the front

In the age of tweets and texts, BBMs and blogs,

now more than ever the on-the-go college girl needs a filter to thrash out what’s TMI and must-read news. With that in mind, my staff and I set out to produce a digital magazine packed with a mix of everything you want (fashion, beauty and entertainment) and everything you need (the scoop on how to get ahead in your out-ofthe-classroom endeavors).   To help you navigate the roundthe-clock news cycle, we’ve created In the Know (p. 9), a roundup of items sure to keep you informed on what’s going on in the world around you. Digest, the home of articles on careers, relationships, current affairs, along with pieces about the successes and struggles of real girls like you, will reinforce our mission to help you realize that college is more than the classroom. And be sure to check out Notebook on p. 15, a compendium of lifestyle tidbits that makes it easier to decide how you’ll spend the precious down time you have at your disposal.   A girl’s gotta look good and feel good too, right? For a quick look at the latest happenings in the fashion world and why it matters to you, Study Guide is your source; and because we could all use a little retail therapy, JAYE Shopper will endeavor to bring you a combination of savvy steals and lust-inducing splurges guaranteed to fit your evolving wardrobe. (On p. 46, we offer up fresh ways to wear denim, inspired by four of favorite celebrities.) As a back-of-book treat, our monthly Cheat Sheet will supply you with tips on how to wear the latest looks dominating the style stratosphere. (I particularly love the grungy grandpa sweater look inspired by Adam’s fall collection featured on p. 114, one of the four menswear-influenced trends we feature in the section.)   But our work isn’t done. Over the next few months, we’ll be introducing a bigger and better beauty section guided by our on-staff glam guru Margaret Francois, and our features team is working hard to incorporate irresistible and intelligent stories on the people, places and things that matter to you — stay tuned!   As Thanksgiving draws near, I can’t help but extend my most humble gratitude to you for your steadfast support of this magazine. You’re the fuel that keeps me going when the going gets tough and you have our complete dedication to assemble a magazine worth your time each month. Forward a link of the magazine to a friend (or two!), post it online, spread the word—and most importantly, let us know how we’re doing at jayemagmike@gmail.com. In the meantime, have a ball reading the issue! Michael Jones Editor-in-Chief

Coming in four flavors (peanut butter and grape jelly, peanut butter and strawberry jelly, pepperoni pizza and barbeque chicken), the product is aimed for people on the go. The unique sandwich canister is designed to be durable in different modes of transportation, whether it’s a hike, a quick jaunt to class or biking. let’s talk about sex According to Yahoo!, a study proves high school students who were in a committed, sexual relationship actually do no worse, or better academically than students who do not have sex. The study showed students who hook up, have sex without any emotional commitment, do poorer academically and have more school related problems. Those who are in a committed relationship tend to do better in school because they may find support and comfort from their partner.

Expanding the size of theater seats and designing plussized clothes for toddlers are just a couple of ways businesses have inflated with the times Movie theaters and auditoriums across America are beginning to accommodate the ever-growing size of movie patrons by installing larger theater seats. Previously, theater seats have only grown two inches from 1900 to 1990, but in the past 20 years another inch has been added on, making seats 22-inches wide. The seat adjustments are not only due to weight increases but from height increases as well. Unfortunately, bigger theater seats mean higher theater costs and fewer seats per theater. The size and cost of auditoriums have grown 30 percent since 1990. The wide seats can also cause patrons to be more likely to slouch in their seats and lose focus on the films.

British retailer, Marks & Spenser have begun carrying plus-sized clothing for toddlers. The garments have two-and-a-half extra inches added to the waist. Childhood obesity is on the rise in the United Kingdom where one in four children are considered obese. The line offers boot cut pants and other items that are proportionally flattering to larger shapes for children ages 3 to 16. Marks & Spenser defend the line saying that it is a result of customer demand and continuation of the line depends on the customer response, Britain’s Daily Telegraph reported. Speak your mind: Do you think businesses are glorifying obesity or simply responding to consumer demands? E-mail us at jayespeakyourmind@gmail.com and you could be in a future issue!

Worth It or Wack? American Airlines has announced they will be charging an extra fee for “Express Seats”—the first two or three rows of seats in the coach cabin. For $19 to $39 you can have these seats and the opportunity to board the airplane as part of the first in “general boarding”. Customers do not get much for the extra fee, such as extra legroom. The airline says boarding the flight first is a high propriety for fliers. The rows included in the extra fee vary on the type of airplane it is. American Airlines will only be selling “express seats” at the airport check-in 24 hours to 50 minutes before the flight for domestic flights. Frequent fliers can book these seats for no extra charge.

Find Yourself in The Social Network By Emily Ramsey The Social Network, in theaters now, recounts Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s trials surrounding the network’s creation: the lawsuits, the consequences that come with wealth, the instant admiration from peers, especially the females. It’s the ageold story of sex, greed and money. But Facebook has also

taught us that social networks can be viable brand builders. To stand out from the cluttered landscape, follow our tips: ■ Identify your brand. Where do you want to go and how do you want to get ther? Make five year, ten year, and fifteen year plans to determine long-and-shortterm goals. ■ Design promotional materials. Invest in concise business cards with a professional e-mail address: firstname.lastname@ server.com. Consider a Gmail

address due to Google’s mainstream appeal. (Also, check out www.businesscard2.com for a digital business cards.) Create a LinkedIn profile to post your resume and links to an online portfolio. ■ Build a presence on other networks. Facebook is the obvious frontrunner, but Twitter is another insta-connector. If you choose more than one network, use www.ping.fm, a free Web service that helps save time by posting to all of your social networks at once. ■ Join social groups. Post

regularly on discussion boards, add interesting event and news links to your posts, stimulate conversation by introducing new topics for discussion. A great resource for learning more about professional networking is www. mashable.com. ■ Start a blog. Blogging is a great way to attract search engines, build credibility in your field and interact with potential clients. Don’t forget to link blog posts to your profiles on other networks. Combat the Cholesterol Connundrum

Improve Your Health and Make a Difference

Recently-completed long-term studies reveal that volunteering 100 hours per year—equivalent to just two hours per week!—brings about heightened emotional, mental and physical well-being. Check out some of the discovered “side effects” of volunteering:

By Emily Ramsey

dishes and processed foods with long shelf life.   But wait — don’t start those no-fat diets just yet. Our bodies need fat. In fact, it’s essential for a well-functioning body, as is cholesterol. We need good fats, such as, almonds, pumpkin seeds, avocados, eggs, fish and olive oil.   Another food group largely lacking in the average college student’s diet is something that has the power to greatly reduce LDL cholesterol, build HDL and be eaten on the go with hardly any preparation time: vegetables.   According to WebMD researchers have found that persons who consume a generous amount of veggies, around 4-5 servings, or cups, per day, will, among other things, feel more energized, have a healthier complexion and more control over weight gain — all of this due to the body’s added nutrients and subsequent efficiency induced by vegetables.   More benefits include a decreased risk of cancer and a stronger immune system.

I

don’t know about you, but when I hear the word “cholesterol,” I think of my parents and varicose veins.     That’s because society usually connects ill health to old age, which causes young people to give it little or no thought.   But I wondered: Is that an accurate assumption? After some lengthy research, I determined it is not.   Scientists are bringing to light the need to not just think about, but also to change, cholesterol-building eating habits in young people.   Case in point: a recent study from Medical News 20 november 2010 jaye.com

Today that verified my fears — it really is true that what we do when we’re young can hugely impact us later in life. The 20-year study showed that young adults between ages 18 and 30, who had heightened levels of cholesterol, were more inclined to develop heart disease in their 40s. Eek! Once I learned this, I wanted to know more about cholesterol.   Most of us probably remember learning about HDL and LDL, “good” and “bad,” cholesterol in science class. These types enter our body through corresponding “good” or “bad” fats that inhabit the food we eat, which are, many times, bad choices including most fast foods, breaded or battered

Sigh… So, Mom was right: healthy eating habits are important, right now! We’re always on the run, so how can we thwart the impact of catostraphic cholesterol?   Never fear, listed below are two simple snack recipes that can be pre-prepared so you won’t have to use your brain when you’re in the 7 a.m., I’m-gonna-belate-for-class haze. Trail Mix Combine walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds and raisins (for extra flavor) to satisfy mid-morning and predinner munchies—note: dark chocolate can also be added for you chocoholics. But keep portions in mind. Walnuts and almonds carry a good amount of calories, thanks to their high levels of good fats. Veggie Platter Pre-bag a mixture of broccoli, celery, cauliflower and carrots. If that flavor profile sounds unappealing to your taste buds, toss organic apple cider vinegar on top to add some spice or throw a few tablespoons of organic ranch dressing in a container for dipping. □

d Diane Keaton an ragons Woody Allen: Pa omeof the romantic-c e dy and stars of thnie Hall. classic movie An

