Memo from mike June 2009

dreams do come true Last year when I told my dad I was launching an online magazine, he simply said, “Oh okay, son,” and continued reading his Sunday newspaper. I sulked down the stairs wondering why his response was so blasé, and went back to reviewing mock-ups of our launch issue, which debuted last June. When my dad and I talked again, I asked him if he thought I’d be successful editing this magazine, and his reply changed my life forever: he looked me straight in my eyes, and said, “There’s nothing I don’t think you can do. So, when you tell me things like you’re starting a magazine, it’s no surprise, because I know that you’re destined for greatness.”   From that moment forward, there’s not too much I don’t think I can conquer academically, professionally, or with this magazine, and this, our one-year anniversary issue, represents that. Don’t get me wrong: we’re all about bringing you the best fashion, beauty and entertainment news you need to stay in style and on trend, but we also understand that college is more than the classroom, and frankly, not all dreams are reduced to academia.  So as we enter the dog days of summer, think of the dreams you have and how you’re going to reach them. And if you get discouraged, remember one thing: you’re destined for greatness. Thanks for coming along for the ride this past year, and buckle up for year two. In the meantime, have a ball reading the issue.

Clockwise from top: Onikeh Brown, JAYE associate editor, shares her story about finding a passion for photography after persuing a career in print modeling. Read all about it on p. 66; cover girl Star Ford shows off her long, lean shape in this season’s metallic trend and must-have skinny jeans (read Ford’s style commandments on p. 50!); Ford with her best girlfriends Tasia, Kari and Allison; Ford’s all smiles as looks back on how far’s she’s come!

editors’ obsession why we love it: ■ We fell in love with this bag when we saw it on the runway — after all, it’s bright enough to wear this summer, but the mustard yellow color transitions into fall and works well with the earth tones that are mainstays when the temperature drops. Speaking of dropping, that’s what our jaws did when we saw the price tag on this stunning carryall. Luckily, we can admire from afar and continue to invest the four-plus thousands into our education. Hey, you can’t blame us for dreaming! $4200, Marc Jacobs Collection; eluxury.com.

wedded bliss

While prepping for three weddings this summer, Fashion News Director Christina Payne rounds up her top tips for stepping on the scene in style. Here, she shows you don’t have to be the bride to still be a bombshell

A

aren’t actually in the wedding, we stylish gals still want to be our own little belle of the ball.   The runways are the most effective inspiration for any occasion. I can find any look I want to achieve, just by saving my favorite collections to my desktop to use for future reference.     Knee-bearing dresses were all over the spring runways, in light fabrics and flowy silhouettes. For a more

sophisticated look, labels like Tracy Reese, Chloe, BCBG, Derek Lam and Diane von Furstenberg quench my thirst for feminine elegance, with girlish flair. For a hint of edge and a lot of courage, labels like Thakoon, Jill Stuart, Betsey Johnson and Jason Wu give me just what I need.   Try these looks for any wedding setting, from day to night, outdoorsy to churchy, sophisticated to a little edge.

Yigal Azrouel Best known as a self-taught expert draper, Yigal Azrouel’s designs are the epitome of modernity and novelty, with attention to detail and an element of surprise. Since he launched his label in 1998, the Israel native is a CFDA member, with reshaping body image through cultural diversity, now more than ever: more women of color on the runways of fashion shows, and landing the covers of premier fashion publications. Beyonce Knowles and First Lady Michelle Obama most recently graced the cover of American Vogue, as well as last summer's famous allblack issue of Italian Vogue featuring Chanel Iman, Liya Kebede, Jourdan Dunn, and veterans like Tyra Banks, Grace Jones and Naomi Campbell.   There are more people of color on commercials, in advertisements, shedding a positive light on cultural diversity, and further proving that history does not have to repeat itself.

Yigal draws inspiration for his collections through his voyages to metro and remote locations through art, culture, architecture, nature and New York City, where he lives. Chloe Founded in 1952, the name Chloe was chosen for the label’s warm, feminine appeal, and its illustrious pretense: “youthful, yet modern in design, slightly audacious in spirit.” The Chloe brand is most widely known for being cutting edge and simultaneously ageless, with a soft, feminine appeal. With several creative directors, like Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, and most recently, Hannah MacGibbon, the label reigns true to its chic aesthetic. Topshop

Here, her 10 commandments — plus, 15 chic musthaves stamped with her approval — that will instantly update your wardrobe and help craft your personal style for now and years to come

