WELCOME TO THE 9TH EDITION OF JERSEY LIVE! Can you believe we’re now into our ninth edition of Jersey Live? It seems like just yesterday that we first pitched up at the Royal Jersey Showground, but we’re now heading towards a decade of great events that have brought many happy memories and unforgettable performances. As a festival with a capacity limited to 10,000, we’ve always prided ourselves on being able to offer up a world class line up to rival that of major festivals, whilst still retaining that close sense of intimacy and friendliness that is unique to boutique events, and this year we think we’ve got that balance just right; two massive Main Stage headliners and an eclectic line up peppered with stars, in the cosy surrrounds of our Trinity home. In Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, we have a rock n’ roll star who deserves all the superlatives that have been fired his way over the years, since emerging with Oasis in the mid-90s as one of the most popular and important British songwriters since Lennon and McCartney. He’s treading a new path with the ‘Birds, but continuing to come up with hits into his third decade as a recording artist. High Flying Birds live shows frequently feature a number of Oasis classics, making for a real treat for Noel fans young and old. That’s just the tip of the iceberg; of course there’s the Saturday night headline slot filled by stadium ravers Chase & Status, whose first appearance at Jersey Live in 2010 was one of the most memorable live performances in our festival’s history. They’re back, and bigger and better than ever. It’s not all about the headliners of course, and there are plenty of incredible acts on across the festival’s five stages: Bobby Gillespie and the legendary Primal Scream perform here for the first time on the Main Stage, as do Brit-rap duo Rizzle Kicks, whose fun-loving old skool take on the genre has made them one of the most exciting acts in the UK now; on the Dance Stage there’s d&b from Hype, techno from James Zabiela and lightning fast scratching from Jaguar Skills; amongst the up-and-coming artists performing on the JT and SoBe Stages are Jake Bugg who wowed the Jersey crowd at Folklore, Friends, the coolest band to come out of NYC this year, and a raft of fantastic local acts; the Hospitality Stage is set to be absolutely rocking this year, with David Holmes, Craig Charles and Smoove & Turrell all manning the decks throughout the weekend. There’s so much to see and do that you might not be able to cram it all into one weekend, but that’s the beauty of Jersey Live: each person comes away from it with a different festival experience, and different stories to share with their friends. We hope you take time out to explore Jersey Live and its several stages, making new discoveries and new friends along the way. Have fun! The Jersey Live Team

THE SIX STAGES AT JERSEY LIVE

MAIN STAGE

DANCE STAGE

JT LIVE LOUNGE

This is where the biggest names in music work their magic. Headliners Chase & Status and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, as well as Primal Scream, Professor Green, The Stranglers and many more follow in the footsteps of past Main Stage acts including Kasabian, The Prodigy, Paul Weller and Plan B. The 18m wide Orbit stage is seen at many other festivals, including Glastonbury, where it is employed as the festival’s famous Other Stage. Many a memorable musical moment has been seen on this stage and we expect to see a few more this year.

The 1,500 capacity indoor Dance Stage Arena has been a mainstay of Jersey Live since the very first event back in 2004. Back then, DJs Jon Carter and Scratch Perverts were supported by a bill of Jersey’s top electroheads. Since then this area of the festival has grown in stature, with the likes of 2ManyDJs, Caspa, James Lavelle and Mr Oizo all headlining over the years. This year the bill is as diverse as ever, with James Zabiela, Hype, Herve, Jaymo & Andy George and FeedMe amongst the highlights, spinning drum & bass, dubstep, techno, electro, house and hip hop. The stage is set for one heck of a party.

The JT Live Lounge is brought to you by our headline sponsors JT, and first appeared at Jersey Live back in 2010. Last year saw intimate performances from legendary ska band The Beat and Brave Yesterday, as well as a host of other localacts, and this year has a bigger and even more exciting line up featuring Manchester funk outfit The Janice Graham Band, Ed Sheerancollaborator Nina Nesbitt and Scottish afro-rockers Bwani Junction, to name a few. This year, JT are going all out, showcasing the very latest in technology, powered by JT Fibre. Get FREE Wi-Fi, intimate live sets from local and UK acts, great giveaways, competitions and of course their exclusive bar, all of which can be enjoyed from the comfort of their Live Lounge and Garden. So head on down, kick back and relax. Everyone’s invited!

SOBE STAGE

HOSPITALITY STAGE

FULL FLOW TENT

The SoBe Stage returns to Jersey Live after being launched at the festival in 2009. Showcasing new and up-and-coming artists from overseas and from our very own shores, the stage has previously seen Django Django, The Antlers, We Have Band, Darwin Deez and many more perform in the early stages of their careers before going on to bigger things. Local acts including The Bloody Battle and Rosie Barrett will perform, along with Sark’s finest The Recks, and you’ll also have a chance to see Main Stagers Jake Bugg and Friends perform in a more intimate environment. For those that like to get up close and personal with top-notch bands, the SoBe Stage is the place to be.

The Hospitality Stage has become an increasingly popular part of the festival since its introduction in 2009, and has seen some unforgettable intimate live performances from Main Stage artists, including Ed Sheeran and Frank Turner, and DJ sets from the likes of Huw Stephens and Craig Charles. Craig is back again, with fellow DJs David Holmes and Smoove & Turrell, providing the soundtrack to the party. A Hospitality ticket offers all sorts of perks on top of the music, including fast-track access to the festival, complimentary flute of champagne and food voucher upon arrival, fine dining provided by Danny’s of Gorey, and a private bar in the beautifully furnished geodesic dome tent. With a line up of top DJs spinning funk, soul and house, we fully expect the Hospitality Stage to be rocking this year.

