runs a range of classes including anti-bullying, did not attend the ceremony but received his award last December. He says: “I can’t believe all the hard work which has been done over the years has been finally recognised. Thanks for everyone who has helped at the gym and and let's keep up the great work… the kids are our future.” The renewed lease from January will mean he finally has the security to know he can stay put for a while. Skemer adds: “It’s a lot easier because hopefully in April we can get funding and grants, because at the moment I do it all myself. We can carry on with our work keeping the kids off the streets in Knowle.” For more information, visit Facebook: Skemer’s Boxing Gym or call him on 0759 472 6905.

Martial Arts School of the Year A local martial arts school has won an acclaimed Bristol Prestige Award which recognises businesses that offer a “highquality level of service and experience”. Gracie Barra Knowle, which holds classes in Brazilian jiu jitsu for all ages at Filwood Community Centre, was told in January it had won Martial Arts School of the Year. Resident Jamie Horsman who runs the school has featured previously in The Knowledge for his achievements, alongside his daughter Frankie, a double world champion in the sport.

Knowle West gardener in exhibition

community gardener “who makes Knowle West beautiful” has been selected for a photographic exhibition which celebrates Bristolians who have made a difference. Don Jones (77), who has lived in the area for 37 years is part of You Make Bristol which launched at M Shed on Harbourside on 26 February. The display is updated every three to four years and features everyone from Olympic medal winners, musicians and models to community workers and campaigners. From nearly 200 people nominated in a public call last year – the list has been whittled down by a panel to just 40 people and groups. Don’s photo which appears in the Don’s work in Knowle West has exhibition at M Shed by Kirsty Mackay. included introducing hanging baskets to Filwood Community Centre and brightening up the garden area -“to create a wow factor”. He was also the driving force to get benches and planters to enhance Filwood Broadway in 2017, in his Boulevard project. He told The Knowledge: “This is not all about me, this is about the community, it was all their positive encouragement that gave me the faith to take the next steps. I wanted to share that with everybody…”

Tribute to two ‘lovely ladies' By Denise Britt Some very sad news that two very lovely Knowle West ladies have passed away. Floss Moulton and Georgina Baber both worked very hard for many years in our community. Floss, who was 82, was on lots of boards: He says: “I was over the moon – it's not just me, everyone has chipped in to make it what it is. “It’s the fact that we haven’t got the facilities, it’s the extra hard work and what we’re doing for the community is the reason why we won. “It keeps growing and growing and we want to continue to get more kids off the streets and do something positive.” One of the parents, Naomi Trickey says: “My son Joe has been coming for 18 months and he eats, sleeps and breathes jiu jitsu and was awarded for being the Most Valued Student of the Year.”

Knowle West Development Trust, Knowle West Health Association, the Credit Union and others. Georgina (63) was one of a group of mums that started Knowle West Against Drugs (KWADS) and she did a lot work with the youth club at Eagle House and lots more. I would like to say thank you to them both and am very proud to say that they were my friends. The community of Knowle West will miss you both. Gracie Barra Knowle runs classes on Tuesday and Friday evenings from 6-7pm for kids and teens and 7-8pm, fundamentals. For more information call 0793 980 5097. www.graciebarraknowle.co.uk

Local stories Simon’s cycling to Land’s End for charity Local resident Simon Foster will be setting off on a gruelling bike ride from Filwood Community Centre to Land’s End in June – to raise money for Cancer Research. He will be cycling 235 miles in eight days on his own - pulling a bike trailer containing his tent, sleeping bag and bike kit as well as food and essential supplies. The father of seven decided to take up the challenge after “seeing a lot of family members and friends diagnosed with or dying from cancer”. Simon (37) completed the 200 mile September Challenge for Cancer Research last year - and shaved his head for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2017. He has been preparing for this year’s fundraiser by “going to the gym and taking long bike rides through the countryside”. He says: “The difficulty depends on the wind direction and the heat – if you get a hot June it can be a very long day as there are a lot of hills and no support team.

"A worse scenario is a very wet day and you have to keep riding.” The first thing he will do when he reaches his destination is “call my seven kids and then friends and family and tell them that I have completed my challenge”. “I will feel a sense of achievement at the end – and I just want to raise as much money as I can.” Simon will be leaving Filwood Community Centre on 6 June at 10am and hopes to arrive at Land’s End at 10am on 13 June. Local champions launch karate and kickboxing club A young Knowle West couple have launched a new karate and kickboxing club at Inns Court – to “give something back to the community.” Les Downs (18) and his girlfriend Lauren Parry (20) are both blackbelts

