Jersey Live Festival 2013 with JT - Official Programme

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our landmark 10th anniversary Jersey Live Festival. We’re delighted to be opening our doors once again to the people of Jersey, the Channel Islands and beyond, for what we hope will be a fitting celebration of a decade of events featuring some of the most important and most exciting artists in the music world. Since our first outing in 2004 – a one-day event with just two stages - we’ve seen some stellar names grace the Main Stage at Jersey Live, including bands like Kasabian, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Madness and Foals, and stars such as Dizzee Rascal, Paul Weller and Jake Bugg. Then there’s our famed Dance Stage, which has played host to Calvin Harris, Sub Focus, and 2ManyDJs. On the smaller stages, bands like Django Django, Frank Turner and Jamie Woon have performed early on in their careers before going on to enjoy massive success. A lot has changed since 2004. Social media, reality TV talent shows and the boom in the digital download market have changed the music industry beyond recognition, but one constant remains, and that’s the appetite for the pure rush of watching great live music with your best friends. We’re proud to be a part of that equation, and nothing gives us more pleasure than seeing thousands of happy, smiling faces at the Royal Jersey Showground over Jersey Live weekend. There have been a few moments, such as The Prodigy’s headline set in 2008, or seeing 10,000 people sing along with Noel during his performance of ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ last year, that have sent

shivers down our spines, and we hope that there can be a few more of those moments this year and many more in the years to come. As ever, we urge people to be as adventurous as they can at Jersey Live. Sure, there are legendary artists such as Fatboy Slim and Chic featuring Nile Rodgers – we can’t wait to see them turn Jersey Live into an all-out disco with classic hits like ‘La Freak’ and ‘Good Times’ – but there are plenty of other cult heroes and up-and-coming artists, spanning numerous genres, to discover over the weekend, such as the super talented Dry the River, spoken word from the iconic punk poet John Cooper Clarke, indie royalty The Cribs’ and grunge pioneers Dinosaur Jr, to name just a few of the artists we’re getting excited about. This may in fact be one of our most eclectic lineups yet. We’d like to say a massive thanks to everyone who has helped to put Jersey on the map as one of the coolest festival destinations in Europe – including our faithful sponsors JT, Jersey Tourism, all of the volunteers and staff whose hard work has been instrumental to our success, the local bands and DJs whose talents are part of what makes Jersey Live a unique festival, the honorary police and our neighbours in Trinity for welcoming us to the Parish, and last but by no means least, you folks, without whom, Jersey Live would just be a big old empty field. We couldn’t do it without you! Enjoy the 10th anniversary party – we know we will!” Warren Holt & Warren Le Sueur, Jersey Live Co-Directors

THE STAGES OF

JERSEY

LIVE MAIN STAGE The stage that started it all; as you might guess from the name, this is where the biggest artists do what they do best, and this stage has previously played host to some of the biggest of them all, including Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, Dizzee and many more. Look out for the likes of The Cribs, Bastille and of course Fatboy Slim and Example this year.

FULL FLOW LOCALE TENT Jersey’s top DJ talent go head to head, back-to-back, spinning house, techno, d&b, dubstep and everything in-between, from the moment the JL doors open, to the moment they close again.

HOSPITALITY STAGE

DANCE STAGE Jersey Live’s ‘second stage’ since the festival’s inception in 2004, the indoor Dance Stage was first headlined by Paul Daley (Le#field) and this year is headlined by d&b king Netsky and on Sunday is hosted by ‘All Gone Pete Tong’, with the big man himself topping the bill.

FOLKLORE STAGE A new addition to the festival, this stage sees iconic musicians, poets and spoken word performers alongside cult heroes and up-andcoming artists – Dry the River, Neville Staple and Howard Marks are just a few of the highlights.