Since I was a little girl, I’ve had these pictures burned in the back of my mind: Lloyd Dobbler standing under Diane Court’s window holding a stereo over his head with Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” blaring from its speakers in Say Anything.   Or Holly and Fred dash-

ing down the sidewalk after stealing animal masks from a five-and-dime store in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.   And I can’t forget Paul telling Corie, “Even when I didn’t like you, I loved you” in Barefoot in the Park. Then there’s Harry finding Sally at a New Year’s Eve party and proclaiming, “I

came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible” in When Harry Met Sally.   In my Holy Grail of romantic comedies, Pretty Woman, Edward reenacting Vivian’s White Knight fantasy from her childhood by using an umbrella as his sword and a limousine as his horse, as he yells “Princess Vivian!” at the flick’s conclusion.   These were more than just films. These were rom-coms during a time when the romance was a mirror of reality, instead of a steady stream of the same characters living the same lives; before someone decided the comedic element was more important than the romance.   As I try to explain to a guy I barely know that I can’t return his romantic feelings because, well, I barely know him, I think about how Diane, Vivian or Corie would handle this situation.

5 TV Shows that Sizzled & Quickly Fizzled One minute, you’re sitting dying for the next episode, and the next, you’ll watch anything else on television. What turns a good show into a bad one?

We’ve all been there, revolving our lives around a television show and scouring blogs for any clue about who hooks up and who breaks up on the next episode. After a string of breakups, random hook-ups, deaths and, at times, reincarnations, your feelings change. One day, a mild obsession turns into indifference and when the show gets canceled, you barely notice.

Most people just accept their change of heart about a show, but behind every cancelation is a story: Freaks and Geeks (18 Episodes) Plot: Siblings Lindsay and Sam Weir try to navigate their way through high school in 1980. While Lindsay is busy trying to befriend the “Freaks,” a group that include James Franco, in a rebellious attempt

I Want My Old Rom-Com Back!

JAYE’s Features Director Brianti Downing is fed up with today’s romantic comedy. Luckily, she has nostalgic recollections to to tide her over until Hollywood gets the memo: Enough of the unrealistic, wam-bam flicks and more fanciful tales of true love and overcoming obstacles

When he expresses frustration with me because he won’t be getting anything more than a hug at the end of the night (he didn’t even get that), which he swears has never happened after he has expressed his romantic interests to a woman, I realize his previous experiences reflect the situations from the modern romantic comedy.   It’s always the same series of events: a comedic and unusual meet-cute of the two delightfully mismatched romantic leads, followed by an awkward date or two, a montage that spans anywhere from days to years, a parting of ways over something silly, a heartfelt apology and a make-up kiss (cue the violin). And, poof!—roll the credits.   Sure, I had a meet-cute with this guy, we were mismatched and the time we spent together was definitely awkward, but we skipped the montage, parted ways and went straight to the credits.   Romantic comedies >> to shun her “mathelete” past, Sam tries his best to accept his geek status and survive his freshman year of high school. The show, created by Judd Apatow (director of Knocked Up) also features Seth Rogen and Jason Segel in their youth. Downfall: The show received great reviews, but when it was clear that not even sexy, young Franco could attract viewers, FOX pulled the plug. >>

The O.C. (92 episodes) Plot: When Ryan, a juvenile delinquent with untapped potential, is busted for helping his brother commit a crime, his public defender, Sandy Cohen, takes him into his home and introduces him to the highclass world of Orange County. Ryan befriends Seth, Sandy’s son, Seth; falls in love with the Marissa (played by Mischa Barton), the girl next door; and tries to adjust to a life of ritzy parties and elite schools. Downfall: After a string of make ups and break ups between Ryan and Marissa, along with the same from every other couple on the show, and a string of character deaths, viewers started to lose interest. When Marissa died at the end of season three, the show followed right behind, ending in its fourth season. Skin (8 Episodes) Plot: Remember Romeo & Juliet from 9th grade English class? In this spin on the Shakespearean classic, Adam is the son of the L.A. District Attorney and Jewel is the daughter of a pornographer. The star-crossed lovers must hide their love from their parents or they could reach the same end as Romeo and Juliet. Since FOX only aired three episodes, most viewers didn’t get much more info. Downfall: After a major ad campaign, critics hated it

and viewers ran in the other direction. Before anyone could drink a 46-hour coma inducing potion or take poison, like the characters in the play, FOX canceled the show. 10 Things I Hate About You (20 Episodes) Plot: ABC Family’s small-screen turn on the romantic film, based on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. Much like the film, the show mostly focused on the love lives of sisters Kat and Bianca Stratford who are such opposites they could be from different planets. The film starred the late Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. Downfall: Either the tweens the show was aimed at noticed the mediocre quality of the show or watched the film version and decided the series was too far off. Viewers stopped watching and ABC stopped production. The Beautiful Life (2 Episodes) Plot: The CW’s Ashton Kutcherproduced drama about New York City models trying to break into the business only lasted for two episodes. Downfall: Surprisingly, the summer buzz about Mischa Barton’s return to television died before the first show aired, only bringing in 1.5 million viewers. When the second episode only got an audience of 1 million, the CW canceled the show. Now's who's been Punk'd, Ashton?

twined in the future.   Something like that takes time. When I have to sit through movies like, The Ugly Truth and The Bounty Hunter, I realize how low the genre has sunk.   Everything happens so fast and we know more about the romantic leads than they know about one another. The happy ending is really just

a precursor to their next break-up because two people so horribly mismatched and so foreign to one another can never really be together. Realizing that our notions of love are so far from reality is sad. When I’m sad, there’s only one cure: watching Woody Allen and Diane Keaton’s characters fall in love in Annie Hall.

Top 10 Reality Show Villains By Brittney Fennell

Reality shows are our guilty pleasure, but it wouldn’t be as fun to watch without the mischief-makers that enkindle the most drama. Here, just in time for the third season of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, our list of the reality show villains we love to hate—but can’t stop watching. 10. Angelina, Jersey Shore Angelina never fit in with the cast of Jersey Shore. She called herself the “Kim Kardashian” of the house. She left the show early and, with all the drama on the Shore, we forgot her completely. Angelina plans to prove in season two of Jersey Shore that she is not the backstabber people think she is. Let’s hope this season she gets along with her cast mates and stays long enough for viewers to remember her. 9. Kim Zolciak, The Real Housewives of Atlanta Atlanta housewife Kim Zolciak never skimps on the drama. She has talked behind friends’ backs and all too often been caught in her own web of fibs. Her friendships with Atlanta housewives Nene Leakes and Sheree Whitfield have proven to be failures, and her short-lived music career produced the one-hit wonder Tardy for the Party. Season 3 of Housewives is back and, and viewers are ready for more of Zolciak's theatrics. 8. Olivia Paliermo, The City The uptight co-star of The City shows that having a good time and opening up, is a hard job, we may think. Paliermo manages to cause trouble wherever she works, whether it’s the offices of fashion designer Diane von Furstenburg or ELLE magazine. Paliermo’s constant disregard for authority is so out of control that during Fashion Week, she didn’t show up to do on-camera interviews for an ELLE.com assignment. Yet, she still manages to keep her job—a talent we hate and love at the same time!