’m a girl and I have insecurities too,” Star Ford, 25, candidly admits. “But I think if you’re going to wear clothes, you might as well rock ‘em.”   Her frankness permeates through her academic endeavors as well: “I love fashion so why not have a career that allows me to do both,” Ford, who attends the University of North Texas in Denton and studies broadcast journalism, says with a gentle and relaxed tone that matches her mood during our Friday-night chat. “I’d love to

This past semester, I anchored the Thursday news at UNT and ‘What’s Hot,’ a segment featured the latest news in

It’s Only a Thread Away

Commonly used in India, China and other Eastern Countries, eyebrow threading is a practice of shaping the eyebrows using a cotton thread. The twisting action of the thread traps the hair and lifts it out of the follicle. It’s a very gentle, sanitary, and painless way of removing unwanted facial Hair.In distinction to waxing, the top layers of skin are not peeled or traumatized in the process. The result? A safe, simple, rapid, and highly effective method of hair removal. Because there is minimal chance of irritation, it is very well suited for the sensitive skin.

Skin Care

Summer means fun in the sun, but it’s also time to brush up on your skin care knowhow. Here the essential info you need

By TaNesha Spratling

>> Causes of skin cancer

S things to remember when buying sunscreen courtesy of fitsugar.com ■ Select a sunscreen that says broad spectrum on the bottle. These provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays. ■ It should have an SPF of 15 or higher. Remember that sunscreens with an SPF of 45 or higher don’t allow you to stay out longer. ■ Make sure the label says that it contains sunscreen. Some lotions and tanning oils don’t, so they’ll offer no protection from the sun’s harmful rays. ■ On the list of ingredients, it should say one these: oxybenzone, sulisobenzone, avobenzone (Parsol 1789), ecamsule, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.

did you know? >> In the United States, incidence of melanoma of the skin has increased significantly by 2.9 percent per year from 1993 to 2005 among women. >> According to the latest statistics available from the National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Cancer of the skin is the most common of all cancers in the United States. >> More than one million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed in the US each year. >> Melanoma represents only 4 percent of all skin cancers in the US, but accounts for more than 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths. >> Melanoma is more common than any non-skin cancer among women between 25 and 29 years old. Source: University of Maryland Medicine Web site

■ Survive the sun with these helpful guidelines... >> Seek the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Do not burn. Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. Apply one ounce (two tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours. Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. >> Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months. >> Examine your skin head-to-toe every month. >> See your physician every year for a professional skin exam. 58  JAYE | JUNE 2009

Ways to protect skin: ■ If you know you will be acquiring much sunlight, apply sunscreen every two hours or after getting wet. ■ You are usually less attired at the beach and so covering up is recommended even when wearing sunscreen. Sunscreen also wears off with sweat and water.

adly, skin cancer can take 20 or more years to develop. The Skin Cancer Foundation states that most people receive about 80 percent of their lifetime sun exposure before the age of 18.   Just one blistering sunburn in childhood is estimated to double the risk of melanoma later in life. Taking better care now will reduce the risk, but not eliminate the damage already done.  The Skin Cancer Foundation states that “UV-A penetrates more deeply into the skin than UV-B, can cause skin cancer, and may suppress the immune system.”  Repeated tanning injures the skin and increases the risk of skin cancer.  Skin is still affected by UV rays even when the sun is in hiding. You will still need protection from the rays whether sunny or not. Tanned skin is damaging therefore, you are likely to develop cancer of the skin.

But I don’t call it reality TV, I call it situational TV — reality isn’t fun. Ashley: So, reality TV isn’t reality TV? Robyn: There’s no such thing as reality TV. I think that if you followed my around and saw my reality, you’d be bored, but in certain situations, I think it’s entertaining. Ashley: I see what you’re saying. Devin Thomas (Articles Editor): Don’t forget about the amount of editing that goes into these shows. I mean, they take a span of days and whittle it down to 22 minutes to make you believe what they want you to believe. And from a production standpoint, reality TV is great, especially because it’s cheap. Michael Jones (Editor-inChief): That’s a really good point! Jillian Risnes (Features Editor): I’m sure I’m not the only one, but I love shows like Bromance and the Real World/Road Rules challenges, but I don’t admit it. I love to hate those shows [laughs]! Michael: Would you guys ever go on reality TV?

fan favorites Most viewers of reality shows have their personal favorites. Take JAYE Executive Editor Robyn Sapenter, for example: Despite constant criticism from friends, she continued to support Unique, the villified cast member of VH1’s For the Love of Ray J.