and have won dozens of medals over the years, including a number of golds at the World Championships and British Open. They started the Bristol Sport Karate and Kickboxing Club (BSKC) at Inns Court Community and Family Centre in January – running twice-weekly sessions for children and adults. Les first took up karate at the age of 11 - scooping gold in his first competition - followed by kickboxing a year later. He explains: “My parents thought it would be a good idea to take up a sport, I was small and skinny – so they thought it would be good for me to learn self defence…” Lauren started kickboxing at 13 as “both her brothers had done it when they were younger” and karate at 16. The pair are eager to promote the benefits of the martial arts – from discipline and self control to improving mental and physical health. Les says: “…We wanted to start the club to give something backavailable to the community - tofrom make July everyone Office to rent 2019 happier and give a place for children to meet.” BSKC runs at Inns Court Centre Monday and Thursday 17 m2 evenings, with three one-hour sessions from 6-9pm for £412 month adults and children aged four a upwards. Become a Friend of Filwood Community Centre

By Suzie Davison, Friends of Filwood Officer

“Hi, I’m Suzie and I’m the new Friends of Filwood Officer at Filwood Community Centre – and it’s my job to get members for the place. Members get free access all year round to our Friends of Filwood games sessions in our sports hall – where we have ping pong, pool and table football tables as well as board games for people to play with. The sessions take place on Mondays (3.30 to 6.30pm), Thursdays (3.30 to 6.30pm) and Saturdays (9.30am to 1pm) – and are a great way of keeping the kids (and yourselves) entertained. In the summer we will also be getting crazy golf in our courtyard – which our members will get to enjoy free of cost. They will also get invited to our yearly membersonly party – the first one of which takes place later in the year and will be a great way to get involved with your community centre while getting to know new people. A bit about me: I grew up in London, then went to university in Wales where I studied Documentary Photography, and now I live in Bristol. I love photography, and so am keen to make the darkroom at the community centre a thriving space once again. My passion for working in the community, meanwhile, stems from my voluntary work with a charity called See It From Her – where I worked with vulnerable self-identifying women, exploring the use of photography as a tool of empowerment.” To find out more on Filwood Community Centre’s membership scheme, you can email Suzie at suzie.davison@filwoodcentre.org.uk

Youth Circus comes to Filwood A youth circus group has come to Filwood Community Centre – and is being held in the sports hall on Fridays from 4-5.30pm. The group, where young people can learn circus skills, has been made possible thanks to funding from the Youth Sector Support Fund (YSSF) – and is a collaboration between Street Space, Circomedia and Filwood Community Centre.

Imagination Funding

Springboard springs into action

Community In Partnership Knowle West, the group which runs Filwood Community Centre, has received £40,000 in Imagination Funding from Bristol City Council. The funding, which will be spent over the next two years, will see a makeover of the community centre reception, a walk of fame on Filwood Broadway as well as the return of the Knowle West Carnival. Contact: makala@ filwoodcentre.org.uk

Springboard has just got funding from Bristol City Council’s Bristol Impact Fund – meaning it can continue for at least another two years. The personal development programme, which helps people with their wellbeing and IT skills, takes place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (12.30 4.30pm) in the community centre’s IT suite. It’s run by Katie Bruce. She said: “This is a much-needed provision in the area, and I’m delighted that it’s not stopping any time soon.” Email Katie: katie.bruce@ filwoodcentre.org.uk or call her 07582040535 to get involved.

Youth Moves shortlisted for Bristol Young Heroes Awards

Super Hero award, and Franklyn Bateman, Rowena Brown, and Shae-Ann Hudson for the Learning Hero award. “We are particularly proud to be shortlisted as Team of the Year. Being rewarded for all the hard work the staff do throughout the year across South Bristol is very satisfying. We have won two High Sheriff awards before, so if we can add this to title to that it will

be brilliant. But to be honest we are just pleased to receive the nomination, and happy that people value what we do." The Bristol Young Heroes had a Nominee's Reception at City Hall on 3 Feb, and each nominee receives free bus travel, a Cabot Circus shopping voucher, free suit hire and hair styling, as well as a goodie bag full of epic gifts on the night. The event itself takes place on Friday 1 May at We The Curious.

Youth Moves are delighted to announce several nominations for the Bristol Young Heroes Awards. The prestigious annual event celebrates the success of young people and youth projects across the city. Now entering its seventh year, the awards see an array of famous faces in the city such as Good Morning Britain's weatherman Alex Beresford, Broadchurch actor Joe Sims, and BBC Radio Bristol's Emma Britton presenting awards throughout the evening. To see a local Knowle-based project in the running is impressive. Denise Clifford (Youth Moves Lead Youth Worker) said: "We love the Bristol Young Heroes Awards, and have attended every year since it started. To see more of our young people put forward this year is great. “We have four 16-year-olds being recognised; Elliot Carr shortlisted for the