7. Omarosa Manigault, The Apprentice and The Ultimate Merger Omarosa was one of the first reality stars that America despised, and who could blame her adversaries: Her conniving and backstabbing ways on the first season of Donald Trump’s reality show The Apprentice made Omarosa the show’s public enemy number one. Not that she’s complaining. Omarosa has managed to bank on her hated image and has even landed her own reality show on TVOne, The Ultimate Merger, where men competed for her love. 6. Kristin Cavallari, The Hills Who could forget Kristin? Since her high school days on the pre-Hills turmoil tavern Laguna Beach, which portrayed her onand-off relationship with Stephen Colletti and notorious feud with do-no-wrong good girl Lauren Conrad, Miss Cavallari has been a reality-show staple. Since taking over The Hills for the show’s last two seasons, Kristin has not left behind the drama. From her “relationships” with Justin Bobby and Brody Jenner, to her catfights with high school nemeses, Kristin keeps the mayhem brewing wherever she goes. 5. Kendra, Bad Girls Club Kendra was the epitome of a two-faced friend on Oxygen’s Bad Girls Club. After getting into a fight with Natalie, she opted to keep her in the house because she wanted to benefit from Natalie’s celebrity connections. Kendra used the house as a way to get closer to people and to use them for what she wanted. Don’t we all know someone like that? 4. New York, Flavor of Love New York, also known as Tiffany Pollard, is the most immediately recognizable name of reality dating show villains. From trying to sabotage cast mates to professing her love for rapper Flavor Flav, which spanned two seasons, New York, along with her mother, gave viewers a good show. She proved in her own reality spinoff I Love

Omarosa

Kim Zolciak Tiffany “New York” Pollard

New York, to be a handful f and left the show lonely and heartbroken. 3. Natalie Nunn, Bad Girls Club Whether you loved her or hated her, Natalie Nunn made a name for herself on this year’s installment of the aforementioned BGC. Nunn had access to all of the hottest clubs based on who she was and whom she knew in Hollywood. She was a self-professed gold digger and even though she had a boyfriend, she still hooked up with guys on camera. Her infamous fight with housemate Olivia proved that not everyone was going to put up with Nunn’s antics. 2. Danielle Staub, The Real Housewives of New Jersey New Jersey housewife Danielle Staub has a past so full of chaos, she could make members of the mob blush. Danielle continues to be the thorn in the sides of her fellow housewives. Danielle plays the victim role so well that she hires bodyguards and ex-convicts to escort her to public events where the other housewives will be. Danielle knows

Spencer Pratt

she’s good at this role. Let’s just hope it keeps her out of jail. 1. Spencer Pratt, The Hills Former Hills douchebag Spencer Pratt is one the most fame-hungry reality stars to date. He has pitted friends against each other and alienated his wife, Heidi, from her family. Pratt even refuses to have a relationship with his sister, Stephanie Pratt, whom he says “doesn’t exist.” Pratt admits to being a “fame whore” and will make sure that he is all everyone is talking about. extra credit

Lauren Conrad is Back to Reality >> After a little more than a year after leaving The Hills, MTV announced Lauren Conrad would return to the network to star in a docu-series about launching her latest fashion line. Though she’s expressed her disinterest in stepping back in front of the camera, Conrad says, “I am so excited to be rejoining the MTV family. The new project will follow me as I develop my new contemporary line and also touch on my other businesses.”

Cropped Up

play with proportions with resort’s batch of crop tops, sure to make your wardrobe a cut above the rest Wise Buy

Olive Crop Tee by Metropark, metroparkusa.com; $26 (or 2 for $39) We were smitten the moment we looked at Derek Lam’s resort collection, filled with barely there skirts, tangerine frocks and subdued neutrals for the anti-look-at-me set. But what grabbed our attention in JAYE Land was the crop top featured in look number ten. The subtle sex appeal unleashed through the exposure of a little midsection flesh left enough to the imagination and steered clear of skank territory. We found this under-$30 version (or less-than-$40 if you buy multiples) at Metropark and encourage you to wear it as a layer to add a new dimension to a fitted dress or with a floor-length maxi skirt and boots to change up the silhouette. Opt for structured separates since the top is generously cut to avoid a unfortunate combination.

Punchy Prints, Reinvented Classics, and Breezy Fabrics are the recipe for Thakoon’s cool resort look

T

hakoon Panichgul has never stayed in one place. Born in Thailand and raised in Omaha, Thakoon draws inspiration from two very different sources: his detail-oriented Asian roots and his simple and classic American sensibilities. The designer dabbled in everything from getting a business degree from Boston University to being an fashion writer before he found his calling after enrolling as a tailoring student at Parsons. Thakoon is best know for taking classic fabrics and silhouettes and tweaking them so perfectly that they retain their timeless style, but are still feel fresh and young. He also has a penchant for working with prints, creating wonderfully whimsy garments for women everywhere.   For Resort, Thakoon found inspiration in the photographs of Malick Sidibe. The photographer’s 1960s portraits of West African youths, with all of their vivacity and bold patterns, are seamlessly woven throughout the collection with easy tribal prints.   Inspired by the graphic photos of Malike Sidibe, Thakoon Panichgul created a Resort collection that married the easy chic clothing of Paris with bold colors and tribal prints of Africa. Thakoon, always a master of prints, paried graphic designs “reminiscent of a backgammon board” with feminine shapes and reinvented classic pieces such as a cape like trench coat.” For Resort, Thakoon offers elegant, yet youthful and unique pieces. Especially the diamond printed asymmetrical sheath and unique hourglass shaped, linear printed dress with a cool, accentuated folding detail on the skirt. With reinvented trenches, unique dresses, and bold separates that can work for anything from class, to a night out, or even a job interview, Thakoon’s offering is a wearable work of art. – A. M.

the life of a fashion editor

Fashion Diary With Thanksgiving on the horizon, JAYE’s superstylish Fashion Director, Julianna Hamett, is thankful for designers who create jaw-dropping accessories that forge function with fantasy ■ As we approach this holiday season, it’s customary to reflect on what we’re most thankful for. As I clicked through my favorite fashion and style blogs, I began to realize what us fashion slaves are most thankful for. I like to call it: The Lust Factor — those amazingly out-ofreach, over-the-top avant-garde accessories that are not yet within my budget, but make my heart skip a beat. As you view my favorites and flip through JAYE, I hope you gasp and admire them the way that I do. Also remember, this season we should be thankful for the little things and definitely for fashion, even if it doesn’t mean purchasing!

Anytime I view a work an art as stunning as this from the late Alexander McQueen, I realize how much he’ll continue to be sorely missed by fashion lovers across the world.

Nicholas Kirkwood teamed up with Kate and Laura Mulleavy of the Rodarte label to create this shoe for their fall show and the results are nothing short of showstopping.

The Hermes Birkin signals you’ve hit sartorial jackpot in fashion land. With so many styles, it’s hard to pick my fave — but you can’t go wrong with black croc.

I can’t help but think of all the heads that will turn as I saunter up and down the streets of New York. Hey, can’t a lady dream?

Ah, the red sole! Aren’t these to die for? They can dress up jeans and a T-shirt or add some va-va-voom to shift dress for a night out. And they’re so on trend!

This chrome and crystal bib necklace by Oscar de la Renta is the perfect finishing touch to my holiday cocktail dresses. I’m on the hunt for a less-expensive version.

This multi diamante and chunky chain necklace from Givenchy is definitely on the look-but-can’t-buy part of my wish list. It’s supremely versatile and so stunning. I always draw so much fashion inspiration from blogs. Whether I’m combing through them for story ideas for the magazine or just awing awesome streetstyle photos, I enjoy looking at the amazing candids on The Sartorialist as much as I do the amazing accessories I’ve chosen this month. Check out Scott Schuman’s awesome work at www.thesartorialist.blogspot. com and e-mail me at jhamett@gmail.com with links to your favorite photos!

■ We can’t say that we were really surprised after viewing the fall collections to see red reign as the beauty shade to wear this season. For starters, designers like fashion darling Prabal Gurung, the can-do-no-wrong Dolce & Gabanna duo and Donna Karan, the queen of downtown elegance, were determined to sophisticate the way women dress — more of the Mad Men-inspired classic shapes lauded for their elegance and versatility, less of the itty-bitty minis and too-severe strong shoulders that dominated fashion’s latest ‘80s revival.   There’s nothing more more timeless than a red lip. And there are few ocassions where a bold lip is prohibited. Another bonus: Even the simplest outfits are taken to another level with a dose of scarlet fever. Blasé jeans and T-shirt combos enter an obscure cool zone with a boost from the crimson cosmetic and the little black dress you find yourself recycling each holiday season is injected with new life immediately after a hit of cherryhued goodness finds it way to your pout.   Luckily, there are tons of opportunities to try the look out this winter — Thanksgiving dinners, cocktail soirées, reunions with friends back home — and we’ve made it easy to achieve with our how-to at right. ■

Make the red lip work for you Are you warm or cold? Complexions that are pale with pink undertones are cool; those with olive, yellow or darker ones are warm. If you’re cool, opt for cooler reds like a true red or pinkish red; warmer reds with a brown base are ideal for warm undertones. Prep your pout. To prevent bleeding or fading, line your lips with a neutral color similar to their actual color and smudge the line with your finger, says the editors at the beauty blog, Glamme Vine. Now, it’s time to apply. With a lip brush, use small strokes and fill in your lips with your color of choice. Blot gently and reapply. Own the look. It’s inevitable that you’re going to draw attention with your bold lip — embrace it!