Full Flow Plumbing & Heating Services have been a longstanding ally of Jersey Live, providing the plumbing for the festival each year. It might not sound too glamorous, but it’s a vital part of making the event work! Full Flow head honcho Alan Griffin (Griff to his pals) happens to be one of the island’s most experienced DJs, and since 2010 has headed up the Full Flow Tent, hosting some of the island’s top DJs. The likes of Firethorn’s Craig Alder, Theology’s Simon Gasston, Philosophy of House’s Ross Hunter and Del McKeown, Griff himself and Jersey Live big cheese Warren Le Sueur will be taking to the decks over the weekend, playing the best in cutting edge and classic electronic delights. It’s been a big hit since first appearing here, and well worth a visit this year.

ARTISTS PROFILES B.TRAITS

ALEX CLARE It’s safe to say that singersongwriter Alex Clare has been one of the great success stories of British music in 2012. Following the release of his Major Lazerproduced debut album The Lateness of the Hour last year, his song ‘Too Close’ was used in the Internet Explorer 9 ad campaign, and since then, Clare’s profile has rocketed, with ‘Too Close’ peaking at number 4 in the UK singles charts this May as well as enjoying considerable chart success across Europe and in the US Billboard Charts. With his remarkable soulful voice married with a musical style that combines dubstep and garage, he belongs in a new bracket of electro-soul artists that includes the likes of Katy B, James Blake and Jamie Woon. With such an immense talent at his disposal, it’s no wonder that fans like Adele lend such vocal support. For fans of: Jamie Woon, James Blake, Katy B

Signed to Shy FX’s Digital Soundboy label, producerDJ B.Traits has come a long way since leaving her native Vancouver and relocating to London. Now hosting her own weekly Radio One show and having recently scored a UK Top 40 hit with her first single, we’d say her future’s looking pretty rosy indeed. With a style taking in jungle, old school rave, 90s house and UK funky, she’s something of a throwback, and we’re sure she’ll go down a storm with the dance scene veterans and newbies alike.

Commissioned by L’Office d’Jerriaise to write, arrange and produce a number of traditional Jersey-French songs in a modern pop-folk style, Badlabecques perform entirely in the ages-old language of Jersey-French, or ‘Jerriaise’ to give it is proper title. The band were a revelation at our sister festival Folklore and we expect nothing less at Jersey Live! For fans of: Mumford & Sons, Noah & the Whale, Cabadzi

BWANI JUNCTION Winners of the Scottish Alternative Music Awards and headliners on T in the Park’s BBC Introducing Stage last summer, Bwani Junction are simply one the finest bands to have come from north of the border this year. Supports with The Vaccines and Little Comets, a session with Radio One tastemaker Huw Stephens, and festival sets left, right and centre have been the fruits of their labour. Combining afrobeat and tropical styles with an experimental twist, their live show is a sunny explosion of 8

HEADLINE

CHASE & STATUS

Returning to Jersey Live in the Main Stage top slot on Saturday night are dance super-dooperstars Chase & Status. In 2010 they performed here in what was one of their first full live band shows, and on that occasion transformed the Main Stage arena into a full on rave. Two years later and they’re bigger and better than ever. Often labelled as a drum & bass outfit, their diverse output in the past few years has proven them to be much more than that. Experimenting with dubstep, electro, breakbeat, grime and rock influences, Chase & Status are becoming increasingly difficult to categorise, but one thing remains constant; their uncanny

9

knack of constantly turning out gigantic dancefloor-fillers. The platinum-selling producers have remixed and collaborated with some of the biggest names in music, including Dizzee Rascal, The Prodigy, Plan B, Cee-Lo Green and Alexandra Burke, and have managed to cross over to the world of pop music whilst commanding the utmost respect from their peers in electronic music. Pharrell Williams calls them ‘the most exciting producers in the UK today’ and Rihanna considers them ‘the backbone’ of her record Rated R, whilst the likes of dubstep king Skream and drum n’ bass pioneer Andy C hold them in equally high esteem.

With a truckload of hits to their name already, including ‘Blind Faith’, ‘Against All Odds’, ‘End Credits’, ‘Pieces’ and ‘Hitz’, Chase & Status have truly arrived as the crossover British electronic act for the 21st Century, and with a live show packed with stadium-sized dance anthems, not to mention the biggest LED light show Jersey Live has ever seen, you can rest assured that you’re in for something very special on Saturday night. For fans of: Pendulum, DJ Fresh, The Prodigy

Main Stage headliner, Saturday 22.30 – 23.30

CRAIG CHARLES

DAVID HOLMES

DELTA HEAVY

Perhaps better known by some for his on-screen roles in Red Dwarf or Coronation Street, Craig Charles has earned himself a reputation as a DJ of some standing in recent years. The success of BBC 6 Music’s Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show has generated something of a cult following, having launched on the station back in 2002 and since become the station’s longest-running show, and his live Craig Charles Funk n’ Bowl nights have become one of the hottest tickets on London’s nightlife calendar. This is Craig’s second appearance at Jersey Live after first playing here in 2009, and we’re pleased to know that the top slot on the Hospitality Stage on Saturday night is in very capable hands.

Hospitality Stage ticketholders are in for a treat on Sunday, with an exclusive (not to mention mammoth) 5 hour set by Northern Irish DJ, producer and composer David Holmes. Having first started out as a producer and DJ in Belfast in the early 90s, he has gone on to enjoy a career of immense success, collaborating with the likes of Bobby Gillepsie and Martina Topley-Bird before forming the band Free Association, and going on to make his name as a renowned movie soundtrack composer. This career path has seen him collaborate extensively with Steven Soderberg, scoring the blockbuster movies Oceans 11, 12 and 13. With a huge range of influences from house to techno to krautrock and punk, it’s likely that his DJ set at Jersey Live will be as eclectic as it is exhilarating, and it’s with great pleasure that we welcome him to the festival for the first time.