Jillian: Nope. Ashley: No, I wouldn’t go on a show. Robyn: Hell yeah I would! I’d go on a reality TV show in a heartbeat! Devin: Trust me, if you want to go on reality TV, there’s a spot. Robyn: Well, where do I go [Laughs]?! Michael: Seriously, though I don’t know if it’d be entertaining to watch me go through the day. Especially when I’m editing! I watch CNN all day, go to school, read and try to carve away time to sleep. What’s fun about that? Jillian: I think the reason reality TV has been so successful is because people are stepping out of the box and that makes people want to watch it. Devin: I don’t even think reality TV lives up to itself. To the majority of the world, especially our generation, reality stars are royalty. Robyn: We feel like we have a stake in the lives of these people. Like on For the Love of Ray J, which recently wrapped up, my favorite character was Unique, and my friends gave me such a hard time... Michael: Unique? Girl, shut up! Robyn: Anyway, I think we feel like we know them so well that we can help them deal with their problems. Michael: When we should probably be dealing with our own!  ■

“In some ways not being a photography major has made the journey that more meaningful. I am learning the rules as I go, breaking some, and making my own.”

■ My dream was always to be in front of the camera on a runway or in a courtroom; however, at a mere 5-foot6-inches, modeling, one of my dreams, have been deferred. Recently, searching for the career path I want to travel has been a great struggle for me. As I come to the end of my senior year at Texas A&M University-Commerce and I prepare to earn bachelor’s degrees in psychology and business, I often jokingly think “what a waste of four and a half years.”  You see, I have no desire to get my master’s in psychology. And though I still want to go to law school, I think my current path is to get my MBA and continue the growth of my photography business. Being a single mother of a beautiful 16-month old boy, Aydin Christopher, has giving me the assurance that there is no mountain immovable for me, so I plan to knock down all of the obstacles that stand in the way of my dreams one step at a time.   It was sometime in 2008 as I browsed through several photographers portfolios on modelmayhem.com, which is the Facebook and MySpace of the fashion and modeling industry, that a light bulb went off in my head: the true, essential art can be found in photography. Almost instantaneously my passion evolved from canvas to artist and I’ve been molding my path ever since.   I knew the ins and outs of the industry from the model’s perspective. With my business savvy and my ability to be able to relate to my clientele, I am able to bring a sense of sincerity and eye for creativity that some may photographers may lack.  At the time my light bulb went off however, I was missing one thing, a digital photography camera and several hundred dollars to invest in one. I saved up and managed my money wisely and within two months I was able to buy my first camera. Since then, I think I have

taken over 10,000 photographs.   I also lacked the basic training many photographers had in the industry, so I made it my duty to teach myself. If there is a photography Web site, I’ve viewed it; if I knew someone who took good pictures, they became my inspiration, and every photographer I had had the opportunity to shoot with became my mentor. I’ve cleared Barnes and Noble of every photography magazine, manual, and book—I think I even got Photography for Dummies.   I’ve immersed myself into the art, and in turn, it has been a humbling experience to be able to network and learn from many exceptional and established photographers already making waves in the industry.  Several years ago I never thought I would have found a place behind the camera. I didn’t start off a photography major, and in some ways not being a photography major has made the journey that more meaningful. I am learning the rules as I go, breaking some, and making my own.   I have fallen in love with colors and angles and try and incorporate that into every picture I take. I consider myself a natural light photographer, so when the sun is high in the sky, you can find me manipulating the sunrays through my lens in different areas in Commerce.   I came into A&M-Commerce with one goal in mind: to get to law school, and though that is still my top priority, I have had the opportunity to journey down so many other paths along the way that were not originally sketched into my blueprint.  When I get a compliment, open a message, e-mail, or read a comment favorably crediting my work — writing or photography — it makes me even more driven to become better with my craft; it makes my hard work that much more meaningful, and all my dreams more attainable. ■ JAYE | JUNE 2009   67

college students & financial aid

“The idea here is simple. Most Americans spend far too much money on impulsive purchases that really don’t need to make. Set a ceiling. I suggest $100, but it can be whatever amount that makes sense to you. Then give yourself 48 hours to think about it.”  The same ideology is expressed in the book, Young, Fabulous, and Broke by financial Wizard Suze Orman. Dubbing the 20-something

generation, Generation Broke, Orman describes the financial burdens for young spenders.   “Between skyrocketing housing prices, outrageous tuition bills, and less than great job market, Generation Broke will still charge up five pairs of designer jeans that they cannot even afford.”  The solution? Spend smartly! Identify classic pieces for your closet, and invest properly. >>

In a report by Kent Klein, posted on Voices of America, President Barack Obama is repeating his call to change the way the government helps students pay for college. He said the student loan system needs to be fixed, to help more low- and middle-income students afford college. “In a paradox of American life, at the very moment it has never been more important to have a quality higher education, the cost of that kind of education has never been higher,” he said. Mr. Obama wants the government to stop paying private lenders to make student loans, and stop guaranteeing those loans with taxpayers’ money. “Yet, we have a student loan system where we are giving lenders billions of dollars in wasteful subsidies that could be used to make college more affordable for all Americans.”