JT ARENA Our headline sponsor JT once again hosts the intimate JT Stage, with performances from Psych-Rockers, Wolf People, Eccentric Electronica outfit, Public Service Broadcasting and many more. You'll find plenty to keep you going with free superfast JT Fibre Wi-Fi, live headline acts, a chill out zone and loads of giveways. Plus making its debut in the Channel Islands - the JT Fibre Igloo. Immerse yourself in 360 degree HD audio, visual, interactive gaming and the next generation of Silent Disco, powered by JT Fibre. 6

Hospitality ticketholders are entitled to various perks, including fasttrack entry to the festival, complimentary champagne and food voucher, fine dining and a private bar, and they also have exclusive access to this 500-capacity stage, which previously has seen the likes of Ed Sheeran, David Holmes and Darwin Deez perform intimate sets. This year’s Hospitality line up features friend of the festival Craig Charles, as well as spoken word/stand up sets from Howard Marks, John Cooper Clarke and comedian Simon Evans.

PAR 4 FIELD You’ll have to get your explorer’s hat on and discover this place for yourself, as we don’t want to ruin the surprise, but you’ll find lots of madcap interactive installations on this corner of the festival. Last year the Par 4 field had a bicycle-powered soundsystem, a human jukebox and real life (almost) gorillas. Who knows what it’ll offer up this year? We do, but we’re not telling…

RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW...

FATBOY

SLIM JJJJJ HEADLINER

Main Stage Saturday 22.30 – 00.00 Our Saturday night headliner needs little introduction: one of the world’s first superstar DJs, Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim has played a pivotal role in shaping electronic music, pushing boundaries from the early explosion of dance music in the 1990s up until the present day, his creative ambition raising the bar and paving the way for the success of the latest generation of electronic stars such as Guetta, Tiesto and Skrillex. With five studio albums, three live albums, two compilation albums, six mix albums and twenty-eight singles – including Top 10 hits such as ‘Rockafeller Skank’, ‘Right Here Right Now’, ‘Praise You’ and ‘Gangster Trippin’’ – Cook is undoubtedly one of the most important crossover dance acts to come out of the UK, and we’re incredibly excited to have him topping the bill for our 10th anniversary edition. With the biggest sound & lighting production the Channel Islands has ever seen, it’s sure to be an unforgettable set, and with Fatboy’s history of performing at huge events – including the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony and the infamous Big Beach Boutique concerts on Brighton Beach – we’re sure he’ll feel right at home on the Main Stage. Ahead of his headline set, we caught up with him to talk bumblebees, bassbins and slaphappy tour managers… Let’s kick off with a Top 5 festival moments… 1. Getting the entire crowd to sit down during 'Eat Sleep Rave Repeat' at Glastonbury this year.

8

2. The Chemical Brothers reprising 'Private Psychedelic Reel' seventeen times at Essential Festival in Brighton circa 1999. 3. Slowly changing from my civvies into a female bumble bee outfit during my set at Lost vagueness at Glastonbury - no idea what year! 4. Joining The Flaming Lips onstage at the Electric Picnic in Ireland – this time dressed as a tiger. 5. Sitting on the bass bins at Big Day Out in Australia watching Underworld rip out 'Born Slippy’. Do you approach festival sets differently to how you would a usual show? Any pre-show rituals that you go through to get in the mood? Pre-show rituals are to remove my shoes, put on the Hawaiian shirt and get slapped real hard round the face by my tour manager… festival sets have to be bigger and brasher both in content and performance. Also you have to react to the weather/location/mental state of the crowd! You’ve pushed the boundaries and had a huge hand in shaping the landscape of electronic music over the past couple of decades. What do you think of the current dance music scene in general and what electronic artists and producers do you see as blazing a trail for future generations of producers and DJs? The current explosion of EDM round the world has made the whole scene bigger but way more commercial. When things die down I expect people like Diplo, Skrillex and Maya Jane Coles to be taking things back underground. What new projects do you have on the horizon? I'm doing something big for the World Cup in Brazil next year. You’ve o#en been one for performing unusual shows such as being the first DJ to perform in the Houses of Parliament, or the massive Brighton Beach events, or your recent Glastonbury Tour; are you dreaming up any new ways of presenting the Fatboy Slim show? Perhaps performing with a live band for instance? Definitely not a live band! What I do only works as a DJ experience – I have tried! The experience will go sideways rather than bigger, more interesting locations rather than necessarily epic. Will this be your first time in Jersey? Will you get a chance to check the place out or is it a flying visit? And who are you looking forward to catching on the line up? I DJ'd in jersey many years ago as Pizzaman – about 1997? But didn't have any time to explore the island. Sadly I will be in and out in a flash again this time. One day I'll come and spend some quality time with my family. I hope I can catch up with John Cooper Clarke a#er all these years. Finally any last words for Jersey Live on its 10th anniversary and to the Jersey crowd ahead of your appearance at the festival in August? Happy tenth anniversary, see you at the Main Stage. Shoes off! For fans of: The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Underworld

