In partnership with Knowle West Alliance

One Year On…

By Knowle West Alliance There’s no doubt it’s been a tough year - we’ve all been affected in some way, known someone who’s been ill, lost their job or had a loved one pass away. But in Knowle West there is a rare community spirit and this year has proved it. Organisations, community groups and residents have come together to help and support each other. Since 23 March last year, we have amazed ourselves by how much the community has achieved. We have cared for our most vulnerable, fed one another, had some much-needed fun and looked after our green space. To share some of this magic with you, here are some highlights: • Our COVID Support Hub has taken over 450 referrals, made hundreds of phone calls to local people in need and matched around 150 households with volunteer help. • Local organisations and businesses including The Sandwich Stop, Inns Court Community and Family Centre, Knowle West Health Association and Square Food Foundation have delivered over 22,000 free meals to families and vulnerable residents. What do we do?

Working Group Voices

Knowle West Alliance (KWA) aims to be as flexible as possible so we can change our work according to need. This ranges from making sure the community has a voice in local housing developments and running a Small Grants Programme to securing funding for improvements

Hi - I'm Tim Jones, a trustee at Filwood Community Centre and member of the KWA Working Group. It was in 2017 that Carolyn Hassan suggested to our trustees this idea of getting the Knowle West community to work together in co-operation. We jumped at the idea - it was a way of putting behind us some unhelpful attitudes from the past, so I've been involved from the start.

By working together, we can achieve more. The Alliance currently has three employees: Lucy Holburn (Alliance Coordinator), Frances Coates (Community Development Worker) and Emily Smith (Community Planning Facilitator). It has a growing Working Group made up of active and involved local residents, who meet monthly to direct the Alliance work. Representatives of the founding organisations also meet quarterly. We never imagined how much would come from that idea. Most recently there has been the huge effort of coping with the pandemic and the success of the Knowle West Support Hub. Another great result of the Alliance is that organisations outside Knowle West find it easier to relate to the area, whether it is the council talking about development proposals or funders discussing grant applications. Just now there are proposals to start the regeneration work on Filwood Broadway - so, as the scaffolding goes up, look out for events and information about the future!

Local voices Memorial tree planting on Northern Slopes A memorial tree planting took place recently on a Knowle West nature reserve – as a fitting tribute to a local conservationist passionate about preserving the area’s green spaces. Bob Franks, who died last September at the age of 92, was Chair of the Northern Slopes Initiative (NSI) for 12 years – a volunteer group which looks after the reserve. He passed away in Berkshire with his family and due to COVID-19 restrictions, many people in Bristol were unable to attend his funeral. It was decided to plant two oaks on

Ten trees have appeared on Filwood Broadway – as part of a scheme to plant 590 street trees across the city and transform neighbourhoods. Bristol’s Greenstreets, funded by the Forestry Commission, will see 59 wards in the city with low tree cover given up to ten trees each. People living nearby have been consulted about the position and species of trees they would like. They include a Himalayan birch, holly and a katsura, which has autumnal colour and gives off the scent of burnt sugar. Knitting for Knowle West

The small ceremony took place at the end of February, Bristol City Council is working with the Forest of Avon and Bristol Tree Forum on the project. They hope local volunteers will be involved in looking after the trees – with seven planted on the green in front of Filwood Community Centre and three opposite the library. A local knitting group has been supporting residents to make items for people in need in the community – after receiving one of the Filwood Fantastic/Knowle West Alliance Grants. Knit and Natter made up packs for would-be knitters at the end of last year - which were left in local secondhand shop re:store. Some items were also given to the Alliance to find homes for. The NSI paid tribute to Bob’s hard work and commitment to the natural environment in Knowle West saying: “…It has been an honour for us to have worked with him and known him.” Bob was also a long-term member of the Hotwells & District Allotment Association and featured a number of times on BBC Radio Bristol – providing advice about allotments and gardening. www.northern-slopes-initiative. co.uk Jim Smith with one of the new trees.

