QUANTO INQUINA UN PRODOTTO?

A dirlo sono i risultati dell’analisi del ciclo di vita (LCA), una metodologia con cui si può capire quanto un prodotto “pesi” sull’ambiente. Un calcolo che prende in considerazione tanti parametri, dai materiali grezzi e l’energia che sono serviti per realizzare quel prodotto, fino ai costi di trasporto e di smaltimento. In altre parole, l’LCA dice qual è il prezzo che il nostro pianeta deve pagare per ogni prodotto realizzato.

Quando sentiamo parlare di inquinamento generato da contenitori e imballaggi - cosa che capita sempre più spesso - il più delle volte pensiamo alla plastica.

Ma siamo proprio sicuri che la plastica sia il nemico numero uno del pianeta?

In realtà le cose sono più complicate di così. Sotto molti aspetti, infatti, la plastica è un materiale davvero ecologico. Tanto che, rispetto al vetro, ha un impatto ambientale molto più contenuto. Questo anche grazie alla tecnologia che, soprattutto nell’ultimo decennio, ha fatto passi da gigante: ad esempio nella lavorazione della plastica PET, che è stata resa sempre meno inquinante.

Se la plastica può avere un LCA inferiore rispetto al vetro, è anche vero che quest’ultimo è un materiale fantastico: tanto per cominciare permette di conservare, proteggere e mantenere inalterate le qualità del prodotto contenute al suo interno. Inoltre, può essere riciclato all’infinto. Tutte ottime qualità e, infatti, anche noi di Jurverha usiamo il vetro per determinate formulazioni, ad esempio per garantire la stabilità di quelli che contengono molti oli essenziali.

Nella pratica, però, riciclare il vetro è molto dannoso per l’ambiente. Intanto perché il vetro è pesante, cosa che si traduce il maggiore emissioni di anidride carbonica durante la movimentazione e i trasporti. E poi, per far sì che il vetro possa trasformarsi in qualcosa d’altro, ha bisogno di essere sottoposto a varie fasi di fusione ad altissime temperature. Un procedimento che di per sé è più inquinante di quello per il riciclo della plastica. Ecco perché, a conti fatti, non è detto che il vetro sia sempre meglio della plastica. Questo non significa che il vetro non vada utilizzato, ma va usato con consapevolezza.

Did you know that... plastic is more environmentally friendly than glass?

When we hear of pollution generated by containers and packaging - which happens more and more often - most of the time we think of plastic.

But are we really sure that plastic is the number one enemy of the planet?

In reality things are more complicated than that. In many ways, plastic is a really eco-friendly material. It actually has a much smaller environmental impact than glass. This is also thanks to technology which, especially in the last decade, has made huge strides: for example, by making PET plastic processing less and less polluting.

We can find out through the results of the life cycle analysis (LCA), a method that can evaluate the environmental impact of a product. Its calculation takes several parameters into consideration, from the raw materials and the energy needed to make the product, to the transport and disposal costs. In other words, LCA tells us the price that our planet must pay for every product that is made.

If plastic can have a lower LCA than glass, it’s also true that the latter is a fantastic material: to begin with, it makes it possible to preserve, protect and maintain unaltered the quality of the product it contains. Also, it can be recycled forever. All excellent qualities and we at Jurvedha also use glass for some formulas, for example to guarantee the stability of the products containing many essential oils.

In practice, however, recycling glass is very harmful to the environment. To begin with, glass is heavy, which results in more carbon dioxide emissions during handling and transport. And then, in order for glass to turn into something else, it needs to undergo various stages of fusion at very high temperatures. A procedure that in itself is more polluting than plastic recycling. That’s why, when everything’s taken into account, it’s not certain that glass is always better than plastic. This doesn’t mean that glass shouldn’t be used, but it must be used responsibly.

Per quanto riguarda noi di Jurvedha, che abbiamo molto a cuore la salute e il benessere di tutto ciò che ci circonda, cerchiamo di adottare, quando è possibile, pack a basso impatto ambientale. Ad esempio, il PET 100% riciclato in modo da recuperare e riutilizzare la plastica già prodotta e utilizzata.

I più critici potrebbero obiettare che la plastica impiega mille anni per degradarsi e che perciò andrebbe sostituita con materiali biodegradabili. Verissimo, ma non immediatamente realizzabile. Per questa ragione è fondamentale la nostra educazione. Dobbiamo infatti capire che il futuro è nelle nostre mani e che tutto dipende dai gesti quotidiani. Non ha senso incolpare la plastica per l’inquinamento che crea; dovremmo semmai guardare alle nostre abitudini e capire la differenza che può fare il riciclo così come un consumo critico e informato.

Ognuno di noi può essere un pezzettino di puzzle di questo pianeta. Come? Cercando di prestare più attenzione ai materiali, riciclare quanto più possibile e non farsi prendere dalla fretta legata al consumismo. Solo così riusciremo a vivere in un mondo più sano.

Insomma, l’avresti mai detto che la scelta più ovvia non è sempre quella migliore?

As for us at Jurvedha, who care deeply about the health and wellbeing of everything that surrounds us, we try to use low-impact packaging whenever possible. For example, 100% recycled PET in order to recover and reuse the plastic already produced and used.

Critics could argue that plastic takes a thousand years to decompose and therefore should be replaced with biodegradable materials. Very true, but this is not something that can be achieved immediately. That’s why it’s essential to be informed about this issue. We need to understand that the future is in our hands and that everything depends on our daily choices. It makes no sense to blame plastic for the pollution it creates: we should look at our habits and understand the difference that recycling and critical and informed consumption can make.

Each one of us can be a piece of the puzzle of this planet. How? By trying to pay more attention to materials, recycle as much as possible and not get caught up in the consumerist rush. Only this way will we able to live in a healthier world.