Every woman’s closet should contain a white shirt, the perfect jeans, black slacks, the classic coat, and a little black dress. These essentials should be designer, true investment pieces, because they are timeless. These items will not last a lifetime, but they will last and should be treated with care.  These basics will carry you from trend to trend, by providing a starting point for your closet. They should fit nicely, and should be replaced or duplicated yearly. By the time you are 30, you should have four to five variations of the “basics” in your closet. Brands to know for basics: Calvin Klein, Bananna Republic, Christian Dior, Michael Kors  Trendy items are the exact opposite. Trendy items will change with the seasons, and should not be more than $50.

These hip pieces should be pared also the more up-to-the-minute complimentary accessories. From jewelry to shoes, chic items can not be half-way pulled together. The look must be complete! Brands to know for trendy Items: Betsy Johnston, Arden B, BeBe, Guess  As a shoeinsta, I cannot think of a better fashion investment than shoes! Shoes should be timely and timeless. Black pumps are a must. Since shoes endure a natural wear-and-tear, they should be a moderate expense with a price tag of $50 to $100. There are, however, times where shoes should be the accessory piece. In these instances, which should be within reason, make the investment in good high quality shoes. Your brain is the B you want to show off. ■ An overlayer top really adds presence, authority, and modesty to a business look. A cotton-blend twinset or unstructured shirt jacket are cooler alternatives to a suit jacket in semi-casual situations. ■ Under a suit jacket, consider wearing a dressy t-shirt instead of the traditional silk blouse. The cotton knit fabric absorbs body moisture and helps you stay surprisingly cool. ■ For a tee to qualify as dressy,

it should be made of fine quality fabric; the neckline should be finished with binding, instead of more casual ribbed trim. It should also have a shaped armhole, and no logos. ■ Consider a business dress like a sheath dress or tailored dress as an alternative to a suit. Look for a solid color and reasonably firm fabric, like a wrinkle-resistant linen. Sleeveless dresses would require a jacket or sweater, but a short-sleeved one should be fine alone. Wrap dresses can work, too, provided they aren’t too low-cut or tight. ■ Most professional offices still expect nylons with a dress or

Resist the temptation to ditch the hose, even if your company’s dress policy does not explicitly require them. ■ Companies are becoming more accepting of backless or open-toe footware, but flip-flops, Birkenstocks, and Crocs don’t make the cut. Toe-post sandals (what used to be called “thong” sandals) are usually too skimpy to be office appropriate, but a conservative peep-toe is fine. ■ Do remember to care for your feet before you bare them. Your nails should be painted a subtle, natural color (think reds and corals, not hot

pink or lime green), and your heels shouldn’t be cracked or flaky. ■ The fashion world has attributed magical properties the color black. It magically absorbs the sun’s rays, and can cook you alive during the summer. Consider a mid-gray or khaki suit instead, or even ivory. You can also punch up your summer outfits with vivid but professional tops. Salmon, turquoise, and purple can be great summery touches. ■ Women’s jewelry is a great way to “summerize” a look. Dating Deal breakers

To get the most out of your relationship, Jaqueline Smith suggests having non-negotiables to live and date by veryone has their pet peeves, something that they just can’t put up while in a relationship. Dating deal breakers vary from person to person, and vary within each relationship. While one small deal breaker may not force you to block your new beau’s number, a combination of some of these deal breakers may just push you over the edge.

■ Smoking…when you’re not a smoker. Kissing a smoker, when you hate the taste of cigarettes, can be horrendous if you usually steer clear of smoking. Even if your beau vows to pop a breath mint before leaning in for a kiss, their hair and clothes will still reek of smoke. If it’s early on in the relationship, this may be a potential deal breaker. Remember, quitting smoking is hard, so don’t expect your partner to necessarily jump on the quitting bandwagon. ■ An addiction to gaming. Dating someone who is addicted to nonstop gaming can be very obnoxious. Playing video games for four hours a day may be fun, but it shouldn’t be

an everyday thing…unless you’re 12. We’re in college now, and there definitely is a lot of free time to game. There are much better ways to spend one’s time than playing World of Warcraft for hours on end. Namely, some time for your significant other. ■ Negative attitudes. Constant whining and complaining is a definite turn off. Always having a negative outlook on life will only bring your outlook on life down. It’s better to surround yourself with positive people with upbeat, positive personalities. Sex Ed: Take Your Pick NC measure allows parents to choose curriculum

