WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Jam i e van SPOTLIGHTS

In 2004, Jamie Van Horne capped off one of the most celebrated high school basketball careers in Sonoma County history—for women or men. She spent the next four years playing basketball for Yale University, Division I school in the historic Ivy League. Currently, Jamie is living in Madrid, Spain, where she works as a kindergarten teacher and high school boys varsity basketball coach at the American School of Madrid. She also tutors and works in the development office. In her free time, she travels as much as possible. Somewhere in between teaching and traveling, Jamie was kind enough to give us some insight on her high school and college basketball careers. Out of all the colleges, why Yale? I chose Yale after taking a recruiting trip there in October of my senior year. Although I was a bit intimidated by how far and different it was from Healdsburg, I was completely enchanted by the campus. I had never seen anything like it. I was excited to take on a new adventure and thrilled at the chance to play Division I basketball at such a well-respected academic institution. In retrospect, I realize how fortunate I was to have such an opportunity.

Most California athletes stay in California, was it a hard transition to live and play on the East Coast? I did not find the transition to the East Coast very difficult at all. I certainly went through typical ups and downs as any new college athlete does, but overall I loved every bit of the experience. I attribute the easy transition to having parents who encouraged me to go and had confidence in my ability, to the support and resources at Yale University, and to the wonderful teammates that were instantly my new family and biggest fans on and off the court.

What were your most memorable moments in your basketball career? There are two moments that instantly come to mind.

Photo: yale university

First, my junior year of high school, we played against St. Mary’s of Berkeley in the semi-finals of the NCS playoffs. We played in Healdsburg, and we were 29-0 coming into the game. The gym was completely packed to capacity, and it was so loud my teammates and I could not hear each other at all. Although we were a smaller and less athletic public school, we somehow were able to stay in the game against a bigger and better St. Mary’s team. We played with so much pride, and had so much support, it was just an incredible experience. Although we ended up losing by 3 points, the emotion and excitement in that game made it one that I will never forget. I have since played against many of the St. Mary’s players at the college level, and we always have a good time remembering what a special game that was. Second was my senior year at the University of Minnesota. We were playing in a tournament, and we played North Carolina State in our first game. The arena was one of the biggest I had ever played in, and just being on the court made it a special game. We ended up beating North Carolina State by a few points, the first time that Yale had ever defeated an Atlantic Coast Conference team. It was especially memorable

Family Life:

for me because it was my birthday, I played well, and my parents, aunt, uncle, and grandma were able to be there to watch me play.

What is the best basketball advice you have been given? I always counted on my dad’s words of wisdom to get me through the tough times. He was never an overpowering force, but a consistent supporter when I needed help keeping perspective. He always reiterated consistency, hard work, and doing my best with what I could control. He also taught me the importance of being positive, enjoying the game, and leading by example. “FOCUS, CALMNESS, and TOUGHNESS” were often his words of advice for me on a game day.

Can you give us one thing fans may not know about playing basketball at the college level? In high school, I always glorified the big time college players and dreamed of being them. In reality, I found that the glory of playing basketball at the college level comes from developing mental and physical toughness, leadership, and friendship that cannot be understood by anyone that is not in the locker room and at every practice or conditioning session. The rewards are intrinsic and only truly reaped by someone who is completely dedicated to their team and their school.

Has playing basketball in high school and college, helped you off the court, and if so, how? Playing basketball, and all that is involved in high school and college, has completely molded me into the person I am today. I learned so much, especially in college, about people and about myself. Basketball taught me how to rely on others, as well as how to be relied on. It helped me to understand the importance of actions over words, and it taught me how to act under pressure. It has also helped me to learn how to put others ahead of myself, and to keep things in perspective.

Jamie’s mother, Charlotte, and father, Peter, were both athletes at the University of Arizona. Her mom played tennis, while her dad played baseball, and was on a national championship team there. He held the record for most hits in the College World Series until just recently. Her Uncle Keith played football for USC and then started for the Chicago Bears for 13 seasons, where he won the Super Bowl in 1985. Her sister, Katie was also a huge inspiration to her, both athletically and academically. She was two years ahead of Jamie in school. Katie still holds many Sonoma County swimming records, and went on to attend Washington State University on a full-scholarship where she swam in the Pac 10 for 4 years.