Not quite ready to let go of that illuminating, golden hue now that the fall is underway? No worries, we’ve got your back. We chatted with celebrity makeup artist, AJ Crimson, who has worked with Estelle, Hilary Duff, the Black Eyes Peas and Letoya Luckett. Here, his tips to achieve a flawless, sunkissed look, anytime: On clean, moisturized skin use a light concealer in your normal shade in areas you need it and underneath the eye. Make Up For Ever makes a great new HD concealer in a great range. Apply a water-based or cream foundation (depending on the coverage you desire) that is two shades deeper than your own. Using your fingers to apply will offer a lighter more sheer application. Concentrate on the outer perimeter of the

A look at what it’s like to be a virgin on today’s college campuses By Arteika Smith

Some experts think movies like Juno contribute to the sterotype that all young people are irresponsible sex fiends.

W

ith television shows like ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager, society, mainly the Baby Boomer set, thinks all college students do is sleep in one another’s beds and have frequent pregnancy scares.   Thanks in part to movies like Juno and Knocked Up, the minority of young people that are engaging in

sexual activities are now heightened by placing them in the spotlight.   Contrary to mainstream media’s portrayal, in 2009, less than 50% of high school students reported ever having sexual intercourse.   By being stereotyped as “party girls” and “play boys”, it looks like love has taken the back seat in relationships and sex is now in the forefront. It’s displayed on commercials, embedded in magazine ads and all over the

Internet. Media makes it appear that everyone is hopping into bed—but what happens when you aren’t having sex?   Young ladies like Ashley Henderson, 23, who lives in Memphis, say she has never had sex and has resolved not to do so until marriage. She said she believes that marriage is sacred and she doesn’t want to give into the pressure of having sex just so that will consummate her relationship. >>

Henderson said that she chose not to have sex because she values her virginity and doesn’t want to give away a part of herself to just any man.   Henderson, born in a small town and bred in Memphis, has been a devout Jehovah’s Witness since birth says religion has always been a strong component of her upbringing.   “I made this decision not only for religious reasons, but also because my mother always instilled in me how precious sex is. The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve learned to truly value my virginity,” Henderson said.    Religion plays a large part in why a lot of young women do decide to wait until marriage.   Robert Watkins said he believes that as long as two adults are consenting they should be able to have sex whenever they want and don’t necessarily need to wait until marriage.   “The divorce rate for marriages is 50 percent so yes, I think it is an oxymoron to say save yourself for marriage,” Watkins says. “It could take a few bad apples, a few bad relation-

Pursuit of Fabulous: Arteika Smith Celebrates and Reflects on Her Journey

ships before you get to the right one.”   “But on a day-to-day basis we are immersed in a sexual culture. We should promote safe sex but we should provide tools and resources in case you choose an alternative route and decided to have premarital sex,” he continues.   With artists such as Beyoncé and Rihanna selling sex out in the open with records such as “Ego” and “Rude Boy” it’s harder than ever to shy away from sexual content in mainstream America. With sexually suggestive lyrics in both songs that tell us about their relationships with significant men in their lives both pop stars take us into their bedrooms on each

song.   There are also men like Shawn Smith that don’t have any qualms with dating a woman that is abstaining from sex until marriage. Case in point: His ex-girlfriend of nearly two years was a virgin and he says that her being a virgin had nothing to do with their relationship.   “Well I knew [she was a virgin] before we actually started dating. It wasn’t a big deal to me,” Smith says.   Their relationship ended just months ago but he never pressured her to have sex with him. He always made sure to make sure that they worked on the non-sexual aspects of their relationship like communication. >>

There have been many nights I have sat in bed thinking of how to turn my bad situation around. You see, when I was younger, I dreamed of being Khadijah James, from Living Single with my own Flavor magazine, and fabulous shoes like Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw — a writer, and a lover of life in the Big Apple. New York City for me represented dreams realized, unlike my hometown, which represented dreams deferred.   In retrospect, I would have gone to school in the media capital of America and been sure to graduate with a secure position in a major media outlet. If I had not been trying to please my parents and family by staying local, I would have gone to New York right after high school graduation.   Don’t get me wrong, I love and would not trade my time at the University of Tennessee for anything, but, if I had to do it again, I would have carefully planned and made different decisions.   So, I decided to go to college and study journalism. I even had a focus in political news so that I could be knowledgeable in more than just the fluff found in the gossip rags

I had life completely figured out, or so I thought.   Fast forward to the Great Recession of 2008, when I graduated from UT. I walked across the stage with debt up to my ears, no job in sight and, to top things off, I also didn’t have a place to live anymore. So, I packed up my bags with my diploma in tow and did what so many recent

grads have done: I moved back home with my parents.   With no job and no prospects, I decided to help a friend start his music career. During that time I also picked up a part-time job to pay off bills that had begun to pile up since graduation.   Truth is, I was anything but happy. I didn’t like going to work; I didn’t write, which has never been an issue, and honestly, I couldn’t find a reason to smile. But while I was working with my friend’s music career as his manager, publicist and personal assistant, I renewed my passion for media. I began a company, Smith Media Consulting, and began to work as a media consultant with local artists. My work with the local artists led me to rediscover my need to create.   What took me years to discover is that all of

craved by all sides when it comes to being in a relationship especially those that will ultimately lead to marriage.    Both Ashley and Jennifer crave intimacy but they are both taking different approaches to finding it in a relationship with a man.   Sex is desired more amongst our culture because it has been given more of a desirable face than intimacy. Being intimate with a person means trusting them and it becomes hard to trust a person when they won’t stick around long enough for you to share with them what many consider the most prized possession, yourself.   Ashley concludes, “Most people tend to forget that just because you have decided to abstain from having sex doesn’t mean that you have no desire to do it.” ■ Editor’s Note: Some names have been changed.

the tools of my happiness were in me the entire time. I just had to channel my energy and make it positive. I had the talent and the business sense, but I just needed to be more outgoing and reach for success. My thought process led me to believe that I had to be in a certain place to achieve my version of fabulous, but all I needed for my pursuit was to acknowledge that it was in me all along.   Writing has been therapy for my sanity since I made a decision to stop worrying about all the things in life that I could not change.   I believe that when faced with adversity, we have to remain true to ourselves and not get caught up in all the things that we cannot do. A few months ago, I made a decision to tackle fabulous one day at a time, I have rediscovered a sense of joy and appreciation for all the things and people in my life. Using my knowledge of the media world, I have been able to turn myself into a brand and I am working each day to be better than the last.   Fabulous is whatever you want it to be. We just have to make sure the pursuit is worth it. ■

BPA is a toxic chemical found in plastics that consumers should be aware of.

where have all the plastics gone? Chloe Metzger reports on the reason everyone is going crazy for BPA-free water bottles From store shelves to consumer hands across cities, the once hip, reusable, plastic bottles and containers are being phased out. In their place stand glassware and stainless steel water bottles, all sporting “BPA-free” promises, calling into question the severity of this rising trend. In the past year, the BPA chemical has been the center of worldwide research and debate, and new health risks have experts urging the public for greater awareness and caution.   Bisphenol A, or BPA, is a man-made estrogenic chemical used in various plastics and the lining of metal prod-

ucts like cans and bottle tops. While everyone regularly intakes estrogen through the air and water, scientists at the National Toxicology Program say too much exposure to a synthetic hormone like BPA may lead to type 2 diabetes, infertility, and a range of cancers including breast and prostate. The chemical is especially toxic to fetuses and infants because they are still developing vital parts of their bodies and BPA can tamper with their formation, leading to infant death or severe birth defects. Despite the grave risks linked to the hormone, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) >>

recently detected BPA in an estimated 95% of U.S. adults.   The majority of this daily exposure comes from ordinary food and drinks. While people are beginning to think twice about purchasing plastic sports water bottles, thousands of other chemical-ridden products still pose threats.    Unfortunately, identifying these items is not as simple as looking for Bisphenol A under an ingredients list on the back of a can. BPA is found in polycarbonate plastic, which also includes baby bottles, microwaveable food containers, toys, and dental sealants. The chemical begins to leak out of these plastics as soon as they are exposed to higher temperatures.   While plastic has received national recognition for containing the chemical hormone, many consumers are still unaware of its presence in metal products. For over 120 years, BPA has been used in the

resin lining of both water pipes and food and drink cans. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that one in 10 servings of canned food tested contained BPA levels 200 times the government’s safe limit for industrial chemicals. The study also showed that exposure during pregnancy to just one of these servings has been known to cause severe developmental damage to a fetus’ reproductive organs.   A general misconception is that products must be heated to a relatively high degree for toxic chemicals to take effect.   “This is not necessarily the case,” says David Carpenter, director of the Institute for Health and Environment at University of Albany; “The longer liquids or food sit in a BPA-made container, the more BPA will leak into its contents.”   With the risk of contamination so high, it is no wonder why research has been gaining momentum