EXAMPLE ★★★★★ HEADLINER Main Stage Sunday 21.30 – 23.00 Closing Jersey Live Festival’s 10th anniversary on Sunday night is one of the UK’s biggest musical stars, chart-topping rapper Example. His dancefloor-filling anthems make him the perfect artist to turn the Main Stage arena into an all out party, and having enjoyed a stratospheric rise to the top, he’s undeniably a certified A-lister who we’re delighted to have gracing the Main Stage. With hits such as ‘Won’t Go Quietly’, ‘Say Nothing’ and ‘Changed the Way You Kiss Me’, he’s already accumulated an impressive number of chart hits in his relatively young career, and having released his last two albums on Ministry of Sound and worked with electronic heavyweights including Calvin Harris, Sub Focus and Skream, Example is an artist whose appeal reaches from his loyal following of Hip Hop fans all the way to the nation’s electroheads. Blending high octane drum & bass, dubstep and electro-house productions with infectious hooks, soaring choruses and a slick lyrical flow, his shows are invariably electrifying affairs, as the Main Stage audience will discover at Jersey Live. Expect unforgettable sing-along moments and dancefloor bangers aplenty when Example takes to the stage with his band on Sunday night. For fans of: Professor Green, Tinie Tempah, Calvin Harris

10

THE CRIBS

Main Stage Saturday 19.15 – 20.00 Could theirs be the most raucous Main Stage set of the weekend? If The Cribs’ past record is anything to go by, it’s not the most outlandish bet you could make this weekend. The Main Stage is set for an explosive show on the Saturday of Jersey Live, with the biggest cult band in the UK making their very first appearance here. Fronted by the charismatic Ryan Jarman, the Leeds DIY rockers may have only been around for a decade but they’ve firmly

established themselves as British indie royalty, receiving the Outstanding Contribution to Music prize at the NME Awards earlier this year. Their combination of a DIY punk ethic and pure pop sensibility inspires a devoted following, and you can expect to see many a hardcore Cribs fan down at the front row rocking out to the band’s modern indie classics like ‘Men’s Needs’, ‘Come On Be a No-One’ and ‘Hey Scenesters!’ For fans of: The Strokes, The Ramones, Pavement

CHIC NILE RODGERS

★★★★★

GOOD TIMES!

Main Stage Saturday 20.45 – 21.45 We’ve had a fair few bonafide legends on the Jersey Live Main Stage and to say that we’re quite pleased to add Chic Featuring Nile Rodgers to that list would be something of an understatement. Disco only has one ‘greatest ever band’ and they’ll be right here on the Jersey Live Main Stage on Saturday night. The defining band of the 1970s disco explosion, the New Yorkers are true icons of pop music, with some of the most instantly recognisable disco classics of the 20th Century including ‘Le Freak’, ‘Everybody Dance’,

‘I Want Your Love’ and ‘Good Times’. Cited as an influence by such a diverse range of artists as Queen, Blondie, Da# Punk, Duran Duran and The Smiths’ Johnny Marr, Chic’s legacy is very much secured and the band were inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. They were also responsible for introducing to the world a young session vocalist who sung on their early albums – he went by the name of Luther Vandross. Guitarist Nile Rodgers, who founded the band in 1976, is also a legend in his own right as a producer, having applied his genius to cra# countless timeless pop classics including Madonna’s ‘Like A