Local voices Book released about local boxer Dixie Brown The great-great grandson of Dixie Brown has just produced a book about the popular boxer who lived in Knowle West and inspired future generations. Josh Knight (22) has been researching his famous relative and compiled a book of documents. The Life of Dixie Brown 1900 – 1957 includes newspaper articles, sketches, boxing programmes and posters – much of them donated by boxing historian Miles Templeton. Josh says: “I’m interested in boxing and always have been. I’m also interested in history in general and always trying to find out as much as I can.” Dixie was born Anthony Charles in St Lucia in 1900. He first came to the UK by boat in 1919 – Tribute to Knowle West’s long-serving volunteer Knowle West has paid tribute to one of its longest serving volunteers who gave over 65 years to the community. Graham Blacker, who died in December at the age of 84, worked tirelessly behind the scenes for many local organisations. Although there were restricted numbers at his funeral in St Barnabas Church due to COVID-19 – the service was livestreamed for people to pay their respects. His cortege drove down Filwood Broadway – to mark Graham’s lifetime of contribution to the area. Knowle West Health Association (KWHA), where he volunteered for nearly 20 years, also decorated their building in his honour. (See p 9). Graham started his volunteering journey in 1952 when, at just 17, he trained as an Assistant Youth Leader in his local church.

The sporting legend competed in over 100 fights as both welterweight and middleweight and had around 200 bareknuckle fights. His biggest fight was at Colston Hall against George Rose watched by some 4,000 people. He was blinded in a match in

Josh says: “He was a Roman Catholic - and the local community had a whip-round to send him to Lourdes to cure him – but it didn’t work.” Many older residents have fond memories of Dixie - who had a special chair at the former Venture Inn on Melvin Square. He is buried at Arnos Vale with his wife and son, Sidney, who died at the age of 15. Josh is now working on a second book which can be pre-ordered, concentrating on Dixie’s life before and after boxing. local voices Bike club for Knowle West Young people in Knowle West have welcomed the news they will soon have a bike club in their area. Weekly sessions are due to start this April in Newquay Road – with future plans to build a bike track on land between the play park and Ilminster E-Act Academy. Knowle West Bike Club has been funded by City Funds – with the idea coming from local young people themselves who will be involved in the project from the start. Youth worker and founder of Grassroot Communities, Ben Carpenter, consulted with dozens of young people in the area to find out what they wanted. He says: “Talking to the different age ranges, the one thing that most New nursery class at School of Christ the King

The young people said they’d love to have a bike track, off the streets and close to home…” There is funding for two years – and club meetings could also include trips to other bike tracks. There will also be a wellbeing theme integrated into the sessions, which will be open to ages eight to 18. In the second year there will be funding for a container and equipment as well as to pay a bike mechanic and coach – and cycles are also being donated to the project. Ben adds: “It will be providing them with a resource and supporting them to learn about it – more than that it’s a focal

local voices From compost to computer – starting a gardening group in lockdown By Community Reporter Don Jones

Like many people when the first COVID-19 lockdown started in March last year - I felt a sense of panic at the prospect of shielding home alone.

Peaceful urban farm at The Park to go A mini urban farm tucked away behind The Park Centre is to go – due to redevelopment at the site. Home to a menagerie of animals including two goats, a pig, 12 turkeys and around 20 hens – Andy’s Haven will not be moving to the new site when work starts on the new secondary school for the area. The smallholding and organic community garden where produce is grown to be sold Filwood Community Market to re-open in May

from 1 May. The market runs on the first Saturday of the month at the top of Filwood Broadway and although we’ve missed quite a few since the pandemic hit last March - we’re hoping to come back bigger and better. We’re looking for people for the following:

My life has always been about the outdoors, I'm a passionate community gardener and spring is the most exciting time. I knew there had to be something positive I could still do. Even in lockdown. It was gardening that came to my rescue - as it has done so often in times of crisis. I couldn't go out and do any of my usual work - but I do have my own garden. And I have a computer. Being clueless about social media, I tried to set up a selfhelp gardening group by email, nervously reaching out to friends and neighbours. A friend helped me transfer the group onto its own

dedicated Facebook page. We now have 80 members and rising, all exchanging ideas and gardening tips, sharing pictures and videos of their achievements. The group is for anyone and everyone, beginners and boffins, from Bristol and beyond. I suspect that in 2020 the Filwood/ Knowle West area had some of the best gardens in the South West! But the impact on me personally has also been huge. I've made many new friends and learned so much beyond the horticultural becoming more media savvy. Far from the isolation I dreaded – the experience has actually been much more about doors opening. Facebook: Gardening Friends of Filwood.

