THANKS TO: the Newsletter Steering Group (Ann Smith, Ken Jones, Denise Britt), Neighbourhood Partnership (Andrew McLean, Val Talbod) and Knowle West Media Centre (Rachel Clarke - Editor, Bart Blazejewski Designer, Sue Mackinnon - Community Journalism). All articles express the views of individual contributors and do not necessarily represent the opinions of the Neighbourhood Management, Steering Group or KWMC.

Healthy, happy and eco-friendly Rachel Clarke You may notice some common themes running through this issue. The first is health – which you might have guessed from our cover photo! It shows the Fit & Fab group at Knowle West Health Park who recently qualified as Health Champions (p.3). Other health news includes the Filwood Gets Fit festival returning this summer (p.7) and a new cycle leader in our midst… (p.6). The second theme is happiness and respect. Page 4 provides some advice that may help if you have been affected by Hate Crime, as well as information about a forthcoming festival celebrating the diversity of Knowle West. We all have something positive to contribute to the area – and it would be great to see lots of people at the Knowle West Festival in September! Keep an eye out for more details. Finally, the photos page contains lots of fantastic examples of environmental activity in our area, including the pond at the Springfield Allotment coming to life, the cheerful goats at Andy’s Haven Nursery, and more. Don’t forget that Filwood Green Business Park opens its doors at the end of May too (p.2). Again, this issue features articles written by our community reporting team; if you’d be interested in receiving journalism and photography training please contact Sue at Knowle West Media Centre: sue@kwmc.org.uk. Filwood Green Business Park opens this Spring By Rebecca Dible The Filwood Green Business Park development will open its doors and welcome its first tenants from the beginning of May, as they take up space in the offices, workshops and studios. An official opening event will take place on Thursday 28th May, where residents and businesses from Knowle West and the surrounding areas are invited to join project stakeholders, council representatives and Bristol Mayor George Ferguson to celebrate the opening of this landmark for South Bristol. The event, taking place in May half term, will be suitable for all ages. It will include family-friendly entertainment with a ‘green’ theme, to complement the Business Park’s environmental ethos and Bristol’s year as European Green Capital. Guided tours will give local residents and businesses the chance to explore the interior of the building after 14 months of construction. We hope many local residents and businesses are able to attend and celebrate this achievement for Knowle West as a step forward in the wider regeneration of the area. Further details will be available nearer the event at www.filwoodgreen.co.uk The exterior of the Filwood Green Business Park. Image by Bristol City Council

future. With the rain continuing to fall, we headed off to the Ilminster Avenue E-ACT Academy to join in with a celebration of one hundred days of the school being open for children. Next on the agenda was a visit to the Knowle West Health Park where an open and frank discussion took place about some of the major health issues for local people. George then spent some time with the board members and staff of the Filwood Community Centre, listening to their vision. Towards the end of the visit he met with members of the local community in the hall of the Community Centre and discussed issues including the lack of shopping facilities (specifically a supermarket) in the area, public transport, local jobs and training, and the proposed changes in the political ward boundaries. Will Knowle West be any different the next time the elected Mayor visits? Let’s work together and hope for a positive future for our area. Read the full story at www.knowlewest.co.uk

A new nursery for Knowle West! By Matt Caldwell

Positive futures By Andrew McLean, Neighbourhood Partnership Coordinator George Ferguson, Bristol’s elected Mayor, visited Knowle West on Friday 13th February. The weather was wet and, yes, he had visited the neighbourhood less than two years ago - but George arrived in the area with the full gusto of a man on a mission. He arrived at 9am at Knowle DGE and was taken on a tour of the school. George spoke with teaching and support staff about the services for pupils and their plans for the