We reckon Ram Records’ much-lauded dubstep/drum & bass duo Delta Heavy are set for big things. With radio airplay and DJ support from such diverse DJs as Zane Lowe, Huw Stephens, Kissy Sell Out, Andy C and Friction, and remixes produced for Chase & Status, Avicii and Example, it’s clear that Delta Heavy have found a winning formula, and their wide appeal makes them one of those few electronic acts whose enormous beats are as at home on the dance floor as they are on mainstream radio.

For fans of: James Brown, Stevie Wonder, George Clinton

Hospitality Stage headliner, Saturday 22.15 – 23.45

For fans of: Andy C, Skream, Knife Party

Dance Stage, Sunday 18.45 – 20.00

FRIENDS DEVLIN

FEED ME

Dagenham-born Devlin has been widely acknowledged as one of the country’s most talented MCs since the release of his debut album Bud, Sweat and Beers in 2010 and his talent has not gone ignored by music press, fans and peers alike, with a MOBO Award nomination and collaborations with the likes of Wretch 32 and Labrinth adding to his reputation. With upcoming single ‘Watchtower’ (whose video stars Ed Sheeran) and a new album due out soon, he’s sure to be one of the stars of 2012, and his fanbase will be out on force in the Main Stage arena on Saturday afternoon at Jersey Live.

Set to rock the Dance Stage on Sunday night is Feed Me. Signed to Deadmau5’s Mau5trap label, the British producer has remixed Muse, Chase & Status and Gorillaz, collaborated with the likes of Skrillex and Hadouken, and with a debut album due out this year, his star is on the rise on both sides of the Atlantic. Dubstep, electro-house and moombahton are the name of the game here: expect a set that’s frantic and funky in equal measure. For fans of: Deadmau5, Skrillex, Hadouken

Hailed by The Guardian as ‘Brooklyn’s freshest, sassiest girl fronted group’ and by the NME, simply, as ‘pretty brilliant’, BBC Sound Of 2012 shortlisters Friends are the latest outfit to come off New York’s seemingly unceasing production line of great bands. Unlike their punkfunk NY predecessors of the noughties such as The Rapture, Radio 4 and LCD Soundsystem, they come with altogether smoother edges, offering a brand of funk pop which is simple, sassy and simply irresistible. For fans of: ESG, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Gossip

HYPE & 1C3 Closing the Dance Stage on Sunday is a legend of drum & bass, DJ Hype, who is joined by MC IC3. Hype has been at the forefront of the d&b scene since its emergence 20 years ago, and his journey has been a long one, from DJing on one-deck reggae soundsystems in Hackney in the early 90s, to later touring the globe and being voted Best Male DJ and Best Radio DJ in the UK Hardcore Awards, establishing his own Playaz label and taking up a residency at super club Fabric. His story is the definition of ‘paying your dues’ and he rightly takes his place at the top table of a select number of international

DJs whose place in the history of dance music’s evolution is well and truly cemented. For fans of: Dillinja, Krust, DJ Zinc

His real identity is unknown, his face concealed in live shows by his trademark ninja mask, but this has been no obstacle to his huge success, going to show that for some DJs, it really is all about the music. For fans of: Scratch Perverts, DJ Yoda, JFB

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO T AN INTERVIEW WITH THE STRANGLERS

Ladies and gents, prepare to give a warm welcome to one of the most important, one of the most brilliantly original (and wonderfully weird) bands Britain’s ever produced. Mixing a prog rock experimental inclination with a punk rock attitude (dubbed ‘Punk Floyd’ by some), The Stranglers created some of the best-known hits of the punk and new wave era, such as ‘Golden Brown’, ‘Peaches’ and ‘No More Heroes.’ They’ve consistently produced fantastic albums even into their 38th year as a band and take to the Main Stage on Sunday evening. We caught up with front man Baz Warne to find out what to expect… This is your first time at Jersey Live but not your first time performing in Jersey – do you remember your last visit? I do! We played at Fort Regent with Stiff Little Fingers. There

15

was a bit of trouble with some guys in the crowd that wanted a bit of argy bargy but it was all good fun! I’m looking forward to coming back, it’s a beautiful place. I’m hoping to take a few days off to stay there after the gig. You’ve played at a lot of quite ‘young’ festivals in recent years, like V, Benicassim, and now Jersey Live. Why do you think it is that you’ve managed to appeal to such young audiences? I think a lot of newer band are citing us as an influence, and then of course Youtube and the Internet in general makes it easier to discover bands like us. It’s not just a nostalgia thing either as we put in a lot of new material which goes down very well. Also, I think a lot of first generation fans bring their kids along to our shows! It’s funny

when you play the hits at festivals as you get a lot of people who might know the song but not necessarily know who it’s by, and you can instantly feel the surprised reaction from some people, the second you start playing them! It’s also a real buzz when you look to the side of the stage and see the other bands watching you. We played recently and had people like Stereophonics, Kaiser Chiefs and Pete Doherty watching from the side of the stage; we have a real affinity with younger bands and it’s a real compliment when they come and introduce themselves as fans or give you a pat on the back after a show. What have been your most memorable festival experiences? The first one I went to was Reading in ’88 to see The Ramones and Iggy Pop. One of

HE HEROES?