n April, the North Carolina House narrowly approved a bill that would allow parents to choose their children’s sexeducation curriculum. In a report penned by Benjamin Niolet published by McClatchy-Tribune News Service, the bill requires parents of children in seventh through ninth grades to choose between the current abstinenceonly curriculum and a “comprehensive” course of instruction.   “I believe there is a health crisis in North Carolina concerning our teens with respect to pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection,” said Rep. Bob England, an Ellenboro Democrat, physician and co-sponsor of the bill. “One important way to bring these numbers down is education.”   If a parent or guardian makes no choice on curriculum, children would receive neither course of instruction. School officials would have to make course materials available for review before parents had to choose.   The new curriculum would open the door for children to be taught about masturbation, sexual activity short of intercourse and about families that have two mothers, two fathers or other combinations, said Rep. Paul Stam, an Apex Republican and the House minority leader.   The bill does not establish the actual curriculum, although it does outline principles the state would have to teach.

arguing over everything? If they do that with friends, they’ll definitely do it in a relationship. People who argue just for the sake of arguing like to push people’s buttons. In a relationship, they’ll push as many of your buttons as possible to test how far they can push you. These types of people are just plain aggravating, so don’t even waste your time, or your breath, arguing with them. ■ Someone who takes things way too seriously. Life is supposed to be enjoyed. When you’re with someone who’s constantly sweating the small stuff, you may lose sight

of how much fun life should be. Everyone should be able to laugh at themselves sometimes, and realize that everything isn’t a life or death matter. Spontaneity in a relationship keeps things fresh. So find someone who can life in the moment and isn’t worrying about every little detail.   These are just some of the many dating deal breakers that people should watch out for. However, everyone’s tastes are different and not everyone is looking for the same things in a relationship, so make up a list of your own dating deal breakers to date by. *

■ Fiancé’s Name: Brandon Posma ■ Wedding Date: December 5, 2009 ■ Age: 23 Q: How is wedding planning going? Tell us all about it! A: It’s good. It’s extremely overwhelming. There are so many things I never thought about. I thought I had it all planned out in my head. And, I realized how much I didn’t have done. Like the cake. I never thought about what I would want my wedding cake to be like. As far as 78  JAYE | JUNE 2009

everything else goes, I have a few important pieces picked out. I found my dress, so I am going to get that ordered. I’ve picked out the bridesmaid dresses. I’m meeting with different photographers and looking around for the perfect invitations. There is still so much to do; it’s really astonishing. Q: Do you have advice you have for girls planning their own wedding? A: Take your time if possible. Shop around for everything, even the small stuff. The first photographer I found, I thought I would use without a doubt. Then, I met with her, and I decided we weren’t going to work well together. And, I don’t want to spend my wedding day stressing over my

photographer. Also, I fell in love with these bridesmaid dresses; they were quite pricey though. I went online and found them substantially cheaper. Being an employee of a small family-owned business, I generally like to purchase from the local small businesses. But, when you are saving so much money on the dresses how can you not order them offline? Q: How did you know this was going to be the one? A: I don’t know. I don’t know how to explain it. I just knew. I found myself putting off other people to spend time with him. I couldn’t wait for 5:00 to roll around at work, so I can go see him. I want to do everything with

him. There is really nothing I want to do without him. My girlfriends will call and want to hang out. I just don’t want to leave his side. I think another big factor was that in most relationships that lovey-dovey feeling goes away a little bit. With him, I never got over the butterfly feeling. Q: What do you think marriage will be like? A: I hear it’s going to be a lot of work. I hope not! I really don’t know what it will be like. I know I am really excited to come home every night and have someone to make dinner for. I’ll probably spend Saturdays cleaning and doing laundry; I enjoy doing the things housewives do. Otherwise, I’ll just spend a lot of time with my best friend! Q: Do advice you have for girls trying to find and land the one? A: Always be yourself. Don’t keep any skeletons in your closet, because that usually doesn’t turn out well. Also, sometimes you can’t sugar coat things; it’s important to just put out there what you have to say whether your significant other is going to like it or not. That’s really important when trying to find out if you’re compatible with someone. A relationship can’t be successful when you can’t communicate or when either of you is hiding something from the other. Q: Where is the honeymoon? And, how did you pick the perfect spot? A: We haven’t booked anything yet, but we’re leaning towards Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. We talked about it. We thought about going on a cruise, but that is something we have both already experienced. I went to Punta Cana when I was a junior in high school, and it is really amazing. More importantly, it is one of the only places that has a perfect climate year-round which is important since we’ll be there in December. Many other tropical climates can still be quite chilly that time of the year; we learned this from a friend that spent their whole honeymoon wearing jeans. I want to be able to put on a bathing suit and lay on a warm beach with a drink and my perfect guy. Q: What plans do you have for your marriage in the next five years? A: We will probably stay where we are for now. We both work for family-owned businesses, so we’re really happy where we are now. I think if I change jobs it will be to a stay-at-home mom! We are planning on having our first child within the first two years. I can’t wait to have babies; I so look forward to being a mom! >> JAYE | JUNE 2009   79

