In partnership with Knowle West Alliance

People power supports community through pandemic By Julia Williams Bristol City Council Community Development Practitioner

The past eight months have put a magnifying glass up to our communities - especially how they have used their strengths to navigate through the tsunami that is COVID-19. At a time when chaos, uncertainty and unpredictability crept in to every corner of our lives, communities have wrapped around their citizens and proved their resilience in the face of adversity. Local people have used their skills and passions to volunteer their time - dog walking, gardening, helping people move house, delivering food and prescriptions - and sometimes making and sharing things: face masks, bread and growing and sharing plants. People have been connecting with each other through online groups (a virtual gardening group has been set up in Knowle West) and Whats App (one street in Knowle now organises a fish and chip run once a week for everyone). Organisations have worked together to provide vital support, delivering frozen food cooked locally through the Knowle West Health Association and Square Food Foundation at The Park. There’s also a new food bank in Filwood thanks to Severn Vineyards. Continued on p2

n 2018, a group of residents and five local organisations - Filwood Community Centre, The Park, re:work, Knowle West Health Park and Knowle West Media Centre came together and developed the idea of Knowle West Alliance. The aim was to create a partnership of active and connected local residents, businesses and organisations to build and support positive action in Knowle West. We want to help facilitate changes big and small that make

a difference to people’s lives. Officially launched in spring 2019, the Alliance is growing and partnering with more and more local organisations. By working together, we can achieve more. The Alliance has two ongoing employees who manage the day-to-day work, Lucy Holburn, Alliance Coordinator, and Frances Coates, Community Development Worker. Lucy has worked in Knowle West for a long time and is responsible for all the organisational work and making sure we’re funded.

What do we do?

Meet our working group

Alliance – Who are we?

I

Frances, who has also worked previously in Knowle West, does a lot of the community engagement work on the ground and has been coordinating the volunteers for the Covid Support Hub during the pandemic. Frances’ predecessor, Emily Smith, is also re-joining us temporarily as Community Planning Facilitator to support our work around resident involvement in regeneration and planning. The Alliance has a Working Group, made up of active and involved local residents who meet monthly to direct the Alliance work. Representatives of the founding organisations also meet quarterly.

Knowle West Alliance aims to be as flexible as possible so we can change our work according to need. This ranges from making sure the community has a voice in local housing developments and running a Small Grants programme to·securing funding for improvements to the area and managing the COVID Support Hub (see p3). People power By Julia Williams (continued from front page)

Knowle West Health Park and St Martin’s Church in Knowle have provided experienced befrienders to talk to residents on a weekly basis, supporting them through often tricky and ongoing situations and signposting to other services when needed.

Councillors have made regular calls to residents and helped with deliveries. Knowle West Media Centre and Knowle West Alliance have shared and celebrated stories of residents’ experiences and the amazing collective effort through podcasts, videos and their website and social media. And so to the future… As communities begin to reemerge how are Filwood and Knowle looking forward?

Power comes from people and people are the answer. People came together, helped each other, grew stronger and built bridges. People reached out their hands and pulled one another up and through. There are already pockets of creativity beginning to grow from the Filwood Fantastic grants awarded to local people, so it won’t be long before communities sparkle once more.

nowle West Alliance partnered with Bristol City Council - using their We Are Bristol coronavirus hotline to take local referrals and volunteers who’d signed up through their Can Do volunteering platform.

Heather Williams, CEO of Knowle West Health Park, writes: On 23 March the country went into Lockdown. By 2 April, Knowle West Alliance began taking their first referrals for residents who wanted support. The Health Park led the setting up of the Hub, but it was important that it was a Knowle West Alliance Hub, bringing

At the start of lockdown one - not knowing what lay ahead - we worked with partners from across the city to set up an emergency food parcel provision. This was to make sure anyone that needed food, for whatever reason, didn't go without. The team at Severn Vineyards kindly stepped forward, under the umbrella of East Bristol Foodbank, and have been delivering good quality emergency food parcels into Knowle West since then. We are grateful for their hard work and commitment. I-HOPE at Ilminster Avenue Nursery School By Lisa Banger

I-HOPE has supplied families and the local community with approximately 500 food parcels since July 2020.

Shortly afterwards we set up a partnership with local cookery schools, Knowle West Health Association and Square Food Foundation. Here staff and volunteers have been making delicious ready meals that our volunteers have been able to take to residents that were isolating - or for whom a home cooked meal and a friendly face helped. This is a lovely bit of pulling together, with the logistics supported by re:work - a great team effort. Again, these organisations stepped up, worked their socks off and continue to do so. Massive thanks go to the staff and volunteers that have made that happen. We collect donations from Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Warburton’s. This service is important for vulnerable families, who are finding it hard to manage financially. They can also donate back to the food bank if they wish.

It has worked closely with many other groups outside of this community. The Health Park supports people one-to-one to enable them to grow confidence that leads to improved health outcomes. The Health Park staff have done a brilliant job, sharing skills, knowledge and support for new call befrienders. Barny Haughton of Square Food Foundation with meals prepared for residents.

together lots of different organisations, residents, volunteers and resources to grow community resilience. The Hub isn't about any one organisation, it's about the community. The Hub has been able to bring together new partners to provide emergency food parcels, meals, grants, mental health support and health care.