Virgin’, David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ and Sister Sledge’s ‘We Are Family’, to name just a few, as well as collaborating with the likes of Michael Jackson, Britney Spears and of course as guitarist with Da# Punk on 2013’s biggest hit single ‘Get Lucky’ – a collaboration that has exposed Rodgers and Chic to a whole new generation of fans. Break out the platforms a nd get your flares on, and expect the Main Stage arena to go just a bit Studio 54 on Saturday evening when Chic bring a dash of New York disco glamour to Jersey Live. For fans of: Da! Punk, Michael Jackson, Sister Sledge

DEAP VALLY

If a Sunday a#ernoon dose of snarling, ferocious garage rock on Sunday sounds like your cup of tea then don’t miss Los Angeles guitar n’ drums duo Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards, aka Deap Vally. Their blistering brand of scuzzy, in-your-face rock has drawn comparisons with The White Stripes, The Black Keys and Led Zepellin, and since exploding on to the UK scene

just last year, Deap Vally have gone on to perform with punk legend Iggy Pop, support The Vaccines on their UK tour and open for Muse. Expect their set to get just a little bit rowdy. For fans of: The Stooges, The White Stripes, Led Zeppelin

THE ENEMY Main Stage Sunday 18.15 – 19.00 Coventry trio The Enemy return to Jersey Live a#er first appearing here in 2007, and we welcome them back with open arms! Fronted by the inimitable Tom Clarke, The Enemy have rightly gained a reputation as one of the most ferociously honest indie bands plying their trade in the UK today. Following a long tradition of bands like The Jam, The Clash and Oasis, Clarke and co’s unashamedly nofrills brand of rock n’ roll speaks of working class disaffection, and with fans including former Jersey Live headliner Paul Weller, they’re a band who very much carry the torch for good old fashioned British guitar music. We’re sure their return to the JL Main Stage will be a triumphant one.. For fans of: The Jam, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys

Saturday 16.15 – 17.00 The 1975 are undoubtedly one of the most exciting and most talked-about bands of 2013 so far, and their growing stature has seen the Manchester fourpiece receive praise from such influential tastemakers as Radio One DJs Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens. They scored their first big chart hit earlier this year in ‘Chocolate’ and have supported The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park and Muse at the Emirates Stadium, making it something of a whirlwind year. It’s clear that she’s an immemsely ambitious and hardworking artist, but more to the point, she’s one heck of a talented songwriter and performer. With dashes of Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake influences evident in her songwriting, Aplin’s stunning voice and heartfelt lyricism, quietly melancholic moments and rousingly epic anthems make for the perfect Sunday a#ernoon listening. Frontman, principal songwriter and guitarist J Mascis is o#en cited as ‘the godfather of grunge’ and was ranked 86th in a Rolling Stone poll of the greatest guitarists of all time, such was the impact of his band’s output in the late 1980s and early ‘90s, and his influence can be heard on many a rock

Things are going pretty well for them then. Oh, and did we mention that their autumn tour sold out instantly – including a date at the 5,000-capacity Brixton Academy that sold out in just EIGHT minutes? The brainchild of singer and songwriter Dan Smith, Bastille’s richly textured, blissfully melancholic and electronictinged rock is at once rapturously anthemic whilst straying away from being anything like formulaic, and their epic sound was simply born for the big stage. We’re in no doubt they’re set for dizzy heights, and it goes without saying that we’re rather chuffed that they’ll be joining us for our tenth anniversary celebrations on the Main Stage. Folklore Stage Sunday 20.45 – 21.30 Closing the Folklore Stage with his full band on Sunday (as well as performing a solo acoustic set on the Hospitality Stage) is an artist whose contribution to shaping British music is nothing short of immense. It is of course ‘the original rudeboy’, Neville Staple. As vocalist for The Specials, Staple was one of the masterminds for some of the

most important British ska anthems to come out of the Two Tone movement, including ‘Ghost Town’, ‘Monkey Man’ and ‘Message To Rudy.’ Rightly regarded as one of the UK’s greatest bands of the 20th Century, The Specials’ influence spans continents and spans generations. All hail an absolute flippin’ hero.