the most memorable was Glastonbury on the Other Stage in 2010. Michael Eavis had said something along the lines of ‘over my dead body will The Stranglers ever play here’, harking back to a falling-out in the ‘80s. We finally played and had a crowd of 80,000 people. There’s talk of maybe doing it again next year. Obviously the music industry has changed a lot since The Stranglers first started out, particularly so in the past decade. If you were starting out now, do you think it’d be harder or easier for a band like The Stranglers to get noticed? It’s a good question. There are pros and cons of today’s industry and the role that the Internet has in it. A pro is the speed with which ‘word of mouth’ can work. A con is there are so many people doing it, how do

you rise to the top? We’re so long in the tooth that I have no idea what we’d do if we started out now. We’re lucky that we have fantastic management and road crew. That said we’ve embraced as much technology as we want to. I’m old-fashioned though, I loved being able to look through the sleeve notes of an album, and vinyl just has a warmer sound, but some of that romance of that has been lost and we’re heading for a world where music isn’t a tangible product at all. Giants, released back in March, was your first new album in six years. How has the new material been received? Will you be playing much of it at Jersey Live? It’s gone down very well. We took time to record as organically as possible, just the four of us with minimal

overdubs, reminiscent of how the band worked in the 70s. When we play it live it has that urgency and rock n’ roll feel you can only get by sitting down and writing as 4 guys in a room. We’ve been very pleased with the press response, and we’ll probably play 4 or 5 new pieces, as well as some real old stuff that we’ll dust off, and of course the hits as well! Any final messages for the Jersey Live audience before you arrive? Expect the unexpected and behave yourselves! We’re really looking forward to playing as well as seeing the likes of Noel and Primal Scream. We can’t wait. The Stranglers perform on the Main Stage, Sunday 17.45 – 18.30

JAKE BUGG After wowing the local crowd with a solo set at Folklore earlier this summer, 18 yearold Jake Bugg returns to Jersey with his full band to perform on the Main Stage and headline the SoBe Stage at Jersey Live. A year ago he appeared on the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury and he has since signed with recording giants Universal, appeared on Later with Jools Holland, and his debut single ‘Lightning Bolt’ has been a semi-permanent fixture on the airwaves since its release in May. Influenced by the likes of Donovan and Johnny Cash, the authenticity of his folk-tinged country music belies his tender years, and he looks set to go on to big things indeed. For fans of: Donovan, Bob Dylan, Don McLean

JAMES ZABIELA

JANICE GRAHAM BAND

Following in the footsteps of previous Dance Stage headliners such as Scratch Perverts, Kissy Sell Out and Caspa is tech house starlet James Zabiela, whose turntable skills and pioneering use of scratching, loops and effects have made him one of the most sought after producer-DJs in the business, with the likes of Royksopp and Ladytron calling upon his remixing services. The legendary Sasha, who signed him to his Excession agency, refers to him as ‘the guv’nor.’ Given the stratospheric trajectory of his career and his superhuman ability on the decks, it’s not hard to see why. One of the world’s most forward-thinking DJs, his sets are trippy, bleepy and downright groovy. He comes with a big reputation and the Jersey Live audience is about to find out why.

Manchester’s Janice Graham Band have been making waves in the past year with their raucous blend of ska, soul, reggae, jazz, garage rock and samba beats, leading the likes of Stone Roses bassist Mani to earmark them as ones to watch. With comparisons being drawn to Arctic Monkeys and The Specials, the band have caught the attention of many a fan, critic and radio DJ recently. There’s already one Manchester legend at the festival in Noel Gallagher; Janice Graham Band might just represent the city’s next big thing. For fans of: Arctic Monkeys, The Specials, The Jam

JAYMO & ANDY GEORGE Since becoming the youngest ever DJs to record a live Essential Mix for Radio One, Jaymo & Andy George’s career has enjoyed a steadily 17

upwards trajectory, regularly co-hosting on Radio One with Annie Mac and Zane Lowe, and enjoying huge success with their infamous Moda parties, taking place in clubs, warehouses, theatres and boats across the globe. Their sets are a mash-up of electro, techno, disco and indie, and their party-starting expertise will undoubtedly serve them well at Jersey Live. For fans of: Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Jack Beats

Dance Stage, Saturday 18.30 – 19.45

LAST DINOSAURS Last Dinosaurs hail from Brisbane, Australia and their infectiously catchy indie pop has made such an impression that it led one magazine to declare their debut album A Million Years a contender for the best Australian album of the past two decades. Combining the sunny Afrobeat stylings of Vampire Weekend, the dance-rock percussiveness of Friendly Fires and the melodic brilliance of Bombay Bicycle Club, Last Dinosaurs are being tipped by some to at least match the success of all three. With two sets at Jersey Live over the weekend, there’s ample opportunity to witness potential stars in the making. For fans of: Friendly Fires, Vampire Weekend, Bombay Bicycle Club

LOGO Continuing a tradition of showcasing new and exciting French artists (including previously the likes of Naïve New Beaters, Gablé and Kap Bambino), Jersey Live is pleased to introduce Kitsuné’s latest new protégés, Logo. The Parisian producer duo’s ephemeral, shimmering futurist electronica has made them one of the uber-cool French label’s most exciting signings of recent years, and their addition to the Dance Stage is sure to be one of the highlights of the weekend. For fans of: We Have Band, Crystal Fighters, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs

and gritty lyrics peppered with hip hop beats has led to inevitable comparisons with Plan B. With constant mainstream radio airplay, a debut album which peaked at number 2 in the UK charts last October, collaborations with Professor Green and Chase & Status, and tours alongside Snoop Dogg and Cee Lo Green, he’s truly owned the past 12 months, and we wouldn’t bet against him enjoying the next 12 too. For fans of: Plan B, Michael Kiwanuka, Amy Winehouse

Main Stage, Saturday 18.00 – 18.45

MONTY TAFT Winner of Jersey’s Teenage Cancer Trust Spring Spectacular talent show earlier this year, 12 year-old Monty Taft is an incredible talent for such a young age. His original acoustic folk is sure to endear him to many a music lover as he opens the Main Stage at Jersey Live. For fans of: Ed Sheeran, Jake Bugg, Ben Howard