Coach Pat Kennedy SPOTLIGHTS

Pat Kennedy played for Mike Gaddie at Piner High School and graduated in 1984. His senior year was the first year that Coach Gaddie won the SCL title. In the early 1990s, shortly after graduating college, Pat Kennedy started coaching basketball in Sonoma County. He began his career helping Russ Peterich with JV Basketball at Montgomery and soon after began assisting Tom Fitchie with the varsity team as well as continuing to coach JV. In 1997, he was named the head coach of Santa Rosa High School where he had a very successful seven-year run. In 2004, he moved to North Carolina with his family. For the past several years, he has been assisting at Wakefield High School in Raleigh. In 2010, Pat was asked to coach the varsity men’s team, one of North Carolina’s largest and most prestigious basketball programs. Currently, Wakefield is 12-4 and 4-2 in league. Wakefield is in the CAP 7, a league that produced 7 ACC players in one year, and currently, John Wall, a freshman at Kentucky, who is regarded as one of the best college players in the nation. On January 11th, 2010, Pat accepted the job as Athletic Director of Heritage High School in North Carolina. He will finish this season as the Varsity Head coach before beginning his new assignment.

How did you get your current coaching position? The athletic director here knew that I had coaching experience, so they asked me if I was interested in coaching varsity basketball. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity.

Is coaching a team in Sonoma County the same as coaching a team in North Carolina? Absolutely! There are a few different rules here that impact the game. For example, we don’t have a shot clock in NC. Also, the talent tends to be a bit deeper here. The year that I arrived, our conference had 7 players that went to ACC schools. Two of them went on to play in the NBA and some of the others are making good money playing overseas.

Who have been some of the more influential coaches in your career? Coach Gaddie, Coach Peterich and Coach Fitchie all had a great impact on my coaching career. As a young coach, they gave me the opportunity to develop. I learned a great deal from all of them.

AAU is extremely popular in North Carolina, what kind of challenges does that present as a High School coach? AAU is huge on the east coast. Almost every player on our roster played AAU this summer. I even coached a boys 13-and-under team last year. Before I left California, I coached a girls AAU team for two years that I really enjoyed. AAU is great competition, but it can also be a challenge for a high school coach to pull

What was the hardest thing about leaving Sonoma County? Leaving friends and players, but my wife and I felt that it was best for our family. The change has worked out nicely for us.

What has been the highlight of your career in North Carolina this far? Just being able to coach and develop new relationships with coaches and players has made the transition easier for me and my family.

together a team where 10 players may have played for six different coaches, with six different philosophies.

All together we had 88 players try out. We kept 27 players in the program, so it makes cuts very hard.

Who are some of the better players you have had to coach against in your league, and where did they end up going to school? Of course, most people now know about John Wall who is at Kentucky. It was fun watching him play for the past few years. One of our guards is now playing at Marquette and we have another at Queens University.

Best piece of advice a coach has ever given you? It’s not about the Xs and Os; it’s about the Jims and Joes. Good players can make a coach look good!

Coaches love quotes. Do you have a favorite? I do: “The thing I loved the most—and still love the most about teaching—is that you can connect with an individual or a group, and see that individual or group exceed their limits.” —Coach K

Are there many multiple sport athletes in your program? Yes, but it seems that the trend is to specialize these days. One of our basketball players has committed to LSU to play football, so we are not sure if he will play next year.

Is there more pressure coaching in North Carolina where basketball is so popular? Being in the triangle of NC State, UNC and Duke, some people have unrealistic expectations of what their teams can do. They expect championships, but pressure is what you put on yourself. Nobody can place more pressure on me than I do myself.

Best piece of advice you can give someone interested in becoming a coach? Find good coaches and study them. Creatively copy everything that you can and make it your own. Above all else, teach from the heart and remember that it is about the development of young men and women. Pat and his wife Cyndi have been married for 15 years and have two children Holly, 12 and Caden, 9 and a cat named Abby.

2009 NBL Tournament Champion: Piner (Piner 55, Cardinal Newman 46)

Boys Outlook 2010 The last two seasons, the NBL title holder has not won the NBL Tournament. This is a testament to the parity among the schools in this tough division. At first glance you would have to give the edge to the experienced Ukiah team, but don’t count out Cardinal Newman or Montgomery. The fourth spot in the NBL tourney is anybody’s guess.