Knowle West Children’s Centre is very proud to announce that it will be opening a new nursery at Knowle West Health Park later this year! It will be in what is now known as the ‘Caretaker’s House’ which is near the entrance to the Health Park. It was previously the location for Platform 51 and has been empty for the past few months. We will be able to offer 32 places and are confident that they will be to the same outstanding standard as our settings on Leinster Avenue and Inns Court. We have been very pleased with our setting at Inns Court, which has helped us make great links with that community, and which we received an ‘Outstanding’ for in the first Ofsted visit. We are sure that the Knowle West Children’s Centre at the Health Park will be a similar success! There will be a little work involved in the coming months to make the house ready, but we are excited that we will be able to develop the inside and the garden area to make another nursery of which the community can be justifiably proud. Local arts charity supported by Bristol Grammar School By Rachel Clarke, Knowle West Media Centre Earlier this year, Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) was selected as the ‘chosen charity’ for Bristol Grammar School‘s Diamond’s House. From flower sales and sponsored swims to cake-making and concerts, staff and students from years 7-13 raised almost £1,000 to support the arts charity, which is based on Leinster Avenue. Fundraising began in October 2014 with a House Concert, where staff and pupils entertained an audience with music, comedy, drama, dance and gymnastics. This was followed by a Charity Week in March 2015, when all of the House tutor groups held cake sales and Year 10 pupil Sam did a sponsored swim! On March 17th, Bristol Grammar School celebrated its annual Charter Day at Bristol Cathedral, and each tutor group in Diamond’s House sold daffodils for the rest of the school to wear during the service. The final figure is yet to be confirmed, but the fundraising efforts of staff and pupils have raised over £930 for KWMC, an arts organisation and charity that uses arts and technologies to help people make positive changes in their lives and neighbourhoods. Seventy years after his service in the Second World War – Charles ‘Joe’ Cook has finally been presented with the esteemed Ushakov medal for service on the Russian convoys. Mr Cook, a ninety-one-year-old widower, travelled to the Russian Embassy in London in February to meet the ambassador and receive the honour for ‘one of the hardest journeys of his life’. The Ushakov Medal is a Soviet military award given to those that served on the Russian Arctic convoys, a journey that Winston Churchill himself described as “the most dangerous journey in the world.” Mr Cook – who has lived in Knowle West since the age of 13 – agrees, deeming it the “journey from hell … you didn’t get any respite.” He was just 19 when he took part in the first of three convoys. He served as a Radar Operator on the HMS Howe – where his primary duty was to intercept the German submarines and ensure they didn’t get among the convoys. But Arctic temperatures often posed a bigger threat, with Mr Cook describing the bitter cold “a far bigger enemy to us than the German submarines”. He has now received a total of ten medals for his services, including seven from the British government and three from the Russian, although he says he is “more proud of this (medal) than any other” – with only 3,000 being issued worldwide. Festival to celebrate local culture Knowle West Together is planning a community day to celebrate the diversity of our area and the different people who live here – and they’d love as many people as possible to get involved. The Knowle West Festival is planned for Saturday 12th September 2015. Anyone who would like to find out more about the festival or has ideas for activities can go along to Knowle West Health Park, Downton Road, on Thursday 21st May between 9.3011.30am. Lynn Parfitt, from Bristol City Council, is part of the organizing team. She said: “Anything you can do, no matter how big or small, would be very welcome. It might be good ideas or practical help on the day. The festival will be more fun if everyone from the area is involved.” For more details email lynn.parfitt@ bristol.gov.uk or ring on 07810 506918 / 0117 903 6978 for an informal chat. What is Knowle West Together? Knowle West Together is made up of local organisations, residents and community groups who are working together to tackle local issues and improve quality of life for everyone in the area. The group meets once a month, generally on the first Monday, at Filwood Community Centre. Since it was established in 2013, Knowle West Together has organized the Filwood Opportunities Fayre, which brought local people together with employers and training providers, and the Filwood Gets Fit festival, which encourages people to get active.