in the past few years.     There is growing evidence that exposure to synthetic hormones like Bisphenol A contributes to health problems, such as obesity.   “The chemicals affect metabolism by acting directly on fat cells that promote obesity,” says Carpenter.   A recent study by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) exposed pregnant mice to BPA levels comparable to those that humans regularly encounter. The mice produced offspring that were shown to have distorted genes and metabolism at birth and became abnormally heavy

as adults.   With obesity on a rampage, BPA is just another factor contributing to American weight gain— especially when many of them already have the diet of a college student. With the canned soups, microwaveable dinners, and packs of soda consumed in abundance, college students are especially at risk for chemical exposure.   Though the BPA-free water bottle craze burgeoned on campuses, not all students are catching on. Research from Harvard University found that college students who drank all beverages out of polycarbonate containers had 70 percent more BPA >>

in their bodies than when they used stainless steel bottles alone.   The levels at which babies and students ingest BPA may be beginning to equalize, but college kids can protect themselves. While small amounts of BPA do not stay in the human system for very long, people are exposed to it so frequently that it never leaves the body. The chemical hides itself in non-recyclable, polycarbonate plastics that fall into the number 7 category of the plastic identification markings.     To avoid BPA exposure, people should be especially cautious of heating these plastics in the microwave and always hand wash them rather than stick them in a steamy dishwasher. Avoid more contamination by ditching the plastic bottles and containers altogether and switching to stainless steel products or glassware like Pyrex. There is no need to swear off all plastics forever, but limiting the use of them and avoiding no. 7 plastics will greatly reduce personal exposure.   Unfortunately, Bisphenol A will not be disappearing from dinner menus anytime soon unless action is taken. The National Toxicology Program shows that exposure to BPA may be increasing, yet no federal agency has moved to limit its exposure to humans.     Even though many companies like Nalgene and

“While small amounts of BPA do not stay in the human system for very long, people are exposed to it so frequently that it never leaves the body.” Camelbak are coming out with new packaging free of BPA, consumers still do not know what chemicals are being used as replacements.    Who can say that these new plastics do not contain a toxin that will cause further frenzy in 10 years? The FDA has avoided declaring BPA as dangerous, though the affirmation would cause the government to immediately tighten safety standards.   For now, Wal-Mart and other retailers have begun to pull BPA-containing products from shelves, and five states have banned the

making of baby bottles with Bisphenol A chemicals, says the EWG. Legislature is currently reviewing bills from five states to ban the use of BPA in products made for children under the age of 3. It is small steps like these that experts hope will lead to greater improvements in safety standards. Until protection against children and adults is strengthened, people must create their own safety standards, and that starts with letting people know what is really in their food and beverage containers.

So what is Carpenter’s hope for change? Generation Y.   “They have the best chance of making a change and getting action against the use and production of these chemicals,” he says. “College students are the voice of awareness. I hope they use it.” ■ Opt for alternatives to plastic, like Pyrex glasswear.

married with homework

Young couples across America are choosing to put on a wedding band before their graduation cap By Britney Darnell

T

here is nothing like finding your college sweetheart. It’s no longer puppy, high school love; you are now in a meaningful and more mature relationship. Your heart is full of joy and you feel like you could jump on clouds. So, on love alone, and in hopes that you will experience this feeling for a lifetime, you get married right away.   Now you’re married with a baby on the way, but you still have to study for the two exams next week in English and Chemistry. That floating-on-air feeling you once had may still be there, but the stress and pressure of finishing college as well as supporting your family can overshadow it.   Amber Williams knows this experience all too well. At the age of 19, Williams was married with child. She experienced the cloud-nine love, the stress, the financial strain and the pressure of studying for major tests.   “There were times when it was not easy, but I had the support of my husband,” Williams said. “He would make sure the kids at home had food on the table while I was in the library studying for classes.”   Williams, now a 25-year-old mother of three, graduated on time, but does not deny the many roadblocks she faced to keep her marriage on the right track. Williams said the stress at the beginning helped foster a more

mature relationship for both herself and her husband, who have been married for six years. She also underlines the importance of communication before the big question is popped answered with a “yes.” Williams said being determined and having set goals at the beginning will keep your relationship heading in a positive direction.   “Just don’t marry on love alone,” Williams said. “It takes more than that to make it work.”   Erica Sibley decided to take a different approach with her college sweetheart. While in college, Sibley was very devoted to engulfing herself into her collegeiate experience. It helped that she and her boyfriend at the time, who is now her fiancé, had similar college lives. They were both heavily involved in Greek organizations and other professional associations on campus.   “We were very involved in each other’s lives,” Sibley said. “We kept each other entertained by talking about what we had going at different times.”   Although the two dated through college, marriage was never directly addressed. Sibley, who now lives with her fiancé in Arizona, said that the two tended to beat around the bush or would mention it in passing when they talked about having a family and what kind of parents they would be. >>

love and happiness

“We never had any thoughts of getting married while in college,” Sibley said. “We did not start mentioning families until close to the end of our junior year.”   But Sibley did not mind; actually, she preferred it this way. Sibley said one issue she notices with young wives is when they marry while still in school, they may miss out on the social aspect of the college experience.   “I see cases where young women get married between the ages of 19 to 21, and they miss out on the opportunity to be with friends and go to parties,” Sibley said. “Now that everybody is done with their college party lives and ready to settle down, the married woman is just now beginning her party life at the age of 26 or 27.” ■

what college taught me

Audra Sportello

age: 22 born: New Jersey college: University of New Hampshire graduated: May 2010 major: Tourism, Planning and Development minor: Hospitality What is your best college memory? I have too many to count. I really loved my time in college and even though it’s only been a few months, I really miss it. What do you consider the greatest accomplishment of your college career? I think mine would be getting straight As my last semester. One of my classes was pretty easy, but I had to work hard for the other three. Now that you’re out of college, what do you miss most about it? I miss the friends I made there and the college atmosphere. I recently moved out of my parents’ house and into an apartment with some friends from college, but its different living on your own than when you live on campus surrounded by friends all the time. What was your biggest fear upon first entering college? I think my biggest fear was if I’d be able to handle the workload and make new friends. Was there anything in college that you didn’t do that you regret? My freshman year I was really shy and didn’t meet as many people as I wish I had. I definitely became more outgoing over the next few years, but I wish I could redo that year over. I also wish I hadn’t skipped so many classes. It’s not a good idea! What was the best spring break trip you ever took? I went to Florida with my best friend at the time. It was our first trip without parents and we had a lot of fun!

78 november 2010  jaye.com

What was one of the craziest things you ever did during college? Probably my 21st birthday…that’s all I have to say! How did you de-stress during hectic exam time? I would take time out from studying by hanging out with my friends and walking around campus. It’s really important not to take too much time out from studying though; otherwise it’s hard to get back to the books. What was your favorite exam time food to keep you energized during late study hours? Chocolate! Probably not the best idea, but I’m addicted! Your best procrastination activities? I can turn anything into procrastination which is not a good trait. But the best (and worst) would have to be Facebook. Did you ever have any major disputes between you and your roommates? If so, how did you handle it? Yes! It’s never fun fighting with someone that sleeps five feet away from you, and there were a lot of times I didn’t handle it the right way. You have to be willing to talk about what the problem is and make compromises. Just because you’re friends with someone doesn’t mean you can live together, but there are ways to work it out. What do you consider the best place on a college campus to meet eligible bachelors? I’ve heard people say the gym or the bars, but I think it depends on what

kind of relationship you’re looking for at the time. I think the best way to meet guys is by getting involved. What has been the biggest adjustment from college life to postgrad life? What’s one advantage of post-grad life that college doesn’t offer and vice-versa? For most people when you’re in college you’re on your own, but in reality you’re not. My parents paid for the majority of the things I did in college so that would have to be the biggest advantage of college life. The advantage of post-grad life is not having to worry about papers and tests. The biggest adjustment has been watching my bank account get smaller and smaller. What are you currently doing now that you are out of school and what are your future plans? I just moved into a house with some friends and I’m sending out resumes wherever I can. Right now, I’m working at a restaurant as a hostess, but my future plans are to work in the travel industry or become an event planner. Finding a job where I can use my degree has been somewhat difficult, but I only graduated a few months ago; so I’m hopeful. – Kamie Pamulapati E-mail us as jayemag@gmail.com.to Share your college ups and downs with our readers!