A: Surreal! It felt like a dream. It’s hard to believe, at that moment, that everything you’ve shared as a couple was coming down to this. It’s strange to actually live the fairy tale that you dreamt of growing up as a little girl. I should probably mention how terrifying it is to walk down an aisle with everyone staring at you!

80  JAYE | JUNE 2009

Q: How it is being a new wife? A: Being a new wife is fun. It’s a good feeling knowing you’ve found the one person you’re going to be with for the rest of your life. It certainly changes the way you look at life. I think I learn something new everyday about my husband, who I thought I already knew everything about! Q: How is it living with a man, one you can’t kick out when he gets too messy? A: Ha! Well I could definitely wring his mother’s neck for babying him so much all the way to the ripe age of 24, but you just deal with it. In the grand scheme of things, messiness is such a small trade for all of the love you share. I have to admit, I still get on his case quite often, with hopes that someday, before we die, he’ll learn to put his dirty clothes in the dirty clothes hamper...not on the floor where

he took them off. And it feels great to know that at the end of the day, you’re going home to the man you love. Q: With your husband already having a son, how did you prepare yourself knowing when you say “I do,” you would become a mother as well as a wife? A: It’s definitely a huge feeling of responsibility. I mean, I went into this knowing what I was in for. You just have to take it day by day, learn to take people’s advice, communicate extra well, and do your best. I’m lucky to have such a wonderful husband who supports and appreciates everything I do for his son. As for being a wife on top of it, everyday is a learning experience. Nothing in life comes with instruction manuals. You just do what you have to do to get by and take care of the people that you love. Q: How do you make sure >>

send it as soon as possible after the wedding). ■ Do wait for a cue from the wedding or venue coordinator if you are late and the processional or ceremony has already started. ■ Do remember to turn off your cell phone during the ceremony. ■ Don’t take photographs during the service — your flash may interfere with the professional photographer. ■ Do remain respectful even if you do not take part in the religious ceremony. ■ Don’t go crazy at the buffet table if there are a lot of guests who have not eaten yet. ■ Do wait for the bride and groom to dance before you

hit the floor, even if music is beckoning. The couple gets the honor of the first dance. ■ Don’t just talk to your date. Engage the people at your table in polite conversation even if you don’t know them. ■ Do write or call the bride and groom to ensure that your gift arrived safely if you have not received a thankyou within two months. * Editor’s Note: For more tips on what to wear to all of the weddings on you schedule, reference “No Payne, No Gain,” Fashion News Director Christina Payne’s monthly style column on p. 18. to show him as much love as possible? And, how do you position yourself as a stepmother? A: Anybody who is in my position knows that it is one of the hardest roles to play. I try my hardest to be supportive and give him tons of attention and positive reinforcement. I can’t control what kind of home he lives in with his other family, but I can try my best to make our home a loving place and a fun and safe atmosphere for him. On a different note, the inconsistency in lifestyles does make normal milestones much more challenging. For example, potty training, sleeping habits, and so on. All you can do is love them and hope that it pays off in the end. Q: You have a new baby boy. Tell 82  JAYE | JUNE 2009

me how pregnancy is? A: Oh boy. Pregnancy, in my mind, is best described as a really cool disease. Hah. In the beginning, it’s a rush. The only thing you can think of is the baby. As the months go by, your body changes in ways I can hardly describe. Things get bigger, you can’t see your toes, you tend to eat some strange things, and your relationship with your husband becomes much more real and very comical! It’s a really cool feeling to know you’re “growing” a baby. Q: Children, especially a baby can really soak up a lot of time and energy. What do you do to keep “magic” and relationship alive with your husband? A: Haha...oh boy. How do I say this