HEADLINE

NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS

“Live my life in the city, there’s no easy way out / The day’s moving just too fast for me…” This was the opening gambit from Oasis’ record-breaking debut album Definitely Maybe in 1994, striking a chord with the nation and sending the Gallagher brothers’ career into the stratosphere. Since then, Noel’s lyrics and music have been permanently etched onto the public’s conscience and, as principal songwriter with Oasis and now with his solo vehicle The High Flying Birds, he is rightly regarded as one of Britain’s greatest songwriters since Lennon and McCartney, and we’re beside ourselves with excitement to have him closing the Main Stage at Jersey Live on Sunday night. With more hits than you can shake a stick at, including ‘Live Forever’, ‘Cigarettes & Alcohol’, ‘Roll With It’, ‘Stand By Me’, 23

‘Wonderwall’, ‘The Importance of Being Idle’ and recent singles ‘Aka What a Life’ and ‘Everybody’s on the Run’, Noel’s talent has been demonstrated time and time again over the past twenty years, leading the NME to present him with their ‘Godlike Genius’ award earlier this year. One of the most decorated musicians around (with 6 Brits, 2 Ivor Novellos, 5 MTV Awards, 15 NME Awards, and 3 Grammy nominations to list a few), Noel is also one of the most publicly engaging, and often controversial, figures in music. His tempestuous relationship with brother Liam, well publicised feuds with Britpop rivals Blur and outspoken nature have ensured that the public have followed his story closely over the years, as well as cementing his status as one

of the last ‘true’ rock stars. Although you could quite happily sit and listen to him voice his opinions on everything from Manchester City to Thatcher Britain for two hours, it’s ultimately his music that does the talking, and what has secured his place in music history. With the High Flying Birds he continues to make music that’s fresh, and shows no signs of slowing down creatively. On Sunday night on the Main Stage, as well as being treated to his new solo material, there’s sure to be some gems plucked from the back catalogue, and the Jersey Live audience are in for what will surely be an unforgettable show. For fans of: Oasis, The Stone Roses, Kasabian

Main Stage headliner, Sunday 21.00 – 22.30

NINA NESBITT 17 year-old Scottish singersongwriter Nina Nesbitt has become one of the most talked-about new artists in the UK since being invited by Ed Sheeran to support and duet with him at the Shepherds Bush Empire earlier this year. Her heartfelt and passionate folk music has drawn comparisons with the likes of Laura Marling, and with support tours alongside Sheeran and Example, as well as her first headline UK tour, already this year, she’s winning over truckloads of new fans by the day. A unique talent, and one we advise you not to miss out on.

ONEOFAKIND Guernsey’s Andre De Carteret aka DJ Oneofakind, is a regular on the Jersey scene, his vast record collection, dedication to vinyl, and penchant for funk, broken beat, soul, reggae, roots, disco and hip-hop rarities concreting his reputation as one of the finest DJs operating in the Islands today.

PRIMAL SCREAM

South Coast-based PVC are one of Jersey’s finest (and noisiest) musical exports of recent years and this will be their third appearance at Jersey Live. Combining the math-rock rhythmic wonkiness of Foals with the in-your-face ferocity of Gallows, the quartet’s live show is a masterclass in controlled mayhem.

Performing on the Main Stage on Sunday evening is a band who have left an indelible mark on music since their formation in the mid-eighties. Fronted by the irrepressible Bobby Gillespie, Primal Scream etched their name into the annals of music history with the seminal 1991 album Screamadelica. Along with the efforts of The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, the album is credited with bridging the gap between indie rock and acid house and opening up the newly emerging techno and dance music scenes to a mainstream rock audience. Tracks like ‘Loaded’ and ‘Movin’ On Up’ were hailed for their uplifting psychedelic splendor, and won them that year’s Mercury Prize, as well as ensuring the album would regularly feature on ‘Best Albums Ever’ polls over the next two decades. Following that up with smash hit albums such as Evil Heat and XTRMNTR, the band have remained fresh and relevant through constant experimentation and reinvention, dabbling with electro-rock and retro rock n’ roll styles along the way. With a huge back catalogue to draw on, the likes of ‘Rocks’, ‘Country Girl’ and ‘Swastika Eyes’ are likely to feature in their Main Stage set, which is sure to be an anthem-laden one.

PROFESSOR GREEN

THE RECKS

RIZZLE KICKS

We’re delighted to welcome back Professor Green to Jersey Live, an artist who first came here as a star on the rise in 2010, and returns a bona fide A-lister of British music. After wining the £50,000 top prize in the 2008 Jumpoff Myspace rap battle, he announced his mainstream arrival with the critically and commercially triumphant debut album Alive Til I’m Dead, and has racked up a string of hit singles including ‘Just Be Good To Green’, ‘Jungle’, and the chart-topping ‘Read All About It’ alongside guest vocalist Emeli Sandé, taken from his second album At Your Inconvenience. Acerbic wit, gritty lyrics straight from the tower blocks of Hackney and anthemic choruses are all key to his success, as has been his knack for putting on an unforgettable live show – as he’ll no doubt demonstrate on the Main Stage on Saturday night.

After wowing the audience at our sister festival Folklore, getting Sark-based folkies The Recks back here for Jersey Live was a no-brainer. Their oddball folk music is infused with elements of jazz, klezmer, blues and surf guitar, underpinned by darkly gothic lyrics, bringing to mind the likes of Devendra Banhart and Tom Waits.

Please reserve a warm Jersey Live welcome for the UK’s brightest young hip-hop duo Rizzle Kicks. The Brightonborn Brit School graduates Jordan “Rizzle” Stephens and Harley “Sylvester” Alexander-Sule have established themselves as one of the UK’s biggest musical success stories in the past 12 months, having sold over a million singles and 300,000 albums in the UK. Their old school-style hip hop has fun and eclecticism at its heart, with ska, mariachi and bluegrass all providing the backdrop to the duo’s slick rhymes. Public endorsements from the likes of Damon Albarn, Jessie J and even Stephen Fry, tours with Dizzee Rascal and Professor Green, a number one single as guests on Olly Murs’ ‘Heart Skips a Beat’ and three MOBO nominations have been the rewards of a huge year for the duo, but we’ve got a feeling that, for the young, talented and eminently likeable Rizzle Kicks, there are plenty more successes ahead.