Technology has enabled us to connect to people across the country with one click of the mouse. And this month, we’re especially thankful: As the temps continue to plunge, our sights take us to the Golden State where Rachel Nguyen, the girl behind style blog, That’s Chic takes it easy — and looks good while doin’ it

ike most magazines, at JAYE, we try to confirm our cover girls months in advance. And when we made our short list of girls to run on our first cover, Rachel Nguyen was at the top of it.   If you take a look at That’s Chic, her online chronicles composed of crystalclear photos of her easy, breezy personal style ( think lots of vintage, flowy layers and a designer splurge here and there ), stashes of inspiration photos (that send you to a fantasy land where the only thing that matters is fashion), and dossiers on the latest musings in her world, you realize that she’s what JAYE’s all about.   Juggling the life of an always busy twentysomething and trying to do it in style isn’t always easy, but her pictures and laid-back writing style have an effortless sensibility about them that reinforces the idea that Rachel doesn’t take herself too seriously, and more importantly, her style is an extension of that notion. Rachel gave me a few moments of her time to discuss her wardrobe staples, the role of bloggers in today’s fashion industry, and if they have longevity or if blogging’s a fad that’s here today, gone tomorrow.  — Michael Jones JAYE: For starters, how old are you? Rachel Nguyen: 20 JAYE: Where do you go to school? What’s your major? RN: I just transferred to University of California, Irvine to study Business Economics JAYE: Why did you start blogging? of highschool, and I had a really strict dad. I guess it was some sort of outlet for me when I wasn’t allowed much of social one, and all the magazines and fashion forum browsing, I needed a place to document it all.

trash and Fashion Toast [a popular blog by Rumi Neely] knockoffs floating around the internet. I guess after blogging for so long, I find it a little overrated. For now though, it looks like it’s here to stay.

JAYE: Why do you think there is such an interest in bloggers by companies and brands to wear their products and promote their merchandise? RN: Bloggers are people you can relate to, and after following a person for so long, you gain trust of their opinion and simply fall in love. I mean, if you’re following someone for a year or more, you must be really fond of them. Companies see this personal relationship growing and jump on the opportunity of dressing that said blogger who will style it to the reader’s preference. It’s much more personal to see it styled personally on a blogger than it is in a magazine where it’s almost intangible.

JAYE: Any advice for people wanting to start their own blog? RN: People just need to be themselves. It is a little frustrating to see girls who are blogging just to gain the opportunities that the big guns have had and in doing so, they’re just straight knockoffs. People can see right through you!

JAYE: Why do you think there is so much animosity harbored towards bloggers? RN: I think it’s because the industry has been so hard to get in and bloggers kind of ease their way through the backdoor. It is a little unfair. JAYE: Do you think the blogging craze has staying power or it’s just a phase? RN: It’s all up in the air. There’s almost too many blogs to filter through – and I’ll be a little bold for saying, but there’s a lot of

JAYE: How much time do you devote to your blog each week? RN: Dude, it is a lot more work than people think! I try to shoot pictures twice in the week— 15 minutes each time. Sitting down to go through and edit the pictures is another pain… then battling writer’s block once the post actually goes up! I’m totally the type who will sit in front of the computer and toggle between browsing social media sites and Blogger thus easily taking up two hours to write a paragraph. It’s a lot of work; I guess I’m a little jaded. Nonetheless, it’s still a fun process and keeps me busy.

with a side profile in marketing is all I dream about. JAYE: Where do you get style inspiration from? RN: From all over but namely the clothing itself. When I see a gorgeous pair of shoes or jacket, I’m playing around with it for hours trying to think of different ways to wear it. The excitement of falling in love with an article of clothing is as silly as it is stimulating. JAYE: What are your favorite fall trends? RN: I try not to follow trends, but I’m really excited to wear my leather Vena Cava army-green parka [worn on the cover and on the opposite page] and tons of muddy-neutrals in knee-length hemlines.

JAYE: How would you describe your style? RN: California chic thrown into vintage racks of clothing. JAYE: What are your career aspirations? RN: Starting up a PR company

JAYE: Outside of blogging, what do you enjoy doing? RN: Eating! I love spending a day in another city in Orange County looking for places to eat! JAYE: What are some of your foolproof staples that you find yourself constantly wearing to pieces? RN: A camel-toned blazer, comfy ankle boots, a black skirt with a ton of volume, and a throw-on suede vest. JAYE: Who are your favorite designers? you listen to? RN: Everything from top 40 (although it never makes it on the iPod) to ‘70s Italian disco. JAYE: What are some of your suggestions on balancing school with other obligations? RN: School always comes first until you go crazy in the library, then you need to take a break and work on other things – in my case, blogging! JAYE: Do you have any pets? RN: Nope! I can barely take care of myself let alone a poor animal. JAYE: Were you into fashion growing up? RN: I was into getting dressed and playing with clothes — I never really started to culture myself until high school. JAYE: How do you get dressed? Do you pick out items at night? Is it by mood? RN: If I can actually pick out an outfit the night before, it would make my mornings a hell of a lot easier. Sadly, I can’t. My mood changes overnight easily and sometimes, a shirt just doesn’t feel right. So I pick out a pair of shoes first (because that’s what I’ll be walking in all day) then trial-and-error around that. JAYE: Do you have any favorite bloggers? RN: Too many to name… I think I just read the entire blogosphere. ■ Editor’s Note: Visit Rachel’s blog at ThatsChic.net.

Also, I’m occasionally accused of narcissism and arrogance.

daniel

19, Botany major at the University of Florida Describe yourself in five words: “Passionate, charming, romantic, sensitive and intelligent” Why he’s single: “To be honest, I’m just not ready for a committed relationship. I have a lot of discovering to do before I can fully commit myself to someone else.”

23, Sports Management major at Winston-Salem University Describe yourself in five words: “Friendly, outgoing, optimistic, complex and determined” Why he’s single: “Some women can’t handle me being friendly with so many females.”

22, Philosophy major at the University of Florida Describe yourself in five words: “The modern-day renaissance man” Why he’s single: I think it is largely due to the fact that I’m not proactive enough when it comes to approaching women. Many of the women I’m attracted to are close friends and see me as a brother figure.”

david

21, Political Science major at Baruch College Describe yourself in five words: “Straightforward, funny, honest, likeable and adventurous” Why he’s single: “It takes time to find someone who you really get along with.”

paul

24, Business Management major at the University of Delaware Describe yourself in five words: “A pun-filled, happy-go-lucky romantic nerd” Why he’s single: “I’m a serial monogamist who seems to keep finding the wrong kind of girl. It takes me several months to figure that out. As soon as I get over the break-up, I’m out searching again!”

The Question:

How does a woman make a good first impression? Paul: I’m attracted to three things: a laugh, a smile, and eyes. If I’m out and having fun with friends, I’m drawn to other people who are doing the same. What I like most is a person who isn’t afraid to smile. I have to admit really bad teeth is a turn-off! Eyes can tell you so much! You can read a person from their eyes, and I love people who show off their eyes naturally. Daniel: She has to be outgoing and have a sense of humor. She also has to have a great smile. It’s the first thing that I notice on a woman. Ben: Be open to conversation—don’t speak excessively of yourself, ask questions in return, and show genuine interest. Also, being hot helps. James: Simply being genuinely interested in me and outgoing. Tell a joke. Even if it’s the worst joke I’ve heard in my life, I will laugh at it if I’m feeling you. David: I like a woman who is approachable. So many women walk around mad at the world. If girls just loosened up, they’d be approached more often. Joevan: Being herself and knowing who she is. She shouldn’t be worried about impressing me. If she’s herself, I’m down. Marcus: Being able to hold a conversation about things other than pop culture. The use of big words impresses me.

▲ Talia Says: It’s all about positive energy ladies. Put a smile on that face and ready for whatever happens.

“I don’t mind competition, but I don’t want to have to take a ticket and wait in line!” – Paul Relationships & Dating By the Numbers: 51% of single people surveyed say that flattery is the best way to attract someone. According to Are You Normal About Sex, Love, and Relationships?, 25% also say to use touching as a way to flirt is very effective, and a surprising 23% say that the best way to let someone know you’re interested in them is the old schoolyard method of passing word through a friend. Source: ArticlesBase.com

► Talia Says: A man is more likely to approach you if he thinks he has a chance. If you’re giving off good vibes and not surrounding by tons of people, he just might think you’re willing and able to chat.

“So many women walk around mad at the world. If girls just loosened up, they’d be approached more often.” – David Don’t be afraid to show your cheerful side. Our guys say cracking jokes and smiling makes a great first impression.