By Andrew McLean, Neighbourhood Partnership Coordinator Here in Knowle West we have a community made up of people from many different backgrounds, faiths, ages and sexual orientations. Local residents, community groups and agencies delivering services across the area have been working together to make Knowle West a great place to live. In recent months, some local people have been experiencing racist, disabilist and homophobic abuse. These are known as types of Hate Crime, where people are targeted because they are seen as being different. For example: because they are not white, because they are seen as being a Muslim, or because they are gay. If you’ve been affected by any of these Hate Crimes, then it is important this is brought to the attention of the Police so you can get the support you need. If you have committed Hate Crime against individuals, a group of people or a family, it is important for you to know that this is a criminal offence and it isn’t welcomed or tolerated in Knowle West. The Neighbourhood Partnership team cares about protecting the people who live in the area and making Knowle West a welcoming neighbourhood for all. Hate Crime hurts us all and strikes at the heart of our community. If you are a victim of a hate crime you can contact any of these organisations to report the crime and get the support you need: The Police 999 (emergencies only) 101 (non-emergencies) Visit the Police Station on Broadbury Road, BS4 1JT The Bristol Hate Crime Service (BHCS) You can report any type of hate crime including racist, faith-based, disablist, homophobic, transphobic, age or gender-based: 0800 171 2272 (freephone) Reporting online Use the anti-social behaviour, harassment and hate crime reporting form here: www.bristol.gov.uk/form/community-and-safety/anti-social-behaviourharassment-and-hate-crime-reporting-form This September there will be an outdoor community event to celebrate the diversity of Knowle West and the different communities that make up the area – the Knowle West Fest. We would love to see lots of different people getting involved.

WANTED: Resident Reps By Andrew McLean, Neighbourhood Partnership Coordinator Are you interested in volunteering a couple of hours a month to be involved in the Neighbourhood Partnership? Cuts to 36 bus service anger residents By Community Reporter Caroline Stevenson and Sue Mackinnon Angry Knowle West residents have been up in arms about changes to the 36 bus route – meaning they now have to get two buses to Hartcliffe and Withywood.

native stop on Callington Road. “However, our investigations have found it is not possible to provide a practical alternative bus stop for the superstore and we have had to accept the change as now proposed. We will continue to work closely with First to secure improvements to bus services for all local communities across the city.”

Since Sunday 29 March, bus users have only been able to take the 36 as far as Hengrove Park - and they then have to get the 75 to Withywood. They are also no longer able to travel to Tesco, Brislington, on this service. A petition on change.org protesting against the changes has collected over 400 signatures so far. Pensioner Lyn Caple (66) fought to try and keep the 89 bus in the area six years ago. She said: “It means you could be at Jarman’s for ages waiting for the 36 and then have to wait for another bus. When it’s pouring with rain and freezing, it’s not funny.” First spokesperson Karen Duffett said she accepted it was “frustrating” for people they no longer had a direct route to where they wanted to go – but the company had to address problems with the “punctuality and reliability” of the 36.

She said: “The 75 is a very frequent service, around every 20 minutes, and at the point where you have to change there is shelter. We are providing through tickets between Services 36 and 75 so no-one will be financially worse off from having to change buses.” Bristol City Council’s Director of Transport, Peter Mann said: “…We acknowledge that rerouting away from Tesco, Brislington, will not be welcomed and we did explore with First the possibility of retaining this connection by introducing an alter-

Construction begins on MetroBus development By Rob Ash

Construction has started on the MetroBus network, which will provide bus journeys from south Bristol to the city centre and north Bristol. The first services will start operating at the end of 2016. MetroBus is a form of high-capacity rapid public transport found in urban areas that uses a combination of segregated busways and bus lanes. MetroBus will connect residential areas like Filwood and Hengrove with employment areas in the north like Aztec West and Emersons Green. MetroBus will also provide journeys to the University of the West of England (UWE), the South Bristol Skills Academy in Hengrove and the City of Bristol College. MetroBus will be quicker than current bus services: MetroBus journeys from Hengrove Park to UWE will be 27 minutes quicker than existing bus services. Residents will also benefit from transport links to Bristol Airport, Weston-Super-Mare, Nailsea and Clevedon, as some of these services will also use parts of the MetroBus network. For more information visit www.travelwest.info/metrobus