ROSIE BARRETT

THE STRANGLERS

Since first appearing on the local live circuit last year, singer-songwriter Rosie Barrett has quickly charmed the socks off a loyal Jersey following, supporting Nerina Pallot at her homecoming show at the Opera House and opening the Main Stage at Folklore festival in June. Her soulful acoustic folk balladry has proven a hit on the big stage, and is the perfect thing to kick off proceedings on the SoBe Stage on Sunday afternoon.

With a career spanning 40 years and spawning 17 UK Top 40 albums and 23 UK Top 40 singles, including classics like ‘Golden Brown’, ‘Peaches’ and ‘No More Heroes’, The Stranglers are the longest-running band from the 1970s punk explosion and we’re over the moon to have them gracing the Main Stage on Sunday evening. One of the more psychedelically-orientated bands of the punk scene, their use of keyboards and clear Doors influence marked them out from their peers such as The Sex Pistols, The Damned and The Clash, as did their surreal lyrical style. They are no strangers to Jersey, having last performed live in the island in 2002, and we’re delighted to welcome them back.

For fans of: Joan Armatrading, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez

SoBe Stage, Sunday 14.35 – 15.05

SCHEMA Jersey’s favourite electronic schemers make a welcome return to the Dance Stage after making regular appearances here in recent years. Signed to Jay Cunning’s Sub Slayers label and Cut La Roc’s Rocstar agency, they’ve made a name for themselves locally and on the UK mainland, their molotov cocktail of dubstep, jungle and breakbeat winning plaudits for its relentless bass-heavy

SMOOVE & TURRELL (DJ/PA Soundsystem Set) As a live duo, vocalist John Turrell and producer Smoove have been one of the UK’s most talked about new acts since their debut album release Antique Soul in 2009. From being completely unknown, the northern soul outift have since performed before 10,000 strong audiences at Glastonbury and DJ’d at festivals and clubs all over Europe. With BBC 6 Music’s Craig Charles a staunch supporter of the duo on his 6 Music Show, their back-to-back DJ/PA soundsystem sets at Jersey Live make for an ideal pairing.

THOMAS GANDEY

U.G. & B-EAZY

THE VALENTINES

Under his former guise as Cagedbaby, Berlin and London-based producer Thomas Gandey was formerly known for his poppy tech-disco style, which saw him tour the world with the likes of Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Brothers and Underworld, as well as writing and producing for such huge artists as David Byrne and Shirley Bassey. However, under his real name, he has broadened his palate by adding tech and deep house to his trademark disco sound. With a staggering 150 remixes and 1,000 live shows under his belt, he’s one of the busiest and most respected figures in the business, and has played practically every international club and festival worth its salt. At Jersey Live you can expect a set that’s sexy, sophisticated and packed with dancefloor-fillers.

Jersey’s music scene has seen something of a surge of young rappers in recent times, and two of the most talented and popular have undoubtedly been MCs B-Eazy and London-born U.G. With socially-conscious lyrics and slick rhymes over thumping hip hop and dubstep beats, they’re a force to be reckoned with. We recommend you check them out on Saturday afternoon.

Brighton-based indie pop outfit The Valentines have been Jersey Live regulars since first appearing on the Main Stage here way back in 2005. The local boys have never failed to impress at the festival, their fusion of punk, doo-wop and garage rock influences combining with a knack for soaring anthems and unforgettable melodies to make for one heck of a live show. Support slots with The Libertines, radio airplay on Radio One, 6 Music and XFM, and an upcoming record release on indie label End of the Trail are just a few of the notable achievements on their CV. Fans of The Strokes, The Ramones and Supergrass are sure to approve.

THE WISDOM OF NOEL GALLAGHER

by The Jam, ‘I Am The Walrus’ by The Beatles, ‘I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You’ by The Bee Gees, ‘My Generation’ by The Who, ‘Hand In Glove’ by The Smiths, ‘Waterloo Sunset’ by The Kinks and ‘Looking Glass’ by The La’s.

There’s not much that isn’t known about Noel Gallagher, what with him being a big old megastar and all. We could have told you that he likes Manchester City, or that he doesn’t like Blur much, but you already knew that. We dug around for a few factoids that you might not have known… 1.

The first concert he ever went to was punk pioneers The Damned at the Manchester Apollo in 1980.

2. Noel joined a newlyformed Oasis in 1991, after turning down an invitation from brother Liam to become their manager. 3. His favourite songs are ‘Hound Dog’ by Elvis Presley, ‘We Love You’ by The Rolling Stones, ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ by Bob Dylan, ‘Strange Town’

29

4. His favourite colour is brown. 5. His chlldhood nickname was Breshnev after the former Russian president who was known for his bushy eyebrows. 6. Before joining the onlyjust-formed Oasis, Noel was a roadie with Madchester rockers Inspiral Carpets. Before that he was a fish tankmaker. 7.

Noel adopted two stray cats that he named ‘Benson’ and ‘Hedges.’

8. Some of Noel’s more high profile friends include Mani, Richard Ashcroft, John Lydon, Kasabian, Ricky Hatton, Paul McCartney, Jamie Carragher, Chris Martin, Johnny Marr, Paul Weller, Ian Brown, John Squire, Jack Dee and Johnny Depp. 9. At the age of 15, Noel was expelled from school for throwing a bag of flour over a teacher. Dennis the Menace would be proud. 10. In 2011 he was approached by Simon Cowell to become a judge on X Factor. He declined. Another prominent Mancunian songwriter, Gary Barlow, did not.