BAND

Please welcome Jersey Live favourites Dry the River, who return to the festival to headline the brand new Folklore Stage a#er first performing here in 2011. The London folk fivepiece have gone on to big things since their last visit to the island and their stellar talents were recognised in 2012 when they were included on the long list for the influential BBC ‘Sound Of…’ poll. Originally the solo vehicle of frontman Peter Liddle – a musician with a background in hardcore punk bands – Dry the River as a live act are nothing short of a revelation - at times gentle and breezy, at other moments ferocious – and with plenty of new material to showcase, we’re expecting their Folklore Stage performance to be a visceral, passionate affair. LEWIS WATSON

Precociously talented 20 yearold singer-songwriter Lewis Watson, recently signed to Warner Brothers Records, is set to perform two sets at Jersey Live 2013 over the weekend. Since first getting his songs out to the wider world via Youtube, Watson has been the talk of the town in music circles, and appears to be on the cusp of big things right now. His lush, laidback acoustic balladry is the perfect fit for the intimate surrounds of the Folklore Stage and JT Arena. .For fans of: Nick Drake, Ed Sheeran, Nina Nesbitti

Please welcome a national treasure, iconic punk poet John Cooper Clarke. A key player in the 70s punk scene, the ‘Bard of Salford’ is as synonymous with the

Manchester punk and new wave scene as the likes of The Fall and Joy Division, and his uncompromising, acerbic wit and linguistic flair have made him one of the most influential British poets of the 20th Century. The likes of Plan B and Alex Turner have cited him as an inspiration, and his legacy in the annals of British culture is assured. His live show is both exhillerating and hilarious – don’t miss it.. HOWARD

MARKS FOLKLORE ★★★★★ Folklore Stage Saturday 15.30 – 16.15 Hospitality Stage Sunday 17.30 - 18.15 You’ve been to Jersey quite a bit in recent years. What’s your overall impression of the island? Although I’ve been to Jersey quite a few times, I’ve never stayed there for longer than two nights at a time – usually just one – so I certainly don’t feel I know the island at all. However, what I’ve seen, I like a lot, I have made a number of friends there, and have liked everyone I met. You’re here for the duration of the festival so I take it you’ll get a bit of a chance to check out some bands – what are you hoping to catch? I know it sounds boring, but the headliners, mainly. Although I’ve seen Fatboy Slim several times, and Chic quite a few times, I’ve always enjoyed their performances immensely. I like Example, but I’ve never seen him, so I’m really looking forward to that. You seem natural at home on the stage. Do you think if your previous career hadn’t been so fruitful at the time, you might have pursued this career a bit earlier? Or did you need those

22

exploits to propel you into the limelight? I might seem to be natural and at home on the stage, but I assure you it’s just an act. I suffer terribly from stage fright. However, I think that’s a good thing – it’s replaced the thrill of crossing borders – and if I ever stop being nervous before a show, I’ll stop performing. What did you make of Rhys Ifans’ portrayal of you in the Mr Nice movie? It couldn’t have been done by anyone else. Rhys and I have been good friends for about seventeen years, so he didn’t have to study me at all. He knows me, I know him. In fact, if they ever made a film about his life, I’d be the best person to play him. You’ll be doing two sets over the weekend, a reading of children’s stories and a more ‘grownup’ set later on. Without giving too much away, for those who don’t know about Howard Marks, what does each set entail? The children’s stories are the traditional ones that they and we all know. I don’t write new ones. So far, every fairy story session I’ve done has gone down well, even with the adults. It’s quite an interactive event. The kids don’t just sit down quietly and listen. They have plenty to say. My adult show is unsuitable for children – it could scar them for life – and is based on my new show: ‘Scholar, Smuggler, Prisoner, Scribe.’ You’re ever-present on the festival circuit, but I imagine music festivals must have been unfamiliar territory for you when you first started being invited to perform at them. Can you describe your very first festival experience? They weren’t unfamiliar territory, actually. I went to the first ever Glastonbury, the first ever Isle of Wight festival, and countless others. I am, a#er all, a product of the 1960s. At the first Glastonbury festival, I think T-Rex were headlining, there were just 1200 people attending, and we all got our milk from Michael Eavis’ farm. Things have changed. The strangest festival experience you’ve had? Being asked by Michael Eavis about ten years ago to go on the Pyramid Stage and tell the massive crowd not to piss in the hedges as this would poison the fish in the streams. If you could curate a music festival, what would it be called, who would headline it, and what would be your unique selling point? It would be called “Heaven Can’t Wait,” and Little Richard would be the headliner. Its unique selling point would be featuring artists who are no longer with us, such as Elvis, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison. And finally – we couldn’t sign off without asking it – as a seasoned festivalgoer, what’s your best festival survival tip? Take plenty of dental floss and a pair of Himalayan trekking boots. 23