2009 SCL Boys

With an experienced and battle tested team, Analy is the clear-cut favorite to repeat as SCL champion. With that said, the three remaining spots for the SCL tournament are wide-open—and we mean wideopen. With teams missing football players for much of the preseason, and others trying to blend young players with veteran players, most of the coaches are still trying to get to know their teams. What we do know is the SCL season is going to one heck of a battle. Who will win the SCL tournament? The odds would favor Analy, but in post season tournaments anything can happen.

SCL Tournament Champion: Petaluma (Petaluma 43, Sonoma 32)

Girls Outlook 2010 SONOMA COUNTY LEAGUE

The top spot appears to be shaping up as a three-team battle between Casa Grande, Petaluma and Windsor. With the variety of the preseason schedules between the three, it will be hard to choose a clear cut favorite. While those three compete for the SCL crown, the rest of the pack will be trying to earn a berth in the SCL tournament. The chase for the fourth spot will be equally as challenging, where the fans will benefit from close and exciting games.

There does not seem to be a runaway favorite in the SCL. This bodes well for Lady Dragons who played a tough preseason schedule against some of the Bay Area’s better teams and had to overcome illness and injuries. returning all-SCL players

Much improved from 2009, Windsor has a good mix of veterans and young players. While not the favorite to win the SCL, the Jaguars should be playing meaningful games in February. RETURNing all-SCl players

Beyond The Arc Winning the Recruiting Game: What NOT To Do By Penny Hastings

When trying to attract the attention of college coaches, knowing what not to do can make the difference between success and failure. You might think you’re doing everything right, but if you can’t get coaches to notice you, or turn them off when they do, you will forfeit any chance to play your sport at the college level and be awarded a sports scholarship. The following list of what not to do will help you make the team.

1. Don’t sit back and wait for a college coach to contact you.

Some kids, their parents and even a few high school coaches believe that if student-athletes are good enough, coaches will know about them. Nonsense. Unless you’re among the 1% of state or nationally ranked blue chip athletes, few coaches outside your area will ever hear of you.

2. Don’t concentrate on your grades—your sport is more important.

No way! College coaches want to know that you have what it takes in the classroom as well as in the gym. The NCAA (National College Athletic Association) mandates minimum GPAs and test scores to play college sports and often, schools have higher admissions’ standards.

3. Don’t contact college coaches yourself—let your parents do it.

No. No. No. If parents call to make a pitch for their student-athlete, college coaches think that either the kid is lazy or not assertive enough to make the contact, or that the parents want their son or daughter to play college sports more than the student-athlete does.

4. Don’t be realistic about your abilities.

Many student-athletes are either afraid they aren’t good enough to play at the college level or believe they should be playing only at a Division I school. Most of them are probably wrong either way. You don’t have to be a superstar to play college sports or get a sports scholarship. You also don’t need to play at Div. I to have a great athletic and academic experience.

5. Don’t take time and effort to make a good first impression.

How many times do you get to make a first impression? When you correspond with a coach, make your letter, e-mail or phone call stand out positively. One coach I know says he’s surprised that so much written correspondence contains errors, spelling and grammatical errors. He discards all that he calls “dumb jock” correspondence. “I want athletes who are college material,” he says. Another coach warns not to address correspondence to “Dear Coach.” Each college coach’s name is on that institution’s website, along with the correct spelling. E-mails are accepted by most coaches, but use the same professional style as you would use in a postal letter. No “Hey dude,” or shorthand, such as “UR the coach I wnt to play 4.”

6. Don’t feel you have to be straight up with a coach.

Big mistake. While you might be inclined to exaggerate your academic or athletic skills, DON’T DO IT! College coaches will not waste time on a

COU NTY

boasting, bragging or downright lying student-athlete. List your credentials truthfully. There are just too many ways for the coach to find out about your sports and scholastic performances, and if coaches can’t count on your honesty up front, they are not going to want you in their program.

7. Don’t follow up!

Just sit back and relax? No. When you’ve made your list of possible colleges and contacted the coach of your sport at each one, don’t drop the ball. Always follow up a written correspondence or telephone call with another contact. Ask if these coaches received your message. Try to engage them in conversation. Find out what kind of player they’re looking for and ask if they think, based on the information you’ve given them, that you’d be a good fit for their program. If they sound interested at this early stage, continue to follow up with new information, a current event schedule, an award you’ve recently won, or just to ask questions. Persistence pays off because it shows you are truly interested. By Penny Hastings, co-author of How To Win A Sports Scholarship. www.winasportsscholarship.com