A HISTORY OF JERSEY LIVE

2004

2005

2006

2007

This marked the very first year of Jersey Live festival, ushering in a new era of world class bands and DJs in the Channel Islands. A one day event with a capacity of just 4,000, Jersey Live 2004 featured two stages: the Positiv Main Stage and the Theory Dance Arena. The former was headlined by Irish pop-rockers The Thrills and also featured The Open, The Delays, The Subways and a fledgling Razorlight as well as local boys Wilmor, Repeater and The Merge. The Dance Arena meanwhile hosted JL favourites Scratch Perverts, Jon Carter and Leftfield’s Paul Daley. It was deemed a huge success, and Jersey Live was born.

Jersey Live remained a one-day event but returned with a bigger and better line up headlined by the now-rock royalty Kasabian, supported by the likes of Art Brut, The Futureheads, The Bravery and The Ordinary Boys, as well as local indie outfit The Valentines, who have been a regular JL fixture ever since. The Dance Arena line up featured cult Belgian mash-up favourites 2ManyDJs, as well as Whitey and The Glimmers. A scorching hot day and an increased capacity of 7,500 ensured that this topped Jersey Live’s successful debut. It also marked the start of the festival’s longstanding partnership with JT.

Maintaining a capacity of 7,500, Jersey Live expanded to one full day and an evening of music, with The Levellers, Sandi Thom and Nick Harper amongst the Main Stage artists on the Friday. The Saturday bill included headliners Snow Patrol as well as Editors, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly and The Zutons, as well as big name comperes in Radio One’s Zane Lowe and Edith Bowman. The drizzle did little to dampen the spirits of festival-goers, but for those that chose not to brave the rain, there was a whole different party going on in the Dance Arena, where Erol Alkan, Ivan Smagghe, Riton, c2c and UNKLE’s James Lavelle were manning the decks.

2007 marked Jersey Live’s expansion to a full two day festival with a line up packed with huge names on the Main Stage, including a returning Kasabian, Welsh psychedelic stars Super Furry Animals (whose riotous racket blew the PA temporarily), indie darlings of the moment The Fratellis, Pigeon Detectives and The Enemy, as well as a heavyweight Dance Arena bill featuring Digitalism, Boys Noize, DJ Format and Steve Lawler to name a few. A surprise highlight of the weekend came in the form of Belgian live electro outfit Goose.

31

2008

2009

2010

2011

A pivotal point in the evolution of the festival, this event saw the organisers pull out all the stops with a star’ studded line up topped by dance A-listers The Prodigy and packed with big names including Foals, The Go! Team, We Are Scientists, Kissy Sell Out and Krafty Kuts. It also saw the festival increase to a 10,000 capacity and the addition of the Tease area and Silent Disco, hosting local live acts and DJs respectively. Main Stage compere Mani (Stone Roses/Primal Scream) declared it a success, saying “for a small island like Jersey to have a festival like this is great… it’s a great day.”

Jersey Live continues to expand, with the addition of the Les Inrocks Stage (now the SoBe Stage) hosting up-andcoming acts including Kap Bambino and The Antlers, as well as the Hospitality Stage, which saw intimate sets from a young Frank Turner amongst others. Meanwhile, the Main Stage and Dance Arena boasted arguably its strongest line up to date, with Dizzee Rascal, Doves, Basement Jaxx, Beardyman, Andy C and Dan Le Sac & Scroobius Pip amongst the highlights. Around 9,000 people descended upon Jersey Live each day, the festival’s highest ever attendance at the time.

2010 saw the festival sell out in advance for the first time since expanding to a 10,000 capacity event, with a packed arena enjoying memorable sets from ‘the Modfather’ Paul Weller, Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro, then-emerging rapper Tinie Tempah and this year’s headliners Chase & Status. The likes of dubstep pioneer Caspa and electro-pop idol Calvin Harris starred in the Dance Arena, and as well as the continuation of the Hospitality, Les Inrocks and Tease Stages, the Full Flow Tent was introduced, hosting the island’s top DJ talent.

Another sell-out Jersey Live, with 10,000 happy festival-goers in attendance to witness a raucous headline performance by ska legends Madness, one of the last ever live appearances by garage pioneer The Streets and soulster Plan B. Meanwhile Zane Lowe and Mr Oizo kept the Dance Arena jumping, the likes of nu-folkies Dry The River and King Charles wowed the crowd on the newly renamed SoBe Stage, indie starlet Ed Sheeran blew the roof off the Hospitality Stage before an intimate crowd of just 500, and local bands The Bloody Battle, Lizzard Channel and Lloyd Yates Band went down a storm on the Tease Stage. Will it be topped by JL 2012?

CRAIG CHARLES’ DESERT ISLAND DISCS

Craig Charles returns to Jersey Live to headline the Hospitality Stage on Saturday night after an unforgettable performance here back in 2009. As presenter of BBC 6 Music’s Funk & Soul Show, he’s a connoisseur of all things smooth n’ groovy; we caught up with him to find out what tunes are floating his boat at the moment… You’ve DJ’d at Jersey Live once before– what lured you back? I love Jersey and I love the guys that organise it. I couldn’t make it last year but I’m glad to be invited back. It’s just a great weekend and we don’t finish partying ‘til we’re on the plane back! Who are you looking forward to checking out at Jersey Live? Smoove & Turrell [fellow Hospitality Stage DJs] are brilliant; Antique Soul was amazing but they exceeded it with their latest album. And obviously Noel, I can’t wait to see him play and hopefully I’ll get a chance to have a chat with him. 35

As a radio and live DJ, do you find that with age, you still have the same passion for finding new music? We love discovering new bands on 6 Music, it’s a great feeling breaking new bands. Amy Winehouse did her first session with us, her first interview was with us and although it ended tragically, it was amazing to see her become the international diva that she became. So, you’re now known as something of a connoisseur of funk n’ soul, so let’s do a Desert Island Discs-style thing. What are your top five tracks of the moment? 1: Mario Biondi & The High 5 Quintet, ‘This Is What You Are’ “It’s really chilled out southern music, and the track’s from 2004. He’s a superstar in Italy but his English isn’t great which has hindered him a little, so he hasn’t quite crossed over yet. But I don’t believe you wouldn’t think it’s the best thing you’ve ever heard.” 2: Cody Chestnut, ‘Look Good In Leather’