Don’t miss young producer Russ Chimes’ irresistible brand of popsavvy dance music. Coming with a healthy dose of nostalgia, his groove-laden house productions incorporate vintage synths and melodies that blend the melancholic with the euphoric; ‘Back 2 You’ was described by Annie Mac as a ‘future Balearic anthem’, and we’d make a similar prediction of his earlier single ‘Turn Me Out’, a pure dancefloor banger. He’s remixed Mark Ronson, Marina & The Diamonds and Chromeo, and his remix for Ellie Goulding’s ‘Starry Eyed’ has racked up almost 3 million views on Youtube to date. He’s got DJs lining up to praise him and producers lining up to be remixed by him. The world, apparently, is at his feet.

TONG ★★★★★ HEADLINER

All Gone Pete Tong Dance Stage Sunday 21.30 – 23.00 Not many DJs can claim to have their name used in Cockney rhyming slang, but the ubiquity of the phrase “It’s all gone Pete Tong” means that the Radio One and clubland stalwart is permanently embedded in public consciousness, and his story is intertwined with the story of electronic music itself. He first appeared on Radio One in 1981 and remains there in the Friday night 9 – 11pm slot, ushering in each weekend on the airwaves with one of the station’s most popular shows. As a DJ who has been a part of the electronic music scene since those early days of Chicago house music, through the acid house explosion of the late 80s, the ‘Superstar DJ’ era of the 90s and the EDM revolution of the present day, he’s one of the most recognised names in dance music, and he continues to champion fresh new talent, whether it be on his Radio 1 show, his daily USA radio show on leading electronic music station Evolution, or via bookings at his infamous parties. His 'All Gone Pete Tong' club event has grown into a world wide phenomenon. Over the part couple years he has taken it from Pacha Ibiza to clubs all over the UK and USA, via Festival tents at some of Europe's biggest festivals. We are excited to welcome 'All Gone' and Pete to Jersey Live where he will host the Dance tent on the Sunday and be joined by a stellar lineup of the finest cutting edge talent. GO FLOW WITH THE

Jersey has enjoyed a thriving clubbing scene since back in the heady days of the early 90’s dance music explosion. With many a big name DJ visiting our shores at various clubs over the years – veterans local clubbers will remember Lords, Madisons and Inn on the Park hosting the likes of Jon Digweed and Carl Cox back in the day – there’s been plenty of inspiration for local D-jockeys to get behind the decks themselves, and the island now has a thriving and diverse range of DJ talent. Which is good news for the Full Flow Locale Tent, who showcase Jersey’s finest. The brainchild of Jersey Live’s resident plumber and local DJ Griff, the Full Flow Tent has been at Jersey Live since 2010 and has since grown to become a staple part of the festival. We love to support local musical talents, so it’s with great pleasure that we present the Full Flow Tent, hosting dubsteppers Schema, Hip Hop-funksters Fuzzbox Inc, D&B’s very own DJ Spim, Jersey Live big cheese Warren Le Sueur spinning old school and contemporary house classics, and many more. Pop your head in, dust down your dancing shoes and go with the flow! Check the Stage Times pages for full listings.