PG-13? You learn to get really “creative.” You have to cherish every second you have alone. We try our hardest to have one night a week dedicated to just “us.” You have to be sure to continue working on your relationship, otherwise everything will fall apart. We talk on the phone every chance we get, and as long as we both don’t fall asleep as soon as we hit the pillow, we try to catch each other up on everything that happened with each other during the day. You really have to take advantage of naptime! Q: What advice do you have for new or soon to be brides? A: DON’T BE A BRIDZILLA. There is a way to make your day special without turning into a monster! Take all the help you can get, and if possible, share it all you can with the people who are special to you. Take a ton of pictures because when the festivities are all said and done, that’s what you have to remember it by. Q: And advice for new or soon to be wives and moms? A: Wives: hold onto you socks! Your temperament will be tested. Learn to never go to bed angry. Talk it out. Don’t bottle up emotions; it leads to blowouts and resentment. Learn to cook...everybody will appreciate it. Separate your darks and whites, and don’t put your husband’s jeans in the dryer on high heat. Men don’t appreciate form fitting jeans. Remember to keep it fun. Keep flirting. Communication is key. Moms: Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion, but also know your boundaries when it comes to step-parenting. Remember that you are an “extra.” You are there to help out, support, and add whatever you can to make this child’s life better. Your husband MUST back you up, and you must come to an agreement on how this child will be raised.

jaye an upside to the downturn

college students & the economy:

could the recession be good for us? For months, we’ve had to scale back, survive with less, and endure countless reports on jobs being cut or shipped overseas. But could there be an upside to the economic downturn? When the markets bounce back, could we better off thanks to the lessons we’ve learned over the last year? Devin Thomas searches for and provides the answers ■ Eat your peas, wash behind your ears, look both ways before crossing the street. We’ve heard them all our lives from our parents and teachers, you know, those typical and rational examples of what’s good for us.     Recently, we’ve been fed a new set of life principles: cut back on spending, take any job you can get, and be wary of investments. These too seem like well-intended tidbits from an older generation watching their life savings wash away in the year-long financial flash flood. 84  JAYE | JUNE 2009

Now that’s not to say people haven’t been seriously affected by the recent turn of events. Many people have had salaries cut, millions have been laid off, and, in other cases, families have lost their homes. In the very worst situations, marriages have failed as a result of the additional strain. College graduates and young professionals are finding it harder to land a job due to a boost of out-of-work competitors with much more experience; companies are scared to invest money into a world of uncertainty. The auto indus-

try is on the brink of bankruptcy, and as far as the banks go, well, that’s just another headache in itself.   So, it’s doom and gloom, right? The end of the world as we know it. Well, it may be the end of the world as we currently know it, but it’s certainly not the end of the world altogether. Life will go on after this, and take it easy: the United States of America will continue on as a sovereign nation.   Of course, things will need to change. People will need to reconsider their financial lifestyles. But, stop >>

8 major benefits from the recession ■ The rebate check. By now, most Americans have received a check from the IRS, possibly for $300, maybe $600, or even $1,200 or somewhere in between. ■ Undervalued stocks and bonds. Dips like the one we’re experience are perfect opportunities for long-term investors to pick some good values company by company or buy the overall market through a low-cost index fund. ■ Lower interest rates. Kiplinger says that as the Federal Reserve lowers the federal funds target interest rate, opportunities are available for those with good credit ratings to borrow cash as needed. ■ New tax breaks. This year, you may have owed less to the IRS thanks to a new deduction for private mortgage insurance, an extension of

the sales-tax write-off and a boost in the alternative minimum tax exemption amount. ■ Falling house prices. Even though at the moment, there are more people trying to sell homes then there are buyers, this is still a benefit to young adults looking to settle down and purchase a home. ■ Higher retirement account limits. Kiplinger suggests using the rebate check to turbocharge your retirement savings. This year, you can invest $5,000 (or $6,000 if you’re over 50 years old) in a Roth, Traditional IRA, or a combination of the two. If you have a 401(k) you can contribute up to $15,500 (plus another $5,000 if you’re over 50). These limits will continue to increase, too. ■ Help with college bills. Got student loans? If

you’re a teacher or if you work in public service, you may be able to receive grants. Those with high debt and low income will benefit the most. ■ New rollover option. If your adjusted gross income is $100,000 or less, you can now roll over your 401(k) directly into a Roth IRA without having your funds go through a Rollover Traditional IRA first. Not only that, but if your income is above the $100,000 threshold, just wait until 2010 when the income limit disappears. For any funds in your 401(k) from a pre-tax source, you will owe tax when you roll over into a Roth IRA, providing early tax income to the government, possibly to help pay for expensive programs like Social Security. ■ Source: ConsumerIsCommentary.com.

