Blake Mycoskie, founder of Toms Shoes, is interested in a building that will allow the various parts of the shoe business to work in a cohesive fashion. The design of the building is not only to be used to establish a specific brand identity, but to embrace the spirit of Blake’s vision. The site, located at the corner of Bowery Street and Prince Street, is connected to SoHo, New York City’s trendiest area. SoHo contains fashion’s most important names, and many fine examples of exhibition architecture. Toms Shoes will not only be an addition to the area’s commercial sector, but it will ultimately show New York City its true colors.

TOMS shoes can resemble a network since it functions like one; when you buy one pair of shoes, another pair is given out to a child in need. To incorporate that element into the design, the building’s structure would function as a network as well.

network? Soccer, like TOMS shoes, is always evolving. No play is ever alike, and the momentum can change in any instant. In soccer, the network exists between the players, their movement, the way they shift in time, and the movement of the ball, which drives the play. The concept for the design of the structure was derived from a scoring play between F.C. Barcelona and U.D. Almeria in an official La Liga game (the Spanish soccer league). The play is broken into 5 segments, and in those segments, the players begin to shift and intertwine within time as the play evolves. The structure created is strictly based on the network and relationship between the players on the play. Each point on the structure represents a player captured in time.

In model form, the height of the pin depicts the segment; the lowest pin signifies the first segment, and the highest pin signifies the last segment. The movement of each player on either side is broken down into 5 segments and connected by a string; the intertwining of the players creates a network in time, which in turn transforms into the structure of the building, which in turn gets worked and modified over a period of time to the fit the parameters of the building and to create ample space and an experience for those who use it.


Certain parts of the play are used to mold the initial form of the structure. In three dimensional form, one can view the intertwining and change in height. Moments like these are taken and inserted into the design.

A small portion of the production studio, located towards the end of the first level, can be viewed publicly. Consumers can then catch a glimpse of what the design process is about and how products are made.

North Section


Red is used throughout the building, as it is a color that symbolizes a numerous amount of emotions that sum up what Toms is about: excitement, energy, passion, desire, strength, power, etc.

The amphitheatre contains various screens that allow the consumer to customize and select products. The demands then get sent to the design and production studios to be processed.

Prince Street The sub-level contains images dropoffs made in recent years. and educates consumers on company is about and how the they’ve created works.

Roof Level (Garden)


The panels on the facade allow for instances where slits of light penetrate through the building. They function to limit the amount of direct light in order to make both the shopping and working experience comfortable, since this part of the building receives the most light throughout the day.

There are instances on the West facade that have larger openings; they allow for indirect light to enter in both the retail levels and the workplace. This large opening only receives direct light in the early part of the morning.