Health

Working together for a healthier Filwood By Kate Cooke

“Knowle West Together” has formed a sub-group to focus on health issues in the area. Made up of local organisations, health professionals and local people, the group aims to help reduce inequalities in health. It will do this by sharing important health messages across the Filwood area and helping people to act on them. One key priority will be cancer - and how we can help people to live longer. Look out for a local campaign about spotting the signs and symptoms of cancer and what to do next. The health subgroup welcomes everyone who is interested in health in the Filwood area. The next meeting is happening on Monday 18th May, 11am, at Knowle West Health Park. For further information please contact me: Kate.cooke@bristol. gov.uk. I work as a Health Promotion Specialist in the community for Public Health and live in Filwood.

Filwood’s getting fit – and staying fit Bristol City Council’s latest Quality of Life Survey (2012) shows that levels of physical activity in Filwood are lower than the city average – so last summer Knowle West Together organised Filwood Gets Fit, a week of activities to encourage people to get active, whatever their age or ability. 82 different activities took place, including a walk across the neighbourhood that took in some of the major landmarks. Knowle West Together have decided to repeat the health and fitness festival from 6th – 10th July, with five days of classes, taster activities, walks, rides and groups to help residents of Filwood get fit and have fun. The events will be happening at venues across the area, including Knowle West Health

Park (6th July), The Park (7th July), Knowle West Media Centre (8th July), the Inns Court Centre (9th July) and the Springfield allotments (10th July). For details contact Kate Cooke: Kate.cooke@bristol.gov.uk

Full house for documentary premiere Social isolation is affecting teenagers in the UK. They are less visible on our streets than in days gone by, and health professionals in Bristol report that increasing numbers of young people aged 13-19 are socially isolated. We have spent the last six months working with young people to develop a documentary film that explores why this is happening - and what we can do about it. Last month the film, called ‘The Glowing Divide’, premiered at KWMC to a packed studio, complete with a red carpet! When conducting research for the film our team of Junior Digital Producers discovered that 71% of the teenagers they spoke to spend more than three hours online each day and 49% prefer staying in. Three young people, all aged 16, agreed to share their highs and lows on camera and The Glowing Divide follows them as they undertake a series of challenges. Can they give up social media and gaming for five days? How do they get on when they meet someone they don’t know? Unlike traditional documentaries, the film is interactive: you can access a collection of short film clips online and choose the order you want to view them. After watching the documentary, we’re encouraging people to take the #5DayDisconnect challenge, by signing off social media and not using games consoles for five days. You can sign off with the tag #5DayDisconnect, then record a video diary, like the teens in the film, and submit the entries to KWMC’s Youtube channel. How does being offline impact you? Do you feel isolated or connected? Watch the documentary in full at www.theglowingdivide.com

Bringing KWTV back to our screens 40 years ago Knowle West had its own TV channel – now we’re bringing it back! We’re really fortunate to have over 20 hours of footage from Knowle West TV, an early cable TV project that was first broadcast in the 1970s. From the Fighting Cocks pub and Merrywood Girls’ School to women’s liberation and local bands, we’ve unearthed some amazing films that shine a light onto the people and places of the past. We invite you to join us from 11th – 14th May to bring KWTV back to life. There are lots of ways to get involved: you could come to a screening at Knowle West Media Centre or you could host a screening for your group, where we come to you. You could also help us mix old and new footage to create new films.

Chris Lewis wins the Bristol Young Hero Action Hero award

Youth Moves nominated Chris in the Action Hero award of the Bristol Young Hero Awards and we were delighted to find out he had won at a recent citywide event! It was great for Chris to be recognised for all of his hard work and the volunteering he has done for a number of agencies around the community over a number of years. Chris has been helping with football clubs, at the allotment and in a huge range of settings and his own personal development has been great to see, but it was even better to have this recognised at this glamorous awards evening.