One of our volunteer meal deliverers, Jason, says: “Some people prefer to donate money, but I'd rather give my time. It's important to play a part in supporting your local community if you're able to. I know it's only a small thing I'm doing, but I hope it helps.”

The service is available Wednesdays and Thursdays for parents. Contact us through our Facebook page https://m.facebook.com/ I-Hope-246605116529152/ or call 0117 903255.

Although we do have a full itinerary of activities happening within the home - our residents have really missed the outside world and knowing that so many care has been a great support.” On World Kindness Day in November, pupils from Ilminster Nursery School also sang a song for the residents – who were so grateful to everyone in the community they shared a poem to say thank you.

Mike, an elderly Knowle West resident, came through the Support Hub in April needing some shopping – but he also had another request – to grow sunflowers for some neighbours’ children. Some of our kind volunteers donated sunflower seeds, pots and compost and delivered them to him, but rather more than he was expecting! The result was an excess of seedlings and Mike asked us if we could find homes for them all. After putting a callout on our

local organisations In March 2020 - at the start of the lockdown - we closed the office and stopped all working with participants as our groups are some of the most vulnerable. We were all still working from home to see how we could best help the community during the crisis. The maintenance of the allotment was possible with one person there at any one time - with the produce going to our Friendship group of around 35 people, all elderly residents. The counselling service reverted

to telephone and Zoom. We also recruited five new counsellors for six months spanning JulyDecember - we were able to provide free counselling to 56 people per week during the toughest months. Over the spring and summer we have been able to help further - with our kitchen tutor, Sarah Scott, making 40 plus meals per week to be delivered to local residents. When restrictions were lifted, the kitchen was able to start 1:1 work with some residents and planning start back with very small school classes. At Filwood we’re grateful for all the support we’ve seen from funders and residents recently - we’ve had some muchneeded work done on the building and seen residents’ creative ideas become reality. Local groups and visitors will now be kept warmer and drier, with new canopies up in our courtyard, a heating system upgrade, and new windows underway. We’ve been able to hire local traders to do this thanks to Asda Foundation, Ibstock Enovert Trust, and Enovert Community Trust. Our Filwood Fantastic project (with KWMC) had fun with residents through online co-design workshops and we made these together: - Crazy Golf will be ready in the new year (build led by re:work, funded by CIL) - Our Walk of Hearts & Stars is now up (see page 5 for more info and collaborators) - Our Light Up Filwood lantern parade (led by Alan May of Arts Enlarge, working with Christ The King and Greenfield E-Act primary schools), which hit the streets just before November lockdown and brought joy, light and music to the streets and inspiring some impromptu break dancing and doorstep boogying!

Walking is good for you, particularly this year when everything else has been so difficult to do. It’s a great form of exercise and a way to make new friends or meet up with old ones. The health benefits of walking include reducing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, depression and anxiety. Our One Heart Walk is the gentlest of walks up to 25 minutes on flat paths around the health park. We meet on Monday mornings and walk in small, socially distanced groups.

A volunteer-resident buddying web app created theparkcentre.org.uk for the Knowle West Alliance Covid Support Hub Daventry Road, Knowle, Bristol BS4 1DQ

Bristol City Council Community Development Practitioner for Knowle West, Julia Williams, writes… During a weekend in April 2020 - amidst the pandemic - volunteers used their digital skills to improve and create a localised volunteer support system in Knowle West. Knowle West Alliance, supported by Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC), along with volunteers and myself shaped a more tailored response to the emergency support being delivered in the community - the volunteer web app To/Fro. This is a local vision - directed by the needs of residents and contributions of local organisations - harnessing offers of help, resources and

time for local people in need of a hand. We now have a team of volunteer coordinators trained on To/Fro, so the volunteer system once delivered by Bristol City Council and their Can Do Bristol platform is now connected and organised by the community for the community. Volunteer and To/Fro coordinator, Gordon, says, “…I can see what’s available and agree to help at a touch of a button… it’s so much easier to create a request and assign opportunities. “I like the idea of this becoming a place where local people can ask for help, not just in an emergency, rather if someone is struggling they can ask, like you would a neighbour or a friend.”

Knowle West Alliance Community Development Worker, Frances Coates, says: “We have 63 volunteers on the system currently and numbers are gradually growing… I’m proud to have played a small part in this amazing innovation for the community of Knowle West.” Although it was started to help during the pandemic, KWMC wants to make To/Fro a longer-term resource for Knowle West – and next year hopes to share the tool with support hubs across the city. It will deliver both homes for private market sale as well as mixed tenure social housing, for Bristol City Council.

Graeme Culliton, BoKlok UK Managing Director and Country Manager: “We are committed to not only building new homes but new and sustainable communities too. As we move forward into 2021, we’re making home ownership more accessible for people throughout the city.”

BUILDING A FRIENDLY AND HEALTHY PLACE TO LIVE A BoKlok neighbourhood is about more than the buildings of which it’s comprised. A BoKlok community aims be a friendly and healthy place to live. It’s a vital element of any BoKlok project that the spaces between buildings promote life and activity, and that the community is well connected. The Brislington Brook will be retained and renovated and is envisaged as the green heart and lungs of the new community here. The Brook itself and the scattered trees are of local value and therefore will be retained and enhanced where possible.