He told The Knowledge: “I want to make it absolutely clear, The Park don’t want me to go, they’ve been brilliant – but it’s my decision. “I can’t guarantee the animals’ safety on the new site as they are going to be right next to the new academy – and they must come first…” Andy is taking some of the animals with him and has found “loving homes” for the others, including Jess the pig – and

says he is due to leave at the end of March. He adds: “I’m at my happiest when I’m at The Park and I will still be back to do the grass, the flowerbeds and pots. I love the place and I want it to look colourful and tidy.” Full story at www.knowlewest.co.uk

We have all recently been told the road map back to a normal life and the timescale that will allow the club to re-open - which is great news. The club would rather take this time

to remember all those people that have been lost; members that have lost loved ones and friends during this painful time and not having the chance to grieve or to celebrate lost ones’ lives with close friends. So let’s all take a moment, a breath, a thought and remember - before those of

us that have the chance move forward. The club will re-open on 17 May and it looks forward to seeing everyone then. Novers Park Community and Social Club: www.facebook.com/ groups/216613338929002

At Redcatch Community Garden we are excited and grateful to see our new marquee in place. Like many other organisations around us, we have struggled to keep going to maintain our fantastic community resource. In 2020 we

pressed on with our plans to replace our old marquee, raising £40,000 from Enovert Community Trust and a well-supported Community Crowdfunder. Our new marquee has electricity, lighting and heating and most importantly does not fall over in the wind! We know from those who visit, what we provide in terms of offering a great place where

people can come together, learn, relax, try new activities and improve their physical health and mental wellbeing, is so very important. Now, more than ever! www.facebook.com/redcatch communitygarden/

On 19 January there was a fire behind the till, just by the window of the middle unit of re:store. The property was empty and it was spotted when the temperature got so high it shattered the window. At which point, most of Knowle West called the fire brigade, and the team got to see why we practice the fire safety drill. We are waiting for the report from the insurer. As it was an accident, we probably won’t ever know the sequence of events. A big thank you to the fire brigade

There are many ways to practice the Five Ways and most of us will be doing some of them already, but we hope there is something in the box to inspire, motivate, and help us be kind to ourselves after such a difficult year. Youth Moves shortlisted for national award Youth Moves was one of five UK organisations to be shortlisted for a national award - for our work during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The prestigious UK Youth Inspiring Hope Awards ceremony held this March saw youth charities competing against each other from all across the country. We made the top five in the PwC Inspiring Youth Organisation Award category - we didn't win but are very proud of our achievement. And we would like to congratulate the brilliant organisation that did called We Belong, based in

London, who work with young UK migrants. CEO Ali Dale said: “This is testimony to the staff that have worked tirelessly with outstanding commitment and passion for young people and the community during a difficult year for all. “We haven’t always been the best at shouting about what we do, and quietly go about our work, so to be seen on the national stage, feels strange but is great…”

Youth Moves works across Knowle West, Hartcliffe and Withywood - engaging 769 young people last year. We also work with local schools Bedminster Down, Merchants Academy and Bridge learning Campus on alternative education support. In the last year 75 young people received mentoring and support from our one-to-one services and during lockdown we went virtual - running three Zoom youth club nights every week. FIRST OPPORTUNITY TO BUY AT BOKLOK ON THE BROOK, BRISTOL. BoKlok on the Brook comprises a collection of modern, sustainable, Scandinavian style homes, in a green and beautiful community alongside Brislington Brook. The new development will be situated on Airport Road in south Bristol and will include a collection of one and two -bedroom apartments and spacious two and threebedroom houses. At BoKlok, when we launch a new collection of homes for sale, we do things a bit differently. Anyone who is interested in purchasing one of our new homes will have an opportunity to enter our ballot. A draw will then take place and those who have been selected (at random), will have an opportunity in turn, to reserve one of our new homes. We believe that this gives everyone an equal opportunity to reserve and that it is the fairest approach.

The ballot for our first release of two and three-bedroom houses opened on Monday 22nd February. The ballot will remain open for one month, closing at 12:00 midday on Monday 22nd March 2021. If you are interested in reserving one of our two or three-bedroom houses, visit our website for more information on how to enter the ballot. Alternatively, you can call us on 0117 261 6160.