“It’s kind of a novelty record, from an album called The Headphone Masterpiece, but it’s such a cool, groovy tune, perfect for dancing to at 2 o’clock in the morning.” 3: Gil Scott-Heron, ‘B Movie’ “I know all the words to it, the whole ten minutes of it. It’s a real lesson in American history and it’s got such a groove, such a wiggle on it.” 4: Funkanomics, ‘Superstition’ “It’s a remix of the Stevie Wonder classic, and it’s simply IMMENSE. I defy anyone not to dance to it. If you don’t dance to it, you’re probably dead!” 5: The Reflex, ‘I Wish’ “This is another Stevie Wonder rework. If you’re not dancing to ‘Superstition’ ‘cause you’re dead, this’ll bring you back to life! The last 2 of these choices I’ll be playing at Jersey Live and we’ll need a new roof by the time we’re done!” Craig Charles headlines the Hospitality Stage, Saturday 22.15 – 23.45

OTHER THINGS TO SEE AT JERSEY LIVE

FOOD & SHOPPING VILLAGE This year at Jersey Live, our food and shopping village is bigger and better than ever. As well as arts and crafts, merchandise, face-painting stalls and the Oxygen Bar, you’ll also find a wide array of gastronomic delights on offer, provided by the festival’s head chef Andy Taylor of Gorey’s Café Louise. There are a wide range of options for vegetarians and carnivores alike, including burgers, hot dogs, curries, pastas, baguettes, salads, all made with the freshest ingredients of course. Meanwhile in the Hospitality area, top chef Danny Moisan will be cooking up a storm, with curries, soups and tagines the order of day. Be sure to grab a bite to eat before heading off to enjoy the music – bon appétit!

BARS

WELFARE TENT

As well as the Main Bars, stocking Stella 4, Becks VIER, Britvic soft drinks and a range of spirits, you’ll also find a St Helier Cider Tent, Dunells Wine Bar, and a Real Ale Tent – plenty of options for quenching your thirst then. It goes without saying of course, but you must be 18 or over to purchase alcohol, and we employ a CHALLENGE 25 Policy; if you’re lucky enough to look 25 or under, you’ll be asked to prove that you are 18 or over. You will need an age verification wristband, which will be issued on production of valid photographic ID and your festival ticket. We also remind you to drink responsibly!

This year, Jersey Youth Service will manage a welfare tent, a new addition to Jersey Live. This tent will serve as a reception and office that festivalgoers can visit to find out any essential information, get assistance with any issues they may have, and look after any lost children. It will also serve as an area for anyone that may be distressed and simply need a moment to chill out.

PAR 4 A brand new addition to Jersey Live, and one that you won’t want to miss out on! With cabaret, burlesque and street performers, puppeteers, vaudeville shows and vintage parties throughout the weekend, as well as fancy dress stalls, Par 4 will twist your mind sideways, twist it back again, then twist it some more just for the heck of it. In a nice way of course.

FUNFAIR The funfair returns to the festival after being successfully introduced at Jersey Live 2011. There’ll be fun and thrilling rides for adults and kids alike, including Dodgems, Waltzers, Kids Cars and a few surprises!

TEENAGE CANCER TRUST – JERSEY LIVE’S CHARITY FOR 2012! Each year Jersey Live teams up with a local children’s charity, to which we donate all proceeds of children’s (12 & under) tickets sold over the festival weekend. With between 800-900 children visiting the festival each year, it’s a great way for us to give something back to our local community and this year’s chosen charity is Teenage Cancer Trust (Jersey). Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival in teenage cancer sufferers, through setting up specialist units within NHS hospitals (there are currently 22, which each cost between £500,000 - £3.5million to build and equip), providing family support networks, offering specialist training for nurses and health professionals, providing education and advice, and by funding research into teenage cancer medicine. Some of their high profile supporters include Noel Fielding, Roger Daltrey, Tinchy Stryder, Edith Bowman and Jersey Live 2012 headliner Noel Gallagher. Teenage Cancer Trust (Jersey) are aiming to raise the further £700,000 needed to fund a £2.4 million specialist treatment unit in Southampton for Channel Island teenagers living with cancer, with the target of opening next summer. The new Teenage Cancer Trust unit in Southampton will be aimed at 16 – 24 year-old cancer patients living across the region, including the Channel Islands, to be treated with others their own age, in an environment suited to their needs. The unit will provide 10 in-patient beds plus open-plan social and recreation areas, a kitchen and dining area for patients and parents, four day-care spaces, digital lighting systems, broadband connectivity, and cutting edge computing, gaming, music, and entertainment equipment.

As well as receiving proceeds from children’s tickets, Teenage Cancer Trust have a stall set up on site and staffed over the weekend by volunteers who will be on hand to provide festival-goers with information all about the charity’s sterling work. As part of our partnership with Teenage Cancer Trust, the winner of the charity’s annual Spring Spectacular talent search, Monty Taft, will open the festival Main Stage on Saturday afternoon. The 12 year-old guitarist and singer wowed the judges and we’re sure he’ll impress you too! Also taking part at Jersey Live are Spring Spectacular finalists, dance crew SFS. The trio, Scott Kean, Aiden Ward and Wilson Silva, have since gone on to win gold at the Dance World Cup in Austria in June, making them officially the ‘world’s best hip-hop dance trio.’ They’ll be taking to the Main Stage for a performance before hip-hop stars Rizzle Kicks take to the Main Stage on Saturday evening.