jaye an upside to the downturn and take a deep breath in, because it’s not the apocalypse.   Now breathe out, stop over-stressing, because worry will does not add time to your life. It may, however, give you premature wrinkles. Whether you have a western-religious background, spend your days meditating with Buddah, or just think The Secret is really interesting, they all share a common denominator: the power of positive thinking.   Thinking positively not only reduces stress, it can also lead to many other positive effects. When you see the silver lining, you project hope. Hope is essential in times like these; in my opinion, people need hope as much as food, water, and shelter. Finding the sunny side of the situation can be tough. So, to get you started, here are a few benefits of a recession: ■ Save the trees: Check out your snail-mailbox, you will find that its contents are a little thinner this year. In the past year, credit-card issuers cut their mailings to current customers by nearly one-third—19 percent since last October says Chicago-based research firm, Mintel Comperemedia. Also, according to the research firm comSocre, traffic to online coupon sites is growing rapidly with page views up 38 percent to 281 million in March compared to the previous year. The cut-back in paper usage is a benefit of the recession because companies nationwide have learned to save a penny here and there, which means fewer trees will be cut down— see even the recession’s gone green! ■ Smaller waistlines: With gas prices rising, falling, and then rising again, hitting the pavement is becoming the savvy way to travel. Whether jogging, riding a bike or just strolling to the nearest bus stop, people are increasing their daily dose of exercise. Europeans have embraced this mode 86  JAYE | JUNE 2009

of transportation for years—take a vacation to France and you’ll be amazed at their average sizes! Along with burning a couple extra calories walking to work, starting a garden will cut down that grocery bill. Regular gardening provides cardio and strength training; it improves flexibility and relieves stress. These health benefits help fight heart attack, type-2 diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and osteoporosis. Who knows, Americans may come out of this fiscal decline looking better than when they went in! ■ When you wish upon a star: Did you know Disney was started during an economic downturn? As were about half of the 30 companies that make up the Dow Jones industrial average, including Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard. And, don’t forget about Burger King, CNN, FedEx, MTV, GE, and the Wikipedia Foundation—they were all started during a recession. This can be a

great time to start a new business; rent is down, wages are cheap and the cost of goods and services can be found at a discount. If you have an idea or a dream, this just might be the time to take a leap of faith and make it happen.   This can be a very scary time and no one is ignoring the very real ramifications of the situation. But instead of joining in on the constant worry, be the change people need to see. Spread hope to your friends. Provide support and love for your families. Encourage people to keep their heads up and minds open to the different opportunities life can bring. You may not be able to get someone their job back or put money in their pockets, but you could put a smile on their face. And a smile could brighten a day. That day could change a week. That week could alter their perspective on that month. Together, we could make this one of the best years in American history. ■

jaye health Why victims go back to their abusers In the wake of the coverage gained by the Chris Brown and Rihanna alleged battery story, many women wondered why victims return to their abusers. Steven Stosny, counselor and founder of the anger and violence management program CompassionPower, which treats people convicted of abuse in the home, tells CNN abuse victims will “leave out of either fear, anger or resentment,” he said. “But then, after the fear, anger or resentment begins to subside, they feel guilt, shame, anxiety, and that takes them back.” After a violent incident, there is often a “honeymoon period” during which the abuser may apologize profusely, give the victim gifts and persuade the victim to stay, experts say. But when that period is over, the abuser may once again become violent. The powerful psychological mechanisms that lead people to stay in abusive relationships may have developed for survival reasons, Stosny said.

>> As college students typically we’re busy: We are on the run looking for internships, job opportunities, and maintaining an aboveaverage GPA. We don’t have time to actually cook a healthy or decent home cooked meal. We like what is quick, cheap and easy to attain. Moms at risk for Internet addiction According to a report on CNN.com by Rachel Mosteller, there’s a movement among psychiatrists to recognize Internet addiction as an official mental disorder (just like alcohol dependency). And a recent Stanford University national survey found that 14 percent of Internet users find it hard to stay away from it for several days at a time; 9 percent try to hide their “nonessential Internet use” from their loved ones; 8 percent admit they use the Web as a way to escape problems.

Health News: The 411 on HPV

■ According to Centers for Disease Control, genital human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). The virus infects the skin and mucous membranes. There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of men and women, including the skin of the penis, vulva (area outside the vagina), anus, and the linings of the vagina, cervix, and rectum. Most people who become infected with HPV do not even know they have it.   The Gardasil vaccine has been introduced, which can now protect females from the four types of HPV that cause most cervical cancers and genital warts.   For those who choose to be sexually active, condoms may lower the risk of HPV, if used all the time and the right way. Condoms may also lower the risk of developing HPV-related diseases, such as genital warts and cervical cancer.     But HPV can infect areas that are not covered by a condom—so condoms may not fully protect against HPV. So the only sure way to prevent HPV is to avoid all sexual activity.   Individuals can also lower their chances of getting HPV by being in a mutually-faithful relationship.