PAR 4 FIELD Last year saw the introduction of the Par 4 field, and it returns again for Jersey Live 2013. Tucked away in a secluded corner of the festival is a field of eye-opening and jawdropping oddities, interactive installations and immersive theatrical performances. The key to making the most of this hidden gem is to wonder up there and discover it yourself, so we’ll keep this vague, but what we can tell you is that you’ll find the Sol Cinema – a solar powered miniature cinema showing comedy films, shorts, music videos and the odd surprise throughout the weekend. The Rinky Dink Soundsystem returns once again – a pedalpowered soundsystem that graced Jersey Live last year and has featured on Panorama and BBC Newsnight, Rinky Dink is a prime example of how green energy can be harnessed for the good of us all! Bramble FM is travelling comic roadshow hosted by DJs Les, Terry and Maureen – if you’re intrigued by the sound ‘Chas n’ Dave’s History of Rap’, you might want to pay it a visit. You’ll also find the Alternative Caravan Club, who will be exploring the curious fact that until recently, caravanning was illegal in Jersey… You’ll find this and much more in the Par 4 Field, a veritable smorgasbord of weird and wonderful delights!

THE STORY

BEHIND JERSEY LIVE

2004

Ten years ago, local events promoters Warren Holt and Warren Le Sueur had a big idea, and ten years later, you all know that as Jersey Live Festival. As we get ready to celebrate a decade of events which has seen Kasabian, Dizzee Rascal, The Prodigy, Noel Gallagher, Madness, Paul Weller and many more pass through the Parish of Trinity, we spoke to the festival’s creators to reflect on how it all got started… You'd both been promoting shows independently of each other before JL - how and why did you come to join forces? WH: It made sense to unify as we were both keen on achieving the same goal and thus eliminating potential competition in a small market place. WLS: Both of us were planning separate events in the early 2000’s and a#er I rolled out a smaller sized event, the very first Jersey Live Weekend in 2003, we joined forces a#erwards to create what we all know today as Jersey Live Festival. Having never done outdoor events on this scale before, how did you tackle the logistics of it all? WLS: We learned very quickly how to deal with the planning of what is needed to create a safe outdoor event. There were more things to consider with staging an island festival in terms of booking artists’

38

flights and accommodation, freight of stages, PA and lighting equipment from the UK. We managed the 2004 event with a relatively small team who all worked extremely hard to make it an event that stayed within the hearts and minds of the crowd that attended that year. It was our springboard to the following year, which saw the crowd double in size. When did work begin on JL2004 and what did the daily tasks involve? WH: The team was formed in the winter of 2003. I met Matthew Corbin at a Christmas party at the L'Horizon and invited him to consult and advise Warren and I on political and business matters. Matthew is still in this role ten years later. WLS: We began to plan for JL 2004 in January 2004, once we had both agreed to join together to create the festival. The initial tasks included finding a suitable site to host the festival, which of course is the Royal Jersey Showground in Trinity. We then had to create our initial event plan, ready for presentation to the entertainments advisory panel, and then putting together a bill of artists and the initial branding. What big surprises did you encounter along the way? WH: Selling tickets! Convincing people that what we were doing would be ultimately professional and unlike any music event that has ever existed in the Channel Islands. What would the consequences for you have been had the festival not been a success? WH: A huge debt to pay off over the following years, not unlike the chaps in Guernsey or Grassroots who have both recently gone into bankruptcy.

Describe the day itself, for you both personally? WLS: Seeing so many people attend an event that was brand new, and our own creation, was incredibly satisfying. The weather that day was perfect too, a bright and sunny thirty degree day. Being responsible for the safety of all attendees, liaising with the blue light services right through to the event staff was a new experience purely due to the scale of the event and the number of people involved. WH: I had no time whatsoever to enjoy the event. I ran around doing jobs using my skills as an electrician and overseeing the many roles we had taken on ourselves; we are ultimately responsible for the safety of all of those people and that has always remained the number one objective. Everything else including the festival experience is built around safety. What was your highlight of that event? WLS: Musically, Razorlight, who, were amazing that year. They had shot to fame just before the festival, and there was a huge anticipation for them on the day. WH: Razorlight and Scratch Perverts, the two acts that were second from headline on the live and DJ bills, were my favorite artists. However the people reacting to what we had created was the most fulfilling feeling. We all throw parties and our aim is for the guests to enjoy themselves; this was the same but on a slightly bigger scale. Our ethos will always remain the same; we love Jersey, its people and its visitors, and music and performance, it’s why we do this. This tenth anniversary year will be a beautiful celebration. The people make the party, and Jersey Live has the most incredible party crowd. I am so excited and grateful to be a part of Jersey Live Music Festival.
