I realized something today: nothing comes from nothing. You can’t just draw to draw or dance to dance. It has to be something that you are passionate for. Otherwise, what you do is empty. Your passion is what you LOVE to do. I love to dance and draw. Everything in my dance, I loved and performed full out, enjoying all of it! When it came to my artwork, I just did it to do it—I had no spark whatsoever. Now that I realize that I have to draw, paint or what I enjoy, my heart goes into my passion. My main message is, do what you really like! There is nothing holding you back. Be you and have fun doing it.

Why are they dashing here and there As swift as bullets? Driving as fast as they can Like they are late to everything. Why can’t they just s l o w d o w n, Take a deep breath, And just relax? It’s like people don’t know how to Stop anymore, And take a look around To enjoy the views and the peacefulness Of slowing down, And coming to a stop, A complete stop. Life goes by in a flash, So why would you want to speed up the process? Submitted by: Janaea B., Age 14, MS 118, Bronx, New York

g N I H T Y N A goes Fuchka is a Bangladeshi street food. I eat it every month at least once. It is REALLY tasty! Fuchka picture submitted by: creativegirlever

FOOD OF THE MONTH:

FUCHKA!

Fuchka is a savory dish made of potatoes, chickpeas boiled in spices, tomatoes, onions, coriander and green chiles. It comes with a sweet and sour tangy tamarind sauce. All of the ingredients are packed into a crunchy hollow wheat shell. It’s hard to eat unless you can manage it all in one bite!

IDENTITY THEFT! The lunch line, That crowded narrow hallway. Children shoving and pushing towards the tables, Like it was free food during the Great Depression— The unscrupulous trying to cut in line. I can barely peek over another Depression victim’s shoulder to see what the hot lunch is. And what’s not helping? The heat from the grill— it strangles us, as we wait. The student in front of me purchases his food: A deli sandwich, A Snapple, and a cookie. Poor kid. He doesn’t know, About that cookie. It’s time to make my purchase: A hamburger, Chocolate milk, and a cookie.

I had heard rumors, about the chocolate chip cookies. I could never bring myself to believe them, It would break my heart. At the cramped lunch table, A bead of sweat rolls down my forehead. I wipe it away, with haste. I cannot let them see that I am afraid. Undercooked dough with wrinkly black dots— The cookie looks suspicious. The gruesome realization comes to me, As my teeth dig into the cookie. The rumors spoke the truth: This is no chocolate chip cookie. This is an imposter! An identity thief… It is an oatmeal raisin cookie. I cry. Submitted by: Jake W., Grade 7, Fox Lane Middle School, Mount Kisco, NY

INKSLINGER Giraffe How LONG INKSLINGER

Got Its NECK

Once upon a time, there was a giraffe that had no neck. He was so sad that he couldn’t see anything because he was so short. Then one day, his elephant friend came to help. The elephant wrapped his trunk around the giraffe’s neck and pulled and pulled until his neck was five feet long. That’s how the giraffe got his long neck. Now the giraffe is happy because he can see for miles! Story submitted by: Jack E., 4th Grade, Saint Anne’s Episcopal School, Denver, Colorado

My advice is...it doesn’t really matter if you mess up, because if you keep drawing, eventually you won’t mess up any more. And if you do mess up, it’ll be easy enough to get around. -Submitted by: KCG PorcelainIris

My problem is... every time I draw, I mess up, especially when I try to draw well. What should I do?

My advice is...relax and take a deep breath. It doesn’t need to be perfect just do the best you can and enjoy doing it with an open and calm mind. -Submitted by: creativegirlever

{

My advice is...try reading some drawing books! Read advice or watch tutorials online. Also copying other drawings helps when you are practicing. And remember—you don’t have to be good at drawing. Everyone has their strengths. Good luck! -Submitted by: enilorak

When you’re breaking up with a bf/gf or even a friend, there most likely will be a fight. There’s a few things you need to remember about fighting fair. If you’ve seen a bad argument go down, you’ve probably seen one side that was being fair get totally shunned. But what would you do as an onlooker? Support the side that’s being fair! Does that make arguments popularity contests? I guess it does. There are a few things to remember when fighting: #1: Be the mature one. When they throw the nastiest things they’ve got at you, you just give them good reasoning in your argument. NEVER SHOUT OR USE VIOLENCE!! That will completely kill your rep, and get you into trouble! #2: Hang out with trustworthy friends as much as possible in that time, so that if they start saying thing like “They called me ___!” or “They started this rumor about me!” you have vouchers to say “No they did not!” It’s good emotional support too. #3: I know you’re sick of hearing this, but don’t show them they’re getting to you! It encourages them to know their efforts aren’t in vain. 15

You know what’s up! now tell us!

Hear the voicE From young to old, across the globe, It’s time to listen, it’s time to be bold, Our mother earth is crying out, And even her tears can’t quench the drought. We turned the sea from blue to brown, Our fish can’t swim, they only drown, The air we breathe—no longer fresh, Tell me how to clean this mess. We’ve heard the words of global warming, The effects of which creep up without warning. Our ears are open but may as well be closed, Our eyes are watching but we turn our nose. 20

Along with habitats, earth’s losing its identity, Affecting nations’ unity in diversity. These cradles of civilization we ought to protect, Our natural resources are under attack! The importance of evolution is clear, But why destroy all that is dear? We have more that we appreciate, Let’s turn back the clock before it’s too late. Brothers, sisters the time has come, We have to face what we have done, Our land has changed, so has the sea, Mother Earth pleads,”Please...SAVE ME.” Submitted by: City Hunter

Three Seasons of Day Morning comes. Smell of fresh rain born from the clouds, Fog smothering the lake and silhouetting the damp grass. The crystal-like dew gracefully glides down the pink petunias, Sparrows chirp at the sight of the sun, fighting against the fog. Afternoon sneaks past. Golden leaves dance to the ground. The gentle pitter patter of the rain cascading across the lake, The smell of pollen tickling my nose, Sun warm against my face. Night draws closer. Black waves crash against the shore, The willow tree shakes violently back and forth. Angry gods smash into the earth, creating thunder, Hail beats to the ground. The reflection of the silver moon shines against the water peacefully. My bed waits. Poem submitted by: Linnea U., Age 12, Lakeside School, Issaquah, Washington