The Question:

What would prevent you from approaching a woman? Paul: If she’s already surrounded by guys, even if it’s guy friends. One or two guys are fine, as long as there are girls too; but if she’s just with one, or with a group of only guys, I get wary. Either she’s dating one of them, interested in one of them, or a huge flirt. I don’t mind competition, but I don’t want to have to take a ticket and wait in line! Daniel: Snotty, pretentious attitudes. Ben: A woman in a large group. Both sexes ought to hunt in small packs. James: Arrogance beyond belief. I wouldn’t dare waste precious clean air approaching someone who gives off that vibe that their swag don’t stink. Roses by Outkast describe this to a T. David: Once again, coming off as unapproachable. Why am I going to approach you if you’re acting like you don’t want to be bothered? Joevan: If I don’t like the way she’s carrying herself, forget it. Marcus: Most of the time my nerves prevent me from approaching someone. Women are rude these days. Also, if I know your sexual history before I meet you, we really don’t have much to discuss.

from the mouths of babes

The Question: What Makes a Woman Sexy?

Paul: Non-physically, a woman who speaks her mind. I like outgoing personalities! Don’t agree with me just because you want to make a good impression or avoid conflict. Let’s talk, debate, argue (but stay respectful)! I want to know the real you. Physically, smooth skin, especially on her back. I don’t know why, but running my hands over smooth skin just gets my imagination going. Did I mention I give massages? Daniel: Eyes! That’s where all the passion is. Confidence is key. Don’t be so self-conscious! I

know this is weird, but when I see girls long boarding on campus, that’s a turn-on! Ben: I like assertiveness. I think it’s wholly hypocritical for a woman to expect a man who is confident and has direction, while she herself is content to dabble around aimlessly and be pursued. It’s very hot for a woman to be passionate about her career pursuits and opinionated. James: The way she carries herself. I like the the type of woman who comes off as being modest and shy, but on the inside knows that the whole room is looking at her. Personality is sexy too. The more I can relate to her or understand her viewpoints on random topics, the better I feel about how things are

going. I’m a butt guy, so that’s another turn-on but not a deal breaker. If she is into sports, she could win me over much more easily than a lady who has zero interest in anything athletic. Can’t forget about the girl-next-door look — sweats, leggings, a baseball cap, and a T-shirt of her favorite movie. It drives me absolutely crazy because it’s such a sexy look and requires her to be herself. David: Can I say everything? Women are the best things that happened to this world. Joevan: Intelligence. There is nothing sexier than a woman who is a smart, goal-oriented woman who has her own. Marcus: Personally, I think intelligent women are sexy. I also think a woman with a talent, or multiple talents,

is sexy. A real talent, not being able to burp the alphabet or something likes that. I think the sexiest woman exudes sex appeal with minimal effort. No make-up. No tight, revealing clothing.

Less is more, says our insiders, as Zoe Saldana shows.

▲ Talia Says: You see! It doesn’t take tons of make-up, revealing clothing and provocative behavior to be sexy. Trying too hard to be sexy screams insecurity and low self-esteem. Start focusing on what’s not visible to the eye. Who wants a pretty, yet hollow, doll?

he said, she said: “You can’t stop loving or wanting to love because when its right, it’s the best thing in the world. When you’re in a relationship and it’s good, even if nothing else in your life is right, you feel like your whole world is complete.” – Keith Sweat Soul-mates are people who bring out the best in you. They are not perfect but are always perfect for you. – Unknown “The fundamental glue that holds any relationship together is trust.” – Brian Tracy

98 november 2010  jaye.com

the question:

What’s the one thing women obsess about that men really don’t care about? Paul: Their hair. The types of hair styles and colors women will put on their heads baffle me. Throw your hair back in a ponytail for all I care. Unless we’re going on a fancy date, your hair looks fine as is! Daniel: Appearance. If I like the girl, I don’t care if she’s without make-up or dressed down. Appearances aren’t everything. Ben: In general, women get too easily attached to Plan A and are unwilling to go with the flow and adjust to Plan B if necessary. James: How her hair looks every time she goes outside. Unless it was personally attacked by a storm, I can deal with it not being straightened or “perfect.” David: Women obsess over their appearance way too much. Yes, we want you to look good, but we don’t want you to be vain. If we approach you and devote our energy to you, we clearly find you attractive. Be secure. Joevan: Themselves. Real woman know who they are and accept who they are and could care less about the image that “boys” uphold. Marcus: Stretch marks. I really couldn’t care less.

▲ Talia Says: Men aren’t as shallow as you think. They are indeed visual creatures, but they yearn for someone who’s authentic.

The Question:

There’s nothing our guys hate more than an insecure girlfriend. Don’t snoop — trust that your man has nothing to hide.

What’s one habit you cannot tolerate from a woman? Paul: Saying “Um” every other word. If you need to collect your thoughts, stop, think, and then speak. I’d be glad for you to take a second or two if it stops you from sounding like an elementary school kid. Daniel: Chewing with your mouth open. It drives me insane! Ben: She doesn’t tell you her dietary restrictions. James: The need to read my text messages. “I”-phone, not “us”-phone for a reason. If she is trying to read my text messages, I can only imagine she tries to go on my laptop and look through my Facebook. David: I can’t stand a woman who is clingy. I think clingy women are insecure. I want my woman to be confident and have a life of her own. Yes, we may be an item, but we are still two individuals. Joevan: Nagging about the same old things. Marcus: Being selfish. If I make you my number one priority and you make yourself your number one priority, then I end up being no one’s priority, That’s unacceptable.

▲ Talia Says: A man can learn to love your quirks, not behavior that’s detrimental to the relationship. Taking up his space is nowhere as vexing as smacking your bubble gum.

the question:

What’s your definition of single? Dating? A relationship? Paul: Single is when you’re not with a person in a committed relationship. Dating is going out and doing things with a person you’re romantically interested in. A relationship is actually saying you’re boyfriend and girlfriend and being monogamous. Daniel: Single is someone who just likes to be alone, but still wants to flirt or have that feeling of companionship without committing. Dating, to me, is more like just like a way to say “Yeah we’re together”,

but it’s not love. A relationship is more of an “in love” type of deal. Ben: Being single is not seeing anybody regularly. Dating is seeing someone regularly— you make plans and formally get together. When you’re in a relationship together, you see someone regularly and there’s no need to set up times because it’s assumed you’ll usually be together. James: When I’m single, I can do whatever I want, because I am not in any type of commitment that requires me to answer to anyone. When dating, I can still do whatever I want. I can go on as many dates with as many women as I feel necessary. Unless I notice a special spark on one of these dates, there is no need

“I think clingy women are insecure. I want my woman to be confident and have a life of her own.” – David to close all the opportunistic doorways just yet. I am upfront with the women I date, this way no one gets hurt. As long as it’s understood by her that I am “testing the waters” so to speak, I won’t come off as being a player. When I’m in a relationship, I’m committed to my girlfriend. We’re exclusive. Out of respect to her, I no longer go on dates with anyone else because I am with her and must remain faithful. David: A single man can do whatever he wants. When I’m dating, I still get to explore my options. When I zero-in on the girl I want to be with, I’ll commit and be in a relationship. Joevan: Single: There is no one special in your life and no

one to answer to. You are living your life. Dating: The getting-to-know-one-another stage. Relationship: Committing to someone after getting to know them. Marcus: Single is not being involved with any one person beyond maybe the occasional casual encounter. Dating is seeing someone frequently, but not necessarily having any real commitment. Being in a relationship means that there is an agreement by both partners to make a commitment to maintain some sort of exclusivity.

▲ Talia Says: When single or dating, men feel free to see other people. Don’t be turned off by the fact that he’s dating other people. It’s his right.

Communication is a vital component to a healthy, happy relationship.

the question:

the question:

how important is sex in a relationship? Paul: Very. It doesn’t have to be right away, but if you’re a sexually active person, you’ll miss sex after a while. Sex is not all of a relationship, but I consider it a key part. Daniel: It doesn’t hurt, but it definitely shouldn’t be the focal point in a relationship. Ben: Are you serious? James: It’s only as important as you make it. Out of 100, sex is about 15 percent of the relationship. It shouldn’t dictate the relationship though. If I am getting it, great. If I’m not, it’s not the end of the world. I’m not in a relationship for the sex. David: Sex can definitely enhance a relationship, but it’s not enough. Joevan: It varies. Women and men should hold out on one another to see if there’s more to the relationship than sex. Marcus: Between sexually active people, it’s pretty important. It shouldn’t be the main priority. You can have a good relationship without sex.

▲ Talia Says: If all a man wants is sex, he can get it without being in a relationship. If he’s in a relationship with you, he wants to get to know you on the inside. No pun intended. Seriously.

What are the three things that a successful relationship needs?

“Women and men should hold out on one another to see if there’s more to the relationship than sex.” – Joevan The Question: What’s the worst thing a woman can do in a relationship?

Paul: Cheat. If you want to hook up with another guy, get out of the relationship first. I will never take back a girl who has cheated on anyone. Daniel: Lying. Once you break that trust, it’s hard to reestablish. Ben: Silent treatment and frequent threats of breaking up. Neglect can ruin a relationship too. James: Lie. David: Dishonesty of course. I also can’t stay with a woman who no longer believes in me and our relationship. Joevan: Cheat and hide information. Marcus: Unfaithfulness. Lying about it just makes it worse.

Warning, ladies: Don’t threaten your guy with break-ups during arguments. Talk it out and try to find a resolution.

Paul: Laughter, trust and respect. Daniel: Trust, time apart and fun. Ben: Friendship, passion and empathy. James: Honesty, trust and communication. David: Respect, excitement and honesty. Joevan: Communication, trust and love. Marcus: Trust, honesty and communication. first date Qs: Now that you’ve got the 411 on what makes guys tick, arm yourself with a few not-so-boring queries to ask on a first date: ■ What is your nickname from high school? ■ Name one singer you can’t stand the sound of? ■ If you could get free airfare, name a country you’d visit. ■ What is your most treasured possession? “I also can’t stay with a woman who no longer believes in me and our relationship.”  – Daniel

from the mouths of babes

the question:

“Actions speak louder than words, and me telling her, ‘Babe, I’m serious about you and this relationship,’ just isn’t enough.” – James

It’s one thing for your man to tell you how he feels, but our guys say, if he’s really into you, he’ll show you too.

the question:

What’s the biggest misconception women have about men and relationship? Paul: Men want sex all the time. Granted, we want sex most of the time, but I’ve dated girls with sex drives larger than mine! Daniel: We are only interested in physical aspects of a relationship. Ben: Men are just as sensitive as women are. We express emotions differently — primarily through our actions. James: We are all the same and inevitably break your heart, like the last two losers you dated. This sucks because some of us won’t ever get a chance. Letting the last guy dictate what she thinks about the next guy is irrational and childish. No two guys are a like. The faster women realize that, the better off planet Earth will be. David: We don’t have emotions. I don’t even think that’s humanly possible. We may not overtly show them, but they are there. Joevan: We all are dogs and act the same. Marcus: Men have to be figured out. Men are very simple. If you are dating a man, he’ll be upfront. Don’t over analyze the situation or make excuses if he’s not the way you want.

How do you indicate to a woman that you’re serious about her and the relationship? Paul: I actually ask her to be my girlfriend. Up until that point, we’re not officially in a relationship. If we’ve been dating for a long while and it’s true, I’ll tell her I love her. I only say it if I mean it. Daniel: Tell her how serious you are and have your actions live up to her. Actions definitely speak louder than words. Ben: I don’t think there’s a definitive moment or action where things become serious. If things are going well, there’s a natural progression of spending more time together and doing more for each other. James: I give her my undivided attention and time. I go the extra mile. Actions speak louder than words, and me telling her, “Babe, I’m serious about you and this relationship,” just isn’t enough. David: When a woman meets my family, I’m telling her that I want to take this relationship to the next level. Family is important to me and I care what they think. Joevan: I’ll show her, let her know that I care and make her trust me. I’ll do things she likes out of the blue and learn about her. Marcus: I usually just tell her how I feel. In addition, I may make a huge gesture to demonstrate the way I feel. I’ll do something I wouldn’t do for anyone else under any circumstance.

▲ Talia Says: Men are definitely the more straightforward sex. If he’s not telling you what’s on his mind, he is showing you. It’s also a big step for man to take a relationship seriously, so he won’t profess his seriousness for the heck of it. Victoria Beckham says that she and her hubby David are still discovering things about each other, even after 11 years of marriage.

◄ Talia Says: Other than the obvious reason, the only difference between men and women is that men have their own way of expressing themselves. Don’t expect him to stop traffic. Also, until you meet all the men in this world, you can jump to conclusions. Even a million bad apples can’t spoil the bunch.

from the mouths of babes ▼ Talia Says: Take your time. What’s the rush?

the question:

What single piece of advice would you give women about men and relationships?

Guys aren’t always thinking about nooky. They want to spend quality time with you and nurture the relationship.

“Don’t let your tendency to over-think talk you out of something good or trap you into something bad.” – Marcus ▼ Talia Says: Other than the obvious reason, there really isn’t a difference between men and women. Methods may be different, but we all want the same things.

the question:

Paul: Be yourself. Compromise is fine, but never feels like you have to change to make the relationship work. We want you, not the person you think we want you to be. Daniel: Don’t give all of yourself to a man at once. We like to be able to discover new things about you throughout the relationship. It keeps things interesting. Ben: Resolving disputes with angry sex is awesome. I mean that in the most sincere way possible. James: Every man has a multitude of characteristics, which makes him unique and different from the next guy. Genuinely care enough to find out what makes him who he is, and you will never have to worry about having to pry into his brain when something is troubling him. He will naturally want to share the world with you if you dare to venture into his. David: Be patient with your man. Just because he’s not doing and saying things at the rate you want him to doesn’t mean he doesn’t care. Joevan: Give a man a chance before you write him off as “just another guy”. Men like a woman who can go out on the limb and give them their all. Being patient is the key. Do not rush a guy into something he isn’t ready for. Marcus: Don’t let your tendency to over-think talk you out of something good or trap you into something bad. The easiest way to turn your guy off? Think he’s like your exes before giving him a chance to prove otherwise.

What “secret” about men would you like to tell women? Paul: If a man won’t commit to a relationship, he thinks he can do better. Unless you can get a man to commit, you are his girlfriend and you should stay away. If you’re looking for a friend with benefits, we’ll entertain you. Daniel: Some of us actually have feelings. We aren’t just mindless sex machines. We actually care about what you think. Ben: We assume you’ll become your mothers. Expect us to become our fathers. James: We talk about you to our friends in the same way you talk about us to your friends. David: We are equally hurt when a woman betrays our trust. Joevan: We all want love just as bad as women do. We just hide it better. Marcus: Most men would rather have one good woman than 20 not-so-good women.

“We talk about you to our friends in the same way you talk about us to your friends.” – James Additional Reporting by Brianti Downing

the rant

till we meet again death to the imbecilic trending topic

At its best, Twitter is bind that connects people across the world and allows them to exchange information faster than a speeding bullet. At its worst, the social networking force is an incubus for ignorance, most notably in the form of the useless trending topic. Follow our threestep guide to get rid of the ridiculous TTs We like Twitter, we really do. Most of the editors have accounts, and not only does the network help us stay connected, but it’s also a great way to shoot the breeze in class, at work or while we should be studying for that biochem final in a few weeks. But here’s one thing we can’t stand: cockamamie trending topics (TTs).   The ones like, “#waystoaskforsex” (as if any of the recommendations would actually result in any nooky), “#nowthatsghetto” (we didn’t know people still said that!), and one of our faves, “#letsbehonest” (since we’re being so “honest,” flooding our timelines with these absurd musings may drive us crazy, but they make you look, well, crazy).   According to Twitter, TTs are designed to give you a snapshot of what’s going on in the world, and as wired in as our generation likes to be,

118 november 2010  jaye.com

sometimes you have to wonder, “Am I missing anything?”   Team JAYE thinks you are missing something: the tweets with substance. There are tons of users who retweet pertinent news stories, recommend tweeters actually worth following and provide off-the-wall comic relief, but those are overshadowed by the “3drunkwords: Thanks for Nothing!” missives that make you wish Twitter had entrance exams like college to somehow weed out the weak.   But there’s hope, and it starts with you. Here’s are three-step blueprint to thwarting the vapid TT in its tracks:   Don’t succumb to the pressure. We know it’s tough—“everyone’s doing it!” you think. But as mom said, “Just because your friend jumped off a bridge, doesn’t mean you have to.” And in this case, the blind following the blind is a bridge to nowhere—

you’d be better off studying for biochem.   Retweet with caution. As JAYE Editor-in-Chief Michael Jones says, “You are what you retweet,” and sometimes the BS you endorse makes you just as culpable as the person who tweeted it. Don’t tarnish your Twitter rep by reinforcing nonsense.   Follow the 2:1 ratio. OK, we know some of you are probably sneering your nose up at us as you read this saying, “It’s just Twitter—don’t be so uptight!” So for those who can’t resist the pull of pointless trending topics, subscribe to tweeting two tweets of substance for every trivial one. Because there has to be more to life than #FollowFriday Me! Because I’m cool!”   See, there is hope after all. Now pardon us, #wevegotadeadlinetomake. ■
